YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for january With the warm glow of Christmas truly behind us and the tree nestling on top of the compost heap, many would think it is the seemingly distant call of Spring that allows us back in to the garden. However there are still a lot of important jobs to be done this month to see our efforts out in the cold, flourish later in the year. Pruning fruit trees are a great example of this and I have detailed the basics below. Fruit tree pruning

When attempting to prune trees remember safety first, ladders, saws, loppers and secateurs all pose a much greater risk when at height.

THE AIM: is to create an open goblet shape

with a framework of four to five main branches. They will most likely not resemble the ones in the gardening magazines after you have finished, (unfortunately).

AVOID GIVING IT A HAIRCUT!

I know this is tempting but resist, this will only stimulate rapid unproductive new growth that you will become unsatisfied with and end up chopping off every year.

Gardening maintenance jobs • • • • •

Keep lawn damage limitation to a minimum by staying off, especially if it is frosty. Keep the bird table topped up with food and water. Ventilate the greenhouse on dry sunny days. Sow sweet peas under cover to get a head start. Start cutting back grasses and other perennials for Winter interest.

Too cold or wet to go out start planning for Spring it will soon be here!

Ian Ward.

www.jwardgardens.co.uk Facebook: J Ward Gardens

Apple and pear trees trained as free standing bushes are best pruned every winter to produce a good cycle of fruiting wood. Trees that are not, become less productive and congested with old and decaying wood.

PRUNING: start simply by removing any crossing, rubbing, weak, and dead or damaged wood.

Aim to take out 10 to 20% off of the overall canopy in any one winter and work around evenly. Shorten the previous year’s growth on each main branch by about a third back to a bud facing in the desired direction. Open the centre of the tree by removing larger branches at the point of origin. Pruning is not a five minute job and if it has not been done for years then spread it out over the next couple of months.

COMPANY PENSION SCHEMES Workers who believe they are too old to save in a company pension are missing out on the chance to triple their money. Automatic enrolment really is for you! Thousands of workers in their 50s and 60s have rejected the opportunity to join new company pension schemes because they think they are so close to retirement that the savings won’t make any difference. However, new pension reforms mean they could effectively get as much as a 258 per cent boost to their contributions in just a few years and take out all their money tax-free. Two years ago, firms started enrolling all workers automatically into a pension scheme. This began with the biggest firms; by 2017, all employers will have to do this. Employees don’t have to do anything to join, they can opt out. Once enrolled by your employer, your contributions are deducted from your payslip. Your employer contributes to your pension fund, too, and there is added tax relief from the Government. Some people have opted out because they believed the amount they could save would be so small it would make no difference to their retirement income, but two things have changed since people made the decision to opt out: the amount of income you can earn before paying tax; and new pension rules, which allow you to take all your money in cash. It means, in effect, that retiring workers could draw all their money out of the company pension scheme and not pay a penny of tax.

So how does it work?

A worker enrolled in an automatic company pension saves 0.8 per cent of their salary, 80p for every £100 of earnings. Their employer adds another £1. This gives a total of £1.80 on the employees’ contributions. Paying into a pension, you get back the tax you had paid on those earnings.

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

So, if you pay in 80p, the Government adds 20p to return the 20 per cent income, on a basic rate taxpayer. So your £1.80 is now £2. Also, because your money is invested, it grows with the stock market. Assuming a rate of 5 per cent a year and earning £24,000 today, an increase in contributions in 2018, a small pay rise every year and 5 per cent annual growth, at these rates, a 55-year-old could build up a sum of £14,134 by the age of 65. Of this, £5,479 would be their own money, £4,315 from their employer, £1,370 tax relief and £2,970 investment growth. Amounting to a rather nice 258 per cent increase on the amount they put in. A 60-year-old could save £5,383. That’s £2,556 from their own money, £2,181 from their employer, £639 tax relief and £631 investment growth, a 210 per cent boost. When you draw money from a pension, you can take 25 per cent tax-free, but the rest is taxed at your normal rate. But everyone gets £10,500 a year before paying tax from April 2015. The current state pension of £113.10 is worth about £5,888 a year, while the new flat-rate state pension will be worth about £155 a week when it is introduced in 2016, which makes that £8,060 a year. Meaning that even with the new state pension, you can have £2,440 a year extra income tax free. Every three years, workers who initially opted out of automatic pensions are put back into the scheme.

bexhill - an artist’s view A new year and it finds me going back to Bexhills’ Manor Gardens at a rather fresher and more stark time of year. There is often frost and mist and other wonderful delights and jewels to behold this month outside. Nature has lots on offer. Despite many plants and nature being in hibernation at this time of year if you look there will be plenty to excite a nature lover and amateur artist as myself. You may not automatically think so but as I take a winter walk there with my two dogs there is a dramatic change of scene occurring. One that is a contrast from the summer. Where once there were bright blooms now there are a few tell tale twigs – cut back and ‘hibernating’ for the winter. Once where there were many bold and bright colours on show, now the palette is a more muted one. There are of course many browns and greens, but they appear more subdued and subtle. There are probably berries to be found – which birds would feast on. Rather than the full flourish of petals the seed heads would now be the main attraction. To capture these I may use a green gold and maybe a touch of paynes gray. Mixing in a burnt umber to add to the texture of them. This photograph depicts the pond on a rather watery day. It still takes centre stage even on cold wet days like these. The three fir trees stand tall amongst the other trees – their straight horizontal branches casting

ARTSCHARITIES & CRAFTS LOCAL

a dark spiky silhouette. Ivy covers the trunks of other trees. There are various different shrubs and bushes in a range of greens.

The tall striking birch trees which have been stripped bare – with their grey trunk give a good contrast to the evergreens. If gathering my paints to capture this scene I would choose my favourite sap green – mixing it with other colours to experiment and discover new shades. What struck me was that even in the middle of winter the sound of the birds twittering could be heard loudly. It was very welcome. I can hear them so clearly on a cold crisp morning or even a drizzly afternoon. The birdsong makes me feel like I am in an oasis of nature – and looking around that is exactly how I feel.

GAMING TIPS AND REVIEWS

Have you played Telltale’s Game of Thrones? Episode 1: Iron from Ice is now available to play on PS3, PS4, Xbox360, Xbox One and PC. Disclaimer: Contains TV Spoilers A brand new Game of Thrones experience has emerged from the creators of the highly acclaimed tites: The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us; Telltale Games. The Episode begins at the red wedding, which marks a tragic turn of war (those who watch the show will be more than familiar) for the northern houses. The war between the south and the north is far from an end, however the crown is creeping slowly to victory. The story of this series is based on the experiences of House Forrester - who have not yet been featured in the TV Series - coinciding with the plot from the end of season three to somewhere unknown as of now in season four. House Forrester have been loyal bannermen to House Stark for generations, who are now deemed traiters to the crown because of the war that sparked after the unjust execution of Lord Eddard Stark, House Forrester are also bound by duties to serve the wardens of the north. The house must create an uneasy alliance with the crown in order to protect the house from imminent doom and to continue the legacy while warfare tears the remaining houses of Westeros apart. In this episode, you will play as three characters, Lord Ethan; the new lord of House Forrester after the demise of Ser Gregor Forrester, the former House Lord. Ethan has been pulled into family inheritance of house government at a young age and now faces the challenges associated with ruling the house and protecting its legacy

and people. Mira, the eldest daughter of House Forrester who was sent to Highgarden to serve as Handmaiden of Margeary Tyrell, who is due to become Queen of the seven kingdoms - a powerful ally. Mira has followed Lady Margeary to King’s Landing which is where her plot begins. Finally, the first character Gared Tuttle, who is the squire to the Lord of House Forrester but also a strong friend and ally, especially of Talia Forrester, the Secondborn daughter. After ironically being exiled to the wall for protection, Gared’s journey will be an experience of the wall and the wilderness beyond which serves as home to the wildlings and white walkers. Ramsay Snow, the only character arguably worse than the infamous King Joffrey is on his way to Ironwrath; home of House Forrester, to see that the lord of the house bends the knee to the crown and the new wardens of the north - house bolton. Mira must seek the help of powerful allies in Kings Landing to protect Ironwrath and House Forrester from harm. The crown also requires a consistent supply of Ironwood - the house’s main exported resource and a crafting speciality so Ramsey will make sure that House Forrester complies with the proposals. Ramsay being a madman with no honour, remorse, compassion, respect, sympathy or any of the redeeming features expected of an honourable lord has a few other plans of his own... We will leave the rest for you to experience...

needs behind the deeds! Looking beyond our children’s behaviour and meeting their needs. Needs met = satisfaction, contentment, being loved and cared for; closeness experienced Needs unmet = frustration, anxiety, dissatisfaction, not cared for; pain experienced

Let us think first of our physical needs: after a good night’s sleep we feel refreshed and contented, but if we have several night without sleep, it leaves us feeling edgy, irritable and frustrated. Similarly, after a good meal we feel gratified and fulfilled, but after an extended time without eating, we are likely to feel discontented and touchy. The same with our emotional needs. Picture three year old Poppy running into her father’s study proudly clutching her first finger-painting masterpiece, “Daddy, Daddy! Look what I did today!” reply: “Not now Poppy. Can’t you see I’m busy?” Possible unmet needs; attention, approval... leading to “I don’t matter – I’m not important”

LIFE LOCAL FAMILY CHARITIES

Possible painful emotions; disappointment, feeling squashed, hurt. Possible behaviour; taking it out on baby, showing off to get attention or withdrawal, to avoid feelings of rejection – stop showing Daddy things, insecurity, lack of self-confidence Bit hard on a busy dad? But supposing he had met Poppy’s need for attention and approval by saying something like “Hello Poppy. I can see you’re really excited about your picture. How about I just finish this, and in 15mins I’ll come and look at it properly, and hear all about playschool.” Reflect on a recent time when your own behaviour was unproductive or inappropriate, and remember what you were thinking and feeling at the time – which of your emotional needs were perhaps going unmet? Then try to identify a connection between your child’s unmet needs and recent behaviour. Do you remember any occasion when you focused only on your child’s deeds and missed an opportunity to meet relational needs? For example: when George was whining and complaining today, I responded with anger, raising my voice and threatening to discipline him, but he might have needed my comfort and attention instead! Think... as you interact with your children this month, pay close attention to times when they misbehave. Look at the context of the misbehaviour, especially if it’s recurring. What might they be thinking/feeling? What needs may have been unmet?

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

Cohabiting couples – Protect your financial interests! Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t the case that being a common-law spouse provides built-in protection for cohabiting couples – but there are voluntary arrangements that can provide equivalent financial rights. Recent changes to the intestacy laws, which determine who can inherit an estate if someone dies without a will, make it easier to claim more of the property of a spouse or civil partner. However, despite recommendations from the Law Commission, unmarried, cohabiting couples were not given any more rights to a partner’s estate in the event of death. According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of cohabiting couples has almost doubled since 1996 from 1.5 million to 2.9 million in 2012. It can be said that live-in partners have “almost no rights” – although many mistakenly believe that couples become “commonlaw spouses” after either two years or sometimes six years. In order to protect their own interests and ensure a partner is provided for if one dies – or if the relationship breaks up – cohabiting couples should assess each area of their finances, property and binding, to determine who owns what assets and who is entitled to what. The contracts differ slightly. A declaration of trust, sometimes known as

a deed of trust, sets out exactly what assets each partner is bringing to the relationship and what happens to the assets should they have to be divided. This contract can set out who pays certain bills and any “extra value” that one partner may have contributed, such as paying for home improvement. A cohabitation or “living together” agreement typically covers more day-to-day matters such as the way the household is run or other circumstances specific to the relationship. A declaration of trust or cohabitation agreement establishes what your property is and it is binding on execution: it cannot be changed without the consent of both parties. “A declaration of trust is usually in relation to particular property and a cohabitation agreement can include extra details about paying off debts, joint accounts and financial arrangements around children, such as who pays for school fees.” See you next month’s article.

welcome january 2015 Are you glad to see the back of the old year, or sad to see it go? The dawn of a new year always brings with it the possibility of an exciting new start. It is a time for new ideas and opportunities, not to mention resolutions and good intentions. Instead of starting that diet, joining the gym or other short term fixes, why not focus on developing greater emotional resilience and improving your outlook on life?

Here are a few tips you may find helpful: • Strive to get your life in balance. Remember that there is more to life than work. Build some relaxation in to your weekends so you can relax and recharge.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

• Take time to have fun and be fun. Learn to laugh at yourself and see the funny side of things. Try to take life “less seriously.” Smile more, after all, its proven to make you happier. • Set yourself small tasks instead of huge projects. Stop comparing yourself to others and embrace your failures as opportunities to learn. Take on new challenges such as learning to belly dance, salsa or paint. • Behave towards yourself as you would a friend you care about. Listen to your inner compassionate voice, not your inner critical voice. • Finally, nurture your friendships, and take time to give love and attention to any area of your life that you may have neglected.

Until next time.

• Make this the year to be less critical of others. Remember, they are trying to do their best and just like you, they may get it wrong sometimes. • Try to resist asking others for reassurance. Work to improve your self-esteem by believing in your own abilities by learning to trust your own judgement. • Get involved in the local community; this will really help foster a sense of belonging. Take action on something you feel strongly about and rally your friends in support. • Take regular exercise to release endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifting hormones. Walk a little more each day and start saying hello to people you meet along the way.

homecall Homecall was established in February 1985 to recruit, select and train volunteers (visitors) for a home visiting scheme that would help the substantially visually impaired maintain their independence, whilst relieving their social isolation. Home visiting is very important to contributing to community care.

• •

Support to attend clubs, societies, and social events Help to access other services, e.g. the local blind society, Social Services or Age Concern.

Through our network of volunteers here in Bexhill we offer regular visits to clients once a week, to help with a variety of tasks made difficult by sight loss. The help we give typically includes facilitating outings or assisting with correspondence. There are many ways in which visitors can help our clients to benefit from our service, but we do not offer help with personal care, cooking or housework. Most clients who are accepted for our service are registered blind or partially sighted, although registration is not always necessary to qualify for our help. These are just a few examples of how we might help our clients: • • •

Reading/writing correspondence, newsletters and books Attending appointments and the occasional shopping trips together Help with day to day financial administration

One of the most valued aspects of having a visitor is the opportunity for friendship and support on a regular basis. This helps increase independence and relieves isolation. If you would like more information about our service please contact the Scheme Manager, Maureen Daley.

My chosen sport is Archery and over the years it has helped me in many ways, from helping to correct my posture to, more recently, my rehab from a major operation. I was left with a frozen shoulder whereby I was unable to lift my left arm more than 6 inches away from my side and I couldn’t stretch the arm straight out in front of me. I had two steroid injections, neither of which helped the situation. In fact my shoulder became worse. Frustration crept in, as I was unable to do the simplest of tasks. This meant that I had to push the hospital to get me the correct help that I needed to progress, for both state of mind and my wellbeing. I was given the obligatory exercises to do at home and an appointment to return. As my arm was so painful I was unable to do all the exercises and was then recommended for hydrotherapy twice a week for three weeks. I was asked to do these new exercises on top of the water instead of underwater, and they were clearly not going to work. I then attended

the hospital gym twice a week for at least three months, where the exercises were injury and person specific. As the exercises were at hospital and led by the physiotherapy department, I decided to push myself to the limit! My drive and motivation to get back to Archery and be able to lift the bows once again, were very strong. When I first started these exercises I was almost written off as most people believed that I would never be able to use my arm again. However, three months on they were using me as an example of what I had achieved through sheer determination. I now have full use of my arm and I am able to practise and teach my favourite sport of Archery once again.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

new year social media resolutions What are your New Year Social Media Resolutions? De-clutter your newsfeeds

You don’t need to follow accounts in Twitter to keep up to date with what they have to say. Add people to Twitter lists (to read whenever you want to), then un-follow them from your main newsfeed. Ah! That feels better already doesn’t it?

Engage more

Create an Editorial Calendar

Sit down once a week / month and think about your goal. What do you want to achieve from using social media? When you know what your goal is, you can start to create posts and add them to an editorial calendar to work out what you want to say & when to say it. Much more efficient and effective than leaving it to chance that you can think of something when the time comes to post.

Don’t just post and that’s it. Engage on other peoples accounts and don’t forget to comment back when people take the time to engage on your own accounts. Keep the conversation going; build on your online relationship and gain trust.

Spread the word

Connect with more people

Tracey Bartlett

Don’t let those business cards gather dust on your desk or get mixed up with the loose change at the bottom of your bag. Connect with people you meet at networking on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a powerful tool to keep those business connections alive.

Add your social media links to your email signature and consider adding them to your email auto responder. This will help spread the word about your social media platforms and encourage new connections. Facebook: businesshelpers Twitter: _businesshelper LinkedIn: traceybartlett

Revoke & Delete Apps

Go through the apps assigned to your social media accounts and delete the ones you no longer require. Always wise to check your apps on a regular basis to check nothing has been added that you were not aware of.

Stop taking your phone to bed

I know you love your phone; it has become part of you and you are probably hooked on checking the notifications every five minutes. There is a constant temptation to check who liked and Re-tweeted your last post or the disappointment to handle when you check and there is silence. Being constantly connected is not helping you to relax and wind down for the night. Besides, there are much better things to be doing in bed!
