14 Essential Ayurveda Health Tips for Winter Season

Winter season, as per Ayurveda is the best time of the year. Winter–flu and cold season, season where contagious disease happens, making sick and lazy so it’s best to be prepared. Due to winter, people tend to eat more due to increase of digestive power, less of physical activities which end up with health problems. Here are some Ayurveda health tips which will help you to keep warm and healthy in winter season.  Rise along with the sun. As per Ayurveda one should wake up at 5:00 am in morning along with sun. Do mediation, yoga or walking just to keep body warm and active in winter. Try to wake up a bit early according to your regular schedule especially in winter.  Have a glass of warm water. Make a habit of having warm water early in the morning just to activate digestive systems and to get rid from morning chills.


 Moisturize your skin with warm oil of sesame or coconut oil. This will help to keep you skin cell energized. After taking bath or shower, gently apply sesame oil in order to promote circulation.  Drink green tea or garlic tea early in the morning with warming spices like cloves, cardamom, black pepper, etc. as per your taste.  Wash your hands and maintain hygiene. Have habit of washing hands after and before having food. Many contagious disease can be prevented by washing hands.  Eat rich and nutritious diet. During winter, body consumes a lot of energy. It is essential to eat foods that are warming and give nutrition’s to body. Drink milk and consume more of dairy products which gives Vitamin B12 and vitamin A that increase your immunity.  Keep your body warm. Maintain body temperature at an optimal level is always important, especially during the winter. Insulate yourself from the cold with the use of caps, woolen socks, scarves, and sweaters. Stay indoors during windy days if you have asthma, especially because cold air can trigger it.

Stay hydrated and drink be healthy. Drinking optimum amount of water every day. As the weather cools and reduces our thirst is easy to forget to drink enough water. You still need to aim for about two liters / day of water during the winter, because it is essential for our body to function.

Have adequate amount of sleep in a day. As per Ayurveda minimum of 8 hours sleep is necessary. Good sleep improves your immunity and prevents disease. Try to avoid things like alcohol, smoking, caffeine and interfere with your sleep

 Foot wear should be worn always. One of the reasons for increased hip and leg pain during winter is constant cold exposure of feet. This increases Vata drastically, worsening the pain. Hence, always wear a footwear, even at home.


Sweating treatment be the best. Just to shrug off excess coldness and to balance out scarcity of sunlight, it is best to undergo sweating treatment once in a while. This can be in the form of small wood fire, hot water bath or exercise.

Keeping bugs at bay. Although we can do a lot to support our health and immunity during winter it is not always possible to avoid catching a cold or flu. The viruses that cause colds are spread by sneezing, coughing and hand contact. Wash or sanitize your hands regularly and avoid close contact with someone who has a cold. Keep household surfaces clean.

Circulate your blood in body. During winter our hands and feet gets often cold. Keep moving with gentle exercise to help improve circulation to the extremities of the body and don’t forget your socks and gloves.

Exercise will generate heat inside your body and help you keep warm. Exercise helps to burn calories and stay fit. Thirty minutes of exercise a day bring many benefits. It increases circulation and helps to keep your extremities warm. Daily exercise can increase the physical and mental state of the person.
