Butterfly Tai Chi Basic Set Horse Riding Stance All the exercises in this set are performed from a starting position called ‘Horse Riding Stance’. This posture is used in virtually every Oriental martial art, and is often used as a separate exercise to increase one’s leg strength, concentration, deep breathing and Qi flow. In Chinese, this is called ‘Zhang Zong’ or ‘standing like a tree’. Stand with your feet parallel and shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees into a shallow squat, making sure you are comfortable. Keep your back straight and head upright. Let your arms hang in a relaxed manner with your fingers curled slightly inwards.
