BEXHILL – an artists’ view Shouldn’t we all be in hibernation in January? Being indoors may be ok for some but this amateur artist likes to gain inspiration from nature and her surroundings so off outdoors it is with my dog in tow. One of the wonders of nature that I enjoy painting at this time of year are the sunrises and sunsets. Looking right towards Herbrand walk the sunset is truly magnificent. The vivid colours they produce are indeed amazing. Off set by the blues, greys and winter whites of the pebbles and stones on the beach. The background is dark and silhouetted against the lively colours of the sunset. Although the sun is week at this time of year it still has the power to be stunning. Sometimes the clouds are full with snow passing by to arrive another time. As the sun does set over the horizon beach huts can cast dark silhouettes. The well worn groins nestle into the stones and shingle, along side the groins that are relatively new. Different grainy woods offer the painter a different composition choice using greys and browns. At this part of Bexhill and this time of year the sea can be calm or wild. Frost comes along and mother nature uses her own brush with tiny sparkly flakes of jewels coating each and every pebble and stone. As we do tend to hibernate in winter mother nature is very kind in giving us the sunsets before it becomes too cold. Early afternoon you can start to see the colours appear. There will be a wisp of tell tale orange in the

YOUR art &STORIES crafts

otherwise blue or grey sky. Then the colours literally develop before your eyes blending into the indigo blue. The paint pallet can be well used with the colours that sunsets bring us. Warm tones and bright shades are welcome to be used for this cold time of the year. When the sharp cold feels like it has actually got inside you and bites you, using warm tones is a delight. Almost every colour, pinks, purple, oranges, reds and violets merge delightfully into one. Permanent rose and cadmium yellow can be mixed together to produce perfect shades of the sun. The brighter colours of paint are used for this subject as they form a magical presence in the sky that lasts only a short time. Along with the sunsets the early morning sunrise offers another colourful spectacle, if you are early enough. It looks stunning viewed through parts of the colonnade. The stark white of the buildings offer a magnificent contrast.

The thing about Herbrand Beach in Bexhill is that it offers space. To view the sunsets there is a joy. I often capture the sunsets in a photo for reference to draw and paint later when I am in the comfort of a warm shed with a cup of piping hot tea.

Coping with... STRESS Stress can affect many of us during Christmas and into the New Year period, this is due to relationship breakdown, bereavement, and financial problems etc. Most counsellors and other therapists have long believed that there is a strong link between emotional issues and bodily responses. Now, a new study from Ohio University has shown that dwelling on stressful events can actually increase levels of inflammation in the body, resulting in pain and other side effects.

YOUR HEALTH & STORIES FITNESS

Of these 34 candidates, 50% were then asked to think about their performance in the public speaking task, while the others were asked to think about neutral images and activities, such as family holidays or retail therapy. Blood samples showed that the levels of C-reactive protein were significantly higher in the subjects who were asked to dwell on their speech. For the 17 participants subjected to the interview, the levels of the inflammatory marker continued to rise for at least one hour after the speech. During the same time period, the marker returned to starting levels in the those who had been asked to focus on neutral thoughts. The C-reactive protein is primarily produced by the liver as part of the immune system’s initial inflammatory response. It rises in response to traumas, injuries or infections in the body. It is widely used as a clinical marker to determine if a patient has an infection, but also if he or she may be at risk for disease later in life.

Researchers have produced evidence that when asked to focus on an incident in the past which might have caused stress, levels of C-reactive protein in individuals increased. C-reactive protein is regarded as a marker of tissue inflammation, and a link has been found showing a response in physiological tissues. A group of young women were each asked to give a speech about their candidacy for a job to two interviewers, who listened with stone-faced expressions.

Qualified counsellors generally have extensive experience in working with clients suffering from stress. Through counselling, clients can have the chance to deal with that stress before it begins to create bodily, as well as emotional problems.

if you hate it... change it!

HEALTH & FITNESS

Are you already exercising and consider yourself quite fit? Then according to our local expert, Debi Arnold, you must consider changing your routine, so your body doesn’t become overfamiliar or even strained through repetition. Debi expanded further by saying “in order to get fitter, you need to challenge the body in some way, whether it is the heart, the muscles, the joints – simply continuing with your routine year after year, is probably doing you more harm than good. Changing your programme to take in different techniques or disciplines using your body in different ways, will without question improve your sport or fitness level” Whilst talking to Debi we also learnt that many of her clients do come to her because they already train, consider themselves fit, but in fact have started to see less results. Good examples of this are regular gym go-ers or runners, who have fallen into a rut, and unbeknown to them, the body is no longer challenged and is no longer getting stronger, slimmer, flexible or fitter. The Beach Pad in St Leonards is the home of change – not just in lifestyles for the obese or the unfit, but for those looking for a new way of getting fitter. Trained to level 4 in multiple exercise disciplines (which we learnt is one of the highest levels you can get), Debi trains her clients in Pilates, Endurance, Strength, and Stretch – which can incorporate anything from boxing, to ballet, to beach work or even running the steps up the cliff with weights, if that’s what your body needs for the world you live in.

Before you rejoin the gym, or continue with your regular exercise in 2014 ask yourself if you are happy with the results, happy with your waistline, happy with how well you feel – and if you are not getting the outcome or enjoyment you once did, it is time for a change. In as little as 10 minutes, you can be taken through a high intensity circuit challenge at The Beach Pad for £10, on a one to one basis, over looking the sea, and if you think you’ll smash 10 minutes, Debi convinces us, you probably won’t. She happily trains athletes alongside busy mums and dads, and has the knowledge to train you to your maximum.

YOUR STORIES

BEXHILL to bexhill This step of the journey is Hong Kong...

1st November 2013

Dear Annie,

How similar some places remain, despite time passing, development and changing social and political climates, Guangzhou (aside from a change of name) does not seem very much different to your descriptions. While it is only a brief stay, I am not sorry to be leaving so soon. This may be harsh, but the island of Shamian does seem to be the most pleasing area. My accommodation has been good, on the riverside of Pearl River, so it has been an easy ferry crossing to the island where you stayed during your time here. Chinamen are now allowed to cross the bridges over the stream which surrounds the settlement (although it is no longer a foreign settlement). As you know, the island had been acquired as a foreign concession in 1859, and the British and French were granted permission to set up their warehouses there, digging a trench around the area in 1851, making it an island. It wasn’t until 1946 that the Chinese Government formally took it back and have since renovated buildings, now regarding the area as being of significant cultural and architectural significance. From the relative quiet of the island, you cross the bridge and emerge, as you so eloquently put “into a filthy city, full of seething, dirty population, and where smells and sights of the most disgusting description meet you at every turn.” To be honest, I have not explored terribly far into the city, but have the impression of a ‘wet market’ by the river, with lines of fish and other creatures caught from the river lining the street, midst stagnant smelling and unpleasant looking waters. On the plus side i am fairly certain that they no longer hold public executions, although having seen other Chinese cities on my trip I can assure you Guangzhou (or Canton) is not the cleanest I have seen, as it may have been in 1877. Beijing and Shanghai were both pretty much spotless, although seeing people sweeping the streets is a regular sight throughout China (Guangzhou included). I have been unsuccessful in tracking down any of the many sights you visited during your stay (other than that already mentioned), it seemed you had a packed schedule. This, for me, has been a place to catch up with myself, to arrange somewhere to stay in Yangshuo, and await my train to Guilin. I think you would have very much liked Yangshuo, the pictures of it I have seen make for a very beautiful and dreamlike landscape. I hope this to be an ideal antidote to the hectic cities of China, before I embark on my journey into Vietnam. With kind regards, Louise Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum through January serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported

also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

KICK START THE NEW YEAR!

LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES

On a recent library visit I found a series of leaflets on Heritage Walks around Bexhill all written by museum researcher, Paul Wright . Each walk is around 2 miles long so perfect when you have friends and family visiting or just need to keep to that New Year’s resolution of getting fitter. We chose the East Parade Red Trail so that we could take in the sea air. So if you are heading off on one of these little walks, I have the easiest make ahead picnic treat for you, all sealed up in either one large jar or individual ones. Strange concept and very popular in Scandinavian countries, anyway once you’ve made it, you will want any excuse to make it again.

Picnic in a Jar • • • • • • • • • •

(serves 4) 400g salmon fillet, cut to bite size chunks 8 small new potatoes, scrubbed 1 small red onion, peeled and cut into thin slices and those slices halved. 2 spring onions, sliced thinly handful of chopped fresh parsley 2 sprigs of fresh dill, chopped 2 fresh bay leaves 2 cloves 1 garlic clove, crushed salt and pepper

In a saucepan bring the vinegar, sugar and water to the boil and then pour over the layers until covered. Seal and serve either a room temperature in about 15 minutes or so or chill and eat later. Keeping with the Scandinavian tradition – serve with very, very cold Aquavit. Skinny dip optional

Liquor: • 1/3 cup cider vinegar (this “cooks” salmon) • 150g white sugar • 1 cup water Cook the potatoes for about 10 minutes or so until just tender and cut into quarters or halves if very small. In a clean lidded jar start layering the ingredients starting with the potatoes then salmon, onion, herbs and then a fine sprinkle of salt and pepper and continue layering until all used up. Use less onion if you like. I like it as it is but I understand this might not be first date food.

Heritage Trail leaflets, by Bexhill Museum, produced with the assistance of Rother District Council and De La Warr Pavilion. These free leaflets are available from the museum, library and Tourist Information. #bexhillianmag

ONLINE SECURITY We spoke previously about protecting minors from the dangers of the internet, this month we felt it was the turn of the adults and businesses.

Email So let us first turn to email, do not, ever, open an email if: you are not waiting for it, you do not recognise the sender. Even then if there is an attachment, check with the sender to confirm that they sent the file. Of course banks will never contact you via email, and your friends purporting to be in trouble are all scams which are easily fell for. The way to look at this is, if it is important, the sender will find another way to contact you. We have noticed an upturn in viral activity and hacks over recent months, so pay particular care with attachments, always rinse them through your internet security. You do have internet security, don’t you? If not or you’re unsure about the email, then delete it.

Websites

SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET TIPS

and it is safe to send your details, and try to use recognised sources wherever possible.

Social Media Be cautious of following links on social media sites particularly from private messages in twitter which are quite often spam links using your friend’s hacked accounts, again delete them and advise your friends that they have been hacked and need to sort their passwords out. As regards to Facebook etc, make your profiles as private as you are comfortable with and ensure you check those settings, at the very least, every month. Facebook has a nasty habit of changing settings regularly. Try to remember the maxim that anything can be found online, so if you don’t want it discovered, don’t post it. Have a policy to follow people that you know, not random follows to grow your numbers, this serves no real purpose but creates holes in your security. Such as telling people when you are not at home for a period of time, robbers love this kind of data; common sense.

If you have a website such as WordPress then make sure you pick a very strong password, that is a mixture of characters both symbols and alphanumeric and never use simple user names like admin. This password should be changed frequently and should be different in all of your social media sites.

We hope you had a good Christmas and New Year and that you have a safe and secure, social media in 2014.

Internet Shopping

Happy New Year!

Always make sure when you are paying for something online, that the page where you add credit information or private data, that the page web address is prefixed with “https://” this shows you that you have established a secure connection to the vendor

Elsie’s Crafty Goings On... Hello Bexhillians! My friends call me Elsie and I am a follower of the science of ‘morfology’- which is my own made up word for the art of changing one thing into another! I am a keen writer, blogger, teacher and crafty-type creative person who looks for the unusual in everything. So, without further waffling, here we tootle with this month’s project:

TITILLATING TABLE~MATS | YOU WILL NEED: • • • • •

Old table mats from a charity shop (or grandma’s old dresser, but ask first!) Fabric (preferably cotton) or old magazines (or any paper that takes your fancy!) Craft knife and/or a pair of scissors PVA glue and a brush ( I find it easier to use an artists brush number 12) *Varnish (and the cleaned, glue-less, brush!)

METHOD: 1. Decide on a theme for your table mats! This sounds terribly simple but it always takes me the longest! Think about the occasion that your table mats are going to be used for as a start, because generally this will dictate what you will put on them! Are they for a special birthday, or just to be used for breakfast or evening meals? Are they a present or for a special tete a tete, Hen Night or Baby’s Christening etc? We have Valentines Day coming up, so maybe a couple of mats decorated with red roses would be ideal for that special meal! Once you have decided, tootle off into town to source either some cotton fabric (could even be an old dress in a Charity shop) or some wrapping paper from a retailer. You could even choose some paper that you already have or even comics or magazines. You could even photocopy some photographs! Nothing is off limits here! 2. If you are using paper/fabric with a small repeat, (where the images are close together and the same) tear or cut it up into small pieces approximately 2cm square but you don’t have to be exact! If you are using a larger image/s, cut out the section/s you like. (This is called ‘fussy cutting’!) 3. If you need a background, use the background of your paper/fabric or use another design from a different source. If you wish, you could even paint the mat, before you start, with a sample pot of egg-shell or emulsion. Make sure it is completely dry before you apply your design though! 4. Without sticking anything down, move the pieces around the mat in order to work out their final resting place. Try overlapping them, and change the angle of each piece, it may make the design more interesting.

ART & CRAFTS

Don’t worry if some pieces go over the edge of the mat, this can be sorted later. 5. Once you are happy with your design, apply a thin layer of glue to the underside of your fabric/paper pieces, making sure that all edges are pasted well, and carefully apply them to the mat ensuring there are no sticky up bits! NOTE: Do not fold or stick any pieces that go over the edge of the mat under the mat or cut them off at this stage. 6. Gently push out any air bubbles that may appear by working from the middle out towards the edges. This will occur more, the larger the pieces you have. Be careful not to rip the paper or push the fabric out of position. 7. Leave to dry. 8. Using the craft knife or the scissors, trim the edges around the mat so that they are neat and don’t overhang. 9. Brush on a layer of glue over the entire surface of the new-look table-mat in order to protect it’s surface when in use. 10. Leave to dry and then repeat section 9. 11. *If you wish to seal the design onto your mat to be heat-resistant, use varnish for section 9/10 and follow the manufacturers instructions. But this is optional.

This technique is called decoupage and is really simple to apply to all sorts of different objects that may have dated or perhaps have little value any more. Try this technique on china, old boxes, notebooks and envelope files, even furniture! I hope you have fun with this little project. Happy Morfing! Love,

Elsie. This idea was brought to you by Elsie and you can follow her on her blog if you wish… just type into a search engine: “Morf and the Chocolate Teapot”.

Happy New Year!

BEXHILL NEWS

news from the mayor of bexhill I missed December’s edition due to pressure of work and I apologise for that. Now I can keep you up to date once more. Well it’s all over. I mean the festive season. The running about like headless chickens trying to buy presents for teenagers who have an agenda of their own. ‘Did you like your present darling?’ to a teenage grandchild. ‘You might as well have bought me Sponge Bob Square Pants underwear for all this jumper will do for my street cred.’ A lesson learned there! Next time its money and they can please themselves! Doing my rounds last year and I was made quite aware of the struggle that some people were having and still are. More join their ranks every day. But at Christmas the emphasis is put on those most in need. Why? Because the consensus is that we should all be caring and looking out for one another during the festive season.

contact they have had in weeks and it will all spill out. They might be suspicious of you and they have every right to be because of all the con men about. Patience and empathy will have to take over. So my New Year message is:

LOOK OUT FOR A NEIGHBOUR YEAR. Give it a try you might enjoy their company. The older generation are maligned quite a bit as being duffers, don’t you believe it! They are a wealth of information, have a wicked sense of humour and have the patience to listen to you. It’s about time someone was listening to them.

Mrs. Frances Winterborn. Mayor of Bexhill

It’s not just this time of year we should be looking out for each other, it’s all year. People feel isolation all year round and with the Charter Centre in doubt as to whether it will remain open makes a bleak out look for a lot of the old folks. The majority of old people in Bexhill are over 75 years old and the only time they see anyone is when they desperately need help. I would like everyone to make a new year’s resolution and say, ‘This year I am going to look out for a neighbour’. I know you might avoid some of these old folks because they talk too much but have you asked the reason why? You will probably be the only human
