The armadillo’s scute and carapace embodies the ability to shield and shelter itself by means of an armour that is flexible enough to accommodate various bodily contortions. The proposal is a response to facilitate a platform accessible to the public, providing views to the shore and a reconceived canopy structure for the station. The armature’s structure is defined by a “universal” ball-joint detail that activates flexibility rather than mass customizing it.

Density and activity are generated on this corner site through a mix of multi-family residential units and a Brewpub/ Performance Theatre at grade. By methods of subtraction and perforation, the building acts as a material that supports, amplifies, and restricts flows of energy: sound, air, light, and people. This porosity culminates at the raised residential courtyard that overlooks the park while also mediating a level of transparency with the third place below it.

// atmospherics An ephemeral shelter along the Assiniboine River inspired by the formal and experiential qualities of a gas.
The shelter represents a frozen moment of a material undergoing a physical phase transition. Based on the primitive act of stacking wood, layers of variousshaped plywood are spaced apart by steel supports. The layers bend organically to suggest views between the interior and exterior, diffusing the light. Having a constantly shifting form, the shelter produces a varied and sensuous experience, instead of making a single iconographic statement. The overall intent speaks to the elemental and temporary nature of the river, working with its surroundings to create meaning. Involvement included research, conceptual development, design development, and majority of imagery suite.

//variable plaza A waterfront development including public space, infrastructure reuse and a mixed-use tower.
Severed by the Gardiner Expressway from the remaining city to the North, the design understands that it must engage community level objectives along the East-West axis in order to attract local interests. To create a successful public space the design uses a heuristic model of four primary considerations: public art, comprehensive edges, relevant programming, and flexible spaces to accommodate stable and periodic events. Involvement included conceptual development, design development, and majority of imagery suite.

Primary involvement in this project sought to employ simulations in Buildling Information Modeling platforms to improve project delivery methods. Through collaborating with this software, collisions were avoided, design options were cycled, phases were designated, and the client received the first of its BIM models for the purposes of facilities management. The value for users was expanded upon with branding opportunities where informationally generated art works were used to create visual play and strengthen identity of the spaces. Responsibilities included complete design and construciton package, and design of all artwork and imagery.

This low-impact rooftop addition functions as a gym but serves as a beacon for the college and a model for vertical campuses. NORTH-WEST DAYTIME PERSPECTIVE

With a burgeoning student population concentrated into a small footprint, George Brown College has the smallest floor area to student ratio in Canada amongst all the community colleges. GBC’s current athletics facilities are seriously outdated and no longer reflect what is au courant for the College. Macroscopically, they are tucked away from the main traffic patterns of the campus; and microscopically, are equally as invisible in its appearance as a key campus component. In addition to these two factors, GBC also wanted to place an emphasis on increasing the student population’s awareness for health and fitness. Founded as The City College in 1967, GBC now have three campuses – the largest being the St. James Campus within the original Town of York, Upper Canada. The St. James Campus served the city core initially with a building complex nominally called 200 King Street East, bordered by Adelaide, Frederick, King East and George streets. It originally housed the Christie Brown and Company biscuit factory and William Coutts Company / Hallmark Canada from 1874 until 1971 (when GBC acquired these properties). It is a designated heritage structure with the City’s Heritage Preservation Services- notably the Adelaide Street facade. With the entire block built-up, GBC expanded on the 6th floor roof top and re-configured the ground level facade along Adelaide and George streets in 1977 and in-filled two atria in 1995, and eventually grew to include six other accessory buildings, roughly aligned in a north-south axis. In 2006, a comprehensive strategy called the Athletics Facilities Enhancement Plan (AFEP) was commissioned to study how to upgrade the athletics facilities, which is housed in the 1977 expansion (a plain white corrugated metal box on the 6th floor, as a roof-top addition). AFEP is funded entirely by the student population and this $3.8M plan is phased over 3 stages; the final phase in 2012 involving an extension to the 1977 expansion. AFEP calls for a complete renovation of 5,000 square meters of existing space, and the creation of additional 600 square meters of new spaces. Jeffersonian campus planning concepts were introduced to integrate the academic, the student support and the social condenser spaces. The south-east corner stairs represent the central campus axis connecting core elements which act as a nucleus for the horizontal connection (community partnerships) with the interception of the vertical spine connections (integrative programming within GBC).

Technically, the project was envisioned to be dry assembly construction due to time and site constraints. GBC only has a 4-month construction season annually and the campus is an intensely urban site with no staging areas (or even a delivery apron). A historical building has its own building science issues, in addition to policy issues imposed by the City. As a result, the entire project - in all 3 phased stages - must be consistently and carefully delivered over an extended period of time with great transparency with the student body, great scrutiny from the City from a historic and zoning perspective, and complete accountability to GBC to all stakeholders. In lieu of the usual process, the team took a project-managed approach by pre-identifying all of the internal and external stakeholders and recognizing their roles, wishes and responsibilities; and developed a series of visioning workshops from early on in the project to use the power of consensus building as a design tool.

Conceived as the focal point of the development, the tower that the team designed was based on a triangular floor-plate that evolves serially in order to manipulate the facade. The result of this configuration is a forced perspective which projects the prowess of the headquarters to the viewer from all vantage points. Conceptual development, design development, and partial drawings were the primary contributions.

The app excavates a temporal and geographic archaeology of Toronto’s urban monuments. Its archive compiles and stores information about relavent sites as they have changed over time. Loading the app’s content into Layar, an augmented reality app, also allows for a live feed of information based on your proximity to sites. Its development was intended to accustom a first year architecture audience of a commuter student population with the architecture present in the city. Involvement included conceptualizing the app’s functionality, research on the intial suite of archived locations, and a handful of publications on mobile media and augmented reality in pedagogy and architecture.

Acting as an architectural element to define space and present the collection, the table evolved a surface type for presentation purposes and leg configurations for “kit of part”-like assembly. Woudenberg’s work engages various media forms to enhance branding opportunities, as well as the application of reappropriated materials. This philosophy was embedded in the table’s design through engaging an architectural definition of space, creating a substrate for videos, jewelry, and photographs, and sourcing of industrial materials.

The installation at the yearly Toronto gallery event went beyond digital craftsmanship and explored the creation of artificial, interactive environments. Greeted by a fabricated membrane that precariously bifurcates the room, visitors explored and interacted with two environments. Proximity and acoustic changes beneath the membrane corresponded to reactions by components above it, engaging light as a currency in a primitive ecosystem. Terra Fabricata uncovers the potential of digital fabrication as a procreator of immersive environments that both stimulate the senses and simulate living systems responding to its audience and context. Involvement included conceptual design, complete design and fabrication of membrane system,and partial management of the project and its installation.
