iron (not a strimmer!) it will provide a much nicer finish. Towards the end of the month if it has been particularly dry the grass may need its first cut. • Cut new borders – use a marking spray, again to provide a nice finish. • Attend to overgrown hardy evergreens, straggly hedges and wisteria. Signs of Spring We will see signs of Spring this month with bulbs • Lastly, prune roses by taking out all peeping through the soil, Violas, Primroses, Heath- dead, weak and crossing stems. Cut ers and Pansies are all available to plant and hybrid tea roses back to about 8” to an brighten a pot or border. If you didn’t manage to outward facing bud and cut floribundas plant any bulbs back in the Autumn then plant pot (those with flowers in clusters) down grown ones – no one will ever know! to 10-12”. Welcome to Februarys edition of our gardening advice column and for those of you reading it sitting in a nice warm chair thinking, go in the garden, you must be joking not in this weather, well I don’t really blame you. However their is always plenty to do and the theme for the month is good old fashioned general maintenance, the benefits come early Spring will be very satisfying.

General Maintenance

The weather will dictate the amount and type of jobs you can get done – don’t worry if you can’t get out much due to inclement weather there will be plenty of time to catch up.

• Keep removing the last of the fallen leaves especially from lawns as they will kill the grass very quickly. • If the ground isn’t frozen dig over the beds & borders incorporating organic matter. This will help to break down any clay. • Protect any plants from frost or snow with fleece or apply a dry mulch (chipped bark is good) around their roots to prevent freezing. • Tool and shed maintenance – sharpening blades on secatuers, loppers and shears and having your lawn mower serviced ready for next month. • Re edge existing lawns with an edging

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

what should I invest in? (Part 1) Which is the right investment vehicle for you to consider? Shares

If you invest directly in shares you are holding a small part of a company and will benefit financially if it is successful, through an increase in the share price or by dividends. Shares are purchased through a stockbroker or an online share dealing service and charge around £10 plus stamp duty of 0.5 per cent of your investment. However, shares listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) are free of stamp duty from 6 April 2014. Advantages • You can choose which company shares to buy • As a shareholder you usually have the opportunity to vote on some company decisions. Disadvantages • Lack of diversity - unless you hold a portfolio of shares your investment is concentrated in one company • Dealing charges can make this an expensive way to invest if you are a small investor.

Investment Funds

Funds such as unit trusts and Open-Ended Investment Companies (OEICs) are collective investments which allow investors to pool their money together to create a large fund that invests across a range of different shares and/or other assets such as bonds or property. This is run by a professional manager in line with the fund’s objectives. You buy units with minimum investments as low as £500 or £25 a month, and there are no restrictions on when you sell. Charges vary depending on the type of fund, but are typically an initial charge of up to 5 per cent with an Annual Management Charge (AMC) of up to 1.5 per cent. Advantages • Instant diversification without a large upfront investment by you

• Investment decisions are taken by an experienced financial adviser • Thousands of funds to choose from investing in equities, bonds and property as well as other types of assets. Disadvantages • Management charges can be high • The manager doesn’t always get it right.

Pension Funds

A pension fund operates exactly the same as a fund, a manager investing according to the fund’s objectives, but because it is a wrapper specifically for pension investments, there are some important tax advantages. Subject to earnings and the annual “lifetime pension allowance”, anything paid into a pension fund receives tax relief at the basic rate, effectively topping up an £80 contribution to £100. Higher-rate taxpayers receive tax relief at their highest marginal rate. Additionally, although you cannot reclaim the 10 per cent tax credit on dividends, all income and gains in the fund are tax-free. However when you come to take benefits, either as an annuity or when drawing income from a personal pension, these are subject to income tax. Advantages • Instant diversification • Tax breaks. Disadvantages • Money cannot be accessed before age 55 Next month we will look at Investment Trusts and Venture Capital Trusts as forms of investments. Need more help? bexhill - an artist’s view Exploring is something fun to do. I love finding new places to explore and my dogs share the same enthusiasm. It may go back to when I was a small child and woodlands and parks seemed so huge and exciting with the thought of endless adventures on hand.

and white. Painting trees is a popular choice for many artists – both amatuer and professional. They offer so much variety. Rarely is there a tree trunk around that hasn’t some ivy or moss or fungi attached to it. Sometimes they even grow into each other to make an interesting muse, whilst others have gnarled roots that intertwine. Trees lend themselves well to watercolour, as the paints blend and mix well. The enjoyable thing about them is that they aren’t ‘perfect’ – no two trees are the same. Starting with a fresh sheet of watercolour paper, after pencil sketching, I would lay a wash of water and add yellow ochre mixing it with a touch of olive green. Sometimes the picture turns out as intended, other times it takes a different turn – that is one of the beauties of working with nature. Getting out and about on a clear day after all the rain recently is good. However there are still many muddy puddles and St Mary’s Wood is no exception. For a small area it has it’s fair share of them to either avoid or jump in!

When you explore a new area you truly don’t know what delights you may find. I often drive past St Marys Wood ,Bexhill but have never ventured inside. The trees look welcoming and not being able to see very far has sparked my curiosity. There are lines of small and thin trees, at this time of year they are grey and light brown. If I was to paint them as they are now all standing in a row I would use light ochre and paynes grey mixed with maybe a touch of lemon yellow

I realise I am walking in the footsteps of my Dad and his dog when he was younger. As a young lad he used to walk his dog through here and enjoyed it as I am. It has changed a lot over many years mainly in the size. If you are looking for a small area to explore nature then St Mary’s Wood is a good place to start. Next month’s feature – on the hunt for spring blossom!

LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES

COMFORT FOOD... BESIDE THE SEA February is, generally, a cold bleak month winds batter our seafront and we huddle in our houses. yearning for the longer, warmer days, of being back on the beach and enjoying our lovely town. During the Winter months our cooking tends to be full of dark warming foods and creamy puddings to ‘help’ us through the darkness. Before we know it the spring will erupt and we will then be regretting those heavy meals and our expanded waistlines. There is a way that we can still enjoy these comforting winter foods and yet enjoy them without being quite so worried about our waists. One of the easiest ways is to increase the vegetables in our diet. The body takes longer to break down vegetables and so we feel fuller for longer. Many people say that children (or themselves) don’t like vegetables so a good place to start to re-educate our palates is to make simple soups using the vegetables we do enjoy and then over time add new vegetables. Soups are quick and simple to make, saute an onion and a handful of fresh herbs, add your choice of winter vegetables and a vegetable stock cube and within an hour we have a delicious soup which we can blend or leave chunky. A good place to start is with sweet tasting winter vegetables (indeed at the supermarket you can buy bags of butternut squash, carrots and turnip which make soups even easier to make) why not try carrot and corriander, butternut squash, spiced parsnip (see recipe below) or a thick and chunky vegetable soup and add barley or pasta to make it even more tasty? Once you have mastered soups then you can saute some meat or tofu and add a few spoons of your soup to make a quick and easy casserole!

Spiced Parsnip Soup • • • • • •

5 large Parsnip - peeled and chopped One large potato - peeled and chopped Large onion - chopped Few sprigs of coriander - chopped Vegetable Stock - a cube or sachet Cumin, Turmeric and Cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of each but you can add more to taste.

Saute the onions and parsley in and parsnips in olive oil and spices and turn until all of the vegetables are coated then add the vegetable stock. Ensure that the vegetables are covered with the liquid and simmer gently until all of the vegetable are soft. Taste the soup and add salt, pepper and more spices to taste. Blend the mixture (we use a stick blender at tea beside the sea as its quick and easy) adding a swirl of cream or yoghurt makes the soup a richer treat.

LIFE LOCAL FAMILY CHARITIES

HELPING OUR CHILDREN RESOLVE PAINFUL EMOTIONS We can’t protect our children from experiencing emotions – that’s what it takes to be a human being! But we can guide them, and be with them on their journey, so they’re not alone. We are all created with an ‘emotional capacity’ – a part of our brain which actually stores and processes emotions. In a sense, this part of our brain acts as an ‘emotional cup’, a place where we ‘hold’ both positive and painful emotions. Picture a young lad called Harry – like all of us, Harry’s ‘cup’ fills up with emotion as he experiences life’s events. When Harry wins his football match, he feels excited and happy, and these feelings go into his emotional cup. When a classmate makes fun of him, feelings of hurt and anger fill his cup. But just like a literal cup, Harry’s emotional cup can only hold so much emotion before it begins to overflow. If filled with positive emotions like joy, love, contentment and peace, he will tend to ‘overflow’ with positive and appropriate behaviour. And we might notice fewer physical complaints, greater ability to

concentrate, fewer outbursts of anger, and more self-control. But if his cup has been filling up with painful emotions such as hurt, anger and fear, we might see an ‘overflow’ of temper tantrums, stomach aches, an increase in whining, sibling rivalry, bad dreams etc. We need to help our children recognise and name their emotions, develop a ‘feeling vocabulary’ – once an emotion can be called by its name, it’s no longer part of that great sea of unknowns facing a growing child. Life is full of emotions, but how about our own ‘feeling vocabulary’? How well do we identify our own emotions – beyond ‘bad’, ‘mad’ or ‘fine’?

Think... and see if you can list at least thirty difficult or painful emotions eg shame, rejection, disrespect etc.

As we strengthen our understanding of and ability to identify emotions, we’ll be better equipped to appropriately deal with our own emotions, and help our children to do so too. In the next few months, we’ll look at hurt, anger and fear, and how to deal with them. Susie Marriott. Susie is a grandmother and a retired relationship trainer.

Cohabiting couples II: Protect your financial interests! Property A home is usually the largest asset a person or couple owns, and for married couples or those in a civil partnership, each person has equal rights to the property no matter who bought it, who pays the mortgage or who maintains it. For cohabiting couples it is not that straightforward. If the property is owned by one of the couple, it has to be decided whether their partner has an interest in the property – because they contribute to the mortgage, or because they pay for building work, for example. However, if these contributions are not set out in a declaration-of-trust agreement then the partner who does not own the property could find they have no rights to a share of the home if the relationship breaks down. Similarly, cohabiters buying a home together should make sure they use the right legal structure so the property passes automatically to the surviving partner in the event of death. Property-purchase contracts can be drawn up as either “joint tenancy” or “tenants in common”. Under joint tenancy, both partners own the whole property, meaning that if one person dies, the survivor carries on owning it. Tenants in common means each partner owns a specific share. Under this arrangement, the share a person has in a property can be left to whoever they choose. Cohabiters purchasing a property under tenantsin-common rules should also draw up a will to

ensure their share of the property is passed on to the person they wish. If you are buying [a property] together, it needs to be in joint tenancy if you are making an equal contribution because then the law will see it as equal [ownership]. Pensions The introduction of auto-enrolment means more workers are paying into a work place pension scheme, but unmarried couples do not have an automatic right to the pot of money if their other half dies before or after retirement. Most pension schemes “deal with married couples and not cohabiters”. If a person dies before retiring, a spouse or civil partner will be entitled to “death-in-service benefits” from the pension pot, and if the spouse has already retired then a “widow’s pension” will be paid to the survivor. An employee has to nominate who they want to benefit from their pension should they die, but it would depend on the scheme as to whether it would allow non-married couples to nominate a partner.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

are you an emotional eater? When we are feeling fed up or stressed, it’s tempting to reach for a bar of chocolate or a bag of crisps. When feeling unhappy or sad, it is so easy to turn to food make ourselves feel better. Comfort eating like this, is par for the course for so many.

3. The tendency to mindlessly eat.

Comfort eating from time to time as a pick me up, a reward, or to celebrate a joyous occasion isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But when eating is your main coping mechanism for managing difficult emotions, you get caught up in an unhealthy cycle where food is used to mask difficult emotions and the real problem is never addressed.

In order to stop emotional eating, ideally you really need to address the emotions with a professional such as a counsellor. However, there are practical things you can do, such as keeping an emotional eating diary to identify patterns, looking at other ways to manage your emotions, learning to accept your feelings—even the bad ones, plus making time for exercise, relaxation and connecting with others

This is known as “emotional eating”. The trouble is, emotional hunger cannot ever be fully satisfied with food. It may make you feel better in the short term but the emotions that triggered the impulse to eat are still there. To make matters worse, not only are the original emotions still there, but you may also feel guilty for overeating and beat yourself for not having more willpower.

4. A desire for more and more. 5. You experience hunger as a craving. 6. You feel guilt, shame or regret after.

Until next time.

We may eat for many different reasons and the origins of emotional eating often go back to our childhood. Before you can break the cycle of emotional eating, you first need to recognise the difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger.

Emotional eating is characterised by: 1. An instant overwhelming urge to eat. 2. A desire for certain foods, such as fatty or sugary snacks.

facebook changes 2015 Want the good news or the bad news? Facebook updated its news feed algorithm recently by constricting posts that it sees as “overly promotional” coming from pages that are on their social media platform. Of course there will still be paid promotional posts trickling into your news feed, Facebook needs to make some pennies!

Good News

For the general public this is good news because if you are using Facebook to keep up to date with news and to be entertained, then there will be far less promotional material clogging it up. Fab! For example: You will see more of Steve touring the world and hearing about his latest activities. You will see more about Milly, who just met her friend for a Starbucks coffee (with accompanying photo dripping with cream)

Bad News

You will see more about Milly who just met her friend for a Starbucks coffee!! (with accompanying photo dripping with cream) If you are an admin for a Facebook page then it does mean less of your posts will be seen by the people who have liked your page. Your main goal for your posts should now be (and should have always been) about QUALITY. This is something that I have been beating the drum about for a while; social media is about being social, not selling! Organic posts should not be promotional; if you want your audience to see content that isn’t organic, then you will have to pay for it!

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

2. Increase conversions on your website (you will need to add some code to your website for this) 3. Boost your post (so more people, even those who like your page will see it!) 4. Promote your page and get more targeted likes 5. Raise attendance at your events… and more!

So, as a page admin what should you do?

1. Avoid promotional posts, be entertaining, be relevant, and show yourself as an expert. 2. Use Facebook adverts, using the demographic filters available to reach a target audience. 3. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, there are other social media platforms to use.

bexhill town forum NEWS The new Bexhill Town Forum committee, after taking over late last year, has hit the ground running! In its aim to make sure that the most important topics affecting Bexhill are brought to the public’s attention, the committee set up a series of three forums to discuss local governance, ahead of the review that is expected to start later this year. The first, very successful, meeting back in November introduced the main alternatives to RDC continuing alone – these are an area committee, a town council or parish councils. On 23 January the second meeting went into further details, with lively discussion between the floor and the speakers.

On March 13 there will be a Question Time style session with a panel of experts taking questions from the floor – it will be at St. Peter’s Community Centre in Bexhill Old Town, starting at 6:30. After this series the committee will bring more key topics to the Forum and two dates have already been booked: 22 May and 25 September – both at St. Peter’s. If you would like to be kept informed of Town Forum activity and to receive minutes from meetings make sure you are on the mailing list by emailing to bexhilltownforum@gmail. com. You can also find us on Facebook as The Bexhill Town Forum. Come along; get to know your new committee and learn about all the great opportunities for our town.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Coping with... lower back pain We often hear that yoga is helpful for lower back problems. However what kind of yoga? This is where Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs comes in, a complete tried and tested yoga package. This programme was first used as a research project at York University and funded by Arthritis Research UK. Teachers from IYA UK Iyengar and the British Wheel of Yoga designed and ran specialised classes. In the trial a manual was given to the chronic (long lasting) low back pain sufferers on their first specialist yoga class. A block of 12 weekly classes were taught by highly experienced yoga teachers with additional training in, and personal practice of, the Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs Programme.

The results of the trial found it was safe and effective and were published in the “Annals of Internal Medicine.” The cost evaluation in the journal “Spine” showed the course was costeffective for the NHS, society and the workplace. A social enterprise has been created to allow more people to benefit from the programme. The class format consists of 12 seventy five minute sessions, using easy

foundational yoga poses. A yoga block, blanket and belt are used to aid effectiveness and comfort. With the Lower Backs Programme the same yoga is taught, in the same way as in the research itself. The course is designed to give students long term benefits, to bring postural improvements, mental focus, self-awareness and relaxation techniques into daily life. Participants learn simple, gentle yoga, targeting back comfort, good posture and improvement of back health, helping to re-educate and re-align the body. Poses include lying down, standing, kneeling and sitting. A book called “Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs” by Alison Trewhela and Anna Semlyen, the original teachers in the trial, accompanies the course. The book covers the course in an easy to follow way with long descriptions and photographs of all the poses. There is also a relaxation CD. All yoga course teachers have to be qualified with at least 5 years’ teaching experience, and then trained by Alison Trewhela. Participants are encouraged to practice at home at least twice a week and homework is set. The relaxation CD is an important part of the homework. This course is very helpful for anyone who has not felt confident to start an exercise programme for fear of making their back worse. After the 12 weeks many students start a regular general yoga class.

BEXHILL POLICE

A message from your local  Firstly, we’d like to introduce our new Rother Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector, Anita Turner, who is replacing Inspector James Scott. Anita comes with over 16 ½ years of policing experience. She started as a PC and has just spent the last 5 ½ years in the intelligence unit. Inspector Turner said: “I am really looking forward to the challenges that neighbourhood policing brings and I hope to ensure that serving our community remains a priority for Sussex Police.” As ever, we aim to support our residents and partners as best as we can, resource permitting, through attending a variety of events, attending meetings and of course those who have been victims of crime. We will continue to send out appeals for information or witnesses to crimes that have been committed in your area, as well as provide crime prevention advice. You help is vital in crime detection and prevention and we appreciate your involvement.

News and advice Sadly in the Bexhill area over the Christmas period, several residents have been victims of burglary. In the majority of cases these properties have been unoccupied, and so we urge residents to review their home security and ensure that homes and belongings are protected. Remember, make it look like you are at home, keep some lights on, perhaps use a timer and vary the timings, as well as draw the curtains.
