Custom Solutions Guide

Introduction

Overview This Custom Solutions Guide was designed to be a presentation tool which you can use anywhere. It clearly defines Tweeter’s multi-room audio/video and home integration offerings and their positioning in our mix. The pages in this guide don’t show every possible configuration or option for each product set. The sections merely provide a snap-shot of each system in its most common configuration. With this guide you’ll be able to educate your customer by first asking them questions and then showing them what’s possible. Listen intently to their needs and ultimately you’ll be able to focus in on the solution that makes the most sense for them. Always be an advocate for your customer’s needs. This Guide is intended to be used in coordination with the Labor Guide. Once you have selected a solution from this book, refer to the corresponding manufacturer’s section in the Labor Guide Binder. Review the ‘System Design Guidelines’ for the brand you’ve chosen to ensure that what you have a good fit. If the system is within the guidelines, continue using the Labor Guide to design the system. Be sure to apply the appropriate labor, parts and accessories. Always consult with your Field Supervisor for technical support.

How to Use This Guide Open the guide to a section. The left and right pages of each section are designed to work together.

Begin with the Overview paragraph. This defines the product set.

Use the images to describe keypad and remote control functions. Paint a picture of how the system will work.

Use the Diagram to show the ‘big picture’ or dive into deeper detail if required.

The Features section provides a list of benefits.

The Considerations section lists notable limitations.

Some Diagram pages feature keypad and automation device options at the bottom.*

Note: Commit the Overview, Features and Considerations sections to memory. This is where the customer counts on you to know your business and guide them to the best solution for their lifestyle.

Home Theater Overview

Overview Home Theater means different things to different people. To some it means a Living Room with a flat screen TV above the fireplace and a simple “hidden” surround sound system. To others it means a dedicated room crafted to resemble a classic movie house - complete with video projector and large filmscreen (measured in feet, not inches), a world class surround sound system, tiered theater seating, acoustical room treatments, theatrical décor, specialty lighting, and of course; an easy to use touchscreen remote control system. No matter which end of the spectrum you favor, Tweeter has solutions that will fit your budget and exceed your expectations. Follow the selection order on the following page to ensure a perfect system.

Custom Solutions Guide

Home Theater Overview

Essential Home Theater Categories

1 Display

First, choose the display. Whether selecting a flat screen TV or a video projection system with a 10-foot wide screen, the display is the the focal point of the system. Also pick brackets and mounting items.

2 Speakers

Next, pick the speakers. Choose a soundbar, in-ceiling, in-wall, onwall, invisible, bookshelf, high performance floorstanding, or HTIB system based on the room’s layout and the customer’s preferences.

3 Sources

Now, pick the sources. Include customer provided items such as their cable box, and add a DVD player, audio and video servers, iPod dock, gaming system and any other desired sources.

4 Amplification

Now that you know what speakers you are using and how many sources there are, you can select the best receiver or surround sound processor and amplifiers to appropriately drive your system.

5

Control

And now; the most important item: the control system! Choose a remote control system based on the summary of gear. If using a Control4 or Crestron audio system, use their controls in the theater.

6

Power & Surge

Now that you know everything that needs to be plugged-in, choose the power and surge protection. And don’t forget a UPS back-up power supply for any items which feature a processor or hard drive.

7

Furniture

Choose furniture that not only looks good, but that also provides ventilation and makes the system easy to use and maintain. The best choice is often an OmniMount or Middle Atlantic equip. rack.

8

Cabling

Now that you know where everything will be located and how the system will connect together, you can choose all of the cabling and interconnects. Always choose high quality cables for best results.

If your system includes a Control4 or Crestron control system you can also include lighting control. Nothing sets the mood for a home theater experience better than automatic dimming of the room lights.

Dedicated Home Theater Categories

10 Theater Acoustics

Dedicated theater rooms require acoustical room treatments, columns, and finish details that not only optimize the room acoustics for world class sound, but that also make the room look outstanding.

11 Theater Seating

When designing a dedicated room, it isn’t complete without theater seating. Tweeter offers a variety of chairs ranging from cost effective options to chairs that move in sync with the movie.

12 Theater Décor

And to finish off the system, select from a variety of décor items including movie posters, marquees and popcorn makers. We can also engage our custom design services for the most lavish rooms.

Custom Solutions Guide Overview Don’t settle for the sound that comes from your TV’s speakers; add a Bose® CineMate®, 3•2•1® or Lifestyle® solution. You’ll be awed by the big sound that comes from such a compact package. Also, with Lifestyle® systems, you can easily add music to additional rooms. Simply add matching Bose® amplifiers, wireless units and smart 2-way remote controls and you’ve got that great Bose sound throughout your home.

Features Lifestyle® systems provide excellent expansion capability offering both wired and wireless solutions. This is an elegant solution when a “stack of black components” is not desired. The Lifestyle® 38, 48, and Designer Series system features a built-in audio server that stores all of your music digitally. Use the optional 2-way wireless controllers to choose music by genre, artist, album or song. The Lifestyle® SA-3 stereo amplifier (100 watts/ch) is ideal for virtually any speakers, inside or out.

Considerations Lifestyle® systems have their own unique shape which hinders the stacking of other components. Allow enough space for the Lifestyle® media center to sit on a shelf or in a cabinet by itself. Proprietary connection cables and wall plate kits are required to connect the Lifestyle® system’s Acoustimass® module and speakers. The optional Bose® Personal® Music Center II advanced controller is an ideal choice for remote rooms. However, it’s always a good idea to add a Universal Remote Control system in the Home Theater room to make total control of your theater easy.

NOTES: A Bose® VS1 Video Expander is recommended to support additional video sources. When using the included Lifestyle® wireless remote it is necessary to use the included Bose® TV Power Sensor and add an IR repeater system to control the sources. Alternatively, it is highly recommended to use a Universal Remote Control along with a RF Base unit (which replaces the IR Repeater System).

Living Room Home Theater

Overview Turn your Living Room or Bedroom into a Home Theater. Whether totally hidden or high profile, we’ll make it look and sound outstanding! We’ll also include a Universal Remote that makes it easy to operate and eliminates that stack of confusing remotes.

Features Follow the steps listed on page 5 to design a Home Theater Solution for the room. Always specify at least a Universal Remote Control system to make the system easy to use. Don’t underestimate this element, as most customers will say that this is the most important aspect of any home theater.

Considerations Only the MRF350 or the MSC400 will be supported in Universal Remote applications. The RFX250 antenna should always be positioned away from any A/V equipment. (CUSIRREPEATR includes remotely locating the RF sensor.)

The MX950 and the MX900 should not be sold on the same project. These remotes have a similar look and feel, but some buttons are differently placed. In order to prevent any confusion from one room to the next, selling the same remote works best. This allows the customer to easily use the system in any area of the home. When specifying a Control4 or Crestron system for the rest of the house, always use a matching Control4 or Crestron home theater control solution. Don’t underestimate this element, as most customers will say that this is the most important aspect of any home theater.

Considerations When specifying a Universal Remote Control solution for a dedicated home theater you should use the MSC400 Master System Controller. This unit provides serial control and I/O status sensing which will ensure that the system will run perfectly without any hitches. This system truly delivers ‘one-touch control’. When specifying a Control4 or Crestron system for the rest of the house, always use a matching Control4 or Crestron home theater control solution.

Volume Controls

Overview Volume Controls are long-established as the most basic form of control. They are the right choice for anybody who would like to share music from their main system in up to 2 remote areas cost effectively. Per the diagram to the right, volume control solutions require a receiver with a ‘zone 2 output’.

Features Volume controls provide simple and basic attenuation of volume. Many A/V receivers provide a ‘zone 2’ output which allow two different sources to play at the same time. For example; Watch a DVD in the Family Room (in surround sound) while someone else is listening to a CD in the Kitchen.

Considerations When using volume controls, every remote room listens to the same music. Volume controls are manual controllers that merely attenuate volume. They allow a range from ‘off’ (the first position) to ‘full volume’ (the last position), and there are typically 10-steps in between. In most instances a dedicated amplifier will be required to power the speakers in the remote area(s). Refer to the the Labor Guide or your Field Supervisor for more details. When specifying speakers in more than 2 areas, don’t do it the old fashioned way with volume controls (see figure 1 to right); use NuVo Simplese. Simplese doesn’t cost any more than volume controls in 3 or more rooms, yet is a much better solution!

Custom Solutions Guide Overview Nuvo Simplese is an incredible value when you’d like music in 3 or more areas. Don’t do it the old fashioned way with volume controls, use Nuvo Simplese! Simplese sounds better, you can listen to different music in each room and adjust volume digitally.

Features Nuvo Simplese provides a cost effective and elegant way to add music to your whole house. Listen to up to 4 audio sources in up to 4 areas. Each area is independent and can listen to something different. For more areas, simply add a second Simplese unit for a total of up to 8 rooms. Convenient keypads allow you to turn on the system, select a source and adjust volume. Built-in IR sensors in the keypads allow you to control the sources from any room with a remote control. Nuvo’s new Generation D digital amplification design provides cooler, better sounding, more efficient and higher power output. The unique Allport wiring system makes installation a snap and provides a clean look. Everything you need is included in one box: the Simplese controller, 4 keypads (each with White, Almond, Ivory and Black faceplates), and the Allport wiring plate with connection cable. Add the Nuvo Doorbell/telephone interface, which automatically mutes the system anytime the doorbell or phone rings.

Considerations The Simplese system does not provide any control of the sources from the keypads or main unit. The only way to control sources with Simplese is via the built-in IR repeater system. The zone 2 output of a receiver is not a valid feed for Nuvo Simplese. Always directly connect sources such as CD players, iPod docks, cable boxes and dedicated tuners for AM, FM, XM or Sirius Radio.

Custom Solutions Guide Overview Crestron Adagio serves up to 12 rooms of music, controls lighting throughout your home, manages temperature with smart thermostats and provides full control of your home theater. This is the ultimate solution when ease of use is your primary goal.

Features The Adagio AES has built-in amplification for up-to 6 rooms of music. The system can be expanded to support up-to 12 rooms with the addition of an AAE 6-zone Expander Chassis. The AES has enough inputs for a total of up-to 10 audio sources. This includes the fact that there are three built-in tuner slots, which each support dual FM or XM tuner cards (each tuner takes two of the 10 inputs). Up to 2 Crestron iPod Docs can be added to provide for full 2-way control of your iPods from Touchscreens or the LCD Keypad. Use the Crestron AAS Audio Server for the ultimate in hard drive based audio distribution. The ease of use of this system is without peer. The flexibility and scalability of this system is only surpassed by Creston's larger solution offerings which cost much more.

Considerations When integrating with a home theater, the home theater zone occupies one of the AES’s six zones. Always try to specify the same style of user interface throughout the home to ensure consistency for your customer from room to room (ie: use touchscreens OR LCD keypads in every room). As an exception; 12button keypads are a good choice in seldom used rooms or where minimal control is needed. Be sure to engage your Field Supervisor for support when considering lighting control or thermostats. A Tweeter supplied network and a broadband Internet connection is required with all Crestron systems. Custom Solutions Guide V2 January 19, 2007 Page 18 of 24

Custom Solutions Guide Overview Sonos is ideal for anybody who already has MP3 music on their computer, or would like access to their hearts content of the music industries' library of 2-1/2 million songs via the Rhapsody online service (computer not required for Rhapsody). The Sonos award winning wireless remote makes it easy and fun to access your digital music.

Features Sonos is the ideal way to gain access to the music that is stored on your computer and play it throughout your home. Cover art, artist, song and genre information all appear on the color screen of the remote. Use the remote’s scroll wheel and intuitive navigation screens to select your favorite music, create play lists and control any or all audio zones. Only one Sonos Zone Player unit needs to be hardwired to your network. Add other Zone Player units easily since they all connect wirelessly via Sonos’ patented Wireless Network. The online Rhapsody service provides access to the music industries 2-1/2 million songs, which are available all the time, whether your PC is on or not. Rhapsody is a fee based service.

Considerations Sonos can’t play Apple encoded AAC music files or music downloaded from iTunes. Sonos requires a home network and a broadband Internet connection for the artist info, cover art, and to make the optional Rhapsody service available. You must supply at least one wired network connection for the first player. It’s possible to access music from more than one computer on the network, or even a NAS (Network Attached Storage) hard drive. Ask your Field Supervisor for technical guidance where needed. The Sonos Remote can only control Sonos Zone Players (it’s NOT programmable and won’t control any other device). It’s also NOT possible to control a Sonos Zone Player from any other remote (you must use a CR100). Custom Solutions Guide V2 January 19, 2007 Page 20 of 24

Custom Solutions Guide Overview With Apple TV, you can enjoy movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts in your iTunes library, plus photos and movie trailers, all on your widescreen TV - wirelessly, from your Mac or PC. Apple TV makes it easy for you to enjoy your digital content.

Features Now, you can finally view your family pictures and listen to your favorite digital music right from your TV. Any time day or night, simply download what you want to watch or listen to from among millions of choices on the iTunes Store. Apple TV also automatically grabs the digital media on your computer and makes it available for you to enjoy on your TV. Best of all, whenever you add something new in iTunes, Apple TV updates automatically. Thanks to the intuitive interface, finding what you want to watch is as easy as navigating a few simple menu items using the included Apple Remote. Just a few clicks and you'll be enjoying all your favorites from the comfort of your couch. Features a Built-in 40GB Hard Drive to store content locally. You can also stream content from up to 5 computers on your home network that are running iTunes software.

Considerations Requires Apple iTunes Software loaded on at least one MAC or PC. Requires a wired or wireless home network connection and Broadband Internet Access. Apple recommends replacing your current router with their Airport Extreme Wireless Router with type N (high speed) wireless connectivity. Apple TV does not interact with your cable or satellite TV systems nor does it have a built-in TV tuner for live TV viewing. It is totally reliant on iTunes for its’ content.
