Management

Tips

Teamwork can be defined as an activity or a set of inter-related activities done by more than one person to meet a common goal. Teamwork is not followed only in the corporate world today; rather it is one of the oldest things known to man. Mankind has worked in teams and groups since the primitive days of civilization. Hunting and wandering together in groups is an apt example of teamwork during those days. It is only in recent times, that it has been developed as a ‚concept› in the management jargon.

Together Everyone Achieves More, itself conveys the importance of teamwork in the workplace and elsewhere.

Why is Teamwork Important at Workplace? Teamwork involves the joint efforts of a number of people to achieve a common goal. Therefore every organization should emphasize on the importance of teamwork for the overall growth of the company. Effective teamwork motivates an individual to grow into a responsible citizen and accomplish individual as well as organizational goals.

Building Bonds

Continuous interaction with the team members, working with them for the day, having your meals with them, sharing your joys and sorrows helps in building a strong bond between each other. In this way, you can even make friends for a lifetime.

Just think of a situation where people are competing with each other and trying to excel better than the other. At the same time they are helping and assisting each other in work-related as well as personal difficulties and problems. Wouldn›t that be a great sight? Well this is possible when you work as a team, as everyone is emotionally bonded to each other.

Exploring Creativity

While working in a team you will never be alone, you will always have some or the other person to suggest you good things. Suggestions and advice can help you in generating new ideas and bring out the creativity in you.

Acts of teamwork, are those things which the members of a team do to encourage the interdependence of the team. In teams that are already well-developed and successful, these acts may appear to happen spontaneously and naturally. In teams which are at earlier stages of development, they may need to be consciously applied. Here are 3 important acts of teamwork.

Job Satisfaction

Teamwork is one of the most important reasons for employee job satisfaction. This is because working in a team improves employee performance as well as makes the work enjoyable. This is also conducive to employee motivation.

1. Sharing in the team Sharing is one of the defining acts of teamwork and something that is uniquely human. A six-month old baby that receives things from its mother will, by the time it is nine months old be handing them back to her as well. Teams become stronger not just when they share goals, information and ideas, but also when they share things such as fears, values and needs, as well. Open acts of sharing are the mainstay of good teams. They break down the barriers of defensiveness and tell others that the team is more important than any individual on their own. 2. Valuing Team Members One of the everyday acts of teamwork that everyone in the team can perform is to value others. Valuing who others are and what they do is one of the best ways to strengthen the team. It doesn›t require any skill, just a willingness to do it. Make it a habit to get to know people better. Use their names. Remember personal things about them. Show interest. Don›t judge them. Give

Increased Speed of Work

With many people handling a single project and doing the assigned work properly, the overall work speed increases and your team can complete the project well within the given time frame.

them strokes of recognition. Listen to them. Accept them for who they are. Warren Bennis, professor of business administration at the University of Southern California said the campus is in what he describes as a «dry, crack-infested part of LA». But, he says, every morning is a delight because the grounds of the university are kept so green and fresh forming a contrast to the surrounding city. «It makes a big difference to me, but I wonder if anyone has reminded the gardeners of the importance of their work.» 3. Asking for help from fellow team mates Seeking help from others is an act of teamwork that shows that the team is maturing. Instead of pretending that we know it all, we are honest to admit we don›t know everything and need help. We often hesitate to ask for help because we think we should know the answers, or because we fear being rejected. One way to encourage mutual reliance is to get each team member to work for a period of

time with each other team member in turn. This helps people to appreciate the strengths of others in the team and to learn from them. In larger organizations, people from one function can spend time with people from other functions. Sharing, valuing each other, and asking for help are important acts of teamwork in teambuilding. As they become the habitual ways in which members of the team work, the team will become stronger, happier, and more productive. In the present day globally competitive market, the real success of a firm lies in the performance of its team. A dull, demotivated team lacking in coordination leads to the downfall of an organization whereas a company with well organized employees charts out the path to success. HR policies of the company are hence always directed for the betterment of the employee so that their performance can be maximized. So, next time, your team lands up with a project, remember the motto: «Together We Can».
