YOUR STORIES gardening
and runners will need regular watering. Feed all crops with a liquid fertiliser. Create a herb garden – sow Parsley and Coriander to get you going.
Once again this year the very wet Winter and early Spring combined with a decent start to the Summer has meant gardens and plants of every variety are flourishing. To keep the plants looking good, regularly dead-heading is the secret to a longer display of blooms. Remember to keep new plants well watered and hoe off the weeds, which thrive in the sunshine. The Lawn The grass has been really hard work to cut this year often needing a weekly cut at the least! However the hot dry spell has slowed things a little, keep cutting as you see fit for your garden whether once or twice a week. Feed monthly if it requires. If we do get a dry spell, leave the grass to grow a little longer this will help to keep it greener. Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers....a huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost. Hedges Privet and Lonicera Nitida will all need to be trimmed now. Cutting hard will be fine for both these hedges. Leave conifers to the end of the month and lightly trim. Trim and shape shrubs as and when they have finished flowering. Vegetable Garden Produce should still be arriving into the kitchen now, lettuce, radish and early potatoes. French
Watering Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid waste through evaporation and leaves being scorched on hot days. Use recycled water wherever possible, even better get a water butt! Mulch your borders, you can use gravel, woodchips or compost to retain moisture (and keep down weeds!) Flower Border Stake tall plants to protect from the wind and dead head to encourage new flowers. Irises can be lifted and divided now. Autumn-flowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Cut lavender for drying when in full flower. Date for your Diary • Hampton Court Flower Show 9th-14th a beautiful location and great gardens. Lots of stalls and some great ideas to take away. • Still plenty of great local gardens to visit, see ngs.org.uk Long summer days and warm light evenings make July the month when even the most reluctant gardener will enjoy spending time outside. So remember after all your had work to enjoy your garden, however large or small, if you need a hand visit my website below. Happy Gardening!

if you hate it... change it! Exercise for many people feels like a chore too far – especially if you are pregnant… BUT – there are upsides that are worth considering before the little one comes along. We asked Debi Arnold, our regular columnist on all things ‘health’ what exercise can do for you during pregnancy, you can of course contact Debi directly at The Beach Pad for more information on Pregnancy and Exercise but here is some useful ‘Arnold’ advice in the meantime; “times have changed and exercise is now encouraged during your pregnancy, even if you have never exercised before, this is probably a very good time to start, but always check with your GP first before starting an exercise programme” Private ‘one to one’ exercise is popular with pregnant women, mostly enjoying the privacy and a relaxing environment: 1. MORE energy Regular exercise will put a spring in your ‘swollen ankle’ step. By GENTLY strengthening your bones, muscles and heart you’ll cope better day by day with not only your every day life but that of one now carrying a baby with extra things to do on the list. 2. You’ll sleep like a baby When you’re carrying an extra 15 pounds (or more!) in front of you, finding a comfortable sleeping position can be a real challenge. But exercise will help you work off any excess energy and tire you enough to lull you into a more restful sleep. 3. Reduce pregnancy discomfort Overall, regular exercise stretches and strengthens your muscles, which helps your body cope better with the aches and pains
HEALTH & FITNESS
of pregnancy and birth. Stretches ease back pain, Pilates inspired movements strengthen bones and muscles EVERYWHERE, walking improves your circulation, and swimming can strengthen your abdominal muscles. 4. Prepare for childbirth The better shape you’re in, the stronger you’ll be come delivery time. Giving birth is akin to running a marathon, which requires stamina, determination, and focus. And there is no reason why you can’t train, now, for this marathon. 5. Reduce stress Having a child is a life-changing, momentous experience that can leave you feeling simultaneously ecstatic, overwhelmed, and anxious. One study found that exercise boosts levels of serotonin, a brain chemical linked to mood, putting you in better spirits. 6. Puts you in the driving seat Watching the scale inch its way up to numbers you’ve never seen before can be disheartening. Staying active helps you feel better about yourself and improves your odds of gaining a healthy amount of weight. 7. Getting your body back faster after childbirth This alone is motivation enough for many women to embark on a pregnancy exercise regimen. When you’ve maintained your strength and muscle tone all through your pregnancy, your body will have an easier time bouncing back after you give birth. You’ll also gain less surplus weight if you exercise during your pregnancy.

VINTAGE FASHION
1920s GLAMOUR – FUN AND DARING! Bexhill’s “Roaring 20s” event is taking place on 19th July, so we thought we would take a quick look at 1920s fashion this month. After the First World War, the 1920s saw an explosion of new and exciting fashion. This was largely as a result of women’s emancipation and changes in society and attitudes which led to a relaxation of morals and a desire to enjoy leisure activities as never before. The 1920s was an era of glamour, fun and daring! As women became increasingly independent so fashions became less restrictive and simpler in cut. By 1924 the ‘flapper girl’ was shocking society – smoking, drinking and dancing the night away with abandon! Girls taped up their breasts in an effort to look boyish and the waist was hidden beneath straight, loose dresses with raised hemlines reaching just below the knee. Arms were bare and legs and backs exposed and dresses were risqué, made of sheer fabrics and decorated with beading, embroidery, sequins, feathers and fringes to add to the allure. Daywear followed similar lines, with dresses decorated with tucks, seaming or bias-cut panels. Thanks to Coco Chanel the jersey suit was also popular, combining a blouse, short pleated skirt and cardigan jacket or long pullover. Sport had a huge influence on both women’s
and men’s fashion. Designer Jean Patou created sports-inspired clothing and outfits were introduced for tennis, skiing, horse riding, golf and swimming. For leisure, men would wear white trousers and a pullover influenced by tennis wear. Or golf suits, combining matching coat, vest and knickerbockers – trousers which ended about 4 inches below the knee. Clothing had to be simple and practical and new materials such as knitted fabrics, became a popular choice. Women wore loosely cut trousers at home and Chinese-printed satin pyjamas became very popular. Men’s fashion was influenced by Edward, Prince of Wales, who was widely considered to be the best-dressed man in the world. His favoured items such as red ties, fair isle sweaters, Panama hats and sleek doublebreasted suits were much copied. Loose-fitting trousers known as Oxford bags, were brought into fashion by Oxford undergraduates. These were worn by daring young men and were often ridiculed for their extreme width – up to 24 inches at the hem!

LOCAL EVENTS
Welcome to the De La Warr We still have a few tickets left for Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain 2, a family show in Pavilion’s Summer Season!
The De La Warr Pavilion always looks its best during the Summer when the sun – and the people – come out! As usual we have outdoor films and music, and are supporting some of the big events in the town by providing free entertainment on our terrace. But first, this year’s Summer exhibition is one that has a very special relationship with the Pavilion. It is an exhibition of work created by one of the leading American graphic designers of the 20th Century – Ivan Chermayeff. If that name rings a bell it is because he is the son of Serge Chermayeff, one of the original architects of the Pavilion. Ivan will present some of his personal work, as well as posters of events featuring some of the iconic logo brands that his agency created, such as Mobil Oil and Pan Am Airlines.
the auditorium on 30 and 31 July. Based on the popular book series, this is a sequel to last year’s sell out show and an essential summer holiday treat!
The Bexhill Roaring 20s day on 19 July and the Bexhill Motofest on 27 July both have free events on our terrace and our outdoor events this Summer include live music on the bandstand and Sunset Screenings of some of your favourite 1980s movies on the sea-facing wall.
The powerful series of prints by Otto Dix, (Critic’s Choice in both The Guardian and The Financial Times) remains in Gallery 2 until 27 July. In the rooftop foyer, we have the prototype of the first RIB boat - originally invented at Atlantic College in Wales in 1962 and landing on Bexhill beach on 5 July. The 5 July is also the next date for our family-friendly day of experimental art – free of charge and full of music and artist’s performances.

BEXHILLL STORIES LOCAL CHARITIES
bexhill, canada and the world The First World War Centenary: Bexhill, Canada and the World 1st July is Canada Day; a day when Canadians come together to celebrate the founding of the country in 1867. Having just celebrated Sussex Day on 16th June, Canada Day is an ideal time for us in Bexhill to reflect upon a connection that spans nearly a century. When the Canadian Training School (C.T.S) moved to Bexhill from Crowborough in March 1917, Canada was approaching its fiftieth year and was still a possession of Britain. Over the course of nearly two years the people of Bexhill formed a close bond with the Canadians. Canada Day (or Dominion Day as it was known until 1982) was a time when the two peoples came together to celebrate Canada’s achievement’s in the First World War and its membership of the British Empire. On Canada Day 1917, nearly all the Canadian soldiers based in Bexhill attended special church services to mark the occasion. The C.T.S held a service at Sackville Road Methodist Church. The Canadian Trench Warfare School celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church, Down Road. The C.T.S band, which was actually American in nationality, later played a concert in Egerton Park. The following year, a morning parade was held at St. Barnabas Church, Sea Road and in the afternoon a sports day was held at the Canadian hospital in Cooden. To mark the occasion, numerous churches across Bexhill sang ‘O Canada’ in honour of Canada and the Canadian soldiers based in the town. Canada Day and the upcoming First World War centenary serve as reference points to look externally and celebrate Bexhill’s links
Sussex and Canada have a long and rich history.
with the rest of the world. As well as the Canadians, Bexhill also hosted South African and Australian soldiers during the war. The Americans of the C.T.S band and the Russian, Dutch and French musicians of the wartime Colonnade orchestra further emphasize Bexhill’s external connections. The First World War centenary is not just about remembering the past but looking ahead to the future and building new relationships and connections between our town and the wider world. ---Dr. Luke Flanagan is a researcher and academic currently based in Bexhill. Dr. Flanagan completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh and until recently held the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. His paper entitled “Canadians in Bexhill during the First World War: A Reflection of Canadian Nationhood?” will be published in the British Journal of Canadian Studies this September.

PARENTING – affection & acceptance
ts
Did you know? Children have 10 main emotional needs. This month we are looking at ‘Affection’ and ‘Acceptance’...
Ce
NG
AL
n ice
If much of a child’s bad behaviour is caused by unmet needs, lets look at those needs, instead of just correcting their behaviour...
Affection Little children run up with their arms out wanting to be hugged – “Cuddle me!” or “Kiss me!” or “Hold me tight!” As kids grow older, it often becomes ‘uncool’ to admit one’s need for these things, but the need is there nonetheless. Parents can be tempted to reduce their expressions of affection as kids appear not to enjoy it. Resist this temptation! Continue to show affection through touch and hugs, even if they’re going through a stage where they don’t hug back.
Notice when your child experiences failure or disappointment – our need for acceptance is heightened at such times. Try to empathise rather than minimise, ignore or ridicule your child. Don’t expect everything about them to be like you – or anyone else! Find ways to show them you love them just as they are. Think – what are the areas that are most difficult for you to accept in each of your children?
Verbalise your love when excitements and disappointments come! Loving notes are great for teenagers – send an email from the office, or a card through the post. It’s never ‘uncool’ to enjoy getting mail. Think – which of your children could benefit from more affection? Have you hugged your son recently? When was the last time you told your daughter that you love her (really told her, not just parroted “love you” as you go out the door).
Acceptance The human heart cries out “Accept me as significant and unique. Love me for who I am in spite of my behaviour. Don’t equate my worth with my performance.” Try to quickly forgive your children when they offend you – don’t pout, reject or ignore them as punishment, as I did sadly! A lack of forgiveness short-circuits acceptance.
How might you communicate a little better that you love your child, even if they don’t change? Susie Marriott. Susie is a grandmother and retired relationship trainer.

Coping with... TINNITIS
STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING
during spells of hay fever, stress, or ill health such as a cold. I often feel relaxed when listening to the rain. Listening to natural sounds such as the weather and the sea or meditative music, helps me drown away the constant ringing sounds of Tinnitus.
Condition: Tinnitus, the Latin word for ‘ringing’, often described as ringing, buzzing and whooshing in one or both ears. It affects people of all ages. Cause: It may be caused by an ear infection, loss of some hearing, and even stress.
I began a course of treatment in ThermoAuricular Therapy, also known as Hopi Ear Cleansing Treatment, named after the native American Indian tribe who were one of the first people to use this type of therapy before it came over to Europe. A candle is gently placed in the outer ear, and the chimney effect of the candle when it is lit, gently massages the ear drum, restoring balance and calmness. I found the treatment relaxing, soothing, and I felt rebalanced.
Treatment: As yet there is no proven cure but I believe there is ongoing research into cause and treatment. Complementary therapies such as ‘Thermo-Auricular Therapy’ and meditation can help Tinnitus sufferers cope with the constant ringing. I was first diagnosed with Tinnitus in my early thirties. I was surprised as I had no ear damage from extreme noise such as very loud music or industrial machinery, and I had not suffered an ear injury. I remember waking up one morning with a sharp pain deep within my right ear which no sooner had it appeared, quickly disappeared. My hearing felt muffled for a day and then I had a ringing in my ears which never went away. I eventually went to see my GP and was referred to an ear specialist who diagnosed me with Tinnitus.
You can feel alone suffering with Tinnitus as it is not a condition which others can see or hear. As a result of the success of my treatment, I trained in Thermo-Auricular Therapy and can now offer the treatment to people who feel it may also work for them.
There was no proven cure, although I believe there is ongoing research into cause and treatment. The constant ringing in my ears varies in pitch and becomes magnified

BEXHILL to bexhill... arrived at Niagara Falls.
YOUR STORIES
Dear Annie
I arrived at Niagara Falls yesterday, from Toronto and have spent a lovely morning travelling further along the river, visiting Niagara on the Lake (previously Newark at the time of your visit) where you can now see the skyline of Toronto at the far side of Lake Ontario. It really is like an inland sea, with waves lapping at the shore line and an expanse of water stretching as far as the eye can see.
The view above Toronto is quite spectacular, and Toronto photographs taken from it’s highest point are now from the CN Tower, a staggering 346m from the ground and a journey of 22 km per hour in the glass bottom elevator that takes you up! It quite made my stomach summersault and despite the incredible view I was very keen to get down again. From here you can also see Lake Ontario as it stretches out towards Niagara. Seeing Niagara Falls for the first time I was walking along the riverside, where you first get sight through the Rainbow Bridge, linking Canada to the US.
Seeing the American Falls and the white water frothing at the edge of the cliffs. The immediate area now, is so built up with fairgrounds, hotels and ‘amusements’ it is quite distracting from the reason they are there at all, and sadly seems to have been given little thought with regards aesthetics or their surrounds. I have tried imaging them though as you would have seen them, and there is no detraction of their wonder or force. The immensity of the falls as they tip over the edge and plummet is incredible. Taking the tour behind the falls gives you some idea of the full force, although I suspect I was rather more protected from them that you were. There are two outlooks directly behind the Horseshoe Falls, at each one the noise is the first thing you notice and the subtle vibration in the tunnels, but watching the water is mesmerising, thick white vertical waves dancing in all directions as the light catches it. It only later occurred to me that you must have visited from the American side, the ‘Cave of the Winds’ remains in name only, now a board walk in front of them rather than a cave behind. They are still mesmerising though, and with the sun out brought a perfect rainbow. I will write again soon, kind regards Louise.
Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is
planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

bexhill – an artist’s view In Bexhill we are lucky to have many places of natural beauty for everyone including the amatuer artist to enjoy. I recently re discovered the public gardens of Bexhill Manor Barn. What immediately strikes me is the serenity and peacefulness it offers. It is so inspirational for a nature loving person. As one walks through the different areas moss can be seen covering roof tiles, ivy crawling it’s way up broken remains of walls, and the different species of trees and shrubs in abundance. I was even lucky enough to have seen a bumble bee resting on a bright orange lily.

Each new section of the gardens offers something new for this painter. The lush tranquil area by the square pond where water lilies sit has an aura of calmness. The reflection through the trees of the bright sunlight glistens on the water and the tall trees cast interesting shadows onto the lawns. The bird
At this time of year many of the flowers are in full bloom including the lavenders alongside one of the walls. The striking blues and purples that merge into one on the end of the tall thin stems are very inviting to paint - mixing violets with ultramarine and white. What a lovely subject to paint! One of my favourite areas is where there is a huge bush of delicate light pink roses growing against a stone wall. Sketching these roses with their sap green shiny leaves and elegant petals is so rewarding. It’s a skill to find the correct shade of soft light pink - mixing rose madder with Chinese white. I enjoy painting roses, although the less well known ‘dog rose’ is my favourite. Other roses can be found there in the rose garden - ranging from the deep dark red rosettes to the bright yellow blooms. As I
