Brief 01:

YCN_Fedrigoni

03

This YCN brief asked me to create a desk calendar that promotes their new Woodstock paper range. It must be aesthetically pleasing whilst also maintaining maximum functionality, this being of upmost importance. I decided to choose this brief because stock has become something that I find very interesting and I had wanted to explore this further; I felt that this brief offered the perfect opportunity for me to experiment with paper and look at different ways it could be used. I often end up producing the same type of outcomes for every brief whereas this brief forced me to work outside of my comfort zone and create a desk calendar, something I normally would shy away from.

The Brief:

OUGD 503

At the start of the project I had an idea, as seen on the right, that I ran with and despite receiving praise from my peers I still felt that my outcome wasn’t really appropriate in terms of what the brief was asking. The design didn’t focus on the main aspect of the brief: functionality. I had managed to produce a desk calendar without the use of any printing, a challenge that I had set myself when I originally came up with this idea, but had forgotten about the most essential element of the design. I then made the decision to completely change my outcome, producing something completely different that was more considered and appropriate for the brief. I think that this was a good choice as if I had just submitted this outcome I wouldn’t have been happy with it. I didn’t have much time to product a new calendar which forced me to keep my idea simple and allowed me to focus more on the functionality of the design.

Upon reconsideration I decided to change my design, this time focusing on the function of the calendar as well as the target audience: printers and graphic designers. I successfully incorporated design elements of two existing products, Pantone and Post-It Notes, whilst also ensuring that my product was appropriate for the target audience. Overall, I think that this brief was very successful and I am very happy with my final outcome. I have managed to produce something that is of a high standard and successfully answers the brief within a fairly short time. Due to my outcome changing at a late date, I was unable to complete the entire calendar and instead just produced ‘January’. However, I feel that the way in which I photographed the outcome effectively displayed the product and the concept without the need for the rest of the calendar.

Typeface:

OUGD 503

Considering that neither of us had created a typeface before, I feel that we created a very consistent and crafted typeface that worked well. We focused heavily on the concept behind the typeface, creating a grid based around an interview with a ‘Big Issue’ vendor, taking key words from the interview and converting them in to shapes relating to their symbolic meanings. This allowed us to base the actual design of the typeface around the views of a ‘Big Issue’ vendor thus making the typeface much more conceptual and subtle. However, due to so much time and effort going into the actual typeface, we ran out of time and were forced to reduce the outcomes that we had planned on producing within the time scale. We did still produce a typeface, type specimen book and a print yet I feel that we could’ve done much more for this brief given more time to work on it. Also, there are a few letterforms that I am still unhappy with. I feel that because we were so focused on sticking with the grid we forced ourselves to create letterforms that fit into the grid instead of letterforms that were aesthetically more appropriate. As a whole I do feel that this project was a success in terms of our collaboration as we managed to work very well as a team and pushed ourselves harder than we had anticipated, resulting in a well-rounded project. It is something that I would like to continue working on in order to complete it to a standard that I am happier with.

Brief 03:

First Artist Bank

13

OUGD 503

“First Artist Bank (FAB) is a global creative community bank built by artists for artists that is being launched in the 3rd quarter of 2014. FAB is seeking help from the creative community to help design their logo. I chose this brief as branding and identity is currently my main interest within graphic design and I want to take this opportunity to work on more projects focused on this area. I felt that this brief was very open to interpretation and would allow me to be more conceptual and creative. There is also a very large prize, which was a very good incentive to produce something of a much higher standard. I love my outcome for this brief and think that it very successfully answers the brief. I decided to use an image of a hand delicately holding a small plant; the hand symbolises the protection and nurturing that FAB offers, whilst the plant symbolises the customer. After looking into meanings of different colours I decided to use orange which represents both creativity and success that are both key elements within FAB. I think that the message behind the design as well as the aesthetic will make it stand out from other submissions. Although I am very pleased with the outcome I feel as though I have seen it before. Despite not being able to find anything too similar online, I feel as though this interpretation will not be as original as something more abstract.

Brief 04:

Emma’s Cakes

15

OUGD 503

A friend of the family sells cakes and approached me asking if I could make her a logo that she could then use across a range of outcomes. Due to my main interest within graphic design being branding and identity, and as I had only created one logo during this module so far, I decided that this brief would give me the opportunity to explore this further without any pressure. The final outcome for this brief is very different to the kind of design that I normally create; yet I think that it is very successful in that the retro aesthetic and fun, vibrant colour used effectively represent the client, thus answering the brief. At the start of the project though I struggled a lot as I was trying to produce something that was more about my aesthetic as opposed to something that would be successful in regards to the brief. However, I feel that this is something that I have learned from this brief and can take into account during future briefs to ensure that I am focusing on answering the brief instead of my own aesthetic.

Brief 05:

Freelance Hairdresser

17

A freelance hairdresser named Georgia Wharram asked me if I could produce a business card for her that she could hand out to potential clients. Again being based around branding and identity I decided that my skills were very suited to what she needed. I came up with my idea fairly quickly and was able to complete the brief in only a few days, producing exactly what the client was asking for. I think that this was a successfully brief as I was able to produce a logo that has a fairly obvious meaning behind it; I combined the ‘g’ from her first name and the shape of ‘scissors’ based from the occupation to create a simple logo that could easily be applied across various printed or digital media.

Brief 06:

Dialogue

19

OUGD 503

For this brief I was asked to create a single colour print that, if chosen, would be exhibited at The Corn Exchange. “The theme of the exhibition is ‘dialogue’ where each creative will submit a design that will be used in a blind collaboration.” I chose to compete because it would be the first time that my work was displayed within an actual exhibition outside of university and I found that very exciting. It was a simple brief that only took a day to complete and I felt that this would allow me to explore a few ideas. I often avoid making posters as I find them difficult and so this brief would force me to experiment with a different format to that I am used to working with. Overall I think that my designs were successful in that they answered the brief, despite only one of my designs actually being chosen for the exhibition. I explored a few different ideas that each touched upon the theme of ‘dialogue’ in different ways; I also ended up producing a collaborative piece for this brief. Because I wanted to complete this brief within a day, I ended up rushing my designs in order to ensure that I submitted them on time, which meant that I couldn’t explore all of the ideas I had planned on. I had tried to keep all of my designs very simple, all just containing text that was clear and legible, but when attending the event I realised that the way in which they were putting designs together meant that my designs weren’t really what they wanted despite actually answering the brief.
