WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LECORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier makes reference to Pictorial space being that which is represented from a singular frontal plane. It is described as something which has no measurable or technical merit, but instead a representation of space which can not by physically explored or extrapolated. It is this planar orientation that nullifies it as interactive space.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Within Le Corbisuer’s painting, a demonstration of flatness is a predominent element whick makes use of two elements. Firstly, he develops this concept through the use of dimensionality and depth displayed on a singular plane. This is then complimented by the use of colour and shape to, while creating separation of objects, demonstrate unity and connection.

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

This is the first projection of the 2D world image onto the axonometric drawing. Reference lines were drawn to demonstrate location along the frontal plane (refer to Appendix A for example). Height measurements were then taken to determine the line length on a 90-degree plane. The depth of an object (distance along 135-degree plane) was decided regarding positioning within the world.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

By combining both projections of the 2D world within the same boundary creates the basis for the final drawing. This was done by overlaying the two separate projections and tracing them to form a single model.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Allan differentiates between pictorial space and projection in this text as the main difference being that projection represents and infinite time and distance element. Where pictorial space can be seen to end at a specific point and have limitations, projection opposes this concept in a sense that it runs parallel, creating an infinite element to the concept. As well as this, Allen differentiates the two through definition of projection as being an accurate, measureable, technical depiction of a space, where is pictorial is subjective and fixed to a singular reference point.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) The concept of axnometric projections derives from the concept of deeper exploration and representation of the physical world, in a more accurate sense. While pictorial space could be used to illustrate the view of a more complex world, due to the single-point nature of the construction, it could not achieve this outcome in a way as accurate as projection. This new concept of visual construction allowed more complex and abstract illustrations to be represented in a more applicable and relevant format.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

?

To develop the interactive space between the two worlds, the theme of Mario’s heritage was taken into consideration. The new world was transformed into a variation of Venice following the concept of a sinking city. Floodwaters were introduced into the landscape, as well as tree trunks depicted along the cut lines to replicate the underground construction of this Italian city. Structures were decorated to replicate Venetian architecture, as well as the famous bridge design.

APPENDIX

For character design, a scale was first decided to make sure they were accurate. I chose 13mm as this was the diameter of the pipes, an element which Mario is seen to climb down. This was then traced and overlayed onto the new world.

World 1 positioned along the projection lines

Between the stage of combining the two worlds and the end product, the development of the world changed multiple times. I had chosen the theme of Venice, however due to the topography and layout, it did not show enough complexity. This was when it was decided to do a sinking Venice theme. 9
