BEXHILL to bexhill A journey by train with a nod to Annie

21st September 2013 Dear Annie,

By the time this reaches you, I will have left Bexhill for Europe. The countdown to my journey has started and there is less than a week to go – I depart on Wednesday. As I write I am still waiting for my visa for China. I will be greatly relieved to see my passport again. So many of these things I imagine you will not have been concerned with. Although I am very pleased to have access to antimalarial medicine for my time in Borneo, which could have made so much of a difference to you and your travels. Unlike you, however, I will have to carry my own luggage along the way. I have been ever mindful of what I pack – an ongoing negotiation between desire and necessity. Many multi functional and multi purpose items have been found – so much research into the abundant market of travel accessories. A hat that’s a scarf or a hair band, and trousers that zip down to shorts. All manner of things that I imagine would have been rather distasteful, abhorrent even, to Victorian England and it’s lady travellers. It is yet to be seen how much use I shall make of a universal sink plug and portable washing line. So, with bag (nearly) packed, vaccines administered and tickets booked, I am looking forward to afternoon tea in Cologne before boarding my first sleeper train, to arrive in Minsk the following morning. I will cross your path for the first time in October, when I arrive in St Petersburg. I look forward to comparing notes. With kind regards Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum through October serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated

terminal is planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project on facebook (/bexhilltobexhill) and on twitter (@bexhill2bexhill).

Coping with... HEEL PAIN Pain in the heel can have many different causes. One common cause is Plantar fasciitis. Around 1 in 10 people will get plantar fasciitis at some time in their life. It is most common in people between the ages of 40 to 60 years. It is twice as common in women as it is in men. It is also common in people who participate in sport.

HEALTH & FITNESS

the heel bone combined with inflammation make this a difficult condition to treat.

Choose shoes with cushioned heels and a good arch support... However seeking the help of a foot specialist, (a podiatrist) may help to speed recovery. Podiatrists will take a full history and look at your feet to ascertain the cause of the heel pain and will discuss various treatment options available. Evidence suggests that a combination of therapeutic interventions produces best outcomes but here are some things to try at home.

The pain is often worst when you take your first steps on getting up in the morning, or after long periods of rest where no weight is placed on your foot. Gentle exercise may ease things a little as the day goes by, but a long walk or being on your feet for a long time often makes the pain worse’. The Fascial’ tissue underneath the foot is attached to the heel at one end and fans out to the toes at the other, and just like ‘ligament’ tissue, heals quite slowly. It may take several months or more to go and is generally more difficult to treat if left to become a chronic condition. Degenerative changes to the fascia where it attaches to

Choose shoes with cushioned heels and a good arch support, avoiding very flat shoes. Use an ice pack on the area that is most uncomfortable, for 10-15 minutes. Painkillers such as paracetamol will often ease the pain, and sometimes antiinflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen are useful. (follow the dose instructions on the leaflet) Carry out some gentle exercises to stretch the fascia, Achilles and calf muscles. BEXHILL – AN ARTIST’S VIEW

Beach Huts have always been associated with the seaside and Bexhill-on-Sea has its own fair share of them to inspire and entertain. Depending on the time of year, the rows of beach huts along the local coastline have a variety on offer for the artist to sketch and paint. Distant memories are the beach huts which in high summer come with the obligatory bunting, which adds welcome colour and movement- some in the bold nautical colours that you would expect to find. In fact bright colour and activity surrounds beach huts at that time of year. It may come from brightly coloured deck chairs or picnic baskets and blankets. Capturing the fun and excitement of beach hut life in Bexhill really is a skill. However the permanent sturdy beach huts along either side of the main Bexhill beach with their weathered and more natural look are a popular muse and they draw me to paint them. They endure all that the seasons have to throw at them. Still they stand there, stoic and strong just waiting to be captured onto paper by paintbrush and paint, immortalised. In autumn they portray a more wild feeling which the elements bring along including

ART & CRAFTS

the keen blustering wind. Along the seafront towards Cooden are some fine examples to fill anyone’s sketch book. This setting is more natural as they are there year long. The tumultuous autumn tides lend themselves well to a gorgeous backdrop for the permanent beach huts. The most recent serene summer glass -like sea seems a distant memory. Capturing the dramatic mood of that onto paper is a challenge. When walking with my dog along the path by the permanent beach huts I try to reflect the mood of the sea onto paper. I try to capture the atmosphere there. As the nights draw in this adds further to the atmosphere. Swapping light blues for hues of cerulean blue, darker blues – cobalt’s and navy, paynes grey and touches of sap green. I think part of the charm of beach huts is what one associates with it, be it a magical childhood holiday filled with collecting special shells, or memories of long walks along the seafront lined with beach huts. For an artist they continue to be a rich source of inspiration.

GARDENING

GARDENING ADVICE FOR OCTOBER The Halloween displays are appearing, apples are dropping and we are experiencing an Indian Summer, a lovely time of the year. Go into any garden centre or DIY store you are bound to see the vast array of bulbs ready to be planted, but how deep? Where? Which way up? – I have featured the answers below.

Moving into Autumn there is still a lot to be done, so keep busy and your garden will certainly be a treat not a trick! Harvest Time With bumber fruit crops reported, get picking now, gently lift and twist, if it comes away easy it is ready. Check apples & pears for scab disease - black scabby blotches & cracking. Affected fruit won’t store but can be eaten now. Check main crop potatoes for damage. Hedges Don’t put those ladders away just yet, if you haven’t, up until mid October is still a good time to get those conifers tidied. After that tender new shoots may suffer frost damage, the biggest offender for turning your hedge brown. Bulb planting Planting bulbs, corms and tubers is an easy way to ensure colourful displays in your garden, in Spring before the rest of the garden has woken from its winter dormancy. Bulbs can be planted in containers or borders, and look particularly effective naturalized in grass. As a rule, most will need a well drained soil that won’t sit waterlogged in Winter which may cause them to rot. Always plant bulbs with the pointed growing tip facing

upwards. Bulb planting depths vary depending on their size and species; but as a rule of thumb, most bulbs can be planted at a depth of approximately three times their own height. Some tubers, such as Begonias are best started off indoors or in a frost free greenhouse. Lawn care This month is the last opportunity to scarify, aerate and top dress lawns. Scarification removes layers of thatch and can be done with either a spring-tine rake or a powered scarifier. Afterwards apply an autumn lawn feed; these are low in nitrogen, so discouraging lush green growth that would only succumb to cold and diseases over the winter months. Trees and shrubs Planted that plant in the wrong place? Don’t despair as October is an ideal time for moving and planting trees, shrubs and climbers, as well as for hedge planting. Bare-rooted deciduous trees and shrubs, as well as root-wrapped evergreens, become available towards the end of the month and are generally much cheaper to buy than potted plants. Happy gardening! “Ask Ian” Gardening Competition! Email Ian a gardening related question and he will choose a winner at random. He will answer the question and send the winner a gardening related prize. The winning question will feature in his following editorial, giving mention to the lucky winner. THE BIG DRAW – FUTUROPOLIS October is Big Draw month in fifteen countries, and over 200,000 people take part every year. Hundreds of new and enjoyable drawing activities connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, and those who think they can’t. Since its launch in 2000, The Big Draw has successfully supported the Campaign for Drawing’s aims by encouraging everyone to draw. Big Draw events highlight the power of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. The De La Warr Pavilion has been taking part in the Big Draw since the beginning and has won many of the awards for its event.

The annual Big Draw at the De La Warr Pavilion is always a big event. But this year it’s going to be even bigger. This year’s theme is “draw tomorrow”, so I have designed a sculptural installation called Futuropolis, the city of the future, which we are building in the auditorium for you all to come and draw on! By “installation” I mean a collection of structures (some over 2m high) representing buildings, trees, people and vehicles, all waiting to be decorated with your ideas of how such things might look in the future. The event will run for three whole days to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part. It also means that this huge collaborative artwork can really develop as everyone’s imagination gets

going. I am very excited about how it’s going to look.

Come and join us in the half term week from 29th to the 31st October... As an artist who regularly works with the De La Warr Pavilion, devising gallery interactions, I am fascinated by the general assumption that creative activities are only for children. This is most definitely not the case. I hope the Big Draw event will make that clear. This is for all age groups, so come and join us in the half term week from 29th to 31st October and take your imagination and drawing pens for a walk round Futuropolis and help us invent the future. I shall be there with a great team of friendly De La Warr volunteers as well as some young students from the Rye Studio School. We’re looking forward to seeing you all.

IF YOU HATE IT – CHANGE IT What EXACTLY is Pilates? Having asked this question of my friends, their answers ranged from ‘don’t they fly planes’ to ‘nasty eye patch wearing sailors with a parrot on their shoulder’ – neither is correct, incidentally. Since doctors are now recommending their patients consider Pilates as part of a treatment plan – it’s probably a good time to tell you all what it is, exactly. Pilates is a body strengthening series of exercises that will help improve and increase flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginners to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, a sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever, and he dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. He ultimately devised a series of exercises and training-techniques required to teach his methods properly. During World War I he was recruited to build the strength of the intern camp and he began refining and teaching his minimal equipment system of mat exercises. In about 1925, Pilates migrated from Germany to the US. On the ship to America, he met his future wife Clara. The couple founded a studio in New York and directly taught and supervised their students well into the ‘60s.Currently the Pilates method is divided into two camps—classical/authentic

HEALTH & FITNESS

#bexhillianmag

Pilates and modern Pilates. The latter has formed to meet the needs of today’s client. Both equally enjoyable – your choice however will be determined by your preference for a group class environment or a one to one mat session with a trainer.

Why is it different? Students are taught to use their “powerhouse” throughout life’s daily activities. According to Joseph Pilates, the ‘powerhouse’ or ‘core’ is the centre of the body and if strengthened, it offers a solid foundation for any movement. This power engine is a muscular network which provides control over the entire body, and is perfect for ALL AGES IN ALL CONDITIONS. Doctors now prescribe it as there is an increasing number of studies which are showing the benefits of Pilates in the rehab population, particularly after surgery or trauma, or those new to exercise. Clients themselves become hooked once they feel the difference Pilates makes to their mobility, strength and well-being – easily accomplished at the outset and progress is quickly achieved with small, controlled movements, with little or no equipment in a small and relaxed environment. The Beach Pad is offering all Bexhillian readers a free consultation (and sample Pilates session if you wish). One to one personal training is fast becoming the way forward as now more affordable and accessible than ever before.

ROCK POOLING & HOT CHOCOLATE

Orange Hot Chocolate (serves 2)

426ml milk 1 big sliver of orange zest 1 teaspoon sugar 100g dark chocolate, broken up into small pieces

A family walk along the beach at low tide with the odd rock pool thrown in can be the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors as we slip into autumn. Whether you rock pool by the Sovereign Light Café or further along by Galley Hill to do some dinosaur footprint spotting, treat yourself afterwards to a beach picnic with biscuits and a mug of hot chocolate to warm your hands. Sometimes rock pooling can be unproductive and you spot nothing so try to jolly it up by playing who can spot the most crabs or who can find the smallest/largest shell. If you have a reluctant teen or over tired little one who just won’t walk any more than play Walk and Talk which involves each member of the group answering questions such as what is the naughtiest thing you did at school? Or what was the strangest job you’ve ever had, Grandparents are brilliant at this game and my late Mum was star player who always managed to shock us and make us roar with laughter. Before you go check out when low tide is by either checking out the tide table which is widely available in local shops and cafés or via the internet. Waterproof stout footwear is essential, as the rock pool landscape can be slippery and sharp.

Heat the milk in a saucepan with the orange zest until just simmering. Add the sugar and then the chocolate and continue to watch, as you want the milk to simmer but not boil. When the chocolate and sugar have dissolved pour into your flask and serve in mugs.

Spiced Hot Chocolate (serves 2)

100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 426ml milk Pinch of dried chilli flakes 1 cardamom pod, bashed Pinch of cinnamon 1 tablespoon soft light brown sugar Put the chocolate, milk, cardamom, chilli and cinnamon in a pan and heat to just below boiling whisking all the time. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved and pour into your flask. Serve with or without all the bits in.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE TIPS

DIRECT PEOPLE TO YOUR WEBSITE It is no good having a social media presence if you do not have a website to direct people to for further information, likewise if your website is old and tired there is little need to try and drum up business through social media. How would you rate your website out of 10 and come to think of it, what would your customers rate it out of 10.

www.yourwebsite.com There are a few things to consider with your website, firstly your name; the place people will visit, this may be your company name or something relevant about your business, like “weddingdaygifts.co.uk”. Remember if I am searching for that product I may not even know your name so it is irrelevant to me at the time. This name will cost you a fee and then is yours to renew on a yearly or more basis. Then you have the place your name is located; the hosting. It is preferable to have a UK host and one that caters for content managed systems (CMS), that is a way to allow you to upload and udpate the site yourself. The hosting usually on a yearly basis paid monthly. Lastly, you have the website itself which is either a static site, e-commerce (buying online) or CMS. Mr Google loves fresh new content on a regular basis so places more

relevance these days on CMS sites, which could also drive e-commerce modules. Because the search engines regularly update the way they rank sites you should be constantly looking at keeping your site up to date otherwise you may slip out of the rankings and your competitors will happily take your place. If people land on your site from social media it is because they are looking for further information about you. So why not make sure you create a specific place for them and welcome them into the site and give them the wow factor. Maybe “we welcome our twitter friends and offer them a special 10% extra discount”. Make the site social friendly with easy access to your spaces and also easy access to sharing buttons so that they can share on your useful knowledge and information. You hear about how regularly you should be in social media and blogging and this should make you think that your website needs to be the same. If you havent looked at your site in the last six months then it could probably do with a spring clean. You really should not be frightened of your site, take an interest in it, nurture it like your own children, encourage it to grow and make an impact and you will start seeing results in your hard work. Ignore it and like your children it could work against you and be doing you or your house harm behind your back. If you would like a FREE website health check then contact Sammy on the website below.

ART & CRAFT

art & craft on the south coast

- A good shop will attract regular customers who will get to know what you sell. Once they like your work they will buy and tell their friends/family! And then a positive cycle will begin. - As with fairs find the right shop /s for you. - DON’T give up. So you made your art/craft, and you’ve considered the pricing and now you are ready to sell it. This month we ask one of our members from Starlings Art & Craft Collective, Kirsty Pine to tell us her experience of selling her products. Craft fairs and markets - Make sure the organiser really has promoted this event, including adverts, good looking flyers and social media and importantly posters BEFORE and DURING the event. This is best way to do your market research. Meet the customers talk to them about your products – ask them what they like or dislike. This is the best opportunity for you to find out if your products really will be successful or not. - The location/venue is important. The consistency of a fair or market definitely helps with sales. This is when you get repeat customers. Another fair I know of is well established and yearly. People like visiting the same place or event for the experience as well as the buying. - Find the right fair for you. DON’T give up. - Just keep trying out new venues and vary your stock. Shop Selling - A shop is a great place to sell as your stock is on display all the time. However the commision a shop takes from your sales will vary, so price your wares with this in mind. Starlings is an Art and Craft co-operative so we work to be in the shop and hence the commission is very low – other shops will be higher and you can have your stock on a sale or return basis – be careful that you check on stock levels and payments.

Internet - Selling on etsy ( and other sites like this) - This is a cheap way of selling and trying out your products. Etsy has a massive audience as does ebay so you will be attracting people you may not have found otherwise. - It does require a lot of work to get started, with good photos and descriptions. To get your first sales you have to look at other peoples work and favourite work you like. This means that your work and etsy shop will be circulated more. It is worth paying for search ads as a way to get noticed more too. The good thing about this is that you can stop your search ads at any point and therefore stop paying. If my shop is getting a bit empty and needs more stock I will stop search ads until the shop is looking more full up and better. As with all of the above you will have to be flexible in your approach. For example you may find that at some venues a certain item you make just isn’t selling. This doesn’t mean it won’t sell somewhere else, so again don’t give up and instead think about what else might sell? Or question your pricing, materials used and so on. Trust that your work will sell but it may just take time and the right place, the right customer and so on. “There is so much to learn when making and selling. I have learnt loads in the past few years and just love it.”

How to sell your home more quickly and for more money! Renovate - Restore: “The experts in Home Preparation.” Established in Bexhill, whose sole focus is to work for you, to achieve the best market price and enable your home to sell faster, by making it more desirable to a wider selection of buyers. “As little as £5000 spent on preparing a home can recoup £25000.”

How? “In the current market you must make your home stand out, in order to sell for the best price and to sell in 8-12 weeks or less.” Renovate-Restore prepares your home exterior, garden, drive and interior to create kerb appeal on the outside and the “wow” factor on the inside. Achieving a higher market price and offers made at, or very near the asking price. A home that has not been prepared will typically spend longer on the market and will sell for less as the buyer has bargaining tools. Do the maths on a typical 10–12% discount on an asking price. Can you really afford not to prepare your property using Renovate-Restore?

With over a decade of experience, Renovate-Restore work exclusively in East Sussex and Kent, but have plans to expand to London and the South East within the next 18 months. The firm is experienced in both historic and contemporary property and have extensive experience across all the skill sets required to “detail” your home. “Buyers are discerning and will not be fooled by a quick splash of emulsion and an air freshener. We seek to enhance the senses of the buyer by pleasing and stimulating their perception.” Lawns are preened, plants are pruned, hedges trimmed, drive and paths made perfect, fences fettled, gutters gleaming, pointing sorted, paintwork spruced and polished, glasswork shining and door furniture immaculate. House de-cluttered, deep cleaned, steamed, vacuumed, polished and shined. All smells banished, the decor neutralised, hard floors and worktops cleaned, stripped and repolished so deeply as to impress. Renovate and Restore work to the benefit of both Estate Agents and vendors by enabling a faster turnover of stock and achieving higher prices for the homeowner looking to sell. Even a home in good condition will benefit from the service. Our unique but logical methodology will change the way homes are sold.

Chris Dell.
