Shades of Green Makes Major Commitment to Stay Green Forever

When Shades of Green Nursery co-owners Bob Webster and Roberta Churchin launched their business on Mother’s Day in 1981, they wanted to create a unique, organic nursery in a beautiful urban oasis. At the time, their neighborhood along West Sunset Rd. featured a hodgepodge of small wood-framed cottages and just a few office buildings.

Wow, have things changed.

Today, West Sunset, between Broadway and the railroad tracks, has been dramatically transformed. Most of the cottages are long gone, replaced by a variety of medical buildings and practices offering everything from plastic surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, cardiology, senior health care, pediatric dental care, and more. In addition, the stretch of road includes a relatively new car wash, Home Depot, a Mexican restaurant, and a dog boarding and grooming facility.

The only “green space” left on West Sunset is Shades of Green’s nearly two acres of land.

“It would break my heart to see the trees destroyed and the property turned into an apartment complex or such,” co-owner Roberta Churchin told me. Bob Webster echoed her thoughts. And that’s why Webster and Churchin are putting the property into a conservation easement. It will protect the site forever. They will still own the property, but the easement will ensure that the land must stay as it is. A sacred green space amid urban disorder. In short, Webster says, “It will always be a haven, a refuge, and a place for peace and quiet.”

The two have created “The Shades of Green Legacy Foundation,” a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization. Webster explained, “The nonprofit will enable us to raise tax-exempt dollars from donors to provide funds to help maintain the property as a public space, a living classroom for school kids, and a refuge for people to come to escape the stresses of their daily lives.”

Over the past several years, Webster and Churchin have visited unique gardens across the country to identify some of the characteristics they’d like to put into place at Shades of Green.

They were especially impressed by a space they saw in Carbondale, Colorado, the True Nature Healing Arts garden. It describes itself as a

peaceful sanctuary, free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. The therapeutic environment incorporates several healing features, including a labyrinth, reflexology path, outdoor yoga space, and contemplative gardens. Webster and Churchin hope to incorporate some of those features into Shades of Green.

Webster said the transition is a few years down the road as they consider detailed plans for the sanctuary. He said they’d welcome input from anyone and everyone who has thoughts on what they’d like Shades of Green to become. For more information on the nursery, stop by 334 West Sunset, 78209, or visit www.shadesofgreensa.com

AH Fire Department Earns Top Honor

The Alamo Heights Fire Department was recently recognized by a prestigious national organization for outstanding service to the community.

Hugh Gibson, Manager, ISO Community Mitigation Hazard, presented the award at the Alamo Heights City Council meeting on July 24. The Fire Department achieved an ISO-1 classification as an exemplary fire suppression program. The designation includes an evaluation of communications infrastructure, fire mitigation geographics, the ability of the department to launch an effective initial attack on first alarm, water supply, and community risk reduction.

The department joins the elite classification of

ISO #1, with approximately 90 other departments in the state, out of 2855, and 474 out of 38,492 nationwide.

The ISO fire rating identifies the capabilities of a local fire department. There may be benefits to home and commercial property owners with potentially lower property insurance rates.

AH Fire Chief Michael Gdovin thanked the firefighters, Dispatcher Supervisor Colleen Ferruzzi, Public Works Director Pat Sullivan, Utilities Superintendent Mark McGinnis, and Community Development Services Department Director Lety Hernandez for their dedication to public safety.

Balloon Fun and Artistry Opens in 78209

Alamo Balloons recently opened its new location at 5216 Broadway St., in Acadia Place. The store formerly housed the old vitamin store.

Michelle Rowe, the shop owner, is a former Air Force flight nurse. She retired in 2015.

What is it about balloons that attracted Michelle’s interest? She told me, “As a kid, I loved balloons. And while in the Air Force, I literally traveled the world and saw how popular balloons are in many parts of South and Central America and Mexico, too. The beauty of balloons is the immediate gratification we get when we decorate with them.”

Michelle says she has been blowing up balloons for over 17 years. In her new shop, shoppers can find almost any theme balloon they are looking for, from Birthdays, Get Well, Sports, Unicorns, Mermaids, and much, much more! Alamo Balloons offers pick-up service, delivery, and custom decor. Need a backdrop? They’ve got that too! For more information on Alamo Balloons, visit the website at Alamoballoons.com or call 210-853-2256.

Dutch Bros. Coffee In 78209

Anyone driving north or south on Broadway, between Greenbrier and Flamingo, will have noticed new construction next to Taqueira Vallarta, at 8222 Broadway.

The site, which formerly housed Sigoloff Frame & Art, will soon be home to Dutch Bros Coffee, an Oregon-based drive-through/dine-in coffee shop. The firm began as a push-cart in 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon. As of August 2023, the company says it had nearly 900 locations nationwide.

Dutch Bros opened its first store in San Antonio in 2021. It now has more than 25 locations across

the city, which, according to data company ScrapeHero, means the Alamo City has more Dutch Bros Coffee locations than any other city in the U.S.

The Broadway store is expected to open soon. Hours reportedly will be similar to other locations in San Antonio – open at 5 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights. The menu features coffees, lemonade, and many other drinks. Plus, the stores offer some sweets and muffins. For everything you may want to know about Dutch Bros, check go to www. dutchbros.com.

Dogtopia Comes to Broadway

Doggy daycare, boarding, and spa services are now available at a new business in 78209 at 3814 Broadway.

The firm is called Dogtopia, and they have four locations in San Antonio. The 78209 spot is their newest, and it is the only one open seven days a week. Unlike most other doggie daycare and boarding facilities in the area, Dogtopia houses fur babies indoors only. And, with the heat San Antonio has been experiencing, indoors and air-conditioned is a welcome environment.

On its website, Dogtopia writes, “Dogtopia is the leading destination for dog daycare, boarding, and spa services. Our mission is to make sure your four-legged family members are kept safe and have a fun time when they are at our modern, open-play facility.

“We understand that your dog is a member of the family. You want to provide your dog with safe socialization so that they meet and play with like-minded friends, exercise to keep them healthy, and extend their lives and education to help ensure they are well-behaved both at home and when you take them out in public.

“Dogtopia’s daycare is designed with these needs in mind. Your dog’s safety is our top priority; that’s why our team’s training is certified by two nationally recognized associations in canine behavior. Our playrooms are supervised by these certified Canine Coaches, and your dog will be in a playroom where he or she is surrounded by dogs of similar size, temperament, and play style, as well as those who are fully vaccinated and have passed our Dogtopia evaluation.”

Squeeze Massage

SQUEEZE MASSAGE

New Local Business Using Technology for a 21st-Century Massage Experience

A small business owner is bringing the feel-good revolution to you. Squeeze is the new massage shop operated by Nicole Wilson. It’s located at the high-visibility intersection of Broadway and Sunset. With ties to the successful Drybar, Nicole says Squeeze is not your “mom’s 1990s massage studio.” An important part of the business model is giving customers more control of their massage experience.

“The Squeeze founders were looking to modernize the outdated concept of membership-based massage. So, everything for us is done through our app,” Nicole said. “You book and cancel appointments, sign up for your membership, select your therapist, and even tip and rate through the app and more. You don’t have to call or come in. Everything is right at your fingertips.”

With the Squeeze app, customers also get to set their massage preferences before they arrive for their appointment. For example, they can select the amount of pressure to apply, areas for the massage therapist to focus on or avoid, and more. At Squeeze, the extras don’t cost extra.

“Many spas kind of upsell clients on different levels of service like aromatherapy, deep tissue, heat therapy, percussion therapy, etc., but at Squeeze, all of those massage services are included,” said Nicole.

During the massage session, if you want something more personalized than the typical dim lights and new-age music, Squeeze lets you set the scene.

“In the room, you control everything, which is unique,” Nicole added. “You set your playlist from a panel on the wall, you set your lighting, you set the heat on the table, you’re in control of all of that.”

Another customer control feature is the Ready button to notify the therapist when to re-enter the room.

Squeeze held its grand opening on July 14, 2023, and is steadily attracting customers. Right now, there are six Squeeze locations across the nation, with another 75 or more already planned, according to Nicole. Her 78209 location is the first in Texas.

Nicole’s transition into entrepreneurship came after eight years at USAA. The Squeeze concept and support gave Nicole confidence she could succeed at being a small business owner. Entrepreneurship is also in the family’s DNA. Her husband, Dr. Bart Wilson, owns Mission Orthodontics. The Wilsons rezoned a residential lot at Broadway and Sunset and built the new location for Mission Orthodontics. Squeeze occupies the first floor of the building.

“We’re essentially our own Billboard,” Nicole said. “Our part of the building is painted Squeeze blue. It’s easy to see ‘Pat,’ our smiley Squeeze mascot. We’re proud of how our building looks to promote our business.”

Nicole finds great value in taking a grassroots approach to spreading the word in our community. She partners with local businesses to give massages at various events and talk about the Squeeze difference.

“Being in Alamo Heights is amazing. I’m getting to bring something new and modern to 78209, and it’s been a lot of fun,” said Nicole. “I also spend a lot of time collaborating with other businesses. I feel like every business owner in Alamo Heights has been supportive and very eager to partner to help us get off the ground.”

Nicole brings ambition and a hard work ethic to Squeeze. At age 14, she started working for McDonald’s in her hometown of Hodgenville, Kentucky, to save money to buy a car. After high school graduation, she joined the Army, serving our country for 11 years. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Thomas Edison University while on active duty and then her Master of Business Administration from UTSA while working at USAA full-time.

On top of operating a startup business, Nicole is a busy mother of three children, ages 15, 8, and 5. For ‘me’ time, Nicole enjoys volunteering at her children’s schools and running. And, of course, enjoys an occasional massage - one of the perks of owning Squeeze.

Angel Santiago and Vanessa Sanchez

An Unexpected Connection Brings Two 78209 Neighbors Together for a Future Life Together

Angel Santiago and Vanessa Sanchez are long-time 78209 residents and may have crossed paths at a school event or the grocery store but never noticed. That changed when Angel’s daughter, Anjéa, invited her friend, Vanessa’s daughter, Roslyn, to Austin for Comic Con, a pop culture convention that brings in talent from the world of comics, movies, and TV. Roslyn told her mom that Anjéa’s father would drive them to Austin. Being a protective mother, Vanessa wasn’t comfortable with that idea.

“I was like, oh, no. This is not happening. I’m sorry. You’re not going by yourself. If you want to go, I’m going with you,” Vanessa said.

Both sides planned to meet at a gas station to follow each other to Austin. Vanessa had a change of heart after she met Angel.

“We just saw each other, and there was definitely something between us,” Angel said. “After talking for a few minutes, I told her why take two cars? Let’s just ride together. Something told her it was okay to do this,” said Angel.

There’s something about a road trip that compels people to bare their souls. Similar life experiences and values were part of that conversation. What really resonated was their similar paths toward spiritual enlightenment and personal growth.

“As I listened to Angel, I thought, how are you on the same journey as me?” Vanessa said. “I wasn’t looking to date anybody. Then, out of nowhere, I had never been more comfortable with anybody in my life.”

Soon after Comic Con, they went on their first date. They kept it simple and met for coffee. As with a road trip, chatting over a cup of java gives people time to learn more about each other. They talked more about each other’s family, personal interests, and careers.

Angel specializes in life and spiritual coaching. He also works with professionals and business owners to develop their leadership skills. His expertise in this area was honed as a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. Angel also writes on leadership for 78209 Magazine, where he interviews local business owners for insight into their leadership styles.

“Leadership is not about position. Leadership is not about title. Leadership is not about a team. It’s about how you are leading yourself,” said Angel. “The better you can lead yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, the better you show up for yourself, the better you show up for your family, the better you show up for your community.”

Vanessa is a licensed massage therapist. She has two related business operations. She rents studio space for traditional massages and operates

a chair massage business in a luxury auto dealership. Her commitment to mind and body includes being a certified yoga instructor. Vanessa also shares her faith and study of the Bible as a volunteer at her church. There, she provides biblical care counseling for people open to spiritual guidance.

Vanessa and Angel have been ‘09ers for more than nine years now. They love the small-town feel and walking to shops and restaurants. One of their favorite activities is visiting our local coffee shops. Dining out is also a shared interest with Asian Fusion tops on their culinary tastes.

Another aspect of 78209 they appreciate is the Alamo Heights I.S.D. schools. Their daughters, Anjéa and Roslyn, are freshmen at Alamo Heights High School. Anjéa is in the marching band’s drum line. Roslyn is a member of the Spanish Club and Cosmetology Club. Both parents say the school district delivers an excellent educational experience.

“They offer so much with the curriculum and activities,” Vanessa said. “Parents with children at other school districts tell me they can’t believe my daughter is taking yoga and a clothing design class. These are classes other kids don’t have an option to take.”

More than two and a half years since their shared ride to Austin, Angel and Vanessa are now engaged. They’re targeting November 2024 for the wedding. Their daughters and a comic convention created the introduction. Their strong faith established the bond. Together, Angel and Vanessa are committed to contributing to our community through their passions and strengths and frequenting 78209 coffee shops.

The AHHS team is in elite company- only 3 of 8 schools made it to White Sands this year. Only 2 of those teams achieved successful launches.

Students named this year’s rocket “The Godfather.” The finished sleek design represents thousands of hours of work designing, building and problem-solving with this talented group, all of them now AHHS graduates.

Congratulations to this incredible team and their incredible instructor, Colin Lang!

Referral Based Veterinary Specialty Care Now Available in San Antonio

San Antonio Veterinary Specialists (SAVS) opened in September 2023 and offers leading-edge diagnostics and treatments for dogs and cats from San Antonio’s best boardcertified specialists in the areas of oncology, ophthalmology and surgery.

Each SAVS specialty practice is individually owned by local veterinarians with already established roots in the San Antonio and surrounding areas. They have come together as partners with a common mission of providing the highest quality medicine and surgery with state-of-the-art technology, expertise and unmatched customer service in the veterinary specialty field.

SAVS is a boutique, referral-based veterinary clinic that sees cases by appointment only for each practice. SAVS will not be treating critically ill patients. These cases will be better served at 24-hour care facilities located throughout the city.

The three specialty practices located at SAVS include:

• South Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology (STVO) Diagnosis and management of all ocular diseases, including medical and surgical treatments

• Animal Cancer Center of Texas (ACCT) Diagnostics and treatment for all cancers, including medical therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy

• South Texas Veterinary Surgery (STVS) Procedures focusing on soft tissue, oncological (cancer) and orthopedic surgeries

SAVS will also have an advanced radiology section that will help to support those patients already referred to the other practices when Computed Tomography (CT), digital radiographs, or high-resolution ultrasound are required for a diagnosis.

SAVS will take a collaborative and compassionate approach to create an environment that is rich in knowledge, offers clients a variety of medical and surgical treatment options, and is supportive of the choices our clients make. SAVS patients will be referred to by a network of more than 600 veterinarians in the state of Texas. SAVS currently is the only specialty hospital in the San Antonio and surrounding area in which every single veterinary specialist is boardcertified in their respective field.

SAVS specialists will see mainly cats and dogs, but are also here to support various other animal-related organizations in San Antonio and the surrounding areas, such as San Antonio Zoo, Primarily Primates, Texas Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Guide Dogs of Texas, SNIPSA, and the US Government - Military Working Dogs.

SAVS is the home to the SAVS Learning Institute (SLI) and Greller Gallery as well. SLI is a space dedicated to learning and skill development in the field of veterinary medicine. The SLI hosts various accredited continuing education (CE) events throughout the year and is the training center for SAVS businesses. The SLI is home to a library of veterinary texts and will host training courses and collaborative learning for

veterinary technicians, hospital managers, nonprofits, interns, externs, residents, and students.

The Greller Gallery is an art gallery located within SAVS with the mission to engage the public with art that highlights the beauty of our planet and its inhabitants. Gallery owners Dr. Andrew and Faryl Greller have always believed in the power of art combined with compassionate veterinary care to help create an ambiance that promotes both healing and hope.

Faryl runs the gallery as an art initiative in support of their personal goals to be better community stewards, while Dr. Greller runs his veterinary practice (STVO), which is committed to helping his patients live happy and healthy lives with minimal discomfort and excellent vision.

The Grellers are committed to supporting local and national artists whose work strengthens nonprofits dedicated to various animal and environmental causes. To meet these ambitious goals, the Greller Gallery holds exhibitions throughout the year, providing visitors an opportunity to enjoy original artwork in various forms such as photography, abstract and realism paintings, mixed media, drawing, printmaking, short film, paper collage, and more.

Since June 2014, the Greller Gallery has raised close to $100,000 dollars for nonprofits. Beneficiaries of this support include the Center for Conservation & Research at San Antonio Zoo, Bat Conservation International, Nature Conservancy Group, Orangutan Foundation International, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, San Antonio River Foundation, Wayward Whiskers Cat Rescue, SNIPSA, Guide Dogs of Texas, San Antonio Humane Society, Therapy Animals of San Antonio, Train a Dog; Save a Warrior, Stray Cat Adoption of Texas, Animal Defense League and more.

The gallery has had the honor of working with many talented artists who support its mission, such as Danté Fenolio, MoMo and Pompa Brown, Grant Manier, Heather Gauthier, Yvette Shadrock, Carla Veliz, SAY Si Art Students, Paige Holland, Antonia Richardson, John Bramblitt, Allison Gregory, Louis Vega Trevino, Patti Schermerhorn, Elizabeth Elequin and others.
