Flapjack treats! Flapjacks are easy to make and you can add many different fruit, seeds and nuts. They make a filling, sweet snack which are perfect for a fast and easy breakfast snack or a lunchbox treat. They take only 10 minutes to prepare and can be prepared with the assistance of your children – which usually makes them more likely to eat them!

of vitamins, oils, proteins, anti-oxidants, calcium, omega 3 and fatty acids. So as you can see a good mix of fruit, nuts and seeds within your flapjacks does rather balance out the not so healthy (but necessary) sugars. Once made and kept in a sealed container Flapjacks keep well for about a week - they wouldn’t last that long in our house!

LOCAL SERVICES THAT WE USE... OAKLEY INTERIORS Oakley Interiors fitted my kitchen this year and I am very pleased with the workmanship they provided. The attention to detail in the fitting has not gone unnoticed. Oakley Interiors were very professional and gave a very reasonable price for their product and services. YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for SEPTEMBER Welcome to our monthly garden advice page where we will bring you up to date with all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great through the seasons. August although relatively dry did provide some really great downpours that have helped the garden recover slightly, especially the lawn. There has been a noticeable temperature drop early morning and my headlights seem to be switching on earlier and earlier in the evening, this has signalled that Autumn is just around the corner. However, not all doom and gloom as there is still plenty of warmth and daylight to be enjoyed in the garden yet and that means..... We had better get busy.

General gardening: • • • •

• • • •

Evergreen hedges can still be given a late final trim before Winter Prune late Summer flowering shrubs Prune rambling roses that flower on the previous seasons growth by one third Climbing roses can be pruned once they have finished flowering; sideshoots from the main branches can be cut back to a couple of buds Prune Wisteria Do the splits! Divide herbaceous perennials Plant Spring bulbs – leave Tulips until November though Plant up containers with Hippeastrum (amaryllis) bulbs and prepared hyacinths for a Christmas display.

Maintenance

It is a really good time to get all those little jobs around the garden you have spotted from the lounger done this month – shed, fence and greenhouse repairs.

Lawns

With an extremely dry year our garden lawns are managing to come back to life slowly. Leave the grass an extra week or so to cut to allow it to green up with any rain we have and raise the blades slightly. September is a good time for laying or seeding a new lawn or making repairs. Any brown patches caused by drought will quickly green up by themselves when the rain comes and the temperatures fall – usually towards the end of the month. If we have had some decent rain you can strengthen your lawn up for Winter by applying an Autumn lawn feed which is high in potassium. Do not be tempted to use the leftover Summer feed in your shed! It is high in nitrogen and this will only result in weak, soft growth which will be prone to disease in the Autumn weather. This month is your last chance to use a selective weed killer to control perennial weeds such as daises and buttercups.

Fruit and harvesting

Go blackberry picking! If you haven’t already there are lots of great hedgerows around the main roads of Bexhill. It is a busy time in the vegetable garden – harvest main crop potatoes, beans, courgettes and tomatoes.

Date for your diary

Wisley flower show 8-13th September. Closer to home Sarah Ravens Perch Hill Farm, Brightling. September 8th & 26th. Happy gardening!

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

special thoughts FOR SINGLE PARENTS Discipline for a single parent can be at times overwhelming; having to face the challenge of avoiding the extremes of either harshness or permissiveness can be even more difficult when we have to attempt it alone. As a single parent, it may be particularly easy to fall into the trap of giving in to every demand and abandoning all boundaries. When we encounter the pain associated with divorce, death or separation, there may be the mistaken tendency not to set limits with our children. Quite apart from one’s own exhaustion and depleted emotional resources, and the strength and energy thought-through disciplining takes, one can find oneself not wanting to say “no” for fear of causing more hurt to a child. But a loving parent is one that sets clear limits, that give a child a sense of security; to try and communicate to your child “Our family is different now, but I am still the parent, and I am committed to making decisions and doing what I believe is best for you.” Loving our children for who they are means we need to communicate that love appropriately. Be careful of the traps that come with material possessions. Avoid the power struggle of competing with another parent or family in giving money or gifts. Avoid trying to buy your way into your child’s life. Seize the moments available to give what money can’t buy – verbalise your appreciation, read that bedtime story, send that loving text, remember to ask how though how that football practice went! Prepare to answer the tough questions, if you haven’t already. Help your child to understand the death, divorce or separation and cope with the results – be sure your

children know the loss was in no way their fault. Affirm them for the positive character qualities you see in their lives. This will stop any tendency to feel that if they had just been more perfect, the loss would not have occurred. Avoid blaming or criticising the missing parent. But also avoid “sugar-coating” the issue. Your children need adults who will face the truth with them, helping them realise that sometimes adults, even parents, do things that hurt them. And don’t forget to then comfort them for that hurt.

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

SUMMER 2015 BUDGET UPDATE In July, the Chancellor delivered the first Conservative Budget for almost 20 years. Here is a summary:

Business, enterprise and employment

Further cuts were confirmed in corporation tax – which is set to be reduced to 19 per cent in 2017 and 18 per cent in 2020. There will, however, also be significant changes to dividend taxation from April next year, which will impact many owner-managed businesses, and the effective tax rates on extracting profits.

than £150,000 – tapering away to £10,000, down from £40,000. There was bad news for those who rely on tax credits with working-age benefits being frozen for four years, although statutory benefits such as maternity leave will not be affected by this. Child tax credits will only support the first two children from April 2017.

A National Living Wage, applying to over-25s will start at £7.20 next April, rising to £9 by 2020. However, public sector workers pay will be capped at one per cent a year for the next four years. The annual investment allowance will rise to a permanent level of £200,000 a year from 1 January 2016 – a big help for small and medium-sized businesses. Local councils and elected mayors would be handed new powers to set trading hours on Sundays.

Other radical changes to the welfare system will see the benefits cap reduced to £20,000 (or £23,000 in London) and no automatic entitlement to housing benefit for those aged 18-21.

Fuel duty will remain frozen until the end of the year. There will, however, be a new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) tax for new cars. The levy will apply in three bands (zero emission, standard and premium) and is set to be introduced in 2017. Mr Osborne said the change was designed to make the car tax system considerably fairer, arguing that the current arrangements penalise those who can’t afford new cars.

Education

Motoring

Personal Tax

The Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold will be increased. This will allow £1million to be passed on tax-free and “end the levy on family homes.” Elsewhere, mortgage interest tax relief is to be limited on buy-to-let, which Mr Osborne hopes will “level the playing field” in the property market. The Chancellor said the Government would also press ahead with election pledges to increase the tax-free personal allowance to £11,000 from next year. While the threshold for the higher rate of income tax is also set to increase to £43,000.

Pensions, Savings and Benefits

The Chancellor told the Commons that he would consult on creating ISA-style pensions, where people would lose the tax relief when they pay in, but would be able to withdraw their money tax-free. He revealed plans to reduce the lifetime allowance for pension contributions to £1million (down from £1.25million) from April 2016. The annual allowance for pension inputs will also be reduced for those earning more

Health

Extra funds will be pumped into the health service to help meet the needs of a rapidly ageing population. The Chancellor confirmed that it would receive £8billion on top of the extra £2billion provided earlier this year or £10billion a year more by 2020. Mr Osborne revealed that student maintenance grants would be scrapped from 2016-17. They will be replaced by a series of loans, which people will start to pay once they are earning more than £21,000 a year.

Tax evasion, avoidance and aggressive tax planning

An extra £750million will be set aside for HMRC to claw back money and serial offenders will be named and shamed. Far tougher rules for non-doms were also confirmed. Mr Osborne has refused to scrap the non-domicile status outright, but the new regime will mean that from 2017, non-doms who’ve spent 15 of the last 20 years in the UK will pay the same tax as everyone else.

5 tips for using #hasHtags #Hashtags in socal media What is a hashtag? A hashtag is made up of a word or phrase prefixed with the hash symbol (#) there are no spaces between any words. They are popular on social networking platforms such as Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter etc, although LinkedIn stopped using them from 2013. By placing a #hashtag before the word or phrase it makes it possible to group messages, allowing people to search for the #hashtag and get the whole set of messages or images. When I watch The Voice or XFactor on the television, I am just as interested in their #TheVoice #XFactor twitter updates. It can be quite funny. Even the more mundane programmes that I watch become a lot more humorous when you read their unique #hashtags at the same time. Some people have a wicked sense of humour! I use #BusinessHelperTip If you use the Twitter search tool with this hashtag, you will find lots of useful social media tips. Please feel free to RT (Re-tweet) them!

Don’t put people off by using several #hashtags in one status update; it’s annoying and hard to read 5. Research your proposed #hashtag before using. BEXHILL - AN ARTIST’S VIEW There really is so much to see, enjoy , paint and draw in Bexhill that I hope some of you will continue to be inspired by all that nature and Bexhill has to offer. There are the parks, the beaches, the buildings all out there to be discovered. There are many memorials around the area – such as the small area around Barrack Hall. This is where a wall surrounds many large trees and headstones from armed forces. This would make for an atmospheric painting, maybe adding a little mist for extra eeriness. I particularly like the memorial by the bottom of Sea Road on the promenade where a wreath is being held aloft. Tricky to capture but a good challenge. The remoteness of Glyne Gap – the beach with it’s beautiful rock formations and colourful cliffs and the green area where the trees have literally been shaped by the fierce wind that can blow across from the sea. Often rabbits can be seen there scuttling into their little burrows, escaping the howling winds. If you are lucky you can just catch their little white tails as they bob underground. The stunning cliffs would make for a gorgeous painting – using yellows, ochre’s and maybe a burnt sienna watercolour – set against the greys and whites of the pebbles. Flowers beds that are planted and changed regularly provide a colourful and lively subject. In September outside the Bexhill bowls club I still hope the display there is in full bloom. Many times I have walked past with my dog and stopped a while to admire the pure brilliant blue of the cornflower contrasting against the red and orange poppies. I have often captured the cornflowers in shades of cerulean blue mixed with Prussian blue. What I marvel at is the skill of the bees that gather there. I could watch for ages as they fly gracefully from bloom to bloom collecting their precious pollen. I would like to capture one day the golden plumes set next to the dark black of the very important bee. I mustn’t forget the often talked about Manor Barn and gardens. The ruined stoned walls with the various plants either surrounding it or climbing over can make for an exceptionally striking picture.

ARTS CRAFTS YOUR&STORIES

The beautifully scented rose gardens there still remain one of my favourites. Whether it be to sit, to contemplate of to sketch. So inspirational. This time of year although we don’t like to admit it days are starting to get shorter – BUT don’t let that put you off going outside and discovering an artists view of Bexhill. Take time to really look at flowers, the different shades of the vibrant colours that nature provides. Take a moment to gaze at the sunset – try the view with the De La Warr Pavillion in the foreground or background. The stark white of the building looks distinguished against the reds and oranges of the evening sky. Stand for a while and take in the history of the building your standing in front of. Even hug one of the stunning old trees we have here – I dare you! Bexhill is a beautiful place – enjoy it!

September is a time of change. A time of change for nature and for me. I have enjoyed writing these articles very much but currently it is now time for me to take a break. I hope you have enjoyed reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

agricultural business succession planning Handing over a business can be fraught with hardto-grasp legal intricacies and tax implications. So it is perhaps unsurprising that many prefer to stick their heads in the sand rather than attempt to get to grips with the basics of succession planning. But the consequences of this can be catastrophic both from a business and personal perspective. Although less than half of farmers interviewed by Farmers Weekly had created a succession plan, nearly 80% did have wills in place. This indicates that most want to pass on the business and assets to the right person, but have not necessarily tied those wishes into their succession and tax planning. It is essential that your succession plan, wills, pensions and investments work together to achieve the required outcome, and that your family are involved in that decision-making process from the outset.

The consequences of getting it wrong

Deciding who will own the farm and who is the best person to manage it are two very different issues – it isn’t always the same person. A sharp increase in family farm litigation in recent years highlights the importance of inclusive and watertight succession planning. Formal partnership agreements and contracts are very useful, but rare – only 40% of respondents to the Farmers Weekly survey had a partnership agreement in place. Common arrangements include youngsters working on the farm for minimal pay, on the under-

standing they will inherit the farm, which may not happen due to a conflicting will or the lack of a will. Do something now, like allocating shares in the company or partnership – don’t wait until someone dies, as the result is often acrimonious and disastrously expensive. Creating the right business structure around different farm enterprises or diversifications can make succession and tax planning simpler. You need to look at the viability of a business after death; don’t leave problems for your children to inherit. Under intestacy rules, the spouse typically receives a large proportion of the estate, with the balance split between offspring – potentially creating considerable tax liabilities and uncertainty. Even a will isn’t set in stone – it must be revisited regularly as it will be voided upon marriage and divorce, and can be contested after death if it doesn’t reflect your wishes or those of the family. The worst litigation of all is between family members, so be open, transparent and pro-active or you could dissipate the entire value of the estate in legal costs alone.

in search of happiness... Is the search for happiness stressing you out? In Britain alone over £80 million is channelled into the self-help market as people look for the perfect job, perfect home, perfect partner, etc. The search for happiness seems to be a quest that eludes many people, judging by the numbers of people tapping “happiness” into Google. I did so, researching this article, and retrieved 346,000,000 hits in 0.32 seconds. The reality is, our desire to feel happy all the time is a futile one. It’s an impossible dream. Anxiety and despair are normal human reactions, just as stress and worry help us to actively problem solve*. One of the main reasons why we can easily dip into negative states is that our minds are hard wired to focus on threat, danger and negative experiences. For our ancestors, this helped keep them stay alive, providing an evolutionary advantage in the face of danger. Yes, affirmations can be really helpful, as can keeping a gratitude diary or even having therapy; however, allowing ourselves to experience the full range of emotions with acceptance and learning to live with the emotional ups and downs is the way to real contentment. Working through these negative states and coming out the other side is what makes us feel better.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Coping with... stress through photography At the last count, the photo sharing website Flickr had over six billion photographs. We are awash with imagery everywhere we look and the ability to take a photograph has never been easier. Photography has been democratised, it is accessible to everyone, anytime to create and share, but in

doing so, have we lost sight of one of photography’s fundamental benefits; to combat stress? It has long been acknowledged that the act of artistic creativity can mitigate the effects of stress and depression. Well, photography is not just about documenting the present; it is also an artistic creative activity. I write from personal experience. Photography has helped keep me grounded during some dramatic life changing events. It shifts my attention from the internal mental hamster wheel of distractions that can feed stress. I find myself more centred and calm. The act of creating a photograph can be more than simply pressing a shutter. It requires forethought, observation, an appre-

ciation of light, shade, and patience. Photography for me is also a technical challenge. Understanding the measuring units of light, (f stops, shutter speed), keeps my brain active. (Of course, if you prefer modern cameras will do this for you, so you can concentrate on the scene). Living in Bexhill, I recommend going to the beach at low tide, to watch the clouds and sunset. It will take your mind off the stressors of the day, and you could see something glorious. If you don’t manage to capture a sunset, never mind; the good news is that there will be another one. Finally, don’t worry about whether or not your camera is good enough. To quote Ansel Adams, (whose iconic images helped to establish photography as a fine art form), “the most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it”.

LOCAL NEWS LOCAL CHARITIES

Shaping Bexhill’s Future There is so much happening in Bexhill that it can seem hard to keep up – but the Forum is continuing to keep our residents as well informed as we can. The next Forum event on 2nd October will be the first of two looking into some of the major plans that are getting under way: housing, north access road, town centre strategy, East Parade – all part of the regeneration of Bexhill.

In November a second evening is planned when we will learn more about local plans for the town, and how the housing and road plans will be accommodated and made to benefit us all. We hope also that there will be an update on the high speed rail proposal by then, since transport in and out of Bexhill is very important as a support for our economic growth.

We will start with presentations by representatives of Bovis Homes who are the biggest of house builders planning to come here, and Seachange who are proposing the north access road. There will also be a presentation by a local environmentalist who will tell us something of the wonderful natural heritage of our area and what will be done to protect it as changes are introduced.

We all have our views on how we hope to see Bexhill shaping up for the future – come and share yours.

Whether you are in favour of or opposed to these plans, this will be a great opportunity to hear from those in the know, put your questions to them and express your opinions.

Friday 2 October 6:30pm refreshments and informal chat for 7:00pm formal start, to be held at St Peter’s Community Centre. Tuesday 3 November 6:30pm refreshments and informal chat for 7:00pm formal start at, to be held at St John’s, Victoria Road.
