The Art of Squishing Sand between Your Toes I have always wanted to be a Pirate. For as long as I can remember the lure of living on a ship and setting anchor of off the coast of some deserted island had been the base for all of my childhood dreams. I would often wander out to our little swimming pool in the back yard, fill it up from the garden hose, throw in some sand from the ground, and sit on the edge of it with my feet inside, and make the world around me disappear as I rubbed my feet through the pebbles and rocks, squishing the muck between my toes. I would then embark on a journey into the South China Seas. I had all of the necessities of being a Pirate. I had the ripped up clothes, a fake parrot on a stick and even a patch for my eye. But I come from humble beginnings, and using my hand as a patch had to suffice. It was quite handy, my patch, as I always had it with me. Even in school, I could put it on for a moment to daydream about my backyard water world. It only became a bit of a problem when I expanded my costume and eliminated my hand to replace it with a hook. I would do and say Piratey things. I lived my dream with my feet in the sand. It wasn’t until I announced at the crack of dawn one day, bursting into my parents bedroom, fully costumed with hook and all, “Avast ye Mateys! Where’s my grub?!” that my days of being a pirate came to an end. This morning, as I sat on the beach in front of our Thai wooden house, with the sand finding its way once again between my toes, I remembered in full vivid colour my childhood amusements. I looked out to sea, my Longtail Boat drifted before me, anchored in the placid calm of dawn, and birds swooped to indulge in their morning acrobatics. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my bandana with pirate skulls on it. As I put it on, I noticed a couple sitting down the beach from me. Huddled together, the waves lapping at them and with their feet moving back and forth in the sand, they too were living in the moment inspired by the ambiance of the peace brought by the morning sun awakening the Gulf of Siam. More so, I believe they were enjoying the moment simply through the act they naturally were executing.

There is something about feeling the sand beneath your feet. The sifting and finely granulated particles engulfing you with the warmth of the earth, and the fact that removing your shoes to complete the act becomes almost euphoric. It’s a simple task, and I think that we all do it. The first thing that happens when you reach a beach is to involuntarily stop and take off your shoes, step diligently onto Mother Earth, and let the sand take you on a journey following in the footprints of your childhood dreams. During your visit to our paradise island, of which I now realise I am a true Pirate of, I encourage you to find some time away from the shopping, the haggling and the delicacies that your resort has to offer you. Take a morning away from the crowds, your troubles and worries, and languidly meander out onto the shores of Samui. Take off your shoes and let the sand do the rest. Perfecting the art of squishing sand between your toes is what taking a vacation is all about. And if you really feel like it, let out a bellowing “ARRRRR!!!” So that the world knows that you too are a Pirate once again. Enjoy.

The Challenge
of the Asian Winds The InterContinental Kiteboarding World Cup
March 15-20 2010 by Glenn R. Wallis
I
magine how it feels to speed across the ocean powered by a sail in the sky... Imagine standing on a board watching the kite above you, and Imagine the waves ahead of you as you jump skyward into the air, not just a metre or two, but reaching heights of up to 10 or 12 metres. Imagine hanging in the air for a long moment defying the laws of gravity, and then surfing the winds down onto the water again to rush across the waves. This is Kiteboarding, and it has taken the world by a blustery storm. A diverse cross between Windsurfing, Wakeboarding and Paragliding, riders harness the power of the wind with a large flying kite and use it to pull them across the water with their feet strapped to a small board. Does it sound a little frightening? Perhaps, however those who have challenged the winds of nature have referred to Kiteboarding as an exhilarating phenomenon. Both men
6
www.siammap.com
and women have flocked to this sport on untethered wings, uniting the frenzied waters of the Gulf of Siam with the captivity of the winds within kites made like sails. The sport has captured more than those who naturally are inclined to risk their lives, and seek the pleasures of the thrill of harnessing the powers of Mother Nature. It has captivated an audience worldwide, and allured many from their complacent resting places in life, to change their course as fleetingly as the winds directing their newly acquired kites. Kiteboarding Asia, the original kiteboarding school in Thailand, has succeeded in bringing the PKRA Professional Kiteboarding Tour to Asia for the first time ever. The Professional Kite Riders’s Association (PKRA) and Kiteboarding Asia (KBA) have announced that the first stop on the 2010 pro circuit will be in Thailand’s own Hua Hin. The top ranked professional Kiteboarders from around the globe will glide with the winds at Hua Hin and lift off into this year’s competition. The event will
confidently put Hua Hin on the map for veteran Kiteboarders, and ultimately aid in promoting Thailand as a venue for adventure sports competitions. KBA, Thailand’s first and largest Kite School and retailer, are the organisation responsible for bringing this event to Thailand. Established in 2001, KBA quickly gained a reputation for safety, high quality lessons and the lowest prices on equipment anywhere in the world. Their professionalism has over the years, helped to promote Thailand as a destination for learning Kiteboarding for enthusiasts from the windiest destinations on Earth, and as a perfect holiday hotspot for Kiteboard adventure seekers. Kiteboarding is a relatively young sport, but has claimed recognition as the fastest growing water sport in the world. It began as an obscure hobby in the late 1990’s, and with the development of specialised equipment and dramatic improvements in safety, has transformed Kiteboarding from a fringe activity into a mainstream sport. Only a few years ago, most people had not heard of this dynamic pursuit, and fewer had witnessed the acrobatic aeronautics of the surfers bound by sails to ride the winds. Today, you can find Kiteboarders playing on seaside beaches and lakes all over the world. In Thailand, the Kitesurfing addiction is displayed throughout the Gulf of Siam and beyond, focused in Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phuket and even at the less developed beaches of Chumpon. The sport is easier to learn than it looks, and 90% of Kiteboarding actually involves flying the kite competently. You don’t have to be a muscle builder to learn this sport. While strength helps, once you have mastered flying the kite, it becomes easier. Technique and not strength make a good Kiteboarder. It also explains why women tend to learn the sport better than men do. Women are inclined to work with the kite rather than trying to overpower it and beat it into submission. Kiteboarding can be dangerous, and thus it is highly recommended to learn the sport at an IKO certified Kiteboarding Centre, where they teach you to become a safe and independent Kiteboarder. If you are a confident swimmer with an average fitness level you can learn this sport, but be warned, once you learn, you will gradually spend less time at work and more time chasing the wind and waves. The owners of KBA are true ambassadors of the sport. They strive to make sure beginners learn in a safe environment on the newest equipment, that existing kiters can get the best gear at the lowest price and that observers can enjoy watching the people on the water and get information from KBA staff on the beach. “The bottom line is that we want people to Kiteboard. We are sure they will love the sport as much as we do and it will change their lives for the better. We have been very successful on our own so far, and we know that this PKRA event will expose even more people to Kiting, bring more tourists to Thailand and inspire more people to learn the sport. This event is the next step in promoting our two favorite things; Kiteboarding and Thailand.” There is only one warning that we will provide for you… Once you have stepped into the waters with KBA’s team of qualified instructors, there is no turning back. Your adrenaline will rush as the winds pick your kite up from the shoreline and pull you into a journey that will keep you wanting to come back for more. It is extremely addictive! Don’t say that we didn’t warn you. Visit the official KBA website at www.kiteboardingasia.com. www.siammap.com

Samui in Brief

Samui’s Towns & Beaches
THE ISLAND OF KOH SAMUI has been a hidden treasure for paradise seekers over the past 40 years. Today the beaches remain to be the passion of the island, with resorts and hide-away bungalows spilling out and onto the white sands. Each beach on Samui has maintained its own personality, relating to the area that it lies within. Featured here are some of the highlights of each of these areas for the holiday traveller to enjoy.
Chaweng
The beach is a huge horseshoe of soft sand that offers a spectacular view of the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan. There are a number of good local restaurants and businesses along the beach, as well as located on the main ring road. Mae Nam is home to many of the island’s residential developments with a growing quantity of long-term visitors and expats, giving the area a strong sense of community. The hills behind Mae Nam provide the location for the island’s spectacular world-class golf resort.
Lamai
Bo phut
Big Buddha Beach
Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam
Lamai has often been referred to as Samui’s second beach, but there are many who believe it has a greater beauty than that of Chaweng. The waters are excellent for swimming and the beaches and streets are less crowded. The southern end of the bay features elegant granite boulders while the beach itself seems endless. The nightlife in Lamai hosts some excellent restaurants and bars scattered along its strip. The surrounding area notably hosts some of the islands best spas and health resorts available. If you wander off the beaten track here, you might get a glimpse of some true Thai culture.
If your stay is brief, Big Buddha Beach area offers convenience due to its close proximity to the airport, as well as to boats chartered for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Prices for accommodation and provisions remain reasonable, and there are a growing number of fine dining options to compliment the local Thai restaurants and beach bungalow cuisine. Facilities and services are abundant along the main road, making this one of the best locations for a vibrant night-life.The Big Buddha itself can be seen overlooking the entire area and remains to be the focal attraction.
8
Mae Nam
Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Samui. It is also the largest tourist centre with more than 1.5 million travellers visiting annually. 5 Star luxury resorts share the space with more economical accommodation choices, along with a 5 kilometre street of stalls and shops that sell everything Thailand is famous for. Prices are a little higher here than in other areas of the island, but the range of choices in food, accommodation and entertainment is impressive, making this beach and its surroundings, the center of activity for many visitors.
www.siammap.com
Bo Phut stands out as the only village on Samui that exudes authentic island charm. It consists of a single street lined with traditional shophouses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, sales shops and guesthouses. The distinct designs of the beachside dining sector, as well as the chosen cuisine that is available, have created an exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere. Bo Phut is expanding constantly, generating new wining and dining options every year. Despite its growth, the essential seaside appeal remains, making it one of the island’s most attractive locations.
The unspoiled South-West Coast of Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi has seen the least change of any area on the island. The romantic coastline here overlooks the spectacular Five Islands and Anthong Marine Park. Several excellent beachside seafood restaurants, bungalows and resorts can be found scattered along the coast offering the most idyllic locations to watch the sun setting into the sea. Palms come right down to the water’s edge, dense greenery right up to the sands, with swimming an idyllic experience. Out to sea are the mountains of the mainland, distant and hazy, fading to purple as evening comes.
Hua Thanon
The Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon offers a handful of seafood restaurants, but its main attraction lies in the ancient cultures of the local fishermen. Intricately painted wooden boats are used to this day to catch and deliver fish directly to the local markets. Take a stroll through its market and capture a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s original communities. Beyond Hua Thanon, the southern coast offers some of the most unspoiled natural scenery on Samui. You will find quaint local villages and coconut plantations that have endured the test of time.
Nathon
This is the island’s main administrative centre. All government offices, banks, as well as the main ferry pier are located in Nathon, making it the most important place for communication with the Thai mainland. Nathon also boasts a number of original teak shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more traditional, Chinese influenced Samui life. Any major local events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park in front of the main pier in Nathon. Visitors tend to pass through this beautiful village on their way to either Chaweng or Lamai, missing some of the least expensive shopping on the island. A nightly food market establishes itself here regularly, giving visitors their first taste of the delights available on Samui.
CHOENG MON
Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays, speckled with white sandy beaches upon its coastline. Despite its close proximity to Chaweng, about 15 minutes north and 5 minutes from Big Buddha, the beaches have remained quiet and the waters clean. Choeng Mon’s wide sandy beaches feature a rock formation on one side, and the island of Koh Som that you can easily paddle out to on the other. This is a very family friendly area, with exclusive resorts abundantly situated along the water’s edge. Relatively upmarket, inexpensive accommodation is virtually non-existent in this area. This lesser-known beach is located in a very secluded part of Koh Samui, on the northeast corner of the island where most of the bays have been given over to private residential developments.
Bang rak
This area has become home to some of the most driven entrepreneurs, leaders of business and tourism operators that have ever inhabited the island. The preservation of the ancient village character has been kept a priority, and as the name of Bang Rak translates into ‘The Village of Love’ in the Thai language, so has the charm been reserved that this village emanates. Harbour and home for many of the island’s yachting members, including the speedboat charters and touring vessels that make their way to the neighbouring island’s and the Angthong National Marine Park, this is where you can find day charters to all-inclusive excursions around Samui and beyond. This area is also home to the island’s Optimist sailing Club for children, The Yacht Club, where young sailors are taught in true sailing spirit the art of mastering not only the sea, but themselves, competing in national championships with the best of the best in Thailand, and from around the globe.

Brunei Steeped in Quiet Respect
The 29th ASEAN Tourism Forum brings me to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam. Although established as the gateway to a haven of eco-tourism, Brunei is in fact the best-kept secret of Southeast Asia. The Green Heart of Borneo is comprised of the Malaysian states of Sabah, Sarawak and Indonesia’s Kalimantan. Driven by the theme ‘ASEAN - The Heart of Green,’ this event was hosted by Brunei Tourism and organized by TTG Asia Media Private Ltd. More than 1,400 delegates attended, addressing issues on ‘Sustainable Tourism in Trans-boundary Conservation Areas.’ Culture – Heritage – Nature - Contemporary Asia. These are the four pillars of Brunei’s tourism products. Their elements offer a unique blend of modern refinement, scenic allure, cultural reverence and majestic opulence for the discerning traveller. Vibrant, yet peaceful, both modern and timeless, Brunei is a fusion of majestic opulence and traditional respect. Today, the oil rich multi-cultural Islamic Sultanate of Negara Brunei Darussalam, so called officially, meaning ‘Abode of Peace,’ is primarily covered with a canopy of green and gold, extended into several thousand hectares of virgin rainforest, a far-reaching system of rivers, unspoiled coral reefs, mangrove covered islands, sweeping beaches and nature reserves. Bandar Seri Begawan is the centre of Brunei’s commerce, finance and government. In many ways, it is also the heart of Brunei’s cultural landscape, housing some of the nation’s most revered landmarks. The city’s breathtaking Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a stunning tribute to the nation’s deeprooted faith, while the truly Bruneian Kampong Ayer water village offers a glimpse of the nation’s quaint Asian charm.
10
www.siammap.com
Beneath Bandar Seri Begawan’s lavish adornments, gold towers, sparkling fountains and colourful mosaic tiles, lies a city steeped in quiet respect, grounded in Islamic tradition, and exuding a sense of peace that makes it one of Asia’s most distinctive capital cities. The government’s commitment towards responsible tourism has encompassed Brunei’s natural environment and cultural heritage, cultivating the term ‘Green Tourism’ - a much-needed concept in making an effort to slow down the calamitous consequences of the ever-present climatic change. In the embrace of two triangles of land, Brunei is divided into West and East. The west side hosts the country’s capital: Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), and is the international point of arrival, supporting the majority of the estimated total local population of 396,692 inhabitants, comprised of Malay (67%); Chinese (15%); indigenous tribes (6%) and other (12%). Here the visitor may enjoy plenty of soft tourism activities include river cruising, leisure along the sublime sandy beaches, eye feasting on waterfalls or easy hiking trails in the lush hills, and a visit to Kampong Ayer, the world’s largest and time-honoured stilted water villages. These lie on one side of the Sungai (river) Brunei, which is the source of the fragile mangrove ecosystem stretching into the Bay of Brunei. A rewarding excursion from BSB is a visit to the densely forested area of Wasai Kendall, enriched with liquid trails to the picturesque Air Terjun Tinggi and Air Tenjun Rendah waterfalls. It’s a delightful natural spa experience to dip into the mineral enriched water pools. Then, continue to Luagan Lalak Forest Reserve within the parameters of Labi Hills Nature Reserve, an abundant water swamp, which promotes growth to the native flora and fauna. You may even come across the feared Iban tribes, mainly in Sarawak (Malaysia) and the West Kalimantan region of Indonesia in the Borneo corridor. These descendants of the Dayak peoples of Borneo, also called the Sea Dayak, were Borneo’s warrior tribe, renowned of their past and infamous practise of Head-hunting. Eastward across BSB and Brunei Bay, Temburong is accessible by boat through thick mangrove forests to the end of the ride at Bangar village. Trekking in the area is an enriching experience with an insight into wildlife and the natural balanced systems of a virgin rainforest. The southernmost tip of Temburong is Bukit Pagon, at 1841 metres, and is the highest point in this green heart of
Bangar village, its entrance a well-marked trail leading to Bukit Patoi peak (330 metres) and thereon, crossing over to Bukit Perdayan peak (374 metres), uncovering caves and fascinating geological formations, which highlights a refreshing half-day trek. Exploring further south, the upper-layered rainforest bionetwork becomes more complex with extensive green canopies leading towards Ulu Temburong National Park, again only accessible on a longboat. For most visitors, river rafting on the Temburong River rates as the preferred activity in this untouched region of Borneo. With many natural, cultural and leisure activities available within easy reach in this small sized Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures, Brunei promises wholesome fun and excitement for families, honeymooners or those with interests such as nature, golf or diving. A clean and pollution free environment, the near absence of traffic jams, un-crowded streets and a healthy lifestyle, make Brunei a perfect getaway for short holidays or for a break from the hectic pace of urban living.
Some Tips for the World Traveller Bruneians are generally very tolerant and will understand that visitors are not familiar with all of their customs and Islamic traditions. Nonetheless, keeping these few things in mind will go far in showing the Bruneian people that you respect and appreciate their culture, enriching your experience: • Tourists should observe the local dress code and dress modestly. Clothing comfortable for hot weather is acceptable, except when visiting places of worship or for social and business functions. • Bruneians shake hands by lightly touching the hands and then bringing the hand to the chest. Some people do not to shake hands with members of the opposite sex. • You should not point with your finger; instead, use the thumb of your right hand with the four fingers folded beneath it. • When visiting a mosque, all visitors should remove their shoes. Women should cover their heads and not have their knees or arms exposed. You should not pass in front of a person in prayer or touch the Koran. • Gifts (particularly food) should only be passed with the right hand, although it is acceptable to use the left hand to support the right wrist. • It is polite to accept even just a little food and drink when offered. When refusing anything offered, it is polite to touch the plate lightly with the right hand. • During the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, Muslims do not take food from sunrise to sundown. It would be inconsiderate to eat or drink in their presence during this period. • In deference to the Muslim majority, alcohol is not sold in Brunei, but private consumption by non-Muslims is allowed. Non-Muslim tourists are allowed a generous duty-free allowance of 2 bottles of alcohol (wine, spirits, etc) and 12 cans of beer per entry, and may consume alcohol with sensible discretion in hotels and some restaurants.

Fish Fight Club
He lives a life of solitude.
by Glenn R. Wallis
There can be no outside distractions to avert his attention from the gruelling training that has become his life. Alone he focuses on his destiny, with only his Master and Trainer as his mentor and close companion. Born of greatness, from his moment of birth his fate has been decided. Emanating the life of a Gladiator, a Spartan, a Trojan or that of a Samurai, he is an enigmatic warrior of descended breed. No weapons but those that have been naturally bestowed upon him will guide him to victory. With a shroud of brilliant colours swirling about his body like a cloak, he perfects his Ninja-like movements that will decide the fate of his next battle. His Trainer bates his temper, spraying water into his face and driving him into such fury that he resembles a Berserker from the ancient battlefields of Greece; those who would tear off their garments and run into the heat of battle knocking down every enemy that stood in their way. As with a Muay-Thai boxer in the corner of the ring, the Trainer pushes his student to the mental limits. He flares his fins to their full extent, and stands dead still as the water flows through his frame. Poised, on the brink of rage, he prepares himself to attack. His enemy is only his reflection on the glass bowl that confines him... for the moment. He is the Siamese Fighting Fish. Siamese Fighting Fish, or Betta Splendens, of the Labyrinth fish family, have become a favourite in aquariums around the world, with their prolific colours and distinctive features amazing owners new and experienced. The Siamese Fighting Fish originated in Thailand, found living wild in small ponds or rice fields, and over time have spread into other countries in the region, throughout Malaysia and Indonesia. Within Thailand, this breed of fish has been raised in households since the Sukhothai Period, more than 700 years ago. Records from the reign of King Lithai of Sukhothai allude to fighting fish, even then, being reared for sport. Betta Splendens are indeed great fighters. In nature, the male species of this fish will compete in battle until one is able to escape, which often is impossible due to the size of their environment. Some of the fighters never come to understand the weight of defeat, but only know of death or victory. The Fighting Fish, if confined with another male, will fight to the death, but this is not what this sport has become about. It is about the art of breeding, the attention to detail of training, and the sport of victory through battle. There exist some misunderstanding regarding the legalities of Fish Fighting in Thailand, like Buffalo Fighting and Cock Fighting, specific restrictions apply to such events, however are in fact legal. A permanent Bettafighting house called a ‘Betta Betting House’ can be set up, as long as it adheres to bylaws. Licenses can be obtained through Municipality Offices, and limitations to operating days are set, such as no activity on Buddhist religious holidays or on working days, leaving only Saturday and Sunday for these activities. It is relevant to note that betting is illegal in these houses.
12
www.siammap.com
Raising these fish to become not only good fighters, but also victorious champions, is an art form that has been practiced for many centuries in Thailand. Styles of training and methods of preparing these fish for battle have been some of the best-kept secrets of Thai people who yearn to produce a winning strain of breed. There are two major factors that must be dominant within your breed to make your fish win. One is the strain of the fighter and the other is the core training methods utilised in practicing with your Fighting Fish. The Thai term for Fish Fighting is ‘Plakat’, and from this ancient tradition of Thailand comes great honour and esteem for a champion fish and it’s trainer. Decades of work have gone into cultivating the perfect fighter by many breeders and trainers, and countless hours of training dedicated to enhancing the natural fighting abilities of these born-to-fight Marines. Unlike the Buffalo or the Cock Fighter, one of the more interesting traits, or features of the Betta Splendens is that if one spawn triumphs over a fish from another spawn, the whole spawn of descendants from the winner’s spawn will prevail over the whole spawn of the loser. No exceptions! This genetic fact keeps trainers and breeders constantly developing new species for battle, reaching further and further to perfect the ultimate warrior.
The Fight Club Secret Society In Thailand, there is a society that prides itself as the masters of the Fish Fighting Ring. They have secret meeting to discuss tactics and breeding techniques, sessions to show training rituals and feeding formulas, and they greet each other with special names they have created to establish their pecking order or relationship within the society. Like all fighters, they have been given nicknames to indicate their status, or their infamy. Within these societies members often will never know the true names of the other members. There are some special names that will be given to players as they establish themselves within the society, a tag that reflects some character of the player. Most of these names represent a Thai or Chinese metaphor.
‘Tik the Eagle’; Tik is the nickname and ‘the Eagle’ represents the character of this player, indicating that he has very sharp eyes, is decisively fast yet quiet, and has the ability to attack in silence. ‘Noi Around the World’; means that Mr. Noi can play on any side of the game, his fighters have been trained to sneak attack and should be watched carefully. ‘Ting Yellow Water’; indicates that Mr. Ting is suspect of using steroids or other chemicals in his fighters. And then there is the ‘The Gang of Four’. This is the name of four notorious professionals who work as a team. The Gang of Four has become a legend in the realm of the Fighting Fish world. They play the game with the skill and ruthlessness of gorilla warfare, well planned, systematic and silent. Their fighters are coveted by many, and they will often walk away from a tournament with all of the rewards. Some Fishy Facts for the Amateur Depending on your individual Betta, your fish may enjoy being permitted to see another Betta or a mirror for short periods of time daily. This will encourage aggressive and territorial behaviours natural to Bettas, and will normally inspire them to patrol their tank, flare, bubble nest, etc. Just be cautious not to overdo this, as too much flaring can be stressful and harmful. Seeing other fish and other animals from the safety of their own territory is a good way to keep a Betta interested in the environment. If you have a big community tank, see if your Betta can be kept next to it without too much stress; the constantly changing movement will allow them to be visually stimulated without the stress of another Betta, or another fish in the tank that they feel they must actively patrol against. Bettas tend to enjoy interacting with their owners, and by simply spending some time up at the tank, perhaps having them follow your finger or something of the like, can keep them occupied for short spurts of time.
Fight Photos Courtesy of Rung Jirapol: www.clicksamuiphoto.com
Bettas are highly intelligent and can be trained to perform simple tricks in a matter of weeks. Activities like swimming through hoops and tunnels, pushing a small ball into a plastic net, and even taking food from one’s fingers are all wonderful ways to interact with Bettas in a way that is challenging and rewarding for them. www.siammap.com

“The history of the Optimist Sailor sings of youthful battles with the breeze! It starts with winds, slow moving sails, and it ends with the wisdom of the skies and wings.”

Islands always have a close relationship with sea. Thailand’s first settlers came by boat and so did the first tourists. The children of Thailand have continued with the ancient traditions of sailing, and today face the didactic lessons that Mother Nature and the powers of the Sea have to teach. The Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) in Pattaya, gathered fifty-five Optimist Sailors aged from 6 to 15, to take part in the Admiral’s Cup on the weekend of January 30th and 31st at their international sailing facility. Most were from the Junior Sailing Squadron of Thailand (JSST); however, the ambition of those further away would not allow these entries to see their skills go unchallenged. 7 entries travelled from the Isle of Koh Samui, 9 from the resident RVYC and 3 competitors from the waters of Korea presented themselves before the judges. From beginners to experts, the air was filled with the quest for good winds. The racing was demanding, huge wind shifts on both days tested the skills of the youngsters and the training their masters had provided, to tack at the right times and find the best course to round the buoys. Winds were light, but enough to complete 3 good races each day. With pride the observers looked on, watching the ruggedness of the sailors toughing out the rocking conditions, even as they ate their lunches upon their vessels.
Their boat-handling impressed the race officials, particularly their ability to hold the Opti’s still near the start line, moving gently backwards and forwards, defending their position, during the eternal 4 minutes before the starting signal. This led to on-time, on-the-line, great starts, a lesson thought by many that could be refined by some of the adults sailing at Varuna. This event was one of three weekends chosen as the qualifying rounds for the next Asian Games, which will be held in October 2010. Every Asian country sends one girl and one boy sailor. All Optimist sailors are also invited to the Sawadee Regatta on Koh Samui in September. The Results (First 6): 1. Noppakao Poonpat 2. Sarawut 3. Totsapon Mahawichien 4. Thacharin Narbonne 5. Don Whitcraft (best placed RVYC sailor) 6. Jirawat Jadklay Best-placed Korean sailor was Ju Hyeon Kim (10th place) Best-placed Samui sailor was Nattapol Panyawan (18th place) The Under 10 winner was Stephanie Bjørk (Koh Samui) Best-beginner was Nattakarn Panyawan: from Samui Runner-up beginner Alex Grigorer: from Samui. What you may not be aware of is the incredible and fierce competition that is involved with yachting in Thailand. The King himself set the prestige of this sport, as he is not only a formidable yachtsman, but also a custom designer of the vessels. Children both foreign and indigenous take pride in following in the King’s footsteps, and challenge themselves annually with gaining a place in the famous IODA World and Continental Championship Teams selected by the National Optimists Association on the basis of sailing competitions of the Optimist. One million plastic bags are used every minute of the day... And almost three million tons of plastic are used to bottle water globally every year.
Our planet’s waste management process remains to be one of the principal challenges that man faces, and is closely linked to the ongoing and unresolved predicaments of global warming due to the varying greenhouse gases produced through the decomposition and incineration of rubbish. It is estimated that 100 million tonnes of plastic alone are produced each year, and with landfills reaching capacity, much of man’s rubbish and waste is finding its way into the sea. This has led to the shocking discovery of an amalgamation of rubbish in the ocean, which is alleged to be twice the size of the continental United States, and is quite literally the world’s largest rubbish dump! This gyre of waste is estimated to be made of 90% plastic materials and has become nicknamed amongst scientists and environmental groups as ‘The Asian Trash Trail’, ‘The Eastern Garbage Patch’ and the ‘Trash Vortex’, stretching from the Californian coast through the northern Pacific, and extending its eddy into the waters of Japan.

“Pardon me thou bleeding piece of Earth, that I am meek and gentle with these butchers!” William Shakespeare
Around 10 million tonnes of the world’s annual plastic production finds its way into the sea each year, whereby it breaks down into ever-smaller particles as a result of wave action, sunlight and mechanical abrasion. These tiny particles then form a kind of plastic soup that is brought together as a result of the varying sea currents. According to a group of Dutch scientists, 70% of the ocean’s plastic sinks to the bottom and therefore the Trash Vortex is only one part of the bigger problem of ocean litter. They establish that there are around 110 pieces of litter per square kilometre in the North Sea, which is believed to amount to around 600,000 tonnes of waste. In addition, the UN Environment Programme estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of floating plastic, and in Japan, it is calculated that a massive 150,000 tons of plastic washes up on its shores each year. Apart from the obvious unsightliness of plastics and rubbish littering the world’s beaches, dive spots, and other areas of natural beauty, the damaging effect of rubbish and plastics spreads much deeper. Further findings from the UN Environment Programme revealed that a million seabirds, and around 100,000 sea mammals die each year as a result of plastic entanglement or ingestion. Contrary to the common misconception that plastic does not decompose, scientists have discovered this is not the case, and in the process of decomposition, it releases various harmful chemicals into the sea. Examples of some of these chemicals are Bisphenol A, which has been implicated in disrupting the hormonal system in animals, and Styrene Monomer, known to cause cancer. Figures released by the American Chemical Society, stated that samples of seawater collected from the Pacific Ocean were found to be contaminated with up to 150 parts per million of some of these components of plastic decomposition. In addition, plastics act as chemical sponges, and attract manmade chemicals such as pesticide DDT, which then enter the food chain, before potentially ending up on your dinner plate. With the trash gyre estimated to double in size over the next decade, the question remains... What can be done to resolve this problem? Public reaction and feelings on the Trash Vortex seem to vary from total disbelief, and in some extreme cases accusations of environmental “eco- warrior hype” have been cast, to more constructive input on reintroducing the glass bottle with recycling deposits fees enforced, using canvas grocery bags rather than plastic, and championing the age old motto’ Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.’ It should be recognised that recycling alone will not solve this problem simply because there is already too much plastic, and that the greatest efforts need to be applied to the latter solution of reduction, translating into an individual basis of consuming less. In regards to the plastics and recycling industries, it has also been pointed out that in theory this Trash Vortex offers a potential gold mine in unclaimed plastic resources. The issue however is complex due to the process of sorting and recycling. Responsibilities also lie with companies to use packaging that can be
18

easily recycled. It is the very complexity of sorting and processing plastic that is believed to be directly linked to the fact that plastic recycling rates in the US lag far behind those of other items such as newspapers (about 80%) and corrugated fibreboard (70%).
Progress is being made in some parts of the world, for example, in the UK plastic bottle recycling rates in 2007 amounted to 25% of all the plastic bottles in household waste, which was around 3,300 million bottles, in comparison to 2001 whereby just 3% were recycled. This has been attributed to better local authority recycling facilities and a greater awareness of the need for more responsible household waste practices. Though clearly a positive step, in the same year it was estimated that only 7% of the two million tonnes of plastic produced in the UK were actually recycled with the average UK family throwing away 1.5 tonnes of household waste per year - the equivalent of half an Asian Elephant! Currently in Thailand, there are no widespread formal recycling schemes despite the fact that the countries waste is increasing annually. There are also no incentives to discourage the over use of plastics, which amounts to around 20% of the country’s rubbish. Many visitors to Thailand will notice that it’s not uncommon to be offered a plastic bag for the smallest of items, such as a can of soda, which are almost always accompanied by a plastic straw, or the offer of plastic spoons wrapped in more plastic. collectors and pickers separate recyclable material from rubbish in dustbins, trashcans and from landfills. Together, they salvage approximately 22% of urban waste. The larger businesses can then sell some materials directly to the recycling factories; and a smaller quantity is used directly to make new products. There are many localized efforts in the works globally to tackle the issue of sea pollution. For example, in Dahab Egypt, where diving is a major part of its tourism industry, regular clean ups are organised and plastic bags have now been banned. They are also in the process of piloting a system whereby tourists are offered water re-fill station facilities to reduce the need for purchasing new plastic bottles.
Within Thailand, several dozen dive companies, Global Mala affiliates and concerned independent resorts and hotels, annually arrange clean-up days to aid in the beautification of the King’s beaches and the world’s oceans and reefs. However, the education of how to dispose and where to reduce consumption is proving to be a sluggish victory internally. Externally, tourism is the culprit. And without targeting people or insulting our fellow travellers, education on their part is necessary. Where it appears a novelty to receive a plastic bag for your meal, with a straw, spoon, fork, and plastic bottle within plastic wrapping, where your Pad Thai sits inside a Styrofoam container with another smaller bag of fish sauce and chillies with a plastic band holding together each plastic container, bag and packet of plastic cutlery, the outcome is preposterously alarming as far as plastic consumption is concerned. And although you might dispose of this waste in accordance to the litter control laws within this beautiful Land of Smiles, it is where it travels from the bin that becomes the problem. It is either burned or dumped, into the sea being the easiest shortcut. Therefore in our friendly way of asking you to help, only take what you need in regards to plastic. Greater efforts by governments and industries are crucial, but those efforts alone will not fix the problem - it is the individual choices we all make on a day to day basis that can make the greatest impact of all, and as individuals it’s important to remember we can all be a part of the solution. Visa Run to the Pearl of the Orient
48 hours in Penang Those living in Thailand without a full time Visa arrangement or visitors who want to stay for more than 40 days, have to leave the country to renew their Visas. There are organized Visa run tours on Koh Samui to Malaysia and via Ranong to Myanmar. (Formerly Burma). Most foreigners in Bangkok will go to Cambodian borders, get their stamp, turn around and return to Thailand on the same day. Travelling with my children, I was horrified to take a minibus and go on a Visa run in only one day. Most people have to leave home early, sometimes at 5:00 in the morning, then it will take about 4 hours to get to a border, an average of 2 hours will be spent there and then it will take another 4 hours back home. Most of the times the chauffeur drives like crazy to save time, it’s really dangerous (I have heard about horrible car accidents!) and it’s very unpleasant. Just imagine a long queue in front of you on a very hot sunny day without any shelter. In my case, I had to visit a Thai Embassy or Consulate, and my lawyer recommended flying to Malaysia. Flying to Penang with Air Asia (1500 Baht if you book early) is the most practical opportunity. The Thai consulate here opens from 8am to 2pm Monday to Saturday, located at No. 1, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. As I’ve heard that Penang’s immigration officials can be notoriously sticky, we secured the services of a local ‘agent’ who prepared all the necessary documentation. I was more than satisfied. I didn’t even need to show up personally! Our ‘guide’ Anil took care of everything, and finally this process seems to work much smoother than if you go there as a Farang, who might have to face vague excuses to rejected documents. As the processing takes two days I decided to combine business with pleasure, soaking up the distinctive Chinese character of the island, exploring its hill stations, checking out the ancient naval placements and colonial suburbs with my kids. Finally, our Visa run to Malaysia turned out to be a pleasant 48-hour family adventure and a well-rounded experience. There is a strong interlink between the country’s multiracial and multicultural make-up and its history. Besides the local Malays and the native groups, immigrants from China, India, Indonesia and other parts of the world have all contributed to the multiracial composition of

its population. It’s interesting cultural diversity can be largely attributed to the country’s long and on-going interaction with the outside world and colonial rule by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Consequently, the evolution of the country into a cultural melting pot is evident in the unique blend of religions, socio-cultural activities and traditions, dressing, languages and food.
History & Culture
Penang received its name from the Pinang or Betel nut Tree once commonly found on the island. History began in 1786, when Captain Francis Light established it as the first British trading post in the Far East. He acquired Pulau Pinang (Penang Island) from the Sultan Abdullah of Kedah on behalf of the East India Company, which in return promised Kedah protection against its powerful neighbours, the Siamese. Most people don’t know that until this day Penang pays an annual lease! In order to keep possession of the island and to appease the often-irate Sultan, Francis Light, in 1791, agreed to
pay him 6,000 Spanish dollars per year. Today, over two centuries later, the Penang State Government is still paying a yearly token of Malaysian $10,000 to the Sultan of Kedah, in fulfilment of Light’s original promise. Palau Penang was virtually uninhabited when Francis Light had landed. Most areas of the state were covered under dense vegetation and the place was then no more than a swampy, malaria-infested area. Light took up the task of cleaning up the jungle for better navigation of his troupes and named the island Prince of Wales Island due to the fact that the acquisition date fell on the prince’s birthday. He soon established Georgetown, and quickly this ‘Pearl of the Orient’ became an important duty-free port of call for traders from as far away as Europe and the Middle East. From an uninhabited island, the population grew to 10,000 by the end of the century and Penang became the most important trading post for tea, spices (clove and nutmeg from local plantations) by means of China, pepper from Aceh and textiles from India. Later on, the regional trade grew to include tin, and then rubber. Penang remained under the British Colonial rule until 1957, when it gained independence under the Federation of Malaya. In 1963, it became part of Malaysia. Georgetown, Penang’s capital, is a city steeped in history and tradition, yet sparkling with modern development. Most sights are easily seen on foot, or by hiring a trishaw. Certain sections of Penang present a quaint picture from the past where narrow side streets, trishaws, temples and traders plying their goods, seem to belong to a forgotten era. Just a few steps further shopaholics will find clothing, souvenirs, antiques and the latest electronic gadgets in modern department stores.

Chinese carved-wood panels with English floor tiles and Scottish iron-works. There are also displays of ornate style of dress and accessories, lovely old porcelain pieces, furniture and works of art brought in from China and some European countries that were specially commissioned by the Baba and Nyonya families, and handed down through the generations. To this day, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion is used by movie directors as film sets where many famous Asian and Chinese films have been produced.

Eastern & Oriental Hotel (5 stars) Already renowned in Southeast Asia for their enterprise and business acumen, the Armenian Sarkies brothers, Martin and Tigran, settled down in Penang and established the Eastern Hotel in 1884. Encouraged by its success, they opened another hotel, the Oriental in 1885, on an adjacent piece of land facing the sea. Combined, these two hotels became the largest hotel in Penang. Today, more than a century since its establishment, this Grande Dame of historical and colonial charm still offers its guests the finest traditions of luxury and service. Penang War Museum You can also see history come alive at the War Museum, which is constructed around the remnants of an old British fort built into a hill, spanning over some 20 acres of land. Penang’s largest preserved fortress is located in the southeastern part of Penang, and here you will relive an exciting adventure of battle, history and events in Malaysia from during World War II. Learn about the life of a typical British soldier and his Asian counterpart, see several installations above and below ground where old war relics including pillboxes, canons, armaments and uniforms are stored. There is also an interactive firing range where visitors can try their hand at target practice using paintball guns. Jubilee Clock Tower Another example of the islands’ rich heritage is the Moorish-style clock tower, standing sixty feet tall, one foot for each year of Queen Victoria’s reign. During World War II, bombs dropped on King Edward Place caused the clock tower to tilt slightly. Kek Lok Si Temple This temple is reputed to be the most beautiful and the largest Buddhist Temple complex in South East Asia. Its seven-storey pagoda standing at 30 metres tall is a mixture of Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture and artisanship. Construction of the temple started in 1893, but it was only in 1930 that the Pagoda of Rama VI, named after the Thai king who laid the foundation stone, but better known as the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddha’s, was completed. In 2002, a 30.2m bronze statue of the Kuan Yin, Goddess of Mercy, was completed and opened to the public. The current focus is to create an ornate shelter for the statue. 16 carved dragon pillars are currently being built and the concentric roof will be inspired by classical Ming architecture. The temple is a focal point of festivals of the Chinese community in Penang. The Chinese New Year celebrations are particularly impressive. For 30 days following Chinese New Year, people celebrate in the park surrounded by the Chinese signs of the Zodiac, and the temple remains open until late at night while thousands of lights turn the scenery into a sea of light. Snake Temple This temple, 14km on the Bayan Lepas road to the airport, was built in 1850 to the memory of a Buddhist priest, who was believed to have possessed incredible

Penang Hill At 830metres above sea level, Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) provides a panoramic view of the island from its peak and is an enchanting place to visit. It has one of Asia’s first Swiss-built funicular railway systems and the small cable pulled cars have made the journey up and down since 1923. There are walking trails and a private road that lead up the hill as well. China Town This old part of Penang, in the heart of Georgetown, bustles with frenetic activity especially during festivals and celebrations like the upcoming like Chinese New Year. There are several shops conducting traditional businesses, and this area also contains several Chinese and Hindu temples and mosques. It is good fun to wander around and take a trishaw ride.

Adrenal
Burn-Out
Just Another Reason to take a Long and Well-Deserved Holiday. Adrenal What? Adrenal fatigue, adrenal exhaustion, adrenal burnout‌is this where your stress overload is taking you? The adrenal glands, which sit just above the kidneys, are hormone producers. As well as secreting hormones like estrogens and testosterone, they are also the production house for the stress response hormones, adrenalin and cortisol. Under normal stress conditions, the adrenal glands in a healthy individual are able to adequately regulate hormone secretions. However, with severe or prolonged stress, the adrenals can take a beating. Essentially, what happens is that the adrenal glands go into overdrive, trying to keep up with the body’s need for adrenalin. Eventually, this wears the adrenals down and they become underactive. It may begin with mild symptoms of adrenal fatigue, but over time can lead to severely debilitating adrenal burnout.
22
www.siammap.com
Excessive stress is the main cause. Working too much, sleeping too little, the constant demands of a fast-paced, high-stress lifestyle, and even stressful life events can compromise the adrenals. Although it can affect anybody, those most at risk are Type A personalities who are seen as highly productive and highly successful; the sort of people who burn the midnight oil, never switch off their iPhone or Blackberry, answer emails on Sundays, and cram their day with an endless list of ‘to do’s’. Pushing limits is natural for Type A personalities, and they often find it difficult to slow down and stop ‘doing’. People with adrenal imbalance often reach for stimulants like caffeine and sugar to ‘keep them going’. Excessive use of stimulants can further damage the adrenals, so this kind of temporary energy boost only aggravates the problem. Adrenal burnout is not something that can be fixed with a few good nights sleep. It is a deep imbalance of the body’s energy-producing system, and rest alone is not enough to restore balance. Adrenal burnout is a syndrome rather than a disease. It is a combination of different symptoms that can vary from person to person. Some of these symptoms include: * Constant fatigue that is not relieved by rest. * Insomnia * Low blood pressure and/or blood sugar levels * Back and joint pain * Decreased immunity - susceptibility to colds, flus, infections * Emotional symptoms such as apathy, despair, anxiety and irritability * Excessive behaviour such as working at a furious pace, intense exercise, loud music (your body’s attempt to stimulate adrenals) * Other glandular imbalances, such as hypothyroidism and lowered immunity, can be secondary
Recovery For complete recovery, you need to consider both the physical and emotional aspects. Adrenal burnout is a lifestyle illness fuelled by cultural values and a personal psychological disposition; a lifestyle approach is needed to deal with it. Diet is very important, as the body’s nutritional needs increase under stress. Things like excessive carbs and stimulants and insufficient protein can further stress the adrenals. Nutritional supplements may be required, and holistic healing therapies can help to restore both your physical and emotional condition. It is also important to addre motional and psychological issues and stressors. It has been said that if you want something different, you need to do things differently. In the case of adrenal imbalance, this is not only true for your recovery but also for your ongoing health. Stress is a major cause of disease and premature ageing in our modern, fast-paced world, so treating the symptoms, supporting the body’s systems, and learning stress management techniques makes good health sense. Kamalaya Koh Samui’s deeply restorative Balance & Revitalise programs deal holistically with the symptoms and underlying causes of adrenal burnout and address stress prevention from a mind, body and spirit perspective. gray matter
What’s
the Matter Gray? Dear Diary, The monkey did not drop the charges. That’s what the tourist policeman told me, you remember the one…the guy who said he wouldn’t be surprised if the monkey didn’t drop the assault charges. Yup, that guy! Anyhow, now, not only do I have a restraining order against me, but I have to also perform community service on the island of Koh Samui.
Now this seemed like a pretty good idea for me here. I had noticed that the motorcycle lanes were getting a little worn down as far as the road lines went, and they were awfully dirty as well, maybe I would have to paint them, or sweep them? Yes! Sweep them all off around the island. Now that sounds like the perfect fit for community service.
Now I’ve heard of a lot of trumped up things in my time, but this one beats them all… community service?!
I was gravely mistaken!!!
I don’t even speak their language, although I really wish I did because there was this guy in jail, (you remember I had to spend a few days in there while they decided if the monkey I had apparently assaulted, was going to press charges against me) and he kept whispering ‘nee pai’ to me, or something like that. He was a nervous little guy, kept pacing back and forth and talking to himself, he was making me nervous. Like I wasn’t freaked out enough as it was already. This bristly little man was however trying to give me a very good piece of advice. ‘nee pai’ means ‘run away’! If only I had taken those Thai lessons back home like I had planned, I might be down the road somewhere safe, or lazing on a beach where I should be. Turns out the monkey had to get some type of psychiatric treatment due to the assault on him by a human, and now he’s saying that he’s so traumatized that he may never be able to work again, and he is searching for a lawyer to represent him in gaining some sort of compensation. So, as I mentioned, they put a restraining order on me. I am not allowed to go within 500 feet of the monkey. Now generally I don’t have problems with the lawmakers of countries, especially if I am a visitor in one, but…HOW IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO TELL WHICH MONKEY IS WHICH??? I really wouldn’t know this monkey if I saw him again! All I remember is he had large fangs, lots of spiky hair, and absolutely the worst breath I have ever smelled in my life. I kept all of this to myself of course while being sentenced. I was already knee deep in trouble. I didn’t make a big deal out of it; I politely smiled and bowed, trying to show the court that I was humbled by their judgment. I thought that this was the end of things, that it was a misunderstanding after all, and that’s when they hit me with the service thing! Over the next 30 days I have been ordered by the courts to assist in the rebeautification of the island. Ah…yes you ask…what does this mean exactly? I asked myself the same question. Initially I thought of the pranksters back home who had been in similar predicaments with the law. Like my friend Martha who was busted spray painting graffiti on a wall, and was made to serve 100 hours of community service painting lines on the roadways for bicycle lanes.

I have been following the elephants, twice daily, as they make their journey from their resting area to their working place, and visa-versa. Two times a day I follow these beautiful giant creatures, on foot, with a big canvas sack and a bamboo shovel. They really are magnificent creatures from the side profile, and even from the front where their trunk and tusks display a powerful, yet gentle creature. But my view is one that is much less poetic. The tools that I have been given are as crude and rudimentary for the purpose that they must serve, as the service to which I am incarcerated. When the court first passed my sentence onto me, I was a little confused, even enlightened that I would have the opportunity to spend some time with these creatures that I had a deep fondness for. My vision of the elephant and its majestic personage were quickly about to change. I have been instructed to pick up after the elephants. Pick up what you ask? I pick up after the elephants as they journey down the ring road, and casually leave behind their dung for me to fight with. Struggle with is a better term! It’s heavy, it’s wet, it’s disgusting, and it’s humiliating as tourists stop and take pictures of me in my orange outfit, supplied by the government of Samui to wear as I complete my service. They don’t even take as many pictures of the elephants as they do of me. Video cameras and flashes from hundreds of cameras light up the roadside as I grunt and groan with my service. I am the poop collector! I don’t know what to say… Let me tell you one thing though, if I ever do see that monkey again, not only am I going to break my restraining order, but I’m going to make certain that he will need a therapist for the rest of his life! I have got to get out of here…I’m contemplating escape!

Putting Michael’s Private Collection on the Shelf The Oriental Gallery Expansion “I sell furniture, art and accessories for a living. The only trouble is, it’s my own.” PIECES OF THE ORIENT When people come to Koh Samui on holidays, the last thing that they want to do is have to carry home some enormous piece of furniture, or a delicate keepsake that they just couldn’t say no to buying. With the close proximity to regions where these items are made however, it’s understandable why some people shop incessantly while on vacation. For those who fear the price tag or for those who know that the purchase will be nothing but cumbersome, I have the solution to this dilemma. At Oriental Living I have expanded the furniture showroom with a new Gallery space in the back to contain an array of pieces that I collected over the years, with many more catalogued that are easily accessible, for a plethora of budgets. We have moved far beyond providing attractive furnishings and design ideas, to include an exclusive and original Asian art collection consisting of paintings, sculptures, lacquer ware and carvings you simply will not find anywhere else. These breathtaking creations are the works of celebrated Asian artists, ranging from abstract oil paintings through to Burmese Stupas, Betelnut boxes and Buddha statues. Each piece personifies the creative spirit that drives modern Asian culture, merging past and present to guarantee the perfect finishing touch.
share it with the world, so I built a showroom and put them on my shelves. Today, with 20 years experience, our reputation for quality, style and design savvy has visitors and resort owners on the island coming into our showroom, and now the Gallery space, to see what I have new on our shelves. I love every piece I’ve collected for the Gallery, and I’m sure you will too! Our interior design projects clearly demonstrate a personalised approach to creating the ultimate living spaces. Whether working with private villa owners, developers, large hotels, and even for the foreigner who wants some ideas to take back home, our design team listens and guides clients toward sensitive, complementary choices that go far beyond their expectations. The client sets the tone, and then we at Oriental Living deliver a delightful, bespoke finished product. As sole distributors of the BOX Furniture and TIPOTA collection in Thailand, Oriental Living provides private and commercial customers with unique pieces of exquisite furniture and art sourced from across the South East Asia region.
Now here’s where I solve the predicament of how to get what you want home for you. Not only do we have such a range of pieces that will satisfy even the most articulate connoisseur, but we have the ability to ship not only your furniture selection directly to your home, but almost anything that you purchase here as well.
Drop in to our expansive showroom in Mae Nam where we showcase some of the best furniture, art and accessories in our vast collection. I am also available to discuss interior design concepts and help you to create custom made pieces. Rotary
A Brief Talk with the President Claudio Cerquetti Claudio, what is the Rotary Club? Rotary International is a worldwide organisation with more than 100 years of history, 1,200,000 members shared in 32,000 clubs located in 200 countries and a number of successfully achieved worldwide projects. In the field, Rotary is represented by groups of volunteers, who have decided to donate time and economical resources in carrying on actions to provide help, either in a local reality, or on a wider global level. An uncounted number of charity projects under the motto “Service above Self” are currently taking place all over the world. The Rotary Club of Koh Samui (ROCKS) has, since 2003, been carrying out service projects on the Island: Blood donation database, supplying devices for the public hospitals, (our famous Respirator Project), Temple school improvements and Children’s days, are just few of the most recent projects undertaken. I am extremely glad to be part of such an organisation and to be President of our Rotary Club of Koh Samui, which is for me a great honour.
What is the Respirator Project? This year, ROCKS and its active friends have donated the second Respirator unit to the local Nathon Hospital and two Oxymeter devices. The only breather device the hospital could rely on before our action, was (and still is) in use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by a 5 years old young boy paralyzed from the neck since he born. With only one Respirator machine, continuously busy, in the case where any other patient had an immediate need for a respiratory deficit, they may risk dying of suffocation, since the main unit cannot be disconnected from the young boy. A second unit serves a multitude of purposes.
Who are the members of ROCKS? Most of our associates and friends here on Samui, are Expats who are currently living in Thailand, working, or spending their well-earned retirement time on this tropical island. What makes it extraordinary to be a member of a Rotary Club, is the satisfaction to see good things happen as we donate a small part of our time to help the community in which we all live, either in ordinary times or in emergencies. Exclusivity of being a member of the Rotary Club does not come by any special chance: everyone who shares the same view with ROCKS can be invited to be part of our club, and according to her or his time availability, to bring his effective support in any way she or he is able to.

Tell us about the first 6 months of your Presidency. As Samui residents, we live far away from large-scale conflicts of any nature, as well as health emergencies of any entity. Koh Samui is a special place for us, as the world in general keeps on moving on a weird track, living on a small island located in the Southern China Sea is considered a privilege. Helping to take care of this land, as well as of its residents, is in my opinion not just moral and common sense, but simply the right thing to do. All of us should be giving back to the community where we live, and provide the help we can for the less fortunate. Unfortunately, there is not great help from the local people’s community with what we do. Also, for reasons hard to comprehend, some people who are able, do not seem to be interested in helping their own nationals. Nevertheless, this is not a reason for ROCKS to stop helping. We are all Expats who have travelled thousands of kilometres to build a new life far away from our home countries, often starting from zero. So, challenges for us are part of the life we choose to live. For the projects that I have been involved in for 2009 to date, we have raised over 1,058,000THB. We meet twice a month at the splendid Renaissance Resort, in Lamai. Everyone is welcome to our meetings. Just check our website www. rotarysamui.org, and send us an email in case of interest.

Bar Ice Samui
Not just about ICE During the month of April, one of the UK’s most exciting hypnotists is about to return to the island of Samui for a magical, spell-binding season of shows. Previously astounding audiences at Bar Ice in January and February 2010, and due to the phenomenal demand for a repeat performance, the show will return to Bar Ice again starting on April 1st 2010. “It’s about making everyone who comes to Samui have a good time and a good giggle. This is the first and currently, the only show of its kind out here. We are normally very popular in European destinations, so this is a whole new ball game for me and for the island of Samui.” Kev Bee has been an entertainer since he was 11 years old and is now the presenter of one of the best hypnotist shows in the UK, having toured Spain and Corfu over the last 4 years and filling venues worldwide. “I want people to come out and see the show, be entertained, forget about work and all the other pressures of life, and have a ‘laugh out loud’ night. Its escapism in its purest form, for both audience members watching and the people who volunteer to come on stage. The beauty of the show is that it could be one of your friends or family, who become the star of the show. That’s why I love doing it, even I don’t know what will happen when I walk on stage, and it’s a different laugh every night.” Kev Bee always has all his on stage guest’s dignity and safety in mind. “When you do what I do, you need to show the greatest respect to your audience and especially to the people onstage. I won’t make
anyone strip off and I won’t make anyone reveal personal secrets. We need to show people that the days of an evil, cackling hypnotist are well gone, and that a true hypnotist will not do anything to endanger people’s dignity. I have families coming to see my shows, young children etc., I never offended anyone, and I’m not going to start now! It’s a good clean family night out.” “It’s a free show, which is quite rare with this sort of cabaret act, so the fact you can come and sit, enjoy the show and the beautiful surroundings at Bar Ice is reason enough to come along. It’s a must see, must do evening.” Bar Ice Samui is owned by several British and Thai entrepreneurs who reside on Koh Samui, Dubai and in the UK, and was a collaboration that is making its mark on the sunny isle of Samui. “Many months were spent searching for the right location and even longer to find suppliers, products and materials suitable for this project. What you see today is the result of a truly international effort. Crucial elements were sourced from several countries, including Canada, the UK, UAE, China, Germany, Italy and of course Thailand. The dream was to create, and be able to maintain the world’s best ice bar.” Bar Ice Samui, displays a full size elephant gracing one end of the bar and a Tuk Tuk merged into another wall as a photo opportunity for visitors. The bar and shelving incorporates bamboo and orchids, frozen into the ice, and provides a distinct island atmosphere, while the coloured ice and snow portrait

of the King and Queen, adds to the finishing touches. The ice itself was imported from Canada, taking a 5 week trip around the globe to reach its final destination, brought in from such a great distance because of the clarity of the ice. “This kind of ice can’t be reproduced anywhere in Asia.” Although the concept of an ice bar is not new, it is the only ice bar located on a tropical island. However, as management is keen to stress, Bar Ice Samui is not just about ice. It has three unique areas where customers can enjoy either a freezing, chilly or a warm atmosphere while collectively experiencing the coolest vibes on Samui. Management is keen to promote Bar Ice Samui as a truly unique experience and not just another bar. “First and foremost, we want people to have fun and enjoy themselves. Drinking from ice glasses is something that most people haven’t done, and as for the Thais, just to experience below zero temperatures is probably a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity.” Come in and experience the magic of Bar Ice, create your own flavoured vodka, drink from pure ice glasswear, put on a fur coat and marvel at the spectacular ice-sculptures. If you are a Samuian or an Expat Resident, ask about their special promotions when displaying your work permits or resident cards. If you want to win a Fight...
You have to SWING
by Glenn R. Wallis
T
here are some things that you just don’t want to talk about, some deep and dark secrets that are best not mentioned, and there are even some avenues of life and reality that while you are on vacation, you justifiably don’t want to see. However, they surround us.
As in every other country around the planet, there are girlie-bars and sex-workers. What is undoubtedly the oldest profession in the world continues into the 21st Century due to the simple fact that there is a demand for it. Regardless of your opinions on the issue, the important factor is that our global views on the dangers affiliated with it, have been awakened. It’s an uncomfortable thing to know that underneath all of the beauty that Koh Samui has to offer, that there is an underworld of decadent pleasures that human nature has created. But that is not what this group of people have gathered together to fight. Just as in many other parts of the world, the Sex Industry is an enormous and profitable business, and where you point the finger to halt the destruction it causes, or who you blame as the centre of the problem, does not really matter. What matters ultimately, are all of the people involved. This is the direction that the SWING Foundation is aimed towards. SWING – Service Workers In-Group
40
in Bangkok in 2004. The group’s activities began at its grass roots to include actively promoting prevention and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among male sex workers. Volunteering participants in the project are using daily ‘sexual health diaries’ to keep track of sexual risk behaviours and possible STI symptoms, as well as visits to STI clinics. Peer outreach workers review the diaries with participants, and use the information to encourage the sex workers to protect themselves against HIV and other STIs, as well as to utilise voluntary testing and counselling services. Although the Service Worker In Group was formed to address the twin problems of rising HIV infection rates among male and transgendered sex workers and other men who have sex with men, it has grown into a community networking foundation to include all of the sexes. With USAID funding and support from Family Health International’s Asia-Pacific Regional Office, SWING began implementing comprehensive services for HIV prevention, care, support, and treatment for these groups. An additional and more global aim of the foundation was to slow the move of the HIV epidemic into the general population.
“HIV among sex workers and access to services are among the biggest challenges to the AIDS response in Thailand. It is extremely important that sex workers gain access to HIV prevention and treatment services without fear of discrimination.” Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS
One of SWING’s most important interventions in support of their clients’ health was distribution of condoms and water-based lubricants. (Oil-based lubricants weaken latex and cause condoms to tear.) SWING has shared this successful experience with other Thai community-based organisations and the project has become a reference in Thailand. It was adopted as a model by the Global Fund for another project that supports interventions in 14 provinces.
Khun Surang Janyam, Director of SWING, has led educational programs concerning sex workers for more than 20 years and launched SWING into action
“Access to commodities and information is one of the key ways we help address the HIV epidemic in Thailand.”
www.siammap.com
In October of 2009, SWING made its way to the tranquil tourist mecca of Koh Samui, and immediately was accepted by the community as a whole. SWING works with a lot of bars and bar owners directly. “Gaining the confidence of the bar owners is an important entry point for gaining access to the sex workers themselves,” indicates Khun Surang. “Knowledge about HIV is worryingly low among sex workers in Thailand, at around 28% and it is important that they receive education about how to protect themselves and their clients.” “There are approximately 1,000 sex workers on Samui that we have encountered, with the majority of these being based in Chaweng. Our program is not designed to give answers to these people on how to get out of the industry, or how to change their lives. We focus on their basic human rights and needs. We educate them, teach them that they have the same rights to health care and medical attention, and how to protect themselves. We allow them to create a community network to help each other, a second family so to speak.” Most of the sex workers on Samui are, and this might come as a surprise, single mothers, uneducated and alone. Their children are left back home with their families, and the money that they get helps to support them. “It’s ok that I go hungry for 2 or 3 days... but it is not ok for my child to have to bear this burden.” To date there are 90 people registered with the SWING Foundation on Samui, focused on the female sex worker solely. However the cry for help is being heard from the male workers as well, and Khun Surang feels that an additional section needs to be opened to help these people directly. Many of these workers live alone here on Samui, have no immediate families, no friends, and live in atrocious conditions to save money for those they have left behind. “These are smart people...without opportunity.” Working late nights, Khun Surang and her team train volunteer coaches, most often who have been involved in the sex trade themselves, to act as mentors and guides for these young people. They talk to bar owners, and to the girls and boys involved in the industry. They arrange family days to open channels for discussion, and they sit silently listening when no one else will give the time. Equally important, is that they make a weekly run to the Government Hospital in Nathon, giving these people free transportation to the other end of the island, where they otherwise may not travel to due to the cost and distance. SWING is sponsored through The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, created to dramatically increase resources to fight these three of the world’s most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities represents a new approach to international health financing. The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organisations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases. Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has become the main source of finance for programs with approved funding of US$ 18.7 billion for more than 572 programs in 140 countries. It provides a quarter of all international financing for AIDS globally, two-thirds for Tuberculosis and three quarters for Malaria. Global Fund financing is enabling countries to strengthen health systems by, for example, making improvements to infrastructure and providing training to those who deliver services. The Global Fund remains committed to working in partnership to scale up the fight against the diseases and to realize its vision – a world free of the burden of AIDS, TB and Malaria. Khun Surang Janyam was recently honoured as a human rights defender by Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission, and although the fight has not yet been won, there is hope on the horizon.

After dark
More than Merely Players Shakespeare said it best when he professed “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts ...” However, when it comes to perfecting the art of showmanship, there cannot be any other skilled player than one who is able to successfully combine the elements of the burlesque, the comedy, and the tragedy with the wit of the satirical parody, into a variety of musical interludes, appealing to a vast age group and musical fondness, than those of the Cabaret. For decades, the art of the Cabaret has been the centre of attention when it comes to enjoying an evening of entertainment in Thailand. And although the elements of Traditional Thai dancing are only a portion of the performances that you might see at a Cabaret show, the elegance and flare of the diverse styles you witness are nothing less than brilliant. Combining the ancient with the newest Pop-Star fads, the performances that you will see on a nightly basis are a sundry of flavours. There has been a stigma attached to this style of performance, one that forever will be difficult to shake. The reason is simply one of fear. If you are a fan of the Thai Cabaret, then you will be very aware that the players are in fact all men (or they used to be men), and just as upon the Shakespearean stage of his own era, there are no women to play the female roles. The players of the Cabaret are an eclectic combination of Katoeys, Ladyboys, Female Impersonators, Transgendered Shemales and men. So as you can imagine there is a wide mixture of feelings towards engaging in viewing these events. This is where you just might find yourself mistaken to judge the book by its cover. Overall, the shows are absolutely amazing, and the time, effort and professionalism that go into the creation of these shows is nothing less than you might pay an exorbitant amount of money to see from ‘authentic’ female performers in the venues of Las Vegas. The women of the Cabaret are beautifully costumed, the routines dynamically choreographed and the performers
42
www.siammap.com
themselves are magnificently entrancing within their visual manifestations. Some men and women may even consider them ‘Drop-dead gorgeous!’ Contrasting with these spell-binding Far Eastern enigmas, are musical extravaganzas reminiscent of the Broadway show, followed by legendary routines of the late and great singers of all times. And for the ‘knock me dead’ finale, it’s all hands on stage. The entire cast of showgirls, silk-gowned Divas and glittering Fred Astaire’s stomp, strut, wink and pout for a fitting send off that firmly seals the adulation of the audiences. The energy and gusto of these enticing, polished performances confirm it... Ladyboys love a stage. Women will beam throughout with sisterly pride, children will laugh uncontrollably and men will leave dribbling and asking themselves a few deep and meaningful questions. Located on the busy Chaweng Beach area of Koh Samui, the original StarClub Cabaret truly is “The Ultimate Entertainment Experience.” Featuring 3 different 45 minute shows each night that begin at 9.15pm, 10.15pm and 11.15pm, you have the opportunity to come for one, or stay to enjoy all of the shows every night. Jeff Gale, the Company Director shares his vision for StarClub, as well as the ins and out of what it takes to put together such a venue, and where his charismatic team have come from. “We try to maintain a show team of 16, but this varies from time to time as performers do have a tendency to come and go. Tob, the Show Manager and Major Lead Performer, has the job of maintaining the team and ensuring we always have a good group of ‘want to be’ performers waiting in the wings to take up a job with us when one becomes available. As far as finding performers, we draw from a number of areas. When looking for a Lead Performer we have contacts at the big shows in Bangkok and Pattaya like Calypso, Tiffany’s and Alcazar, and we try to find someone who wants to change to a smaller show where they can have more creative influence. All the other dancers are simply sourced through ‘family friends’. We do have a policy that anyone can come
for ‘training’, and if they can show that they have potential the more experienced team members take them under their wing. It usually takes only a couple of weeks before they can start in the chorus lines of the bigger numbers we perform. As to specific formal dance training, most simply don’t have it, but all have dreamed of a life as a performer and have been independently training from a very early age by mimicking what they see on television and the Internet. The Cabaret performer can come from a variety of places. Many have left the family farm, as they know a simple rural lifestyle is not going to satisfy their dreams. At the moment, we have a number of performers who have followed the family’s wish to get an education and a university degree, but have opted to follow their dream to perform as a Cabaret Artist.” StarClub blends Traditional Cabaret and modern ‘Pop Concert’ concepts, presenting songs from the famous ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Lido’ Cabarets in Paris, as well as delivering convincing impersonations of Madonna, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Cher, Shirley Bassey, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer and many more. The professionally rehearsed programs, glamorous costumes, make-up, quality lighting, and production techniques will leave you both amazed and excited with the experience StarClub Cabaret has to offer. “Starclub has brought to the basic structure of Thai Cabaret a heightened importance to production values. Most other Cabarets in Thailand tend to just string a number of songs together with no real understanding of the beginning, middle and end of the performance. Our approach has a better underlying ‘story’ in each program that creates a stronger and more entertaining result for our customers.” It’s time for you to come and see for yourself. As they say in Thailand “Never try...Never Know.” You might just love it! StarClub Cabaret Chaweng Beach Road Reservations: 08 3521 8720 Email: info@starclubsamui.com www.starclubsamui.com

The Cross-Community Environmental Awareness Project Successfully building links between communities and raising environmental awareness. By Phil Halson
On February 3rd, MakingTeams.com’s community environmental project took place at Oonrak Primary School. The project was designed by MakingTeams.com to allow all participants, regardless of age or background, to work together in a series of ‘hands-on’ challenges which promote the 3R (Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle) concept. The event involved guests from Unicity in Germany, children and teachers from Oonrak, Thepparat and Wat Sawangarom schools, and staff from Fair House Villas and Spa, The Imperial Samui, Miskawaan Luxury Beachfront Villas, Paradise Beach Resort, and Rocky’s Boutique Resort. John Ens, Chairman of The Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter, East Coast) Green Committee, gave a presentation to adult participants about the Low Carbon School Project, Bio-fertilisers and many other topics related to Samui’s environment. While at the same time, Marion Seipe from Divers in Paradise gave a presentation to all the children on sea-life, and what we can do to keep our oceans clean. Marion presented in both English and Some happy participants at MakingTeams.com’s community environmental project. Photo: Lee Cannon
German, and Khun Nuanchawee of Oonrak School translated the talk into Thai. After the presentations, musician Zach Sukuweh impressed everybody, first with his performance on didgeridoo, then by leading a sing-a-long of an improvised song “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.” This was accompanied by drumming on plastic bottles! There were also static displays of goods made from recycled materials made by children at local schools and staff at local hotels, and some innovative technologies that made use of recycled materials and renewable energies, for example a solar stove made from a discarded umbrella and aluminium foil, and a solar water heater made from pipes and old plastic bottles.
Another static display was hosted by Samui Robot Gallery, showing some of the metal creations they had made. There was an environmental quiz (which involved a bit of running around too!) and the day ended with a timed challenge - to make something useful and something educational using recycled materials. All teams managed to do so successfully, and all educational material was given to Oonrak School to use and display. The event proved to be both educational and fun, as hopefully future events will be too! JointheTouristPolice Volunteer Team
The tourist police on Samui are achieving a wonderful job in serving and protecting the tourist community arriving on this island of luxury and bountiful pleasures. Behind the scenes, and sometimes on the scene, Major Toni and the team are constantly aware and taking good care of the tourists in need. It was almost 6 years ago, that the Tourist Police Volunteer Team was established to help the local Thai officers in their work. “We are volunteers, and our job is to assist in any way the Local Thai officers headed by Major Toni, and do all that is needed in order to help the Tourist and Community Expat in any way.” Amongst other things, this force aides in solving many problems such as theft cases, accidents, motorbike rental and Jet Ski disputes, investigating and solving a variety of cases and standing by the Thai Tourist Police officers at their request. The volunteer’s team is organised and directed by 2 coordinators, K. Liz and K. Werner, as well as the Team Leader Erez, or ‘Chang’ as the locals like to call him. This unit is functioning at full force and thanks to all of the wonderful people involved from an array of Nationalities, their dedicated work and responses are continually providing help. What the Tourist Police need from you are more volunteers, people who care for others, people that would like to contribute to the community, that are flexible, easy going, understand human nature and…that can do at least one shift a week. No previous police or such experience is needed. Volunteers have to have a working or retired visa and live on Samui. Please come and volunteer and contribute to Samui, its people like you helping your fellow man, that keeps Koh Samui a safe place to visit and live. The Way of Tea with San-bao In China, the art and practice of drinking tea is about much more than merely soaking leaves in a cup of hot water. The tradition is rooted in Daoism, and emerged from a philosophy that honoured living a life of grace and gratitude, balance and harmony, and fulfilment and enjoyment - what the ancient Chinese called Cha Dao, or the Way of Tea. There is an ever-increasing awareness of the healthful properties of tea. Modern science continues to elucidate the specific chemical compounds that appear to be the active ingredients in tea. However, what of the tea drinking ritual itself? Is it possible that spending some time every day preparing the tea, according to time-honoured traditions, could possibly also be beneficial? One gets a break from the stresses of the day, an appreciation of the aroma of a fine-grade, single-leaf tea, and hopefully, good conversation with friends. Perhaps traditional methods of brewing also release some, as of yet undiscovered, element of the tea leaf. So many things in Chinese culture, and especially in traditional Chinese medicine, have appeared at first to be no more than folklore and superstition, and have later had their merit proven by modern science. If you are interested in this ancient ritual, and would like to experience the art of Tea-sharing, join in with San-bao as he performs his ceremonies. Tea-sharing with veteran San-bao, is held at The Spa Lamai Wednesday and Saturday from 2 pm until 5 pm, and at the Spa Village from noon until 3 pm. You don’t have to be there for the full three hours, the ceremonies are designed so that you can join and leave whenever you want to. San-bao is also presenting at Kamalaya every Tuesday and Friday from 3 pm until 5 pm, however call first to be sure his ceremony will be taking place. Admission at Kamalaya is 400 baht. CHINESE NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION IN MAENAM On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, there was a cultural event that took the island of Koh Samui by storm. Fire-breathing Dragons paraded the streets and lit up the Asian skies well into the morning as this well prepared celebration brought visitors and ethnic Chinese-Thai islanders together for an evening of good luck and fortune. The Chinese New Year festivities were hosted at the Joss House on Maenam Beach. The itinerary included a Lion Dance Show, Communicating with the Spirits Show, Fireworks, free food provided by an assortment of hotels from around the island, DJ’s and a live presentation by the band Bob Colour on the beach that lasted well into the morning hours. 100THB was collected from all persons entering the area, providing scholarships for students who are less fortunate and cannot afford tuition fees. The fantastic dragon and lion shows stole the crowd as the frenzied entertainers practiced speaking with the spirits as they pierced themselves, cut their tongues with razor sharp axes, and blessed the owners houses in their trail through the Maenam area with thunderous explosions to awaken the spirits for the New Year.

Come and play, learn, share, care, and be nurtured.... with Samui Mala Let’s start with some breaking news - good for the earth and good for us. Biorock coral reef expansion at Ban Tai We are delighted to hear that Biorock Thailand’s final design and proposal for expanding the reef at Ban Thai has been approved by Marubis. This is an expansion of the pilot structure that the Samui Mala funded in October 2009. The project will be considerably larger than the original structure, covering much more substrate and providing a large area of fish and coral habitat. The project is being run through Sun & Sea, a German sister organisation to Biorock Thailand, using Biorock Technology licensed through the Global Coral Reef Alliance. Thomas and his team at Biorock would like to begin work on this in the Spring. He will need a large volunteer effort for building, deployment, and coral transplanting. This is a great opportunity to get schools involved as well as the rest of the Mala community and also the perfect platform for a Community Workshop. We will be recruiting help for this project, so watch this space. You can read more about their work at www.globalcoral.org and www.biorock-thailand.com Sunday March 7th at June’s Cafe at 3:00pm Bernd on Oriental medicine Bernd will talk about Oriental Medicine as a powerful medium to gather information on a person’s state of health the body’s anatomy, surfaces, and other vital organs, including the ‘subtle anatomy’, without having to rely on blood tests, x-rays etc... If these vital and easy to recognise clues are acted upon, it leads the body to an amazing ability to respond to the healing stimuli, no matter what technique utilised. Bernd has been actively involved in complementary medicine for over 16 years and his interests include Flower Essences, Aromatherapy, various Massage Techniques, Mineral Therapy, Light Therapy, Meditation, Yoga, and Qi Gong as well as Dietary Therapy, various forms of Acupuncture including Chinese, Japanese and Korean Hand Acupuncture. For the last 5 years he has additionally trained in Chinese Herbalism, from which he graduated with a Masters degree. Note: This is part of a series of talks organised by Ruth Eedy - you can contact her for more information or to present something yourself. ruth.eedy@gmail.com Sunday March 7th at June’s Cafe at 6:30pm Detoxification - Another Perspective Yes - there are two talks on this day!! And both about health.... :) Since Spa Samui opened almost 20 years ago, Samui has become a magnet for people interested in detox and fasting. How safe is it? What do we need to consider before we start detoxing? Andrea Hahn is a highly regarded kinesiologist from Austria who has been a pioneer as an energy worker, teacher and pioneer in this fascinating field. Andrea is a WKO certified energy worker and author of the book, Geniefaktor – durch Früherkennung zum vollen Potenzial . Andrea is visiting Samui and would like to share some information, tips and caveats regarding health and detoxification.
Sunday March 14th at June’s Cafe Watch our calendar of events for our selection of movies that are selected by Julien of the Koh Phangan Film Festival. Earthbag Workshop on Koh Phangan Weekend of 13th and 14th of March This is a great opportunity to do a hands-on weekend workshop in March 2010 with one of the world’s foremost earthbag builders. Owen Geiger has two engineering degrees and a PH.D in social and Economic development and is the founder of the Geiger Research Institute of Sustainable Development (GRISB). See www.Earthbagbuilding.com Earthbag technology is a sustainable, cheap and local solution to architecture… It is ‘dirt cheap’ using local, durable, non-toxic natural materials. Earthbags filled with soil can provide thermal mass, or filled with lighter weight materials can provide insulation. The flexibility of the elements also eliminates the need for tensile materials in the structure. For permanent housing, the bags should be covered with some kind of plaster for protection, but this plaster can also be earthen and not particularly costly. While the course is in English, perhaps we can find somebody who would be happy to translate. This shop is organised by Julien (of Film Festival fame) and Hubert who are building some earthbag structures on Koh Phangan. Please contact Julien at phanganearthworks@gmail.com or call him at 08 3393 9021 or Hubert at 08 4443 9838 Sunday March 21st at June’s Cafe Magick, Mystery and Manipulation (A Synopsis) Our speaker this Sunday is Tony Assassin. Tony says: “We live in a world that is changing rapidly, a new day is dawning and whether or not humanity will see the rising sun of that day lies in the balance. To fully understand how and why we have arrived at this precipice we must gain a knowledge of where we began our journey and the forces that guide our civilization. After many years of research studying numerous superficially unconnected subjects, I discovered a common denominator. That ‘common denominator’ was a system of what is known as ‘High Magick’ and the secret societies that utilise and support it. Throughout the history of civilization, the ‘movers and shakers’ that have been at the forefront of societies evolution have invariably been connected to, or influenced by members of the Brotherhood. With this in mind, this series of talks is presented with a view of de-mystifying the subject of ‘Magick’ and its stated aims ,so that we can all truly appreciate and comprehend the ‘Magickal Universe’ that we exist in. Pandora’s Box has been opened and once open can never be closed. Welcome!” Calendar of events on www.samuimala.org/calendar.html

HOROSCOPE
M
ystic PEG HAS TRAVELLED THE GLOBE OVER THE PAST 80 YEARS, SEARCHING FOR WISDOM, TRAINING WITH ZEN MASTERS, AND AVOIDING ALIEN ABDUCTION. TODAY SHE COLLECTS HER THOUGHTS AND FOCUSES ON GIVING YOU A DIRECT AND MEANINGFUL OUTLOOK ON YOUR LIFE AND WHAT SHE KNOWS ABOUT PEOPLE WHO LOOK TO THE STARS FOR ANSWERS ABOUT THEIR LIVES. FUTURE INQUIRES CAN BE MADE TO: glenn@siammap.COM
Aries: March 21 - April 19
Your resolve to wait until you are married is very creditable. But, if you wait you’ll only think about the years wasted where you could have been doing the ‘sticky thing’. Horoscopes have always had a tendency to be wrong for you. Round things may become useful to you today. Life’s problems however, cannot all be solved by round things.
Taurus: April 20 - May 20
Scorpio: October 23 - November 21
The best you could ever really hope for will appear to you in a daydream. Although this vision may appear to look like you with a handlebar moustache, the truth is even more frightening. Many of your feelings can be expressed in the form of haikus. However, you’ll be lucky if you can find anyone who gives a flying hoot, or who actually finds them impressive in any way.
Gemini: May 21 - June 20
The best of excuses are those that are plausible (so, not ones that involve you, super-powers and hordes of sexy friends). Everything you say this month will be like a very beautiful flower, spreading its seed amongst cacti. See how clever you can be today by attempting to count your lose change inside your pocket WITHOUT taking your hand or the money out.
Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21
The very thought of coming up with a horoscope for you made me laugh. Taking a bit-part in a local theatre production may help you get out and start living a lie. Don’t be afraid to spread damn dirty lies. You must decide how to continue this month, whether it’s by questioning everything that happens or, instead, letting it all wash over you like the water from a maiden’s bathwater.
Your mind is filled with thoughts of sexual inadequacy and hey, maybe you’re right. Danger, excitement, thrills and spills. These are buzzwords that may catch your attention, possibly in the form of a horoscope. It all used to be so much easier, but with age, you’re finding certain things much more difficult. Just because people laugh at you doesn’t make you a comedian.
Cancer: June 21 - July 22
Capricorn: December 22 - January 19
Leo: July 23 - August 22
Aquarius: January 20 - February 18
Virgo: August 23 - September 22
Pisces: February 19 - March 20
The screaming of multiplication tables during lovemaking may help you temper yourself but is also likely to alienate your partner who will assume that your heart really isn’t in it. Remember, it’s unfair to expect your friends and family to provide you with alibis. Be playful at heart and you’ll reap the reward of having more friends under the age of 10. You’re doing really well, keep it up!
If you think it’s my job to tell you good news, you’re wrong pal. You’re going down! Your appetite may increase today as the doctors finally remove the scissors they left inside you during your last operation. Timid creatures are often those to find first love. Be less brash, learn to control your flailing arms, and do try to fart less.
The stars are looking good for you this month, as Mars pulls into a region of the sky that foretells of woe, misery, despair and false-hope. In other countries, how you’ll feel about this month could most likely get you arrested and shot... at dawn, without a blindfold, and with a stinging sensation in the groin.
56
Libra: September 23 - October 22
Don’t trust little birdies, they’re renowned liars. This month may seem like an extraordinary opportunity to get even with the world, but the world may have different ideas. What you hear and what was said may differ, so be aware of either your failing hearing or your increasing hatred of those talking to you. The odds against surviving today without any of your limbs is low.
www.siammap.com
While we are not all superhuman, some of us are at least able to go to sleep without pissing ourselves in the night. If you don’t claim that free holiday, you’ll never win it. Temptation is everywhere, especially if you’re willing to look everywhere for it. Sometimes the only way to succeed is by murdering the entire board of directors. If you feel ill, a visit to the doctor could be in store.
Itching may be a sign of bad things to come. The Latin phrase for what you’re feeling right now is: “Non semper inquisit damascus aroooooo!”. There’s a little bit of dog language mixed in there too. Damaging words reach your ears after a disagreement over a neighbour’s pets. Damaging “poo” will be flung back across the garden fence if the issue is not resolved very soon.
Sing a song inside and to hell with the dark clouds that await you. Love is a wonderful thing that can truly change your life for the better. However, the chances of this happening to you anytime are so remote that you might as well quit pretending that you’re well liked, go home and eat ice cream until your brain freezes.
