Letter from

the Head of School

This cannot be a team of common men. You have to be uncommon. – Coach Herb Brooks, Hockey Coach, 1980 Olympic Gold Medal Winning Team USA

Dear Academy Community, Academy Boys are uncommon young men. As they journey through their time at our school, an Academy Boy becomes a scholar, a leader, a young man of integrity, and a brother on whom others can rely. Every Academy Boy comes to understand that the undeterred pursuit of these qualities is uncommon. In an environment intentionally crafted for boys, and with the lessons taught at The Academy and reinforced at home, our Academy Boy recognizes that fulfilling his unique and noble purpose requires numerous skills. Among those are collaboration, teamwork, empathy, a growth mindset, curiosity, kindness, honesty, taking personal responsibility, and a devotion to doing and being his best. It is the exceptional education that he receives that makes The Academy Boy uncommon. It is the buddy program and caring for those “little guys” at lunch that helps The Academy Boy learn and aspire to our uncommon and exceptional leadership and brotherhood. It is the challenging academic program that offers opportunities for public displays of understanding, like our Kindergarten Zootopia performance, our 3rd grade Day at the Museum presentation, or our annual 8th Grade Shakespeare Play, which are the foundation of The Academy Boy’s exceptional and uncommon scholarship. And, finally, it is the devotion to living into and up to our Academy motto: Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.® Our motto guides and sustains us as we go about our lives here at The Academy and beyond. Uncommon men are not born; they are challenged, they are guided, they are mentored, they are coached, and they are taught what it means and what it takes to become uncommon. It takes a place that offers an exceptional education intentionally crafted for boys to nurture and shape the uncommon man. It requires a dedication to educating boys for life and preparing each young man to fulfill his noble purpose to plant and cultivate the seeds of the “uncommon.” It was our school’s founder, Dr. W. B. Seeley, who first hoped that The Academy would produce uncommon young men known for their scholarship, leadership and integrity. With the addition of brotherhood, these four pillars are now the cornerstones of an exceptional education that leads to the development of uncommon young men. When encountered on the streets of San Antonio, these uncommon young men are simply known as Academy Boys. This report celebrates our Academy Boys and the many families, friends, faculty and staff, and community supporters dedicated to ensuring their success and the success of San Antonio Academy for generations to come. For this, we thank you. Blessings,

Paul M. Quick, Head of School 2022-2023 1

StudentSPOTLIGHT Lee Brockwell 2022-23 Battalion Commander

Years at The Academy

Lee is an Academy “Lifer” – he was with us for all 10 years, Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.

High School

Lee has gone on to attend Alamo Heights High School after graduating from The Academy.

Awards & Accomplishments

Battalion Commander, football team captain, basketball team captain, baseball, Peacock Medal, 8th Grade Confirmation, 8th Grade Championship Debate member, Best Overall Actor in ‘The Tempest,’ Little League Champion, McCallie CLC camp (Character, Leadership, Community)

How do you think you have grown in the role of Battalion Commander? I feel as if I am more confident in my ability to change people’s thoughts and actions in a positive way.

What is your desired college/career path? I hope to continue the same work effort in the classroom with straight A’s and be successful on the sports teams that I choose to be on. I also hope that I will get into the college of my choice when the time comes.

Who at SAA has had the most impact on your life?

Coach McNeil has given me multiple pieces of advice that I will carry with me as I continue along my path. Mr. Moore has challenged me enough to show some talents that I didn’t even know that I had. Coach Heineman put his faith in me when I didn’t have it in myself.

What piece of advice do you have for current SAA boys?

Don’t stop working when you think you have achieved something because you can always keep working to be something even greater than you think you are.

Class of 2019 Being the Best They Can Be!

SAA’s Class of 2019 has graduated from high school! On May 11, they joined us on campus to reconnect with each other and former Academy teachers. During this time, 8th grade English and Literature Teacher, Mr. Brendan Moore, was there to pass out letters the boys wrote to themselves during their 8th-grade year about their time at SAA and what they thought their life would be like when they graduated from high school.

Invest in our Boys. Create the Exceptional.

Give to The Academy Fund.

When an Academy Boy steps onto campus, his education will stretch beyond a core curriculum. He will start each day with chapel, where what it means to be honest, to be kind, and to be the best he can be will become indelible. He will go to his classroom with the most talented, brightest teachers who will teach in a way that is intentionally crafted for boys. His day will include a family-style lunch, little buddy and big buddy moments, and teamwork. He might bait a hook, compete in a sport, or memorize lines for a Shakespeare play. He will try things he didn’t know he could do and unearth talents he didn’t know existed. He will recognize when to follow and when to lead and realize the importance of his impact within and outside the Academy gates. As he crosses the stage at commencement, we will be drawn to the exceptional promise radiating from him. He will know how to embrace challenges and persevere. He will understand that his mistakes create valuable lessons. He will set goals and make plans to achieve them. He will have discovered some of his innate gifts and will have begun to understand how they benefit others. He will have become a scholar, a leader, a young man of integrity, and a brother on whom others can rely; in short, he will have become an Academy Boy.

Linda Gielen, 25 Years of Service, Technology Facilitator During her tenure at The Academy, Linda Gielen served as an invaluable member of our business office, library, and technology teams. Her nurturing guidance, expertise, and steadfast support, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID era, ensured The Academy’s smooth operations and technological resilience. Whether taking the time to teach a new skill, offering feedback on a project, or simply being a sounding board for ideas, Linda has always been there for us. “Throughout these years, I have had the privilege of working with an exceptional group of teachers and administrators who have dedicated their lives to shaping the minds and futures of our boys. The bonds we have forged, the challenges we have overcome, and the triumphs we have celebrated together have created a tapestry of experiences that will forever be etched in my heart.” Yulanee McKnight, 22 Years of Service, Summer Program Registrar We bid a fond farewell to Yulanee McKnight, as she closed a two decades-long Academy career. 37th Annual Fall Fair: the Greatest School on Earth!

g n i at Celebr

On Saturday, October 15, 2022, the San Antonio Academy community came together for an evening filled with laughter, excitement, and cherished memories at our 37th Annual Fall Fair. This beloved event, which was started by Marion Jeffers and Suzanne Armstrong in 1986 to celebrate The Academy’s 100th year, is a true testament to our familylike atmosphere, bringing students, parents, grandparents, alumni, staff, and friends closer than ever. This year’s theme, “The Circus is in Town,” brought more than 1,000 attendees of all ages to enjoy the festivities, which included more bounce houses than ever before, a haunted school bus, a cake walk, drop-in-the-bucket, food and drinks, and games galore! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors, committee members, booth volunteers, faculty, and staff who made this event possible. Special thanks go to our event co-chairs, Amy Berg and Mallory Ahl, whose tireless efforts ensured the 37th Annual Fall Fair was a resounding success. Overall, the event raised more than $60,000 in support of SAA’s programs.

Almost $500,000

Raised with SAA Soirée:

A “ n Evening Under the Oak” San Antonio Academy smashed school fundraising goals with the SAA Soirée: “An Evening Under the Oak” held Thursday, March 23, at The Academy. Co-Chaired by Emily Connally and Lauren Saunders, this reimagined spring fundraiser brought together current and alumni families, faculty and staff, and other supporters for an evening of good food, good company, and good entertainment, all for the good of the school. Set under The Academy’s iconic oak tree with banquet-style tables lining Frost Field and twinkle lights overhead, nearly 300 guests united in support of the event. Libations flowed as guests eyed class projects in the silent auction and registered for Sign & Go Parties, special-themed get-togethers hosted by SAA families, with all sales benefiting the school. Emceeing the event was Robert “Rick” Shaw, a current Academy grandparent who also had two sons attend the school in the 90s. Auctioneer Scotty Gibbs, the husband of Academy Middle School Spanish Teacher Dana Gibbs, launched a pulse-pounding live auction that included several luxurious vacation packages; the ultimate rodeo experience with the opportunity to shadow San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo veterinarian Dr. Ben Espy; Shania Twain suite

tickets for 16; and an adorable Jack Russell Terrier puppy named “Bud.”

One of the highlights of the evening was a video featuring San Antonio Academy students and what they love about their school. The video concluded with “thank you” messages to their parents for sending them to The Academy. With an after-party featuring dueling piano players, another level of excitement was added to the evening, allowing VIP ticket-holders to sing and dance the night away. “An Evening Under the Oak” raised more than $200,000 in “Paddles Up” donations, which fund a specific need of the school each year. This year’s efforts went towards new turf for SAA’s Frost Field, which, after enduring nearly a decade of wear and tear, was ready to be replaced. All other funds raised went towards ensuring that The Academy can continue to provide programs of excellence, a safe and secure environment, unparalleled benefits for faculty and staff, and first-class facilities. Overall, An Evening Under the Oak guests left inspired to give at record-breaking amounts, with the event raising almost $500,000 for San Antonio Academy.

Paddles The SAA community responded with an abundance of generosity to the Paddles Up donation appeal at the SAA Soirée. Paddles Up, along with the generous contribution from current SAA family, Ashley and Rad Weaver, funded the much-needed turf replacement of Frost Field. Following a brief renovation process, the field reopened for play at the end of August, and the boys are loving the fresh, new turf. This next generation of field technology offers improved shock absorbency, reduced field temperature, enhanced athletic performance, and greater safety. It’s perfect for athletics and recess and will provide a vibrant backdrop for parades. A huge thank you to the Academy community for making this possible!

More Than $100,000 Raised to Support Exceptional Experiences for Academy Boys As part of The Academy’s alumni annual giving campaign, the first-ever Alumni Giving Day was held on April 11, 2023. During this 24-hour event, generations of alumni came together to raise funds in support of the school. To further encourage their brothers to join in the cause, a generous alumnus matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000, for every gift made by a fellow Academy alumnus. It is with immense pride and joy that we announce, thanks to our alumni’s loyal support, we not only met but exceeded our alumni giving goal, raising an astounding $100,423! These contributions are a true testament to the enduring spirit of The Academy brotherhood. Funds raised have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of our students, allowing the school to continue delivering our mission to provide an exceptional education intentionally crafted for boys. Alumni donors are listed with their class year within The Academy Fund donor list (page 14). 26 San Antonio Academy Annual Report

Alumni Awards: During the annual Gather Under the Oak Tree event held on May 25, 2023, the San Antonio Academy Alumni Association presented awards to two alumni for their outstanding achievements and contributions to our society.

2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award: Rick Hagemeister, MD, Class of 1960 Since 2007, the SAA Alumni Association has honored outstanding graduates through the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Recipients of this prestigious award embody the core values, traditions, and ideals of The Academy. One such distinguished alumnus is Dr. Rick Hagemeister, an accomplished physician who embarked on a remarkable journey following his Academy graduation. Dr. Hagemeister’s educational path led him to Stanford University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry, and later, to UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, where he obtained his medical degree. His career included a residency in medicine at Charity Hospital in Louisiana, service in the U.S. Air Force, and a Fellowship in Cancer Medicine at MD Anderson. Within the Department of Hematology, he focused on clinical care, educating fellows, nurses, and other trainees, as well as enrolling patients in clinical trials. His primary area of expertise was the management of Hodgkin’s and aggressive lymphomas, and his significant contributions to clinical trials and over 200 published manuscripts earned him recognition from esteemed organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Best Doctors in America. As he celebrated his 60-year SAA reunion, Dr. Hagemeister noted that “a good education from the very beginning for everyone is key to our success as a society and nation” and “the keys to happiness are found in helping others and learning something new every day.”

2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award: Matthew Myers, JD, Class of 2003 Established in 2022, the Young Alumnus Award shines a spotlight on extraordinary alumni aged 35 and under, recognizing them as rising stars who exemplify the core principles of San Antonio Academy graduates: scholarship, leadership, integrity, and brotherhood. One such exemplary recipient of this award is Mr. Matthew Myers, an alumnus who has pursued academic and professional excellence. He achieved magna cum laude status while earning his bachelor’s degree in economics and Spanish from Austin College. Later, he obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Baylor Law School, where he stood out as the first graduate of its Leadership Development program and earned the distinction of Public Interest Fellow. Residing in San Antonio, Mr. Myers has become a prominent figure in the field of inbound U.S. and outbound global immigration law, particularly in employment

Building Connection:

Parent Involvement

at SAA

For parents at San Antonio Academy, volunteering on campus goes beyond just contributing their time. It’s a gateway to forming deep connections and friendships that extend well beyond their children’s time at the school. Once parents enroll their children at The Academy, they quickly realize the value of being actively engaged in the school community. As a Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade school, parents have the unique opportunity to forge lasting friendships with the same families throughout their children’s academic journey. San Antonio Academy offers a diverse array of avenues for parents to get involved on campus. Whether it’s volunteering at taco, snack, or concession sales, taking on roles in fundraising events, participating in Father/Son Bible studies, or serving as class representatives, there’s no shortage of opportunities for parents to make a meaningful impact. Social events play a vital role in fostering connections as well. Events like the Back-to-School Bash, Fall Family Fair, SAA Soirée, and Sign & Go Parties all provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere for parents to meet, mingle, and enjoy fellowship. Attending on-campus performances, morning chapel, school lunches, and athletic games not only supports the students but also provides parents with valuable opportunities to become familiar with the school and its culture. At San Antonio Academy, parent involvement is more than just lending a helping hand. It’s about building friendships, embracing the Bond of Brothers, and creating a tight-knit community that extends beyond the school years. By actively engaging in the various opportunities offered by The Academy, parents forge lasting connections, contribute to their children’s education, and create cherished memories that will endure for years to come.
