- EDITOR’S LETTER

-

March 2022 What an honor it is to step into the role of Editor of 78209 Magazine! Although I’m new to the role, I feel like it’s a bit of a homecoming for me, as both of my parents graduated from Alamo Heights High School, and I spent many days and nights at my grandparent’s house on Oak Glen in Northwood. A lot has changed since those memorable childhood trips get an Easter dress at Juvenile Fashions in Sunset Ridge or a bean burger at Sills Snack Shack, but the feeling of community and tradition has not changed a bit. I look forward to sharing stories about the businesses and people who make 78209 so special. One of those special people is D.C. Bloom, a talented writer, artist, and singer/songwriter. Although he suffered a debilitating stroke that left him wheelchairbound five years ago, he spends his days doing the things he loves - creating art, writing songs, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He even teaches art classes to other residents at Franklin Park Alamo Heights, where he lives. What an inspiration! I don’t know about you, but it’s much easier for me to get a workout in if I can do it with a friend. That’s precisely what inspired Brandy Webb to open Pure Barre Alamo Heights, where the company philosophy is all about creating a community within the studio. No dance experience is required to take classes at Pure Barre! Instructors go through a rigorous training program and provide individual attention to help each member get maximum results from their fitness routine. March is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor dining while the weather is not too hot. Cementville Grille at the Quarry Golf Course offers delicious American fare with a covered patio and a gorgeous view of the course’s back nine. Head chef, Fred Jones, has been with Cementville Grille since it opened nearly 30 years ago. I think he must know the recipe for success! And speaking of success, I’m grateful for the passion and care that Susan Thornton has had over the past four years as Editor of 78209 Magazine. Although we are sad to see her move on to a new season in life, we are so excited for her to spend time with her precious grandbabies. We will miss her energy and inner joy!

MIXED VIEWS ON PLANS FOR ARGYLE CLUB ADDITION Alamo Heights city council recently heard details on plans for adding on to the main structure of the Argyle Club at 934 Patterson. The historic building is one of the oldest in Bexar County. Several residents who live near the club argued against approving the proposed addition. They fear more significant street congestion and not enough parking on the Argyle grounds. The planned expansion would replace the tents currently used to accommodate weddings and receptions at the club. Council tabled any action on the proposal, pending further study. The building was constructed in 1859 as headquarters for Charles Anderson’s 1400-acre horse ranch. Over the years, 12 78209magazine.com

it has been a private residence, a hotel, a boarding house, and, currently, a dinner club and entertainment venue. Writing in the San Antonio Express News, Richard Marini notes the club raises money for research. “In an unusual arrangement, each club member is required to make a minimum $1,000 donation annually to what is now the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, which was founded in 1941 by Tom Slick and now owns the property. With more than 1,500 members, the club supports Texas Biomed to the tune of about $1.2 million annually...”

COMMERCIAL SHOOT COMES TO ALAMO HEIGHTS A Safelite commercial recently was shot in the 600 block of Patterson Avenue in Alamo Heights. The production caused quite a stir on the leafy, suburban block. Producer Katie Abbott says the commercial’s filming at an Alamo Heights home and in and around that neighborhood was the first location of a five-day shoot for the windshield repair company. The commercial features a father giving his teenage daughter driving lessons when a rock hits their windshield. About forty crew members were on location, and the house was scouted and selected by the director for its “charm”. The crew shot from 7 am to after 5 pm, with many residents stopping to take photos, including former Alamo Heights councilman Stanley McCormick.

POT BELLY SANDWICH SHOP VACATES QUARRY VILLAGE, MAPLE STREET BISCUIT COMPANY TAKES OVER SPACE Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Pot Belly Pig closed its Quarry Village location and consolidated its operation at 3006 Broadway Street, 78209. The Quarry Village address at 300 E. Basse Rd., Suite 105, remained vacant until February 2022. That’s when Maple Street Biscuit Company remodeled the space and opened its doors. Maple Street was founded in 2012 and features a menu of biscuits, waffles, and breakfast bowls. It has more than 40 locations spread across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The chain is owned by Cracker Barrel, which acquired it in 2019. The company says it offers comfort food with a modern twist. In addition to the Quarry Market location, Maple Street is opening a store at 10650 Culebra Road, in the Alamo Ranch area.

LULU’S GIANT CINNAMON ROLLS HAVE NEW LIFE When Lulu’s Bakery & Cafe closed during the pandemic, its world-renowned 3-lb cinnamon roll was gone too. For years, the “big as your head” roll was widely featured on TV food shows like “Man v. Food”. But the roll is back, thanks to Green Vegetarian Cuisine owner Mike Behrend. He is the son of Lulu’s founder, Lulu Singleton. Recently, Behrend announced that the giant rolls would be available at his restaurants using his mother’s original recipe in a news release. That recipe, Behrend says, dates to 1992. The cinnamon rolls can be found at both Green Vegetarian Cuisine locations in Alamo Quarry Market and Alon Town Center for $12. Orders can be placed at www.eatatgreen.com. So, forget about the calories, dig in and enjoy the humongous cinnamon rolls. 18 78209magazine.com

The Grand Prize winner recipient won Whataburger for a year, $5,000 for their school’s art program, and a one-week scholarship to attend Southwest School of Art’s Summer Program!

MAX’S WINE DIVE SHUTTERED Max’s Wine Dive, 340 E. Basse Road, was the place to go for happy hour celebrations, lunches, and dinners in the Quarry Village for more than a decade. As of February 1, 2022, the restaurant is reported closed for good. There is no word yet on what business may take over the space.

BUSINESS PROFILE -

Setting the Barre for Fitness in ‘09 Brandy Webb has always worked hard to stay fit, but after giving birth to her fourth child, she realized she needed to find a low-impact workout routine. That is when she came across a Pure Barre fitness studio and fell in love with the program and the franchise philosophy of creating a community within the studio. Brandy was born and raised in San Antonio and attended Churchill High School. She chose to open her own Pure Barre fitness studio in Alamo Heights because the community embodies the same spirit that she has created within her studio. Webb currently lives in New Braunfels, where she has a second Pure Barre location, but when she opened the Pure Barre studio in the Magnolia Heights building on the corner of Broadway and Austin Highway in July 2020, she knew that she had found the perfect home. She states, “I chose to open Pure Barre in Alamo Heights because it is such a cohesive community, and we wanted to create a space where people felt good about coming to work out in a place where they felt accepted. We wanted to create a place where members look forward to coming because there are so many reasons not to workout in our busy lives.” Pure Barre offers small group classes that guide participants through basic low-impact and high-intensity movements to strengthen and tone your body while utilizing a balletinspired barre for stability. There are a variety of classes to choose from at Pure Barre, based on your skill and fitness level, but the incredibly talented and attentive instructors can tailor the movements to fit the ability of each individual. There are three disciplines to the Pure Barre curriculum: - Pure Barre Classic is the original core class that uses a proprietary technique that offers the fastest, most effective, low-impact, full-body workout. Participants are guided through a 50-minute workout of low-impact, high-intensity isometric movements designed to improve your flexibility while strengthening and toning your body. - Pure Reform is a full-body barre workout that targets and reshapes all of the major muscle groups through resistance-based strength training. This 50-minute class blends the classic Pure Barre technique with resistancebased movements using bands, sliders, and the barre itself. - Pure Empower is a fusion of classic barre movements and cardio-centric interval training designed to elevate your heart rate, build strength, and increase metabolism. The classes are 45 minutes long and utilize dynamic movements with ankle weights and a plyometric platform to target different muscle groups simultaneously at an invigorating pace. Becoming a Pure Barre instructor is not an easy task.

Instructors must first participate as studio members for a period of time and then attend corporate training, followed by six weeks of supervised training in the studio. They must also complete 90 hours of continuing education as a Pure Barre instructor during their first year. This intense training program makes sure that instructors become experts in the Pure Barre training methodology and teaches them how to focus on each member individually so that everyone gets the maximum result from their fitness program. Jessica Thomas, the studio General Manager, states, “Becoming a Pure Barre instructor is difficult because there is such an emphasis on personal attention. Our program offers functional exercise for everyone, regardless of age, body type, or fitness level. We meet you where you are so that you can achieve your strength and fitness goals.” Pure Barre Alamo Heights currently offers over 50 classes throughout the week, about nine classes per day, and even offers a class at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays for those early risers who want to get a jump on the day. Most members attend Pure Barre classes three to five times per week, and the studio welcomes men and women of all ages.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS -

A Talented Artist Blooms in Alamo Heights By Meredith Kay Photography by Al Rendon

When you walk into the apartment of D.C. Bloom, your eyes don’t know where to look first. The walls are covered in unique shadow box artwork containing one-of-a-kind artifacts arranged in thematic vignettes. Bloom states that his shadow box artwork was inspired by Joseph Cornell, an American visual artist and filmmaker credited with a form of sculpture called assemblage. Bloom’s art boxes are inspired and sourced from those mementos that we all keep hidden away in junk drawers and memory boxes up in the closet. They consist of event tickets, pictures, and tchotchkes that we all collect from the most memorable experiences in our lives. Bloom says that his shadow boxes are autobiographical and that each one is personal. One box features a tribute to Elvis, with a broken 45 record, a torn piece of sheet music, a picture of The King himself, and an old, torn king of spades playing card. There are also boxes that feature an ode to Texas A&M and U.T. Austin, along with one that features an old cover of a western graphic novel with bullets and a toy gun. Each box is incredibly unique and holds a story that Bloom is happy to explain. David Charles Bloom was born in Northwest Ohio and studied art education at the University of Toledo. His father was a dairy farmer, and D.C. remembers that his only goal growing up was NOT to become a dairy farmer. So, he studied hard, made his way through college, and began his professional career as a speech writer for the FBI. He married his high school sweetheart and moved to Washington D.C., where he worked under FBI director William Webster until 1988. He then went on to study Political Science at George Mason University in Virginia and eventually moved to Boston to work for Nynex, now Verizon, until he moved to Texas to become the Comptroller of Public Accounts for the state of Texas in Austin. In 2004, Bloom moved to San Antonio to work for SBC, now AT&T, and he has called the Alamo City home ever since. He and his wife have two children. His daughter, Alyssa, teaches biology at Lee High School and has a daughter named Lilah, who is eight years old. His son, Evan, works in cybersecurity and also has an 8-year-old son named Jackson. D.C.

loves being a grandpa and spends time showing them how to create their own shadow boxes with things found at thrift stores and trinkets given to him by friends and neighbors. Bloom lives at Franklin Park Alamo Heights, a luxury retirement community on Sunset, where he sometimes teaches art classes to other residents. He is also an avid musician. He plays the guitar beautifully and has recorded five albums. He has even had an impressive career as a songwriter and a performer. In fact, it was a visit to the annual songwriter’s conference in Kerrville one year that sparked his love for Texas and Texas music. About that experience, Bloom states, “I have always been a Texas music fan, and I was so inspired by the artists I met in Kerrville that I committed to writing one song per week for an entire year.” Bloom wrote 55 songs that year, and the best songs were recorded for his first album. Currently, Bloom is working remotely for the CDC, writing for the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. He sources content and interviews experts about health concerns affecting Alaska. He reports on COVID-19 and how it has affected the various communities in Alaska. Through his research, Bloom says, “No community suffered more than the native population in Alaska during the Spanish flu pandemic, and it’s my job to monitor the data and keep up to date on how this pandemic is impacting the state and its native peoples.” Last month marked the 5th anniversary of Bloom’s debilitating stroke, but he still manages to write, create art, and play music from his wheelchair quite effectively. He is grateful when he muses, “I’m so thankful and blessed that I can still write and create art and music because I get to live my passion and put it out there for others to see and appreciate.” MARCH 2022

Ideas For Mixing Natural Elements When handled well, individual elements of metal and marble deliver an added sense of excitement and style to modern interior spaces. When the two are mixed, an almost endless realm of design possibilities opens. It is important, however, to understand each material and how it fits within the history of design. Working with Metals It can be tempting to use only one type or color of metal, but there is nothing wrong with mixing metals in the design to create contrast and visual interest. Neutral metals work well to add variety in any situation, and by bringing in cool metal and warm metal options, the different metals create an eclectic design. Combining pieces of matte, polished, and hammered metals provides interest in the room.

That said, it is often best to select one primary metal to use as the dominate element and choosing other colors and materials to accent the primary color. A reserved approach is key, as mixing too many colors and textures can look disjointed, but don’t forget to have fun and match your own style. Metal And Marble Marble holds a revered position throughout history—be it of art, architecture, or design. Michelangelo used white Italian marble to carve the statue of David; the ancient Greeks used white marble for many temples and places of worship; Danby marble from Vermont graces many historically significant American buildings. As for metals, bronze doesn’t take a back seat in terms of historical significance. Well beyond the tools and weapons of the Bronze Age, early artists and designers were quick to adopt elements of metal into their designs, both for its durability and beauty. Today, marble continues to be the star of many contemporary spaces, evoking feelings of refinement and timelessness, and many architects and designers are breaking up traditional uses of marbles with elements of metal to create a sense of gravitas. Pairing the rugged aspect of stone with a smooth, metallic design focal point is definitely a growing design trend. If you want to pair metal with stone in a way that stands out, look for contrasting tones. The dark honey color of bronze creates a striking contrast with iridescent white marble or grey stone blocks like Carrara Marble or Argento Marble. Materials Marketing can help match the perfect natural stones for any metal—be it a stainless-steel appliance, rose gold drawer pulls, or brushed nickel hardware. Their expert sales and design associates can even help you explore mosaics that mix natural stone and metallic elements directly within the patterns. Visit their new showroom in Alamo Heights to learn more! Visit Materials-Marketing.com or stop by our San Antonio showroom to learn more.

HOMETOWN HERO

Anne Krause By Ron Aaron Eisenberg

There aren’t many people, especially women, who can say, “Flying a T-38 supersonic jet, especially when you hit the afterburners, is a real kick in the pants. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.”

In 1996, Krause was named executive officer of the Thunderbirds, the USAF elite fighter aircraft squadron. That was Krause’s last assignment in the military. She separated from the Air Force in 1999 as a Captain.

That’s Anne Krause. And she is not just any woman. Flying T-38 trainers is what she did after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1990. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Differential Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, with a 4.0-grade point average.

Krause is president & executive director of the Hemisfair Conservancy in San Antonio, an agency she co-founded in 2014. She has also served as president of the Alamo Heights School Foundation.

Krause lives in Alamo Heights. Born in North Carolina, she was raised in Aurora, Illinois. She excelled in math and science in high school but had no idea about college. “My guidance counselor was familiar with the service academies and encouraged me to apply.”

Anne, and her husband, Paul Krause, Lt. Col. (Ret), married in November 2003. He’s a former Thunderbirds’ pilot. She calls him PK, his call sign.

The U.S. Air Force Academy was a logical choice. Her grandfather and great uncle were pilots in WWII, and she grew up listening to their stories. Plus, she lived near O’Hare International Airport, so airplanes were a part of her every day. Krause completed pilot training at Reese Air Force Base (now closed) near Lubbock, Texas. In 1995, she went to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on a Special Duty Assignment, at the height of the migrant crisis. “I was the officer in charge of linguist operations and had 180 linguists reporting to me.” Thousands of people were seeking asylum in the U.S.; most were Spanish speakers. 28 78209magazine.com

They have two sons who graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 2019 and a third son who will graduate in 2023. “And I have two wonderful stepdaughters, ages 25 and 21. The elder lives in Austin, and the younger attends Colorado State.” She adds, “PK and I refer to our blended family as ‘his, hers, ours and a bonus”. The “bonus” is a young man they took into their home after both of his parents were killed in an auto accident. A crash he survived. When I asked her if she and Paul still fly airplanes, she laughed and said, “That’s an empty nester goal for PK and me! Our youngest graduates from AHHS next year.” Look for a couple of jet jockeys to take to the skies once again.

THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS OF ‘09

Mules on “Broadway” We are celebrating the talents of our students as they premiered the first musical since the onset of the pandemic over two years ago. We enjoyed a first-hand look at the work backstage, in the orchestra pit, and center stage during the final dress rehearsal. We are so impressed with the diversity of talent and how the director, Bryan Stanton, engages these students in learning, responsibility, and performance. Outside of it being an AH-mazing show, showcasing our Interrelated Arts Program in theater, band orchestra, and choir, Mr. Stanton always ties our Profile of a Learner and the commitment to engaging socially and globally to his theater events. During this event, students invited audience members to donate to Child Advocates of San Antonio (CASA), providing items necessary for 30 78209magazine.com

teenagers to be successful during a challenging time in their lives. Donations included backpacks, pajamas, and personal necessities. All this, and two casts! “Mama Mia” premiered on Thursday, January 27, and ran through Sunday, January 30, at Alamo Heights High School. Additional congratulations go out to these theater students! Theatre students earned accolades at the Texas Thespians State Festival in late November. Students brought home top honors in Monologue, Costume Construction, Scenic Design, and Solo Song performances. The students will compete at the national level in June 2022. We look forward to seeing more from these talented teens!

Educators Recognized for Shining Light on Inclusivity Congratulations to our outstanding Alamo Heights High School faculty members, Erika Guerrero and Bryan Stanton. In honor of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in October, the Learning Disabilities Association of Texas (LDATX) elicited nominations for the Bright Light award highlighting Texas educators working with special education or 504 students in the K-12 setting who: use promising and innovative practices in the classroom; make a large impact on the student(s); create a safe, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment for students; and exude passion and enthusiasm for the profession. Both Ms. Guerrero and Mr. Stanton earned the top Bright Light Award! They will each receive a free one-year membership to the Learning Disabilities Association of America that includes a membership to the local Texas chapter, LDATX, and $500 cash. LDATX will also be highlighting the work they are doing via their social media outlets. These two incredible educators were selected due to the AH-mazing work they do every day to support and engage students.

We are thankful for their work to support these incredible “Bright Lights” in students with learning disabilities.

“Mr. Stanton’s impact on students is so immense. He gives our students with disabilities the chance to take the stage and spotlight them not because of their disabilities but because of their abilities. His students have thrived in his class and other classes with advancements in mobility, verbal communication, memorization, and social skills.”

Bryan Stanton, Alamo Heights High School

“Mrs. Guerrero helped to start the Unified Champions Club at our high school. In 2018, Alamo Heights High School’s Unified program was chosen as the school site visit for the Special Olympics of North America Unified Conference of 2018. SONA is presented with schools in the State that best represent the Unified Generation movement, and one school is selected to showcase their program. With the help of her club’s inclusive leadership board, the school planned a funfilled day for over 300 to include superintendents, athletic directors, teachers, coaches, and students from across the country, Canada, and Asia. Simplicity is one of those things we give lip service to amid our complex and busy lives. But the complexity tends to win out. Our calendars, our relationships, our finances, and even our religion become increasingly complicated. The old Shaker hymn says, “’Tis a gift to be simple.” It is a gift that Jesus gives us. Allergies: Why Spring May Bring More than Warm Weather By Dr. Nichole D’Intino, Veterinarian Partner, CityVet

Do you have a pet that is constantly itching? If so, you’ve probably wondered if your furry friend could have allergies. Unfortunately, allergies are quite common in dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats. Environmental allergens, such as pollen and molds, are the most common culprit for allergies. These allergens enter through the skin barrier and cause an intense itching sensation that can be downright miserable, a condition known as atopic dermatitis. The scratching and itching can lead to red, swollen, and irritated skin and even infections of the ears and skin. It is important to point out that there are other conditions that can cause your pet to be severely itchy such as parasites or endocrine disorders. Your veterinarian can partner with you to help find the root cause of the itching in your pet. So, you think your pet may have allergies, now what? A trip to your local veterinarian for a full physical exam is the best place to start. Your veterinarian may ask you some questions about your pet’s environment, food, medications, and when the last time they had blood work performed. Often itchy pets have more than one condition contributing to their skin troubles, and a thorough evaluation from your veterinarian will help. While there is no specific test to determine if your pet has atopic dermatitis, some testing may be performed to rule out other causes of itching. If your pet has been diagnosed with allergies, you may be anxious to find some relief for them. In recent years there have been many new developments surrounding canine and feline dermatology, including medications that stop the itch sensation at the cellular level. These medications work very quickly to address the itching, giving you and your veterinarian time to address the underlying cause and making your pet feel relief sooner. Providing your pet relief from allergies takes a holistic approach; there is not a one size fits all treatment plan. After treating any concurrent infections and controlling 38 78209magazine.com

the itch, the next step is to help reduce inflammation. Inflammation can be reduced by using medications or supplements in combination with allergy treatments. Other options include immunotherapy and immunemodulating therapies that change the immune system’s response to allergens. Here are some changes you can make to help reduce the number of allergens your pet is exposed to: - Minimize flowering houseplants. - Give your pet a bath weekly with an oatmeal-based shampoo to help remove allergens from their fur. Be sure to use water that is just warm to the touch and allow them to air dry to prevent their skin from further drying out. - Wash their bedding and stuffed toys regularly; this will help with dust mites. - Use an air filter system in the home. - Regular grooming to help keep the skin clean and healthy. - Use high-quality flea and tick prevention all year long. Just like our allergies, your pet’s allergies will need to be managed throughout their life, and flare-ups will happen from time to time. Prompt treatment can help clear these flare-ups as quickly as possible. As a veterinarian, I know that seeing your pets uncomfortable from itching can be extremely frustrating. It is your veterinarians’ goal to be a source of information and help guide you in making the best treatment decisions for your pet. If the current treatments are not providing enough relief, you may be offered a referral to a veterinary dermatologist for further testing and treatment options.

March 20 - National Animal Poison Prevention Week March 23 - National Puppy Day

Pet Grooming is often seen more as a luxury than a necessity. This is far from the truth. The skin is the largest organ of their body. We must recognize it as an essential part of their health and well-being. When a pet has severe mats covering its body, it pulls the skin-tight, causing intense irritation and, in some extreme cases, loss of proper blood flow. A pet needs to be well brushed daily and have a consistent haircut schedule to avoid this problem. While short hair pets have a lower maintenance coat, certain breeds may need de-shedding treatments to help maintain good hygiene. Nail trimming and grinding are also important. Long nails, if unattended, can slowly grow into a pet’s paw pad and cause joint issues. Teeth brushing helps maintain dental hygiene in your pet by lowering plaque buildup. Ear cleaning and ear hair plucking help reduce bacterial build-up in your pet’s ears that may cause infection over time. Anal gland expressions are done to help reduce the possibility of an anal gland compaction/eruption and anal gland infection. Having your pet seen by a veterinary groomer can be very beneficial in detecting new growths early, allergy flare-ups, and much more. It also gives the owner peace of mind knowing that medical staff is nearby to take care of any services the pet may need. If you have any questions regarding this topic, please give us a call for a detailed list of the grooming services we offer. We specialize in not only making pets look great but feel great too.

Early Heard = Early Word Early Identification and Intervention for Hearing Loss in Babies By Lindsay Rodriguez M.Ed., Sunshine Cottage Parent-Infant Advisor

As Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children celebrates its 75th anniversary, we look back and see how the evolution and development of technology have been the driving force in the success of our children. Technology has touched all aspects of our lives. In the field of children’s hearing loss, the impact of new developments has been felt most profoundly. Prior to legislation in 1999, when a baby was born with a hearing loss, parents often did not learn of their child’s hearing loss until the baby was two or three years old. By the time the loss was identified, opportunities for some children were limited and challenging. With the passing of the universal newborn screening legislation (1999) requiring all babies to receive hearing screenings prior to leaving the hospital, hearing loss in children is being identified much earlier. A child should be screened for hearing loss by the time the baby is one month old, preferably before the family leaves the hospital after the birth. When a baby does not pass that screen, the next step is to identify that the hearing loss is present through a full hearing diagnostic screening by three months of age. An audiologist will perform an Auditory Brainstem test to determine the type and degree of hearing loss and the best course of action. The team of specialized Pediatric Audiologists at Sunshine Cottage School provides this service. By the time the baby is six months old, she should be enrolled in early intervention services and be fitted with the appropriate hearing technology. Sunshine Cottage School has a well-established Parent-Infant Program with 42 78209magazine.com

highly trained Certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists. They work in conjunction with the family and the Pediatric Audiologists to guide the family along the necessary steps of their hearing journey. The school also has a Hearing Aid Loaner Program so that families may immediately borrow the hearing technology they need for their baby. Suppose a family can accomplish 1-3-6 for their baby. In that case, the chances of developing hearing abilities and spoken language are highly enhanced, allowing the child to succeed in a world that relies on the spoken word. Families in Sunshine Cottage Parent-Infant Program learn how to facilitate and nurture listening and spoken language in their babies. They can take advantage of the fastest period of brain cell growth in human life: a baby’s brain is a quarter of adult size at birth and doubles in size in the first year, and is 90% of adult size by age 5. It is vitally important to give babies with hearing loss full access to sound as soon as possible; research shows that the primary window for stimulating the auditory neural pathways in the brain is from birth to six months. Two to three babies born daily in Texas are found to be deaf or hard of hearing. Failure to identify hearing challenges before six months of age impacts the development of language, literacy, and learning potential, creating a developmental emergency. The key to academic, social, and communication success for a child who is deaf or hard of hearing is indeed early identification and intervention.
