To find value in the useless.
The Tullekat project consists of;
This project explores the possibilites of an object that is no longer of value, and how the object’s original form and characteristics can be disrupted to contradict a logic and to create the absurd. The result will be an object of my twisted perspective.
a printed publication (p.004-007),
By exploring with the Surrealist technique of juxtapositioning, contrasting materials and its various qualities were used to contradict each other, thus resulting in a new and absurd twisted version of the tingkat. After a closer look into the parts that make up a tingkat and its various characteristics, I can pick up and play with the contrast of metal and fabric. While retaining the familiar form of the tingkat, I focused on the change of material. The making of Tullekat consists mainly of the metal wires as structural frames holding the main delicate fabric material upright.

From Code to Thing. Formed with a series of coordinates, Saomi is born! This project involves the input of coordinates, by editing a sample code via p5js and using the object generated to eventually form a physical output. Through playing in the code with different coordinates to form many random shapes allowed Naomi and Samantha to understand the code and how it works. Once understanding the code, they wanted to have a shape in mind, making the sculpting of the object more refined. As romantic as they are, a heart came to mind. The process of creating a shape in code and eventually exporting it to a physical outcome is definitely challenging but the process helped improve the understanding of the virtual and physical space, as well as improving the application of software skills and making skills. This short publication documents the process of creating the Saomi, from computing in code to production of the physical output, by Naomi and Samantha.

This project aims to further our understanding on visual math. We were tasked to create a new form, in this case a font, with our given object/ animal. My given animal was chameleons. I decided to merge the camouflaging characteristic of the chameleon and its skin to create a new text spelling out ‘Blend’. Spherical shapes were used as a base to resemble the eyes of the chameleon. I also chose to use stippling/ pointalism as it was a better way of creating a texture, better reflecting the dots of the skin’s pigments, Chromatophores. A lack of colours was also intentional to allow more focus on the texture of the stippling.

Transient Channels is a series of fleeting moments captured in the little known underpasses of East Coast Park, Singapore. The project aims to capture the essence of a sense of place in the park. Though sitting quietly hidden in the foliage of the park, these accessways serve an important role in connecting the park with Singapore. Seperated by a large 6 to 8 lane expressway, it is fairly disconnected physically from the points of access by means of public transport. These underpasses act as transient channels, connecting Singaporeans with the park.

Looking for a subject for a school project that focuses on time and light, I looked to one of singapore’s oldest HDB districts, it was completed between 1962 and 1963, as part of the five inital districts within Queenstown, Singapore’s first satellite estate. Tanglin Halt acquired its name from a time in the past when it was a train stop on the KTM line. The trains have long since stopped running and the Tanglin Halt train tracks are now converted to a green walking trail. The area’s kampung spirit evidently still lived till present times, with residents looking out for one another.
Unlocked front gates, gathering of friends, there is a whole collage of the everyday life of the residents that will become memories they bring with them after its 31 blocks of flats, seven commercial blocks and two markets and food centres become demolished at the end of 2021. This series of photos capture the scenes of Tanglin Halt on a rainy night, scenes that seem mundane, but would never be present again. The lights of Tanglin Halt continues to shine ever so brightly in the foggy night.

Final layout for the publication: The layout and colour scheme was inspired from the glow of the orange light in the darkness of the night. I used large images with a small text accompanying at the far corner, as I wnated to emphasize on the images more than the description itself.

With a photography module in the year one syllabus, I had the chance to be able to work on many different photography projects. Ranging from studio portraits to object and also landscape/ outdoor photography.
Portraits
These are interesting portraits taken throughout the whole first year of the course. Some shots required some editing for the submittals including those on the next page. These were for a Carte De Visite shoot (left) as well as a Surrealist Self Portrait (right).

Exploring the realm of film photography led me to the Minolta SRT101, my first film camera (2nd hand!). These are some selected shots from a trip to London back in 2019. Here I used Fujifim Superia X-TRA 400 and Kodak Ultramax.

[2021 - Work In Progress]
I have always loved handcrafting and exploring hands-on work. My passion for making led me to many interesting hobbies including card making, crocheting, embroidery as well as my recent experiements with clay accessories! This year I am working toward creating a brand for my works and hence I started 5am Feels.

I believe what we create is strongly influenced by the way we feel and I wanted to reflect this in the works I create and thus the brand. (I am also known for being a night owl and work better at night/wee hours of the morning, and this can also be shown in the 5am HAHA)

After graduating from polytechnic I had the priviledge to work in an Interior Architectural firm that focuses on Hotels and F&B outlets, including occasional corporate clients. From my three years with them I learnt a lot and was involved in many of the projects both locally and overseas. One of which was the UOB Universal & Wealth Banking located in Singapore. I was part of the team that worked with the renovation of the outlet’s Universal Banking as well as the redesigning of branding and interior of the Wealth Banking sector. This was a very hands-on project as I coordinated with clients and contractors first hand and was able to be on-site managing the project’s construction progress.

Another F&B that I worked on while working as an Interior designer was the Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill Restaurant/ Bar for The Londoner in Macau. Working with my team, we contacted clients directly and coordinated the design from the concept stages all the way to the material selection as well as the small details of the construction. This project allowed me to learn a lot hands-on as I was also put on site, travelling with the bosses to Macau twice to manage the on-site correspondences.
