in and around Loose Community News Loose Amenities Association Update January 2021
The on-going situation continues to prevent any events to be organised, however life in the valley continues, for this edition some explanation for having sheep in the valley. To manage the meadows, we allow sheep to roam within the fenced areas. They graze on the scrub, grass and brambles thus allowing wildflowers to flourish. This is preferable to manual cutting work by our volunteers or using heavy mowers which can degrade the wildlife and soil. The summer wildflower meadow, named Rainbow (closest to the village) is grazed hardest at this time of year (winter grazing) with the maximum number of sheep present. The meadow is then left un-grazed for the rest of the year. The other open areas in the valley are grazed throughout the year. The lighter, all-year round grazing gives us a shorter sward and keeps the bramble patches controlled but not eliminated. The shorter sward is good for starlings and thrushes for feeding and also allows short grass wild flowers to grow. The bramble patches though much maligned, do of course, provide refuge and shelter for wild life. We are building a permanent flock, which is currently in two groups. A number of Wethers (castrated males), of which most have horns except for two. These two are patchier and are named Flint and Blackjack (pictured). The second group are mainly
4
lambs from earlier in the year, they join the older group when we need more grazing. As the sheep are in the valley all the time, they get used to people and dogs and the land. If you walk the valley regularly, you get to know them! Loose Amenities Association is a registered charity with the aim of maintaining the Valley land and providing community events. If you would like to be involved when restrictions are eased please visit the website, www.loose-amenities.org.uk or our Facebook page. We hope 2021 will return to some normality and that we will be able to put on our usual events:- Easter Egg hunt - Duck Race - Music Night - Scarecrow Festival - Senior Citizens Tea Party - Carols around the tree Loose Swiss Scouts As soon as we can we will be resuming our jumble sales. We won’t be holding one in January, but we will advertise a date as soon as we are able to hold one.

Loose Parish Council
We understand and appreciate that 2020 was an extremely difficult year. As we move forward into 2021, the parish council team hopes that this will be a better year for all.
LPC Council & Committee Meetings
The Parish Council continues to hold meetings electronically, via the Zoom platform. Some committee meetings are also taking place.
On-going Covid restrictions (Kent was placed in Tier 4 at time of writing) continue to bring daily challenges to everybody. Please see the LPC website for current information.
Members of the public are welcome to participate in any council or committee meeting (there is an agenda item on all agendas, specifically for this).
We know that winter always brings its own set of challenges (without the added complication of Covid-19) especially if you are on your own. Issues such as dealing with loneliness and isolation, to keeping warm, money worries, etc., can seem daunting.
Please note: If you are interested in making any representations or commenting on any item on the Planning Committee’s agenda, decisions are currently being made by Round Robin emails only. Emails need to be received by 5pm, on the Friday preceding the Monday meeting.
If you are experiencing such difficulties and require help, you can contact the Kent Together website or helpline (below).
There are also a number of other Useful Links on the parish council website and noticeboards. These include Your Local Representatives, and other Local Contacts and organisations the Council works with.

Loose Fete 2021
After having to be cancelled last year, we are hoping 2021 will see the welcome return of the Loose Community Fete, provisionally on Saturday 4 September. Shayler's Funfair, being able to meet the required safety guidelines, brought some welcome (and rare) enjoyment to early September 2020 and we thank them and those who supported the funfair. Thanks also to those who were involved in the early stages of last year's event before the lockdown etc., intervened. Luckily, by all accounts, the majority of the sponsors we have talked with, are keen to resume their support of the fete event. Consequently, once we hopefully have a better idea about the future with regard to the pandemic and ongoing restrictions, we will be starting to make preparations for the Fete in January – probably initially meeting online (via Zoom) on 25 January. If you wish to get involved or contribute in any way to the preparations, or the Fete/Funfair event itself, please contact the Parish Council office at office@loose-pc.gov.uk.
Having your input on Planning Applications at parish level
Prior to Covid restrictions, Loose Parish Council welcomed visitors to its planning meetings to voice their opinions on applications. Post Covid, planning meetings have not been possible. Currently, recommendations from the parish on applications to Maidstone Borough Council (the Planning Authority) are determined from councillors “round robins” online within the parish council. The consensus from the round robins formulates the recommendation. To comment on an application, write/email MBC Planning with a copy to Loose Parish Council. It helps if comments are submitted early in the consultation period. This allows parish councillors to take in your views, prior to formulating a recommendation to MBC.
Tea party in a Box
The Community Warden, Liz Lovatt is hoping to organise a ‘tea party’ in a box to be delivered to socially isolated people. She will be looking for volunteers; cake and savouries donations; plus nominations for those that would like to receive a box. Date to be announced.
If anyone is interested in getting involved, please get in touch with Liz on 07813 712107.
Knock and Check - Kent Community Foundation
Each year there are about 1600 avoidable winter deaths across the county. Residents are being encouraged to knock and check on their elderly neighbours during the colder months when they are most at risk – whilst adhering to current Covid guidelines. For more information please see:
www.kentcf.org.uk/knockandcheck
LPC Councillor Vacancies
For anyone wishing to play a very real part in shaping the local community, LPC currently has vacancies for Councillors. Aside from the main monthly parish council meeting, Councillors also sit on one or two committees/working groups (e.g. Planning, Pavilion and Community Hub, Environment, Events) with meetings held on Monday evenings. Currently all meetings are held virtually by zoom. More details? Please contact the Clerk or visit our website.

Guide to local walks The Medway at West Farleigh 5.3 miles/8.4 km – Leisurely - Allow 2 - 2.5 hours Starting from Teston Bridge Country Park. ME18 5BX From the CP return to the road (B2163) and turn R along the footpath towards the bridge until you can cross the road to a stile on the opposite side. Go over the stile and take the path with the river on your R. Continue on the Medway Valley Walk path until you reach a lane (South Street) that goes underneath a railway bridge. Do not go up this lane but turn R across the footbridge to go up St Helen’s Lane. At the top of the lane turn R to along the footpath beside the B2010. Follow this main road past the West Farleigh sign until you reach Church Lane on the R. Walk down the lane and take the footpath L opposite the church. Keep to this path crossing two stiles until it becomes a wooded path to reach the B2163. Take care to emerge onto the main road so you can safely cross to the lane opposite. Follow the lane as it bends L and then R to pass Tutsham Mill Cottages to a stile. Follow the marker ahead for the Medway Valley Walk. Bear R in front of Tutsham Hall, pass between cottages to a stile and follow the track to a stile by a barn. Cross and then follow the Medway Valley Walk R down to the river bank. Cross the stile, walk through the wood and cross a plank bridge into a field. Walk parallel with the river and then bear to the L to cross a small bridge into the next field. Make for the R-H corner and go through a kissing gate. Continue until you reach the road, where you turn R and cross Bow Bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge turn R, walk down to the river and follow the river bank path. Keep following this path, going through several gates until you come to Teston Lock. Continue for 200yds (l83m), then bear L across a plank bridge and walk across the field back to CP. Sissinghurst Castle and Frittenden Distance: 5.5 Miles (2h 30m) Park in National Trust car park at Sissinghurst Castle. There is a £2 charge for non-members. You may need to book the carpark in advance tel: 01580 710701. A good plan is to arrive early enough to be at the garden 14
gate when it opens, spend an hour in the garden while it is quiet, have a coffee then do the walk. On returning to the castle you can have a tea and if you are feeling energetic do a walk in the woods by the lakes (leaflet available from ticket office) where the bluebells in April/ May are superb. Start the walk from the car park. Follow yellow arrows to far end of car park, go over stile, keep right to corner of field and cross track to bridleway between fences. Follow all the way to lane. Go straight across and down Sand Lane. Take path over first stile beside gate on left and bear right across field passing lone tree to stile. Head straight across next field to another stile and across field after that to corner of protruding hedge. Follow line of telephone poles into middle of next field then bear left towards steeple of Frittenden church, crossing a couple of fields before reaching the village main street. Turn right along the main street and take a path alongside private drive to Orchard View on the right opposite the school. At the first bend cross the drive and take the path over the stile opposite. Follow the left hand edges of a small field and a large field. At the corner go over a stile on the left and along the right hand edge of the next field to a stile. Follow the left hand edges of three more fields to Sand Lane. Turn right, pass a Chanceford Cottage and take a footpath over a stile on the left. Follow left hand edge of field to fingerpost then turn sharp right across field to stiles. Keep left across next field to stile in corner then bear right across next field to corner of protruding hedge. Keep hedge on your left to next bend and a footbridge. Don’t cross the footbridge but turn right across field towards the right hand corner of a tall hedge. Turn left along the hedge then right at the corner and along the right hand side of the field to Sand Lane. Turn left and opposite Brissenden Farm take a concrete path past a barn. Bear right across the field to a stile. Cross the next field to a stile by a tree. Cross the next field to a bridge. Turn left through gap then sharp right along right hand edge of field, across another bridge and across field to a lane. Turn right. At junction, keep right. Pass Bettenham Manor and when lane bends right take signposted track on left and follow back to Sissinghurst Castle.
