“ALTERNATIVE TOURISM DESTINATIONS OF BURSA” THE PROJECT AND OBJECTIVES

URS

Tourism is one of the fastest developing sectors in the world. Countries, regions and cities are in a big race to attract tourists to themselves in a globally growing competition environment. As in many countries, tourism in our country constitutes one of the most important forces of economy. It is regarded as one of the most important sectors that create jobs, provide foreign exchange inflows and attract foreign investment and is a natural attraction with historical and archaeological sites, developing tourism infrastructure and cultural structures. Studies have revealed that the trends in the developing tourism market change. As a result of changing values and consumption patterns, tourists nowadays tend towards the original and the singular; cultural experience richness, diversity and destinations that respect historic and natural environments are rather preferred. Bursa is a perfect match for the above mentioned profile with its historic and cultural heritage, authentic geography and natural values. Bursa, with these qualities, offers significant opportunities for assessing the potential for tourism and seizing these opportunities is only possible by understanding the change in modern-day values, life styles and consumption patterns. Accordingly; the overall objective of the project “Alternative Tourism Destinations of Bursa” is the development, extensification and diversification of eco-tourism and adventure tourism in Bursa, considering the protection and use of balance of natural and cultural resources, and to evaluate the potential for tourism in the region. For this reason, 59 tracks are made available for 12 different activities, just to form a basis for adventure and eco-tourism in Bursa.

Bursa From Past to Present Archaeological resources date the first traces of settlement in Bursa back to 8,500 years ago, to the foundations of civilization the Neolithic period. There are numerous mounds that shed light on the prehistoric past of the northwest Anatolia in Bursa. About thirty of these mounds have already been detected, which are villages where people lived in the prehistoric period. After the collapse of the Hittite Empire in 1200 BC, which was first central authority in Anatolia, the Bursa region was invaded by communities like Bithynians and Thys, who later on came together and founded the Kingdom of Bithynia. Bursa became a city and was surrounded by walls was during the period of the Bithynian King Prusias I and was named therefore “Prusia” at the time. The Region was invaded by the Lydians VII BC, then passed into the hands of the Persians 545 BC, and met with the domination of Alexander III (the Great) after 333 BC who defeated the Persians and conquered Anatolia. The Kingdom of Bithynia was bonded with the Roman State with the testament of King Nikomedes IV (74 BC) and after this date it has been one of the Roman provinces in Asia. For many years, Bursa in the Roman domination later continued its existence as a province of the Byzantine Empire. Bursa and the surrounding area has been a very important region for Christians since II. Century AC and more than 50 churches and monasteries were founded from the V. Century AC onwards in various regions of Uludağ. Uludağ was given the name “Olympos” in history, which means “the Eternal Shine”. Later on it was called “Oros Ton Kalegeron”, “Keşişdağı” meaning “the Monk Mountain” because of the monasteries it was hosting; it was mentioned in the Travel Books of Evliya Çelebi as “Clergy Mountains” and was finally named Uludağ in 1925.

The Turks came to Bursa for the first time in 1080. İznik was seized by the Seljuks between the years 1081-1097 and was made the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk Empire through these years. Ottoman Principality founded in 1299 in Söğüt, added İnegöl, Bilecik, Yenişehir and İznik to its territories. Bursa was bound to the Ottoman Empire by Orhan Gazi in 1326. Bursa gained its main importance during the Ottoman period being the first capital of a world empire of the time, which showed the direction to the world for centuries. Located on the Silk Road, Bursa with the distinction of being the gateway of Asia to the West in the XVI. Century, has been a center for commerce, culture, arts and politics. Bursa was occupied by the Greeks on July 8, 1920 during the years of the Independence War; stayed in Greek occupation for two years and was liberated from the occupation on September 11, 1922 as a result of great struggles. The Armistice of Mudania was signed on October 11, 1922 as the most important step towards independence. The city was reconstructed in the Republic Period and Bursa became a commercial center for the industry associations in the early years of the Republic. Bursa carries traces of many civilizations with their thousands of years of historical entities, from prehistoric times to the present day, which should be preserved. Bursa, being the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, can be defined as a “Museum City” with the historic identity and its architectural texture. The view of Uludağ in the North and far away the Marmara Sea, the view of Keles villages in the South can be observed. This path unites with the mine path 300 meter East of the Summit cottage and continues towards East. The first plain, seen after the Summit gate is Rasatdüzü. This path is the intersection point of the paths leading to Karataş hills after 2,5 kilometers to the left and the path leading to the Summit to the right. If continued to the left, the distinct steep and stony path under the Karataş hills from which Kilimli, Buzlu Göl (Icy Lake) and Uludağ Summit can be viewed, descends to Kilimgöl. Seen from the Lakes Region, the mass in the South, looking like a wall, is actually the 2.543 meter high summit of Uludağ. In Kilimli Lake, drinking water is supplied directly from the fountain. The unpaved road stretching from the northern exit of the lake, passes Karagöl (Black Lake) and connects to Alaçam Village after 18 kilometers. If continued to the right from the Lakes-Summit intersection, the highest point of Uludağ; the Summit is reached, after a 1,9 kilometer walk., writing one’s hiking memories into a notebook, hidden in a can under a polygon stone at this point, has become a tradition since 1936.
