You should never ask your twelve-year-old brother to hold a tomato... Welcome World Travellers! The Year of the Tiger has been patiently crouching in the wings, waiting for its time to pounce upon us and into our lives. Fantastically, and somewhat ironically the celebration of the Chinese New Year falls on Valentine’s Day this solar year, on what has been historically dubbed the day of love February 14th. This combination of events will without doubt lead to one of the most powerful days of 2010, as the characteristics of the Tiger are put into play with the love rituals that absorb us all with gifts of poetry and chocolate. We can expect, according to the Chinese Zodiac, an explosive year earmarked with the potential of disagreements and disasters of an assorted variety. But it will also be the beginning of a new decade and will result in nothing less than a big, bold year. Nothing will be done this year on a small, timid scale. Everything good, and bad will be followed through to the extremes. Fortunes can be both made, as well as lost. If you are one for taking chances, gamble for the high stakes, but understand that the odds are stacked against you. Friendships, joint ventures and deals requiring mutual trust and cooperation made at this time are claimed to be brittle and easily broken. However, the forceful and vigorous Tiger Year can also be used to inject new life and vitality into lost causes, sinking ventures and drab or failing industries. It will likewise be a time for massive change, for the introduction of new and bold, especially highly controversial ideas... I suppose that this culmination of prophesies are not all pessimistic and depressing. My suggestion to you for this Chinese New Year is to hang on to your sense of humour. Take an extended vacation, perhaps for the duration of the year until the dark clouds have passed. Spend your time looking at seashells and beautiful sunsets. Bask under the endless blue radiance that Samui offers holidayers this month, and take the time to learn how to snorkel or dive into the waters cascading with colour surrounding our shores. Use the explosive nature of the Tiger characteristics to indulge in lovemaking, and if there is any call for flames - then use their power to rekindle forgotten friendships, lost loves, or in the quest for new ones. Bring the passion of the Tiger into your bedroom, into your heart, and into the lives of those around you mulling in doom and gloom of another year of hardships. The start to this year is intertwined with the most romantic day of the year, so perhaps the fuel for the fire the Tiger will create will consist of chocolates and heart-shaped candies. The fiery heat of the Tiger’s year will no doubt touch everyone’s life. In spite of its negative aspects, we must realize that it could have a cleansing effect. Just as intense heat is necessary to extract precious metals from their ores, so the Tiger year can bring out the best in us. I leave you with a few words of advice during the changing of the times. Words that you just might want to remember and live by when things start to heat up a bit. There is a time when you just have to stick your feet out the window... You should never ask your 12-year old brother to hold a tomato... You should never jump down the stairs with your hands in your pockets... Read this magazine for the enjoyment of finding out where you are and what there is to do on Koh Samui... And never forget...Tigers love candy... Enjoy.

Land of smiles

by Glenn R. Wallis

Take Off

Your Shoes “This is man in his entirety, blaming his shoe when his foot is guilty.” The signs are apparent.

Adventures without the rough edges The proof that many others are aware is spread across the front of the proprietorships with care. Shoes are sometimes carefully placed, slippers flipped in haste, and even mounds of footwear litter most every entranceway to buildings in Thailand. Yet there are those that still cross the thresholds, and with or without intention, the borderlines. There are countless ways on Koh Samui to find oneself in the company of the many that have come to be labeled as ‘disrespectful’. There is losing one’s temper or shouting, publicly insulting someone, dressing inappropriately, stepping over someone or by simply placing ones feet on objects not meant for such an act. The feet appear to attract most of the attention when the possibility of offending a Thai person comes into play, and ultimately a part of our body that we should become more diligent in controlling when visiting the Land of Smiles. One of the most read global tourist information guides, The Lonely Planet, informs the vacationer to be aware of the differences in culture and lifestyle of the Thai people in comparison to most of the Western worlds’. Perhaps it is not written clear enough when it states that “The feet are the lowest part of the body (spiritually as well as physically)”, and then dives into a list of do’s and don’ts, including the subject we find ourselves today reiterating. “Take off your shoes please!” is posted in one form or another on the doorways to grocery stores, pharmacies, clothing stores, laundry’s,

6

www.siammap.com

Wats and many more such quarters, and still this simple and obvious custom is often ignored. Once again, the Lonely Planet indicates that to a Thai “wearing shoes indoors is disgusting and the behaviour of those who ignore the custom is nothing short of boorish”. In Western cultures, it is more than apparent to most cognitive human beings, that it would be considered extremely rude if one were to walk into someone’s house as a guest, and not remove all footwear. A moment of astonished silence ensuing the act would without doubt be followed up with words, if not with phrases targeting the nameless wrongdoer. So why this constant disregard for compliance? There are two avenues of choice to answer this question. Perhaps no one has been forward enough to tell such a person that their actions are considered disrespectful, and thus we choose ignorance as an excuse. Then, there is the only alternative, arrogance, to which we will not waste any time discussing as this is simply one of the many moulds of man that we wish would be broken. The Land of Smiles tolerates all, so it appears, but the disdain remains when the visitors have all gone home. Home is where the Samuians remain, with our dirty footprints and seaside sand carpeting their floors as a reminder of our presence. It is relevant to indicate that there are a great number of businesses that are operated out of the homes of Proprietors. In effect, when one enters such an establishment, one is walking into the home of a Samuian, and often enough into their front living quarters.

A light hearted reminder on Samui

This is not the greatest of all wrongdoings on Samui, nor in Thailand as a whole for that matter. It is merely one of the acts that have an impact on how Western Peoples are viewed by a nation deeply rooted in their beautiful culture. Perhaps it is because of the passive demeanor of Samuians that we have begun to see the change of this expectation of entrance into newer establishments. As Western civilization brings commerce to the Island of Samui, so must it evolve in catering to the Western ways. We witness this adjustment within venues such as 7-11, MacDonald’s and Starbucks, however it is still a practical courtesy to look before you leap and not assume that footwear is acceptable within a place of work. There are however, some things here that should never change, and one of those is respecting the people who have lived here since the beginning of time. Visitors are invited to Samui, and into Thailand as guests. It is stamped on every Tourist’s passport that the Kingdom of Thailand has officially invited the owner of said passport to stay for a period of time, as a guest of the people of Thailand. We have been invited into their country, into their homes, into their lives, and at the end of the day into their living quarters that they use as a workshop or store. The least we can do is show some signs of gratefulness, and remove our shoes. We hope that the reason we fail to follow this cultural rule is because no one told us the significance of such an act. DK Eyewitness Travel Guides tells the purchaser to buy sensible shoes that can be easily removed when entering a Thai building. Now we have told you why. Perhaps there is a way to preserve the more than simple culture of removing ones footwear on Samui. We will take the necessary steps of educating those who are not aware. We will take baby steps. We will put one foot in front of the other. We will take one small step for Samui… And you will kindly take off your shoes.

Samui in Brief

Samui’s Towns & Beaches

THE ISLAND OF KOH SAMUI has been a hidden treasure for paradise seekers over the past 40 years. Today the beaches remain to be the passion of the island, with resorts and hide-away bungalows spilling out and onto the white sands. Each beach on Samui has maintained its own personality, relating to the area that it lies within. Featured here are some of the highlights of each of these areas for the holiday traveller to enjoy.

Chaweng

Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Samui. It is also the largest tourist centre with more than 1.5 million travellers visiting annually. 5 Star luxury resorts share the space with more economical accommodation choices, along with a 5 kilometre street of stalls and shops that sell everything Thailand is famous for. Prices are a little higher here than in other areas of the island, but the range of choices in food, accommodation and entertainment is impressive, making this beach and its surroundings, the center of activity for many visitors.

Lamai

Lamai has often been referred to as Samui’s second beach, but there are many who believe it has a greater beauty than that of Chaweng. The waters are excellent for swimming and the beaches and streets are less crowded. The southern end of the bay features elegant granite boulders while the beach itself seems endless. The nightlife in Lamai hosts some excellent restaurants and bars scattered along its strip. The surrounding area notably hosts some of the islands best spas and health resorts available. If you wander off the beaten track here, you might get a glimpse of some true Thai culture.

Big Buddha Beach

If your stay is brief, Big Buddha Beach area offers convenience due to its close proximity to the airport, as well as to boats chartered for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Prices for accommodation and provisions remain reasonable, and there are a growing number of fine dining options to compliment the local Thai restaurants and beach bungalow cuisine. Facilities and services are abundant along the main road, making this one of the best locations for a vibrant night-life.The Big Buddha itself can be seen overlooking the entire area and remains to be the focal attraction.

Mae Nam

The beach is a huge horseshoe of soft sand that offers a spectacular view of the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan. There are a number of good local restaurants and businesses along the beach, as well as located on the main ring road. Mae Nam is home to many of

8

www.siammap.com

the island’s residential developments with a growing quantity of long-term visitors and expats, giving the area a strong sense of community. The hills behind Mae Nam provide the location for the island’s spectacular world-class golf resort.

Bophut

Bophut stands out as the only village on Samui that exudes authentic island charm. It consists of a single street lined with traditional shophouses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, sales shops and guesthouses. The distinct designs of the beachside dining sector, as well as the chosen cuisine that is available, have created an exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere. Bophut is expanding constantly, generating new wining and dining options every year. Despite its growth, the essential seaside appeal remains, making it one of the island’s most attractive locations.

Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam

The unspoiled South-West Coast of Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi has seen the least change of any area on the island. The romantic coastline here overlooks the spectacular Five Islands and Anthong Marine Park. Several excellent beachside seafood restaurants, bungalows and resorts can be found scattered along the coast offering the most idyllic locations to watch the sun setting into the sea. Palms come right down to the water’s edge, dense greenery right up to the sands, with swimming an idyllic experience. Out to sea are the mountains of the mainland, distant and hazy, fading to purple as evening comes.

Hua Thanon

The Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon offers a handful of seafood restaurants, but its main attraction lies in the ancient cultures of the local fishermen. Intricately painted wooden boats are used to this day to catch and deliver fish directly to the local markets. Take a stroll through its market and capture a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s original communities. Beyond Hua Thanon, the southern coast offers some of the most unspoiled natural scenery on Samui. You will find quaint local villages and coconut plantations that have endured the test of time.

Nathon

Mae Nam bang por

This is the island’s main administrative centre. All government offices, banks, as well as the main ferry pier are located in Nathon, making it the most important place for communication with the Thai mainland. Nathon also boasts a number of original teak shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more traditional, Chinese influenced Samui life. Any major local events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park in front of the main pier in Nathon. Visitors tend to pass through this beautiful village on their way to either Chaweng or Lamai, missing some of the least expensive shopping on the island. A nightly food market establishes itself here regularly, giving visitors their first taste of the delights available on Samui.

Bophut

CHOENG MON

bang rak

Nathon

Chaweng

CHOENG MON

Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays, speckled with white sandy beaches upon its coastline. Despite its close proximity to Chaweng, about 15 minutes north and 5 minutes from Big Buddha, the beaches have remained quiet and the waters clean. Choeng Mon’s wide sandy beaches feature a rock formation on one side, and the island of Koh Som that you can easily paddle out to on the other. This is a very family friendly area, with exclusive resorts abundantly situated along the water’s edge. Relatively upmarket, inexpensive accommodation is virtually non-existent in this area. This lesser-known beach is located in a very secluded part of Koh Samui, on the northeast corner of the island where most of the bays have been given over to private residential developments.

WORLD TRAVELLER

The Origins

of

Love Switzerland

“What you see before you, my friend, is the result of a lifetime of chocolate.” The month of romance is upon us! Curious how Valentine’s Day has unfolded through the pages of history, defining a day to remember those we love, and acknowledging those whom we would like to profess our love to. And what is even more remarkable is how we have come to celebrate this day, pouring out our passions with the assistance of that creamy and dark coloured creation called chocolate. So what should you buy for your Lover on February 14th, a day marked to embrace the passions of the human race? According to the famous card-makers of Hallmark, there are many of us who choose this day to search for and to impress our loved ones, or love to be. The manner in which we do it ranges from the simple sending of a love letter or note, to cascading upon our doted ones the sweet, sweet flavours of Cocoa. Truly one of the most remarkable traits, or should we say unique characteristics of the human race is our ability to love. For some of us it becomes our complete intention in life to find what we relate to as ‘true love.’ Sadly enough, we are not all destined to be the capitulators of another’s fondness, or acts of selflessness, perpetuating that light-headed feeling associated with ‘being in love’. Some of us just love chocolate! And the woozy enlightenment that comes with the divulging in it will give us any excuse to get our hands on it, defining a good enough reason to forfeit over a few sentiments of affection. When thinking of getting our hands on chocolates, there is no better place to find it than within the alpine nation of Switzerland. So we propose to you that for that special one in your life this year, schedule a fantastic journey into the land of chocolate, where we dare state that the origins of love will melt not only your hearts, but in your mouths. If you are a treasure hunter of natural beauty, then taking a winter journey across Grindelwald/ Interlaken to Zermatt is a must. Here your eyes will feast on the huge deposits of snow glittering like white gold from mountain peaks, while the accumulations of rarities compared to diamonds will delight any sweet tooth at one of the local confectionaries. Savour the homemade chocolates of the famed international brands of Toblerone, Swiss and Alprose at Spruengli in Zurich, Hanselmann at St. Moritz, and Poyet of Montreux.

“True love is defined as the capacity to break a chocolate bar into two pieces with your bare hands - and then share eating the pieces.” 10

The Koh Phangan

Film Festival “Filmmaking, like sex, isn’t a polite enterprise. It involves a lot of mess, sweat and tears, and the bottom line is, if somebody ain’t screaming, you’re not doing your job.” James Woods by Glenn R. Wallis

The quaint and historic island of Koh Phangan has held for most travellers a myriad of possibilities when it comes to visiting her shores. For most tourists who have had the opportunity to set foot upon her coastline, it has been during what has become known as the ‘Let your hair down event’ in Thailand, the Full Moon Party. The moonlit skies all but silent with the parade of fireworks, techno lightshows and the heart stopping thumping of bass filled music from the scenario of the renowned Full Moon raves. Apart from this backpacker’s paradise spectacle, there has been a more artistic and earth-bound movement filling in the gaps between the gyrating euphoria of the Full Moon festivities. The island has diversely become a cultural centre over the course of the past 3 years as well, hosting one of the most dramatic events within the Gulf of Siam, The Phangan Film Festival (PFF).

Where to go for the PFF As in 2008 and 2009, the PFF will take place at the spacious Holiday Beach Resort on the outskirts of Koh Phangan’s biggest town of Thongsala. The resort is located 100 metres off the main road that connects Thongsala and Baan Tai. As you drive from Thongsala towards Baan Tai (and Haad Rin) watch out for a Yamaha shop on your left hand side, the resort’s driveway is right opposite this landmark. The Cast Julien L. Balmer the Festival’s Director leads the team of Lori Doyle - Deputy Festival Director, Saithip Noochsamnieng - Festival Consultant, Markus Aklin - Festival Consultant and Eyal Matsliah - Marketing Consultant, creating a multicultural and highly creative group.

This cultural event grew out of a pure love for meaningful independent filmmaking by a group of world travellers who rejoice in the cross-cultural expansion that subtly transforms all those who wander far and wide, embracing film as a medium for this soul-level evolution. The PFF is committed to providing the local community as well as travellers to this beautiful tropical island with a diverse presentation of high-quality independent films from around the world. The festival themes are NATURE and SPIRIT; two widely cherished and intimately related subjects that bear increasing relevance for both Phangan Island as well as our planet at large. The successfully brilliant third annual Phangan Film Festival will take place from the 12th to the 14th of February this year, and if you are anywhere near the Samui archipelago, you won’t want to miss out on what this event has to offer. The aspiration of the sponsors, applicants and producers of the film festival is that their initiative will profoundly touch festival-goers, stimulate thoughtful reflection on our own ways of life, and bring about appropriate attitudinal change and responsible action. For the community, they wish to open the doors to spiritual activism and ultimately contribute to the harmonious development of Koh Phangan for all of its inhabitants and visitors of today, as well as for the tomorrows to come.

Julien L. Balmer, a Swiss independent filmmaker who has backpacked to more than 30 countries and speaks five languages, is also a Yoga teacher and practitioner living peacefully on the spectacular northwest side of Koh Phangan. His most recent film effort, Through the Eastern Gate, made its Thailand debut at the 2008 PFF. Julien’s greatest love is for film that reveals the magic and depth of spiritual life and transformation. He hopes that the mystical path of Self-discovery may be unveiled and accessed through films that serve to inspire and lead those everywhere who search for the true meaning of life.

Lori Doyle discovered her love of media expression working as a young journalist throughout her university years in the United States. Currently, she is an editor for a London-based company and a Yoga teacher. An aspiring filmmaker and screenwriter, Lori worked as a film extra in 2005 – a stint that opened her eyes to the fascinating and magical world of film and sparked her interest in it further; she recently began writing her first screenplay. Much of each year, she lives on beautiful Koh Phangan Island in southern Thailand, surrounded by nature and filled with inspiration. Saithip Noochsamnieng is the co-founder of Samui Channel Television, a station dedicated to the dissemination of reliable public - and private-source information on sustainable development. Through documentaries, news programs, and public announcements, Samui Channel aims to help island viewers learn the truth about broad trends and local current directions in socially responsible lifestyles. Saithip is also a scriptwriter and directed The Senses of Koh Samui, a television documentary on water preservation. The film, which brought awareness to the subject of water resources and highlighted the philosophy behind sustainable living, was presented with the Thailand Tourism Award in 2008. Frank, Captain Moo, a boat named the Kaisso Kaia, and some guy we call Jay-San by Glenn R. Wallis

man is devoted to his Water Buffalo, and his antics are carried out with love. Watching him in action is like viewing a 3-Stoogies movie, and all in good fun. He’ll join you for a sunset cruise and sing into the night skies as you watch the sun setting into the Gulf of Siam, and he has sailor yarns that belong in storybooks to share. This is where the Kaisso Kaia emanates her true charm, from her enigmatic crew from 3 different continents of the globe. Add in the beauty of the ship herself and your cruise will be one filled with laughter, stunned silence at the magnificence of Thailand’s gulf, and an order or two belted out from the captain’s chair to remind you that you are on a sailing vessel in the high seas.

his life, Lulu Frank and the other love of

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Frank for quite some time, as well as his incredible sailing boat for charter off the island of Koh Samui, the Kaisso Kaia. I’ve been aboard her a few times, but I have to tell you that every time I climb the few steps onto her Teakwood decks, the same feeling returns. Absolute wonder. The Kaisso Kaia is a beautiful 63 ft, traditional wooden ketch called a Pinisi, built of Teak, Ironwood and Bangkirai. Created in Pulau Bonerate, southern Sulawesi, Indonesia in 1999 by the Konjo boat builders, she has been thoroughly renovated in 2006 to sport the incredible design of an active sailing and cruising vessel. She is set with every comfort, and equipped to make your day on-board safe and comfortable. And whether you are looking for adventure or simply for some peace, she will take you to the most exotic, deserted and magical beaches, for an unforgettable experience on your holiday. Frank has hired a few new hands to help him on deck, and the charisma of the Kaisso Kaia has just been enhanced 100-fold. Captain Moo is the vessel’s commander, and he sets her sail on your voyage to a destination you have spent a lifetime dreaming of. For an afternoon at sea, there are plenty of places to go, and just in case you didn’t know, Captain Moo knows some of the most secret getaway spots

around. All you have to do is ask, and they’ll take you there. Just one restriction...Frank, the owner of the boat, has told me personally that he will not take me to Canada, even though he said to me “Ask me to take you anywhere, and we’ll go!” He really meant around the island and area, but I’m always one to push the envelope. Then there is Jay-san. I love saying his name. It’s really Jason, he’s an American, but the Thai people with their wonderful accents annunciate his name in two parts, so who am I to disagree. The fun part of his job is to make sure that you are having the time of your life. He is the deckhand who brings you drinks, prepares your meals, rescues you from floating things in the ocean and will even fetch your sunglasses as you pitch them off of the boat. Try it sometime and watch him go to work! Last, but far from least, is the owner of this sailing boat, Frank. He is present on most tours, taking his hand at steering the Kaisso Kaia, yelling out orders in the fashion of a true owner, and pretty much being a pain in the ass. He adores his boat more than a Thai

It really is quite wonderful to spend a day, or an evening out on the Kaisso Kaia, visiting the incredible and idyllic scenery that Thailand is famous for. It is breathtaking to lie back and look into the heavens watching shooting stars trail across the twilit skies. The day trips that are available on the Kaisso Kaia will engrave memories to last for lifetimes, and the stories of your adventures will live on to remind you that life has been good to you. For an experience that will uplift your spirits, satiate your hunger for adventure, and provide you with new hope that there are good people still left in the world, meet Frank, Captain Moo, Jay-san and the great beauty herself...Kaisso Kaia.

Culinary Controversy

the real price of a bowl of soup

www.Nathalies-Lifestyle.com

by Daniel coutts

Sharks have managed to survive on this planet for over 400 million years. Now, humans threaten to put a stop to their existence over a bowl of soup. The origins of the shark historically classify them as one of the remaining ‘living dinosaurs’ left on our planet. Today shark populations are under increasing risk and pressure with more than 125 countries worldwide engaged in the trade of shark products. Estimated data indicates that as many as 79 million sharks are caught each year, which is equivalent to around 1.73 million tons of shark. Extinction of some species of shark have already been found at a local level, such as the Oceanic Whitetip, and declines in populations of some species of up to 99% have been revealed globally. The number of sharks caught has risen rapidly over the past 25 years as a result of over fishing, combined with an increased demand for the Asian delicacy known as Shark Fin Soup. This dish has been part of Chinese culture since the Ming Dynasty period dating back many centuries. Over time the popularity and demand of this Chinese frippery has steadily risen and is very popular at weddings among other special occasions. Perceived as a luxury item, the demand has risen in line with the increased wealth of the Chinese middle class. A Chinese survey conducted by WildAid and the Chinese Wildlife Conservation Association in 2006, revealed that 35% of participants said they had consumed Shark Fin Soup in the last year, while 83% of participants in an online survey conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature, stated that they had consumed Shark Fin Soup at some time. Like many other Asian delicacies, it is widely believed that eating shark fin has its own unique health benefits, and is regarded as a tonic food and

16

www.siammap.com

aphrodisiac that strengthens the internal organs and retards aging, further reinforcing the demand. Shark fin itself is however only one ingredient in Shark Fin Soup, and on its own is almost tasteless. It serves the main purpose of texture and consistency, thus avoiding the need for other thickening ingredients such as corn flour, with the key flavour typically derived from the use of chicken or pork. There is no scientific evidence to support any of the supposed benefits of consuming shark fin, and in contrast, chemical analyses of some shark fins have discovered extremely high levels of Mercury. Shark fins on sale in Thailand have been found to contain as much as 7 times the FDA limit of Mercury permissible for human consumption. Ingesting high levels of Mercury is known to block the formation of nerve cells in the brain, and is therefore particularly dangerous for pregnant women and children. The findings of this report in 2002 provoked a $2.6million dollar lawsuit by a group of shark fin restaurant owners and retailers, who declared this report had damaged their businesses and were demanding that WildAid withdrew their claim. It is not surprising that those involved in the shark product industry would attempt to overturn any negative statements about the product, in support of the global trade of shark products worth US$310 million, with a single serving of the soup in upmarket restaurants selling for as much as $100 per bowl. Shark fins retail for as much as $700 per kg., which makes the fins of a large shark alone potentially worth thousands of dollars. The process of ‘Finning’ is extremely barbaric as well as wasteful. Typically, all the fins of the shark are removed before it is discarded into the ocean where they either bleed to death or drown, wasting 98% of the shark. The reason for this is predominantly due to the relatively low value of shark meat, and the need to make room for more valued catch onboard fishing vessels.

It is the high volumes of shark caught and killed each year, fuelled by consumer demand that is driving shark populations to extinction. Sharks are typically slow to reproduce. For example, the Atlantic Dusty Shark does not reproduce until it is 20 years old and the Spiny Dog Fish carries its pups for almost 2 years. The effects on the marine eco-system due to the dwindling shark populations have all ready been felt. Sharks are normally at the top of the food chain, helping to maintain and regulate the populations of marine life beneath them. A study in North Carolina, USA has found that the effect of diminishing shark species has caused an increase in the population of Skates and Rays which consume shell fish, and in turn has resulted in the Bay Scallop becoming commercially extinct, a Century old industry in that area. Another study in the Caribbean has discovered that Grouper fish species have increased as a result of a waning in shark species, causing a decrease of certain algae eating fish, which in turn has resulted in unregulated growth of algae across the reefs. The increased growth of algae has an adverse effect on the biodiversity of the reef, weakening its ability to cope with climate change and thus perpetuating the problem of global warming. Efforts to protect sharks have been made in some countries at government levels and by organisations such as WildAid, and some species such as the Whale Shark are protected globally. Unfortunately, complete global co-operation on the protection of sharks has yet to be achieved, despite the value of shark tourism outweighing that of edible shark products. In the Maldives shark generated tourism is worth three times that of shark products, spearheading a decision to introduce a national ban on targeted shark fishing. Tourists paid US$2.3million for shark watching dives in 2002 compared to the export of shark products, which only generated US$0.7million. Legislation to protect sharks can however be difficult to enforce, as some species of shark are also migratory and therefore only protected in certain areas and waters. So, whenever you find yourself faced with a bowl of Shark Fin Soup on the menu, make an informed choice. Be aware of the true price of the possible health risk, the barbaric and wasteful process of Finning, the effect on the eco-system and the added strains it is putting on climate change. Remember that shark tourism is a far more sustainable commercially viable industry, and if you are eating them, then you will not be viewing them in their natural environment for much longer. Personally, I will opt for the Chicken soup. After all there is little difference in the taste. For Information: www.wildaid.co.uk

Fin Facts: • Between 1959 and 2003, 1,857 people were struck and killed by lightening alone in the coastal states of the USA. In the same period, there were 740 shark accidents, 22 of which were fatal. • Alone in the USA and Canada approximately 40 people are killed each year by pigs – six times more than by sharks worldwide. • In Australia, the possibility of drowning is 20 times higher than being bitten by a shark. • Around the world, considerably more people are killed by falling coconuts than are bitten by sharks. • Alone in New York people are bitten 10 times more each year by other people than worldwide by sharks. • You are 235X more likely to be killed by lightning, 37.5X more likely to die by snakebite ... More people are killed each year by electric toasters than by sharks. • You are more likely to be killed by a falling TV than being killed by a shark. • Another way of looking at it, more people die eating shark (food poisoning / choking etc) than being eaten by one.

Luxury Living

A S U P ERLATIVE LIFE

Captain Charlie brings luxury lifestyle to the land of smiles

Nathalie Gütermann As a lifestyle journalist, I am constantly looking for hip styles, chic eats and secret sites. This month I would like to share one of my most original finds with you... The journey of a lifelong sailor and charismatic entrepreneur, mr.Charles dwyer. If you have any suggestions, have discovered quality establishments or personalities you think should be included in this Space, please feel free to contact our Lifestyle Contributor. Nathalie Gütermann at N@THALIE.com

The concept of entrepreneurship has a wide range of meanings. It originates from the French word, entreprendre, which means “to undertake” - be it a commitment, a job, a risk or even a journey.

home of the America’s Cup for over a hundred years. I started sailing against my father and brothers in club racing and moved on from there to professional sailing later in life.”

One man who brings everything together under one roof, or rather under one sail, is American Charles Dwyer, a charismatic globetrotter and passionate yachtsman, who since his childhood has always been willing to engage a new venture. Charles has travelled the world, finally making his home on Koh Samui. Initially he had never heard of this island in the Gulf of Thailand, but when he visited his sister in Singapore two decades ago, she mentioned something about the ‘Riviera of South East Asia’. Always keen to set out to sea, this curious adventurer sailed right in and docked at Bophut. Naturally, Charles didn’t arrive on a fishing boat, but on a super luxury yacht...

Fifteen years ago, Charlie’s dream came true when he joined “Yanneke Too” (www.yanneketoo.com), a beautifully designed privately owned luxury sailing yacht built by Camper & Nicholsons. As the owner’s representative he was directly involved on-site during the complete build of this true “gentleman’s yacht”. He then took over as Captain for “Yanneke Too’s” world cruise, and remains in that position today. Charles has over two hundred thousand miles of cruising experience to complement his racing background. This 36-metre yacht is a successful mixture of exemplary nautical elegance, modern technology and a ‘sporty’ on-deck atmosphere.

Charlie, as friends call him, started sailing as a child at the local Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island, racing J24’s, Shields, Etchel 22’s and other small boats. “I was born into a sailing family,” he says! “Newport was the capital of sailing in the US for years and

18

Eventually the “Yanneke Too” ended up at Thailand’s “Pride of the Gulf,” Koh Samui. And so did Charlie. “Samui is an absolute Gem. I have sailed around the world seven times and I have found Koh Samui and the surrounding islands to have some of the best cruising grounds in the world.”

“How important is the Samui Regatta,” I asked of this seasoned expert. “I think the Samui Regatta has put Samui firmly on the sailing map. I was involved in the first few years and have raced on one of the winning yachts. If the organizers are in for the love of the sport then this regatta will always be a great success.” “Unfortunately the ‘Yanneke Too’ is not available for charter, so what do you recommend to tourists if they want to charter a boat on Samui?” “It depends if they want to charter sail or power. There are a few very nice Motor and Sail yachts that are for charter on the island. No matter which you choose, make the journey out onto the Gulf of Siam and then just open your eyes and take in the natural beauty. The Angthong National Park has 80 small islands to be visited and is very special.” “Keep your eyes on the stars, but your feet firmly planted on the ground.” This may just be what Charlie Dwyer had in mind when he fulfilled a second lifelong dream. He built a luxury villa on the rocks of Samui, overlooking the sea. Set 125 metres up a mountainside facing picturesque Chaweng Bay, his ‘Eden Rock Villa’ and the adjacent ‘Rice House’ and

“Well, I still have many dreams. But the one I want to fulfil the most is to become an old Grandfather with lots of time and great tales to tell…” So, good luck Captain Charlie! Bon Voyage - and enjoy your journey that carries you with the wind and the waves!

‘Pineapple House’ have everything you could conceivably wish for in a home. Plunge pools, a spa, a steam room, inside and outside waterfalls, plus a fivemetre wide wrap-around lounge deck for enjoying Koh Samui’s finest view. You travelled the world, Charlie. Why did you make Koh Samui your home? “I didn’t! It found me! I sailed in here in 1996 and made a decision on dropping anchor that this would be my home. How can you not love this island? Eden Rock Villa is home for my wife and me. Due to my commitments on the ocean I cannot spend as much time at my house as I would like, and therefore we rent out the villa whilst I am at sea.” (www.edenrockvilla.com) There is a saying: Build a house, plant a tree. Did you? “I built an idea and it has grown into a lifestyle.” No surprise, Charlie Dwyer is also the man behind the annual Asia Superyacht Rendezvous (www.asia-superyacht-rendezvous.com). Together with Gordon Fernandes, General Manager of ‘Asia Pacific Superyachts’ he organizes this exclusive event which brings together owners and crews of both, motor and sailing yachts, to enjoy two days on and off the water, taking in Thailand’s natural beauty as well as sampling her culinary delights in a fun filled endof-year gathering. “Do you still have dreams?” I ask him at the “Gala Dinner” of the Superyacht Rendezvous, which ended the festivities.

Nathalie’s Lifestyle Tip: Koh Samui Regatta 2010 Anyone who would like to get a close-up view of great yachts should not miss the ‘Sawadee.com Regatta’ on Koh Samui, which will take place from the 31st of May until the 5th of June 2010. For the 9th consecutive year, this leading lifestyle and sporting event will attract competitive and social sailors from around the world. The five-day regatta is one of Asia’s most glamorous sailing events and is part of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championships. www.samuiregatta.com

Health & Self

Foods

that

boost the libido by Jo Rowkins Think of foods that tantalise the taste buds and stimulate the senses. Think juicy peaches, big, ripe bananas, slippery wet oysters, succulent strawberries and the delightful experience of slowly undressing sweet lychees revealing their sensual softness within. Avocados and figs, resembling the testicles, have been historically associated with passion, oysters have been hailed as the all-time aphrodisiac and chocolate is a lover’s favourite, so let’s take a closer look at the nutrition behind the titillation. Sexual health and therefore passion, is dependent upon healthy hormones and feel-good brain chemicals being produced. Firing at the right moment (referring to the hormones!) is crucial. Testosterone plays an important role, in women as well as men, in regards to sexual desire. Nutrients such as essential fatty acids, amino acids, zinc, and B vitamins are team players in the delicate act of stoking your fire. If any of these nutrients are missing, your hormones will be affected and it is probable that your fire may resemble an ember rather than a raging inferno.

Nutrients for your libido Zinc increases testosterone for healthy libido and encourages proper sperm production. In fact, the RDA (15mg) of zinc may be lost in just one ejaculation. (As zinc is also needed for healthy skin, it doesn’t take rocket-science to figure out why acne affects many teenage boys, who spend much of their time “losing zinc”!). Best zinc foods: pine nuts, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, seafood, oysters. Tyrosine, an amino acid, is needed for dopamine production to enhance sexual desire. Foods: chicken, turkey, oysters. Essential fatty acids are the building blocks of hormones, so stock up on the “good fats.” Almonds, walnuts, seeds, oily fish, avocados, hemp, and flax oil. L-arginine, an amino acid, is responsible for increasing nitrous oxide, which is needed to create blood flow for erection in a man, and to enhance the sexual experience, in a woman. Top arginine foods include almonds, chocolate and peanuts. B vitamins, particularly B6 & B5, support a healthy stress response. Stress has a detrimental effect on sex drive, so managing stress levels and providing specific nutrients to support the adrenal glands, will do wonders for your libido. B vitamin foods: whole grains, almonds, pine nuts, seeds, oats, avocado, brown rice, eggs, green leafy vegetables.

20

www.siammap.com

Eating for passion Focus on vegetables, oily fish, chicken, oysters, oats, nuts and seeds. Snack on raw almonds to increase energy for a night of passion and don’t forget chocolate, it’s the all-time classic libido food. Women love it and we all know that it mimics the feeling of being in love and an increase in endorphins. The darker the better, to increase antioxidants and minimise sugar and other non-aphrodisiac ingredients. Use warming herbs like cayenne pepper and ginger to increase blood circulation. Avoid saturated fats, refined white carbohydrates, processed and fried foods, as these play havoc with the hormones, clog up the arteries (depleting blood flow to all body parts) and dampen down the libido. Whilst a little alcohol may help get you in the mood, too much can ruin your performance and with “beer goggles” removed, you may wake up with less than you bargained for!

Looking through the windows

To your health Someone said that the iris is the living image of what the eye has been, what it is today, and even what it can become. “The iris is like a chalkboard which does not get erased.” Iridology (pronounced eye-ri-dol’-ogy) is the science of studying the iris or the coloured portion of the eye. Based on empirical observations, made by medical doctors and other researchers over the last 300 years, which suggest that certain dysfunctional states in the body are indicated by different textures and colour properties within the iris. It is useful for preventative health because these imbalances in the body can be detected early on, giving time for adjustments to be made using natural therapies. Jennifer Thompson is one such practitioner, and the visions she sees dancing through the windows to your health can be quite awakening. Originally, Jennifer was trained and schooled as an Environmental Systems Engineer, and left the American corporate arena in 2001 to discover the meaning behind life, and who she really was as an individual. She always wanted to be a Park Ranger. So she became one. She had an impulse to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in the times when it was not common for women to undertake such a task, and she reached the peak of her desire. Then it was a 6-month bike trip across the U.S.A., from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail. Little did she know that her life was beginning to reach the parallels of her healing journey. New Zealand tasted her sweat, and then in Australia this hard-core extremist fell ill. It was here that she first witnessed the insight that can come from Iridology. She visited a practitioner, who discovered that her eyes were two completely different colours for a reason. Jennifer knew that she was ill, the rashes, lack of sleep and 2 ½ years of discomfort had stopped her from vanquishing the physical challenges of the planet. It was the reason why, that she could not master.

You have that look in your eye...

Jennifer’s encounter with Iridology saved her from a long and drawn out life of misery. She wasn’t in any danger of dying from her illness; she was in danger of being conquered by the fear of it. Now she has taken a different approach to life by becoming a Comprehensive Certified Iridologist CCI, through the International Iridology Practitioner’s Association IIPA. Today Jennifer changes other people’s lives working on the isle of paradise as a Motivational Speaker, teaching workshops and retreats, focusing on personal detox, raw food coaching, runs green smoothie classes and holds private Iridology sessions. She makes it clear that her work does not confirm, discover nor treat disease, but it is a scientific means of discovering what your body needs to recover, and what it is missing that is essential to your health. She makes her clients focus on what they need to do when they get home and are away from the comforts of a holiday rest period, as well as how they can prioritise on things that are realistic to achieve. Jennifer is more than just another health-nut or witch-doctor practicing holistic medicine on Koh Samui. Her observances are what your body is telling you, and as she looks into your eyes you might find yourself surprised at what she sees, and what she brings back from the windows to your health may be things that you somehow already knew.

Gray Matter A Grey Day Dear Diary, How should I begin…? Well, my name’s Gray, actually it’s Graham, but I never really like that name very much. I want to keep track of my travels here in Thailand, but I’m afraid that I’m off to a very bad start. I came to Koh Samui just a short time ago and it all started to go south... literally. Here’s what happened. I rented a motorbike from the bungalow place that I am staying at. Nice little scooter, not like anything we have back home, and I decided to go out and cruise the island. I took the main road for a while and got kind of freaked out by the big trucks, so I decided to turn off onto a little cement road that I noticed was on my map. It looked like the road went over the mountain, so I checked my fuel, made sure I had some water, and set off on what I thought would be a pretty neat adventure. The road soon came to an end. Now when I say an end, I mean that the cement just suddenly stopped, dropped off about ten inches and then continued on in the form of a dirt track. I pulled out my trusty map, and sure enough I saw that the road did change colour and continue on, indicating that the road conditions changed. My fuel was still good, my rations not depleted and my curiosity heightened, so I went about my journey. These little scooters are pretty agile. I weaved and bounced my way along this dirt road until I came across a group of people in amongst coconut trees with long poles to cut down the fruit, and with ropes mysteriously leading up the trees. I stopped, and set about getting out my camera to take some action photographs of the plantation workers and their curious labour. I stepped off the road and into the ground cover that swept across the open area in which they worked. As I raised my camera up to try and zoom in on the end of the rope that was dancing through the trees, something grabbed my leg. Faster than you can say “Jack Rabbit” a huge ball of hair with claws and fangs climbed up my body and took hold of my camera! I stumbled backwards and fell on the ground, and I’m embarrassed to admit, screamed out in fright. Two furry hands held tight to my camera zoom

lens, and I lay there face to face with a gorilla! I found out later that it actually was not a gorilla, but one of the monkeys used for picking coconuts in Thailand. But if you have ever seen one of these things up close, you’d think a little differently too!

The rest is history. I am sitting in a very interesting cell waiting to see what the fine is going to be for assaulting a monkey. A MONKEY!!! Can you believe this? The tourist police officer that just left me here says that I should say a quick prayer.

I scampered backwards trying to shake my camera free from the death grip this monkey had on me, the straps pulling tightly around my neck. Now the monkey started to scream. It was an awful sound! Instantly the movie Jurassic Park came to mind. I began to scream even louder. There we were, a primate and me, tumbling around on the ground pulling back and forth on my camera, yelling at each other in unknown languages.

“A prayer for what?” I asked him, thinking that maybe I’ve committed an unspeakable crime, and I was facing life imprisonment. “You’d better just hope that the monkey admits it was all a misunderstanding.” I looked at him bewildered, “A MISUNDERSTANDING? IT ATTACKED ME!”

Then it happened…the monster grabbed my face with his leathery hand, his spear-like nails cutting into my cheek, trying to distract me from taking back his claimed prize. I did what I’m sure any one would have done, if in the same situation. I punched him square in the nose as hard as I could. The monkey screams were suddenly silenced and the ape fell onto my chest with a thud. I flipped the beast over and jumped to my feet.

The officer at this point stopped in his tracks before turning the lock to my cell. “With an attitude like that” he scolded me, “I wouldn’t be surprised if the monkey doesn’t drop the charges!” Talk soon as soon as I know more. Gray

With a momentous start to 2010, Oriental Living has already made another splash in the world of hotel refurbishment. Their refreshing re-design of the essential spaces at the 5-star Napasai Resort has been a great success. The team worked its design magic to create an ambience with a very special, tropical feel. A passion for hot colours and 5 star comfort was combined with a perfect mix of Asian contemporary design, redefining this beautiful island hideaway. Each villa at Napasai has been designed as a colourful feast for the eyes, with the sensual power of the sun’s colour palette bringing warm and vibrant tones throughout. Bold wall hangings from Jim Thompson enliven the walls, working seamlessly with the splashes of colour provided by the soft furnishings. The Box Furniture details, exclusive to Oriental Living, are simply gorgeous and raise the style temperature, putting passion into the design, whilst exuding sophistication with an eco-friendly twist. The resounding success at Napasai has showcased Oriental Living’s creative talent for projects with hotels and high-end villas, and now with another stamp of approval. It’s exciting to think what may come next. The end of 2009 saw the launch of their completely overhauled website at www.oriental-living.net. The new website features over 350 unique furniture items from their exclusive outdoor and indoor collections. Also featuring in the interior projects section of the website are pictures as

well as YouTube videos of several completed projects. Upcoming will be a section with the Oriental Gallery Asian Art collection, which will be very appealing! Since the company was established in 1991, the island has seen many changes and Oriental Galleries have evolved with the times, always keeping customer satisfaction as their highest priority. These creative New Year beginnings have been echoed by the reopening of Oriental Gallery, with the launch of a new extended gallery space behind the furniture showroom in Maenam. This fabulous, blank canvas exhibit space is filled with unusual unique pieces, handpicked by the owner Michael for their beauty and cultural relevance. With such a great eye and a deep filled passion for Asian Art, Michael has “created a significant space to display beautiful and unique pieces.” The Burmese Stupas, so elegant and curvaceous in form, with delicate details and great Buddhist religious importance for the placing of offerings, stand proudly in all their glory and would be a true conversation piece in anyone’s home. This, in essence, is what Oriental Gallery would like to achieve with all its chosen pieces. Michael’s “love of Asian art” fills the room and it is a worthy space to stop, absorb the beauty and simply enjoy the spirit of both ancient and contemporary creativity.

A Contemporary Approach To Classical Cuisine

Natura Cucina Essenziale by Chef Stefano Leone The island of Koh Samui is no new residence for great Chefs. In fact, if you were to gather up all of the Master and Executive Chefs that inhabit our island, you would find yourself with some of the finest and most sought after gastronomic creators of cuisine on the planet. Resorts and restaurants line the beaches in splendour, exuding the divinity of these experts who easily fulfil the desires of an array of visitors from around the world. The tropical island hideaway of Samui however, has recently unveiled one of its most unique delights in this palatal pleasure empire, and it does not lie on the fairways of the pristine shores, but right under our noses along the Ring Road before you enter into Fisherman’s Village. Hidden within a lush oasis of a tropical garden and protected from the humdrum of everyday life by a majestic rampart of walls, a lily pond surrounded by captivating antiques centres the grounds. The restaurant building itself is a masterpiece of ancient Thai architecture combined with the modern amenities of our time. Complex wooden roofs adorn this classical kingdom with reminiscences of the designs of Ayutthaya, supported by a fortress of stone and ceiling high glass. Within this magnificent structure, we reveal a gem; Chef Stefano Leone.

The Stefano Dining Experience Chef Stefano opened the doors to Natura Cucina Essenziale on New Year’s Day, and has implemented a radically individual approach to dining for his guests. He brings to your table two different and yet combined elements to the menu design for his restaurant. Using nothing but the finest and freshest organically-grown ingredients for the dishes, he then extends a personal choice of wines to match his collection of culinary creations. “Basically this is Provencale cuisine with a Tuscan influence. What I call a more contemporary approach to classical cooking, featuring a lighter and cleaner fare achieved by reducing the sauces and eliminating the heavy aspect of each dish. This is where the name is derived, from the essence of natural cuisine.” The second element to Chef Stefano’s menu is where the truly unique aspect of his establishment sets him apart from the melody of conformity that wraps around this little island of food stops. The final portion of the menu displays his “Convivium Cuisine,” which lists the dish bases such as “Tuscan Fare” or “Provencale Fare.”

And this is where we witness the master at work. Chef Stefano will join you at your table, enjoy a glass of wine with you, and discuss the creation of your dish. He will give you options such as to decide on fish or meat, how you would like to have the meat prepared, and inquire as to what types of sauces you are familiar with or enjoy the most. From this information, in the tradition of a true Chef of the ages, he will leave you to make what you have requested. “My house is your house! There is no set menu here, and nothing is fixed. From starters to dessert you and I will design your meal together. Exactly the way you want it.” Chef Stefano has without doubt taken the dining experience to a whole new and individual level, redefining customer service and the pleasure of eating. There are no surprises, unless of course you request one, there are no boundaries between the kitchen and the Diner, and there is only one difficult decision to make while experiencing Natura Cucina Essenziale... Will you dine indoors, or within the garden area?

When you hear of the great musical success stories worldwide, the modest, down to earth people always come out as the favourites. Nakadia’s story is one such version. Fact is, her rise to fame has made Nakadia one of the most successful musicians in Thailand. She had no idea where life would lead her when in 2001, she met a photographer on the Internet by chance and was drawn to France to pursue a modelling career. During her excursion to Europe, the world of clubbing and the lure of the evolving dance floor music caught her attention first in Germany. In

ask me a lot about Thailand and I am happy that I have the chance to promote my country in that way, but people have to understand that the world is one big dance-floor. There are good DJs from every part of the world. You don’t need to be from the UK to be good, or to have good records. “ Having played the dance floors of the world, Nakadia has developed her art through different genres of electronic music, eventually choosing techno and tech-house as her platform. Through

performance at the FIFA world Cup final in 2006 and the Loveparade performances were all booked from being seen on the island of coconuts. Today we find Nakadia rushing from one meeting to the next on Koh Samui, making deals and signing contracts for the year to come. More music industry managers are on Samui than ever before, it seems, and this artist’s schedule is crammed with massive performances extending halfway through the year already. She just signed for her first Ibiza residency this year, and 12 colossal summer festivals across

“On my first trip to Europe my friend took me to a club and I saw a female DJ spin. I loved it so much and I knew from that moment that this is what I had to do. It was not a dream, but more like my destiny.” 2002, she took on the name DJ Nakadia and has never looked back since. She made a move to the tourist destination of Koh Samui in 2003 and made her debut at the Fusion Club in Lamai. Here she was granted a platform to gain experience, from which she sprung to stardom, receiving her first international booking in Seoul, South Korea. From there she went around the world. Her modesty and humble nature leaves most in disbelief when first encountering this playful artist, whose repertoire boasts over 400 events in more than 200 clubs in over 45 countries during the last 5 years. “I don’t feel like I am the only big Thai DJ,” admits Nakadia. “In Thailand, I am just one of many DJ’s and I don’t feel any different than them. Of course, in Europe at interviews, people always

her international experience of playing to different people every weekend, she has learned to read the crowd and reacts with them in perfect unity. Her musical and technical qualities behind the decks, compliment Nakadia’s vibrant personality and strong stage presence. It is just about impossible to name a turntable artist that can be compared to Nakadia. She is remembered by many as “The cute Thai girl who is simply a unique artist, truly respected by all those who witness her live on stage.” Samui has always been the prime destination for people of the DJ industry. Club owners, managers, booking agents and most DJs, enjoy wintering through January on Samui, and every one of them who saw Nakadia play booked her straight away. Interestingly enough, even the milestones of Nakadia’s career have been set on Samui: her

Europe have jumped to book Nakadia before she is signed elsewhere. But the most important goal for Nakadia in 2010 is to produce more records. Next to her busy schedule, she is planning to spend more days in the studio than in 2009. 4 releases are planned for this year and if she can make it all happen, she set to break through to the highest league of worldwide DJs this year. Only a few weeks per year Nakadia is playing her resident clubs in Thailand, including the famous “Fullmoon Party.” Most weekends she can be found at the top clubs around the globe. You can find Nakadia at MINT in Chaweng every Tuesday during February. For more dates, please check: www.nakadia.com

BAAN BANG RAK A Village of Prestige and Urban Grace

T

here’s something happening to the island of Koh Samui. An incredible reformation is occurring and is gaining such momentum that it has changed the face of one of its former sleepy little villages. Baan Bang Rak, or as some have come to know it, Big Buddha Beach, has been transformed from a typical Thai village into an area of prestige and urban grace.

Located between Big Buddha Pier and Petcherat Marina, Samui Pier Beach Front Resort has been urbanized by a joint venture between two South Africans, Itsik Bouhbot and Yaniv Nagar. The boutique bungalow resort reputes itself as a place where guests can relax in luxurious accommodations at affordable prices, with the most scenic sunset views on the island.

Bang Rak, the shorter version of its name, has become home to some of the most driven entrepreneurs, leaders of business, and tourism operators that have ever inhabited the island of Koh Samui. There has begun an eruption of rebuilding and rebirth that has taken what was once a classic village, and created a stunning example for neighbouring hamlets. Chosen by the Tesabaan Administration on Samui, Bang Rak has been updated with widened streets where cars can park without interfering with traffic flow, a cobbled walk-way has been installed for pedestrians to safely tour the businesses, and stunning lighting standards now stand erected with the mystical Kitebird adorning their crowns.

The first-rate and renowned skills of Oceans Elite Yacht Charters are aimed to create personal charters for their guests to enjoy. The Samui archipelago offers amazing cruising grounds both above and below the water, and these luxury charters offer endless opportunities to visit breath taking tropical islands, palm fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs alive with exotic marine life all from the shores of Bang Rak.

Created as a potential model street, the impressive changes have instilled a sense of pride and need for redevelopment for the facilities of this village by the owners of the community businesses. The entrepreneurs along this area have themselves begun to facilitate their own rebuilding, creating a contagious growth of magnificence through this village. The preservation of the old village character has been kept a priority, and as the name of Bang Rak translates into ‘The Village of Love’ in the Thai language, so has the charm been reserved that this village emanates. Khun Tuernjai Petcherat and business partner Mr. Dean Gilboa of Petcherat Marina are the largest speed boat tour company on the island. They offer a wide range of Tour and Marine services and operate high-powered speedboats that enable quick and speedy service to all the islands in the Samui Archipelago. Here the standards for excellence and the contemporary facilities allow guests to holiday in an atmosphere designed for modern luxury. The Marina also offers a wide selection of private speed boats and yachts from fun cruises to luxury all inclusive charters to all the paradise destinations.

Within the Village of Love, the devotion for impeccable dining experiences is not abandoned, and the cuisine available is indeed extraordinary. As you travel through the village, the aromatic creations of Stefano Giacomelli and his well-known Italian restaurant Antica Locanda, can be captured hundreds of metres away. Welcome Italy to Your Neighborhood! Bravo Pizza is the newest Italian addition to the growing area and is a casual sophisticated Italian cuisine restaurant and lounge bar that invites you to discover the sensational flavors of their seasonally inspired menu. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily, with extended hours on the weekend and sporting events. If you are searching for a place to host your next group function, look no further. Bravo is the perfect setting for your private or semi-private event. With a history of providing the resident community the best of Italy in Bang Rak, if not on the whole of Samui, any new visitor will surely consider taking up residency nearby. The tourist oriented village of Bang Rak has always had an all-inclusive magnetic draw for tourists and for local islanders alike. Rejuvenated and redefined, this once sleepy and quaint village has risen to the crème of the crop as an example of beautiful infrastructure and design. It is a ‘MUST VISIT’ on any tourist itinerary, and a village where ‘Living the Dream’ can become a reality.

Samui Jazz

Presents

Sidsel Storm Samui Jazz in association with Bangkok Airways and Hitman Jazz, are proud to kick off the Samui Jazz monthly concert series this year with ‘Sidsel Storm feature Trio’ on February 26th, at the stunning Kirikayan Luxury Pool Villas & Spa. Danish singer-songwriter Sidsel had her first brush with the world of jazz at the Den Rytmiske Højskole in Vig, Denmark. She began studying at the Musikalsk Grundkursus in Copenhagen in 2003; and in 2005, started the Sidsel Storm Quartet, which performing at jazz festivals across the country. Sidsel performed no less than seven times during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2007, and sang backing vocals with Malene Mortensen on the soccer song for the Homeless World Cup in 2007. She has played over 25 concerts during the past two years. Director of Amsiam Travel Co., Ltd , Mr. Santi stated, “In 2010 we plan that Samui Jazz will be scheduled monthly (ten series) in ten months. This is a perfect opportunity for both residents and tourists to come out for an evening of musical entertainment. We guarantee that this will be a fun and enjoyable evening for all and after a becoming a huge hit with fans, this year’s series of Samui Jazz will be the biggest to date.” For more information, please visit: www.samuijazz.com

I will do it myself! For Sidsel Storm, nothing can be coincidental. Here is a girl with strong confidence and a sense for beauty. This has in many ways influenced her career, which Sidsel must and shall control. It doesn’t matter if it is regarding artistically expression, composition, songwriting, album release, booking, press pictures or the form of the music - both performance wise and in the studio. This stubborn young woman has to make sure that things are done the right way, which leaves her very busy. ”Swedish Lullaby” is the perfect image of Sidsel’s independence and her eye for details. A complete opposite of her last album, where she composed a lot of the tunes herself, on this album Sidsel has been focusing on the lyrics and the beautiful Nordic tone, which elegantly has been working with the compositions of the well-known and respected Swedish jazz-composer Lars Jansson, as well as with the Danish pianist and composer Peter Otto.

From upcoming to well-known jazz singer Sidsel Storm went from upcoming to well-known jazz-star, when the reviewers with great response, received her previous album ”Sidsel Storm”, which was released in May 2008. Suddenly promoters were calling every hour of the day with gigs, instead of the other way around, and talented jazz musicians wanted to play with her. The album also received a Danish Music Award. Danish Jazz Vocal Release of the Year With the release of ”Swedish Lullaby”, Sidsel Storm takes it to the next level – she delves deep into the centre of her artistic expression and leads us through a personal album, where love has many sides. The many concerts in the last two years have developed Sidsel musically and added a confidence, which comes out as intensity as her overwhelming presence on the stage. Strong bonds towards Sweden Sidsel has spent every summer since she was a child in the Swedish, deserted farm owned by her family. Today she finds her inspiration from the calm and creative space to write her music in the same surroundings. This is also the reason why the album is recorded and mixed in Sweden. The famous Swedish jazz club FASCHING, has recently invited Sidsel to play at their venue for a spring tour, after warm recommendations from Denmark. A sparkle of pop and folk Sidsel grew up in a home where her father played traditional folk music, and who brought her with him on festivals and gigs. Therefore it has been natural for her to include the instruments of traditional folk music (harmonica, cello, and fiddle), which has given her own music a special sound, expression, and a twist between the traditional instruments and the airy pop, sewn together with deep and poetic lyrics. KIDS & ROCKS

It was on December the 10th that Samui saw the arrival of 31 children from the Mercy Centre, for the 6th Annual Kid’s Weekend. IPP Philip, Wally and Adèle travelled to Donsak to greet the 3 minibuses carrying children aged between 3 and 18. They arrived just in time to catch the 9am ferry, and were soon on their way to Koh Samui.

The next four days were a whirl of activity, as the children divided their time between the Resort’s swimming pool, and visiting tourist venues such as Namuang Safari Park. They also delighted in a sports day, where the younger and older children alike competed in events such as 3-legged races and musical chairs.

They were then greeted at the idyllic setting of Baan Taling Ngam Resort by GM Nigel Tovey and his staff, alongside Father Joe Meir and Khun Ratana who had flown down ahead of their children. The children were shown to their rooms, but were soon ready for a splendid lunch provided by Beach Republic.

But the highlight of the afternoon was a visit by the ‘Samui Pirates’ who brought their high powered motorbikes for the children to sit on, and then take a ride in the safe area round the resort. Finally, on Sunday the 13th, children from Panyadee School came to join the Mercy Centre children, and presented them with Christmas gifts that they had donated themselves. Then, assembled Rotarians, Baan Taling Ngam Staff, Panyadee staff, the children and many Friends of Rotary, sadly waved the children goodbye as they left for the long journey back to Bangkok.

The island of Samui gave these tiny visitors the best that they could in every aspect. Apart from breakfast courtesy of Baan Taling Ngam, the children were provided meals by a variety of top resorts.

The Respirator Project The Rotary Club of Koh Samui.

Finally, a second Respirator unit has been delivered to the local Nathon Hospital. The only breather device the hospital could rely on, before our action, was in use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by a young boy paralyzed from the neck, but mentally very alert. In the case where any other patient had a respiratory deficit, they would have risked suffocation, since the main unit cannot be disconnected from the young boy who has been using it continuously since he born. The Rotary Club of Koh Samui was delighted to celebrate the successful completion of their Samui Nathon Hospital Project on Sunday, December 20th with a presentation at The Hospital. The Project commenced at the beginning of the Presidency of Philip Parker in July 2008, and was carried forward to completion by current President Claudio Cerquetti. Urgently needed medical equipment was donated to the value of more than three quarters of a million baht. Included were a complete Life Support Respirator System, which in addition to static bedside use can also be operated by batteries for transportation purposes, which fits the specific need of The Hospital, and two Oximeters. Following an illustrated introduction by Deputy Hospital Director, Dr. Jirawan Arrayapong, President Claudio welcomed the Guests who included two of The Club’s major sponsors - Eric Tarleton and Dr. Peter Tschudi, from The Rotary Club of Uetliberg in Switzerland. I would like to extend my humble gratitude to all of the generous efforts of the friends of the Rotary Club of Koh Samui, as well as to all of the Rotarians involved in the project. On behalf of those whose lives you will help to save...Thank you so much! Claudio Cerquetti President of ROCKS

Creative Introduction Isabelle Robyns Designs Isabelle Robyns is extending her imagination. Isabelle Robyns (Isa) recently held a gathering to display her newest trends and fashions that she has created for 2010. Isa set up shop on Samui over 3 years ago, and her intentions have proved to be nothing less than establishing her vision for creativity. With a personal history that is impressive to say the least, this Fashion Designer turned Interior Designer has brought a breath of fresh air to the island of tranquillity. Hailing originally from Belgium, Isa was recognised at the youthful age of 22 to be one of the top designers in Milan’s fashion industry, working with a number of reputable designers in creating her own collection of business, casual, evening and spectacular wedding wear for the European nations. With an articulate vision for creativity, Isa has recently opened her newest Design Concept Studio in Maenam, and through her storybook storefront windows you can witness this master at work. “It’s all about the details.” The impression that her studio casts out into the streets of Samui summarizes her diligence in giving her clients exactly what they are looking for; Fashion On You... and Your Furniture. When you enter Isabelle Robyns Design Studio in Maenam, you are met with an open concept office and an uplifting feel. It expresses her philosophies admirably: to enhance one’s natural and inner beauty, maintaining the ambiance of fashion, and total commitment to the client.

It is little surprise to find that Isa herself is personable, a great conversationalist, and an optimist: qualities that have seen her business rise quickly within Samuian circles. Isa’s, studio, simply called ‘Isa’ is the reflection of a businesswoman who has been able to combine her talents in clothing and fashion design , furniture design, and accessory planning into a single and growing enterprise. My name is Ricco, and unlike a lot of the other dogs here I had an owner. When she died her family sent my brother and I to the DRCS. My brother died of a broken heart, but I am hoping that by giving me a home, someone can let me live again.

sunday meditation programs sponsored Meditation is an activity for those who seek true tranquility and happiness. In the peaceful forest hills above Koh Samui, there is a special place called Dipabhavan. Dipabhavan is a sanctuary built by Pra Ajarn Pho , current abbot of Wat Suan Mohk in Chiya District. His goal was to join with the residents of Samui and help bring happiness to all who visit his sanctuary. His hope is to educate visitors to the site to true Lord Buddha’s teaching in the way of Pra Bhuddhadasa Bhiku. Every Sunday, Dipabhavan will hold a special meditation program for everyone. Mr. Tossapol Satitwittayakul and his wife, founders of the Tossawas Charity Fund and owners of The Passage Samui donated 16,000 THB to support students who join this program from December 2009 to March 2010. The Passage Samui donate $1 for every guest night spent in their resort - in the hope that their guests may share in the good karma from this charity work. For information visit: www.dipabhavan.com

HOROSCOPE M ystic PEG HAS TRAVELLED THE GLOBE OVER THE PAST 80 YEARS, SEARCHING FOR WISDOM, TRAINING WITH ZEN MASTERS, AND AVOIDING ALIEN ABDUCTION. TODAY SHE COLLECTS HER THOUGHTS AND FOCUSES ON GIVING YOU A DIRECT AND MEANINGFUL OUTLOOK ON YOUR LIFE AND WHAT SHE KNOWS ABOUT PEOPLE WHO LOOK TO THE STARS FOR ANSWERS ABOUT THEIR LIVES.

FUTURE INQUIRES CAN BE MADE TO: glenn@siammap.COM

Aries: March 21 - April 19

A horoscope will affect your decisions this month as love will strike your heart and make you ask someone out, someone you would never previously have had the heart do ask out. They’ll still deny you your wishes but they may have an ugly step-brother who they reckon needs a “good seeing to”. Each person you tell “I love you!” this month, will think that you’ve lost it.

Taurus: April 20 - May 20

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21

Crying over spilt milk may seem like a folly, but perhaps not if you’ve spilt piping hot milk over your naked body. Don’t be embarrassed by your actions today, embrace your flamboyant side. You will get an important phone call this month , but you won’t be able to find a pen to write down the message. Wake up in a trashcan again? Don’t let your drinking get you down, have a beer.

Gemini: May 21 - June 20

As the fella once said, “Ain’t that a kick in the head.” Not that you’ll be kicked in the head, it’s a metaphor. I mean, hell, for all I know you are going to get kicked in the head, so maybe just wear a helmet for the rest of the month. Nutrition will play a major part of your life for the next weeks. Test yourself this month by walking around semi-nude.

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21

Love will come your way if you let it. If you don’t it’ll hit you over the head and run away really fast. “Hunky-dory” - a beautiful phrase that will sum up the day, week and month for you. You see, it’s just going to be tip-top from here-on-in, and the smile on your face is going to bug the living hell out of everyone.

To love is to show someone how ridiculous you can be when you let your guard down. Some people find that attractive. Some people think you’re a lush who’s too damned easy. While we are not all superhuman, some of us are at least able to go to sleep without pissing ourselves in the night. Brown is your unlucky colour for the month. Avoid it where ever possible.

Cancer: June 21 - July 22

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19

Leo: July 23 - August 22

Aquarius: January 20 - February 18

Virgo: August 23 - September 22

Pisces: February 19 - March 20

People older than you often ask your opinion because you are a trendsetter and a marvellous role model for society in general. Sasquatch will not befriend you and live peacefully in your house. Paper can cut, and words can hurt, which is why you should burn any mail that comes through the letterbox - preferably while still in the postman/woman’s hands.

Putty may be an important object for you this month, as will a ball of string and a small ball-peen hammer. The odds are that you’ll see something that you physically and desperately desire. However, it is similarly likely that you will fall flat on your arse trying to achieve it. Old wives tales aren’t smutty recollections of sexual conquests.

Love is like a sea full of sea turtles. Or at least, it should be. If you’ve not experienced this then it’s time to either look elsewhere or just look harder! Your marital status may change this month, either due to some pre-planned marriage type thing, or possibly just a typing error on a car insurance quote form. Either way, love is on the cards for you.

Libra: September 23 - October 22

Spank. It’s a word that will not only recur surprisingly often this month, but will also make you pray for better, more simple times. When there’s work to be done, there’s no shame in procrastination. Any beer consumed tonight may come back to haunt you. The way that aliens think is none of your business.

Life can be as romantic as you wish to make it. Tensions could rise over coming days when someone close to you opens your mail and then puts it in a drawer without telling you. This will irritate you and cause you to act increasingly petty, culminating in the setting up of webcams in your downstairs loo, which feeds directly into “watchmypartnerpoop.com”

The light is coming closer and soon you will see exactly what the future holds with a special someone. The light is a little bit blinding though, so you might want to duck out of the way when it gets within touching distance, or possibly even turn around. But don’t turn around for too long or the light will be gone. We think it’s a light. I’ve discussed it with a few other astrologers and it’s either a light or a brick.

“Every day is a winding road,” they say. This is especially true when you find your love walking down a winding road with you. Initially they’ll be way ahead in front, but with your power-house thighs you’ll soon catch up and start the most magical conversation you’ve ever had. The future holds great peril for a masked magician in your area. Please let him know.
