PORTFOLIO 2014


My Progression Through Architecture I always had this inert passion to create. I can confess though, that as a child, I did not know that architecture existed as a career. Before my parents decided to brings my siblings and I to live in the United States, I had a chance to see an “albañil,” a brick layer, create a dome in my grandmothers double height living room. I was mesmerized with the way the brick and mortar came together to create such an artistic pattern. I hold these memories close because it reminds me of how far I have progressed through life.


In my early undergraduate semesters I did not have much confidence in my design abilities. I felt that I did not have the same skills and knowledge as the rest of my classmates.

Towards the end of my undergraduate program, I became involved in an AIAS group called Freedom by Design. Freedom By Design is a community service program that provides modifications to enhance the homes of low-income and disabled individuals by addressing their struggles with everyday tasks. As a handicap student, I felt that there were also some areas in the University of New Mexico that needed some attention. It was very difficult for myself to travel from my dorm to class because of the lack of curb ramps at the parking areas by my school. At the time, Bob Doran was my studio professor. I created a map of the route I took to class and the areas that needed improvement and brought it to his attention. He was very impressed with my analysis that he decided hire me as a student in-

At this time Bob was creating a studio group for the university and asked if I wanted to join the team. Here is where my confidence in my abilities exponentially grew. My design skills improved drastically. I have grown more as a person and as a designer in this past year with the guidance and mentorship from Bob and the studio team. This improvement clearly shows in the collection of work that I am providing you with. I thank you for taking the time to review my work.

Anderson School Of Management UNM, Albuqurque, New Mexico

The Douglas M. Brown Dean’s Suite As a retirement gift to the former Dean of the Anderson School of Management, the school decided to name the Dean’s Suite after him. I was given the task of designing and rendering the entire suite. The space has a very open and spacious plan. The Deans office is located on the north-west corner which provides views to the Sandia Mountains. The choice of materials was limited to neutral colors, which gave the mohagony thresholds and interior furniture an opportunity for exhibition. The suite also contains a public terrace which provides views to UNM’s North Campus and also of the West Valley volcanoes.

Cafe and Lobby Spaces There are two ways to enter the Anderson School of Management. The first entrace is located on the first floor, at the south east corner of the building. You enter into a three floor atrium with a glass pyramid ceiling. This floor gives access to the cafe and study spaces. On the third floor, there are areas for student lounging and interaction. The other entrance into the school is located at the north east corner of the building. The ground floor lobby functions as a student community area. The space gives access to two lecture spaces, a technology lab, and two large study spaces.

PROJECT LOCATION

The scope of this project is to renovate the east wing, first floor of Zimmerman Library. Renovation of this area will include removal and relocation of the current circulation desk. This service desk will function as a combined service point to accommodate modern library functions such as laptop and electronic device distribution in addition to traditional library consultations. The library commons renovation will include new carpet, new ceiling systems as shown on drawings. It will also include new lighting and hvac ductwork and digital controls as shown on drawings.

With the guidance and supervision of Robert Doran (University Architect), and Amber Straquadine (Project Lead), I assisted in the development of the Zimmerman Library’s 1st floor remodeling from schematic design through 100% construction documentation. One of my main responsibilities was to draft the entire electrical and mechanichal drawings. I was given lead in the design of the ceiling and lighting for this space. COMBINED SERVICE POINT

Demand Control Ventilation When the zone level CO2 rises above the setpoint of 900 ppm (adjustable), the outside air damper at the AHU shall modulate open in 10% increments. An alarm shall be generated if the concentration reaches 1200 PPM.

Temperature Control Each zone damper at the unit shall modulate to maintain the space temperature. During a call for cooling, maintain the space temperature at the cooling setpoint of 76 °F (adjustable) for occupied periods and 85 °F (adjustable) during unoccupied periods. During a call for heating, maintain the space temperature at the heating setpoint of 72 °F (adjustable) for occupied periods and 55 °F (adjustable) during unoccupied periods.

Multi-Zone

Demand Control Ventilation When the zone level CO2 rises above the setpoint of 900 ppm (adjustable), reset the minimum air flow of active supply air damper and allow mixing to maintain temperature setpoint. If the CO2 concentration remains above the setpoint after the terminal unit is supplying the maximum air flow, the outside air damper at the respective AHU shall modulate open in 10% increments. An alarm shall be generated if the concentration reaches 1200 PPM.

Temperature Control Each dual duct terminal unit shall modulate the cold duct supply air damper and the hot duct supply air damper independently to maintain the space temperature. Mixing shall not be allowed. During a call for cooling, the hot duct supply air damper shall be closed and the cold deck supply air damper shall modulate between the minimum and maximum cooling air flows to maintain the space temperature at the cooling setpoint of 76 °F (adjustable) for occupied periods and 85 °F (adjustable) during unoccupied periods. During a call for heating, the cold duct supply air damper shall be closed and the hot deck supply air damper shall modulate between the minimum and maximum heating air flows to maintain the space temperature at the heating setpoint of 72 °F (adjustable) for occupied periods and 55 °F (adjustable) during unoccupied periods.

UNM Gallup Master Plan: Basemap UNM, Gallup, New Mexico

This study shows a proposal site for the housing at the UNM Gallup campus. The student housing will contain 200 beds for the commutting students of the area. The site is located at the north-eastern portion of the campus. The basemap was developed using AutoCAD and Illustrator.

Located all of the problematic areas in the Central Campus of UNM. Then created layers of paths that began in areas of access to the campus and ended in interest points such as libraries and food courts.

With these layers, we found areas with high activity and high ADA issues. These areas would become the target for remedy.

Sergio De Haro Study UNM, Albuqurque, New Mexico

Sergio De Haro is a scientist and a professor, at the Biomedical Research Facility, UNM, He struggled to access his office and classroom because of his physical disability. In this tour, we noted all the dificulties and found a faster and less strenuous route which he could use. In this path we remedied as many of the accessibility issues as possible so that his daily routine would be less difficult.

Urban Arts Studio + Learning Center Barelas, Albuqurque, New Mexico

In an area ridden with crime and poverty, the Urban Arts Studio provides an outlet for the the youth of this community to express themselves artistically without being categorized as vandals. The Art studio focused on the street arts. The center studio walls are adjustable and removable so that the work can be transported when finished. The center also has a supply shop and an apartment in the back for the shop owner.

ARROYO InnoRail Transportation System Albuqurque, New Mexico

Stopping at the most visited areas of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the ARROYO InnoRail gives access to these sites in a very fast and accessible mode of transportation. By placing the InnoRail inside the Arroyo of I40 Interstate, we give it an audience. Underneath the InnoRail, a safe park which allows the community to take leisure walks, bike riding, and skate boarding priviledges as they deboard the InnoRail.

Garden of Natural Disaster Pensacola, Florida

Before a storm, the shelter acts as a park and recreational center. The people of the surrounding community within the 50 feet radius of the park have the ability to evacuate immidiately. The close proximity of the shelter allows the families to be within a familiar enviroment with familiar people of their community.


Pensacola, Florida Pensacola Florida History As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 51,923. The population density was 2,478.7 people per square mile.Pensacola was founded in 1559 by a Spanish explorer named Tristรกn de Luna y Arellano. It was officially America's first settlement. After about 116 years of Spanish rule, the French took control over Pensacola from 1719 to 1722. The colony was then passed to the British who seized control of Pensacola temporarily through the Peace of Paris. Pensacola was also named the capital of the new British Colony. During the Civil War, Pensacola was a part of the Confederacy. The United States later regained control, and Pensacola was once again a part of the union on May 1862.

Neighborhood parks as mass shelter 1,000 FEET RADIUS At this circumfrence, It would be more convenient and safer to shelter at the neighborhood park zone.

Evacuating from a flood zone takes time and preparation. With the correct instructions and possible transportation a person can evacuate safely. For those that are unable to obtain a vehicle or have a are physically unable to travel long distances, the safety provided by the neighborhood park comes as a relief.
