Raincoats, Umbrellas and Underwear As you stand dripping in your wet clothes, looking at the group of children who ambushed you as you walked out of your resort with their water pistols and now emptied buckets dangling from their tiny arms, you will remember why the front desk had a sudden surplus of umbrellas standing at the ready. Our best advice for you is to balance your surprise with a smile, and remember this: Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain!

April brings the change of seasons, and with it, the Kingdom of Thailand celebrates the completion of another year, and fanatically washes itself off to begin anew. The days and nights have now reached equilibrium, and the New Year for the people of Thailand is upon us all. Songkran is the celebration that gives birth to the aspirations of revival and rejuvenation, allowing the ending of one year to bring to light the possibility that we have indeed learned from the past 365 days gone before.

The festivities of the Songkran week will be ones that you will never forget, and don’t let the dates fool you. Despite the fact that the actual celebration begins on Tuesday the 13th of April, there are those who are filling up their water guns days before, anxious to begin the fun. The sharing of water is a blessing, and the benefactors are everywhere! In between ducking and dodging the freezing cold spray of aqua blessed with care, we bring you our monthly magazine filled with hot features from around Asia. Samui in Brief
qUICKgUIDE
Samui’s Towns & Beaches
THE ISLAND OF KOH SAMUI has been a hidden treasure for paradise seekers over the past 40 years. Today the beaches remain to be the passion of the island, with resorts and hide-away bungalows spilling out and onto the white sands. Each beach on Samui has maintained its own personality, relating to the area that it lies within. Featured here are some of the highlights of each of these areas for the holiday traveller to enjoy.
Chaweng
The beach is a huge horseshoe of soft sand that offers a spectacular view of the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan. There are a number of good local restaurants and businesses along the beach, as well as located on the main ring road. MaeNam is home to many of the island’s residential developments with a growing quantity of long-term visitors and expats, giving the area a strong sense of community. The hills behind Mae Nam provide the location for the island’s spectacular world-class golf resort.
Lamai
Bo phut
Lamai has often been referred to as Samui’s second beach, but there are many who believe it has a greater beauty than that of Chaweng. The waters are excellent for swimming and the beaches and streets are less crowded. The southern end of the bay features elegant granite boulders while the beach itself seems endless. The nightlife in Lamai hosts some excellent restaurants and bars scattered along its strip. The surrounding area notably hosts some of the islands best spas and health resorts available. If you wander off the beaten track here, you might get a glimpse of some true Thai culture.
Bo Phut stands out as the only village on Samui that exudes authentic island charm. It consists of a single street lined with traditional shophouses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, sales shops and guesthouses. The distinct designs of the beachside dining sector, as well as the chosen cuisine that is available, have created an exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere. Bo Phut is expanding constantly, generating new wining and dining options every year. Despite its growth, the essential seaside appeal remains, making it one of the island’s most attractive locations.
Big Buddha Beach
Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam
If your stay is brief, Big Buddha Beach area offers convenience due to its close proximity to the airport, as well as to boats chartered for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Prices for accommodation and provisions remain reasonable, and there are a growing number of fine dining options to compliment the local Thai restaurants and beach bungalow cuisine. Facilities and services are abundant along the main road, making this one of the best locations for a vibrant night-life.The Big Buddha itself can be seen overlooking the entire area and remains to be the focal attraction.
6
MaeNam
Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Samui. It is also the largest tourist centre with more than 1.5 million travellers visiting annually. 5 Star luxury resorts share the space with more economical accommodation choices, along with a 5 kilometre street of stalls and shops that sell everything Thailand is famous for. Prices are a little higher here than in other areas of the island, but the range of choices in food, accommodation and entertainment is impressive, making this beach and its surroundings, the center of activity for many visitors.
www.siammap.com
The unspoiled South-West Coast of Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi has seen the least change of any area on the island. The romantic coastline here overlooks the spectacular Five Islands and Anthong Marine Park. Several excellent beachside seafood restaurants, bungalows and resorts can be found scattered along the coast offering the most idyllic locations to watch the sun setting into the sea. Palms come right down to the water’s edge, dense greenery right up to the sands, with swimming an idyllic experience. Out to sea are the mountains of the mainland, distant and hazy, fading to purple as evening comes.
Hua Thanon
The Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon offers a handful of seafood restaurants, but its main attraction lies in the ancient cultures of the local fishermen. Intricately painted wooden boats are used to this day to catch and deliver fish directly to the local markets. Take a stroll through its market and capture a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s original communities. Beyond Hua Thanon, the southern coast offers some of the most unspoiled natural scenery on Samui. You will find quaint local villages and coconut plantations that have endured the test of time.
Nathon
This is the island’s main administrative centre. All government offices, banks, as well as the main ferry pier are located in Nathon, making it the most important place for communication with the Thai mainland. Nathon also boasts a number of original teak shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more traditional, Chinese influenced Samui life. Any major local events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park in front of the main pier in Nathon. Visitors tend to pass through this beautiful village on their way to either Chaweng or Lamai, missing some of the least expensive shopping on the island. A nightly food market establishes itself here regularly, giving visitors their first taste of the delights available on Samui.
CHOENG MON
Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays, speckled with white sandy beaches upon its coastline. Despite its close proximity to Chaweng, about 15 minutes north and 5 minutes from Big Buddha, the beaches have remained quiet and the waters clean. Choeng Mon’s wide sandy beaches feature a rock formation on one side, and the island of Koh Som that you can easily paddle out to on the other. This is a very family friendly area, with exclusive resorts abundantly situated along the water’s edge. Relatively upmarket, inexpensive accommodation is virtually non-existent in this area. This lesser-known beach is located in a very secluded part of Koh Samui, on the northeast corner of the island where most of the bays have been given over to private residential developments.
Bang rak
This area has become home to some of the most driven entrepreneurs, leaders of business and tourism operators that have ever inhabited the island. The preservation of the ancient village character has been kept a priority, and as the name of Bang Rak translates into ‘The Village of Love’ in the Thai language, so has the charm been reserved that this village emanates. Harbour and home for many of the island’s yachting members, including the speedboat charters and touring vessels that make their way to the neighbouring island’s and the Angthong National Marine Park, this is where you can find day charters to all-inclusive excursions around Samui and beyond. This area is also home to the island’s Optimist sailing Club for children, The Yacht Club, where young sailors are taught in true sailing spirit the art of mastering not only the sea, but themselves, competing in national championships with the best of the best in Thailand, and from around the globe.

River Kwai Trophy Adventure Race
by Daniel Coutts
On the 6th of March 272 people, or 136 2-person teams, gathered in Kanchanaburi, home to the war-historic and infamous Bridge over the River Kwai, to participate in the 5th annual River Kwai Trophy Adventure Race. Adventure racing is allegedly the world’s fastest growing sport. Typically, a combination of running, cycling, swimming and kayaking are cleverly set from beginning to end traversing cross-country terrain with varying degrees of hostility, depending on location, weather conditions and distances. The Adventure Race concept originated in Australia, where it has since grown in popularity and now enjoys a global following. Many of the participants in Kanchanaburi had travelled from around the world, making the event very much an international affair. The event organisers of Active Management Asia have been leading the growth of this sport in Thailand, and now organise events in four Thailand destinations per year, including Koh Samui, which saw the Adventure Race series brought to its shores for the first time last September, and is set to happen again on September 18th 2010 at the Ibis Hotel. It was as I gathered at the River Kwai Bridge, the starting point of the River Kwai Trophy Race, that the full realization of what I had got myself into began to hit home. An uncontained mixture of excitement and adrenaline overwhelmed me, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown and a moment of confusion that perhaps I was at a sports themed music event, as cheesy House tunes were blasted over the sound system, and other participants whooped and cheered in anticipation.
8
www.siammap.com
The term Adventure Racing had been a new concept to me up until less than 12 months ago, when I discovered that a friend had been contemplating participating in one. My friend, better known for her partying lifestyle was certainly no athlete, and the only endurance I was aware she had, was her ability to prop the bar up all night. Gathering some confidence from the reality that if she could do it - anyone could, I flippantly agreed to enter, and before I knew it, I had been signed up, entrance fees paid and dates set. My covert drinking buddy however quickly became a dark horse and regularly updated me with her training progress, much to the astonishment of myself and our friends. Not wishing to be upstaged in any way, and with course distances (which are never released until after the event) in the region of 10K of running, 30K of cycling plus swimming and kayaking, taking participants anywhere between 4 - 8 hours, I knew some serious work was to be done. One thing I had not considered was the amount of time I would have to dedicate to getting fit enough, regularly spending 2.5hours doing cardio in an effort to build up my stamina.
On the day, as we set off in our teams of two, running through rice fields and taking in the stunning panoramic surroundings of the hills and mountains, toes squelching in my water sodden trainers, those moments of “this is my first and last time I will ever do something like this again were quickly forgotten, despite the intense heat. The training had paid off and the most gruelling moments for me were in the preparation - the event itself was the end reward and the fruits of my labour. Speaking to other contestants afterwards about their reasons for taking part, and as I looked around, noticing the cross section of ages and the varying shapes and sizes, I quickly conceded that the stereotypes I had formed about the types of people this sort of event must attract were unfounded. Yes, there were the extreme fitness variety on hand, but there were also a lot of otherwise ordinary people looking for a sense of adventure and up for taking on a challenge, who just like me had never thought something of this calibre was within their capabilities. Later that night at the awards dinner, I had quickly fallen back into my old ways, beer in hand along with most other people. I thought to myself, I did it, 6.5 hours and two bicycle punctures later, I had completed my first ever Adventure Race! Will this be the last one I ever do? Maybe the beer had gone to my head as I yet again, in much the same frivolous manner as before, shook hands on entering the Samui Trophy on September the 18th. For anyone interested in joining with me in the greatest personal challenge you might ever experience, please visit: www.active-asia.com for more information. Samui is reported to be the most challenging in the Adventure Race Series, with much of the course threaded through mountainous terrain. I was heartily warned by those with experience... now if I could only find my partner to return the favour of an event not to be missed. Aha! There she is...doing shooters at the bar!

The Garden of
Bali
Located in the Lesser Sunda chain of the Indonesia archipelago, and next to Java and Lombok, the true beauty of Bali not only beckons with the allure of its mysterious volcanic mountains, distinct white and black sand beaches, lush forests, white water rivers, surging waves and architecture; but primarily by the warmth of its friendly people and their culture, which is neatly engraved into a mosaic of traditional dance, sculpture, art, painting and music. On my arrival at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, I make my way through Immigration with ease and meet my awaiting host. As Tourism is the spine of Bali, English is commonly spoken, although Balinese and Bahasa-Indonesian are the main languages amongst the islanders. In between taking on the challenges of action activities and exploring the island, I spent time imaging and enjoying some of the most idyllic places and past times of Bali, one of this planets true garden’s of Eden. Breakfast by the beach at the Laguna Resort & Spa started me off with exuberance into my day of activities. Defined with a slogan of “Luxury is our Middle Name” the resort stands among one of the best in the lot of Starwood Luxury Collection Hotels along the Nusa Dua beach. My host from the Bali International Rafting Company received me in the lobby, and I along with the others in the group drove to the Telaga Waja River, perhaps the only river in Bali where White Water rafting is a full-day action adventure. Securely strapped with life vests and safety-helmets we are herded onto the raft. An overture of rapids and sharp bends pumped in a feeling of pure thrill and excitement as we bounced from rock to rock. The entire stretch is absolutely scenic. Patches of palm forests, rice terraced paddies and lush vegetation along the course, highlight the three magnificent and panoramic waterfalls. A great day of activity concluded at my new abode at Bagus Jati Health Resort and Spa, set atop a hill on the outskirts of Ubud. An extremely refreshing Resort, each independent villa is shaped in a Yurt like chalet (a Nomadic skin dwelling), and has been tastefully trimmed overlooking the lush forest.
10
www.siammap.com
The Resort’s Sejati Spa features on its menu the stimulating Shiatsu massage. In this Japanese form of therapy, strong pressure is applied on the meridian lines, thus releasing body toxins and re-energizing the body and mind. Throughout my stay, I am on a palatable organic menu mainly comprised of grain food, lean meat, vegetables and fresh juices. The Ubud Central district offers five star luxury accommodations at venues such as the Alila Ubud, ranging to Boutique and Artsy hotels. Losman (home stay) and EcoLodges are nestled amidst the natural surroundings of the forest river reverberating with the sound of nature’s music. The Exquisite Viceroy Bali, Kupu Kupu Barong Villas & Tree Spa, home away from home at Ketut Place, Body & Soul Homestay & Spa, Cendana Resort (Monkey Forest area) and a queue of abodes are abundant in an array of budget’s. Ubud is the cultural core of Bali with its Art Street and Balinese Folk Dance venue at Ubud Palace, as well as within many other courtyards. The Market Place is stringed with souvenir shops, pottery, batik wear, wood sculptures and curios made here in Bali. A walk through the Monkey Forest at Ubud opens up the window into the behavioural aspects of primates. These monkeys tend to cling together in large groups, and you must secure fast all your belongings to avoid temptation. Another entertaining spot near Ubud is the Elephant Safari Park. Strapped on the back of an elephant and exploring the Taro jungle is great fun for all ages. The elephants at the Park are also trained to perform amusing feats, including painting portraits on canvas. Next, I am bound for East of Bali, famous for surfing, second only to the more renowned surging waves at Kuta beach. En route, I walk the ruins of Ujung: the vast Royal Pleasure Garden built in 1919 during the Karangasem Kingdom. Then, after a quick visit to the unique Bat Cave Temple, we drive to the Besakih Temple – the largest of the more than 2000 temples on the Island. Scaling a stack of stairs all the way to the top, I stand mesmerised at the sight of the daylight surrendering into the igniting claws of the twilight zone, while in the distance Mount Batur fumes with apocalyptic patience.
About an hour’s journey from here, we head for Kuta and Legian district, famed for its beaches that pull surfers rolling onto peak waves and for night owls that haunt the early break of dawn. Bali’s black beaches at Lovina are located along the western shores of the island. Here Puri Bagus Lovina makes a perfect place to spend a week exploring the west coast. The resort’s swimming pool is fed by natural spring water and thus distributes natural therapy, apart from the wellness programs offered at the spa. The place is adorned with striking Balinese gardens, while warm and friendly specialists at the resort pamper the guests with a genuine touch of Balinese hospitality. Sanur has earned a reputation as the hip shopping area of Bali. Its quaint shops and trend-setting restaurants offer a stark contrast to the posh shopping plazas at Nusa Dua and Kuta areas. Hotels and resorts are queued up along the long stretch of Sanur beach, which includes the Hyatt Resort Sanur. It’s not only the beaches and the genuine hospitality of the people of the island to which Bali owns a strong appeal. The gastronomic experiences and wellness programs, as well as the countless green and stylish spas dotted all around this dreamland, bestow upon each and every visitor the sensation of witnessing paradise on Earth. Some people have learned to dance in the rain... others only to get wet! by Glenn R. Wallis
All I did was step outside of my hotel, and it hit me! I’m not exactly sure why, or what I did, but there I stood soaking wet. The streets were a blaze of people with buckets of water, giant water guns, and hoses stretched from who knows where, out into the traffic. Truckloads of Thais and tourists were frantically throwing as much water as possible onto the people lined up along the sides of the road, and in retaliation the pedestrians scrambled out of their way only to attack the vehicles en-mass when it appeared they had an advantage. I had inadvertently walked into the middle of what appeared to be a chaotic battle. I looked down at my newly pressed clothes, watching the water run down my legs and into my shoes, and wondered why. Why me? “Happy New Year!” the doorman said to me with a smile, and handed me an umbrella. So here’s what I now know, and out of the kindness of my heart, I thought that I should pass along to you some details that may be of interest to you, come the 13th of April in the Kingdom of Thailand. Although it would make me smile to witness your surprise, if you had been as unaware of the festivities as I was.
12
www.siammap.com
There are only two things that one must keep in mind during the coming holiday of Songkran... two very important things. They are the duo of actions that will allow you to enjoy this celebration to its fullest. Two rules you must not forget, despite the fact that they contradict one another. 1. Keep smiling 2. Keep your mouth closed There is also the fact that you will get wet, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, so wear something you don’t mind getting soaked in with the mystical waters. If you carry a bar of soap with you during these 3 days, you may even come out fairly clean! Beginning on the 13th of the month and running until the 15th, Thailand will find itself immersed in the largest recorded water fight in history. The festival of Songkran is definitely the most celebrated of holidays on Samui, due to its unconventional method of ending the past year. Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year’s holiday, and certainly the most unconcealed of all annual Thai celebrations. It is a time of appreciation, worship, merriment, and most importantly, outright fun. All celebrations for
the Thai people are executed with full-hearted enthusiasm, whether it is a foreign or a national holiday event. Songkran, however, brings forward the true passion of a people who are grateful for the changing of seasons. Songkran is basically a weeklong street festival for the Siamese, and is an absolutely astounding spectacle for the visitors. While the splendid preparations and over the top behavior, the feasting, the dining, the singing and dancing, and the beauty contests, are the obvious signs of Songkran, there is a deep underlying religious tradition that is the root of this special holiday. This fifth lunar month is the season when the days become longer and the nights become shorter, with the spring equinox bringing the days and nights closer to equal lengths. Songkran is a time of great purification for the Thai people, the spring-cleaning if you will, for their Buddhist faith. All of the personal and public gods are purified and washed, a symbolic resurrection of their god’s protective benevolence that will last until next year’s Songkran. The honoring of one’s ancestors by reflecting on their great deeds also becomes significant, with particular homage paid to older people. The actual name from the original Sanskrit language was Maha Songkran Day, meaning the Great New Day. The Songkran holiday includes three days, the first of which falls on April 13th called the Maha Songkran, marking the end of the old year. The second day, April 14th, is called Wan Klang or Wan Nao, considered to be the
samui culture preparation day, concluding with Wan Taleung Sok, which is the actual New Year’s Day on the 15th of April. As it is with almost every major holiday in Asia, this holiday is infused with a spiritual significance well beyond merely acknowledging a chronological point in time, and as such, involves a pantheon of Goddesses and Gods who govern the rituals attendant to the holiday. As with the entire cosmology of Thailand, Songkran legends are a curious mix of local ancestral gods, of Buddhism, of Vedanta, and of the prevailing modern festivities. To most visitors, Songkran is widely known as the ultimate water fight! The beauty of this festival is that it occurs during the hottest time of the year, offering relief from the stifling heat with its wild water-tossing street battles. If you think that you can escape the skirmishes by ducking indoors, be warned that open doorways, windows and vehicles are fair game! The water exchanges are not truly battles, but more in the form of a drive by splashing. People will line the streets ready to take aim at truckloads of combatants armed with dayglo coloured water pistols, while the opponents on board pour buckets and barrels of ice-cold water onto the crowds. There are of course, those who want to be certain that visiting tourist have the opportunity to join in the fun, and revelers will often enter restaurants and include dining guests as part of the hunt. It’s all done in the spirit of Sanuk (FUN!), and unless you have an aversion to water, no one is generally injured. It gets so heavy at times, that we recommend wearing full diving gear as you drive your motorbike down the main drags in Chaweng, Lamai, or through any populated Ring Road area. Songkran is a time when everyone gets to act like a child again and there’s a lot of laughing and shrieking going on, an interesting step away from the quiet natured, social norms of Thai behavior. Thai people are culturally held in reserve, non-aggressive, and respectful, and this rare opportunity allows for them to break out of their shackles of timidity, and for one day of the year act in an acceptable crazy manner without fear of what other people will think. The fun aside, this doesn’t mean that the Thai people
14
www.siammap.com
don’t have a deep and abiding respect for the more spiritual and cultural traditions associated with this holiday. At the end of the day, it’s all about the essence of being Thai, the honouring of traditions, and the respect of family and community. People put on new cloths, clean up and bless their houses, and make clear their abiding devotion to their parents, and to their elders. This family holiday is about making things new, cleaning up your act, and purifying your life. The primary and central ritual of Songkran is the cleaning of the Lord Buddha. All of the Buddha statues in the country are cleaned or purified, starting with the most important Buddha of all, the Emerald Buddha. Songkran is a time when his Highness, the King of Thailand, changes the robes on the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok. This is one of the most sacred rituals the King can perform, mixing secular monarchy with deep spiritualism in the eyes of his subjects. Wat Pra Kaew, or the Grand Palace, is the number one tourist attraction in Asia, but it is closed to the public while the King performs the Songkran robe changing ceremony, with only ranking monks in attendance.
Temples across the kingdom are spruced up for Songkran with a new coat of paint, with major mopping and sweeping, repair of flags, statues, and paintings, and as much of a general house cleaning as can possibly be done on the entire temple grounds. The key element of all of these rituals is water, that most powerful, mysterious, and perfect element of purification. Buddhist figures from home shrines, and the most important symbolic sacred objects are washed with holy water brought from the temple. Thais often take small amounts of the water that has been blessed by the monks, and return to their home and splash it around to purify their dwelling, their work place, their animals, and even their motorbikes. Only after the Buddha and amulets have been washed can the rest of the Songkran celebrations proceed. One of Songkran’s other principal religious ceremonies involves bringing sand from riverbanks or beaches to the temple, and including it in the building of an elaborate sand Stupa, the bell shaped monuments found on the grounds in every Thai temple.
This Stupa is a sort of spiritual sand castle, with everyone in town bringing their tiny amount of sand to be included in the temporary monument to Lord Buddha. Along with the most obvious secular activities associated with this holiday, which includes the throwing of a lot of water, tossing colored powders, setting captured birds or fish free, are the outrageous beauty pageants. There are ancient legends of the Songkran goddesses, seven goddesses in all, one for each day of the week. The seven goddesses represent the daughters of King Kabillabrama, a mythic king whose head was lost in a debate, and came to symbolize the essence of heat. This being the hottest time of year provides a niche for the old headless king to be linked to Songkran, and his daughters are considered the seven angels of heaven. The beauty contests feature Thai women dressed like goddesses displaying their sweetest charms to a happy family audience. The women that enter the contest will win by exhibiting the best in looks, artistic talent, and speaking talent. These girls display their skill performing traditional Thai dances, giving little speeches to display their intelligence, and are dressed up in the most amazing and ornate outfits possible. In the eyes of visitors, these beauty contestants look like bizarre Barbie dolls from another planet. Songkran is a time for fun, and it is the biggest most jubilant celebration of the year. For those of you who are fortunate enough to visit the Kingdom during these three days, join in the festivities, allow the children that are scattered through the villages to take aim on you, and take this opportunity to share in the washing away of the past year.
Remember our small pieces of advice and keep smiling, but keep your mouth closed. Only Buddha knows where the water came from!

Buoyancy
World
by Ayesha Cantrell
Following in the footsteps of the previous BioRock project, the Save Koh Tao Group have initiated a new project called Buoyancy World. The idea behind the enterprise is simply to create an alternative dive site to take pressure off the most popular training dive sites. By creating structures that will act as coral and reef nurseries, and offering student divers a playground in which to practice buoyancy skills, Save Koh Tao hopes to limit damage to the existing natural reef structures. The project is an ambitious one, but with the many dive centres on Koh Tao actively involved it’s certainly a case of many hands making light work. However, not all dive centres are on board and the project has certainly divided opinions both on and off the island. Following forum discussions, some critics have commented that the project is simply dumping more rubbish into the ocean. Given the unsuccessful project in Phuket that saw a huge amount of time and money spent on sinking helicopters and airplanes with similar aims in mind, it’s easy to see why people are dubious. The programme in Phuket appears to have been poorly located and the structures have been missing for some time now, relocated by the ocean forces. The flip side and the positive aspect is the inspiration for active involvement in the island’s future, as well as the level of awareness created by the project. There are similar projects in place all over the world; the ultimate success of these endeavours will only be proved over time by the sites sustainability and usage. Whatever your point of view, it’s an interesting project to see develop. Planned to be in the water by September last year, the projects deployment has been hampered by weather, and the structures waited silently in a field to fulfil their purpose. Guidelines for the structures were well laid out with consideration given to both training and habitat requirements, as well as their structural stability and ecological impact on the underwater environment. The actual site itself is very close to an existing and popular dive site, which offers easy access.

www.siammap.com
Some fantastic structures have been fabricated, and will function as either nurseries or aids to diver training that can be used without fear of damaging the fragile reef by the inexperience of novice divers. There are fish sculptures and marine animals, bamboo forests in addition to other interesting sights to tour. An effort has also been made to recycle while building the structures, and reusable materials such as glass bottles are featured in a few of the designs. These are perfect hidey-holes for tiny fish and critters seeking refuge and shelter. The project’s budget has been estimated at half a million Baht, which the local community raised through sponsorship and adoption of structures, as well as from fund raising events and donations. Just a few weeks ago, teams of divers and on-land volunteers worked in unison over 2 days to move the installations from their peaceful field into their novel underwater home. Trucks, cranes, and lots of enthusiasm transported the structures to the night boat, whose crane lowered the structures onto the seabed. The larger pieces were prepared in smaller sections and were assembled on site beneath the ocean’s waves. Many divers were used to co-ordinate this effort, using lift bags attached to float the smaller sections into place. A few days later I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to dive the site, and while not yet fully completed, I was impressed by the life that had already moved in. Juveniles hid in the ropes, Anemones and other fish had already discovered the safety offered by the nooks and crevices created. Coral had also been transplanted to one structure in particular, and time will tell how it cultivates. Instructors were already using the site for dive tours. The location is perfect for navigation practice and some structures offer buoyancy options for training. It ultimately offers instructors a place to take their students while they master control underwater, without fear of harming the actual reef. While it will probably be a curiosity for experienced fun divers, it will free more space on the actual reefs in this area for those knowledgeable in their skills. If this new world is used, it will relieve stress as it was designed to, and only time will tell as to the structures integrity underwater and therefore the sites longevity. Whatever your point of view, this will be an interesting project to watch mature. When teaching I will certainly have a peek at Buoyancy World, and will without doubt, venture out to take more photographs to capture the site’s evolution. At the very least, the initiative will create a discussion point for instructors with their new divers, which will help highlight the danger humankind poses to the oceans of our planet.

An Ultimoto Adventure:
Ural Rides In Vietnam This time last year, I wrote in my column about an unforgettable lifestyle experience that took you on beautiful BMW motorbikes across Thailand. After this motorcycling adventure full of excitement, stunning scenery and new friends, I was convinced that should the opportunity arise again, I would jump at the chance to mount up once more. Last month, finally, I was ‘back on track’ creating my own personal ‘Road Movie’ in Vietnam. This time not on heavy BMW’s but on stunning, vintage, Russian built Ural bikes! For two weeks I was living in the past and loved every moment of it. Hitch a ride along with me from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City via Sapa, Mu Cang Chai (Mount Fansipan), Mai Chau, Vinh, Hue and Hoi An, and enjoy the sights from a passenger’s point of view. I was sitting in a classic sidecar, of course! The Ural 650 bike, complete with my ‘personal chauffeur’, is famous for its military past. It truly has the look of motorcycling days gone by. Our Vietnamese Tour 2010 started in Hanoi, a unique city with its coffee house culture, socialist artwork and French colonial architecture. A small group of experienced bike freaks and I stayed in the Golden Lotus Hotel, a charming boutique property located in the trendy Old Quarter. That’s where we met James Shayler, our tour guide on this trip and owner of Ultimoto Adventures based in Bangkok and in the UK. With more than 20 years experience as an off-road biker, this smart and well-travelled Briton is indeed the best ambassador for unique explorer trips that he organises in Asia and other parts of the world. “I wanted to arrange a Vietnamese tour spectacular that not only covered all of the must see parts of the country, but did so by combining paved roads with off road adventure sections including river crossings, and plenty of mud!” says James. Some of his clients really want to get dirty, he continues with a twinkle in his eye. So after much research he found exciting dirt tracks and sweeping mountain roads in the middle of nowhere, and added to them a bit of beach action and plenty of opportunity to experience the cultural and historical aspects of Vietnam. My strongest memory was our ride through China town, the French Quarter and around the lakes of Hanoi. We had the fantastic opportunity to see the presidential residence and the beautiful opera house, both built by the French in 1901. Then there was the Temple of Literature, the war museum and Uncle Ho’s Mausoleum, and of course plenty of Vietnam’s war history and sights en route during the following days as well.
“I put the word ´War´ on my list, too,” says James. “I’ve learned a lot about Japan’s part in the Second World War since visiting Kanchanaburi in Thailand. Vietnam and its history will be much the same. Our local guides have a wealth of information on the country’s troubled history and I’m sure that you will, as I did, come away very much the wiser.”
18
www.siammap.com
I’ll certainly know more after 1,900kms and two weeks of discovery, that’s for sure. Although the country is no longer divided, there are still two very different aspects to Vietnam, which are clearly noticeable when travelling between the North and the South. Both have different cultures, different landscapes and different climates. The weather was unfortunately cold and wet while we were winding our way towards the Chinese border into the rugged mountains of Northern Vietnam. Mount Fansipan is the country’s highest peak reaching 3,143 metres, and the view over cultivated rice paddy terraces on the mountainsides is stunning. This section of our tour included several river crossings, 40kms of horse tracks with steep drops on either side, bamboo bridges and lot’s of mud that we washed off in the crystal clear waters of a mountain lake, well off the beaten track. Highlights in the North: our fantastic train journey through the night to Lao Cai; the charming hill town Sapa established by the French in 1922; the ‘Tran Tam Pass’ at 1,900 metres and the ‘Tu Le Valley’, only populated by a few hill tribes, which we passed as we wound down to the Nghia Lo valley floor. In the Mai Chau valley we had a delightful overnight stay with a local family in their stilt house, pampered with a great home-cooked dinner and lot’s of homemade rice Vodka. A cultural must is a boat trip to the grottos and caves of Phong Na, a UNESCO world heritage site where local civilians and military sheltered from incessant bombing during the American war. Fortunately, as we went further south, the weather warmed up considerably. The climate in Southern Vietnam is much more like that of Thailand: humid, hot and
balmy! Along the way, we passed a number of intersections where the bulk of North Vietnam’s foot soldiers crossed into Laos. Highlights in the South: Hue, the former imperial capital of feudal Vietnam; China Beach in Da Nang, where the first US marines landed in 1965 and the charming World Heritage listed Hoi An - a major trading centre in SE Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries. Quite apart from the beauty of the city and world heritage listing, the beach is great, the atmosphere is relaxed colonial French and we couldn’t hope for a better spot to mingle with the locals and rest our sore derrieres. Towards the end of the tour, I was particularly excited to visit the Viet Kong tunnel complex close to Ho Chi Minh City, as well as its shooting range where I tested my skills using a Russian AK-47 rifle and other weapons. However, what impressed me most were not the remnants of war, but the traffic in former Saigon. I thought it was hectic in Bangkok, but in Ho Chi Minh it is absolutely crazy. The city is home to around 7 million inhabitants, and they all travel around on motorbikes in swarms that look like locusts!
To my delight, I found some very well preserved examples of French colonial architecture and some excellent French restaurants. Who would have thought it was possible to enjoy pure and authentic French “l’Art de Vivre” in South Vietnam? Our tour ended officially with a sumptuous dinner at the chic Temple Club, followed by drinks at the roof top bar of the Caravelle Hotel, a former watering hole for journalists during the war. The night ended with witty anecdotes and fond memories of the past 14 days. Everybody around the table agreed that Ultimoto Adventures does indeed provide the ultimate motorcycle touring adventure, and that we all want more of it! One thing’s for sure; we’ll all get together again soon, as we’ve already signed up for our next tour! Like last year, it doesn’t matter that I was only a passenger in a sidecar! What matters is to be able to get away from it all from time to time, letting the spirit flow and emerging into a world full of fun, freedom, nature and maximum adventure. by Glenn R. Wallis
Vitality, identity and stylishness beyond the usual... that’s what many of us Fashion Gurus are busy looking for. But whether we find it, alas, is quite another matter. And with the fashion circuit being so far from Samui, one might give up all hope and not even bother looking on a small tropical isle. But that’s precisely the charm of Chandra, for here, there are two brave souls putting together creations and collections that have a voice of their own, and are wearable not only while on holiday, but will also make a dramatic statement back home. The Chandra concept is a compilation of unique fashion designs and accessories manufactured from natural fibres within different countries in Asia. Concept creators Dana and Barak seek to achieve a transformation of what we are wearing, integrating feelings and aspects from different cultures and influences from around the globe. There are some fabulous finds to be had at Chandra’s two shops, with chic and slinky clothing bearing feminine yet simple designs, gorgeous and dependable, and with an array of style ranging from the exotic to tribal influences. Chandra is the brainchild of Barak and Dana, who travel every couple of months to collect new ideas, clothing and designs for their shops. Their eclectic style blends Asia with Europe, and the fusion is distinctive and brilliantly achieved.

Environment & Hope
International Year of
Biodiversity The year 2010 has been officially named as the International Year of Biodiversity, by the United Nations Environment Programme. 2010 had originally been set as a landmark year by governments back in 2002, by which time they had hoped to achieve significant reductions in the rates of biodiversity loss and resulting poverty. Current assessments indicate that the goals set have not been reached, and this has spurred the UNEP to bring Biodiversity into the spotlight in a continued effort to make progress. The International Year of Biodiversity is meant to help raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity through activities and events in many countries, as well as to influence decision makers and “to elevate biological diversity nearer to the top of the political agenda.” In a show of commitment by governments, ministers of the Environment met in Indonesia on February the 26th 2010, where the Nusa Dua declaration was issued, the first declaration in over a decade. The Nusa Dua declaration pledges to step up the global response to the major environmental and sustainability challenges of this generation, and emphasises the importance of biodiversity and the need to tackle climate change. Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary and UNEP Executive Director stated, “Faced with the continued erosion of the natural environment, the persistent and emerging challenges of chemical pollution and wastes, and the overarching challenge of issues such as climate change, the status quo is not an option and change is urgently needed. This change starts with recognition that the way we are managing the environmental dimension of sustainable development is currently too complex and fragmented. Change is needed here, and the ministers signalled their determination to realise this through a political process. But the ministers also recognised that action towards a Green Economy, one able to meet multiple challenges and seize multiple opportunities, is taking route in economies across the globe. Accelerating this is a key element of the Nusa Dua Declaration and one that can direct future action towards realising the kinds of transitions needed on a planet of six billion people, rising to nine billion by 2050.” The term Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth and includes all organisms and species, their genetic variation and the web of different communities and ecosystems that exist. The Earth’s current biodiversity is a product of more than 3.5 billion years of evolution and consists of millions of distinct biological species.

by Daniel Coutts
Human activity however is causing the rate of biodiversity loss to be greatly accelerated, with estimated extinction of species occurring at the rate of one every 20 minutes, which is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. This is the equivalent of between 10,000 and 100,000 species becoming extinct each year. The findings of a 2009 biodiversity study by International Union for Conservation of Nature found that of the 47,677 species assessed - 17,291 are deemed to be at serious risk, and that 21% of all known mammals, 30% of all known amphibians, 12% of all known birds, 28% of reptiles, 37% of freshwater fishes, 70% of plants and 35% of invertebrates assessed so far, are under threat. The causes of loss of biodiversity are attributed to habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution, human over population and overharvesting. There are many consequences of the reduction in biodiversity effecting mankind, some of which include a lack of clean water, less fish in the sea as a food source, lack of forests for food, plant medicine and building material, soil erosion, increased flood risks, increased adverse weather conditions and climate change, and in certain parts of the world - reduced income and livelihood for local people. Koh Samui is not immune to the negative impact of Biodiversity loss and suffers from problems such as a lack of drinking water, deteriorating coral reefs, reduced soil fertility and increased soil erosion and flooding, as a result of increased development. This is because increased development causes a reduction in plant vegetation, which reduces the natural root systems that help to maintain soil moisture. This leads to dry and arid soil conditions. When it does rain, the lack of root systems and plant matter are unable to hold the soil in place resulting in landslides, flooding at lower levels, and increased sediment washing into the ocean, in turn suffocating and killing the surrounding reefs. It was the need for a greater awareness for ongoing sustainable tourism in Koh Samui and an effort to raise funds to help restore, rehabilitate and protect the island that was behind the second annual Re-Earth festival on February 25th -26th. A two day jungle and beach party that saw around 5,000 revellers pass through, and was headlined by some of Sweden’s hottest music acts. Working with partners such as the UNEP and local organisations such as The Green Island Project and the Forest Ministry, various schemes are being implemented to try to solve these problems. They include, building small dams at high attitudes to prevent the rain water from running straight down to lower levels, helping to slow the rate at which the water flows helping to reduce soil erosion, floods and landslides, and increases soil moisture.
This in turn leads to increased plant life and vegetation, and less sediment reaching the sea and damaging coral reefs. The dams also increase the ground water levels helping to provide locals with water all year round, as well as holding surface water similar to a water well. The benefits to the soil condition also assist local agriculture, helping to make the soil more suitable for growing fruit plantations and other types of plant crops. The Green Island Project is also piloting prototypes of small hydro-electric power stations with enough energy generated per dam to power one or two surrounding households. Currently there are many expensive and polluting diesel generators being used by families in the higher regions of Samui. 652 dams have already been built on Koh Samui and the target is to build a total of 8,000. The cost of one large dam, capable of holding 500 cubic meters of surface water and more than 50,000 cubic meters of groundwater is calculated to be 50,000 THB, including all labour. Additionally, working in partnership with The Samui Mermaid Group that consists of around 180 local fishermen, the project also aims to create 2km of artificial reef in an effort to restore the surrounding marine life, and help to contribute to Samui having sustainable long-term fisheries. Using large cement blocks, this tried and tested approach is inexpensive, and providing that sea conditions are good, should result in the formation of new coral reefs in the next 3-5 years. The cost for 2km of cement blocks including labour is 150,000 THB. There are also plans to restore forest in some of the worst affected areas of soil erosion. Governments are due to reconvene in June, halfway through the International Year of Biodiversity, where preparations for a landmark conference in Brazil, called Rio Plus 20 will be made, two decades after the original Rio Earth Summit was created. Let’s hope that Koh Samui will be a shining example of localized action being taken to work towards a wider global solution to the pressures placed on biodiversity and climate change.

Guilty Treat or
Pleasure?
by Jo Rowkins
Do you eat your ice cream or drink your glass of wine with a guilty feeling? Do you find pleasure in these things, or do you feel they have a hold on you? Bringing consciousness into all that you do frees you from any bondage you may have to a particular food or drink. Feeling that something is “bad” will create feelings of guilt. Alternatively, convincing yourself that eating three cream cakes is “good” for you, and then finding a spare tyre around your waist, will make you feel bad. So how can we enjoy life’s pleasures in a beneficial way?
26
www.siammap.com
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Nothing is bad standing alone, but always in relation to what you wish to achieve. Let’s take coffee as an example. I am asked regularly in my work as a Health Consultant, “Is coffee bad?” I say, “Do you have fluctuating energy levels? Do your moods swing? Do you have sleep disturbances? Do you suffer anxiety? Do you use coffee because you need an energy boost?” If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s likely that coffee isn’t doing you much good right now. If you choose to increase your energy and get a better night’s sleep, then you could say that coffee is “bad” for you. On the other hand, if you don’t rely on your cup of coffee for energy, drink good quality coffee and simply enjoy the coffee experience, or have even made it into a daily ritual of “me time,” then it could be considered a “good” thing, something that is serving you without being detrimental to your health. The same can be said for cakes. What sort of cakes do you eat? Why do you eat them? Do you over-eat them? Do you use them for emotional purposes? You could be eating a delicious, healthy carrot cake baked lovingly with quality ingredients, or you could be eating, what I would call “a dirty cake,” loaded with refined sugar, bad fats and additives made in a huge factory somewhere that has been sitting on a supermarket shelf in a packet for weeks on end. The difference between these two cakes is remarkable!
The Sensual Pleasures of Life and How to Enjoy Them • Moderation is the key. • Enjoy what you do and choose the best of everything. • Choose quality over quantity. Avoid processed “treats.” • Eat cakes that contain whole-wheat flour and little sugar. Or bake your own using dried fruits for sweetness. • Drink organic coffee, and never on an empty stomach. One to two a day, and no more. • Drink sensibly and choose quality red wine for its antioxidant content. • Drink your vodka or gin with soda water and a squeeze of fresh lemon instead of tonic or Coke. • Swap high sugar chocolate bars for minimum 70% cocoa (the dark stuff) or even better, opt for raw Cacao. • Instead of ice cream, eat fruit “softies” - simply press frozen fruit through a juicer or blender. • Identify your “trigger foods” and keep a food diary to see how you are feeling around food. • See a nutritionist to get the low-down on what may be affecting your health and how to make healthier changes without sacrificing your taste buds. The spiritual master, Osho, spoke to his students about making everything you do a meditation, even smoking a cigarette. The simple act of being totally aware and “in the moment” with the smoking of it, will bring an enhanced connection to it. You are likely to notice that many of the cigarettes you smoke don’t make you feel so good, so only sparking up when you are consciously aware and in enjoyment of it, will naturally make you smoke less. So, embrace the sensual pleasures of life, but do so with joy, wisdom and with a connection to your own inner health and vitality. Look at how you are feeling and find your balance.

A Little Insight into Fractional Ownership As demand for holiday homes increases, a growing number of perspective buyers are realizing that owning a home that they only use for one or two months a year is not entirely logical. In response to this, an alternative known as Fractional Ownership is rapidly gaining in popularity. Samui Holiday Magazine recently sat down with Samui Resident and Consultant, Robert Pestello, who is currently based at Beach Republic, to learn more about the industry.

What exactly is Fractional Ownership? In the simplest terms, Fractional Ownership is a percentage share in an asset. Usually that asset has a high monetary value. Rather than purchasing an asset outright, one acquires a fraction of it - and for a far smaller investment. FlexJet is an excellent example. Many astute businesspersons have realized that while they travel frequently, they do not fly often enough to justify purchasing a private jet outright. By acquiring a share in FlexJet, they are able to enjoy the convenience of ownership, without the expense and hassles. This, in a nutshell, is Fractional Ownership.
Isn’t that like Timeshare? No. While there are some similarities, some very significant differences really make them two completely different products. Timeshare is simply the right to use time in a resort and that right usually expires after 20 to 25 years. Fractional Ownership is entirely different in that an asset is actually, as the name suggests, owned. The fractional interest can be sold, rented, and gifted to family or others. And as the value of the entire asset increases, so does the value of the fractional interest.
How does this compare to sole ownership?
Firstly, once the initial excitement wears off, many people find that owning a vacation property becomes more of a burden than a pleasure. To begin with, you have costs associated with taxes, maintenance, upkeep and security. Then you have the headache of finding someone to look after the property when you are away. And if you choose to rent it out, finding tenants who are willing to vacate the premises when you choose to visit, can be challenging – not to mention looking after them once they move in. In Fractional Ownership the owner simply enjoys the use of his asset and leaves these more mundane tasks to the Management Company. Secondly, since the total expense is shared between 12 or more owners, for a much smaller investment this allows ownership of a far superior property with a higher standard of living.
What options are on offer at Beach Republic?
The most popular by far is our two-bedroom private pool villa. The Penthouse, which was just recently completed, has also been in demand. One fraction at Beach Republic is 28 nights. Many of our owners have elected to purchase multiple fractions for their own use and as an investment. For more information visit BeachRepublicEstates.com or contact Robert Pestello at robert@beachrepublic.com or by phone at 08 9011 9538.

Most parents view the education of their children as a priority and a way in which their offspring can reach their full potential. Getting taught the right things, at the right stages in life, and by the right people is of paramount importance if the child is to attain the academic qualifications required for a successful career path. When Samui Centre of Learning opened in January of 2004, it was the vision of its founders that the School would be a place where children could receive the highest quality education, delivered by qualified teachers in an environment that would provide each child with the opportunity to confidently build on their individual talents; hence the school slogan “Educating the Mind Nurturing the School.” This ethos has remained a constant throughout the development of the School and is a testament to its success. From its small beginning in a Thai style wooden house with only two students, the School has now moved premises and has over 130 children. The new School premises, which opened in September 2009, brings a new dimension to the school. In addition to being purposely built, the facilities include a science lab, gymnasium, swimming pool, sports field and two playgrounds. There are 12 modern, well equipped classrooms, a library, computer suite, Thai language room and a first aid room. All in all, the facilities now match the level and quality of the teaching staff and the curriculum offered to pupils.
34
www.siammap.com
The development of the School does not, however, end here. The School is close to attaining International School status and will soon become accredited with Cambridge International Examinations. There are also plans in place to develop the Secondary part of the School, which currently goes to Year 7. The owners of the School are excited about the future but will only introduce the new stages of education when the facility is fully equipped to run them at the professional standard required. A facility such as this relies heavily on parental confidence, and therefore the owners will never make promises they can’t keep. The first term in the new premises has been a great success, all the children and staff have settled in well and the future is looking bright. With the teaching team growing stronger each year and the continuation of policies such as keeping the class sizes small, ensuring each child has an individual education plan and maintaining the family atmosphere, the School continues to go from strength to strength. Anyone who would like to visit the School will receive a warm welcome. Dear Diary, Have you been listening? I really couldn’t help myself; the disgusting work of having to pick up all of that elephant dung was killing me. My sense of smell will never be the same again. I just couldn’t do it any more! I don’t know where to start… Okay, now you remember that I was given community service for getting into a fight with that monkey named Little Chicken right? Or was it Chicken Little? Anyway… over the past 21 days I’ve been held by the authorities on Koh Samui, and forced to clean up after the elephants, making their daily trips to and from work, following them with a huge bag and a shovel made of bamboo. The Thai man that was enrolled to help me, has planned for us the greatest escape ever. We designed over the course of the past few weeks how we would do it, and it all boiled down to timing. The plan was perfect, it would simply depend on whether or not we had the guts to follow through with it. We did, dear Diary…We did! Here’s how it all happened. During the evening shifts of scooping up poop, we would take the bags of dung and then put them into a pile beside a large dump truck. Thai workers would tie ropes around the large sacks; a crane would pick them up with a shovel like that on a backhoe, and place them into the truck. Our plan was to crawl inside one of these bags and hide until the truck took the bags to the dumping area. There was no way any of these workers would bother to question what exactly was inside these bags, if we were to remain perfectly still. Of course, there was the problem of having to deal with not only the smell of the feces, but also with the fact that we would be covered in it.

There was one setback that arose, that we hadn’t counted on. With all of this dung in one bag, it naturally began to heat up. Not only were we sweating half to death while we waited patiently inside our individual sacks, but the dung began to soften. Mixed together with our sweat, and the liquid that oozed from the remains, we began to sink into the middle of our discreet hiding spots. The Thai man, ironically, whose name was Pooey, was shuffling around so madly in his bag during the transportation between the ground and the truck that I was certain we would be exposed. The getaway vehicle made its way to our destination site, opened its gate, and we majestically slid off the dump truck to our freedom. By this time, darkness had fallen across Samui, and we dug our way out of our bags into the refreshing breezes of the night air.
When I looked towards Pooey, the sight of him shocked me. Only the whites of his eyes were visible. Needless to say, Pooey began to cry. Having come from a culture where remaining as white as possible indicates status, and one in which cleanliness is next to godliness, I understood his unspoken sadness. I, on the other hand, was a travelling back-packer, and had become accustomed to sleeping on the beaches, and within accommodations that are far below a 5-star standard. We made our way down to the beach, followed by a throng of curious street dogs the entire way, their noses sniffing at the air, trying to discern what creature of the jungle had stumbled upon their territory. In the cover of darkness we washed ourselves off from the escape, and put our heads together once more to continue with our mission. We decided that it would be the most intelligent manoeuvre to separate at this point. We both have seen many movies where convicts remain together only to be discovered by search parties, so we parted ways, perhaps never to see each other again. We exchanged e-mail addresses and went about in our own directions, leaving our destiny in the hands of fate. I have to say, dear Diary, that the life of an escaped convict has become sort of appealing to me. Thoughts of James Dean run through my head, as I make my way towards the unknown roads that lie ahead of me. My motorbike does not have the appearance of a rebel however, with its bright yellow paint, and loud muffler roaring through the night. Actually, a friend of mine once said that I looked more like a wasp, making his way back home after a day of collecting waspy things, or whatever it is that they do. I made the 6am ferry from Samui without a trace of the police on my tail. I supposed that they had not been made aware of my absence without leave as of yet, and I was certainly not going to stick around until they did. I picked up a map from the ferry, and planned my route to the western shores of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Inconspicuously in the boat’s head, I cut my hair, in the hopes that it would alter my appearance. I now sport much lighter locks of my golden crown, and a more youthful countenance than before. Unfortunately, not so discreet was the odour that emanated from my body from the perilous escape I had endured, and fellow passengers continuously performed double takes at me in passing. I hope that for any chances of a romantic nature, this smell dissolves over time. I am free dear Diary! I will write to you soon from my future island of exile. Gray

YachtRegatta Now known as the Sawadee.com Regatta, the event is in its second year of title partnership with Sawadee.com, one of Thailand’s leading inbound travel companies. The regatta will take place on the sun-drenched island of Koh Samui from May 31st to June 5th. For the 9th consecutive year, this leading lifestyle and sporting event will attract competitive and social sailors from around the world. The fiveday Regatta is one of Asia’s most glamorous sailing events and is also part of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championships. Fabulous sailing conditions prevailed at the 2009 regatta, so much so, that a round-theisland race was attempted for the first time in the event’s history. In addition to the competitive sailing, the Sawadee.com Regatta is about fun parties and is firmly established as a ‘must attend’ event on the international sailing circuit. The 2010 Regatta welcomes new event partners ‘Prana Resort’ and ‘Beach Republic’, as well as the debut of a golf tournament that will tee off at the island’s premier ‘Santiburi Samui Country Club’. ‘B1 Villas & Spa’, ‘Dhevatara Properties’ and ‘Samui Villas & Homes’, all return to the Regatta as event partners. Headquarters for the event for the 9th time will again be the ‘Centara Grand Beach Resort’, which has been the home of the regatta since its conception, welcoming crews from far and wide year after year. Spectator boats will provide a unique opportunity for members of the public to get ‘up close and personal’ with all of the ‘on-water’ sailing action. Public tickets will also be available for the legendary ‘off-water’ parties that occur most evenings during the Regatta featuring renowned bands and fabulous entertainment.
38
www.siammap.com
An added bonus is that the regatta has teamed up with the Samui Jazz Festival this year, ensuring great entertainment for spectators who fly in from all corners of the world. The Sawadee.com Regatta 2010 will also see the third running of the ‘Samui Junior Sailing Squadron Challenge’, giving local children from the island the opportunity to be out on the water and experiencing the excitement of competitive yacht racing. This challenge will no doubt provide competitors for future Sawadee.com Regattas to be contested on the pristine waters off Chaweng Beach. As an on-going commitment, the regatta’s organizing committee provides support to youth sailing on Koh Samui by contributing towards acquiring sailing equipment. The event has affectionately been referenced in some circles as ‘the Regatta that gives back’, a title due in part to its efforts in 2009 to both cleaning up the Samui beach environment, and to supporting children on the island to receive an education through the introduction of a new scholarship fund. ‘The Sawadee.com Regatta BlueWater Scholarship Fund’ will again be one of the ways that the Regatta supports the Samui community that acts as its host every year. The Regatta provides an ideal mix of Thai charm and world-class sailing in a location that crews jump at the chance to return to year-after-year. This year on the water, the skipper receiving the most top placings on the eight regatta Asian circuit will also be crowned Asian Yachting Champion Skipper. a Property view
By Claudio Cerquetti
There is a vast difference between taking a picture and making a photograph Asia Sense, On the Hill
When I arrived at Asia Spirit Lodge on the mountains near Baan Taling Ngam at the South-West of the island, the extraordinary atmosphere of the area immediately captured me. The image I experienced was aerial, like flying above it all with more than 180-degree views of the islands of Koh Tan, Koh Mudsum and the mainland lazily drifting on the horizon. The access to this property is from the main road, near the Villa la Kosta entrance (opposite side), and is well indicated by a photographic sign showing what you will find above the hill. The sign was fashioned from the best shots I have done combining subjects and colours, utilising the red and gold of the interiors, alternating with deep blue panoramic images that my Fantasyatwork team and I took over the course of several photo sessions. Possibly one of the greatest highlights of this property is that every time we arrived at the property we were facing a different natural show. Being so high above sea level here creates infinite possibilities in weather conditions, on both a super wide angle and deep in the view. Much to my delight, the limitless colours everyday and at every hour varies in tone and intensity. I have shot several times here, completing photographic works for some stunning villas within the premises, and for the advertising of the hotel itself. We started from the sunrise pastel colour tones coming from east, and tracked how the atmosphere evolves into a full spectrum of developing colours.
42
www.siammap.com
We followed up with our panorama Virtual Tour production, which involves shooting a 360-degree view: panorama in front, hotel facing it, with a final interactive effect that can also be seen as a still panorama, in our fantasyatwork.com company website. While working on the interiors of the Asia Spirit Lodge and its renowned restaurant, we recognised, as its name suggests, that it is a treasure box of ethnic items coming from Asia. Different Asian characters are harmonically combined to create an “Asia Sense Feeling.” To enhance the natural beauty of this scenery, we chose to shoot with three camera units for 21 Megapixel files, often reaching image size of several hundred megabytes. When achieving this technique it is easy to get a great amount of images within the main image. In fact, a super huge file can be cropped into several detailed cropped files of different shapes. With this technology, you can achieve many sharp portrait shape images from a very high-resolution panorama. This opportunity also creates more value for money, for full advantage of the companies working with us. In the interior shooting, we carried on by using 32 extra micro spotlights and fibre optics for a discrete lighting enhancement. We have rebalanced the contrast of gold reflecting decorations with matte dark artworks, allowing the purple hues to go hand in hand with the deep blue of the bird eye views, and displaying the decorative items, which the owner has carefully chosen to interact with the essence of his establishment.
There’s a lot of taste and exclusivity in this creative project. The discrete complex is composed by a main house, which also includes the panoramic restaurant, a few rooms, and the lounge under an amazingly large tree that reminded me the Avatar 3D movie experience. Resting above an infinity pool, where it seems to swim and fly at the same time in its place well above the horizon line, this location is a must see. For the sales and marketing of Asia Spirit Lodge, we have been shooting several categories of rooms and bungalows, always astonished by the combination of refinement inside, as well as in the outside views. The selection of photos compiled by our photographic company did catch the well-calibrated feeling of the place, and we suggest to everyone interested in a visually spectacular experience, to go and see the real thing. After all, despite the fact that we are professionals in every aspect of the term, the best part of beauty is that which no picture can completely express. “High quality photos makes sell your product on the other side of the globe. For an audience of internet buyers, regardless of the actual look of a property... who has the better photo wins! Because the people can’t compare the real product, but just the photos. And who offers the best image... wins! Claudio shows its clients products under the best light: this is what he has done every day, for 25 years. Saboey Resort
puts Fun
intoFashion The Saboey Resort and Villas recently hosted an astounding Bikini Beach Wear Fashion Event, the likes of which the island has never seen. General Manger Emmanuel Lavasseur has wanted to host an event of this style for quite some time. He commented,
“I felt that a Fashion Show was long overdue on the Island, and of course displaying Beachwear and Bikinis is something that attracts most people holidaying on Samui. Saboey Resort and Villas provides the perfect setting as it lies directly on the beach and within a serene and private environment. I received great feedback from my initial invites to VIP guest internationally, from Bangkok and locally.”
The local community, businesses, resorts and fashion enthusiasts were amongst the main guests on the evening. A turnout of around 200+ spectators enjoyed the experience and the unique designs from GENEVIEVE by Genevieve Dejaeghere and STRING TONG by Cedric Cador. Clothing and footwear was also available for sale during the show. To aid in inspiring this event, the atmosphere was complimented by Resident DJ Adam Matson, who initiated the fun with a splash of cool and delightful music, setting the mood for frolicking in the evening glow at Saboey. A Buffet was also made available, prepared by the resort’s Executive Chef Chainiwat Cheepsatischaikun. VIP guests danced the night away while being treated to cocktails, wine and a selection of Tapas. A fantastic finale was given as a send off with fireworks and a large round of applause for all of the Models and Designers. A word with brigitte and Werner
Rescue Centre Koh Samui – DRCS “I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. They fight for honour at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvellous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying.” by Glenn R. Wallis
If you had the pleasure of visiting the island of Koh Samui 15 to 20 years ago, you probably were very aware that the primary wild animal living on this tropical oasis was of the canine persuasion. Brought here by travellers from Southeast Asia and beyond as protection, companion and sometimes even for food, Thai dogs populated the island without restraint. In the early 1970’s, as backpackers broke the trail for what today has the possibilities of becoming a 5-Star holiday resort sanctuary, there was freedom beyond measure for the packs of dogs that patrolled the lands. However, as man sports a fickle affinity for the love of nature and wildlife, the dog population became somewhat of a burden to both guests and residents on this island in the midst of the Gulf of Siam.

After

www.siammap.com
Hotels and resorts were virtually surrounded by the wandering hunter-gatherers that swarmed, seeking the attraction of friendship and lured by the aromas of 5-Star provisions. Options of eradication became impending. Poison and traps were set as safeguards. Man’s best friend was facing a promising disharmony in their historic place at the right hand side of their master. Brigitte and Werner Gomm were here when the discussions began of paradise preservation, but instead of joining the forces that abolished these despicable four-legged fleabags, they embraced them. Utilising their own resources, time and money. - Give us a good picture of what the island was like when you first came to visit. Was there a true harmony between the budding resorts and the free dogs that ran on the beaches of Samui? Or was there more than just a feeling that they were a nuisance from the start? “When we first came to Koh Samui about 20 years ago, the island was covered with homeless dogs and cats, and it was often dangerous to walk the beach at night. These hungry packs of dogs attacked everything that moved. It was always heartbreaking, for us as holidaymakers, to know that the day we had to leave the island was most likely the last day we would ever see the dogs we had been feeding over the course of our vacation. Hardly any dog had the chance to escape the killing. The Government had no choice but to get rid of them. They poisoned thousands of dogs and cats, usually twice a year during the low season. The locals were informed via loudspeakers the night before.” - On the 1st of April, the DRCS celebrates their 11th Anniversary. What have been the challenges over the years for the Rescue Centre? “It’s been a huge challenge to neuter as many dogs and cats as possible, so that the government has no more reason to poison all of these innocent animals. And of course convincing the locals and residents on the island to support the DRCS and “Help Us Help.”
We would like to mention that we have given about 40,000 rabies vaccines for the safety of the people and the animals in the last 10 years. In 2001, the Minister of Public Health visited our shelter, and was very proud to declare Koh Samui as the only rabies free zone at the time.” - Who are your main sponsors? What support do you get from the local Government on Samui? “We receive no financial support from the government, BUT due to our intervention into the issues they also don’t disturb us in any way, gracefully allowing us to do what benefits us all. The DRCS is an inclusive Thai organisation with a Thai President, Manager and Employees. All the foreigners involved are on a volunteer basis and receive no money for their work and time. Silvana from Switzerland, has been collecting considerable amounts of donations in Switzerland and areas over the last few years, which makes her one of our main sponsors. Everyone who helps us is a hero in our eyes!
We also receive assistance from a few animal foundations in Europe where we apply for funds. And an immediate source of sponsorship comes from the animal loving Tourists of course….” - What is your role in changing the possible future for the free dogs of Samui? “It is now a pleasure for the tourists to spend their holiday on the beaches of Samui and very rarely have to watch any suffering or dying animals. And if they do, they have now a number to call for help. In most other parts of Thailand this is not possible, and I am reminded daily how much has changed for the tourists, and how much more relaxed they can now spend their holiday.” - Tell us about the Volunteer Program that helps you help. “We always welcome animal friends who want to help. Unfortunately, we are not in the position to pay for any work, accommodation or food. The volunteers are free to work when and wherever they want. Most volunteers quickly find out what they want, or what they are able to do. For most, it’s quite a challenge to enter one of our big outside compounds at the shelter, since all the dogs come running at once ‘asking’ for attention. Of course, it is also possible to get educated at the DRCS by becoming a long-term volunteer. ‘Learn to Help’ is our motto! If we don’t help, nobody will. Our present long-term volunteers have over the last 5 and more years, learned how to deal with an animal in need of help, and operate now in the name of the DRCS at the shelter and all around the island.”
There are tragedies surrounding Samui in regards to the issues with dog problems. Koh Phangan for example, had an unfortunate fire at their Rescue Centre followed by a complete purge of any free dogs on the island. Has Samui ever faced such challenges? “Thankfully, we have never experienced such a tragedy in the history of the DRCS. It could have a lot to do with the fact that the entirety of the DRCS is owned by Thai’s, including our land, cars motorbikes and so on. We do want to stress that still countless dogs are poisoned or shot, if planned or not, we don’t know. We have experienced that many dogs have disappeared from building sites, after the workers left. We have now started to put up signs in Thai and Burmese, to inform people that the dogs were vaccinated and treated against mange., and therefore the dog meat will be inedible and may be poisonous for them.” - How can visitors help? “Have a look around the place where you stay and keep an eye open for dogs and cats that have not been neutered. Every neutered dog has a green tattoo in the ear. Help us help by reporting injured dogs and cats to the DRCS! You call – we help! Feed the dogs and cats on the island, but please, no stolen food from the hotel-buffet, as you can imagine that will only cause trouble. We celebrate our 11th anniversary on the 1st April and everyone is welcome to visit our Dog and Cat Rescue shelter in Baan Taling Ngam. Come have a snack and a drink with us and learn how the DRCS really works. Our 4-legged friends will be happy to greet you!” “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man.” Mark Twain

Bluewater International School’s Scholarship program received a huge boost recently when one of its recipients returned from a very successful National Taekwondo Championship. Yanky and the Bluewater Samui Taekwondo team received numerous trophies at the annual Taekwondo “Open Championship Competition,” held in Ayutthaya on February 13, 2010. The Bluewater Samui Taekwondo team was awarded eight Gold trophies and a Silver trophy. Khun Pairat Roodbang, Bluewater Taekwondo coach, also received the Excellence Trophy. The competition was a huge success for Bluewater and all were delighted that Yanky, a Year 9 student who joined Bluewater last year on a Sports Scholarship did so well. Support funding was also awarded to the team to cover travel expenses. In addition to Taekwondo, a new Bluewater Sports Scholarship was recently granted to Pat, a very talented football player, who it is hoped will not only be an asset to the Bluewater Football team, but will have the opportunity to develop his sporting ability at the school in the future. The Art of Light
Apollo8 A cascading aura of light beckons passer-by’s from the Lamai Beach Road. Emanating the full spectrum of luminosity from the stars, a plethora of ambient fixtures harness galactic radiances and shine with a unique glow out into the heart of the Lamai Centre. The newest addition to Lamai’s shopping experience and to the delight of ice-cream and sandwich lovers, the Lamai Centre now also boasts Samui’s most unique and extraordinary lighting gallery, Apollo8. Joseph Noble, the owner of Apollo8, shares the exclusive qualities and individual touches that the art pieces from Apollo8 boast. “We have a German designer for all of our lighting fixtures, and the items are made and sourced in Indonesia, hand-made, hand-painted, and for the shopper, hand-picked to suit individual preferences and spaces. The most interesting quality of our lights is that there are no 2 pieces that are identical. So if you’re looking for something extra-special, the only way to really get it is to be here when we open our doors when our new shipments arrive and are unpacked from their shipping containers. To tell you the truth, I’m not even sure exactly what we’re getting. Our German counterpart delivers our pieces and they are chosen by him directly from Indonesia.” Even with new shipments arriving monthly, there has become such a demand for Apollo8 lighting that the majority of the pieces are sold almost upon arrival. “I have home-builders, walk-in clients, and resorts all scouting out our lighting. The pieces are very remarkable in design, and I am not surprised by the popularity that has arisen since our inception.” Perhaps one of the best attributes of these light fixtures is the materials that they are made from. From glass to resins and modified polymers, the fixtures are perfect for shipping due to their light weight. Apollo8 will take care of all of the details for you regarding shipping almost anywhere in the world. “I like to call them Light Sculptures,” indicates Joe “as they simply become a true piece of art in any location, be it in your home, office or fine hotel.” In addition to lighting, Apollo8 also designs custom-made teakwood stands for their lighting, allowing you to mount your new Light Sculpture onto the perfect display to accentuate their beauty. Featuring light paintings and Balinese furniture to complete your surroundings, Apollo8 is a definite must see while shopping on Samui. For more information and the full visual experience visit them at the Lamai Centre, located on the Lamai Beach Road in behind Subway. For Samui Residents, Joe is offering a 10% DISCOUNT for the month of April. Just mention this advertisement to Joe and his Store Manager, the lovely MJ from Mongolia. Earth Hour
at Anantara Koh Samui Earth Hour is a global campaign to showcase what can, and is being done all over the world to combat climate change. Earth Hour is a worldwide initiative showing how individuals, communities, businesses and governments can address the threat of global warming if we resolve to work on it together. Earth Hour unites communities, ushering in a new era of environmental consciousness by encouraging personal accountability and behavioural change to facilitate a low-carbon lifestyle. The highlight of the Earth Hour campaign witnessed the world’s most iconic landmarks go dark for one designated hour, as people across the globe of different races, religions, cultures and socio-demographic turned off their lights, united in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet. Earth Hour 2009 created history as the greatest voluntary action ever witnessed, representing the first-ever global vote. Registrations, polling and energy reduction levels indicate that hundreds of millions of people voted Earth over Global Warming with their light switch in 4159 cities, towns and municipalities across 88 countries, including 73 national capitals and 9 of the world’s 10 most populated cities. Global landmarks that switched off in support included The Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza, Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Acropolis in Athens. Anantara Koh Samui proudly participated during the one hour of darkness to contribute its full support and the following initiatives were taken during the “Earth Hour.”
• All areas including back of the house stood in darkness to join in the celebration of this event from 20:30hrs to 21:30hrs. • A special candle light Gala Dinner was organized on the beach for the guests to join in the celebration. • A special Spa Candle-Light Massage was offered at the Spa. Aries: March 21 - April 19
Football hasn’t been known historically for bringing people together. This month may prove to be the exception to that rule as you’ll fall in love with someone whose head looks very similar to a football. An American football that is.
Taurus: April 20 - May 20
Prepare yourself, because your life is set for the biggest change you’ve seen in a long time. Your love life is ready to flourish, and all because you bought that wonderful hat the other day. You did buy it didn’t you? Oh, tell me you bought the hat!
Gemini: May 21 - June 20
Scorpio: October 23 - November 21
Romance is definitely in the air this month, although you may find it clouded by other emotions, or possibly smells. Change is always for the good, ask any transsexual. To make yourself feel beautiful, hug a tree, kiss a baby, read a classic, and then take a long train journey. After that, you’ll still be an ugly bugger, but you’ll be so tired you won’t even care.
Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21
The best way to undo your mistakes is to stand up, take a good look around, and then shout “I’m Sorry! Today has been one almighty mess and I’m very much to blame. If you need to give anyone a good kicking, I’m your person. Please form a line, there will be no velvet ropes so no pushing. Thank you.”
Cancer: June 21 - July 22
Capricorn: December 22 - January 19
Leo: July 23 - August 22
Dentist’s teeth are not always as great as you’d think. Next time you’re in the chair, instead of looking at the ceiling or down the nurses’ top, have a good look inside the dentist’s mouth. You’ll be surprised, shocked and either intimidated or aroused.
Aquarius: January 20 - February 18
Monkeys can make awesome presents for someone you love. Be aware that they might poo in a loved one’s hat and/or coat pockets. Spank. It’s a word that will not only recur surprisingly often this month, but will also make you pray for better, more simple times.
You may be feeling sporty this month, but don’t spend all that money on new sports gear and equipment. You are likely to lose interest in this newfound “passion” within 20 days. No-one likes to be told they have VD, which is why, as a doctor, you are ecstatic whenever you have the opportunity to ruin someone’s day.
Virgo: August 23 - September 22
Pisces: February 19 - March 20
This month you might see a need to call attention to yourself, and I’m always happy to recommend faxing semi-nude pictures of yourself to random numbers. Take everything you’ve got and run like the wind. Bad things are afoot.

When I tell you that it’s ‘cryptic’, I basically mean that I made it up. There is a lot of cryptic anger in your brain. Douse it with cool, flavoursome beer. You may feel like starving yourself this month in order to lose some weight, but don’t forget about the beer.
All the advice I could share with you would blow your mind and leave nothing to the imagination. Duty calls, and your duty is to make people aware that you are not who they think you are. Perhaps it’s true that you’re not the immense romantic you once were.
Believe everything you read today. You gullibility may cause you problems later this week. You will feel an overwhelming desire to kiss everyone in sight this month. Only you have the ultimate power to decide how to continue. Not me. Only you. Start reading from the beginning...

When opening the door for a stranger, take care to notice any loose change that they may drop so that you can slam the door in their face, grab the money, and then run for dear life. While you may think that this horoscope is completely useless... I have to admit - I have a very guilty secret. You see, all horoscopes are completely useless. There - I said it.
