LAS VEGA S, NV
T H E N AT I O N A L C L E A N E N E R G Y S U M M I T WELCOME Welcome to the National Clean Energy Summit and fabulous, solar-powered Las Vegas! It’s our pleasure to welcome you to the nation’s premier event for clean energy leaders, professionals, and advocates. Since its inception 10 years ago, the Summit has cultivated a reputation for creating a space where ideas that will advance the clean energy economy can be heard, debated, and implemented. Just as the Summit has cemented its place in the energy sphere, so have renewables in America’s energy landscape. The U.S. produces 43 times more electricity from solar power than it did a decade ago, the year of the first National Clean Energy Summit. With 82 gigawatts of installed capacity, there is now utility-scale wind energy in 41 states, and distributed wind in all 50, plus Puerto Rico, the USVI, and Guam, generating electricity for as low as 2 cents a kWh. The price for renewable energy has fallen dramatically around the country and is now the lowest cost option in many places. The average American uses 10 percent less energy than they did 10 years ago. This year’s Summit, themed “Integrating Innovation,” will highlight the economic, environmental and national security benefits of innovative energy technologies and explore how policy, regulatory changes, and new business models are shaping the clean energy economy. We hope you will find our speakers and their presentations insightful, our video breaks thought-provoking, and our exhibits engaging. We believe your participation in this conference will not only benefit your personal and professional growth, but will help improve and enhance the clean energy sector as a whole. Thank you again for joining us and supporting the growth of this industry and the National Clean Energy Summit.

Upon taking office, Governor Baker worked to close two budget gaps worth more than $2 billion without raising taxes, while bolstering local aid for our schools and communities, investing in a more reliable public transportation system and prioritizing funds to fight the opioid and heroin epidemic. Ensuring Massachusetts continues to be a national leader in education, Governor Baker has invested over $4.6 billion in Chapter 70 education funding — the highest level of local education aid in state history. Confronted with a devastating opioid and heroin epidemic, Governor Baker’s administration has implemented a plan focused on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery support, including partnering with the legislature on passage of landmark legislation. Prior to his election, Governor Baker was a highly successful leader of complex business and government organizations, serving as a cabinet secretary to both Governor William Weld and Paul Cellucci, and leading Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, as CEO, from the brink of bankruptcy to one of the nation’s highest ranked health care providers.

10 YEARS OF CLEAN The inaugural National Clean Energy Summit was held in Las Vegas 10 years ago. During the last 10 years, the nation’s energy landscape has changed dramatically. New technologies have changed the way Americans use, generate, and even store energy. Transportation has gotten greener and cleaner. Evolving economics have given people and businesses more access to renewable energy. As we convene the ninth National Clean Energy Summit: Integrating Innovation, we reflect on those changes.
H E RE’S A G L I MPS E OF WHE R E W E A R E TO DAY : The U.S. generates nearly EIGHT TIMES as much electricity from the sun and the wind as it did in 2007—enough to power more than 25 MILLION HOMES with improvements made via:
WIND GROWTH
SOLAR GROWTH
The U.S. produced almost 7x as much windpowered electricity in 2016 as in 2007 and wind’s share of the national electricity generation increased from 0.8 percent to 5.5 percent.
The U.S. produced 43x as much electricity from solar in 2016 as in 2007.
In 2009, the price for wind energy was more than 7 cents/kilowatt-hour, and today, wind energy averages 2 cents/kWh in certain regions.
Just last year, the U.S. industry installed enough new solar capacity to provide 2 million homes’ worth of electricity. In 2016, Nevada installed more solar power than any previous year and is now 4th in the nation for solar production. Solar power prices in Nevada have declined 64% over the past 5 years.
