in and around Loose Community News
Loose Amenities Association February 2021 The on-going situation continues to prevent any events to be organised, however life in the valley continues, for this edition some explanation of the valley areas. As shown on the map, there are 4 areas, now bounded by fences. The fences are a relatively recent addition, as these allow us to manage the sheep grazing in different areas and at the same time allow dogs to be off the lead in 3 out of 4 areas. A meadow is simply defined as a field with grass and often wild flowers in it. A shaw is a strip of woodland usually between 5 and 15 metres wide. In the valley, the shaws are all steeply banked areas along the eastern edge.
Roy’s Meadow was named after one of the founding members of LAA, Mr Roy Hood. Roy served for some 60 years in many roles within the association. The meadow in this area has defeated us in attempting to have a diverse range of wildflowers, although Meadowsweet was fairly common last summer. Nettles however do thrive and we have a constant battle to manage these, we are aiming though to have a balance of nettles and grass areas. In the photo, taken at Little Ivy, our volunteers cleared the nettles so as to encourage grass in this area. The trees in the shaw are predominantly Sycamore and Ash, last year we cleared a number of these to allow a Cherry and Oak to flourish More next time on Hopkiln and Limekiln... Loose Amenities Association is a registered charity with the aim of maintaining the Valley land and providing community events. If you would like to be involved when restrictions are eased please visit the website, www.loose-amenities.org.uk or our Facebook page.
Rainbow meadow is so named because it is shaped like a rainbow. In this area we strive to maintain this as our main wildflower meadow. As well as the trees on the eastern bank, there is a group of Alders and a single mature Oak along the stream bank. This could also be described as a riparian zone, the Alders thrive due to the moisture level in the soil.

What’s on & places to visit...
friend, we’ve got a selection of unmissable parks and reserves for you to explore in Kent’s Districts. From parks with alfresco- amphitheatres, BBQ and picnic places perfect for the Summer to vast expanses of Pine trees, wonderful wildlife walks and cosy cafes fit for crisp winter days, there’s plenty to do all year round! So, lace up your walking boots and head out into the beautiful Kent Countryside.
Pet Friendly Beaches to visit
Lower Leas Coastal Park - Folkestone The Lower Leas Coastal Park is home to the largest free adventure play area in the South East. It also boasts an amphitheatre which hosts theatre and musical performances during the warmer months, and is right next to the beach. The park is split into three zones, with the formal zone comprising pine avenues, gardens and flowers blooming all year. The fun zone has several different play areas, while the wild zone is a haven for quiet recreation, where sensitive habitat management allows wildlife to thrive. Westbrook Bay - Thanet A designated water ski area, perfect for people who love their water sports. It is a great family beach with a sandy bay, where a small section of sand remains exposed at high tide. There is an adventure golf course ‘Strokes’ along the promenade, with tennis and bowls close by. There is a cafe on the promenade to keep you in constant supply of ice cream. The nearest car park is located along the promenade of Westbrook, Barns car park.
Canterbury Just outside of the bustling city centre of Canterbury, is Westgate Parks. Wander beside the River Stour, enjoy the bright urban-artwork under the bridges and let the sensory garden and tranquil flow of the river lull you. The chalky river habitat features a range of wild residents such as bats, birds, reptiles and of course amphibians amongst the riverside plants. Fancy a spot of exercise while the kids are expending their boundless energy? Why not make the most of the fresh air and give the outside gym equipment a go! There’s also a Roman-themed play park for the little ones to explore. Medway Feel the sea breeze brush past your face as you take a stroll in the brisk Riverside Country Park in Gillingham. Mix the best of both worlds with an immersive experience on the marshy Saxon walkway, with awe-inspiring views of sweeping seaside scenery. Look out for the native swans, at home in the open expanse and waters, then enjoy a secluded stroll under the trees searching for animal tracks as you go. Want to spend a calm day swanning about in the fater lake is a blend of nature and adventure.
Parks of Kent
Kent, fondly known as the ‘Garden of England’ is full of fresh, floral spaces and paths amidst the very best of the British countryside. Whether you’re looking for an exciting day out with the whole family or a simple saunter with your fluffy

LOOSE PARISH COUNCIL (LPC) CLERK: Kim Owen
Holly Glade Pembroke Road Coxheath Maidstone ME17 4QJ Tel: 07855 000156 (Mon-Thurs 9am-5pm) website: www.loose-pc.gov.uk email: office@loose-pc.gov.uk
Loose Parish Council Review of 2020 2020 proved to be an extremely challenging year for everyone, including Loose Parish Council.
In March 2020, our longstanding caretaker, John Hawker, retired from his post after 13 years of exemplary and invaluable service. In the Autumn a new Deputy Clerk, Nicky Bourne, plus a new Caretaker, David Darby, joined the team. Despite some councillors having to shield, Loose Parish Council continued to hold electronic meetings during 2020. Initially, this was just the main Parish Council and Planning Committee meetings and then as routines became established, other Committee meetings were added. Members of the public were and are able to access meetings, via Zoom.
Community Lockdowns
Councillors and volunteers teamed up over the first lockdown in Spring 2020, to provide residents who were shielding, with an ongoing delivery of essential shopping every Friday. Requested lists were collated on a Wednesday, then ordered through the local Sainsbury’s. The groceries were collected each Friday, then picked and packed into individual orders and delivered personally in the afternoon. Prescriptions were also collected and delivered. A scaled down version of these services are being offered again. For more information, contact the Community Warden, Liz Lovatt Tel: 07813712107 email: liz.lovat@kent.gov.uk. Many thanks to all those who volunteered and have continued to offer their help.
Community Activities
2020 saw many of the usual parish community activities cancelled. These included:
The Annual Parish meeting, normally held in April, where local residents, the parish council and community groups get together to discuss their current plans and activities.
The popular monthly Community Coffee mornings, held at the pavilion on the second Wednesday had to be suspended, following the initial lockdown in March.
The Loose Fete (and Fun Dog Show) (normally held in September). Fortunately, the Fun Fair which is normally held alongside the fete, was able to meet all the rules and regulations and provided a welcome respite for people to have some fun.
It is hoped that some of these activities will resume in 2021.
Brooks Field
Plans were established to ‘re-wild’ a part of Brooks Field which is located in the centre of the village, by the stream. The top layer of grass was removed by a volunteer with a digger, and then the soil was rotavated to remove deep tap roots. A wild seed flower mix was then sown onto the bare soil. Hopefully, in 2021, this area will be vibrant and colourful with poppies, daisies, cornflowers, yellow rattle, ladies bedstraw and white campion. This mix had been specially selected to attract bees, butterflies and pollinators.

To advertise call 01622 741824 or email tom@inandaroundloose.co.uk
The Brooks Field project was funded by a grant from Maidstone Borough Council.
Traffic issues
The Environment Committee had created a ‘Highways Improvement plan’ in conjunction with Kent County Council. The number one priority is to try to prevent traffic coming down the Linton/Loose road from speeding, especially as this road is crossed by school children in two places - at the Linton crossroads from Cornwallis Academy and at Loose Primary school. In 2021, we plan to install speed monitors across various sections of this road. The results will be collated and analysed and will hopefully form the case to persuade Kent County Council to reduce the speed limit along this busy road, from 40 to 30 miles per hour.
Planning Matters
LPC often gets enquiries from concerned residents about developments that they feel have not been given planning permission. LPC always follows these up and where appropriate contact MBC Planning requesting involvement.
Litter Picking
LPC support the local volunteer litter-picking team (Love Loose, Hate Litter). The team of 25 volunteers do a great job clearing rubbish from the pavements and verges of the streets of Loose. Compare Loose with areas where they do not have litter pickers! If you would like to help, contact Chris Lack on 07896 611392.
The parish council would like to thank everyone in the local community who have contributed to the health and well-being of others, during these difficult times.
Financial Matters
So far it has certainly been a very challenging year for everyone, and the Parish Council budgets have been impacted as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. The lockdown measures has caused a large shortfall in the predicted hiring fees for the use of the Parish Pavilion and sports field. We are presently working hard in seeking out all available funding through local Government, and so far have been successful in receiving a total of £17,335. This has helped to support the income shortfall for the current fiscal year.
Precept 2021/22
The precept for 21/22 has now been agreed and whilst there has been an overall increase of 5%, it has been managed to be kept to a minimum. Band D households will only pay an extra £5.84 for the whole year (£83.54 paid 20/21 £89.38 21/22). Simplified budgets for 21/22 can be found on our website for further information. The times ahead do still seem unpredictable, but allowances have been built into the budgets to continue to uphold the uniqueness and historical value of the Loose Parish, and to provide engagement with our local community.
We are always prepared to listen to any ideas Parishioners may have, to help shape the future.

Guide to local walks Cobham Park - Mausoleum – Asheden Wood 5 miles/8 km – Easy - Allow 2 – 2.5 hours Starting from Cobham public car park. DA12 3BZ, From the CP walk back to the Street where you came in and turn left and go past the Ship. Proceed to the end of The Street, over the mini roundabout into Lodge Lane. At the thatched cottage go on through the gate and continue on to go past the Mausoleum. At the next gate on the main path go thought it and turn left immediately onto a footpath. At the bottom of the hill bear left through a gate and continue until you reach the high-speed line. Turn left here. Continue ahead over a lane, then pass a small pond to a gate. Once through the gate bear left away from the railway line. But not as far as the track. Take the initially indistinct path between two large trees and by a water trough slightly uphill to cross the park. Cross the drive to Cobham Hall.Ignore the gate where the path splits, bearing right

to gradually work your way over to the right-hand field boundary. Watch out for a gate in the fence on the right where the path again splits. Go through the gate but turn right (almost back on yourself) between the fence and the hedge along the Darnley Trail to avoid walking on Halfpenny Lane. After about a hundred yards there are two opportunities to go through the hedge to cross safely Halfpenny Lane into Ashenden Wood car park. Go straight ahead on the woodland path, cross another path and continue to a path T-junction. Here go left (at the WW2 information board). Follow the footpath through the wood and avoid side paths. Do not follow the sign to the barrow (unless you want an extra walk). Exit the wood by either of two gates. Once in the field continue ahead with the wood on the left and the field on the right. As you reach Cobham you can go straight ahead to the Street, or alternatively cut across the playing field directly back to the car park.
