gardening advice for JULY

YOUR gardening STORIES

Welcome to our monthly gardening column, where we will keep you up to date with all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great all year.

Mulch your borders, you can use gravel, woodchips or compost to retain moisture (and keep down weeds!)

With July often the hottest month of the year, regular dead-heading and efficient watering become 2 of the most important tasks to keep everything looking good.

Stake tall plants to protect from the wind and dead head to encourage new flowers. Irises can be lifted and divided now. Autumnflowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Cut lavender for drying when in full flower.

The Lawn

The year so far has been relatively dry yet the grass has still been growing well. Keep cutting as you see fit for your garden whether once or twice a week. If it is struggling a little and needs a boost give it a feed. If we do get another dry spell, leave the grass to grow a little longer this will help to keep it greener. Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers....a huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost.

Hedges

Privet, Leyland and Lawsons Cypress (Conifers), Laurel, Hawthorn and Berberis will all need to be trimmed now. Trim and shape border shrubs as and when they have finished flowering usually over the next few months.

Vegetable Garden

Produce should still be arriving into the kitchen now, lettuce, radish and early potatoes. French and runners will need regular watering. Feed all crops with a liquid fertiliser. Create a herb garden – sow Parsley and Coriander to get you going.

Date for your Diary

Hampton Court Flower Show 30th June – 5th July

A beautiful location and great gardens. Lots of stalls and some great ideas to take away. Still plenty of great local gardens to visit see www.ngs.org.uk Long summer days and warm light evenings make July the month when even the most reluctant gardener will enjoy spending time outside. So remember after all your had work to enjoy your garden, however large or small, if you need a hand get in touch. Happy gardening!

Watering

Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid waste through evaporation and leaves being scorched on hot days. Use recycled water wherever possible, even better get a water butt!

LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES

summer bbq’s in the garden

With light evenings and (hopefully) a bit of sunshine its nice to get out into the garden and cook on our BBQ’s. However, how many times do you nip to the shops and return with the same foods every time? There really is no excuse you know! We are fortunate that we still have a fine range of Local Butchers who all make their own sausages for us to enjoy there is an impressive range (some of which are award winning) why not try a different one each time? Many of them also carry a range of unusual meats from Venison and Wild Boar to Zebra and crocodile why not make it your mission to visit a local butcher weekly and try their wares! All of them also carry a large range of BBQ foods – from home made burgers, spare ribs and meat with all manner of rubs and marinades – which can be just taken home and enjoyed. Of course you can buy the meat and marinade it yourself that way you ensure that your meat tastes exactly the way you want it to. First of all select your meat and then decide your flavouring, Lamb tastes amazing when cut into cubes and marinated overnight in Olive Oil, Rosemary and Garlic. Chicken and Beef can take many

flavours from sweet Barbeque sauces, to salty soya sauce and ginger to rich tomato sauces flavoured with Basil and Oregano. Fish can be marinated – especially tuna steaks and salmon – but a lot of fish is better wrapped in tin foil with your chosen flavours and steamed until cooked. My favourite marinades are simple and easy to prepare (I never have long) Chicken rubbed with garlic, chilli, cinnamon and cumin and left in the fridge for at least an hour then cooked on skewers and served with a Mexican tomato salsa made from chopped fresh tomatoes and onions, a bunch of fresh coriander, Olive Oil, salt and pepper and don’t forget the sour cream simply yummy. Let your imagination run away with you but remember to always salt and pepper your meat and fish and try and use fresh herbs (where possible) the difference it makes to the taste of your food is impressive.

LOCAL SERVICES THAT WE USE... TOTAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT We would just like everyone to know how pleased we are with our new extension and the internal remodelling of our home. We called in Adam Huntly from Total Project Management to receive advice on what would be possible to create our ideal living accommodation, after a couple of visits Adam brought in the architect and our detailed drawings went through the planning process without a hitch. The team at Total Project Management started as planned and attended our home every day until the work was completed. We were astounded how efficient and organised everyone was right from the very first day through to completion of the decoration; all so beautifully finished in such a short space of time and to our estimated budget. We have now been left to enjoy our remodelled home and much improved property all thanks to the whole team at Total Project Management.

DOES YOUR DOG LOVE A HUG? Does your dog

LOVE A HUG?

Most of us enjoy a cuddle with our dogs, but did you know that naturally dogs don’t hug – they usually grab each other only when they are fighting! This means some dogs can be frightened by hugging or holding. Check these pics to see if YOUR dog loves a hug!

Pic 1: A happy dog will lean into the hug, and often the mouth will be open in a smile Pic 3: TOP: The leg are relaxed in this dog who DOES want a belly rub BOTTOM: This dog DOESN’T want a hug from his dad! See how his legs are up and braced, ready to push back?

Pic 2: An unhappy dog will lean AWAY, and you might see other signs like a low tail or nervous lip licking/clenched jaw.

People often think rolling over means your dog wants a belly scratch, but not always!

TIP: If you dog isn’t ‘hug happy’, NEVER force him, and seek the help of a qualified behaviourist if he reacts defensively.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

who are you connected with? Who are you connected with in Social Media? If there is one thing that has always been at the core of running a successful business, it’s networking. Reaching out to new clients, suppliers, and industry contacts is vital for any company. Now that the internet has revolutionised the way we do business, networking has moved to a whole new level. The advent of social networking means that we can now reach countless individuals all across the globe in seconds. And it only takes a trip to our social media accounts to see how many people are using these networks to connect with others. But how do you know which of these people offer valuable business insights? Who are the ones who are going to waste our precious time?

Don’t be too follow-happy We’ve all had occasions when someone has followed us on Twitter and we’ve simply followed them back no questions asked. It’s almost an automatic response… but it’s not always a good idea. To continue using Twitter as an example, there are many people who follow of people at once, and expect a follow back, they rely on it. They will then blast our newsfeeds or Direct Messages with spammy posts. Why let your news feed or Twitter feed be diluted, when it could be populated by the thoughts and advice of real professionals and real individuals? Don’t follow someone unless you are sure they will add real value to your newsfeed.

How to find the ‘cream of the crop’ So how do you know who is going to be a valuable person to follow and who isn’t? The first thing you should do before connecting with someone is to check out the individual’s or business’s profile. Have they completed it? Do they have a professional image? Do they sound genuine? Are they of genuine interest to you? Take a glance at their most recent posts as these will give you a good idea of the kind of thing they usually publish, which will put you in a good position to decide whether or not you want to follow or like them. Something I tend to do, if I am not sure, is to add them to a list for a while and watch them (You do not have to follow someone on Twitter to add them to a list)

The power of social media and keywords Don’t forget that your social media news feeds aren’t just an ever-moving list of random musings. If you connect with the right accounts the posts can be packed with useful business tips – and can be a great source of new clients or connections. Just a simple keyword search can be really helpful in locating profiles that could be your next best customer or someone you can collaborate with. So the next time you’re on Twitter or Facebook, make sure you do a little detective work before you repay the favour. And remember to think about your own keywords in your bio to allow yourself to be found by others…. You don’t have a bio? Then make that a to-do for today!

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

blended families This month, and maybe next, I thought perhaps we could think a bit about some of the special challenges when families break-up and merge with members of other families, often with different ideas of how to “do family”. Talking and listening is important in all parenting, but in this situation, the key is perhaps Communication. Communication, Communication!

be that extra attention needs to be given individually, one on one, spending uninterrupted “meaningful-to-my-child” time – perhaps going for a cup of coffee, or a bike ride, or kicking a ball around, or a picnic by the river or some activity the child would like, catching up on finding who their friends are/what they’re doing at school/ what stresses they’re under.

Children often experience the pain of aloneness when there’s loss of a parent or sibling due to divorce, separation or death. This aloneness isn’t removed just because there are more people in the house. Make a conscious effort to talk to all children involved, one by one, about missing a loved one – let them know it’s ok to be sad – express comfort for their loss.

Have you provided opportunities for each child to share their concerns about the absent parent: the new living arrangements? The new stepparent; the new siblings? Tell each child you want to hear concerns, and then follow through to make time to do so.

The response to divorce/death and remarriage will be different according to a child’s age and development and personality. Children may be very expressive about their loss, verbalising their unsettled or hostile feelings, or they may be very closed off. Their grief may also reveal itself in more subtle ways: they may show signs of regression – bed-wetting or thumb-sucking – or start dropping behind in school. Teens are most likely to demonstrate their distress through over the top acting-out behaviours, which will need disciplining with a firm message that such behaviour is not acceptable, but a huge understanding and openness on your part to convey that you are ready to help them explore the pain they feel unable to face. Seize every opportunity to express comfort “I can see how confused and upset you feel at times – and I just want you to know I care” The relationships between adults and children can be so emotionally charged that trying to identify needs may seem overwhelming. Particularly in blended families, it will be important to allow your partner to help you see beyond a child’s behaviour. Together as adults, discuss behaviour and possible needs that may be going unmet. Then decide who should work to meet these needs, and how that might take place. When siblings or step-siblings are argumentative or start ganging-up on each other, it might

Adults in a blended family may also need to mourn the pain that comes prior to blending a family – it will be important for you to identify any unresolved losses related to divorce, relationship break-up or death. Talk with your partner about your feelings, hurts and losses; grieve and receive comfort so that you will be free to respond adequately to your children – your s ensitivity to your own struggles will increase your sensitivity to your children. Don’t deny the challenges of blending two families, but focus on the new opportunities you have together.

Remember: loving your child is not a feeling, it’s an action! Susie Marriott. Susie is a grandmother and a retired relationship trainer.

PAPER TAX FORMS TO BE REPLACED WITH DIGITAL ACCOUNTS Changing over to digital could make it much easier for over 11m taxpayers and 12m companies. The Chancellor George Osborne announced the end of the paper annual tax form and he promises to bring in digital tax accounts for all individuals and small businesses.

them by linking to a bank account and arranging payments by instalments or by Direct Debit. Instead, firms will be able to provide details in ‘real time’, the Government will benefit from prompt payments from this up to date information. This change should help growing companies who will no longer have to pay a ‘one off’ big end of financial year tax demand because HMRC has calculated their payments on the previous year’s information. According to the Treasury, the switch will be completed by 2020. In early 2016, 5m small businesses and the some 10m individuals will have access to their own digital tax account (or their accountant may access it for them).

These new tax accounts unveiled in the March Budget and will be accessible at any time from a computer, smartphone or iPad. They will be perform just like an online bank account. The Treasury are selling the idea as a concept that will make it much easier for the 11m taxpayers and 12m companies who currently fill in an annual tax form to pay the right tax at the right time without filing a return. It describes the current system as complex, costly and time consuming. Many believe the digital process is more to do with transparency for the Government and Treasury. When people log on to their account, they will be able to see how their tax is calculated as HM Revenue & Customs automatically updates it with information from employers, the Department for Work and Pensions, pension providers and banks. People will be able to pay their taxes when it is most convenient to

By 2017, the first group of people with simple tax affairs will no longer have to complete an annual return. By 2020, businesses will be able to link their accounting software to their digital tax account so they can feed in information as they choose. People who currently do their tax return on paper can continue to do so if they wish, but over time this is thought to reduce in favour of digital returns.

ENTERTAINMENT YOUR STORIES LOCAL EVENTS

Speeches were given by Stewart Drew (CEO of the Pavilion), Sir Nicholas Serota (who claimed that the Pavilion “made him feel like dancing”) and Riley herself.

Friday June 12 marked a significant day in the story of the De La Warr Pavilion when we opened the gallery to show over 30 works spanning five decades of paintings by Bridget Riley. Riley, who is unquestionably one of the UK’s most significant artists joined us, along with Sir Nicholas Serota from Tate and at least 200 other figures from the national and international arts world, DLWP Patrons and Members, Bexhill and Sussex society. Riley was delighted with the exhibition and gave a rare interview on camera to the BBC which was part of a live broadcast from the terrace that night. Other accolades came from Jonathan Jones in the Guardian and Richard Cork from BBC Front Row who described the exhibition as a “perfect marriage between art and setting” and the Pavilion as “a pioneering building of lines and curves” with the curvaceous staircase proving to be the ideal introduction to the curves in Riley’s works inside the gallery.

Over 150 people enjoyed dinner in the auditorium, hosted by the DLWP Chair of the Board Julian Bird. In his introduction Julian reminded the guests that, as well as celebrating Bridget’s work, we were also launching the Pavilion’s 80 anniversary celebrations and the evening was also the start of a fundraising campaign for future works to this Grade One Listed Modernist icon. • Bridget Riley: The Curve Paintings 1961 – 2014 runs until 6 September • Talk about the exhibition with dancer and choreographer Siobhan Davies and composer Ed Hughes, Sat 11 July, £7 • Free Gallery Tour Sat 25 July, booking recommended on 01424 229111 • John Stezaker : Film Works, Gallery 2, runs until 19 July • Silvio Meier: Drawings, Objects and Paper Cuttings, Rooftop Foyer, 4 July – 30 August

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

Inheritance tax mitigation using a Lifetime trust Surviving spouse Wendy has £900,000 of assets. Husband died some years ago leaving all his assets to Wendy, and she has three children and two grandchildren. At the moment she has a simple Will leaving all to the three children equally. What do the children inherit? On her death, her estate qualifies for the transferable nil rate band uplift. So, the taxable estate will be: • £900,000 - £650,000 = £250,000 taxed at 40% = £100,000, leaving an inheritance of: • £650,000 + (£250,000 - £100,000 = £150,000) = £800,000. Wendy decides instead to gift £250,000 to the children on the expectation she will survive seven years. However, son Allan is married to a spouse who Wendy does not approve of and she is concerned that any gift would form part of a divorce settlement. Wendy is concerned that daughter Brenda is not too good with money and although she wishes to gift to her she is concerned it would be squandered. Son Charles has personal health difficulties and whilst she does want to support him she is concerned that he might spend his gift on alcohol and drugs. She is advised that gifting absolutely would potentially compromise her intentions to benefit her children. Instead, Wendy decides to set up a pilot trust and appoints the excess £250,000 into the trust (over her IHT-free death estate allowance). She identifies beneficiaries to the trust as being her three She appoints her two trusted friends as well as herself as trustees of the trust and provides a letter of wishes which simply identifies why the trust has been set up and what she would IDEALLY like

her trustees to do with trust funds – without creating a binding legal obligation on the trustees – so they are not under any obligation to act in accordance with the letter of wishes and still retain full discretionary powers. Provided she survives seven years from passing the assets into the trust then that capital will not form part of her death estate. As a lifetime discretionary trust, it is covered under the relevant property regime: • Anniversary charge – broadly, taxed at 6% on what is above the nil rate band at every 10th year anniversary of the trust. • Exit charge – broadly, if the trust fund is above the nil rate band, a proportion of the 6% tax charge will be charged when assets are taken out of the trust, depending on when during the 10 year anniversary period the exit of funds is made. • Income tax – currently income derived from investment of trust assets will be taxed at 50% above the yearly £1,000 allowance, although this can be offset against personal income tax, where a beneficiary pays no tax or is a basic rate tax payer by reclaiming against the higher trust tax rate.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Coping with... summer foot care As the weather warms up and we move from shoes into sandals people tend to become more aware of how their feet look because they are on show. As a podiatrist I often hear how much better the toes and toenails feel because they are no longer confined into a tight space, the shoe.

At this time of year foot problems tend to be hard skin (callus) cracked heels and dry skin. To improve the condition of your feet as a foot care specialist I would recommend: 1. Weekly exfoliation using a foot file before a shower/bath to remove the superficial layer of dead skin.

2. Swap your highly perfumed body wash containing harsh chemicals for ones that contain natural products or a soap substitute. 3. Use a humectant foot cream daily containing urea, clinically proven to hold water into the top layer of the skin. 4. Consult the NHS Websites for further advice www.nhs.uk/conditions/emollients/ Pages/ and www.nhs.uk/Livewell/foothealth/Pages/

5. Please note anyone who has a medical condition ie; diabetes or for the elderly with frail skin please consult a podiatrist for appropriate foot care advice first. As the summer progresses heel pain is common. Appropriate well-fitting footwear is crucial for the health of the feet all year round. Many high street sandals do not provide adequate arch support and shock absorption, and the lack of a rear foot strap will cause us to grip the sandals with our toes as a means of keeping the sandals on our feet. Constant wearing of these sandals may result in conditions such as Plantar fasciitis, achilles pain, and blisters. Podiatrists are not saying do not wear them at all but moderation is the key to happy feet.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

HOW to improve your quality of life In her book “Living Magically” psychologist, Gill Edwards, tells us how we can transform our everyday lives by awakening to the possibility that the life we have is only limited by our own vision of reality. Like Gill, I believe that endless possibilities exist and that we really can improve our quality of life.

Looking at your list, consider whether your life is just as you want it to be. Do you want it to be the same in six months’ time, or different? Or even next week – but do you love it as it is right now? For example: List 1 - Routine, Lonely, Limited, Rigid, Serious, Trapped, Sad... Could there be room for improvement? Make a second list of words in which you transform any words which feel negative, or mildly positive, into what you really want. (The new list might include some of the original words.) List 2 - Spontaneous, Intimate, Expanding, Flowing, Light-hearted, Carefree, Joyful...

Here is an exercise you might like to try.

Take time to look carefully at your second list, and repeat the words to yourself several times – out loud if possible. Try to absorb the different “energies” of the words.

How might your life be different if yours Write down seven words which sum up expressed these seven qualities? honestly how your life feels at the moment and the quality which your life expresses. Take Until next time. your time, choosing carefully those words that . truly express your life. Cross out, add others Counsellor and CBT therapist until you are satisfied with your list. www.stevecliffordcbt.com For example: Joyful, learning, laughing, Like on Facebook: understanding, dreaming, inspiring, releas- yourmentalhealthmatters ing, deciding, changing, opening, loving, sensual, dramatic, scintillating, creative, expressive, exploring, learning, building, limiting, intense, comfortable, dull, stuck, dreary, routine, aimless, repetitive, chaotic, sad, lonely, resentful, anxious, guilt-ridden, cluttered, exhausting, hopeless, helpless, frustrating, rootless, disastrous, fearful, uneasy, drifting, argumentative, serious, ambitious, succeeding, opening, touching, listening, intimate, spiritual, peaceful, transforming, aware, stimulating, exciting, challenging, blossoming… #bexhillianmag

BEXHILL - AN ARTIST’S VIEW We are so lucky to live in Bexhill to have the coast so near to us. Herbrand Walk is an area of Bexhill where it feels more remote however it can come alive with all the sports and lively activities in July. Activities such as canoeing, windsurfing and kite flying make it feel like Summer. The remoteness is an attraction which other parts of Bexhill beach may not offer. When the Summer tide goes out it seems to go on forever. Brightly coloured canoes, high spirited and skilled people, oars with two different colours each end that are literally bobbing up and down. Watching two canoes together as they appear to be battling the vigorous elements and despite rowing don’t seem to be going anywhere, other times the wind will carry them with ease along a vast expanse of ocean – especially if you get a calm Summers day. Kite flying is one of my favourites. There is something reminiscent of childhood and that makes you smile when you see a kite. Whether it’s being flown by a small child for the first time or a more experienced enthusiast – a well known song from a film always comes to mind! The bright primary colours of the kite contrast against the natural sea colours. From an artists point of view this scene offers many vibrant subjects to capture. This is a seascape that I would use either watercolours or acrylics to paint. Using light blues mixed with whites, maybe a touch of viridian hue for the green tones – that could capture the ocean with all its’ life and vibrancy. Mixing a white acrylic paint

ARTS CRAFTS YOUR&STORIES

with different greens and blues reveals new shades and colours which are a joy to use. When mixing acrylics with a palette knife half the fun is not knowing what colour will evolve! If you look at the sea – truly study it you can see the different shades and hues.

The sun can literally sparkle and dance on the waves. At this time of year I think I would focus more on the activities to be the focus of a painting rather than the sea. The energy that the different sports can bring to the scene really livens it up. The bright vivid yellow buoys floating in the calm azure blue sea would make a good focus point to a picture. Using different shades of blue, such as cerulean, indigo and maybe some violet would be perfect to capture the different tones of the water. The sea will always continue to be a popular muse for artists as it just has so much to offer. Next month – August at Broad Oak Park.
