Frost opens the newly expanded North Frost Financial Center

The newly updated North Frost Financial Center in San Antonio opened for business in June, signaling the area’s sustained economic strength and Frost’s commitment to the community.

Keeping ‘09 on the Road Since 1958

It takes a lot to succeed and grow in a family business today with so much competition from the corporate giants, but one local Alamo Heights business has obviously found the secret to not only surviving, but thriving during volatile economic conditions for 65 years.

They say that the only two things guaranteed in life are death and taxes, but we all know that you can always count on the fact that, eventually, your vehicle will break down or need to be serviced. Luckily Alamo Heights Garage has proven to be one of the most dependable automotive repair garages in the area for decades, and they continue to embrace the changes and improvements in automotive technology, keeping them on the cutting edge of the service industry locally.

Alamo Heights Garage first opened in 1958 on the corner of Broadway and Patterson. John and Lee Pundt began with three automotive technicians, including John. The business steadily grew, becoming a trusted local repair shop for residents in Alamo Heights and throughout San Antonio by delivering the best customer service for a fair price. In 1977 the garage moved to Chichester Street, behind the iconic Mobil station, on the corner of Broadway and Austin Highway, and they remained there until they outgrew that location. Darla runs the operations side of the business. She and Gary have been married for 36 years, and together, they have three sons. The family is very involved with local automotive events, and Darla even served on the board of directors for CarFest from 2015 to 2020. CarFest (carfestSA.org) is an annual event that takes place in April at The Freeman Coliseum. It brings automotive professionals together to provide free car repairs for those in need, offers scholarship opportunities for young students interested in automotive education, and they even give away free used cars at the event.

A Portrait of ‘09 Artists

We all have a special talent. That is what makes us all unique. For some of us, these talents become evident in our early years, but for others, those talents may not be discovered until later in life. For one local family, however, artistic talent can be seen, and often heard, as soon as you walk through the door of their beautiful home on Ridgemont Avenue in Terrell Hills.

Lee and Sarah Bailey first met in New Orleans when Sarah was only 14, and Lee was 18. Lee’s father, Dennis Bailey, was a well-known opera singer, and Lee had just begun his career, following in his father’s footsteps. Lee was set to perform in a production of “Camelot” when Sarah accompanied a friend to the auditions and was cast as a lady in waiting. The pair hit it off and became friends, even keeping in touch when Lee joined the Air Force during the Gulf War and completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base.

Their friendship flourished throughout the years as Sarah attended LSU, where she got her degree in Microbiology, and then went on to study Microbiology and Immunology at Tulane University, where she specialized in vaccine development and molecular genetics. Lee moved back to New Orleans after his military service, and he continued to sing with the opera company. Sarah also stayed in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, and she relocated with her family to San Antonio.

The couple stayed in touch, and eventually, Lee moved to San Antonio, and they were married in 2015. Together, they have a daughter named Caroline (5), but Sarah also has a daughter, Lily (18), who recently graduated from Alamo Heights High School and will be attending college at The University of Colorado Boulder. Lee also has two sons, Gabe (16) and Daniel (14), who live with their mother in Pensacola, Florida.

It was when Sarah was trying to decorate Caroline’s nursery that she discovered her artistic talent as a painter. She says, “I was trying to find unique artwork for my daughter’s nursery, and when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, I thought

that I would try my hand at painting myself. It turns out that I really enjoyed painting and creating, so I began to paint commissioned pieces for interior designers and friends.”

Today, Sarah works as a full-time artist and even has an impressive art gallery in her upstairs studio, where interested buyers can see her work showcased on display. Caroline has her own artist’s corner in the studio as well, where she creates art alongside her mom.

Lee has a commanding presence, as most opera singers do, and he is proud of his career as a performing arts teacher and instructor. He runs his Farrar Performing Arts Studios from his own music and recording studio downstairs in their home, where he teaches voice, guitar, piano, acting, songwriting, musical composition, and music theory to students from ages 4 to 80. Lee takes new students at the beginner level, and he also works with master performers, helping them to fine-tune their gifts. Lee states, “I meet my students wherever they are in their artistic journey. Each student has their own unique goal for their talents, and I help them reach those milestones based on their individual desires and goals.”

Lee is currently working toward his own goal to return to performing, and he is working on several projects as a singer/songwriter as well. He will be performing a recital at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Terrell Hills in October.

The Baileys love living in their ‘09 community and really enjoy just walking their dog, Rex, through the neighborhood. Sarah says, “It is the strong sense of community that keeps us here, and we love that everyone seems to know and look out for each other.”

There is a sense of peace in the Bailey household, even though it can get quite chaotic with students coming and going to Lee’s studio and energetic Caroline running around while big sister, Lily, tries to wrangle her, but you can feel the love that surrounds them. It is evident that this partnership has created a true, modern, blended American family and that together, Lee and Sarah have truly found their home.

How Can You Help Prevent Snakebite on Dogs

Know which venomous snakes are common in your area, or in an area that you’re planning to visit with your dog. Clear your yard of fallen logs, trash, and deep leaf litter. Don’t let your dog stick their head in holes, bushes, or tall grasses. Snakes are more active after dark and in warm weather, so keep your dog inside after dusk when you know venomous snakes are in the area. Rattlesnakes and copperheads prefer dryer areas, and water moccasins prefer wet areas, so be mindful of the different environments your dog likes to play, sniff, splash, or walk in when you’re outdoors in an area known to have venomous snakes.

Snakes frequent areas where they can find food. Popular prey for snakes are mice, rats, squirrels, and rabbits, so the more inhospitable your yard is to these animals, the less inviting your yard will be to snakes. You could also take steps to attract owls or hawks to nest on your property to help deter snake prey and snakes themselves. (Just know that birds of prey have

their own considerations when keeping small dogs or puppies safe.)

Snake repellents (including commercial powders, liquids, and noisemakers, as well as home remedies like mothballs) are ineffective. Snake aversion training for dogs is available, especially in areas with high numbers of venomous snakes. If you live in an area where venomous snakes are a grave concern, you may want to learn how snake aversion training works by consulting a professional trainer who specializes in it to decide if it’s something you wish to consider.

Signs of Venomous Snakebite in Dogs:

Besides possible wounds, dogs can exhibit several other signs of snakebite. Venomous snakebites are extremely painful. While some dogs are very stoic and will hide their pain, others may react by crying and hiding. Very often they will vomit and have diarrhea soon

after the bite. Swelling may appear within minutes, followed by bruising. But either could also come on more slowly.

Can I Treat My Dog’s Venomous Snakebite With First Aid?

No. If your dog was bitten by a venomous snake, the only thing you can do is remove the dog’s collar, keep your dog calm, and head to the closest emergency vet that has antivenom. If you are hiking, carry your dog to your car if you’re able to. If possible, have somebody meet you along the trail to pick you up.

If you saw a common non-venomous snake (like a garter snake or a ribbon snake) bite your dog, you should still contact your vet, as even non-venomous snake bites can become infected if left untreated. If you’re unsure at all if the snake was venomous, you should contact your vet immediately.

JOY & BARBECUE – THEY’RE KIND OF THE SAME THING

“Barbecue is celebration. It’s being outdoors, running through a sprinkler, and playing volleyball with the kids. It’s like no other food. It’s festive. It’s family. You’re going to get your shirt dirty if you’re eating it right,” says Stanley Shropshire, the friendly owner/founder of Big Bib Barbecue on Austin Highway; “You’re going to need a big bib.”

“Fire up a barbecue pit, and people start gathering. What other food is so communal and fun? Barbecue is joy. It’s a lifestyle,” says Shropshire. He should know: he has been living the barbecue life for two-plus decades.

“Even as a kid, I wanted to barbecue. My family didn’t cook out, but I heard about it from kids at school whose families would have backyard barbecues on weekends and holidays. I’d see people grilling burgers, hotdogs, or brisket in Brackenridge Park, and they didn’t have a care in the world. I wanted to be a part of that,” the big-hearted Big Bib BBQ owner recalls.

So in late 1999, Shropshire went to H-E-B, bought a barrel-style barbecue grill, some beef, a few bags of charcoal, and far too much lighter fluid. Then he set up his grill by an East Side car wash and began teaching himself to barbecue.

“I didn’t know what I was doing—didn’t know anything about grades or cuts of meat, didn’t know what wood to use. I couldn’t even get the grill lit; I used up six cans of lighter fluid and then squirted on some more! Ha! The meat smelled and tasted like fuel. I messed up a lot of meat, but I ate it, and I learned,” he grinned. “A friend named

Kenny Palmer knew about barbecue and taught me a lot. With tons of trial and error, I learned and honed my skills. I catered for nine years before I opened Big Bib BBQ a decade ago. I put my heart into it, and it just got better and better,” says Shropshire with a winning smile. Heart and hard work paid off: Today, he not only owns one of San Antonio’s most popular barbecue joints, but he also opened a Big Bib BBQ in New Braunfels last October and boasts Big Bib BBQ stands at the Alamodome.

An enticing aroma greets guests at the door, as does a family-like team. The friendly staff had me smiling as I stepped up to the sparkling-clean front counter. “We all just love, love, love, love barbecue,” says Shropshire, who wants customers to “leave with a side order of joy.”

Barbecue has long been a male-dominated business, but just notice the number of women behind the scenes at Big Bib. General Manager and professional pit-master Tamu Gonzales is their 4’ 11” female hand that rocks the cradle, bringing a high level of excellence and skill to the table.

“When she set out to learn barbecue, Gonzales took the thing, grabbed it, embraced it, and ran away with it. I’m so proud of her,” remarks Shropshire. Not many women, especially women of color, are pro pit masters in Texas, but Gonzales doesn’t think about that. Her fiery focus is on mastering meat with consistency, quality, patience, and love.

Big Bib’s menu offers smoked meats, including prime brisket, both mild and jalapeño sausage, pulled pork, chicken, baby-back ribs, rib tips, turkey legs (on Saturdays and Sundays only), turkey breast, and more. Enjoy the many sides, like sweet potato and baked potato casseroles, pinto beans, hot mac-n-cheese, green beans, and collard greens. Try loaded spuds and fried catfish. Then get a dessert, like cake and banana pudding. Big Bib has a full liquor license and serves margaritas and more.

It’s remarkable how sparkling clean Big Bibb restaurants are. In fact, they’ve been named “San Antonio’s Cleanest Kitchen” and thrice won WOAI News4 SA’s “Blue Plate” award.

Yesterday I was wearing a silk blouse as I greedily grabbed a slice of brisket with my fingers. Reaching for more napkins, I thought, “I’m gonna need a bigger bib!”

After a warm goodbye from Shropshire and the ladies behind the counter, I left with a big barbeque plate for my husband, a little sauce on my sleeve, and, yes, a generous side of joy.
