Our third issue! Going strong...
Well here we are on our third issue and I must say, we are as keen as mustard to expand the awareness of our colourful, little Bexhillian. We’re now on facebook with over 50 members in our group, posting their comments and introducing themselves. We’ve got Carnival week this month, Bexhill FM’s 14 Days of Summer, it’s all happening. I also met up with the Mayor of Bexhill, Mrs. Frances Winterborn (not your average official!) We had a very interesting chat about her objectives and goals for Bexhill; you can read about her inside this issue. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have pick up points – see last text page or call or email us with your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you. We are here to help promote businesses, to serve the local Bexhill community by helping to raise awareness of local charities and events going on in the area. If you think we might be able to help you then please get in touch. We’ll be online soon too! www.bexhillianmag.co.uk Thank you for your interest and have a great month everyone!

THE VALUE OF VINTAGE
FASHION
The most exciting thing about shopping for vintage is coming across the unexpected. It’s important to approach it with an open mind as you never know what treasures you will find. However there are a few golden rules to bear in mind to ensure that you are completely happy with your purchase. Buying vintage doesn’t necessarily mean buying at reduced cost. What you are paying for is exquisite craftsmanship and individuality – some of these garments are so well made that they have lasted for eighty years or more. Do not expect perfection – it’s very rare to find a garment which is in pristine condition, but the fact that these garments have a past simply adds to their charm. Over the years, sizing has changed considerably. You can’t rely on the size label contained within the garment, if indeed there is one. Modern sizing is much bigger and clothes may also have been altered over the years to accommodate the wearer. Experience will teach you to size vintage garments more accurately, but it is always worth carrying a tape measure with you, or asking the retailer if she has one to hand. Always try garments on and check them carefully for any damage. Often small holes can be repaired but look out particularly for any weakness in the fabric. Delicate fabrics can sometimes ‘shatter’ and you may see fine lines or tears along the grain of the fabric which cannot be repaired. Moth holes are another common source of damage. Clusters of tiny holes can be hidden with appliqué or motifs, but make sure the garment is cleaned before hanging it with other items. Frayed hems, broken zips and lost sequins can all be easily fixed by a competent seamstress. Stains are another common problem and can be very difficult to remove, particularly taking into account the age of the fabric. Dry cleaning can weaken delicate vintage fabrics so always seek advice from a reputable dry cleaner. Many items can be carefully hand washed and dried flat and it is worth trying natural remedies such as vinegar or bicarbonate of soda to remove stains – many proprietory stain removers are too harsh for vintage fabrics. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Shopping for vintage is fun and it gives you the opportunity to try lots of different individual looks. Use vintage items to complement what is already in your wardrobe; pair a modern evening dress with an exquisite vintage wrap or stole, or buy a gorgeous vintage cashmere sweater to pair with a modern skirt or trousers. Just keep an open mind and you can have a truly individual, stylish wardrobe which no-one is able to copy!

THE BIG SWITCH OFF!
YOUR STORIES
So it has been a month since a portion of the street lights in Bexhill controversially begun getting switched off after 12:30pm. Many of the town’s residents were furious that this idea was even proposed let alone implemented. But how is it fairing? It was estimated that the switch off would save the council 6p per household per month which does not sound an awful lot but the saving would come to a total of £40,000. That’s £40,000 pounds which could save two people their jobs in the emergency services rather than making cut backs there? I think that is a wiser investment than paying to keep lights on after the town goes to sleep. I first experienced the darkness one night walking home from the pub, being away I didn’t know it was going to happen so it was a bit of a shock, however I felt safe walking through the whole town and did not see another soul on the 15 minute walk home. It felt as if the town had shut down and gone to bed after midnight. The street lights being switched off are not new. In Hertfordshire where I go to university they have been switched off between 1am and the early hours of the morning for just over a year now. Understandably it caused much anger and worry over fears of safety especially as it was the main walk home from the university to most of the off campus accommodation. However incidents along this route remained minimal to none despite fears it would become a crime and violence hotspot. The council needs to cut spending, this is just a fact and although it may not be the most popular choice in many people’s eyes unfortunately street lights are obvious targets. But why not try and keep everyone happy and offer a compromise by switching off half of the street lights? It may only save half the money it saves now but it is still a saving and the streets will have enough light to keep people satisfied and safe. So to sum up yes turning off the lights is not the most comfortable idea for everyone, but we as a nation need to save money and cutting the lights is surely better than cutting jobs in the police or NHS? We should be thankful we live in a relatively peaceful and sensible town which relatively shuts down after midnight to a calm seaside slumber.

GARDENING ADVICE FOR JULY
GARDENING
Welcome once again to our monthly gardening column, where we will try to highlight all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great all year. Most years the garden will show a few star players amongst the borders, due to the conditions are just thriving, this year the whole border seems to be stars. Shrubs, trees, the veg garden and now the perennials are all doing well, that does only mean one thing or three, Feed, Weed and Support. The Lawn The grass has been a joy to cut this year so far, keep cutting as you see fit for your garden whether once or twice a week. Feed monthly if it requires. If we do get a dry spell, leave the grass to grow a little longer this will help to keep it greener. Hedges Privet and Lonicera Nitida will all need to be trimmed now. Cutting hard will be fine for both these hedges. Leave conifers to the end of the month and lightly trim. Vegetable gardenS Produce should still be arriving into the kitchen now, lettuce, radish and early potatoes. French and runners will need regular watering. Feed all crops with a liquid fertiliser. Create a herb garden – sow Parsley and Coriander to get you going. Watering Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid waste through evaporation and leaves being scorched on hot days. Use recycled water wherever possible, even better get a water butt! Mulch your borders to retain moisture (and keep down weeds!) Flower border Stake tall plants to protect from the wind and dead head to encourage new flowers. Irises can be lifted and divided now. Autumn-flowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Cut lavender for drying when in full flower. Unfortunately the weeds are still very active and regular hoeing will keep them down and you fitter! Date for your diary Hampton Court Flower Show 9th-14th beautiful location and great gardens. Lots of stalls and great ideas to take away. Long summer days and warm light evenings make July the month when even the most reluctant gardener will enjoy spending time outside. So remember after all your hard work to enjoy your garden, however large or small, if you need a hand then please visit my website at www.jwardgardens.co.uk Happy gardening!

BEXHILL NEWS
introducing our mayor of bexhill This year my chosen charity is Bexhill Caring Community. We are a local charity helping the people of Bexhill and offering a comprehensive range of services. These services are the community care service for medical appointments and funerals, form filling, equipment loan, housebound library, odd jobs, home help, visiting and sitting, gardening and shopping, dial-a-ride, six day centres, and general caring. We also have a hall to hire. We help about 5000 people per year and that number is growing due to the economic climate today. As more people need our help we have to fundraise more, nearly a full-time job. Asked when I became Mayor if I was having a Mayor’s ball I said no. In this climate it’s too expensive and I wanted something to share with the people of Bexhill. I decided to stage ‘The Mayor’s Variety Show’. The Caring Community has been going since the 50’s and this was an opportunity to make new people more aware of what we do and to say thank you to the supporters, past, present and future for all they have done for us, without them we would have closed long ago. The Variety show will be held at the De La Warr Pavilion on 13th October 2013. We are at the stage of collecting acts for the show and the heaviest end of the work is being carried out by the MacDonnell family. Joan is gathering the acts, Sarah (Joan’s daughter) has got connections all over the place and is an agent for theatre and film. Joanne (daughter no. 2) teaches media studies at a university and she is providing, scene shifters, technical people (lighting, sound), stage managers and maybe three cameras that will record the show and then we can sell the dvd’s on the night.
“We help about 5000 people per year.”
We will have a raffle at the interval, programmes will be available to buy and we will have such an array of talent all giving their time free to help support the Caring Community. I will put more details in subsequent Bexhillian magazines so watch this space!!

during the summer at the pavilion The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things…
We like to make an impression here at the Pavilion, especially during the summer months when people are out and about in the warm weather. So we wondered, how can we top 2012’s bus on the roof? How about a 10m high inflatable Felix The Cat squeezed into the north staircase? Or a Cyberman’s helmet from Doctor Who? Or an Egyptian mummified cat, thousands of years old? Or even a medieval reliquary housing (allegedly) the hand of a saint, sitting next to a 21st Century robotic hand? All these are included in our summer exhibition The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things which will open on 13th July. Curator (and Turner Prize-winning artist) Mark Leckey searched the internet to select over 70 random objects which appeared connected to each other on Google. After selecting and sourcing the objects and artworks, he has placed them together in a museum-like setting, in the galleries. The result is a cross between a cabinet of curiosities and the set of a science fiction film. Lecky asks the questions – do objects have meaning and value only when they are connected with each other? Can that meaning change once they are taken out of context or stand, side by side, with other objects? As always our exhibitions are free for everyone to enjoy. Some of the objects are weird, some are funny and others can be quite disturbing and not suitable for children – there will be signs indicating this. On Saturday afternoons, artists and writers will run creative sessions that explore the themes of the exhibition. For example, artist Sharon Haward invites visitors to bring in their own bizarre and weird object, where it will be photographed and added to a special archive. These sessions are free and you can drop in and out whenever you like. Open to everyone, the sessions are designed to help visitors understand the ideas behind the exhibition and so hopefully to enjoy it more. Most days there will also be Gallery Volunteers on hand to talk, listen and learn about the exhibition. The volunteers are local people who are not art experts but have a passion and enthusiasm for the work that we do. DLWP curator David Rhodes will lead Gallery Tours on some Saturdays and Mark Leckey will be giving a talk on 1st October. All details can be found on www.dlwp.com If you are interested in becoming a Gallery Volunteer, please contact sally.ann.lycett@dlwp.com

Brighton fashion week 2013
FASHION
Fresh back from working on Brighton Fashion Week, I am going to share with you the hottest hair look for the this summer. Soft and casual has made a big comeback this year. Hair is wearable and touchable. The super high Essex style buns are out, low slung casual ponytails are back in. With our somewhat unpredictable summer weather, a ponytail is a much safer bet than wearing your hair down loose! The great thing about this is, they are suitable for all hair types. Freshly washed hair is never idea for a ponytail as it can be too slippery, so day after hair is perfect. If you have washed your hair, prep with a sea salt spray or a dry shampoo to build up texture. Smooth your hair through with a large round brush and make sure you direct your hair dryer down the hair towards the ends. Although the hair feels casual, a super sharp parting is essential. Use a pin tail comb to make your parting crisp. Using a soft bristle brush smooth the hair down from the parting and really give the hair a good brush as this adds shine to the look.
Photographer: Malcolm Tam Brighton Fashion Week Zeitgeist Show 2013
Hold the hair very tight at the nape and tip your head back slightly while you secure it, this stops it going lumpy underneath. Always use a covered elastic to prevent breakage. At this point use a little hairspray but don’t overdo it as it will look crispy. When your pony tail is secure, use your pin tail comb to tease some softer wisps out at the front. And voilà ! Perfect summer style that will soften throughout the day.
Sharp tailoring was a strong theme through the show but I think this look lends itself well to your festival wardrobe too. Get your must have dungarees and wellies, and team this hairstyle with a flower headband and you have perfect festival chic! To glam it up for an evening look, use your straignteners to make the pony tail super flat and smooth it over with a gloss. A pony tail leaves your neck free to wear a statement oversized necklace. A very versatile look that can be played up or down for your perfect summer look.

children on facebook?
SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS
Let us change it up this month then shall we? I am tasked to write about Facebook and so I shall, if you want a business perspective then read our blog on www.mediabeetlesuk.com/facebook-business-growth otherwise prepare to enter the debate, should children be using Facebook? Are you a parent with a young child pressurising you to let them take part in Facebook? Then you are like everyone else, welcome to the club. I am fortunate enough to have had two teenagers who knew my views and had no access other than my computer. Now I have a seven year old who will probably not be far off a smart phone and access to everything that a phone like that entails, no problem for adults and teenagers, but young kids? Facebook has an age restriction of 13 and above and I applaud that, even thinking it should be later (subject to strict parental controls) however, these days we are in the minority for this view.
Prepare to enter the debate...
Those parents who disagree with me will give me all the arguments like such and such is doing it, or I will monitor them carefully and all those other reasons, but kids can get online through their phones and their friends phones, we need to be working with them to make them aware not only of the dangers lurking in social media, but the very fact that they need to be working on social skills, not shut away on a keyboard or keypad. Kids want to be in with the crowd, it has been so since we were kids and our parents before us. This is the new danger, social media bullying, and if we are not careful our kids will be subjected to almost continuous abuse from their peers. This concerns me greatly along with the ridiculously high risk of inappropriate friends, photographs and tagging. I love social media and all those things that I can get from it, but it isn’t all good. Sam and I have very strict rules we employ when using social, not only for our business but our personal lives. If we can’t say something nice we do not bother saying it, we try to offer a positive perspective and we encourage achievements and effort; sadly young kids do not. The use of swearing and pornography abounds and casual callousness seems fair game. It isn’t right. Keep kids off of social media, let us engage with them, get back to family values that made this country great, why not try talking to them over dinner instead of sitting in front of the telly?. Parents and guardians, if you want to express your views then you can email or comment in the Facebook Group on this subject. www.facebook.com/groups/BexhillianMag

HEALTH & FITNESS
#bexhillianmag
I like to move it, move it... Not just a tune from Madagascar – it’s a fact that everyone feels better after some exercise. Don’t they? Sadly not. We’ve all been bullied into exercising three times a week for half an hour at a time at a moderate intensity. Well who knows what THAT means. And hands up if you do it? It’s probably best to forget everything you’ve ever been told. And just remember this: The body is designed to bend, reach, sit, stretch, run, walk, roll over, twist, stand, climb, sit down, crawl, kneel, crouch, squat, lean.... And so on. And generally speaking the reasons why you become unable to do these things over time, injury or disability aside, is because, well, you’ve stopped doing them over time... You JUST need to be fit enough for your world. Such as playing with the grandchildren on the floor, taking the wheely bin out, weeding the garden, cleaning the windows, typing away all day, reaching for the ketchup, plugging the Hoover in, twisting for your seat belt, bit of golf or walking the dog OR whatever you used to be able to do but struggle with now, you CAN do again. The body did it once, it is still designed to do it. It just needs reminding. So if you find yourself making excuses, or asking someone else to do it, or even considering raising the plug sockets at home... (it happens!) it’s time to remind your body about the good old days and bring it back to life. And the best way to do that is to simply repeat the movements you are struggling with. Easier said than done I know. Which is why I train my clients to be fit for their world. Not mine, not Andy Murrays. But yours. We’ll find your weak spots and practice them. Building up your confidence first with extremely basic moves that your body is designed to do, and then we’ll do it some more in a controlled and supported environment. One to one so no one is watching, apart from the seagulls. And then you’ll be fit as a fiddle moving freely and probably knocking ten years off you in the process. So before you take up the gym or squash or pounding the pavements to get ‘fit’ – ask yourself first what you need to be fit enough for. It might just be gentle stretching and relaxing Pilates, or a bit of boxing to build up your strength. Either way, enjoy whatever it is you choose to do, there is something for everyone, and if you don’t know yet what your ‘something’ is – try a taster session for free with me at The Beach Pad and we’ll find it. But the best way to be able to do all those things, is to keep doing all those things. If it starts getting tricky, do it twice!

stress and how to overcome it
Thinking positive is really good for your health. Have you ever noticed the way your body feels when you are going through a stressful time in your life? Your head feels heavy, your tummy feels tight, you are on a constant alert from anxiety and you may feel tired more often than not. It is harder to concentrate on everyday tasks such as cooking a meal or doing the laundry. Sometimes when the stress becomes too much it is best to take a step back to be able to revaluate the situation. A nice walk at the beach or just a cup of tea can make all the difference. Here is an example of a stressful situation: Your boss asks you to do overtime, but at home you are falling behind with the chores, you are not spending as much time with your family as you hoped you would be. You try to tell your boss that you are unable to do the overtime but before you get a chance they have already said thank you and left the room. Now you feel overwhelmed and stressed. You need to be open, honest and direct remember it is your time and your life to live. You need to explain to your boss that you already do all you can and have no intention of letting them down, but at the same time you need to be there for your family and unfortunately you have let them down. Not only will you get respect for your honesty, you will feel less stressed in the process. Sometimes you need to take a step back and ask yourself this “if this was happening to a friend what advice would you give them?” We usually find that our most stressful situations are not actually caused by ourselves, it is very easy to get caught up in a loved ones problems. If you can change the way you think and feel towards whatever the stress is you are going through and take a step back and concentrate on yourself, then you will become more resilient and stronger to be able to help others in need. You will notice the changes to yourself as soon as you step away from the situation you are caught up in, your headaches will go and your body and concentration will go back to normal. Remember it is never selfish to put yourself first, it is your life and yours only to live. Treat yourself to something nice for a change, maybe you have neglected yourself for far too long putting everyone first before yourself. It may be something as small as a cd or a book or you might book yourself a spa break whatever you decide it is your choice so treat yourself. Don’t let stress get to you, take a nice walk on the beach, in the fresh air breath in the sea air and remember you only get one life so make the choices that are right for you, don’t waste precious time dwelling on the negatives always focus on the positive things you have going for you. Write a list of all the negative things in your life right now and for every one negative thing write three positives, also every day think before you go to bed at night of all the positive things that happened to you during the day. I am sure in time that you will start to feel better and learn to look after yourself.
