Forward Namaste Sampath Kumar garu, I have reviewed your English translation of JyotishaKalpalata, Somanatha's commentary on Jaimini Sutras. You have done a wonderful job and clearly translated Somanatha's valuable commentary. Also useful to students is the fact that you clearly identified where Somanatha was not decisive and left scope for interpretation. Your work adds a new perspective on the interpretation of Jaimini sutras that was not present in existing works of scholars of our age, such as Prof Sastri, Dr Raman, Pt Rath, Sri Iranganti and Sri Kambhampati. I am very pleased with this work and feel that it can contribute richly to the next generation of Jyotish researchers solving the puzzle of Jaimini Sutras. I thank you for your undertaking and hope that Indian and international Jyotish community welcomes this landmark work! Best regards, PVR Narasimha Rao -------Astrology & Spirituality Resources: http://www.VedicAstrologer.org --------
Thanks I convey my regards and blessings to Sri P.V.R Narasimha Rao Who kindly reviewed my translation God bless him with all prosperity Good Luck

Jyotisha Kalpalatā
Preface There are 5 un-published Sanskrit commentaries on “Jaimini” Sutras, the -Subodhini of Neelakantha commentery [published] is in great use, but this does not help to calculate Sign Dasas. Other [ un-published ] 5 commentaries like 1-Venkateswara’s, 2-Kṛṣṇamiśra’s, 3-RaghavaBhatta’s commentaries [1704 A.D] 4-Sutrartha Prakasika of Akumalla Narasimha Suri,5- Vivruti of Khetamkara Nrusimha Daivajna ....also much helpful for calculating the Dasas and predicting the events. Somanātha’s “Jyotisha Kalpalatā” great commentery {Bhāshya} is really a valuable and covered the all the 4 Chapters dealing with 1- Kāraka ; 2-Ascendant ; 3- Drekkāṇa and 4-Navāmśa respectively. He establishes his own views and traditional teachings has handed down orally. The last three quarters of the fourth chapter are not available even in manuscript. The available commenteries give the following number Sutras . Total aphorisms are 927 in four Chapters. The manuscript of Khetmakara Nrusimha Daivajna is a commentery on 3-4 chpaters. This does not agree with “ Somanātha’s” Kalpalatā.Ther are defferences even in aphorisms. All these unpublished Sanskrit commenteries are gathered by Sri Mathura KrishnaMurty Sastry garu with great effort and

expenditure. Our astrological students are ever indebted to his great service to the Jaimini system. In third chapter ,Kalpalatā contains-1-RajayogaLakshna;2-Determination of longevity and the Dasa givimg death;3-Exceptions and Lakshna;4Conception[ Garbha Varnana] In fourth chapter-about body..2-Results of Bhavas;3Women Lakshna;4-Birth of birds and animals. The Drekkāṇa princepal emphasised by Somanātha is missing here.Kalpalatā mentions 70 Dasas. The method of calculating these is said to be given in the “Mula Sāstra” by Kalidasa, which is not available now.Raghavabhatta described 12 Dasas for longevity . Kṛṣṇamiśra said 3 Dasas -1-Sri Dasa;2-Padanatha Dasa;3Padanadhamsa Dasa. Somanātha mentioned 6 Dasas in Kalpalatā 1- Drekkāṇa Dasa[Sign occupied by the lord of the 11th];2-Prakārāntara Daśā;3-Kheṭa Daśā; 4-Upakramarāśi Daśā;5-Nisargabheda Daśā;6-Nakṣatra Daśā. Scholars are given the importence to Padanāthāṃśa Daśā. After the keen verification of the “Kalpalatā”,some aphorisms are out of placed in the context. Somanātha’s view on Drekkāṇa and Navāṃśa are not clear. Somanātha added the commentery in 2 Stabakas [Bonquets] before starting the original text.40 Dasas explained in 2nd chapter- 11 Dasas for Rajayoga borns only. 5 Dasas refer to the rulers only [or Royal family births].
4 Dasas general Rajayogas for commen
people.Remaining are ordinary Dasas. In all horoscopes determine the position of Brahma and calculate the Brahma Dasa.”Jatha Jathaka Rajam” clearly mentioned the “Brahma” in an easy manner to find out the Brahma.

I added the“Sūtrās”also, in appropriate place in“Kalpalatā” commentery for easy understanding. I am very much glad and proud for this translation of “Jyotiṣa kalpalatā” in to English. I think it is much useful for all Jaimini students and scholars. Good Luck 07-01-2017 Rajamahendravaram

In this book , first chapter is the details of terms and Kārakas. Rajayogas are also depicted. In second chapter AscKāraka-longevity and Dasa period are described. In third chapter Drekkāṇa elaborated, because this is the esoteric chapter in Jaimini astrology. If you say “Navāṃśa is greater” that is not correct. Because it is more subtle than Navāṃśa. Drekkāṇa is not properly explained in Bruhajjataka. In this book we followed “Parivṛttitraya” Tricycle method. there is some special in this book. यॊितष

For Aries we should calculate from Aries –Tauruslike…..rgulerly. For Taurus calculate reversely. In division also there is some deference. For Aries trine, starting from Aries, for Taurus trine, starting from Virgo, for Gemini trine- starting from Libra, for Cancer trine- starting from Pisces. 12th division also like this. After that go to Hora calculation. Hora is five types. This is useful matter in lost or unknown horoscopes and in horary astrology. But in this book the first hora of Aries is Aries, second one is in Taurus, The first Hora of Taurus falls in Gemini and so on ..they proceed like this. This will be helpful in calculating Rajayoga and longevity. There is another kind in Hora, that is the house where the 8th lord is posited. यॊितष क पलताक पलता- नवीनाःतु वद7@त, तःयाः आयुदा-य वधाने उपयोगः |
