June is here? Already? Where did that go? There’s so much to enjoy...
With Father’s Day coming up, (15th June) I’ll certainly be preparing a special day to give thanks to my Dad. To Dad’s everywhere, stepdads, carers, guardians, foster father’s, ALL, we hope you enjoy your special day! This month we would like to welcome a new author, Dr. Luke Flanagan, who writes about the Canadians in Bexhill during World War 1. A very interesting snapshot into the past about the Canadian military in Bexhill. Thank you Dr. Flanagan. A must read! Another talking point from our vintage fashion expert, Donna Gilbert, rules of dress? I had to wear my ‘Sunday Best’ to visit grandparents, special clothes they had bought! Thank you to all of our monthly authors who always send in their work on time and keep them topical and interesting for all ages. We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back, and on our website or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you. Thank you all for your continued support,

gardening advice for JUNE Welcome once again to our monthly gardening column, where we will try to keep you up to date with all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great all year. Well, what a month May was for weather; beautiful hot sun mixed with plenty of April type showers – a perfect growth recipe for any garden! Resulting in stunning early Summer displays of tulips, flowering shrubs and fruit trees, but the grass and weeds have been growing fast too. So grab your mower, hoe and hedge trimmer and let’s see what needs to be done this month. Lawn Mow, mow, mow! Regularly now – weekly if possible, as the longer it is left, the longer it will take to mow. For a green lush lawn use a high nitrogen fertiliser but if treating the lawn yourself, take extreme care and read the instructions properly to avoid burning the grass! Trees and Shrubs Prune Privet and Box and shape and trim shrubs as desired after they have finished flowering. Now is the perfect time to really cut back hard if anything has got a bit out of control. Vegetable Garden Produce should be arriving into the kitchen now, such as radish, lettuce, other salads and early potatoes. Don’t fret though if you haven’t got round to sewing seed yet as there is still time for a summer crop. Get sewing with all the family, as children love to get their hands dirty. Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes.

watering. June can be a hot, dry month so watering is crucial throughout. Try to water first thing or last thing and aim the spout/hose at the compost rather than the plant itself. Stake tall, floppy plants. Weeds and Borders June 21st is the longest day of the year, which means with added warmth and light. The weeds are growing fast along with everything else, so hoe regularly. If you use a systemic weed killer, again follow the instructions carefully. Do not use on wet or very windy days as it can easily drift onto precious plants and grass, and will kill everything it touches. Dates for Your Diary:BBC Gardeners World Live 12th-15th June. NOT ALL SUPERHEROES WEAR CAPES It doesn’t matter if it’s your own Dad or your kids’ Dad, Father’s Day is when we say thanks to our super hero whether he is the big burly rugby giant, DIY fixer or the strong silent type. Super heroes (dads) come in all shapes and sizes and not all wear capes. It’s the day when we say how much we love him for being the one who got the ball out of the tree, fixed things, added up big numbers in his head, picked you up from town/ party/airport at silly o’clock, carried you on his shoulders and unwound the Christmas lights without even blinking. Dads often don’t get thanks, stuff is just their job but when you’re scared – no matter how old you are. Who you gonna call? Man-food is what’s needed today so ask your butcher or supermarket for beef skirt it’s cheap. The cheapest and the tastiest steak you will ever eat. Secret’s out.

PENSIONS & SAVINGS UPDATE
Every month, the directors at mcphersons share some useful financial tips especially for Bexhillian readers. This month, Ainsley Gill has invited Daron Beacroft, of Mcphersons Financial Solutions, to share some information about the recent changes to pensions and savings. Chancellor George Osborne made clear that this year’s Budget was for “makers, doers and savers”, emphasising that the economic recovery was happening faster than anticipated. There were some key changes affecting both pensions and savings, and this month, we will expand on these. To download our full budget book, please visit our website www.mcphersons.co.uk. Savings The cap on Premium Bonds will be raised from £30,000 to £40,000 from June this year, increasing to £50,000 in 2015. Cash and shares ISAs will be merged to create a new single ISA from 1 July 2014 (NISAs), with the annual tax-free limit increasing to £15,000 (£4,000 for junior ISAs). Therefore, all existing ISAs will become NISAs. Under the NISA, investors will have new rights to transfer their investments from a stocks and shares to a cash account. A new Pensioner Bond, available to all over-65s from January 2015 with interest rates of 2.8 per cent for one-year bonds and four per cent for three-year bonds. Immediate Pension Changes The Chancellor announced that restrictions on pensioners’ access to their pension pots will be removed, meaning they will not have to buy an annuity. The total pension saving which can be taken as a lump sum will be increased to £30,000, while the taxable part of a pension pot taken as cash on retirement will be charged at the normal income tax rate, rather than 55 per cent. The changes cover four broad areas:
Capped Drawdown – An individual aged 55 or over can opt for a drawdown pension which means they can extract income for the relevant year. This is capped at 150% of a notional annuity rate. Flexible Drawdown – Where an individual aged 55 or over can demonstrate that they have a pension income of £12,000 (including the state pension) they can ignore the drawdown cap and take whatever they wish. Tax will be payable at the marginal rate. Trivial commutation – Previously an individual aged 60 or over , who had total pensions savings of less than £18,000 could withdraw this as a lump sum. This limit has been increased to £30,000. Small Pots – The Government has increased the amount for small individual pension pots that can be taken as a lump sum regardless of total pension wealth from £2000 to £10000.The number of pension pots that can be taken has increased from two to three. Pensions – changes to come The Government plans to bring in even greater changes from April 2015. In effect, an individual will be able to choose what they want to do with their defined contribution pension fund. Need more Help? Coping with... ulcerative colitis Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease in the large intestines. Symptoms: Diarrhoea, constipation, blood/mucus in stools, stomach cramps, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, headaches, flatulence, frequent/ sudden need to go to the toilet, depression.
me, and no longer there to make me ill. My confidence was slowly building, learning to accept this alien that had taken over my body (the Colitis!)
Diagnosis: Both men and women can develop the disease. Stool samples will be tested and you are likely to need a colonoscopy to confirm the severity. Cause: Can be genetic, but generally inconclusive. Treatment: Medication, enemas, steroids and surgery (in extreme cases). Diagnosed with the condition at 23 years old, I tried various medications to control my symptoms including a course of steroids with varying results. At 26 years old I had a ‘flare up’ resulting in losing over a stone in a matter of days. I was then signed off work to recover. Subsequently, I found Holistic Therapies. Reiki offered me relaxation like I had never experienced before. I felt elated after the treatments, negativity being drawn out of
Reflexology is a gentle treatment that could target my presenting symptoms as well as a general boost for my whole body, building up my immune system, body functions and mental and physical strength. These treatments gave me a greater understanding of my health and what I could do to heal the cause of my symptoms. Now at 30 years old I am the healthiest I have ever been, reduced anxiety, sustaining my weight, my Colitis symptoms predictable and manageable. I am optimistic about my future. I continue to have Reiki and Reflexology treatments (as well as prescribed medication) to help me manage, support and maintain the health of my body. In 2009 I became a Reiki Master and in 2012 a qualified Reflexologist. If you have a digestive condition (or any other health issue) that you are struggling to manage, cope with, or accept, I recommend that you try Holistic Therapies. There are many, try them, enjoy them and find what works for you.

OSTEOPATHY... WHAT IS IT? The practice of osteopathy has been around for 140 years, but what actually is osteopathy? Experienced osteopath, Clare Kersley, explained: “Osteopathy is a hands-on system of diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of musculoskeletal problems. It’s based on the principle that your health and well-being depend on your skeleton, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues all working properly together. As an osteopath, I take a ‘whole person’ approach. In other words, when you come to see me I’ll assess your current problem and also your structure, posture, range of movement and muscle strength and tone. I’ll ask you about your lifestyle and your medical history. This information helps me to diagnose and treat not just your symptoms but also the cause of your problem.”

“I have a range of treatment techniques available to me, from stretching and massage of soft tissues and muscles, through to manipulation, movement and articulation of the spine and other joints. I can also offer exercise and rehabilitation advice. Osteopathy is patient-centred, so your treatment will be very much tailored to you.” Clare, who qualified as an osteopath in 2001 with a 1st class honours degree, is also a sports massage therapist. She has just opened a new clinic at the Bexhill Leisure Pool, on Ravenside Retail Park, where she is offering both osteopathy and sports massage. Clare is looking forward to helping Bexhillians with their health and well-being.

a return to glamour I read a fascinating article in the June issue of Sew Today magazine recently, lamenting the fact that no-one dresses appropriately anymore, let alone beautifully! The article included an interview with Professor Przbyszewski, an associate professor of history in France, and author of ‘The Lost Art of Dress’. She blames this lack of glamour on the failure, these days, to teach home economics in schools, leaving generations of women ‘unschooled and unskilled’ in the matter of dress. It’s an interesting argument. I can remember reading an interview with fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, complaining that whilst fashion students could design, few could actually construct a garment satisfactorily. I think this lack of understanding of sewing has led us to readily accept second best. Mass produced garments are generally poorly made, but how many of us actually study a garment to see whether it is well-finished, or whether the seams are straight, or the stitching even? Before the 1960s women used to take such pride in their appearance. They had fewer clothes than we have today, but they had an outfit for every occasion, and every single one was well constructed and made to last, with beautiful decorative details. These women would never have dreamt of going to the local High Street in a tracksuit and trainers, or out for a meal in jeans. Women were even encouraged to change
VINTAGE FASHION
and retouch their hair and make-up before welcoming their husbands home from work! Comfort is no excuse for laziness in dress. If a garment fits well and is well made, it will be comfortable to wear. Sewing teaches you so much about clothes; it teaches you to recognise the quality of the cloth by its’ weight and drape; it teaches you what colours and styles suit you; it teaches you about fit and also allows you to produce a far superior garment by employing time consuming decorative techniques. Even if you don’t sew often, these skills provide you with the know-ledge to buy wisely. It is doubtful that we will ever see a return to those glamorous days of the past, but how lovely it would be to see people dress well and take pride in their appearance. Buy less, but buy wisely is the motto we should follow and perhaps we can make Bexhill the ‘glamour capital of the south coast!’ I would be very interested to hear from Bexhillian readers about their glamorous outfits of the past; how they dressed for different occasions, and the rules for dressing which they were expected to follow. If anyone has any stories to tell, please contact me via the Bexhillian magazine.

YOUR STORIES
BEXHILL to bexhill... such a lovely time in Sydney. 7th March Dear Annie
Such a lovely time I’ve had in Sydney, visiting the Botanic Gardens and the Blue Mountains. I also spent a fine morning at the Maritime Museum where there is a replica of Captain Cook’s boat and a lovely yacht built a little after the Sunbeam with equally beautiful fixtures and fittings. Also a lighthouse from Cape Bowling Green, the original of which you would have sailed past on your route along the Queensland coastline. Last Sydney Harbour Bridge night I also had the chance to join a yacht crew racing around the harbour and gained a much better view of how the Sunbeam would of first seen the city. It was great fun and we came fourth, although it was a close call between the boat ahead of us, not bad for a crew of amateurs though. It is such a vibrant and lively city with so much going on I feel I have seen only a small fraction during my stay. Although like you, I have had the opportunity to catch up with friends I have met along my journey. This has given me a lovely view of the city from those living here and the city and its harbour have by far lived up to expectations. Visiting the Blue Mountains, which I suspect are no more blue than any other mountains despite tales of eucalyptus oil, they are still an impressive expanse of what is now National Parkland. Stretching 1,542 square miles they cover an area more than twice the size of the South Downs. The Park status preserves much of the area which is laden with history. Our guide for the day was himself a descendent of one of the ‘stolen generation’ from this very area. His grandfather had been taken from his family in one of many attempts to ‘assimilate’ the indigenous people. Placed with an Irish farming family he was taken as a slave, not young enough to be put into an orphanage and not old enough to be killed. While there seems to be some progress made in re establishing land rights to the aborigines, now acknowledged as the ‘traditional caretakers’ of the land, it seems that a great deal of inequality remains and a good deal of trauma still to recover from. In many parts of the country the aboriginal tribes were completely wiped out. With those that survived this atrocity, the introduction of Europeans and their wayward ways of alcohol and sugar have been too much for some to cope with, impacting detrimentally on many communities. For others they are, despite everything, surviving and surviving well. The latest evidence shows that aborigines existed in Australia at least 70,000 years ago! I hope that the recognition of this as the oldest living culture in the world is not now too late. My journey now takes me in the same direction as the Sunbeam, travelling north through New South Wales and along the Queensland coastline. I will write again soon. with best wishes, Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is
planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

if you hate it... change it! Feeling ‘out of sorts’ or are you struggling with pain? Then Acupuncture might be the answer, to these or indeed a host of other reasons. Acupuncture is fast becoming a solution for many aspects of a person’s pain relief or health, either as a preventative measure or a treatment. Acupuncture respects that the body has an abundance of ‘energy flow’, and if this energy flow becomes blocked or there is an inadequate supply, then the body fails to maintain order and illness or disease is likely to follow.
Your energy flow can be affected by stress, physical trauma, a poor diet, the weather and the environment, illness or other lifestyle factors. Acupuncture serves to relieve or release the blockage by inserting fine sterile needles into specific sites, (acupuncture points), which stimulates and encourages the normal flow of energy through the body. The origins of acupuncture date back to China at least 2000 years making it one of the oldest and longest standing health care systems in the world – if it didn’t work – it wouldn’t sill be used today!

We spoke to Debi Arnold, our resident local well-being expert who not only provided us with the facts but also took the opportunity to introduce Lorraine McDonald, a registered acupuncturist and member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).
Lorraine further explained: “My acupuncture sessions focus on treating the whole person, offering patients a wholly positive experience by providing the highest quality of acupuncture treatment in a relaxed, welcoming and nurturing environment. If you are curious and would like to understand a little more how acupuncture can help you I am offering a FREE 15 minute consultation to clients of The Beach Pad.” Debi added, all Bexhillian Magazine readers are invited to meet with either Debi, to discuss their well-being with regard to weight, fitness, mobility, flexibility, aches and pains, or with specific acupuncture enquiries for Lorraine, who is now resident at The Beach Pad, every Wednesday.

BEXHILLL STORIES LOCAL CHARITIES
the Canadians in bexhill during WW1 The story of the Canadians in Bexhill during the First World War was, until recently, an underdeveloped aspect of the town’s history. Between 1917 and 1919, the Canadians were the major military presence in Bexhill. There were three main Canadian institutions in the town: the Canadian Training School (C.T.S), Canadian Trench Warfare School (C.T.W.S) and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Cooden Camp. The C.T.S and C.T.W.S were based at locations across the town. The main barracks of the C.T.S was the Metropole Hotel, adjacent to where the De La Warr Pavilion now stands. The main training ground was Egerton Park, with parades held down Park Avenue. The C.T.W.S laid trenches off Cooden Drive on land that is now occupied by St Augustine’s Church. Lectures were held at Whindown School, off Westdown Road (the gatehouse still remains adjacent to St Francis Chase housing estate) and Down Council School (present day King Offa School). Other locations included the cliffs below South Cliff (rifle and target practice), The Sackville Hotel, The Pelham Hotel and Bexhill Museum (all entertaining). For nearly two years the townspeople and Canadians enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. The Canadians supported local events by providing music and entertainment, while the townspeople turned out for Canadian sports days and concerts. Marriages between Canadians and local women were so numerous that Bexhill was called a ‘Matchmakers Paradise’ by the Toronto Star. By the end of the war, the townspeople had developed a strong bond with the Canadians. The Canadian Government donated four maple trees to act as a long-term memorial in the grounds of the Conservative Club in Amherst Road. These trees are no longer standing. Now, only the graves of those Canadians who tragically died while stationed in Bexhill and two road

August will mark 100 years since the beginning of the First World War. The centenary is an opportunity to delve deeper into the rich history of our town. The Canadians in Bexhill are just one part of that history. ---Dr. Luke Flanagan is a researcher and academic currently based in Bexhill.
