My funny Valentine... Is love is in the air this month for you? Or do you think it’s another commercial stunt to spend more money? Personally I love it, when I see couples of ‘wiser years’ who still walk along hand in hand at the seafront, still nattering away and enjoying each other’s company. I think it keeps hope in all of us. I don’t think it matters if your love and care is for your hubby, wife, boyfriend, dog, cat, parrot, etc. If you have love to share then what’s stopping you! Soppy... Yep! and I always will be! In this issue, hopefully we can inspire you with ideas and stories from our authors. If you have someone you’d like to feel special, why not take a look at the Beach Hut Cooks’ delicious recipe to tempt your true love. Or visit the De La Warr Pavilion to watch their screening of the classic, wartime romance, “From Here To Eternity” (see centre pages). We aim to help businesses promote themselves, raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back, and on our website or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you.

BEXHILL – an artists’ view February is notoriously a cold month. Whether it is a continuum of the blustery gales Bexhill has seen recently or the serene calmness of a fresh crisp morning after a sprinkling of overnight snow. As the month progresses the mist and frost adds a different aspect. It’s as if Mother Nature has a paint brush of her own and she coats everywhere with a delicate dusting of frost. Edgerton Park in Bexhill is a popular place for many and in February nature delivers a muted palette of colours with the evergreens
really coming into their own here, at this time of year. From the dark green spiky foliage of the fir trees to the variegated evergreens. The holly with its bright cadmium red berries and strong distinctive dark green leaves is a popular winter theme. If you are lucky you may be able to find the delicate and sometimes elusive flowers that are snowdrops. They appear in clusters around the bottom of large trees. They bring with them their gentle leaves and Chinese white petals which is truly a joy to paint and capture on paper.

Sitting with my dog on the bench by the end of the duck pond there is a lovely view of the pond, with the bridge in the background. Ducks and moorhens cast slight ripples in the water. Depending on the weather depends if the pond is calm and clear and then reflections can be wonderful. The reflection of the overhanging trees towards the small bridge gives a charming picture even at this time of year. The trees whose extended branches seem to move over the glistening pond give a good composition to paint or draw. With few leaves on them now, their branches appear almost grey. If the temperature drops enough parts of the pond may even freeze, which then adds another dimension to this frosty display. If it is a rainy, cold and blustery day then the ducks will no doubt be sheltering in their island. The little brickwork castle in the middle of the pond is a perfect subject to sketch. The higgledy grey and brown stones that make the column will make good use of the tubes of paynes grey, burnt umber and raw sienna paint. The beautiful bold almost iridescent emerald green of the mallards head can be seen swimming around, fighting for a place with the all too familiar noisy seagulls of Bexhill.

BEXHILL to bexhill... next stop Melaka, Malaysia Dear Annie
20th December 2013
Since my last letter I have travelled through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, arriving in Malaysia last week. I spent a couple of days in Penang, in Georgetown, and was greeted by a town very different to the beautiful green place you visited. The hill, however, is still there, with fabulous views from the top, and a fully modernised funicular railway from the base to its summit. Much of the town you left remains. It was recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so many of the buildings and old town are still intact. City Hall and Fort Cornwallis are I expect largely unchanged from the outside. Arriving in Melaka yesterday, also now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I am enjoying my stay very much. The climate is getting hotter still and just a few days before Christmas it makes being away from home at this time of year all the more strange. There are several reminders though of home, English is commonly spoken and the electric plug sockets are the same. One of the local guides also told me he had worked for the British Royal Navy, serving in the Falklands Conflict. Now retired he works as a guide, giving trishaw tours. The trishaw is a kind of rickshaw cross cyclo apparatus, with elaborately decorated seats attached to the side of a bicycle. Appearing to be trying to outdo each other, there are many ever more elaborately decorated trishaws, many with music and lights. There is also a very pretty river that runs through Melaka, and, lit up last night, it all looked utterly charming. I visited the Maritime Museum this morning, beautifully presented in a replica Portuguese ship. It outlines the history of the town and influences on it as a trading port and melting pot for so many cultures. I think you would have liked it here had you the chance to stay longer. I am heading for Singapore next, but think I will return here during my stop over from Borneo to Australia. It seems to be a lovely place to pass time in. With kind regards, Louise
Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum through February serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated
terminal is planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

Coping with... anxiety Anxiety is a negative reaction to a stimulus. We can be responding to something that has happened, like the loss of a loved one. We can also be responding to something perceived or imagined, such as what may happen at a job interview or an imagined future change in circumstance. No matter what the origin of anxiety, it is our ‘grasping’ of the mental picture which is the problem. According to Chinese medicine, it is quite right to be angry when there has been an abuse – someone pushing in when there’s a queue or treating you unfairly. It is not right when you are re-living the scenario two months later, feeling the anger and agitation of that moment; the anger should naturally rise and fade. This is the same for the emotions of fear and grief. When we hold onto events and their associated emotions we manifest it in our bodies, which further solidifies the negative emotional patterns causing anxiety. In Chinese medicine, negative emotions affect different organs: • Grief – Lungs • Excessive Joy – Heart • Fear – Kidneys • Worry – Stomach/Spleen • Anger – Liver Ideally we should have an open, clear mind with a relaxed body. You can’t be angry and relaxed at the same time. You can’t be holding onto a loss and have an open, clear mind. By cultivating a clear, open mind, with a relaxed body, we have a physical and mental state where negative emotions cannot take hold. The main methods of achieving this relaxed state are: Acupuncture, Tai Chi, QiGong and Medi-tation/Philosophy. Acupuncture has the benefit of using a practitioner’s skill and experience to select the correct treatment

methods for releasing the negative emotions. Tai Chi, QiGong and Meditation may take longer for a positive effect, but the skills learnt are carried with you and so can be applied at any time needed.
TAI CHI
A meditation practice often used is to focus on the breath. This can be done formally sitting down, but can also be done when walking. With just a light focus on the breath, you can ‘listen to’ or ‘be aware of’ the breath. At no point do you consciously change the breath, just simply observe it. By doing so, you will find your own natural way of being and relax the negative mental and physical grasping that led to an anxious state. As long as it is just a slight concentration used, a feeling of calm will quickly come. If you focus too hard then you will be in the same ‘grasping’ state that brought on the anxiety. Always the focus should be light and natural. This can be done for just a few minutes each day. To break through ingrained physical and mental tension and grasping, we use acupuncture. To develop our own abilities to be open and relaxed, we use the methods of Tai Chi, QiGong and Meditation. Mark can be contacted on 01424 217630 at Younique Wellbeing Studios in Bexhill.

So how about starting off the day on the right foot by making a simple breakfast. Cheaper than a meal out and even if you aren’t the best of cooks, your darling with spend all day inwardly smiling feeling like the most special person in the whole world.
Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon and Chives (serves 2) Here’s what you’ll need: •
4 eggs
•
Butter
•
100g smoked salmon (maybe less)
•
2 tablespoons double cream
•
Small handful of fresh chives,
Break eggs into a bowl and whisk together. Melt butter in a frying pan, pour in the eggs, and cook for about a minute, stirring from time to time. Meanwhile, start toasting your bread. Add the smoked salmon and cream and continue to cook for a further minute until just cooked through. Remove from heat and sprinkle over the chives. Butter your toast and then top with the scrambled eggs, giving everything a good grind of black pepper.

courses, talks & workshops at dlwp DLWP continues to work hard on the website to make our adult courses, talks and workshops more visible, so we welcome the opportunity to tell you about them here, in The Bexhillian. Our talks are aimed at people who want to know a bit more about the context in which the works in our galleries are created. Dr Graham Whitham has had a long and prestigious career lecturing in art and on Wednesday mornings from 21 March, he will help us interpret abstract art, some of which will be displayed in the galleries from March through to June. He will also be giving two talks, about war artist Otto Dix and architect Frank Lloyd Wright, both of whom relate to the exhibitions this summer. We will also be running two day long photography workshops over the weekend of 10/11 May. These are aimed at people who love photography and want to realise their camera’s full potential! Lucy Pearce has been running successful contemporary dance sessions on Wednesday mornings for over 55s, for the past year. This is a small group with big ambitions – why not come along and try it? Lorraine Bowen’s West Side Story singing workshop was so much fun that she is returning on March 16
with a new programme of songs from Rogers and Hammerstein musicals.
Enjoy Valentines Day in style at the DLWP with a screening of the classic wartime romance, “From Here to Eternity” February means Valentine’s Day and DLWP does it in style with a screening of the classic wartime romance “From Here To Eternity”. BEXHILL NEWS
news from the mayor of bexhill
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Have you made your New Year Resolution? I am sure you have and you are sticking to them like glue. I do it every year and only as an exercise, a bit of fun and see how long I can keep it up. This year I have decided to buy only genuine diamonds and eat less ginger biscuits. Well I have managed to half my biscuit consumption. I have to ask the question ‘where did all this come from?’ ‘Why do we do it?’ Some insane moment to see how long we can stand torturing ourselves? A test of endurance? Last year it was losing weight. How soon will I be able to touch my toes? I tried but after an hour and a half of really trying I gave up. The cheery news is that my vegetable seed catalogues have come in and I am really looking forward to planning the Veggie garden. Last year it had to go under wraps as I was so busy. This year my Mayoral duties come to an end in May and I will endeavour to start planting during the snow in February/March.
I will now make myself comfortable in my armchair, with a large cup of coffee (and a small ginger biscuit) and browse through those lovely colourful catalogues. I have time this week to relax. It’s exciting to think that next year I will be eating all that I grow. Now where did I put those diamonds?

what are hashtags? I promised some friends recently that I would publish a short piece on hashtags to explain what they are and how best to use them. Hashtags were originally used in information technology to reference certain subjects, also they were specifically used in Twitter for mainstream use and then Youtube, Google + and Facebook. They are used in this medium to highlight a subject so that a user can easily search for a particular subject, even if they have no connection to the originator. Hashtags are used with the symbol # and then the group words, with no spaces or symbols. You may see them on tv now, encouraging your involvement in the show socially, hashtags are also mentioned on radio programmes too, so for example:
#socialmedia #iloveyoubecause #business #thegadgetshow #downtonabbey
When you are wishing to join in on a subject such as social media and you want your content referenced for others to easily find, you would include the hashtag #socialmedia then when people search for that hashtag your copy will become visible (subject always to the privacy settings of the place posted, for instance I belong to a private group on Facebook, so the hashtags used there will not be found outside the group). Likewise if
SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET TIPS
you wanted to search on a subject you would type #socialmedia in the search box and all available under that thread will be presented to you. There are lots of existing hashtags so look carefully at the use of each before choosing to use one of your own, you might find an amusing usage of it in existence already. You could say that by using a hashtag you are creating an independent forum for people to use and jump in and out with no real membership requirements, making it one of the easiest forms of cascading information. Here’s another example from the Bexhillian Magazine facebook group which uses the hashtag #photography to generate interest amongst photography fans for the monthly front cover competition. To view the example and if you’d like to join the group, please visit www.facebook.com/groups/bexhillianmag
For a real interest test try #lbbros which is a Twitter feed for connecting people who are within freemasonry, socially, meet and share information and find out what it is all about. If you happen to have any specific questions about hashtags, whether it’s for you or your business, feel free to contact me via email, paul@mediabeetlesuk.com and I will see what I can do to help. If you have any other queries regarding social media or the internet then please feel free to ask for help.

if you hate it... change it! Why are we so fat? Having qualified with an HND in Obesity we turned to Debi Arnold our local expert to answer this question, and we got more than one answer. “It’s a hot subject at the moment, and I’ve learnt it’s one in which everyone seems to have an answer for, irrespective of their personal experience or knowledge. Firstly let me say it is not a case of eating less, and moving more. However it is case of taking responsibility both at individual level, and society level.
Once both society and the individual accept that obesity isn’t acceptable, you can start to reduce the trend, the costs, the illness, the depression and the difficulties many of our obese are faced with.” For the purpose of this feature I’m only going to focus on the individual responsibility and provide some immediate help. 1) If you are on medication, depressed, post operative, going through a rough patch, comfort eating, travel a lot, too busy, parents with a new-born, or have the ‘fat’ gene – please accept here and now, that none of these are a reason to be obese. Overweight and unhealthy, yes of course. But obesity requires ongoing overeating to the point of malnutrition generally, as obesity is exacerbated by the availability,
HEALTH & FITNESS
24/7, of processed ready made snacks, meals and drinks. In summary you don’t have to be obese, I can help. 2) Head straight to your fridge, cupboards and freezer and remove everything that is processed, man made, or fiddled with in some way so it is no longer the original food it used to be, and put it in one pile. Then create a 2nd pile of real food that has nothing added to it, at all, just the original form. If pile 1 is bigger than pile 2, there you have your problem. Switch that ratio, and the obesity problem is reduced. Simply because product is loaded with flavouring, preservatives, salt, fat, sugar (they need to make a profit after all!) and real food is loaded with nutrients that your body recognises and deals with well, unlike the product which it struggles with hourly causing an overload of fat storing hormones. I could add points 3, 4, 5 and 6 – however that would complicate the message. If you eat real food, (who doesn’t love a roast chicken with all the trimmings?), obesity is reduced. Eat man made product and you’re on a path to illness, obesity, early death, infertility and disability – it’s time we took it seriously” You don’t have to make changes alone, The Beach Pad in St Leonards specialises in fat loss (www.thebeachpad.com) providing all the help you could ask for including personal eating plans, cooking lessons, and one to one support to talk and consider small steps with behaviour changes, (let’s face it, there are often other reasons for overeating too).
