Say it with flowers ...Mum’s love that.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we have some top ‘Rules of Engagement’ on how to give your Mum the day she deserves. Also I was thinking about flowers of Springtime and with the flower of the month being the daffodil, as you will see from our beautiful cover shot, it’s meaning is new beginnings, eternal life and rebirth. They also represent happiness and prosperity. Other flowers you may want to give Mum are Orchids meaning beauty and refinement, Amaryllis meaning splendid beauty or pink Roses which mean appreciation, gracefulness and thanks. Now, is the sunshine going to give us a break in amongst so much rain? I really feel for those poor people that have suffered so terribly in the floods. There are details on the Mayor’s News page about the flood alerts and numbers to call should you need to. We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back, and on our website or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you.

Clean Seas Please! Have you ever thought about what happens to the stuff you put down your toilet or your sink? Our seas are not in a good way at the moment. On 10th October 2015, new EU standards could mean the water at our beaches is unfit to swim in. The Clean Seas Please campaign is all about people coming together to improve the quality of water in our local seas. We want to raise awareness and understanding of the problems facing our nearby beaches at the moment. By making a few changes now, we can have a lasting positive impact.

LOCAL NEWS

Another issue is bacteria in the droppings of the many seagulls on the beaches being washed into the sea so we need to think about our rubbish on the beach too. The less food seagulls have to eat, the less droppings they leave. We want as many people as possible to take responsibility for spreading the word. If we can overcome these problems as a community our beaches can be among the best in the country and remain lovely places for all to visit. Clean Seas Please is working with trades, businesses and most importantly the people of Hastings and Bexhill, and the surrounding area, to do as much as we can to help.

There are lots of little changes that we in the local area can make in our everyday lives to limit the pollution of our rivers and sea water.

We are involved in many local events to promote the work that is already being done and to give more information about the campaign.

Many people are already helping by changing what they put down the toilet or sink, using a bin in their bathrooms for non-human waste and scraping fat / food waste off their dishes before washing up.

The campaign is funded by the Environment Agency and managed by Hastings Voluntary Action and Rother Voluntary Action.

A variety of factors contribute to pollution, such as waste getting into the water; as well as waste water from washing machines or dish waters going into the wrong water pipes.

If you want to find out more and support the campaign, go to www.cleanseasplease.net, follow @cleanseasplease on Twitter and visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ cleanseasplease

Elsie’s Crafty Goings On... Hello, once again, dear Bexhillian friends! As I sit here, munching my way through a bag of those sugar-coated chocolatey egg things in readiness for Easter (!) and mildly thinking of our next exciting craft project, I was unexpectedly hit with inspiration! Sit down with a cup of the good stuff and a biccie or two, and I shaIl tell all. I am currently working, in my dear little snug, on developing the ‘look’ of my fabric flower brooches and I have been gathering little crops of various-sized buttons lately from all and sundry, including our ever expanding wealth of charity shops. (I cannot say this too loudly however, for a friend of mine has a phobia against these harmless fastenings and I wouldn’t want to offend!) I HAVE to say however that they are the most versatile jolly things in my humble opinion and I love them! I used to sit for hours studying my grandmother’s stash, making patterns and putting aside my favourite ones to share with my long-suffering rellies! In later years, when my grandma had passed on and left me her little treasures hoarded in an old tin, did I find out how useful they were! Not just simply as decorative adornments but also as an aid in teaching my own little Lobster how to sort, count, learn her colours and make mathematical calculations. Pretty and practical! Hoorah! Sew (no pun intended!) here we jolly well go… Buttons Up! This very simple project can be as easy, or as hard, as you wish and you can make all sorts of great things: a fun pattern, a personalised message or a delightful image! You will need: • measuring tape or a ruler • an empty picture frame with some plain fabric stretched and stapled to the back • a sheet of paper and a pencil • a selection of buttons

ART & CRAFTS

a needle and some thread (any will do but embroidery is best)

Method: 1. Measure the frame on the inside and cut out the paper to match it’s size. Place the paper on a flat surface and arrange the buttons on it until you are happy with your design. 2. Starting at an edge of your finished creation, transpose your design, sewing one button at a time, onto the fabric. Do NOT snip the thread unless you are using threads of differing colours. 3. Work your way around the the design fastening off the thread securely by sewing it into the stitches at the back of the fabric. Now then, dear ones, here is a tiny tip for all you budding buttoners! Try sewing your buttons on in different ways, and try layering your buttons, one on top of the other! I know this sounds obvious, but believe you me, it can make or break a design! Have a gander at the photograph, just so that you can see what I mean. I told you this was an exciting project! Happy buttoning everyone, until next time,

Elsie.

BEXHILL to bexhill... From Northern Borneo

3rd February 2014

Dear Annie

I’ve just spent the last couple of weeks in Malaysian (Northern) Borneo, now known as Sabah, crossing your path in my travels. In particular, I was keen to find the caves you visited looking for the swiftlets’ nests, harvested for the famous bird’s nest soup. The museum in Bexhill now holds the white one you brought back from your journey (they are now sold in boxed packages at the airport!).

The Madai caves are in an especially beautiful part of the country, part of the Danum Valley which is now an area of special scientific interest. There are so many creatures and plants which are not to be found anywhere else in the world and so many of them have been put at risk with the mass deforestation of areas of land. I visited several of the sanctuary’s which have been established to help, Sepilok being home to several including the Orang Utan and Sun Bear (Honey Bear) and the proboscis monkey sanctuary’s. These are set in spectacular rain forests which are at least protected by their presence for the mean time. The rain forests are described as the orchestras of the land, filled with life and activity, while what has largely replaced them has been palm oil plantations, known for their complete silence, where Orang Utans have been found desperately looking for food and shelter. However, despite more remote areas being relatively more accessible than they were at the time of your journey, I was unfortunately unable to reach the Madai caves. However, I did get to the Gormantong caves that eluded you during your trip. They look of a similar size and construction and it was similarly full of the guano which leaves quite a strong odour. It was well worth the trip, they are very impressive. I have attempted to capture them in photographs and was especially surprised to find people living inside looking after them, and to see the ladders they use to be similarly unsteady in appearance to those used in the nineteenth century. The next harvest isn’t until April so there was little activity other than our visiting. I am next heading towards Australia, so looking forward to many more places that you and Lord Brassey visited. I will write again on my arrival. With kind regards, Louise Kenward.

Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is

planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

Coping with... hair loss For most of us the way we look and feel is very important and losing our hair can be devastating, making us feel vulnerable and exposed. This can affect our self-confidence and self-esteem, which in turn may lead to depression. Such reactions are completely normal and understandable and some people find it takes time to adjust. Each person will find their own way of dealing with losing their hair. Talking to a Counsellor may be helpful for some people, in order to talk about their feelings around hair loss.

Some are through Alopecia, Male Pattern Baldness, stress and trauma, disease and compulsive pulling (trichotillomania). Studies have shown that poor nutrition, a limited food intake and deficiencies in certain nutrients can also cause hair thinning. A diet high in animal fats (often found in fast food) and vitamin A is also thought to have an effect on hair loss. Our nutritionist at Younique can provide advice and support on a suitable diet for you. If you feel like talking and meeting others in the same situation, Younique Wellbeing Studios run informal coffee mornings to introduce people who can help. mother’s day – how to get it right The last Sunday of the month is Mother’s Day, easy to remember and I’ll give you some insider knowledge on how to make the Mum in your household feel like a queen for a day. Rule number 1 - Breakfast Breakfast in bed or a nicely laid kitchen table, whichever works but keep it simple and achievable – toast and a cup of tea will do and tidy up afterwards. Mum’s hate tidying on Mother’s Day. Rule number 2 - Presents Don’t go mad. Mums get cross that you’ve spent all your money on her and then she feels guilty that she made you feel bad. A card and something affordable like a bunch of flowers or small gift. Tidy away the wrappings or put the flowers in a vase for her. Mum’s hate tidying up on Mother’s Day. Rule number 3 - Lunch/Dinner It doesn’t matter what it is just as long as Mum doesn’t have to step in and end up cooking it herself. Keep it simple. You could also break up the day with a beach or woody walk and take a picnic. Even a carpet picnic in front of the TV (Mum gets remote control for the day – oh yes). Tidy up afterwards. Mum’s hate tidying up on Mother’s Day. Cards and gifts are nice but what Mum’s really love is your effort and your time – it makes us feel appreciated. But most of all – not to be tidying up on Mothers day. Got it?

Cut the top of the loaf of bread, this will act as your lid. Scoop out the bread, leaving just a crusty shell. Then spread a layer of mayonnaise/mustard mix over inside and lid. Start layering inside of loaf with ham, cheese, rocket, salami, tomatoes and salt and pepper. Push layers down firmly then see if you can get more layers in. Place lid on and cut into big cake-like slices.

BEXHILL NEWS

news from the mayor of bexhill Well my seed have arrived! They are all spread out on the table in the conservatory, leeks, sprouts, cabbage, carrots and several others. There are about twenty packets. It’s so exciting. It is raining again and the wind is blowing. I watch the little boat I have tied to the rotary dryer on my top lawn, bobbing up and down and going round and round. I must move it. My day dreaming is disturbed by my husband arriving back from his walk with our boxer dog. She has just shaken herself all over the hall which is newly decorated, Andrew has tried to catch her in a rugby style tackle and missed, she is in the conservatory saying hello by jumping up and down and wagging her lack of tail, rubbing herself off my leg. The place is a shambles. Where was I was? Oh yes everything back to normal. The little boat has sunk! I hear good news from the Somerset levels that they have Dutch engineers looking at the problem. There was an aerial photograph of the Dutch fields in Sunday’s paper, showing the system that they use in Holland. I hope those who have been flooded will get all the help they need and get things back to how they were. There is nothing worse than flooding, I know, sadly we were flooded in Yorkshire. I have a friend who has connections with Holland and he tells me that every Dutch town hall in the country has a list of children who’s fingers were measured for thickness and length. This is for emergencies only. I am wondering whether to believe him or not.

Look after your grandparents and the elderly. Are they warm, safe and dry?

what are rss feeds? This month I felt it may be worthwhile tackling the subject of RSS feeds, to most people you might say what on earth are they? To those who use them, (and that is probably a lot of you) they are useful, helpful and dynamic. When I say most of you, that will be all of you who use iTunes, particularly podcasts but also music RSS stands for really simple syndication, which is jargon talk for an address that stores update information on your site (podcast, blog, etc) and publishes it out to the world. On it’s own this is not very helpful, but if you accompany with a reader to go out and search for updated feeds, suddenly you can have the latest information delivered straight to your mail or reader. Exactly like iTunes does, iTunes doesn’t store all the music on there, it simply links out to other sources that hold that information, iTunes is simply a customised RSS reader. As an individual, you might search websites of general interest to your hobbies, such as martial arts, in my case. Look for the little orange RSS icon, when you find a site you like with great information, subscribe by clicking on that button, depending on how they have set their system you will either subscribe directly on the site, or you will be taken to a text page of RSS content. Simply copy the web address in the top address bar and copy this into your email system or RSS reader, under the heading “add RSS feeds”. This will subscribe for you and deliver the updated information direct to your email or reader. As a business, you have the opportunity to encourage people to subscribe to receive your latest posts, or products and then as you update your site, you then know that that information is being broadcast to your

SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET TIPS

subscribing public. Not always great for your web analytics as people no longer have to visit your site. Remember though, that you are trying to make your customer or reader’s experience much more pleasurable and if that means keeping them updated rather than them visiting your site regularly this is a worthy trade off, but does mean that you should track your RSS feeds for subscriptions, which will tell you how many subscribers and where from etc. (This is a complex thing to do and not for this article). My email has rather a lot of subscriptions happening regularly over a day, they build up on the subject of social media, and at the end of the day or a convenient point, I skim through to find subjects that interest me or things that have changed in the industry that I should be aware of. This means, on any one day I may have up to 100 feed articles arrive in my inbox, I can tell quickly from the subject title whether I wish to read the article, and when you are on the cutting edge, you can see a lot of people duplicating information, so for me, it is never as bad as seeing such a large number. It does keep me updated and people find it amazing that I assimilate so much new information. When you become skilled at the skimming, you will find yourself adding other areas in your life, such as news, hobbies, career. Why not have a look at RSS feeds and have a go at copying your website RSS feed (if you have one) into the Bexhillian Facebook Group. If you have particular questions or problems, you can find me on the FB group and I will do my best to help.

if you hate it... change it! Aches and Pains and the benefits of MASSAGE

HEALTH & FITNESS

everyone taking part in a sport for pleasure or competition should book a regular massage treatment to enable more training, at a higher level, with far less risk of injury.

Massage for Relaxation

Massage is quite often considered a once-ayear treat at a spa, if we are lucky enough that is. We are one of the few countries that doesn’t feature massage into its daily life, yet the advantages of massage for both relaxation and sport benefit are renowned.

Sport Massage

(deep tissue manipulation) After a period of training or sport there will be an accumulation of waste material, possibly some micro-trauma and likely muscle swelling. The tissues will be nutritionally depleted, and most will be in need of repair. During the recovery period it is common for the tissues to become sticky and can adhere muscle fibres together. For a muscle to function, the fibres need to glide alongside or over each other, but not if they are stuck together. Massage quite literally breaks the sticky fibres apart. Which is why sports massage can hurt, a little… Sport Massage greatly improves the ‘recovery’ period whilst the traumatised muscle and tissue heals. The quality of recovery is key to effective training, and

Relaxation massage is all about relaxing. It focuses on giving the client time to recover from the stresses of daily life. When you experience relaxation massage, you can expect a treatment that involves: • Long smooth gliding strokes that are rhythmic and flowing • Pressure that is deeply relaxing, but not painful • A treatment that is designed to soothe and relax you, not to relieve underlying ailments • A therapist who also takes the massage environment into account – 1 look for soothing music, warm towels, and the use of essential oils Of course – you could ask your therapist for a bit of both, ensuring YOU get to relax, and your muscles do too. But check first they can do both; some therapists are only trained in one discipline or the other. In professional settings massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor. The client may be fully or partially clothed or unclothed, so ask before booking if you are unsure or uncomfortable with the options.
