Lots to be involved in... Hello and welcome Bexhillian readers!
In this month’s issue, we have another delicious recipe from Tea beside the Sea’s Janet Van Den Bussche, for making scones! I’ve recently been making scones and in addition to the traditional recipe, they are really nice with marmite added! Don’t like Marmite? Oh okay strawberry jam and clotted cream it is then! We have a great article from Steve Clifford on boosting your self-confidence. This page is sure to be one to pull out and stick it to the fridge under your favourite magnet. Sometimes we all need a boost; positivity brings in good things. We also have Ian’s gardening tips and a helpful article about “Hayfever and Sensitivities”. Also take a look at the events page on our website because we have more listings and regular clubs details that are all happening in and around Bexhill. The regular clubs listed cover a wide range of activities such as wellbeing, martial arts, cycling and even drumming! We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. Don’t worry though, we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back and on our website, or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you.
Scott and Samantha.

gardening advice for MAY Hope you all had a nice Easter break. With fresh growth emerging throughout the garden as the weather warms, May is possibly the best month to get out into the garden. The riot of spring colours lifts the spirits and the fresh growth reminds us of the beauty to come. As the daylight saving takes effect; longer days mean more time to enjoy and add more life to your reawakening garden. Hopefully this may inspire and help you to get the most out of your garden.
The Lawn
The perfect lawn needs love and attention. Lawns need some help to recover from the winter and get in top shape for the coming season. The grass will be growing vigorously now and will need a cut at least fortnightly – keep those blades high at first lowering them gradually. If moss is a problem, choose a combined fertiliser and moss killer when feeding the lawn.
Trees and Shrubs
• Trim evergreen hedges to keep them neat. Evergreens such as Viburnum tinus can also still be trimmed this month. Prune spring-flowering shrubs such as Berberis, Choisya and Ribes after they have finished flowering. • Prune overcrowded or dead stems of Clematis montana once it has finished flowering – don’t worry it will take even hard pruning very well. • Late spring is a good time to coppice or pollard (cut back hard) Eucalyptus.
General Maintenance
• Apply a liquid fertiliser to spring bulbs after they have flowered, to encourage good flowering next year, and help prevent daffodil blindness. • Allow the foliage of daffodils and other springflowering bulbs to die back naturally – resist the temptation to mow over them! • Lift clumps of forget-me-not once the display wanes, and before too many seeds are released. (They can become invasive if left unchecked.)
YOUR gardening STORIES
• Annual and perennial weeds are thriving with the warmer soil, so hoe borders regularly to prevent them spreading their seeds.
The Vegetable Garden
With the soil warming up it is the perfect time to get sowing – remember the plants will need a lot of watering in the coming months so collecting rainwater is important. • Sow French beans, runner beans, squash, cucumbers and pumpkin seeds directly into prepared beds outside. • Be alert to late frosts (for which a covering of horticultural fleece should provide sufficient protection). • Earth up potatoes when the shoots are 23cm (9in) high, in order to prevent the new tubers going green.
Pest Watch
Slugs will begin to make their unwelcome appearance in May. I’ve found that a beer trap is the ideal way to reduce their presence. Simply sink a bowl or glass into the soil near to where they are doing damage, and fill the glass with beer. The slugs are irresistibly drawn to the beverage and fall into the vessel to their doom.
Dates for your diary:-
• RHS Malvern Spring Festival 7th – 10th May • Chelsea Flower Show 19th – 23rd May Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you ever need a hand get in touch! Happy gardening!

afternoon tea in the garden The many baking programmes on the TV have made baking a fashionable pursuit for everyone regardless of age and gender. Scones are something which some people really have trouble with. I think the main reason for this is that people like to knead dough for too long and scones simply do not respond well to this as over kneading causes the dough to get warm and then the finished product does not raise not taste right. The best method for scones is to pre-heat the oven to 220 (Gas 7), whisk the eggs and milk and prepare the baking sheet and cutter. Always use a wide mixing bowl to allow for easy mixing of the dough. Sift the flour and raising agents and add the butter – I always chop the butter into the flour and then quickly rub the remaining lumps into the flour lifting the flour mix high above the bowl. Add your choice of flavours: cherry and almond, sultana and vanilla, date and walnut, lemon and poppy seed, ginger and Lime, cheese and herbs or fruits – the choice is vast. If you choose a sweet flavour then the sugar and flavourings and then mix in half of the butter and egg mix as quickly as possible drawing flour from the outside in. Add more milk until the mixture starts to come together (better too wet than too dry) turn out the dough and quickly knead
until smooth – I find dividing the mixture into half ensures that you can work the dough quicker. Once the dough is smooth quickly roll the dough keeping it at least an inch thick. Cut out into shapes and cover with egg wash and bake in hot oven for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown. Best served still warm with clotted cream, home made jam and fresh fruits or onion marmalade chutney and cheese.
Scones Makes between 15 and 20 depending upon the size of cutter

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS
2015 stamp duty reforms George Osborne announced sweeping changes to stamp duty in his 2015 Budget. He claimed 98% of buyers, particularly first-time buyers and low and middle-income families would benefit financially. But now professionals in the property business believe the reforms would not benefit first-time buyers in the long run. The widely held view is, like all property taxes, these changes to stamp duty will very likely be quickly reflected in house prices. This tax saving will allow first-time buyers more money to put towards their property and with all buyers in the same situation, prices would rise accordingly. The industry thinking is the stamp duty changes will add around 1% to house prices. As stamp duty is normally paid in cash and higher property prices would add to the buyer’s mortgage, that they would pay more in interest. Some allegedly take the view that the Chancellor was trying to engineer a mini house price boom just before a general election without considering peoples’ indebtedness.
How has stamp duty changed?
Under the old “slab” system, house purchasers had to pay their relevant rate on the whole purchase price. Previously stamp duty started at 1% on sales from £125,000 to £250,000, rising to 3% on sales of up to £500,000 and 4% on homes costing up to £1m. Houses that sold for between £1m and £2m attracted 5% tax, rising to 7% for houses worth more than £2m. Under this system a family buying a house for £400,000 would have to pay 3% on the whole sum, or £12,000.
House prices are expected to rise as sellers cash in on the stamp duty savings
The new residential stamp duty will consist of “marginal” tax rates, as with income tax. There will be no tax on the first £125,000, then 2% on the cost between £125,000 and £250,000, and 5% up to £925,000. A rate of 10% will apply to the cost between that sum and £1.5m, and 12% on the value above £1.5m. Now buying a £400,000 home they would pay 2% on the portion between £125,000 and £250,000
and 5% on the remaining £150,000. This reduces their total tax bill to £10,000. Stamp duty bills will rise for purchases worth more than £937,500. This is likely to affect buyers in London and the South East most, where prices are much higher.
First-time buyers
Many typical aspiring home owners have been hit hard by the combination of stamp duty and rising house prices. People in London know this all too well, many have tried to buy in earlier years but were unable to make their budget stretch to cover the stamp duty. Such examples are common place. Many first time buyers find their dream property at the top end of their budget, but are all too often unaware of stamp duty and find themselves unable to afford this additional cost, leaving them no option but to pull out and lose their dream home. Many people who are looking at properties in more affordable areas of London are grateful for the reduction in stamp duty, but fear that if house prices rise further they will be priced out of the market. But it’s not all bad news for first-time buyers. Those already in the process of buying will save money. Typically someone buying a £175,000 house will see their stamp duty cut from £1,750 to £1,000

hot dogs Summer’s just around the corner – the most fun time of year to be outside! But it’s not such a laugh for your fur-covered friend. Even shorter coated dogs can easily overheat in the sun, because unlike us humans, they can’t sweat to cool down. So here’s some tips to help ensure your dog enjoys the hot weather as much as you do!
your feet, it’s too hot for your dogs! Either walk at the ends of the day, or invest in a good set of canine sports booties if you HAVE to go out. •S hade – take breaks in the shade to cool your dog, and make sure you take a parasol etc. to the beach for him! •S unscreen – Dogs may need sunscreen in areas where their fur is thin, such as their ears or the bridge of their nose. •R egular water – regular water breaks are a ‘must’ – dogs cool their brain by panting, so you must keep his mouth cool. Water patted in the inside of his thighs (by a big vein) will also help cool him quick. •T oo much water – hot dogs who quickly gulp lots of cold water, or dogs who play/swim in water for too long can ingest too much and risk ‘water toxicity’ – little & often moderation is the key. •S igns – Pupils dilating, gaze going vacant? Gasping panting? Disorientated, trembling or weak? Call the vet for advice!
•H ot cars – even on mild days, dogs can get heat stroke and die when left in cars, so NEVER do this! The police may even break your windows in your absence to gain access to your dog. •H ot pavements – summer pavements can get so hot they burn! If it’s too hot for

Science day at St Mary’s SCHOOL Little Common, St Mary Magdalene and Glyne Gap School visited St Mary’s School and 6th Form College in Wrestwood Road, Bexhill to enjoy the brilliant “Cool Materials Show” with the St Mary’s pupils. The show was arranged as part of Science Week and encouraged pupils to nurture a fascination with science and get to know pupils from other schools. Pupils looked on in wonder as water was sprayed from bottles, balloons exploded, electricity passed from body to body and cabbage water magically turned from purple to red to green. They waited with baited breath for pop rockets to explode, watched corn flour turning from liquid to a solid, played with plasma balls and made whistles from straws.
Pictured left is St Mary’s pupil William and his exploding rocket. In a workshop they used balloons and hairdryers, made flying fish and played with fountains and tornados. Pupils set off rockets on the playing field and were amazed by how high they went. They thought it was hilarious when St Mary’s science teacher Mrs Forester shot one of the rockets on to the school roof!
The day was a great success; the pupils had a lot of fun and learnt a lot in doing so. St Mary’s School and College (part of The Talking Trust) is a children’s charity and as such receives no grants or donations from Local Government . It receives some funding from Central Government. Parents do not normally pay fees for their child to attend St Mary’s. Local Authorities who cannot meet the needs of a child will refer that child to St Mary’s, and if, after assessment, the child would be appropriately placed the Local Authority will then pay the additional fee. These fees cover the child’s education and care. Everything else is covered by fundraising. St Mary’s caters for up to 160 children and young people, and employs over 250 staff based on the Trust sites in Bexhill. Visit: www.stmarysbexhill.org

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE
Right of Residence Trust – working case A wife (or husband) dies, and the surviving spouse (let’s call him Peter) remarries or cohabits with Anne, who is significantly younger than he is. They agree that they have to manage their financial relationship carefully. They want to ensure that Peter’s son and daughter, Rob and Jo are not disinherited, so Peter puts a provision in his will that Anne will have the right to occupy his home, The Barn (which is in his name only) for her lifetime, and after Anne’s death, the property will go automatically to Rob and Jo in equal shares. One reason for his decision is to discourage, as far as possible, a claim by Anne under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act, 1975 on Peter’s death. The will is executed, the couple live together happily for 10 years, during which there are the normal family ups and downs, and then sadly, Peter dies. Anne continues to occupy the property as planned. She decides there is no need for her to make any claim for a greater share of Peter’s estate. The years pass. Rob and Jo can only wait until Anne dies before they can benefit from the capital from the house. As they get older, they need the capital less. Their children are now grown up, and it is potential inheritance tax that starts to become an issue for Rob in particular. The house has risen in value considerably over the years and it would significantly increase the value of his estate if he were to die. Anne meets someone and moves out of The Barn to live with him. She, Rob and Jo as the trustees, have to sell The Barn. After much unpleasant correspondence involving solicitors, a compromise is reached. Then the
trustees have to invest the funds. Anne, however, then dies. Inheritance tax is paid on her life interest (out of the capital from The Barn) and Jo and Rob receive half of the net proceeds between them. Professional trustees, while not a cheap option, may prove good value by reducing the possibility of disagreements that lead to even more expense on legal fees. Including a mechanism for how one assesses “contribution” to the value of the property by the occupying spouse would also help to prevent problems, as would including in the will trust a condition of the occupation of the property by the surviving spouse that he or she will not make contributions to the value of the property without the written consent of the trustees. Equally, providing a fund from which repairs and maintenance can be paid for could help to reduce difficulties arising in that regard. Estates can be confusing when there is a second family involved. Despite putting in detailed plans, things can still go awry when a partner dies. Even if people initially get on well, deciding on the future of estates can jeopardise relationships, and experts should be called in to put in place some agreements.

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
knock, knock, who’s there? It’s ANGER!
Suppose anger answers the door – is it OK to be angry? Is it OK for your child to be angry? We’ve probably all said it, or had it said to us as a child, “Don’t you be angry with me young lady! You wipe that angry look off your face.” Let’s look at the ‘Whistling Kettle Principle’ (do you remember them?) Imagine Keith Kettle sitting on the hob – he’s full of water, and as the heat is turned up, he soon reaches boiling point. As the water begins to churn, what happens? Keith will begin to whistle and make that shrill annoying noise that whistling kettles make! We could stand in front of Keith Kettle and say “I just love to hear you whistle Keith. It’s so good to hear you actualise your feelings. Go ahead, boil and spit. Just whistle away. Get it all out – you’ll feel better!” But what’s going to happen? Keith’s going to burn out: he’ll become a charred burned-out kettle. Or we could say, “Kids are to be seen and not heard. I’m going to B&Q to buy a huge cork and stuff it in Keith’s spout. That’ll teach him to spout off and whistle, and do that in front of us! He’ll think twice before he does that again! ”We could accomplish this by expressing even stronger anger than Keith, so that Keith becomes afraid of our anger! But if we encourage Keith to simply stuff his anger, he might explode as the pressure builds up – or he may become seriously depressed – or become bitter (Bitterness is simply unresolved anger that has been repeatedly stuffed.) So if we don’t let them ‘boil over’, and we don’t try to ‘cork’ their anger, how do we teach our children to deal with their anger appropriately? We need to give them permission to be angry – not to be disrespectful or destructive, but to feel what they are feeling, and express it in words. We might have to frequently remind them that although it is OK to be angry, it is not OK to be disrespectful or destructive! We need to help them develop self-control by suggesting a cooling-off period sometimes, ie time-out.
“Aaron, I sense you may need a few moments to yourself to get control of your feelings. Let’s take a break and then get back together in 15 mins.” We need to help them identify the anger, especially younger children who don’t have the language skills – if we can’t name it, we’ll have difficulty controlling it! “Boy, you look really angry! I can tell you’re mad” “George, when you get awkward like this, I wonder if you’re needing a hug?” “Sophie, the way you are slamming things around makes me wonder if something happened at school today?” “Sammy, it seems you’re really angry at your brother for taking your action figures, and that you’re upset because he didn’t respect your privacy. But I wonder if you’re also feeling hurt because he made fun of you?” Try and help them see what might be going on. And then express care “Katie, I’m sad for you that your friends put you down – that must have hurt, especially coming from them” “Jake, I know you’re angry with me because you think your bedtime’s far too early, but it matters to me how you feel, and no promises I’ll change the time, but I will think about it, as I know you need me to respect and consider your feelings.” “Alice, I can see you’re frustrated with your homework, and angry with yourself because you feel you can’t do anything right, but can I support you in some way with all that work – how can I help?”
There’s a proverb that’s good to remember, that says “A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”
Think... This month, take a deep
breath and practice giving a gentle answer to your children’s anger!

MAY AT THE DE LA WARR PAVILION May 6th sees the 80 anniversary of the laying of the foundation plaque by Earl De La Warr in 1935 which can still be seen in the De La Warr Pavilion foyer. The speech he made that day remains an inspiration for all of us who work here.
“How better could we dedicate ourselves today than by gathering around this new venture of ours, a venture which is going to lead to the growth, prosperity and greater culture of this our town.” The Pavilion will celebrate the start of its 80th anniversary year with a major exhibition from artist Bridget Riley, opening on 12 June. Riley is arguably the most wellknown living British artist and a selection of her Curve Paintings – dating back from 1961 – will be on display in Gallery 1 until September. In the mean time, the month of May sees the close of our most successful ever exhibition – Ladybird by Design. Thousands of people have been through the doors and shared their Ladybird memories with us. If you haven’t seen it yet, you only have until 10 May. Gallery 2 opens on 2 May with John Stezaker: Film Works. John’s work comprises still, discontinuous images projected at 24 frames a second, giving the illusion of
movement. It is a mind-blowing spectacle, not to be missed. We have workshops and activities for families and children during May half term and plenty of live events to keep you entertained – Stewart Francis, Aliens Love Underpants, NTLive : Man and Superman, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a special Beethoven By The Sea concert on 4 June. They are of course synonymous with late spring and can be found in abundance at Highwoods, Bexhill in this month of May. They make a good partner with the fresh looking white wood anemone that are on display. If you take a stroll through the woods you will not be disappointed by the mass of flowers that are on show.
There is something quite comforting about knowing that each year these gorgeous purple and blue flowers will be blossoming no matter what. They are reminiscence of childhood and bring back memories. Each year they blossom without fail. Along the pathway my two dogs trot, sniffing along all the delights the woods has to offer. Hearing the birds joyfully tweeting and chirping on the branches of the oak and beech trees it is as if they are telling everyone who will listen what a wonderful view nature brings at this time of year. ! Sometimes there is a single splash of bright blue colour in amongst the woods or other times hundreds of plants to see. Although bluebells can be found in many places Highwoods is one of my favourite. One of the reasons I enjoy painting bluebells so much is so I can use all my favourite colours. This can range from cobalt violet through French ultramarine to olive green, and all the pinks and purple in between. Watercolour is my favourite medium for these flowers as I love the way the shades blend over the wash and you never quite can predict the outcome. This makes for a more natural and unique nature scene. Dipping my brush in a jar of clear water I put a wash of water over the watercolour page. The paper is now ready for the abundance of violet hues and shades of midnight green and green gold. Whether I am painting one or two clumps, and individual bluebell or – my favourite – a wider view of them in the forefront with a backdrop of tree, I am always pleased with the results. It’s as if they never let the painter down! Whether you are viewing these flowers after a downpour of rain or on a warm sunny day both provide another unique experience – this is of their scent. Nothing quite matches the delightful scent of these woodland flowers. Next month - Herbrand Walk in Summer.

LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE “Like Attracts Like” This is a belief that I have. With this in mind I have made an effort to mix with positive people, not just in my personal life, but also in my professional one. So, it should come as to no surprise, that I do this on social media too!
“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher” ~ Oprah Winfrey I use social media for many hours a day and being exposed to a high percentage of negativity gets pretty draining. Since the New Year, I have un-friended, un-followed and un-pinned from negative people, pages, groups etc that I was linked to on social media. I am now connected to the more positive, motivational and inspirational accounts. As a result of this, my social media news feeds are so much more appealing. They are more interesting and thought provoking.
SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
Exposure to the right people has the potential to develop the way we think. When was the last time that you audited you online business connections and the clients that you are you surrounding yourself with? Are they a negative or positive influence on you, and your business? What energy are you putting out? Is your negativity attracting the same back? The more we ignite our business connections with positivity, enthusiasm and passion, the bigger our network becomes, be that online through social media or offline. Positive relationships are very important in business and I want to surround myself with more of this…

Connecting and engaging on these positive posts as my Facebook page has opened up a new audience for my business. I am very grateful that some have even become clients of mine. These include Positivity Coaches; Transformational Teachers; Pilates & Yoga Instructors; Reflexologists etc. It is fantastic because I have a genuine interest in their services and I have used many of the services outside of social media. Being connected to them has made social media much more fun again!

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING
Coping with... Hay Fever and Sensitivities Has it happened to you or have you heard it said “I have never suffered with Hay Fever in my life until it started a few years ago. I used to look forward to springtime but now it’s not such a happy time of year for me.”
Kinesiology is an holistic treatment and it works with the physical, emotional and mental areas of health. It is non-invasive and quite amazing in the results it can achieve.
Or do you really enjoy a favourite food only to find that you feel sleepy and lacking in energy after you have eaten it? Have you tried endless pills and potions or had numerous tests without success? These situations often arise because of our immune system being out of balance so Kinesiology could be the answer.
Kinesiology is all about balance in our body systems and this is achieved through muscle testing and correction. Kinesiology is not a game of strength rather it is a means to check the integrity of a muscle and if it is not working properly to balance that muscle. Our bodies are very good at compensating for injuries so for example if you bang your knee which causes you to limp and it doesn’t recover in a reasonable time and you continue to limp the result may be back pain, neck pain, headaches etc.
Muscles are affected by the food we eat, the pure still water we forget to drink, the stress we are under, the air we breathe and much more and Kinesiology can help cope with all of that. It could be that a vitamin or mineral supplement is required or that a food identified as not helpful be replaced but the main aim is to bring the body back to a happy balanced state.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES
10 Steps to greater self-confidence Here at my practice in Bexhill I see lots of people who are struggling with self-confidence. Why is it that low selfconfidence is such an issue?
There can be many reasons. Often low self confidence has its roots in our early relationships; sometimes bad childhood experiences such as bullying and abuse shape the way we view ourselves. The cumulative effect of “put downs” and ridicule lead us to form a view that we are somehow less worthy than others. This view of ourselves becomes a rigid template upon which we hang our identity. Yet, so often, these, “beliefs,” are never challenged or even questioned. They are accepted as established facts, yet these so called “facts” are just “opinions”. It is time to challenge and re-shape these opinions. Here’s how: 1. The first step in improving self-confidence is to accept responsibility for change and growth. 2. Stop spending time aimlessly drifting; stop procrastinating and do things on time. Recognise your own needs: sleep, relaxation and a good diet. 3. Are you a dreamer? If so, make some goals so that your dreams can come true. 4. Take risks, share in groups, give feedback to others. Don’t be too proud to ask for help and admit you’re wrong. Don’t refuse help when it is offered.
5. S tart asserting yourself and stop saying yes when you really want to say no. Stop being a “people pleaser”. 6. Y ou are an OK person. You do not need to depend on others for a sense of importance. You are of equal worth. 7. S peak up, believe in yourself. Remember, no one can insult you or put you down unless you allow them to so. 8. B ehave towards yourself as you would a friend you care about. Listen to your inner compassionate voice not your inner critical voice. 9. L ower your expectations of yourself. No one has to be perfect. 10. R emember you are unique; you have a lot to offer, you are special and there is only one of you in the world. You are a worthwhile person.
