YOUR BIG DAY by...YOU! Let’s face it, there are few moments more exciting than saying “yes” to the love of your life. It’s then, of course, that all that hard work really begins! But without wishing to sound an unromantic note, consider this: it’s not the price of that dress that will make you feel special. It’s more about how the dress makes you look that surely really matters. That and all the other bits and pieces that will go into making your day so very memorable. With perhaps the exception of Paris Hilton, little girls don’t lie awake at night dreaming of the happy day they can max out their credit card and try to secure a mortgage all in the same month. They dream, if they dream at all, of the day they can look really nice, be the centre of attention and not have their mother trying to fix them up with that Gary who does their sister’s accounts. And as we hope we show you in this season’s Hitched magazine, we are there with you to helpfully guide you along the way! Our magazine is packed with actual, cool, amazing ideas and real advice you can put to good use from the off!

Real life wedding Shaunna-Leigh Bowen and Andrew Clarris Shaunna-Leigh Bowen, 25, a Midwife from Gowerton, and Andrew Clarris, 30, a Computer Server Consultant from Loughour, had a winter wedding. JESS HAMMETT speaks with the bride…

How did the proposal happen? We were in Las Vegas in front of the Bellagio fountains, on an evening in September 2015. I was really shocked, I wasn’t expecting it! Where did you get married? Was it difficult to choose a venue? Originally, we always said we would get married in Las Vegas, but three days leading up to the proposal, we had food poisoning! We also always thought we would get married in June, but after we came home from Las Vegas, we heard about Oldwalls on the radio, and visited in December. I am

6

|

quite indecisive, but I really like Christmas. Although we never considered a winter wedding before, once it sprung to mind it just seemed right. The gorgeous lake and trees that surround Oldwalls looked so pretty when we visited, even though it was raining. We decided to book for the following December, as we knew it would be beautiful - rain or shine! We were very lucky on our wedding day, as it didn’t rain. In fact, our photographer struggled to capture our group shots because the sun was so bright and low! We also had photographs at Gower Fresh Christmas

Trees, in Three Crosses. It would have been really muddy if it had been raining, but it was beautiful! How would you describe your wedding theme? We wanted our theme to be Christmassy, and quite traditional. We chose a deep purple colour scheme to make it classy. We made some decorations, using Pintrest for inspiration, but we also used Sparkles and Bows. They were at a wedding showcase in Oldwalls, and we loved their centrepieces. One of my bridesmaids made the invites and table decorations.

Did you have any flowers? I struggled finding a florist. I had gone to a few wedding fayres, but I couldn’t find anyone with examples of what I had in mind. We found BloomingBelles through Facebook, and she was truly amazing. I met up with her a few times, for her to understand what I wanted. She was like a friend in the end – I would be there for an hour and we would start talking about all sorts of things! Tell us about your wedding dress… I booked the appointment with Cariad

Bridal in Swansea, and it was the first dress I tried on! It was nothing I thought I would have gone for. It is quite fitted, flaring at the bottom, with a high neck with lace and a diamante band around the middle. It fitted my theme perfectly. Years ago, my mum bought her dress there – before it was Cariad Bridal – so it was very special to me. What suits did the groom choose? We bought the suits in Crush Mens Outfitters. We found out about them through a wedding fayre. They were grey tweed, and

were new in when we started looking. We thought it would be different and compliment the Christmas wedding theme. Did you have bridesmaids?

booked. After my parents passed away I realised how important photographs were. I wanted them to keep, to show family in the future.

Following recommendation, Farhana Ali did my makeup. I found my hairdresser, Lucie

I would highly recommend Rob from Pure Creations Photography. We wanted someone we could get along with, because Andrew and I are not the most confident in front of the camera! He got to understand us, and we had a pre-wedding photo shoot at Llanelli beach. We didn’t know how to stand or pose, so this was a great opportunity to get used to the camera.

Summerfield, through Facebook. I had my hair half up half down, and curled.

He was happy to do anything we suggested, and he was really approachable.

What was your favourite moment?

Do you have any advice for brides to be?

I loved it all! After the ceremony, Andrew and I went for a quick drink and had confetti photographs. This was the first time with each other since saying our vows. It was nice to be able to relax and enjoy with one another!

Don’t rush into any decisions. Choose what you want – not what other people want you to choose.

I had two bridesmaids, one of them was Andrew’s sister, and the other has been brought up like a sister to me. Their dresses were deep purple, and they were from Rhapsody Bridal. Tell us about your beauty prep on the day…

How important was photography for your big day? It was one of the most important things we

POSY POWER Do you know what wedding flowers are in season in the month you get married? Whether you're an October bride looking for autumnal blooms or planning a summer big day and want to find a suitably seasonal bouquet, florists Donna and Paul Jackson know a thing or 10 about finding the best wedding flowers in season. PETER SLEE has been to meet them... 8

HOOSING the flowers for your big day is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning.

But it's not as simple as picking your favourite blooms and requesting them in your wedding colours (sorry!) You really do need to do your homework before meeting a florist. Take some time to figure out what you like, and learn what it's called, before you start talking to florists. There are two main things you'll want to know: the names of flowers and floral terms, like types of bouquets (cascade, posy and biedermeier), arrangements and other details. Talk to other couples about their florists. One of the best ways to find your florist is by word of mouth -- ask for recommendations from newlyweds you know, read reviews and browse wedding magazines. If you're working with a wedding planner or a wedding pro coordinator, they should have some suggestions of area florists. Set up appointments with a short list of florists, so you can connect in person and view a portfolio of their work. You'll want to book someone six to eight months out. Florists book up fast, especially if you're getting married in peak season (May to September), so start vetting them alongside some of your other professionals early in the process and lock one in as soon as you can. Remember too, not all florists are the same. This sounds strange, but what it means is there are different types of wedding pros who deal with flowers. Do you want someone who'll not only make your arrangements but also help design the look of your reception tables and ceremony aisle? A florist designer is probably more your speed. Already have a planner or an eye for design? Then a regular florist will likely do the trick. And you need to show, not just tell! Images are way more telling than words. Bring your inspirations boards, a bridesmaid dress fabric swatch and a photograph of your wedding gown. This will cue your florist in on the look you're after from the start. Keep in mind: Your florist will totally appreciate snapshots that reflect your style, but don't expect exact replicas of what lives on your inspiration board. Still not convinced? Well, just as Pantone predicted, green is set to be the colour of 2017 or at least in the wedding world where Swansea florists are gearing up for a spring season of lush foliage and natural shades.

Officially crowned Colour of the Year is a zesty shade named ‘Greenery’, making it the perfect guide for brides as the style surges in popularity. Who says? Well, the team at Good Florist Guide, the ‘little black book’ of UK and Irish florists with members in South Wales and beyond, who have been sharing their insider knowledge on floral wedding trends for the year ahead. Swansea florists Donna and Paul Jackson run GFGaccredited Flowers by Arrangement in Treboeth, Swansea. The duo have devoted their lives to flowers. And yes, it’s those refreshing green plants that are now very firmly on the style-radar. While less colour might sound boring, Team GFG say there is actually a surprisingly wide spectrum of foliage and green flower varieties available in shades from deep, dark greens and browns to whites and yellows in all sorts of delicious textures. It’s all about bringing the outside in with textures and movement, creating a very natural look. Donna adds: “We love to meet brides with an open mind, or certainly a theme that isn’t the ‘norm’, though understandably that’s quite rare.” Also still blooming on the trend-scale are Britishgrown flowers. Now in its third year, British Flowers Week, which takes place this year from June 19 - 25, has snowballed in success and flies the flag for home-grown blooms with celebrations and events all over the UK. Team GFG say the style is set to continue its strong impact throughout 2017. Flowers by Arrangement regularly dress local venues such as Oldwalls and the King Arthur Hotel. “Our favourite part of doing a wedding has to be delivering the flowers and seeing the

10

delighted face of the bride and her bridesmaids and family,” says Donna. “Having a bride book us based on a recommendation is also highly important to us. We survive on our reputation so it means so much to us.” While working with flowers might seem a walk in the park, it’s easy to forget all that goes on behind the scenes. “We’re often transporting unusual or large items like candelabra arrangements. Once we used crystal candelabras that were so fragile one arm was already snapped when we opened the box to put it together. We had to design the arrangement with large balls of floral foam on its arms so that the weight was distributed easily, and we then had to transport 10 of them to the venue. “This all took a few hours and it’s all done behindthe-scenes so the customer never sees. It’s all about the timing; we have to arrange the wedding delivery and set up the venue and church, alongside the day-to-day running of the shop. We have said we’ll never work with those candelabras again!” Every florist and every couple is different, so both Donna and Paul and the Good Florist Guide insist there’s room for every taste; whilst traditional tightlybound domes of roses might not suit the current ‘natural green’ zeitgeist, a good florist can cater to every taste and will meet and get to know brides and grooms in order to match unique designs with each personality. “We put so much of ourselves into every wedding; from the first consultation to sourcing the many different flower varieties, designing and then delivering, so we’re drained by the end of it all. But we really wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Have you always dreamed of a castle in Wales as the backdrop to your wedding? These are a few of the gorgeous castle venues where you can get hitched. By VICTORIA JONES. Wales boasts beautiful castles in abundance but finding one as a wedding venue can be a little tricky. But if a castle wedding in Wales has always been a dream for you, then we found seven stunners to help inspire you. Some allow you to have just the ceremony while others let you have the whole day there.

CASTELL COCH A vivid Victorian masterpiece with dazzling ceilings and Gothic architecture, Castell Coch is Wales’ ultimate fairytale wedding venue. This would suit couples who are after a more intimate wedding venue. Ceremonies take place in the vaulted drawing room under the gaze of the statues of the Three Fates and surrounded by characters from Aesop’s Fables, which adorn the walls.

Photo: Sue Hasker/Flickr/ Creative Commons CHIRK CASTLE The castle near Wrexham was completed in 1310 during the reign of the conquering Edward I and its many occupants have left behind lavish interiors and a beautiful and eclectic collection.

The drawing room is available for civil wedding and civil partnership ceremonies only and holds a maximum of 30 people. There are no facilities for a reception or a function. Where: Tongwynlais, Cardiff Visit the Cadw website for more information. Photo: Guy Fletcher

RUTHIN CASTLE The North Wales castle’s history dates back to 1277 when Dafydd, brother of Prince Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, created the castle for King Edward I of England in return for his help during the invasion of North Wales.

You can choose between the graceful splendour of the castle’s chapel and the rustic charm of the hawk house for your wedding.

It was sold at auction in 1960 and converted into a hotel, which now has 4* rating on Trip Advisor.

Situated in the historic castle courtyard, the chapel is packed full of historic features and licensed for up to 80 guests.

With 54 bedrooms, the guest rooms blend the original era of the castle with modern comfort and Ruthin Castle also has a restaurant and spa.

The Hawkhouse is a perfect garden ceremony venue, depending on weather, and is licensed for up to 50 guests.

The castle is licensed for civil marriages for up to 140 guests, can hold wedding receptions for up to 120 guests and also can put on marquee locations and medieval themed receptions.

Where: Chirk, Wrexham.

Where: Ruthin, North Wales.

FONMON CASTLE Built by the St. John family c1200, this fortified medieval castle has only changed hands once. The castle is fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and it can also be used for wedding receptions. Where: Vale of Glamorgan. Visit the website www.fonmoncastle.com. CRAIG-Y-NOS CASTLE

Beauty Wedding Timetable The Ultimate

Make sure you glow on your wedding day with LAURA DAVIES’ top tips laura.davies@trinitymirror.com

Six months before Up your skincare game: If you aren’t already, get into the habit of skincare and be strict. Eat well and incorporate a simple bedtime regime of cleansing, toning and moisturising to keep skin in top form and reduce the risk of breakouts. Start exercising: Exercising is not just important for getting in shape but also for reducing stress. Try yoga to increase posture strength and relieve tension. You’ll be looking and feeling great both inside and out.

Four months before

Looking after your locks: If you want to experiment with hair colour or style, now’s the time to do it. It will give a new colour time to grow out and fade and you the chance to get used to your new look.

Three months before Book consultations: If you’re getting your make-up professionally done, test the water by consulting with a few different make-up artists. Once you’ve found ‘the one’, book early to avoid missing out. Do the same with your hairdresser. If you’re sticking with your regular stylist, get your pre-wedding trial run booked in and any other appointments you need ahead of the big day. Experiment with fake tan: You don’t want to have a streaky fiasco on the big day so leave yourself plenty of time to get your bridal golden glow. Think about the neckline of your dress and any existing tan lines you’ll need to even out. Teeth whitening: Get into a home teeth-whitening routine to get perfect pearly whites. Don’t leave this to the last minute, it’s best to build it up and factor in sensitivity to achieve a winning wedding day smile.

One month before Trial run: When it comes to make up we all know that the ideas in our heads don’t always look the same once executed. Now is the time to buy the products you’d like and trial them out. Ask for samples from beauty counters to give them a test run before you buy. Hair practice: Having a hair practice before the big day is a must. Head to the salon armed with your headdress so your stylist can make recommendations on the best look. Get eyebrows shaped: Leave plenty of time for getting eyebrows shaped professionally. This will leave enough time to grow them out in places if needed. Treat your face: Time to start making your skin glow. Book in for a facial or start using facemasks at home. Don’t be tempted to do it right before the wedding incase you have a reaction. Cut down on tea and coffee: A strict detox isn’t necessary but cutting down on tea and coffee will reduce staining your teeth and flush your body of caffeine.

Two weeks before

Exfoliate and moisturise: To get those silky soft elbows, hands and feet, start an exfoliating and moisturising treatment once or twice a week. Drink water: Staying hydrated is the cheapest and easiest beauty trick in the book. Aim to drink one and half litres of water a day for clear glowing skin.

One week before

Bikini wax and shave legs: Make sure everything is silky smooth for your bikini on the honeymoon. Splurge on a massage: There’s a lot of pressure the week leading up to the wedding so treat yourself to a relaxing massage with your maid of honour. It will relax your muscles and increase circulation.

One day before Pack an emergency make-up kit: Get all your essential make-up for touch ups packed and give it to a trusty bridesmaid. Get mani-pedi done: You’ll be too excited to sit patiently and wait for your nails to dry on the big day so make this one of the last things you do the night before. Have a soak: Time to switch off and unwind in the tub. Let those pre-wedding stresses melt away. Try adding some essential oils for luxuriously soft skin the next day.

8-10 hours sleep They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing so get a good night’s rest for the big day.

Bride

It’s all in the detail

Three important design musts to follow when dressing your venue

1. SIMPLE DETAILS WORK BETTER THAN BOLD STATEMENTS... If the layout of your room includes round tables, ivory tablecloths, seat covers and napkins will complement the backdrop of the venue, and the details on each table, in an elegant manner. Colour is quite often regimented on wedding days, so it is the extra detail that makes a room come alive. These details come in the form of extra decor like flowers, ornaments and, of course, the table centrepieces. These details can be lost if you choose bright and bold coloured tablecloths and seat covers. Remember, a blank canvas is better to add colour to than one that has already been painted.

2. IF YOU HAVE A THEME, STICK TO IT... Vintage themes are all about renewing the old and bringing life to forgotten decorative gems. It looks out of place to add contemporary decorations to a vintage theme. So, while it may be tempting to include that digital photo frame or centrepiece inspired by modern art, always have your theme at the front of your mind. Attention to detail is an overused saying in wedding planning – however when

settling on a specific theme it is undoubtedly an important concept. Most venues have in-house teams of experienced events planners, with key contacts and amazing wedding suppliers to help you with your day.

3. CENTREPIECES SHOULDN’T BE EXACTLY THE SAME... Typically at wedding receptions your guests will spend a lot of time sitting at their table. So it makes sense to take a lot of time and attention in choosing the right decoration. For a vintage wedding, a clear colour palette of muted pinks, whites and purples looks nice, especially for the flowers. It works well if everyone’s table is different and has its own unique centrepiece while still befitting the style. It means the room will not look regimented, with each table looking exactly the same, but has many points of interest for your guests and provides each group with their own dining experience.

It’s all about the

PLANNING LAURA DAVIES looks at planning your dream day from choosing your dress to deciding on your cake

laura.davies@trinitymirror.com

@LawsDx

Organising a wedding can be pretty stressful, take it from me! But with proper planning, organisation and time management you can achieve the day of your dreams. You will no doubt think, where do I start? My biggest tip would be to get a wedding journal to jot down your ideas, head to a few wedding fairs for some inspiration and once you know exactly what you want – book it! Although don’t book on a whim or under pressure as it could cost you a lot of money in the long run. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy! It can actually be fun..

DRESSES

It is one of the most important focal points of a wedding and, for the bride, something that has been thought about carefully for a number of years. This is why the wedding dress needs to be one of the first things any bride-to-be needs to consider. The key with the wedding dress is to start planning as early as possible. A lot of people may want to leave it as late as they can – perhaps to give themselves plenty of time to lose weight – but this isn’t a good idea. Dresses can be altered along the way, so it’s best to get your dream gown ordered early. As the bride is the most important part of this magical day, it is always best to choose thewedding gown first as it allows you to then select colours, themes, flowers, cakes and bridesmaid’s dresses. Start by booking an appointment at your local wedding dress retailer and gather ideas about what kind of dress you want. You could even gather pictures and ideas from wedding magazines for inspiration and to show what you want. Even though you may have preconceived ideas of how you see your dream dress, it is always best to be open-minded. This is where the sales assistants’ expertise come into play, as they can tell you

Planning Your Wedding.indd 1

what shades suit your skin tone and hair colour. They will advise you on which dresses complement your figure with folds of silk, drapes of chiffon and fabrics that are cleverly cut to hide your problem areas and enhance your best features.

BRIDESMAIDS Weddings can be a very stressful time for all involved, especially the bride and groom. But luckily, there is help at hand for the bride – bring on the bridesmaids. In the months leading up to the wedding, while other guests concern themselves with shopping for outfits and gifts, the bridesmaids will be juggling your increasingly busy calendar. You need to schedule time for the bridesmaids’ dress shopping and fittings. The bridesmaids may also be on-hand for some honest advice on your own wedding dress choices.

ACCESSORIES When people think about the bride’s outfit, they think of the dress, which is probably the biggest focus of all. But aside from this, the bride needs to think about accessories that will make a subtle difference, but give her whole outfit that finishing touch. Let’s start from top to bottom and talk about accessories for the hair. A lot of women go for the traditional option of wearing a veil, which is a fantastic way to dress-up your bridal outfit. This can often be bought from the boutique where you get your dress. If you’re having a summer or indoor wedding then sling-backs and sandals are a great way to stay cool. The benefit of a sling-back is toes are hidden and a pedicure is one thing fewer to worry about. Sandals will ensure your feet feel less cramped, although consider that string- strap styles may dig in. If you go for sandals, make sure you do have a pedicure and use extra strength nail varnish to reduce the risk of breaking or chipping nails.

CAKES Along with saying the words “I do”, another picture-perfect moment on the wedding day has to be cutting the cake. Choosing what kind of cake to have can be a difficult task and these days, there are so many options to choose from. Years ago, the cake would have most probably been a tiered one, in white icing, with a rich fruit interior. This would have been a traditional option – and most probably would have had a miniature bride and groom stood on the top. But now, nostalgia goes right out of the window and people can choose pretty much anything for their wedding cake.

FLOWERS A beautiful bride in a stunning dress needs only one more thing to complete the perfect picture – and that’s flowers. For many brides, choosing the flowers can be as daunting as choosing the wedding attire – and when you consider

the selection available, it’s perhaps no wonder. Stunning tropical flowers, subtle white blooms, elegant lilies and, of course, romantic red roses are just the start of it. One of the first things you need to consider is your colour scheme. The colour of the flowers is vital as it will complement your whole wedding theme. The flowers will decorate the venue, match the bridesmaids’ dresses and ushers’ outfits and also be part of the all- important bridal bouquet.

GROOMS Who’s ever heard of a wedding without a groom? Make sure you don’t allow your very significant other to get left out of the marriage preparations, especially when it comes to “grooming” him for the big day. With all the excitement of a wedding, there’s often one very important person who gets overlooked when it comes to planning outfits for the big day. Without the groom, the wedding wouldn’t go ahead, but with all the fuss over the bride and her dress, he often gets left in her shadow. As much as people like to make out men take very little time to get ready and choose an outfit, they don’t. And especially not when it comes to their wedding suit.

RINGS The wedding ring is designed to be a symbol of your eternal love for each other – so it’s not something to leave until the last minute and then make a hurried decision over. Weddings and rings go hand-in-hand. Nearly every culture uses a ring of some sort to signify marriage – not that the ring is always placed on a finger. In some parts of the world, rings are placed around ankles or necks at the time of marriage.

PHOTOGRAPHY Your wedding day will be the happiest day of your lives and you want to make it picture perfect. Wedding photos may be passed through families and looked at for years to come. The wedding photographer plays a key role in assisting in the co-ordination of the whole day’s events, so you must choose yourwedding photographer carefully. Their photographic skill and style are obviously paramount, but so are their interpersonal and organisational skills.

HONEYMOON The average couple’s honeymoon used to consist of an exotic beach holiday with the usual package of sun, sea, sand and – being a honeymoon – a little something else! But an ever-increasing number of newlyweds are now looking to make their honeymoon more of an adventure by trying something completely different .And that trend is snowballing, according to travel experts, who claim honeymooners are seeking far more extraordinary d estinations with popular options ranging from orang-utan viewing in Borneo to catamaran cruising in the Seychelles.

How they did it REAL COUPLES, REAL WEDDINGS... Charlotte (Nurse Education Officer NHS) & Jack Evans (Electrician) Where did you get married? Hensol Castle Tell us about your engagement? I took Jack away for his birthday in July 2014 to York so as in my eyes the whole weekend was supposed to be about him I had no suspicions of what he was actually planning. Jack proposed to me in our hotel room as he knew I wouldn't have liked it being public. He made the room all romantic with rose petals & champagne and went down on one knee, I was overwhelmed. The ring was beautiful and was specially made for me which made it extra special. How long did the day take to plan? The day took the whole two and a half years to plan. We wanted to get a venue booked as soon as possible to allow us to budget for the day. We spread out the planning as much as we could. I was very to the book sticking the all the time scaled I read in magazines doing things in the order that everyone recommended How did you decide on the venue? Hensol Castle was not our first choice. We went to view the castle before it had its refurbishment. At that point the main function room was a marque we didn’t think it would be practical. So we had originally booked our date in the Celtic Manor. A few months later we attended a wedding fair in the castle and I fell in love with it straight away when I saw it newly refurbished. I had to persuade Jack to come and look at the venue and he too thought it was amazing and within a short period we had made the decision we wanted to get married there.

Tell us about the big day… “I stayed at my mums the night before the wedding and Jack at our house. My morning was very much the traditional bridal morning, we had a mac makeup artist Dominique come to the house who did myself, my two bridesmaids and my mum as well as a little bit of glitter for the flower girl. We also had a hair dresser Blaise from a local hair salon Marooned Cowbridge, who did all our hair. I couldn't fault either and would highly recommend them. I was a very indecisive bride changing my mind on how i wanted my hair less than a week before the wedding and to be able to have complete trust them both was such a relief. We couldn't have asked for better weather with it being a December day, beautiful blue sky which enabled me and my dad travel to the wedding in a VW Beetle with the roof down. Arriving at the castle I was greeted by Des who was going to be our toast master this was the first of many surprises. Des being our toast master had a really sentimental value as 27 years ago he was the toast master at my parents wedding. Me being the suspicious bride I was, I’d previously asked my parents about the toastmaster they had for their wedding and they threw me off the scent by telling me he was dead! Walking down the aisle was emotional for both me and jack with tears in both our eyes. I wrote my own vows for the ceremony as it is something I always had my heart set on. Jack is a bit more of a private person with his emotions and I didn’t need him to express his feelings in front of 80 people to know how he felt. From the ceremony onwards the whole day was a fantastic blur. We had a festive arrival drink of mulled wine... not that we managed to have any as we didn't seem to stop talking to our guests or smiling for photo. Saying our jaws ached is an understatement! We had both already seen what the venue was going to look like as we had spent the day before the wedding setting it up ourselves, the only surprise we had was our cake. We had struggled all along with making a decision with the cake due to the date of the wedding- it was the first working day after Christmas.. Meaning either cake companies were not open or charging premium prices. My dad, who works within hospitality and has done, for many years, told me to leave it with him and that’s what we did. We knew nothing about the cake till the wedding day. It was a six layer cheese wedding cake. It was incredible and we were shocked the find out my dad had designed the whole thing himself- it was a lovely personal touch and another amazing surprise. Our photographer Andy had an incredible venue to work with and he was sure to get the best photos he could, and because of the weather we were able to take full advantage of Hensol castle grounds. It was like a clear summer day (well a very cold one). Andy was a brilliant photographer and really easy to work with, he made us feel very comfortable taking photos which was great as neither of us are the posing type. 54

Thanks to Jacks parents we had a crèche running during the day to keep all the children occupied this was run by Kate Wheeler. We were not sure if we were making the right decision having a crèche as it would mean our daughter wouldn't be with us for the majority of the day however looking make now it was the best decision we could of made. It kept all seven of the children at the wedding occupied through all the parts they would find boring and it meant we could relax and enjoy our day without having to worry about Millie.

things we booked along with a photo booth from funky fountainswas a blast everyone had it is so funny to be able to go back through everyone’s photos after the wedding in the photobook you get and to see everyone’s drunken poses! The baileys fountain went down a treat with not one chocolate cup left to have, having them both there really got people talking and having a laugh which was something we wanted we didn’t want everyone just sat down and not enjoying themselves!!

One final surprise from my dad was magician Phil Jay. He was there after the ceremony and during the wedding breakfast, Phil was simply outstanding and left everyone gobsmacked after performing. It really was a nice icebreaker to have him at the wedding going around tables during the breakfast performing.

As we had the cheese wedding cake, the food in the evening had been organised to be a cheese and pate table accompanied by a hog roast. All the food was delicious according the everyone else I think between us we had a bite of a pork role and a cracker or two- there is simply just not enough time to get round everyone, we saw people leave that we didn’t even know had arrived.

We had speeches from both fathers, best men (Jack had two) and a short speech from both me and Jack. This was another emotional part of the day with not a dry eye in room. We were both looking forward to the evening reception as we could finally relax and enjoy ourselves with the formalities out the way! (the main thing I was looking forward to was taking my shoes off after the first dance due to not breaking in my shoes before the wedding I was about 2 boxes of plasters down by the end of the day!) The evening reception was even more of a blur than the day this was probably not helped by the unlimited about of drinks we were bought! We had amazing 5ft J&C letters from written in lights which looked beautiful lit up in front the castles starlight backdrop. We decided not to have a love band play in the evening and we entrusted Jeff Williams at Silverfox Entertainment and events to be our DJ, as a friend of the family and the DJ at my 10th birthday party we thought it would a lovely gesture to have him DJ at our wedding. After seeing a baileys fountain at a wedding fair it was one of the first

Our first dance was to John Legend’s All of Me, it was always a song close to me and jack and we never had any doubts to what song we wanted to use, this was a real intimate family moment for us as our daughter joined us half way through and it was just a lovely way to end such a brilliant day. As my dad had arranged so many surprises for me I had one for him, I wanted us to enjoy a moment together after such a hectic day so I had asked to have a father Daughter dance allowing me a few minutes to enjoy being with my dad and some time for Millie to dance with Jack, we danced to “I loved her first” by heartland and if you have ever heard the song the lyrics simply day it all. We stayed in the Vale’s wedding suite that night where we were welcomed by a lovely bottle of bubble and a lovely gift of champagne classes off Natalie our wedding coordinator. Natalie was brilliant the whole way through planning our wedding nothing was too much trouble for her and I really am grateful for her helping have the most perfect day.”

How did you choose your outfits? My dress was the first wedding dress I saw at a wedding fair and I fell in love straight away. I booked to go and try it on at my local bridal shop Sentiments in Talbot green to following week. My mum way wary of buying my dress over a year in advance as she knew has indecisive I am and as we had already changed our minds with the venue she didn’t want me to me make the same mistake, but I tried on others and nothing matched up to that allure dress. I was lucky I did order it so far in advance as it wasn’t till the following September did it arrive from America. My tiara was my something borrowed from my childhood friend and my dad’s god daughter Charlotte who got married in the August, it was a pleasure being able to wear such a beautiful tiara. Jack new he wanted him and his groom’s men in navy suites and finally settled for suites from Jeff Banks. Him and his younger brother Harry wore lovely handmade waistcoats and cravats made by Jack’s mum. The rest of the groom’s parts wore navy waistcoats and ties as Jack wanted him and Harry to be slightly different and to stand out. Your favourite moments... One of jacks favourite moments was seeing me and Millie walking down the aisle and her carrying a sign carrying a sign saying “Daddy her comes Mummy” followed by my personal vows to him. He was also very impressed with the Phil the magician as it was something Jack has always said he would of liked at the wedding. Mine was probably seeing Jack tear up as I was walking down the aisle as he was so adamant he wasn’t going to! I also really enjoyed listening to my dad’s speech as it had some personal touches which were really lovely to hear. My last was being able to share our first dance with Millie as a family as it was such a precious moment. What were some of your favourite special touches? I think I covered that telling you about our day How did spend your honeymoon? We went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for our honeymoon, only for 7 nights as Millie stayed at home to allow us some time to ourselves. We stayed in Sensatori Punta Cana and it was a magical honeymoon. We swam with dolphins and went mud buggying. The weather was fabulous and was the perfect honeymoon destination!

gorgeous outdoor wedding venues in Wales that are better than going abroad

A wedding outside? In Wales? Buy yes, it really is possible, as these gorgeous wedding venues show. VICTORIA JONES reports...

1

Have you always imagined your wedding day in the great outdoors? We’ve found some gorgeous venues around Wales which will let you do that. We’ll leave you to check the formalities of signing the register as not all of them will let you say “I do” outside, but all of these pretty venues have an outdoor element.

WELSH GREEN WEDDINGS | CARMARTHENSHIRE Welsh Green Weddings is a family-run business on a small Carmarthenshire organic farm. They say they offer individual, sustainable and relaxed weddings catering for 2 to 125 people. Outside weddings are an option in their licensed pagoda and receptions of 50 or more guests take place in their locally made giant tipi. They welcome small ceremony-only affairs, same-day weddings, renewals of vows as well as larger celebrations over the course of a weekend where more than 50 guests can be accommodated on the farm.

The venue offers the chance to have civil weddings under a refurbished former 19th century railway bridge from the Ruabon to Barmouth line.

A full bar of organic wine and sparkling wine, local Welsh beers and ciders, locally grown and sourced food, tree-planting ceremonies and our own horse and cart transport for the bride and groom are all on offer.

Visit Tower Hill Barns’ website for more information.

JABAJAK | WHITLAND Jabajak holds a civil ceremony license that enables indoor or outdoor ceremonies. Previously a working farm and stables, Jabajak has been converted and restored into a five-star restaurant with bed and breakfast accommodation, set within a vineyard. Visit the website for more information.

BODNANT GARDEN | NEAR COLWYN BAY The beautiful gardens will feature in your nuptials but if the weather isn’t great, your wedding party will be under cover. The iconic Pin Mill building on the Canal Terrace was originally built in 1730 in Gloucester and this will be the setting for the ceremony. It can hold a maximum of 60 seated guests and they are free to mingle on the lawn before and after the ceremony. Visit the website for more information.

LLYS MEDDYG | PEMBROKESHIRE

FFOREST FARM | PEMBROKESHIRE

This venue specialises in intimate weddings with a bespoke feel and those behind it say they “know how to get a good atmosphere going” with a festival vibe.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, informal, weekend-long celebration with family and friends, then this is the one for you. The beautiful 200 acres of the camp and farm is all yours for the weekend. They hold a licence for intimate civil ceremonies in the lodge, Bwthyn or garden pavilion. The giant hat tipis seat 80 to 150 guests for a personalised humanist wedding celebration.

One of their specialities is marinated and barbecued local Preseli lamb and other meats on their outdoor grill. The legal bit has to take place under cover but lots of the wedding is outside and with their garden extension they can now cater for weddings for up to 150 people. Visit llysmeddyg.com for more information.

Also forming part of fforest, in this secret courtyard you’ll find a Tafarn Smwglin bar and giant tipi bringing you all the pleasures of an outdoor wedding, in a beautiful riverside setting, with the convenience of being in Cardigan town centre.

On a dry summer’s day you can have your ceremony under the rose arch or a gazebo (but you will need to complete the formalities of signing the register with your witnesses).

They are licenced to hold civil ceremonies and have several sites listed within their licence. Two are within the main house and two within the Stables. Real life wedding Joanne Richards and Leigh Reece Joanne Richards, 30, a Customer Assistant, and Leigh Reece, 36, a Childcare Officer, are from Gorseinon and tied the knot at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea. JESS HAMMETT speaks with the bride… How did the proposal happen? It was on Christmas morning, six years before we got married. My first-born gave me a card, and it said: ‘Mammy, will you marry daddy?’ inside it. It was very sweet! Where did you get married? Was it difficult to choose a venue? Our ceremony and reception was held at the National Waterfront Museum. We viewed a couple of venues; but we knew when we saw the Museum that it was what we wanted. It had a party atmosphere, with a big room, and they put up beautiful lights. It suited us perfectly. How would you describe your wedding theme? We had a 1920s vintage style to our wedding. I loved the creativity involved in the planning; I was in my element. We collected a lot of jars, and found decanters in a charity shop in Newton Road in Mumbles. We filled 80

|

these with foliage and used them as table decorations. Our florist was a lovely lady called Merle who works from her home on a farm in Three Crosses. I made signs that were placed around the venue, saying messages like: ‘love is sweet, please take a treat’. We sourced an oldfashioned display cabinet and filled it with miniature drinks, and we bought an old bureau for a guest book table. Our wedding invites were a template I bought and downloaded from Etsy. Tell us about your wedding dress… Because of our budget, I originally wanted something from the high street. But then I tried on my first dress in Samantha K’s Bridal, and I knew it was the one. The following day I went around all the shops in Swansea, but nothing compared to the first dress I tried! It is beautiful. Did you have bridesmaids? I had one bridesmaid, my friend Emma. She’s

a friend from college, and we’ve known each other since we were 18. I was a bridesmaid at her wedding three years ago. I made her a wooden hanger, and the metal part had been bent into the word ‘bridesmaid’, and a tag read: ‘Emma, will you be my bridesmaid?’ Leigh had a best man, Michael, and he was also a best man for his wedding. Tell us about your beauty prep on the day – did you have a hairdresser or make-up artist? In the morning Emma and I went to Personal Image in Gorseinon, and had our hair done. Emma and I went back to the house where Sophie Walters did our makeup. It didn’t take us long to get ready. I was so relaxed, everyone was shouting at me because I was doing the dishes! What was your favourite moment? Probably walking down the aisle, following our two little boys. The whole ceremony was

fantastic. As it was 4:30pm in November, it was dark outside, and the fairy lights indoors made it really atmospheric. Did you have a hen / stag party? I went to Bath on my hen weekend with 10 others. We went to the Bath Spa, it was nice and relaxing! Leigh went to Dublin for his stag. How important was photography for your big day? Photography was very important. We wanted to go with more of an unusual name, and when I looked at Will’s website, his portfolio sold him straight away! We were really happy with the photographs. Will did exactly as we asked. We didn’t want formal posed photographs, and he was really good at mingling with guests. Loads of them asked if he was a family friend! He was laughing along with everyone, and getting involved. He was just brilliant!

Did you have a honeymoon? We went to Tenby for a weekend without the kids. It happened to be an annual blues festival, so we had a casual weekend listening to great music! In hindsight is there anything you would have done differently? Any advice for brides to be? I wouldn’t have done anything differently - I loved it. In hindsight, I would probably have had a videographer, to capture even more memories. But our photographer caught it all perfectly. My advice to brides would be: just take it all in and enjoy.

Flight oF Fancy...

The wedding has taken months of organisation. You’ve had a tense discussion with your new husband about the ‘astronomical’ cost of the flowers. And you’ve had to endure more than one dance with great uncle Alfred. It’s no wonder you need a honeymoon to recover from ‘the greatest day of your life’. So now it’s time for you to disappear completely and relax as a couple - while you try to shake all that confetti from your hair. Whether it’s Bora Bora or Bangor, couples are determined to head off on honeymoon, no matter how hard they have already been hit in the pocket. And two weeks of lazing on a beach no longer cuts it as the ultimate romantic trip. Many couples who can’t afford to splash out on a fortnight’s trip are instead looking up special deals or even going on ‘minimoons’ - short trips close to home with a twist of the unusual. Looking to create a unique honeymoon? PETER SLEE picks out some alternative after-thewedding experiences you should consider...

NORTHERN SCANDANAVIA AURORAL ZONE Reasoning: As the sun has now entered the declining stage of its solar cycle, ‘in-theknow’ Aurora hunters will be increasingly focused on more isolated places to seek out the lights. It’s not about just being in The Zone, but also knowing exactly which spot will deliver the best view of the Northern Lights. Destinations such as Abisko, Harriniva, Lyngenfjord and Menesjärvi provide wilderness, culture and wildlife as well as wonderful winter activities – think husky safaris, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Sample package: Harriniva - Best of the Northern Lights with The Aurora Zone* (01670 785 012; www.theaurorazone. com) costs from £1,515 pp (two sharing) and includes seven nights’ half-board accomodation, activities, aurora alerts, cold-weather clothing, transfers and flights (Gatwick).

Reasoning: Tate St Ives reopens on 31 March after extensive refurbishment and a new gallery extension which has doubled the exhibition space. The iconic art gallery by the sea, which overlooks pretty Porthmeor Beach and has been closed since October 2015, reopens with The Studio and the Sea, an exhibition exploring the ceramics studio, the ocean and the landscape through speciallycommissioned work, films, sculptures and large-scale paintings. Sample trip: Aspects Holidays (01736 754 242; aspectsholidays.co.uk) has over 300 properties in the coastal town of St Ives. Stay at 9 Piazza, a light and airy apartment with views over Porthmeor Beach, just 90 metres from Tate St Ives A week’s stay costs from £188 pp (£564 total). Fly to Cornwall Airport Newquay from various UK cities from £24.99 one-way with FlyBe (www.flybe.com).

*PAPHOS, CYPRUS Reasoning: A European Capital of Culture for 2017, Paphos has both a rich history and a surprisingly diverse contemporary culture. Mythical location for the birth of Aphrodite, the city has an archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Site, remarkable Roman mosaics and a castle with an impressively turbulent history to explore. The theme for 2017’s events is ‘An Open Air Factory’ which plays on the tradition of outdoor performances, but also seeks to emphasise tolerance and cultural inclusion, and features a packed schedule of musical, theatrical and artistic events. Sample trip: Sunvil* (020 8758 4758; www. sunvil.co.uk) offers a three-night short break from £746 pp (two sharing) at the two star Axiothea Hotel in March. The price includes return flights from Gatwick, B&B and car hire.

THE AZORES Reasoning: The Azores is more accessible than ever before now that easyJet and Ryanair have recently introduced flights to São Miguel. With nine volcanic islands resembling Tolkien’s ‘middle-earth’ scattered in the North Atlantic, The Azores is like Costa Rica, England, Hawaii and colonial Portugal rolled into one - just a 3.5 hour flight away. Visit in May and June when flowers such as vibrant blue and pink hydrangeas are in full bloom and whale watching and swimming with dolphins are just some of the many bucket-list experiences. Sample trip: The Azores: A Volcanic Wonderland with Artisan Travel* (01670 785 085;www.artisantravel. co.uk) costs from £1,315 pp (two sharing) and includes seven nights’ accommodation, most meals, guided activities and return flights. Departures from May to September 2017.

JAPAN Reasoning: Enticingly delivered to the nation’s living rooms this autumn by one of the UK’s favourite presenters, ITV’s ‘Joanna Lumley’s Japan’ travels to some of this multi-faceted country’s most intriguing spots, inevitably prompting travellers to plan their own journey to The Land of the Rising Sun during 2017. Sample trip: Ffestiniog Travel* (01766 772 030; www.ffestiniogtravel.com) offers ‘Japan – A Land of Discovery’, an 18-day escorted tour - new for 2017 - that takes in three of Japan’s main islands, combining spectacular sightseeing with an array of tram and train journeys, plus a visit to the newly opened Kyoto Railway Museum. Departing 19 September 2017, the price is from £4,990 pp (two sharing) including flights (London), 14-day first class Japan Rail Pass, 16 nights’ B&B, welcome dinner, all rail journeys, excursions & transfers as per the itinerary, and the services of a tour leader from the UK plus a local guide in Japan. One overnight flight.

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA Reasoning: Following the success of last year’s acclaimed BBC adaptation of Tolstoy’s War & Peace, and with 2017 marking the centenary of the Russian Revolution, St. Petersburg is sure to rank highly on discerning travellers’ wish lists whether for a short city break or a longer, multi-centre itinerary that explores its fascinating past. Sample trip: Kirker Holidays* (020 7593 2283; www.kirkerholidays.com) offers tailor-made short breaks and cultural tours to Russia. A three-night stay at the four-star superior Angleterre Hotel in St. Petersburg costs from £998 pp (two sharing) including Russian visa, flights, private car transfers, accommodation with breakfast, and Kirker Guide

YUNNAN, SOUTH-WESTERN CHINA Reasoning: The remote mountainous region around Yunnan and along the route to Tibet has long been largely inaccessible to any but the most adventurous traveller. Now, the route is bejewelled by a string of beautiful lodges that enable travellers to traverse the region in style. Two new Songtsam Lodges will open this year - one in Lijiang and the other in Lhasa, further opening up the area. These lodges are built using traditional Tibetan methods, but with levels of style and comfort that provide oases within a towering, harsh but beautiful landscape. Sample Trip: TransIndus* (0844 879 3960; www.transindus.co.uk) offers The Songtsam Circuit Tour, an 11-day comfortable adventure – from £2,850 pp (two sharing), including 10 nights’ full-board accommodation at five luxury lodges, local transport and transfers, entry fees and an English-speaking guide. Flights extra.

CUBA

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL Reasoning: Now that the World Cup and Olympics are over, travellers are expected to head to Rio to experience the city for themselves. The city’s new Pier area, part of the Olympic regeneration, attracts tourists and locals alike to enjoy museums, restaurants and frequent exhibitions. Also, connecting more than 25 historical landmarks, the Conde Waterfront Park is Rio’s newest attraction. This regeneration project crosses the city’s oldest neighbourhoods and includes Paço Imperial, the Old Cathedral, Candelária Church, the

Olympic Pyre, Maua Square, Rio’s Art Museum and the Museum of Tomorrow within this 3km walk. Sample trip: Sunvil Latin America* (020 8758 4774; www.sunvil.co.uk) offers a 14-night Highlights of Brazil holiday with plenty of time to explore Rio, plus the delights of Iguaçu Falls, the Amazon and Salvador. The cost, from £3,939 pp (two sharing) includes 14 nights’ B&B, international flights (London), transfers, excursions and internal flights.

Reasoning: Last August saw the first regularly scheduled commercial flight from the United States land in Cuba since 1961, bringing with it the start of what is sure to be steadily increasing demand from North American leisure and business travellers over the coming years. UK tour operators are already reporting a pinch in the supply of available accommodation and associated price increases, making it more advisable than ever for UK travellers to visit Cuba’s historic highlights and natural attractions sooner rather than later. Sample trip: Voyages Jules Verne (020 3553 3722; www. vjv.com) offers a selection of escorted tours to Cuba including ‘Return to Havana’, an eight-night itinerary from £1,745 pp (two sharing) including direct Virgin Atlantic flights (Gatwick), transfers, seven nights’ B&B (four in Havana, two in Trinidad, one in Sancti Spiritus), seven dinners, excursions, and the services of guides and local reps. One overnight flight. Departures throughout 2017.

How they did it REAL COUPLES, REAL WEDDINGS... Rachel Morgan & Jonathon Richards Jonathon Richards and Rachel Morgan's big day was almost ruined when their wedding venue shut with just weeks to go. But out of adversity came triumph, as PETER SLEE found out

T

HEY were left heartbroken when they found out the wedding venue they had booked had suddenly shut down.

But Jonathon Richards and Rachel Morgan’s big day eventually still happened albeit in a different venue. The Swansea lovebirds had been due to get hitched in the city. But with just six weeks or so to go, they were told by its bosses that their dream venue would "not be able to fulfill" their wedding plans. They were devastated, having planned the wedding for nearly two years after Jonathon proposed on a holiday to the Grand Canyon in America in the summer of 2015. But Fairyhill, the five star hotel and wedding venue in Gower snapped up late last year by Oldwalls, saved the day when bosses there offered to accommodate their wedding with a helpful £5,000 discount thrown into the mix as well. Now the couple have tied the knot and held the ceremony there.

How they did it

Jonathon said they had felt both “devastated and worried” after their original venue suddenly shut without notice. “ We thought without that, we would not be able to get married. Places are booked years in advance. "But then Fairyhill saved the day," he said. "It was some mad twist of fate. We actually wanted to get married there in the first place, but it was a bit out of our price range. So to find ourselves in the position of getting married there after everything was amazing. "We are so grateful to the team there. Without their help, there wouldn't have been a wedding." Managing Director of Fairyhill by Oldwalls Andrew Hole said: “Fairyhill has long been regarded as a much loved property in Swansea and being in a position to offer the venue to Rachel and Jonathan following their unexpected shock was a privilege. A wedding is one of the biggest purchases you will make in your life and twe could only imahine how they felt when they heard their venue had fallen through. Instances like this make us realise just how important it is to offer the client quality and financial reassurance.” Pictures: Flashbulb Photography

perfect honeymoon spots in Wales you’ll never want to leave These romantic places to stay would be perfect for an extravagant honeymoon or a quieter mini-moon. By VICTORIA JONES. Anyone planning a wedding has a lot to think about, not least the honeymoon. And in recent years there has been a significant rise in couples going on “mini moons” where newlyweds can still enjoy a trip after the wedding, but perhaps

for a shorter time or smaller budget. We wanted those harder-to-find, more romantic places which would be perfect for a luxurious honeymoon or a quieter mini-moon. We have listed prices where possible.

WOOD SHACK | ABERGAVENNY Originally a writer’s cabin, the book, ‘The Man Who Made things out of Trees’ saw owner Rob cut down a native ash tree to discover just how many things could be made from it. The outside space is fantastic and includes a huge oak deck for lazing and lounging and there is also the relaxing hammock by the stream. Inside the shack there’s a cosy sofa for two, nestled by the wood burning stove and the kitchen has been handbuilt. The bedroom has a proper double bed. There is also a proper shower with hot and cold running water, as well as a basin and loo, with towels and soap included. Book with sugarandloaf.com.

WAYS TO GET THE You have booked the venue, you have ordered the dress, and the invites salon owner vicky jones about how to ensure your hair looks

For the bride getting gorgeous hair isn’t as easy as waking up and washing your hair, unlike the groom! It takes careful thought and preparation just like the rest of your wedding planning. If you are thinking of having a hair stylist on the day of your wedding, you need to pre-book in advance, have hair trials and go through a number of styles which will compliment your dress and the look you want to achieve. There’s plenty to do and it’s important that both you and your stylist know exactly what style you want for your big day. Vicky Jones, pictured, is owner of Unique Hair Design in Gorseinon, Swansea, and has had plenty of experience when it comes to bridal hair. Here she shares her top tips for ensuring you have beautiful hair on your wedding day.

Show and Tell When you attend your hair trial, make sure you bring anything you think will help your stylist understand the look you would like to achieve and perhaps give an indication about the theme of your wedding. Maybe bring in a picture of you in your wedding dress, a swatch of fabric a mood board of all your favourite styles and pictures of brides, celebrities, models—anyone whose look inspires you.

Enhance your Look. When you’re finding pictures to show your stylist, try to find ones that don’t stray too far from your own look and style. If you are the kind of girl who loves having her hair down and flowing, maybe you don’t want to go for a sleek up-do—and vice versa. Don’t stray away from the look you normally go for when you dress up for an occasion. You can always glam it up a bit for your wedding day.

Accessorize There are so many great hair accessories available now to add a gorgeous accent to your wedding hair. Your hair style may have to be altered due to your hair clip, veil or tiara. If you can bring in your accessory or something similar for your hair trial, your stylist can suggest a way to achieve your desired look incorporating your accessory.

Don’t be afraid to experiment or say how your feel The point of a hair trial is to give you the chance to live with a look and discover whether you feel comfortable with it. If your stylist suggests a look that you hadn’t considered before, don’t feel pressurised to follow their advice — but feel free to experiment while at their fingertips. And if you dislike something, don’t be afraid to say. It’s your day after all.

Extend yourself Don’t shy away from having hair extensions on your wedding day. Extensions are great if you want to create a little more length or volume. Make sure you give yourself enough time to get used to wearing them. They are also great if you are worried about your hair holding a particular style all the way through your wedding day. Even if your own hair falls, the extensions won’t.

WEDDING HAIR YOU WANT are out. now is the time to start thinking about you!. LAURA DAVIES speaks to swansea in top shape on your big day.

laura.davies@trinitymirror.com

@LawsDx

Regular haircuts You want your hair in good condition and in tip top shape. Therefore having regular trims is a good idea. If your hair is very long or unlayered, it can sometimes be difficult to manage and style it which can sometimes limit the look your stylist can show you at your trial.

But don’t get your hair cut just before the wedding! It is also important that you don’t do anything too drastic before your wedding day. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so avoid having a cut or colour too close to your wedding.

Look after those locks Makw sure you pay special attention to hair care in the weeks before your trial and wedding, so that your hair is shiny and healthy. If you’re unsure of the best products for your hair type, consult with your stylist.

Be product free on the day On your trial day and wedding day, have clean, dry hair. Avoid using a lot of conditioner that morning, especially a leave-in one. Ideally if you are wearing your hair up wash your hair the night before and pin it up on top of your head to avoid it getting greasy. Stay away from silkening products that weigh your hair down and make it slippery to work with.

Be flexible Say it rains or a wind suddenly springs up on your wedding day, and that down style you had your heart set on just isn’t working. Don’t worry—last-minute changes can be okay, so long as you and your artist are prepared. When you come in to Unique Hair Design for your trial, your stylist will show you a couple of styles and variations so that you have options on the day.

Timing Remember you stylist is not a miracle worker especially when timings are concerned. If you have a big party having your hair styled you may have an early start! It is surprising how fast your big day goes and if you are having a make-up artist as well it may be worth getting a rough timetable together so that neither party is rushed. This is not the day for any added nerves!

Enjoy This is your big day and the team at Unique Hair Design will gladly accommodate you and your hair needs. Whether you want the stylist/s to come to your home, a wedding venue or you would prefer to come into the salon, we can work around you with plenty of notice.

Real life wedding Alla Fisher-Silkina and Mark Fisher JESS HAMMETT speaks to Alla Fisher-Silkina, 37, a Bio-science Research Doctor originally from Crimea, and Mark Fisher, 42, a Project Manager from Swansea, about their wedding in St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Cardiff, followed by a reception at Margam Orangery. How did you meet? We met while holidaying in Swansea. Alla’s friend, Marina, wanted to go dancing, so Alla found a Salsa class, the same class Mark attended. After two weeks, mobile numbers were exchanged, the rest is history! How did the proposal happen? We were on holiday in Budva, Montenegro, and on the last day I knew I wanted to propose to Alla. A plan started to form, but how do you propose without a ring? During the day I went shopping and bought a bracelet. Technically it’s a ring, but for your wrist! E. Before going back to the apartment I suggested a walk through Budva’s Old Town. As we walked through atmospheric cobble stones streets, a series of magical events started. First some music began playing, so I took Alla by the hand and we started to dance in the street! When the music stopped 122 |

I noticed the stone archway to the beach right in front of us, with the moonlight shining onto the crashing waves. We stepped onto the sand, and I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. We then went ring hunting in London, when we returned to the UK! What type of wedding did you have, and what traditions are involved? We had a Orthodox Church wedding celebrated by three priests: one from the Cardiff Church (Father Iachovos), another from our church in Swansea (Father Luke), and Mark’s Godfather (Father Mark). It was a beautiful fusion of both the Greek and Russian traditional Orthodox services. The bride and groom are betrothed, crowned as heads of their new family and a procession to take their first journey together. It is tradition in Crimea that the groom does not meet the bride at the church, but has to

undergo the ‘Ransom’. The groom arrives with the best man at the bride’s house, and the bride’s family and bridesmaids will have prepared a series of tasks for the groom, such as: finding her lips in a collage of many lips, singing a love song, or identifying important dates in her life. If the groom fails to complete any of the challenges to the bridal party’s satisfaction, he will have to pay a ransom of chocolate coins to gain another chance. Of course, the entire event is played out purely for the amusements of the bridesmaids, so some of the games of chance do not work in the Groom’s favour! After the ransom has been ‘paid’, the parents reunite the bride with the groom and the couple head off to the church together for the wedding ceremony. Where did you get married, and was it difficult to choose a venue? We got married at St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Cardiff, followed by the reception

at Margam Orangery. It was incredibly difficult as there are a number of beautiful locations around Swansea; However, Margam Orangery had a close personal connection to us, as we had had a number of dates exploring Margam Park. The team were amazing. They were very friendly, accommodating and extremely professional, and they ensured the reception ran smoothly. They even added a few bonus touches to our day which we were not expecting, which made us feel very special! Having the wedding spilt over two venues proved challenging, but we hired a vintage double-decker bus to take our guests to the church and reception. How would you describe your wedding theme? We both have a passion for, and professional connection with, sea and marine life, so our colour scheme was blue and white. We wanted the wedding to be personal,

so together with small group of friends we planned the day and made table decorations. We were also extremely lucky that our friend, Marina, is a florist, so her wedding gift to us was the flower arrangements, and another friend is a cake maker, so we had a stunning three-tier wedding cake, with a separate layer for cutting and sharing. Tell us about your wedding dress Alla… There were two wedding dresses. The first was for the church, photographs and entrance to the reception. It was an ivory, lace and satin dress with a small train. I found this in Mumbles after visits to many shops in Swansea. The second dress was for the first dance, and it was an ivory, lace midi-dress, which allowed Mark and I to dance both the Tango and Salsa. Did you have bridesmaids? Yes, I had three bridesmaids: Ruth, Olga, and

| 123

Katia. Each are close friends from all over the world: Gran Canaria, Ukraine and Russia. I found their help totally invaluable. They made all the preparations and the wedding day go without a single fault. Although, Mark wishes they hadn’t made the ‘Ransom’ so difficult! Did you have best men? I had two best men: my brother, Matthew, who delivered a fantastic speech at the reception, and my friend, Aleksejs, who provided expert assistance in both the ‘Ransom’ and the church service. Tell us about your beauty prep on the day – did you have a hairdresser or makeup artist? All the prep took place at my house. It started at 6am when the hairstylist and photographers arrived. The hairstylist is a good friend of ours from our dance classes, and had been working with my hair for a long time, so she knew exactly how to style it! Once finished, my bridesmaid, Olga, did my make up. What was your favourite moment of the day? Our favourite moment was our first dance. We had meant to practice a routine weeks before, but due to all the running around organising we managed about 20 minutes practice, just before we performed it! We had met at a dance class, so there was a lot of pressure to deliver on the first dance! We danced to ‘To Tango tis Nefelis’ by Haris Alexiou. It’s a track that was playing during a very defining moment in our relationship so we knew it had to be the one we danced to. Did you have a honeymoon? Not yet - In lieu of presents our guests donated towards our honeymoon fund. We have planned Argentina to take some authentic Tango lessons, and the Maldives for some sun and relaxation. In hindsight is there anything you would have done differently? Any advice for brides to be? No, our day was perfect for us. The reason for this is that so many of our friends and family helped make our day personal and special. The photographer (Morgan James Photography), videographer, cake, limos and buses were supplied by Mark’s friends. The flowers, decorations, hair, makeup were all by Alla’s friends. Our tips would be to take time and find the right people to make your day personal to you. Plan the day and trust the professionals – if you choose the right people they know what to do. A professional photographer is essential to capture all the moments you miss during the day, and you can look back on them over your lifetime together. Finally, try and relax the days before the wedding day. It can be difficult with all the last minute prep, but if you can arrange a little spa session or massage to relax this will give you energy for the big day.

Real Life Wedding Debbie & Barrie Evans-Williams Photography ©Catherine Wiggins. www.weddingswalesltd.co.uk

Where: Oldwalls, Gower Hair: Kendall Make Up: Polished (by Terina Sian Pugh) Rings: Nicola Palterman Flowers: Forget me not Florist, Neath Photographs: Catherine Wiggins (WeddingsWalesLtd) Entertainment: Coverland, Dino Martini and Paul How did you and Barrie meet ? We bumped into each other at a charity event in February 2016. However we grew up in the same street in Neath and had gone to the same school but lost touch for a number of years. When did you get engaged ? Barrie and I went to Tenerife on holiday in October 2016 and unbeknown to me, the children had planned the proposal so it came out of the blue. It was very romantic. We were at sea on a yacht with dolphins and whales swimming alongside us. The crew discreetly went below deck and left us with a bottle of champaign. Barrie went down on one knee as the sun was setting and popped the question.

Did you decide then to make it a surprise wedding ? We were already planning a 50th birthday party for February so as the holiday progressed we came up with the idea of combining both celebrations. Why did you choose Oldwalls ? We had been to Oldwalls for a Cash for Kids event and adored the venue. The friendliness of the staff and their efficiency is exemplary. When we approached them about a birthday/ surprise wedding party, they loved the idea and embraced the planning with as much fun and enthusiasm as us. Tell us more… We wanted the day to be intimate with just over 30 of our family and friends. The service was conducted in the Oak Room at Oldwalls, followed with a blessing by the one and only Kevin Johns. Kev is a dear friend of ours and this helped to keep the ambiance of the day informal and relaxed. We enjoyed a five course meal after the ceremony. There we’re a few surprises during the day, even I didn’t know about the two

singing chefs who entertained us with their wonderful tenor voices. We spent time with our family and friends before the evening guests arrived. This is where it turned into a bit of a military operation. Over two hundred guests were arriving for what they believed to be a 50th birthday party. To throw them off the scent, birthday balloons and decorations were dotted about. The Oldwalls staff helped sneak the wedding party round the back of the venue so we could make a surprise entrance. Kevin Johns asked everyone to prepare to raise their glasses for a birthday toast when the curtain was raised to reveal the wedding party. There was a pregnant pause while people processed the fact I was standing there in a wedding dress ! That was followed by spontaneous applause, hugs and kisses. Did your birthday get a little lost in the wedding celebrations ? Not at all, at midnight Oldwalls laid on a firework display and our guests burst into singing me Happy Birthday. The next morning we decamped to Fairyhill for brunch as there are three of us who all have our 50th birthdays in February so a joint cake appeared.

Their paths kept crossing over the years and they become very good friends. In early 2014, they decided to see where their relationship could go – but Richard says it was “love at first sight”. The proposal Richard proposed to Cerris in 2015.

“It was completely out of the blue,” she said. “We had been on several city breaks throughout 2015, but he decided to propose in our living room. “He got down on one knee, and he was in tears. “He gave me this lovely speech of how I was the perfect girl for him and how much he wanted to marry me. “I could not believe it was happening – of course I said ‘yes’!”

The wedding “We walked down the aisle to Etta James’ At Last,” said Cerris. “My two best friends, and bridesmaids, Emma-Jane and Tania, walked me down the aisle. “I had booked the Love Actually Experience to make the day unforgettable. “The performers spent time mingling with guests before planting themselves in amongst our friends. “As we finished our kiss, All You Need is Love took over – they had all our guests standing and singing along. Everyone looked so relaxed and in the moment.” The honeymoon The couple went to Cuba – they spent four nights in Havana and 14 nights in Varadero.

TEN TYPES OF BRIDE Which type of Bride-to Be are you? LAURA DAVIES looks at 10 different types laura.davies@trinitymirror.com

| 145

1. THE BUDGET BRIDE She’s searched the internet for inspiration and everything from invitations to table decorations is DIY. She might have purchased her dress online or second hand and she’s been savvy throughout the planning. Most likely to: Make her own wedding cake to cut costs.

2. THE BRIDEZILLA A well-known type of bride due to her loud approach to absolutely everything. You’ll find her shouting at the caterers. Many wonder if she scared her husbandto-be into the marriage. Most likely to: Shout at her wedding planner.

3. THE ANTI-BRIDE Refusal to wear white and no meringue dress in sight, we’re not entirely sure why this bride is getting married. She goes against all of the typical wedding conventions and tells everyone about it. Most likely to: Elope to avoid the typical church wedding.

her wedding and her dress will be huge. She’ll also search for the most castle-like venue for her special day. Most likely to: Design her wedding based on a Pinterest board.

5. THE NERVOUS BRIDE She’s planning everything from day one and is constantly on the lookout for things that might go wrong. Her invitations are sent out earlier than necessary and she’s always checking something. Most likely to: Sigh with relief when she finally makes it down the aisle.

6. THE LAST-MINUTE BRIDE Less excitable than your typical bride, she’s always worryingly calm while others around her ask whether she’s selected her venue yet. She spends more time assuring people she’ll sort it later than she does organising the actual wedding. Most likely to: Wait until a week before to send out her invitations, if she has any.

7. THE FUN LOVING BRIDE 4. THE PRINCESS This type of bride spent years waiting for her Prince Charming and couldn’t be more excited that her dreams have come true. You’ll spot a lot of pink at

146 |

hitched

You might spot this bride getting married in Las Vegas and she certainly went overboard on her hen-do. This bride doesn’t take things too seriously and is the type to have an interesting themed wedding.

Most likely to: Show up in a bright coloured wedding dress and totally impractical shoes.

8. THE BRIDE WHO’S BEEN PLANNING FOR YEARS She started her Pinterest wedding board years before the engagement and knows exactly what she wants. She’s been planning her wedding since she watched her first Disney film. Most likely to: Plan the whole thing on her own.

9. THE PERFECTIONIST This bride has decided how her wedding will be and won’t let anything go wrong. Everything is researched and she can sometimes turn into bridezilla if things don’t go to plan. Most likely to: Have her whole wedding planned months earlier than everyone else.

10. THE SENTIMENTAL BRIDE Wearing her mother’s wedding dress, his grandmother’s engagement ring and stressing in case she’s forgotten to invite a family member, this bride’s all about making the occasion as special as possible. Most likely to: Cry before she’s even got her dress on.
