YOUR STORIES
BEXHILL to bexhill... From Adelaide to Melbourne. Dear Annie,
Having journeyed through the ‘red centre’ from Darwin I have travelled through Adelaide and arrived in Victoria. Taking the train from Adelaide to Melbourne, it runs along the same track of your trip from the pretty parkland city into the countryside. I gather the roads, on the whole, are a good deal improved since then, many now sealed – although much of the country remains Along the Great Ocean Ro ad accessed only by unsealed roads, if roads exist at all. It is incredible what a great expanse of land Australia is, and so much still unexplored and unknown. There is a wonderful mystery about it and I have loved watching the landscape from my train journeys. Arriving in the bustle of the cities has been something of a shock to the system after so much open space. It makes me wonder what it was like for you after all that time at sea, arriving in new lands with new people at each destination. I had just a few days in Adelaide before travelling on to Melbourne and I have been particularly impressed with the libraries here, they are beautiful buildings and fantastic resources. Indeed in Melbourne I even ran into someone who’s ancestor is meant to have jumped ship from the ‘Sunbeam’ during your voyage here! The cities are very modern and it was lovely to catch up with new and old friends, spending the day in St Kilda, and seeing A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Botanical Gardens. A trip to see the Little Penguins on Phillip Island and a tour of the Great Ocean Road were also highlights of Melbourne for me, and again I was reminded of what a treacherous coastline that is, and would have been for the ‘Sunbeam’, with 160 sea disasters and many ship wrecks now on the sea bed. I take the train next to Sydney and will write again once I arrive. With best wishes, Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is
planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

gardening advice for MAY Hope you all had a nice Easter break. With fresh growth emerging throughout the garden as the weather warms, May is possibly the best month to get out into the garden. The riot of spring colours lifts the spirits and the fresh growth reminds us of the beauty to come. As the daylight saving takes effect; longer days mean more time to enjoy and add more life to your reawakening garden. Hopefully this may inspire and help you to get the most out of your garden. The Lawn The perfect lawn needs love and attention. Lawns need some help to recover from the winter and get in top shape for the coming season. The grass will be growing vigorously now and will need a cut at least fortnightly – keep those blades high at first lowering them gradually. If moss is a problem, choose a combined fertiliser and moss killer when feeding the lawn. Trees and Shrubs Trim evergreen hedges to keep them neat. Evergreens such as Viburnum tinus can also still be trimmed this month. • Prune spring-flowering shrubs such as these: Berberis, Choisya and Ribes after they have finished flowering. • Prune overcrowded or the dead stems of the Clematis montana, once it has finished flowering – don’t worry it will take even hard pruning very well. • Late Spring is a good time to coppice or pollard (cut back hard) Eucalyptus. General Maintenance Apply a liquid fertiliser to spring bulbs after they have flowered, to encourage good flowering next year, and help prevent daffodil blindness. Allow the foliage of daffodils and the other spring-flowering bulbs to die back naturally – resist the temptation to just mow

over them! Lift clumps of forget-me-not once the display wanes, and before too many seeds are released. (They can become invasive if left unchecked.) Annual and perennial weeds are thriving with the warmer soil, so do hoe borders regularly to prevent them spreading their seeds. The Vegetable Garden With the soil warming up it is the perfect time to get sowing – remember the plants will need a lot of watering in the coming months so collecting rainwater is important. Sow French beans, runner beans, squash, cucumbers and pumpkin seeds directly into prepared beds outside. Be alert to late frosts (for which a covering of horticultural fleece should provide sufficient protection). Earth up potatoes when the shoots are 23cm (9in) high, in order to prevent the new tubers going green. Pest Watch Slugs will begin to make their unwelcome appearance in May. I’ve found that a beer trap is the ideal way to reduce their presence. Simply sink a bowl or glass into the soil near to where they are doing damage, and fill the glass with beer. The slugs are irresistibly drawn to the beverage and fall into the vessel to their doom. Dates for your diary:RHS Malvern Spring Festival 8th-11th Chelsea Flower Show 20th-24th May Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do; if you need a hand visit my website below. if you hate it... change it! HANDS UP IF YOU DON’T EXERCISE! You are not alone – actually over 78% of the population don’t either – for the purpose of this article we mean exercise that increases your wellbeing or fitness level by improving your mobility, health complaints, aches and pains, or weight gain – as opposed to Olympic style tri-athlete type exercise. So we asked Debi, our resident ‘fitness and fat-loss’ writer to help sort the wheat from the chaff, or the gym from the trainer, so’s to speak. “There is absolutely no point in being fitter than you need, it will expire fairly quickly unless you not only maintain it, but you also continually change your programme to keep getting ‘fitter’. I see people every day who come to me to ‘get fitter’, and when I ask them why, they’re short on answers. Generally speaking, they have a sense of guilt and feel they should be doing ‘something’, or have been told by their doctor their back/knees/weight (and so on) will improve if they exercise. What the Dr. doesn’t go on to explain is what type of exercise, where to exercise, how and when to exercise, leaving the patient to ponder the option of a gym, keep fit class or personal trainer; not forgetting YouTube or celebrity DVD’s for some inspiration!” Debis’ top tips! Choosing which exercise suits you: 1 – Be specific and goal orientated for instance, ‘my back is weak and it needs to get stronger for the life I lead’; ‘I’m gaining weight since I started an office job and I need to change the direction of travel’; ‘since my operation my knees are really stiff and I struggle to get off the sofa or out of the car’; ‘my neck is killing me as I work from a lap top’; ‘I’ve lost my way since having a baby and need to get back into shape, feel strong again’; ‘ I am constantly tired, I feel old and I
HEALTH & FITNESS
ache – I want to feel well again’ and ‘ I used to exercise a lot – and just miss feeling good’. 2 – Ask for advice or search for the right type of exercise for your needs, that is, YOUR needs, not your husband, or your neighbour. You might have different jobs and different requirements – so seek out the best exercise for you. One size does not fit all – not one gym, class, trainer or DVD will suit all your needs I’m afraid to say.
3 – Take advantage of specialists in exercise, (such as Debi) who will advise the RIGHT strategy, action plan and ideas for YOU – and this could include an informal exercise session for a small fee, a one to one, or suggestions of where to go locally to meet your goals and your budget. There are myriad options for exercise available to you – and it is difficult to know where to start, especially if you are self conscious or nervous about joining a group. Debi has assured us at The Bexhillian, that all our readers will be spoilt and treated with the attention they deserve!

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! May and June are as busy as ever at the de la warr pavilion with some exciting events and thoughtprovoking exhibitions. For the Big Band fans of Bexhill, we have two different shows for you to enjoy. Radio 4 favourite Alex Horne and his band The Horne Section will present a family show of live music and comedy. If you don’t think your kids know enough about instruments and live music, then this is the show for them! And for the grown ups we welcome back the BBC Big Band with Claire Martin who celebrate the Big Band Divas on Spring Bank Holiday Monday. Cinema Nights returns in May with a short Awards Season of Gravity (Oscar for Best Director), Twelve Years A Slave (Oscar for Best Picture), and Wolf of Wall Street (Golden Globe for Best Actor). We are also delighted to support the Bexhill Dementia Action Alliance by presenting a matinee of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Monday 19 May where all proceeds will go to the Alliance. Looking forward to June and theatre goers will be pleased to hear that we are showing an encore broadcast of the Olivier Award winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and a live
broadcast of the most recent Alan Ayckbourn revival A Small Family Business.
Keep an eye on the local press for an unmissable live broadcast event in early June. Embargoed at the time of going to press, this will be announced on 2 May and will be an exceptional experience, featuring major stars of radio, film and song coming together in a historic London venue to commemorate a very special D-Day anniversary. Opening on 17 May in Gallery 2, are 19 rare prints by German WW1 artist Otto Dix, the prints are kindly on loan to us by the British Museum. These powerful and disturbing images are complemented by a small display in the rooftop foyer showing photographs taken in the trenches by an army doctor during the first few months of the war, entitled ‘Fred’s War’. As ever there is something for everyone at the Pavilion. We look forward to seeing you here.

VINTAGE FASHION
SEWING BEES When I’m not busy sourcing gorgeous vintage gowns, I can normally be found restoring them or indulging in other sewing projects. I think any form of craft can be both relaxing and therapeutic. BBC’s programme The Great British Sewing Bee has most certainly awakened a huge interest in textile craft. Maybe it has inspired you to have a go! Of course you don’t have to make an item of clothing. You could start off with a really simple project for the home, such as a cushion or tablecloth, or maybe a simple apron for yourself. You could even begin with a simple repair, such as replacing a missing button or shortening a hem. What’s important is to have a go! Sewing is nothing to be frightened of – if it goes wrong, what does it matter! Most mistakes can be rectified and if it can’t, well, just rethink whatever it is you are making! As well as the satisfaction of being able to say ‘I made this myself’, there can also be
the social side. It’s so rewarding to meet likeminded people to discuss projects with, and there a quite a lot of social groups setting up now, where you can meet like minded people and have a natter! If you’re not confident about starting up on your own, think about joining a class where there is a teacher on hand to advise you. Thimbleinas in Bexhill run classes so I believe, but if you want advice then their staff are very knowledgeable and they hold a good range of haberdashery, sewing machines and some fabrics. Why not give it a go? You may be pleasantly surprised and maybe one day you could find yourself as a contestant on The Great British Sewing Bee. Who knows where your knowledge may lead!

a taste of summer
LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES
Summer is certainly coming and what better way to embrace the season with a beach or garden barbecue. Everyone can get involved: Chief Fire Starter; Chef; Sous Chef and best job of all - Bar Tender. Being the Chef for this dish is the easiest job and by just laying out the ingredients on the barbeque and then a quick move from grill to plate and a sprinkle of parsley and squeeze of lemon – you are done. Minimum effort, maximum taste as all good seafood dishes should be.
Scallops Cooked in their Shell (serves 2)
What you’ll need:
• • • • • • • •
4 prepared Rye Bay scallops Garlic, 1 clove finely chopped Butter White wine Salt and freshly ground black pepper Parsley, finely chopped Lemon juice 4 fresh large shell-on prawns
Method: Place 2 scallops in each shell (your fishmonger will let you have these for free if you ask nicely). Mix garlic with a large knob of butter and divide between the two shells. Add a splash of white wine and salt & pepper over each one. Place shells on your barbecue when it’s at medium heat cook for 8 minutes checking cooked through. The prawns will only take 2 minutes each side until pink depending on size of prawns. Sprinkle with the parsley, a squeeze of lemon juice and some bread to mop up those delicious juices in the bottom of each shell.
Bar Tender – don’t forget to serve the rest of the white wine. Rye Bay Scallops and King Prawns all bought locally at Arcade Fisheries in Hastings. Very friendly and helpful people – give them a go!

Coping with... SPRAINS AND STRAINS Sprains and strains happen as a result of a sporting/physical activity injury or an accident that involves a fall or collision. A Sprain is damage to a ligament which has been overstretched or torn occurring in the knee, ankle, wrist or thumb. A ligament is a band of strong tissue around a joint that attach bones together. A Strain is damage to muscle fibres which have been overstretched, commonly a hamstring, calf muscle, quads and lumbar area. This usually occurs during physical activities such as running, sport or even gardening. They are most likely to occur if you: • Over reach • Make a sudden change of direction • Fall and land awkwardly • Make sudden fast or slow movements • Are at an increased risk through lack of exercise, fatigue, inadequate warm up or poor technique. Prevention: Do regular exercise incorporating stretching and strengthening techniques, warm up before physical activities, stretch after activity to cool down afterwards, wear the appropriate footwear. All these apply from the novice to professional sports person. Symptoms include: • Pain • Swelling/inflammation • Loss of movement • Bruising Following injury, and if it does not require medical attention, use the P.R.I.C.E advice: • • •
Protect the site from further injury Rest – avoid activity for 72 hours Ice – apply ice wrapped in a damp tea towel or a bag of frozen peas 2-3 hourly and no longer than 15 minutes. Do not
•
•
allow ice to touch the skin as this could cause an ice burn. Do not leave on at night as it may damage the skin. Compression – A bandage or tubigrip will offer support to the affected area. It should feel snug but not too tight to restrict bloodflow. Elevation – Keep the affected limb raised on a stool or in a sling.
Sprains – Keep the joint mobile with a gentle range of movements. Strains – Immobilise the muscle for 48 hours then gradually start to use it again. Most sprains and strains improve after a few days but seek medical advice if the pain and swelling increases and mobility is reduced. Rehab: Some injuries can take a number of weeks to recover from fully so return to physical activity should be done with caution. Strengthening and stretching exercises from a physical therapist can be beneficial. Massage has a number of benefits, it increases blood and lymph supply aiding healing to the damaged area. It also helps restore mobility as well as stretching muscles and breaking down scar tissue.

PANTMAN NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT! As women prepare for Race for Life events, local man Damon Pinder aka Pantman has signed up for this years’ Y Front Run 2014 Tour and will be taking part in all six runs, starting with Crawley 14th May and ending up in Hastings on 28th September. Organised by Jo Brazier and Hollie Chant. The 5K men-only runs are aimed at raising awareness and money for research, treatment and palliative care in particular for men’s cancers. They are supporting Cancer Research UK, Balls to Cancer and the hospice in the town where the runs take place. Pantman’s mission is to raise awareness both of men’s cancers and the Tour. He is also hoping that other men will speak out about their experiences to raise awareness and that even more guys will get involved by signing up to run to support the 2014 Y Front Runs. Knowing that research and more treatments need to be funded for all cancers, hoping a cure will soon be found, Pantman has chosen this year to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. He has a Justgiving page to sponsor him and keep track via his Facebook page. Since 1995 Damon has been a regular fundraiser for various charities, always keeping fit and active. This stopped in 2009 when he felt tired all the time. No other symptoms. At the young age of 44, having been diagnosed with aggressive Prostate cancer he underwent major surgery. Damon considers himself very lucky. His GP and Consultants were brilliant and it was dealt with extremely quickly. PSA blood tests since have shown levels to be as low as they can be and with a final test and Consultant’s appointment due in May he hopes to be discharged back to his GP. Y Front Run Hastings September 2013 was his first run since his operation. Over 120 men and boys ran and walked sporting their Y Fronts raising
£4,000. It was here that Pantman evolved. Damon has since returned to running and has been involved in fundraising again with fellow members of Commando Fitness UK.
Pantman’s message to all men out there: “Early detection, early diagnosis and treatment are so important, don’t leave anything to chance, any doubts see your GP. Get checked out”. For more information or to register for any of the runs taking place in Crawley, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Eastbourne, Worthing or Hastings then simply e-mail: y-front-runhastings@hotmail.co.uk #bexhillianmag
