Building Community Through Quality Healthcare
By Dawn Robinette, APR | Photography by David Teran
There are moments in your career that inspire you to pause and reflect. As Megan Cool Amalakuhan, FACHE, CEO of Methodist Hospital Westover Hills, works to open the doors of Methodist’s newest full-service, acute care hospital later this fall, she’s grateful for the journey – and the opportunity to serve the community.
“It's really a full circle moment to be at a de novo hospital. I started at a de novo hospital. In about a year and a half, you could see the transformation of the community. And here I am again with the same opportunity to witness community transformation that happens when you have access to high-quality health care closer to your home,” she explains.
Yet it’s not a journey she planned. Amalakuhan never intended to enter the healthcare field, but proximity and a natural fit for her skills changed all of that. “HCA Healthcare, one of our partners at Methodist Healthcare, built a hospital right next to where I grew up and went to college. And when you're young, you wonder, ‘What do I want to do when I get out of college?’ It was truly divine intervention. I saw how having access to care could be transformative for the community it serves.”
The Tennessee native jumped at an opportunity to join the hospital in an accounting role. “That began my relationship with hospital administration. The healthcare industry allowed me to combine my social and analytical sides. It empowered me to explore my passion for understanding the relationships within humanity.
Nineteen years later, she’s a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives –and that hospital is still in her life. “My family is still in the community. It was the same hospital where my father transitioned into hospice and that I trusted to reduce my anxieties after an emergency surgery at a nearby HCA hospital while visiting the Nashville area earlier this year.
“I stepped back into that ER to have a CT to check things out before I came back home. Again, it
struck me how hospitals can be the fabric of our communities. You turn to hospitals in crisis. You turn to hospitals as a place of respite. I grew up with the value of being responsible for others. I'm blessed. I'm where I need to be, in the industry I need to be in.
“I think that's really rare now. I'm on the cusp of being a millennial. For me to be in the same organization for 19 years is just unheard of. But I lucked out with an amazing opportunity in a company that supports growth and supports female leadership.”
It’s something she’d tell her younger self. “‘You may not have gone where you intended to go, but you'll end up where you need to be.’ That sticks with me. Because I'm originally from south of Nashville, but I've been in San Antonio and Austin for many years I thought I was supposed to be somewhere else, and God kept leading me somewhere that wasn't on my plan.
“I make the joke that you know what God does to all your well-intended plans? He crumbles them up and makes better ones for you. Throws them out. Throughout my journey over the last 10-
plus years, I've learned that that's it. I may not go where I intend to go, but I'll end up where I need to be.”
Part of being where she needs to be is ensuring that she’s providing the support needed that allows health care practitioners to focus on what they do best: patient care.
“I joke that I want to be the wind beneath people's wings. I consider myself support services, strategic support services, whatever it is, so clinicians don't have to think about anything else except delivering high-quality, consistent healing experiences. We get to step back and see all the operational processes, clinical processes, support processes, what's happening in the community – and how can we take care of our community. We have to relentlessly pursue creating healing experiences. That's our vision. We need to do everything that we can to reduce any burden on a clinician that would be a barrier for them to deliver consistent, high-quality healing experiences.
“Quotes speak to me a lot. The Maya Angelou quote about how people may forget what you said or forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel. That plays out in hospitals moment by moment. If you remember and keep hold of that, the relationship that patients and their families let you in and trust you, they trust that you are going to consistently deliver healing experiences throughout their whole stay.
“Going back to who I am, and really what drives me, I feel responsible to create that experience. That's what my mission is for our community and our patients. So how can I set others up for success so that patients and their families trust us – and we deliver on that promise for them.”
Amalakuhan was the first employee hired for the new hospital – while she was six months pregnant. The now mother of two young girls, 3-year-old Aria, and almost 1-year-old Anjali, credits her husband, Dr. Bravein Amalakuhan, a pulmonary critical care physician – and a robust
support system – for allowing her to keep both family and work on track. “Work/life balance is not 50/50. There are times when it might be 80/20 or 20/80, but there is a balance. It lets us show up when I’m at home, and I feel like I have a great support system when I’m not there. Then when I’m not at work, I have a great support system at work that lets me show up at home.”
Despite her busy schedule, she finds time to fit in fun. “I'm a live entertainment junkie. I love concerts, I love live music, musicals, comedy shows, Broadway shows. There's nothing like experiencing the talents and artistry of people right in front of you. So, if I get an opportunity to be able to plan something and go to something, that's what I seek out.”
"Being in health care, you get to see and work with people who dedicate their lives to the care and improvement of other human life."
How does she make it all work? She focuses on prioritizing what’s important and borrows the medical practice of making rounds. “I try to focus on making time for what's most significant. Especially at an executive level, I can spend a lot of time on what's right in front of me. But you have to instead make time for what's most significant. An example of that in health care and administration is rounding with our colleagues and our patients, hearing directly from them. Our goal is to provide an excellent patient care experience today. So how are we doing? You can formulate a much better connection to what the solution needs to be if you're rounding and spending time directly with your colleagues. I think the solutions that come out of being visible to our colleagues and our patients are the most impactful ones.”
She also takes time to assess challenges and then find the right solution. “I like to find solutions where I break it down into what's the process, people or resources needed, but also what are
the relationships needed to be successful at something and how can I impact that?
“I also really focus, and I coach quite a bit on, looking what are the things that we can control? Because you can spend time on finding solutions for challenges that maybe won't have such an impact because that's not within our sphere of influence. So, can you directly control this outcome? Is it something for us to think about and keep in the back of our minds that we can't control it? Or is there some way to indirectly impact it?
No matter what challenges pop up, she remains inspired by what she calls “micro-mission moments,” the brilliance in the basics of providing people-focused, high-quality care.
“Being in health care, you get to see and work with people who dedicate their lives to the care and improvement of other human life. I get to witness that a lot in different places and different ways. As a support person, as a clinician, or as an administrator, people constantly put other people ahead of themselves.
“You get to see that so much in health care. That fills your cup up and makes you ask, ‘How can I help you? How can I be of service?’”

Fishing, Football, and Fast Cars
There’s something powerful about a woman pursuing her passions— especially when those interests break stereotypes and push boundaries.
Whether on the water, in the stadium, or behind the wheel of a high-performance car, these women show us that following your passion can be empowering.

Amber Haynes
Owner, McKenna Quinn
Feature Fiesta
Amber Haynes’s love for fishing began as a family affair. “My father took me everywhere,” she recalls. “We spent a lot of time fishing and duck hunting along the coasts of Mexico, Costa Rica, Florida, and across the U.S.” For Haynes, time spent outdoors with her family is precious. It’s a legacy that spans two generations and fills her with pride.
Haynes believes fishing is for anyone who enjoys being in nature. “Getting started is as simple as obtaining a fishing license and booking a trip with a guide or going with a friend,” she advises. Many local fishing shops are well-connected with guides who can show you the ropes and take you to the best spots. This area has ample opportunities to fish in San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Boerne, Texas.
While the sport has traditionally been maledominated, Haynes notes that the landscape is evolving. “We’re seeing more attention given to women in outdoor activities. The more we support and create opportunities for women, the more natural it becomes to see women fishing or hunting,” she says.
Her passion for the sport led her to open a store, McKenna Quinn, 2017, specializing in women’s
hunting and fishing apparel. But that’s not all—Haynes also organizes women-focused trips, whether it’s a “cast and blast” day of fishing in the morning and bird hunting in the afternoon or dedicated fishing adventures across Texas and the U.S. “I wanted to build a community where women encourage and support each other in outdoor activities—whether on the water or in the field,” says Haynes. “Being outdoors is healing. It boosts our confidence and gives us a sense of accomplishment.”
Haynes’s experience ranges from shallow-water bonefishing and deep-sea fishing for marlin or tuna to river-based fly fishing. Her community is grounded in respect for nature. “Spending time outdoors fosters a desire to protect and steward the landscape. I want my daughters to be able to take their children hunting and fishing, just like I get to take them,” she shares.
For beginners, Haynes recommends experimenting with different casting rods under the guidance of a professional. She also reminds newcomers to wear comfortable, flexible clothing, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.
Jennifer West
President of The Alamo Area Browns Backers Football Club
Feature Fiesta
Just as Haynes finds strength in connecting with nature, Jennifer West finds her sense of community in something different—football.
As president of The Alamo Area Browns Backers Football Club, Jennifer West’s dedication to the Cleveland Browns runs deep. Growing up in Ohio, where football is treated with near-religious fervor, her connection to the team feels almost inevitable. “I grew up watching the Cleveland Browns on Sundays with my dad. It was his thing, but together, we created memories of some great moments,” West shares fondly.
West moved to Texas the same year the Browns relocated and became the Baltimore Ravens. The void left by her team led her to step back from watching football. But a few years later, driving past the Fox and Hound in San Antonio, she noticed a crowd proudly sporting Cleveland Browns gear. Intrigued, she stopped in—and instantly felt at home. "I walked into what felt like a tribe that feeds my soul—rooting for the Browns," she says. “It’s great to watch the game with people who share your passion for football.”
The Alamo Area Browns Backers group, founded in 1985, has been a staple for Cleveland fans in San Antonio. West became president in 2023, leading a group that gathers regularly at Little Woodrow's
in Stone Oak, attracting 80 to 140 fans per game. Many members still hold season tickets in Cleveland and even travel back to watch games live while their satellite club in Texas cheers them on.
“What I love about the Browns is that we won in the ’60s before I was born, but we haven’t had a championship since then. Yet, there’s always that hope for a winning season,” West notes, her optimism unwavering. Her favorite player? Nick Chubb, the running back powerhouse who consistently breaks through defensive lines.
When asked what it takes to be a true football fanatic, West’s answer is simple: loyalty. "You have to stand by your team, win or lose. The Pittsburgh Steelers are our biggest rival, and that rivalry makes it even more fun," she adds with a smile. For women who feel intimidated by the sport, West encourages them to join a club centered around their favorite team. “It’s a great way to socialize and learn the game in a supportive environment.”
Those interested in joining the Alamo Area Browns Backers Club can visit their website for details on membership and events. “We’re an inclusive group,” West emphasizes, “with members of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.”
Beth Brunton
Prestige Motor Sports
While Jennifer West finds her thrill in the roar of a stadium crowd, Beth Brunton prefers the roar of a finely tuned engine. For Brunton, high-performance vehicles aren’t just toys—they’re a statement of independence and empowerment.
Beth Brunton, a native of South Texas, never anticipated a life filled with global adventures, a family of two daughters, and a passion for exotic cars. For Brunton, high-performance luxury vehicles are more than just a hobby — they’re a lifestyle, a thrill, and a way to inspire other women to take control, both behind the wheel and in life.
Feature Fiesta
Brunton's journey into the world of exotics began when she and her husband, Ben, both 22 at the time, lived in England and won a Porsche 911 Targa. "To bring the car home, we had to take driving courses just to get insured!" Brunton recalls. "From then on, I was hooked. I promised myself that one day I’d own a car like this, and soon enough, our dream came true with a garage full of exotics." (Exotics refers to highperformance, luxury cars.)
For Brunton, it’s all about the speed. "I’m a huge Formula One fan," she says. "My husband, Ben, and I have been attending races for years, especially at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The adrenaline, the precision — it’s unmatched!" While most admire exotic cars for their beauty, Brunton values the performance dynamics that make each one unique. "The adrenaline rush is second to none."
Brunton currently drives a Porsche 911 Turbo S in Carmine Red, but it’s about more than the car — it’s the experience and freedom it provides. "These cars are quick — you need focus. They can get away from you if you’re not careful," she says. Her expertise was proven when she became the only female driver to win the Ride and Drive event hosted by Prestige Motorsports, an exotic car social club and car dealership at 9711 Plymouth Road, owned by
Brunton’s message to women? Don’t be intimidated — start educating yourself and embrace the journey. "Bring your kids to Prestige Motorsports and let them dream about driving one someday," she says. "Confidence comes from knowing you can own, drive, and master these incredible machines. Educate yourself, know what you’re talking about, and you’ll be just fine in this so-called ‘man’s world.’"
Prestige Sports offers various benefits to its members and hosts events for women, from paint-and-sip nights to charcuterie board classes and fashion shows. "There’s something for everyone, whether you’re storing your vehicle, attending events, or trying out the Formula One simulator," Brunton adds.
Brunton’s mission is to encourage female involvement. "We’re not just pretty passengers — we’re drivers too. Whether you want a Lamborghini or a Bentley, find what excites you and own it!"
These women remind us that pursuing your passions is about breaking barriers, building communities, and inspiring others. Whether casting a line, cheering from the sidelines, or speeding down the highway, don’t let anything stand in the way of your passion.

Ashley Goforth
By Michelle Vasquez | Photography by Suzanne Pack Advocating for Others
Ashley Goforth, a junior at the University of Texas at Austin, exudes a remarkable level of poise and self-assurance, but this was not always the case. Her journey is a testament to resilience, confidence, and an unwavering drive to push beyond perceived limitations, significantly shaped by her experience with dyslexia.
Diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade, Ashley faced significant challenges in her education and self-confidence. While her friends attended gifted and talented classes, she was in a special class for dyslexia, which made her feel isolated. "I thought I couldn't be as smart as my peers and that I was never going to do as well as them," she recalls.
Her turning point came in middle school when her brother encouraged her to take advanced classes. Initially hesitant, Ashley excelled in these challenging courses, discovering her untapped potential. "I don’t think I would have done well unless I was pushed outside my comfort zone," she reflects. Her brother's encouragement to “go for it” was crucial, inspiring her to pursue new heights of achievement.
In high school, Ashley's diligence paid off. She was in the top 6% of her class, a revelation that significantly boosted her confidence. She joined cross country and participated in a business incubator program, where she helped create "Gifting Back," a nonprofit that monetizes donated unused and unwanted gift cards to support local charities combating food insecurity. This experience pushed her to try things she had been intimidated by, particularly public speaking and solidified her interest in business while igniting a competitive spirit.
Ashley majors in public relations at UT Austin with a minor in business. She is active as part of the Potential Member Outreach Committee for the Alpha Phi sorority and Co-director of UT Student Government’s Disabilities Inclusion Agency. Ashley's commitment to disability advocacy is unwavering and began in high school as Vice President of the Unified Club. “I loved Unified because our goal was to include all high school students, regardless of disability, in activities, such as football games and after-school socializing. We even started a Unified Track Team.”
Her current goals are "Increasing awareness and acceptance of the disabled community, providing community and safe spaces for disabled students, and influencing university legislation for better accessibility.” Her own experiences with dyslexia have shaped how she sees and engages with the world, and she wants to make a difference in her community through advocacy.
Additionally, she has been selected as a University of Texas College Scholar, an honor given to those with 60 credit hours or more and the highest GPAs in each college across campus. She is involved with Texas Young Life, Reformed University Fellowship, and Women Communicators of Austin.
Ashley has landed prestigious internships with the H.E. Butt Foundation and H-E-B Own Brand, where she investigates opportunities for brand growth. She credits her family for her drive and values. “They always encouraged me to be the best version of myself and try my best without comparing myself to others,” she says.
Her mother, a military spouse who recently started a college admission consulting business, inspires Ashley with her resilience and pursuit of dreams. Her father’s emphasis on hard work and her brother’s role modeling have also been significant influences. Ashley is also quick to acknowledge her supervisor and mentors at H-E-B, who have been incredibly supportive throughout her internship.
Looking ahead, Ashley plans to study in Barcelona, Spain, this spring, intern in LA or New York, and eventually work for a PR firm. She is eager to challenge herself and embrace new opportunities. "I’m only 20 years old; the world is my oyster," she confidently states, expressing excitement about the endless possibilities ahead.
Ashley's story is one of overcoming adversity and striving for excellence. Her experiences with dyslexia, coupled with the support of her family, have shaped her into a determined and compassionate individual poised for future success.
Brian Strange
Balancing Life, Family, and the Pursuit of Happiness
By
Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran
When you talk to Brian Strange, you can’t help but marvel at his balance between family, work, civic engagement, health and fitness, and musicianship and songwriting. While managing all these dimensions might seem exhausting, it’s just a typical day for Brian. Making memories for his family or his clients’ families is what Brian Strange does best.
Brian, the oldest of three siblings, is the President and CEO of Don Strange of Texas, an off-premise and event catering business founded by his grandparents. From a young age, Brian worked in the family business, learning his father's philosophy of never turning down a request and always pushing the boundaries to create memorable moments for guests.
Given the intensity of the family business, Brian initially turned to golf for health and fitness. However, his wife Shanan encouraged him to find an activity that included their young family of three children. After some thought, Brian discovered a passion for songwriting and music.
Brian embraced this new hobby and formed a family band with his kids—Emily, Austin, and Jake. They traveled throughout Texas, playing at events and opening for other performers. Brian's songwriting talent soon touched the hearts of family members, veterans, and other listeners.
One of Brian’s peak moments came in 2003 when he performed a song he wrote called "Coming Home." The song honors the loved ones left behind when someone goes off to fight in a war. The song resonated deeply, earning him a standing ovation. Brian reflects that these family memories would never have been created if he had continued to play golf.
According to Brian, “Finding that balance between family, work, and hobbies has always been a lifelong mission. Once you're in the hospitality business, the love of caring for people and making them feel happy and cared for becomes an internal motivation that's just part of my DNA.”
Brian’s proudest moments include marrying his wife and the birth of his children. “Watching my kids grow up is a heartfelt, wonderful feeling. The fun part about our industry is that you get to see and do so much, but really, it’s about the basics of love, family, friends, and sharing experiences.”
Brian credits his immediate family and his work family for keeping him motivated. “Watching my kids grow up to be wonderful, responsible adults is fun. My daughter Emily is married and lives in Dallas. My oldest son, Austin, and his wife live in Lubbock, and Jake, who is 25, lives here in San Antonio.”
Working in a family business means that many of Brian’s colleagues feel like family, even if they’re not blood-related. “The cohesiveness, nurturing, and fun make family everything.”
Whether playing music gigs with his sons or watching a bald eagle in the New Mexico valley with his daughter, every moment counts for Brian. “When I write a tune that people clap or dance to, it’s an original thought and rhythm that I created, and that’s very rewarding.”
Brian is also deeply involved in the Rotary Club of San Antonio, where he is a past president and has served on the board. “Rotary is all about serving, and our motto is ‘service above self.’ We’ve helped the club raise money for the Diploma Plus program and supported organizations like the Alamo Trust. Our company considers itself an ambassador to San Antonio and Texas.”
With a business history dating back to 1952, Don Strange of Texas is now 72 years old and continues to grow. Brian emphasizes the importance of supporting non-profits and fostering community. “I love what I do, and I love my life. I’m proud of my business and community involvement and always strive to do more. In our industry, the sky’s the limit, and the possibilities are endless.”

Spice Up Your Style: The Magic of Accessories
By Owner/Stylist, Edie O'Brien | ediestyles.com
Accessories are often considered the finishing touch to any outfit, but their importance goes far beyond merely completing a look. These small but significant additions can transform an ensemble, allowing individuals to express their personal style, enhance their appearance, and add versatility to their wardrobe. From statement pieces to subtle accents, accessories have the power to elevate an outfit, making them an essential part of fashion.
Expressing Personal Style
One of the most significant advantages of wearing accessories is their ability to convey personal style. While clothing serves as the foundation of an outfit, accessories allow individuals to showcase their unique taste and personality. Whether it’s a bold necklace, a vintage brooch, or a colorful scarf, these pieces offer a way to express individuality. For instance, someone who enjoys a bohemian style might opt for layered necklaces and bracelets with earthy tones, while a person with a minimalist aesthetic might choose simple, geometric jewelry in silver or gold.
Accessories provide a platform for creativity, enabling people to experiment with different styles without committing to a complete wardrobe overhaul. This flexibility allows individuals to stay current with fashion trends, incorporating new styles through accessories while maintaining their core wardrobe pieces.
Enhancing Appearance
Accessories play a crucial role in enhancing an individual's appearance by drawing attention to specific features and complementing the overall outfit. A well-chosen accessory can highlight the face, accentuate the waist, or add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral ensemble. For example, earrings can draw attention to the face and highlight a hairstyle, while a belt can define the waist and create a more flattering silhouette.
Color is another powerful tool in the realm of accessories. A brightly colored bag or pair of shoes can add vibrancy to a monochrome outfit, making it more eye-catching and dynamic. Additionally, accessories can be used to balance proportions; a long necklace can elongate the torso, while a wide-brimmed hat can add width to the shoulders.
Versatility and Adaptability
One of the most practical benefits of accessories is their ability to add versatility to a wardrobe. By mixing and matching different accessories, a single outfit can be transformed into multiple looks suitable for various occasions. This adaptability makes accessories a cost-effective way to refresh a wardrobe without the need for constant new clothing purchases.
For example, a simple black dress can be styled for a daytime look with a casual tote bag and flat sandals, then transformed into an evening outfit with the addition of high heels, a clutch, and statement jewelry. This versatility extends to work attire as well; a business suit can be personalized with a silk scarf or a stylish watch, allowing individuals to transition seamlessly from office meetings to after-work events.
Cultural and Symbolic Significance
Accessories also hold cultural and symbolic significance, often serving as markers of identity, status, or tradition. In many cultures, jewelry and other adornments are used to convey social status or marital status, such as wedding bands or ceremonial necklaces. These accessories not only enhance an outfit but also communicate important cultural messages and values.
“An
outfit without accessories is like a meal without spices. It's still good, but with them, it becomes a feast for the senses."
~Edie
In fashion, some accessories have been used to symbolize luxury and wealth. Designer handbags, watches, and jewelry often serve as status symbols, signifying an individual's success or affiliation with certain social circles. However, the democratization of fashion has allowed people from all walks of life to access stylish accessories, enabling everyone to participate in this form of self-expression.
FASHION
Seasonal Adaptation
Accessories provide a practical way to adapt an outfit to different seasons. During the colder months, scarves, hats, and gloves not only add warmth but also serve as stylish additions to winter attire. In the summer, sunglasses, hats, and lightweight jewelry can enhance an outfit while providing protection from the sun.
By incorporating seasonal accessories, individuals can stay comfortable and stylish throughout the year. These items allow for easy adaptation to changing weather conditions, ensuring that fashion remains functional as well as fashionable.
Simply put, accessories are an integral part of fashion, offering a myriad of benefits that go beyond mere decoration. They allow individuals to express their personal style, enhance their appearance, and add versatility to their wardrobe. With the ability to convey cultural significance and adapt to different seasons, accessories play a vital role in the world of fashion. By thoughtfully incorporating accessories into their outfits, individuals can elevate their style, making a lasting impression wherever they go.

Kate Rogers Has A Mission — Remember the Alamo!
By Lainey Berkus
Photography by Suzanne Pack
Let me begin my column with a brief history lesson.
The Alamo is the site of a crucial battle during Texas’s bid for independence from Mexico. In search of opportunity, American settlers moved west into the land we now call Texas. In 1835, a revolution in lower Mexico spread into Mexican Texas. Many Settlers joined the revolution and helped blaze a trail for Texas Independence. The Mexican army under Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio on February 23, 1836, and after a 13-day siege and battle, the fort fell on March 6, with all 189 defenders losing their lives. Many of these male soldiers, medics, and military personnel are remembered for their bravery as they fought on this sacred battle site, which is now frequented by 1.6 million visitors eager to learn more about the history of the Alamo.
You might not know that many notable and courageous women were also present during the Battle of the Alamo. They nursed and fed the soldiers, comforted their husbands, protected their children, and were sages to the military leaders making life-and-death decisions.
How did these steadfast women of the Alamo survive the rugged and demanding times in the 1800s, shaped by the challenges of nature, exploration, and settlement? I know just the woman to ask.
Fast forward to 2024, and another female pioneer is working hard to preserve the Alamo’s legacy for future generations. Meet Kate Rogers, MPA, Ed.D, the Alamo Trust Inc Executive Director. Kate oversees The Alamo Plan, a pivotal effort in preserving and revitalizing Texas’s top tourist destination, the Alamo. This extensive project is structured around preserving the 300-year-old Church and Long Barrack, reclaiming the original mission site and battlefield footprint, and establishing a state-of-theart Visitor Center and Museum. The vision for the Alamo District encompasses Alamo Plaza, Plaza de Valero, the Paseo del Alamo, and more, merging seamlessly with the River Walk. The new museum, set for a grand opening in 2027, will offer a comprehensive narrative of the Alamo’s history dating back to the early 1700s.
Q: How did women carry their necessities?
“Women played crucial roles in this frontier society, often shouldering the responsibilities traditionally associated with men due to the absence of male family members who were away at war or engaged in other duties. As they agitated the rugged terrain, managed household affairs, or found themselves in battle, they relied on a handbag, not as an accessory but as an essential tool for their daily lives. At first, the frontier ladies would sew multiplesize pockets into their clothing to hold necessities. As
the times grew more challenging and dangerous, these women relied on hunting bags, haversacks, and reticules to navigate and thrive.”
Q: What were these bags like?
“One of the most notable types of handbags used by frontier women was the hunting bag. These bags were a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of women who took charge of defending their homes and providing for their families during times of conflict or absence. They were made from durable cloth or animal skins, utilitarian in design, reflecting the practical needs of survival in a primitive world. These bags would carry food items and medical supplies. Hanging outside the bag were bullet bags, measuring tools, and powder horns, essential for ammunition and firearm maintenance. Tools included a powder horn, a powder measure made out of a deer antler for one shot, a small horsehair brush in case the powder got damp, and a pick for clearing out a vent hole on the musket. Fire-making kits, including tinderboxes with charred cloth and plant fibers, flints, and steels, provided the means to start fires for warmth, cooking, and protection”.
“Beyond weaponry and survival tools, hunting bags also contained basic remedies for injuries or illnesses, highlighting frontier women's self-sufficiency and medical knowledge. These remedies, often derived from local plants and traditional methods, were crucial for addressing health issues in remote frontier settlements”.
“Another type of handbag used was the haversack, also known as the field pack, a general-purpose bag. These bags were versatile and practical, designed to be worn over the shoulder to carry supplies and rations needed for daily life. Made from white linen or sturdy material, haversacks were worn over one shoulder and were essential for gathering food, carrying water, and transporting essential items during travel or exploration. You might say this bag turned into the popular crossbody bag used today”.
“The reticule also had a place in frontier fashion and functionality. Initially, this bag met with controversy due to its resemblance to undergarments, and there was the perception that carrying items in bags was a masculine habit. However, reticules quickly became popular accessories, originally made with simple fabrics to carry money, fans, handkerchiefs, rouge, and playing cards. Today, the reticules are considered the precursor to the modern handbag”.

Six Months Later...Resolutions and Results
By Bill Murphy, MD, Medical Director, Turquoise Springs Medical Spa
“Change won’t happen overnight. It takes setting a goal and deciding on a reasonable timeline and one where you will commit to small improvements each week toward a goal.” This was written six months ago in an article titled “Give Us 3 Months……We Will Give You Ten Years.”
Every person has desires, wants, needs, and goals. I have clients ask daily for help with making changes to improve their health, reduce body mass, improve body shape, improve skin health, and for help to look younger, less tired, and invigorated.
It is professionally rewarding to see the excitement in a person’s eyes as progress is made. Several agreed to let me share their journey and the three-month results. I am honored when a client trusts me to care for her, but even more when she wishes to tell others.
Client A works 50-60 hours per week in health care and nurtures her family, including children, grandchildren, and husband. She tries to eat healthy food on the run, manages to squeeze in a trip to the gym three to four times a week, and rarely takes a short vacation to regroup and rest. When we talked, she stated she felt older than 62 years. She admitted to occasionally having Botox injections for her face. Her skincare routine was bar soap and a skin moisturizer. We discussed her goals and devised a plan. I urged better dietary habits, preparing healthy snacks to take with her, and less dependence on fast food. Our nutrition program for her included a weekly weigh-in on our InBody 570 body analyzer and a weekly dose of the GLP-1 agonist, semaglutide. She started four oral supplements to improve energy, strengthen her immune system, and improve heart health. Our aesthetician designed a custom skincare routine for morning and evening with our medical-grade topicals made without chemicals or unnatural additives.
We treated her face and neck to improve discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, and redness from sun damage with light and laser energy. She had three IPL (intense pulsed light) and three Laser Genesis (1064 wavelength laser) to her face and neck. Secret RF (micro-needling with RF heat) was used to restore skin laxity, enhance collagen and elastin production, and tighten the face and neck skin. Hyaluronic Gel filler was used in the temples, mid-face, and lips to replace lost volume. Her blood was used to make PRF-gel or EZ Gel for injection under the eyes for volume loss and eye bags. The neuro-modulator Botox was used to decrease wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. Her next skin treatment will be with our Secret DUO machine, which combines micro-needling/RF with an Erbium 1540 laser for nonablative skin resurfacing. This device has no downtime to interfere with her busy schedule.
Fat pockets were diminished with the Trusculpt iD device. Additional body contouring was accomplished by stimulating muscle in the arms, stomach, buttocks, and legs with our Trusculpt Flex machine to tone and shape. She says she feels better has more energy, and her friends and family tell her she looks great!
The other pictures are of a 79-year-young client B, who wished to look ten years younger. She told me a stranger at the airport asked if she was from Hollywood. I think she looks 59 rather than the new 69, but there was no extra charge for the additional decade. She is thrilled with the changes she has made!
If you wish to have a consultation, call Stephanie or Emily at 210-253-3313 or 210-269-8480.

The Art of Lighting
By Theresa Naramore of Twin Sisters Interiors
Photography Lauren Keller with LRES Marketing
Early in our interior design career, we had a client break down and cry in a lighting showroom. It was the first and only time that happened, but we sympathized with her. Selecting lighting for a home can be an intimidating task because there are seemingly limitless styles, sizes, and finishes. Whether building a home, remodeling or simply updating a room, lighting plays a crucial role in the design. If you are prepared, lighting decisions will not be overwhelming and can be quite fun! Here are some considerations to help with lighting choices.
Recessed can lights, under cabinet lighting, in-cabinet lighting, and decorative pendant lights
LED mirror, LED strip lighting in shelving, decorative chandelier, and recessed can lights
1.Types of Lighting - consider the function of lighting in your space. Thoughtful design includes a combination of:
• Ambient - general lighting for overall room illumination, such as recessed can lighting.
• Task-specific lighting - illuminating certain areas and eliminating shadows in those spaces. Examples include under-cabinet lighting, lighted mirrors, and table lamps.
• Decorative- chandeliers and fixtures that set the mood and tone and provide a focal point.
2.Aesthetics - consider the role lighting can play in your home.
• Well-designed lighting can set the tone of a space and make it feel larger or cozier, formal or casual, high-drama or low-key. Your personality can shine through your lighting choices. Determine what statement you want your space to make.
• Light fixtures can emphasize architectural features and draw attention to art or other focal points. Think about which features you would like to highlight.
3.Psychological Impact - Consider the significance of the lighting in your room.
• Proper lighting improves mood and affects our circadian rhythm, influencing health and our sleep patterns.
• Color temperature is the numerical value for measuring color on a warm to cool spectrum, ranging from 1000k-10000k. Generally, 27003000k bulbs provide soft, warm, and pleasing light for homes. Warm lighting creates a cozy and inviting feel, while cool lighting makes a room feel vibrant and productive.
4.Energy efficiency - consider the ease and efficiency of modern lighting options.
• Smart lighting - lighting can be integrated with smart home systems, allowing for automation, energy efficiency, and ease of effort.
• LED lighting - Modern LED lighting is longlasting and energy-efficient.
• Technological advancements- recent technological innovations enhance the adaptability and functionality of lighting systems throughout a home.
Although lighting plays a pivotal role in interior design, selecting fixtures for your home should not be overwhelming. With a bit of thoughtful preparation, you can transform your space by adding just the right lighting.
Photos from our recently completed project in Cordillera Ranch highlight thoughtful lighting selections throughout the home. If you need help transforming your home, enlist the help of a designer.

I strive to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for my patients, ensuring that they feel relaxed and at ease during their visits. I also place a strong emphasis on patient education, taking the time to thoroughly explain treatment options and answer any questions or concerns that may arise. My dedication to excellence, patient-centered approach, and commitment to ongoing education and innovation are what truly set my dental practice apart from others in San Antonio.
Many people elected to go without dental care during Covid. Have you seen an increase in oral health issues because of that delay in preventative services?
Unfortunately, I have. Some people are only now coming back to see dentists so there has been an increase in cavities and gum disease. Luckily, we have both LANAP and Gemini EVO™ Laser in our office. LANAP stands for "laser-assisted new attachment procedure", and it's a minimally invasive laser treatment for gum disease and other periodontal issues. The procedure uses a special dental laser called the PerioLase® MVP-7 to remove infected tissue around the teeth while leaving healthy tissue intact. This triggers the body's natural healing response, which can help regrow lost bone and gum tissue, prevent gum recession, and eliminate bacteria.

Jennings & Ratliff Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry
Dr. Sonia R. Jennings
What best describes the care you provide?
I provide comprehensive care that focuses on the aesthetics, health, and function of each smile, drawing from my Pankey Institute training. With state-of-the-art digital technologies, photography, and scans, I deliver customized patient experiences. My practice philosophy is rooted in offering high-quality care, backed by over 25 years of experience in private practice.
What about dentistry do you want your patients to know?
The mouth is the gateway to overall health. Without a healthy mouth, your entire body can be affected. Dentists also often see patients more frequently than other healthcare professionals, making us key providers in identifying potential health issues and promoting preventive care.
What warning signs should people be aware of that require a visit to the dentist?
Signs like teeth grinding (bruxism), chipped teeth, receding gums, and jaw pain can be symptoms of other systemic health issues. If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to discuss them with your dentist to evaluate the underlying cause. Many of these symptoms can be related to sleep-disordered breathing.
What new treatment options are you excited about?
After years of treating TMJ disorders, the use of neurotoxin to relieve pain is showing promising results. Our patients also have preferred access to aesthetic services offered in our office by DermaVida Wellness™, which include Botox and filler treatments, radiofrequency microneedling, redlight therapies, and laser treatments.

Jesseca Zollars Smith: Owner & President MISSION Day Spa, Esthetician, CE Provider, Educator, Oncology Trained. Jennifer Bertrand Esthetician: Herbalist, Educator. Lori Satter Esthetician: Ayurvedic lifestyle coach, Oncology Trained.
What sets you apart from other Day Spas?
Our spa sets itself apart by creating a haven for people with skin sensitivities, autoimmune issues, and cancer. Here, they can enjoy normalcy and be touched without fear of products causing irritation or burning. We specialize in group services such as spa parties and individual services that integrate Ayurvedic principles. From the moment our guests walk in, they sense they are about to experience something special. From the tranquil aromatic 'welcome towel' handed to them in the lobby specific to their dosha to their customized spa treatment, our practitioners' welltrained hands and the spa's non-pretentious whimsical touches are sure to put them instantly at ease.
Why are Ayurvedic principles important in spa treatments when working with cancer survivors?
Ayurvedic principles are important in spa treatments for cancer survivors because they emphasize the deep interconnectedness between the human body and the universe.
By understanding and applying these principles, we can create a spa environment that promotes comfort, wellness, and normalcy for our clients while supporting their overall health and well-being. Ayurveda’s holistic approach aligns with our goal of providing a nurturing space for individuals undergoing cancer treatment, allowing us to offer personalized care tailored to their specific needs
Who has influenced you the most in your life or career, and why? My late mother, Orpha. Even while battling cancer herself, her incredible strength and positive outlook inspired me to fulfill my promise to her by helping and investing in others. Dr. Kennamer, a retired Professor of Oncology Anesthesiology at MD Anderson, has also mentored me as I build MISSION Day Spa, establishing an oncology-trained spa and franchise focused on wellness.

Alex Altwein From the Ground Up
By Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran
Regarding commercial real estate, Alex Altwein knows how to make deals happen. Starting from the ground up 23 years ago, Altwein has steadily risen through the ranks in a male-dominated industry to her current role as vice president of leasing and marketing at Wade Interests Inc., an integrated commercial real estate development and property management company focused primarily on South and Central Texas. Over the last decade, she has closed more than 250 deals and continues to drive regional growth.
Altwein's journey began at Wade Interests, where she started answering phones while attending the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), gaining firsthand exposure to the business. From there, she transitioned into property management and leasing shopping centers. Eventually, she became a crucial player in closing significant deals.
Along the way, she identified four essential ingredients for success in her field: grit and hard work, cultivating relationships and trust, following through on
commitments, and developing solutions to tenant problems—all while demonstrating the business acumen necessary to create winning deals for all involved. "What I find most rewarding about closing deals is witnessing tenants' projects come together from start to finish," says Altwein.
She emphasizes that completed projects add value to retail buildings and sites while creating vibrant centers that benefit local communities. Altwein is also quick to point out that no one forges their path alone, crediting Richard "Dick" Wade as a mentor early in her career. This relationship continues to this day.
Altwein is involved in every aspect of the process in her current role—from leasing and marketing land tracts to overseeing the nitty-gritty details of construction and tenant build-outs. Her commitment to client relationships is evident in the loyalty of her tenants, many of whom return to her for future projects. "I enjoy and appreciate maintaining positive tenant relationships and supporting their businesses,"
Altwein credits her success to some core principles: building solid relationships with tenants and brokers and staying focused on delivering results. Reflecting on the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry, she explains, "You just go in, get your deals done, and it doesn't matter whether you're male or female. I'm here to get results for the shopping center owner and work directly with brokers to achieve that."
While Altwein makes it seem effortless, the journey has sometimes been challenging. A significant challenge she faced was pouring herself into due diligence and execution of a deal for the better part of a year, only to have it fall through. "I had to learn that you can't win them all, and these deals are extraordinarily complex. You win and lose some, but you must keep moving forward," she says.
For Altwein, the key to long-term success lies in supporting tenants through their build-outs and ensuring they are set up for renewals and future partnerships. Her greatest satisfaction comes from knowing she's contributed to creating thriving businesses that contribute to the economic well-being of the community.
One of her proudest achievements is helping launch CosMc's by McDonald's, a small-format beverage concept featuring classic offerings like the Egg McMuffin. The location at the corner of Potranco and Grossenbacher is a testament to her ability to bring innovative projects to life.
Regarding site visits and supervising build-outs, Altwein is relaxed by the challenges of working in a predominantly male environment. "I just go in, get my deal done, and build connections with everyone on-site. Plus, I don't mind getting dirty, sweating, or walking on hot asphalt or concrete parking lots even if I’m in my heels!" she says.
One of Altwein's biggest motivations is being a role model for her daughter, Ava. "I love taking her to job sites on weekends, showing her how a project transforms from an empty lot into a complete building with tenants," she shares. Altwein believes it's essential to demonstrate that hard work and perseverance can lead to significant accomplishments.
A lesson she hopes her daughter has learned is that you can only win some of them, whether in sports
or business. You must learn from failure, apply your knowledge to the next challenge, and keep moving forward. Altwein is confident that all that learning will pay off.
Altwein's success is rooted in her unwavering determination, sharp business understanding, and the confidence to thrive in environments where she's often the only woman in the room. She's not just comfortable in a male-dominated industry—she excels in it, blending tenacity with a genuine passion for helping businesses grow.
Whether negotiating deals, overseeing construction sites, or forging lasting relationships with clients, Altwein's presence is a powerful reminder that hard work, resilience, and skill can break through any glass ceiling.
With a proven track record and a bright future, Altwein continues to shape the commercial real estate landscape with tenacity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to her clients and community.

Harvesting Success: Reap the Rewards of Your Business Journey
By Linda Ratner RN, MBA, CEPA
Welcome back to our journey through the Value Maturity Index of your company. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and dive into the Harvest stage—where all the hard work pays off and we start seeing some real action. Before we get into that, let's quickly revisit where we've been. We started with the 'Identify' stage, identifying where your business stands and what makes it tick. Then, we moved on to 'Protect' to keep all that good stuff safe from any business boogeymen. Recently, we've been all about 'Building'—ramping up your business’s strengths and expanding into new territories. Great reads for this stage include Scaling Up by Verne Harnish and How to Grow When Markets Don’t by Slywotzky, Wise, and Weber.
Each of these stages has been crucial in beefing up your business’s backbone and prepping it for the big leagues. Speaking of the big leagues, let’s talk about the Harvest stage—this is where things get really exciting. It's where you begin to see the tangible results of your strategy pay off. But let me share something from my playbook: selling my business to a private equity firm. It was a whirlwind, to say the least. Though it was ultimately successful, the transition was more challenging than I expected, and frankly, I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was for what came during and after the deal.
That experience was a real eye-opener for me, and it's why I'm so driven to ensure you have a smoother ride. With the hard-earned lessons from my story and the strategies we've put in place from the start of this series, you're in a much better position to succeed and, indeed, thrive when it's time to harvest.
Now, let’s talk about how we can ensure you're fully prepared to sell your business and get an excellent outcome that leaves no regrets on the table.
Preparing for the Harvest
Before you even think about ringing the bell on a sale or transition, there’s plenty to tidy up to ensure you get the best deal. Here’s how we do it:
-Financial Housekeeping: First, let's get those books in order. When entering the Harvest phase, clean, clear, and up-to-date financials are non-negotiable. We’ll comb through everything to ensure your financial transparency can withstand the keenest scrutiny.
-Market Positioning: How does your business stack up against the competition? We'll position your business as a leader in its niche, highlighting unique selling propositions that make it an attractive catch for buyers or investors.
-Strategic Enhancements: We’ll pinpoint any last-minute tweaks that can boost your business's value— whether that’s optimizing your operational processes or expanding into new market segments.
Choosing the Right Exit Strategy
Not all exits are created equal. Whether you’re looking at selling, merging, or passing the torch, we’ll find the best fit for your goals:
-Selling to a Third Party: Preparing to sell your business to a third party is a common yet intricate journey, and I’m here to guide you through each twist and turn. Understanding the details of this process is crucial—not just for the sale itself but for the profound impact it can have on your personal life. The terms of the sale, such as the timing of payments, ongoing involvement with the business, and non-compete clauses, can dramatically influence your future lifestyle and financial security. After the sale, your autonomy might be significantly reduced, potentially adding stress as you adapt to new restrictions on
your professional activities and decision-making abilities. I’ve had extensive experience and can share personal stories of successes and challenges, ensuring you're fully equipped to navigate this life-changing move. As a Scaling Up and Business Value advisor, I help clients explore and understand all available exit options. This gives them the upper hand and ensures that they know exactly what to expect every step of the way. This comprehensive
- Merging: Should merging be your chosen path, we'll connect you with an exceptional investment banker or broker who specializes in aligning businesses with complementary strengths and philosophies. This strategic matchmaking ensures a smooth integration, maximizing the potential benefits and synergies from the union. Family Succession or Employee Buyout: For those looking to keep the business in the family or with employees who have helped build it, we’ll lay the groundwork for a smooth transition that honors your legacy.
- Family Succession or Employee Buyout: For those planning to keep the business within the family or transition it to employees who have been integral to its success, I focus on orchestrating a seamless transition that honors your legacy while securing the business’s future. I dedicate time to work closely with the current owner and the prospective successors to ensure thorough understanding and alignment on both sides. This dual-focused approach helps maintain continuity, minimize operational disruptions, and facilitate a smooth handover. By preparing both parties, we ensure that the values and vision that have guided the business continue to do so, and the transition becomes a period of positive evolution rather than uncertainty.
Navigating the Sale Process
Selling a business can be emotional and taxing. Here’s how I’ll help you smooth out the bumps:
- Valuation and Negotiations: Armed with a deep understanding of your business’s worth, we'll navigate negotiations confidently, ensuring you receive fair value. Our negotiation team includes you, legal experts, wealth advisors, and your business broker or investment banker—all aligned with your goals. This
integrated approach ensures that everyone is communicating effectively, reducing silos and fostering a unified strategy.
- Legal and Tax Considerations: We'll guide you through the legal maze and tax implications with the help of top-notch attorneys and CPAs. This team works cohesively to ensure that all legal and financial aspects are handled meticulously, protecting your interests and simplifying the complexities of the process.
- Post-Sale Transition: As my experience taught me, the deal isn’t done at the sale. We’ll plan for what comes next, ensuring you transition smoothly into your next chapter, whatever that may be. Our comprehensive team approach, including legal, wealth advisors, and CPAs, supports you through this transition, preparing you for the changes ahead and ensuring a seamless shift into your new reality.
Navigating the Harvest stage is not just about reaping the financial benefits of your hard work; it's about strategically transitioning into a new phase of your life or career with confidence and security. With the right preparation and a dedicated team of experts by your side —I ensure that every aspect of the sale is handled meticulously and aligned with your longterm goals. This is more than a transaction—it’s a transformation. I'm here to smooth out the bumps along the way, help you navigate the complexities of the sale, and ensure you step into your next chapter with a solid plan and peace of mind.
If you're considering this pivotal move, don’t go it alone. Leverage my experience and expertise to maximize your rewards and minimize stress. Let’s ensure your business legacy is honored and your financial future is secure. Reach out today to discuss how I can support your successful journey from Scaling through the Harvest stage and beyond.

Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills:
A Beacon of Health and Healing in San Antonio's Fastest-Growing Community
Westover Hills, a neighborhood at the forefront of San Antonio’s rapid expansion, is experiencing a transformation few could have predicted. Over the past decade, it has become one of the city’s most dynamic and fastest-growing areas, characterized by booming residential developments, an influx of businesses, and a continually increasing population. However, this growth has highlighted an urgent need: access to high-quality healthcare services that can keep pace with the demands of this vibrant community.
As Westover Hills expands, the existing healthcare infrastructure has become significantly strained. Service gaps have become evident, and the pressure on medical resources is growing. Westover Hills is one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in San Antonio. As the population increases, the demand for healthcare services rises. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and local planning authorities often show significant year-over-year population growth, which strains existing healthcare facilities.
The rapid residential and commercial development in Westover Hills often outpaces the expansion of healthcare facilities. According to data from CMS, the number of healthcare providers, hospital beds, and medical services available in the area compared to the growing population reveals insufficient capacity to meet demand, leading to gaps in service availability.
Higher healthcare utilization rates, especially in primary care, emergency services, and specialized medical services, can indicate a mismatch between supply and demand. Health department statistics and hospital utilization data often show rising rates of hospital admissions, ER visits, and outpatient services, further pressuring existing resources.
Recognizing this challenge, Methodist Healthcare is stepping forward to meet it head-on with the development of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills, a state-of-the-art facility set to open in November of 2024.
Meeting the Growing Healthcare Demands of West San Antonio
For over 60 years, Methodist Healthcare has been a pinnacle of health and wellness from the Hill Country to South Texas. Driven by its mission of "Serving Humanity to Honor God," the healthcare system has consistently worked to enhance the well-being of the communities it serves. As the Westover Hills area experiences unprecedented growth, Methodist Healthcare is expanding its reach to ensure that this rapidly growing neighborhood has access to the comprehensive healthcare it needs.
Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills will be Methodist Healthcare’s 11th facility, marking a significant milestone for Methodist Healthcare. The grand opening of this new facility represents the largest investment by the healthcare system in recent years and is the first green-field built by Methodist Healthcare since 2008. Strategically located near the Highway 151 and Loop 1604 corridor, the hospital is perfectly positioned to serve the expanding population of West San Antonio and surrounding areas.
A State-of-the-Art Facility Tailored to Community Needs
Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills is being built as a center of healthcare excellence, offering cuttingedge, expert medical services in an environment that
promotes healing, comfort, and well-being spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
The 54-bed acute-care hospital spans 180,000 square feet and houses a wide range of services, including general surgery, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), emergency care, labor and delivery, cardiology, and gastroenterology services. With the capacity to expand to six floors and 50,000 square feet of shelled space available for immediate growth, the hospital is built with the future in mind. The hospital is complemented by a four-story medical office building which will offer specialty and primary care services.
Megan Cool Amalakuhan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills, emphasizes the importance of this new facility to the community. “Westover Hills is growing at an extraordinary rate, and with that growth comes the responsibility to provide healthcare that is not only comprehensive but also accessible,” she says. “Our goal is to ensure every resident has access to the care they need right here in their community.”
The hospital campus is designed with patients and their families in mind. A tree-lined drive and walking trails meander through the grounds, providing a serene environment that fosters healing and reflection. A healing garden positioned between the hospital and the medical office building will offer a tranquil space for relaxation and features lighting
and comfortable benches. Inside the hospital, patients and visitors will be greeted by a soothing scent explicitly designed for the facility, a blend of sage, eucalyptus, and honeysuckle, creating a calming atmosphere conducive to healing. The lobby is lined with floor-to-ceiling glass for natural light and encompasses elements of rock and plants. The hospital’s administration team thoughtfully developed the healing elements, proving their dedication to the service and experience that the hospital will offer.
Expanding Emergency Care for a Growing Community
One of the most urgent needs in Westover Hills is access to emergency care. The existing Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills FSER adjacent to the new hospital’s campus has seen a remarkable 22% increase in patient volumes yearly, highlighting the growing demand for emergency services. To better serve the community, the FSER’s emergency care services will officially transition to the new hospital’s emergency department on the morning of the hospital’s opening, providing patients with access to a broader range of services and higher levels of care. “This transition is about more than just expanding our services; it’s about elevating the level of care we can offer,” explains Joe Vasquez, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills. “With access to advanced imaging, diagnostics, and equipment, our team will be able to provide more

comprehensive and timely care to those who need it most.”
The transition from a Free-Standing ER to a hospitalbased ER is a critical step in ensuring community members and area visitors have access to the emergency services they need, when they need them. This expansion allows Methodist Healthcare to continue evolving alongside the community, providing advanced medical care that meets the population's growing demands.
Family Care: A Central Focus at Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills
The Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills team is deeply committed to providing comprehensive
care for families, particularly focusing on women’s and cardiovascular services. These areas are critical in ensuring that the community has access to the highest-quality healthcare, tailored to meet patients’ needs during all stages of life.
Elevating Labor and Delivery Services
As Westover Hills's population grows, so does the demand for specialized labor and delivery services. Recognizing this, Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills will offer exceptional care for mothers and their families. The hospital will feature ten state-of-theart labor and delivery rooms designed to provide a supportive and comfortable environment for one of the most significant moments in a family's life.
Additionally, the hospital will include four private NICU beds and two C-section suites equipped with advanced medical technology to ensure mothers and newborns receive the highest level of care, whether it's a routine delivery or a more complex situation requiring specialized attention.
April Tolson, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills, emphasized the hospital's commitment to family-centered care, stating, "We understand that the birth of a child is one of the most important moments in a family’s life. That’s why we’ve designed our women’s services department to be as supportive and welcoming as possible. Our labor and delivery rooms will be equipped with the latest medical technology, but they’re also designed to be comfortable and inviting so that families can focus on what matters most—welcoming their new baby."
Addressing Cardiovascular Health
Alongside the focus on women’s services, Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills is equally committed to meeting the community's cardiovascular needs. As cardiovascular diseases continue to be a leading health concern, the hospital will house two Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology/EP Labs. These labs are essential for diagnosing and treating heart conditions and providing patients with life-saving procedures close to home.
Including specialized cardiovascular services will ensure the hospital can offer comprehensive care for patients dealing with heart-related issues, from diagnostics to intervention. This is particularly important in a growing community where the demand for such services is on the rise.
"Our team stands ready to serve patients on every step of the wellness journey and looks forward to supporting patients of every generation," Tolson continued. “This commitment to care is at the heart of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills, where the goal is to provide seamless, patient-centered care that addresses the entire family's needs.”
Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills is more than just a healthcare facility; it will be a cornerstone of the Westover Hills community, dedicated to supporting families from the first moments of life through every stage of wellness. The hospital's comprehensive approach to family care will ensure that patients receive the best possible care in a technologically advanced and compassionate setting - committed to fostering a healthier, stronger community for generations to come.
A Commitment to Community-Centered Care
At the core of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills’ mission is a deep commitment to the community it serves. Many of the hospital’s s team members live in West San Antonio, making the hospital not just a healthcare provider but a true neighbor. This community-oriented approach ensures that the hospital remains closely connected to the people it serves, providing care that is both personal and professional.
“We are neighbors caring for neighbors,” Joe Vasquez, CFO, emphasized. “Our team is part of this community. We live here, our families are here, and we are dedicated to ensuring everyone who walks through our doors receives the highest level of care.”
Methodist Healthcare’s Legacy and Vision for the Future
Methodist Healthcare has been a trusted name in South Texas healthcare for over 60 years, beginning
with its first facility in 1963. Since then, the organization has grown into one of San Antonio’s largest and most respected healthcare systems, with over 30 facilities serving 27 counties across South Texas. This partnership has allowed the system to remain deeply connected to the community while also benefiting from the resources and expertise of a national healthcare leader. Since its inception, Methodist Healthcare has contributed over $1.67 billion to community health through direct services, grants, and partnerships. AI Is the Next Step Forward in Early Breast Cancer Detection
By Paul J. Watkins
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about one in eight American women will get breast cancer during her life. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women – skin cancer is first. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women (behind lung cancer). It’s the leading cause of cancer death in the Hispanic population. This is particularly important for the women of San Antonio.
The ongoing battle to bring the number of breast cancer fatalities down has traditionally relied heavily on advancements in technology to allow the detection of breast cancer at increasingly earlier points in the disease process, thereby allowing for better survival rates.
One of the newest such advancements is digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), more commonly known as “3D mammography.” This technology, which is FDA approved and Medicare-reimbursed, allows breast radiologists to achieve earlier, more accurate tumor detection.
Justin E. Boatsman, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained breast radiologist at South Texas Radiology Imaging Centers (STRIC) in San Antonio. He says the practice uses 3D mammography units exclusively, and he explains how 3D mammography differs from digital mammography.
“Digital mammography, or traditional two-D mammography, is basically taking a three-dimensional object – the breast – compressing it, and capturing an image,” he says. “The things that we look for in the breast tend to show up in the image as gray or white, similar to the breast tissue, so we have that one picture to try to find abnormalities of the breast that look similar to the surrounding tissue.
“With a three-D mammogram, instead of taking one straight-on picture, it takes a series of pictures at varying degrees. This approach brings out abnormalities of the breast and helps us distinguish what's normal breast tissue from what's not. Breast cancers can be highly variable in what they look like, so we want to have every tool available to help increase our accuracy and find cancers earlier and smaller, which gives us the best potential outcomes.”
STRIC is promoting the benefits of the 3D imaging technology through its “Cancer Can't Hide” initiative. Now, those benefits are further enhanced by the newest advancement in breast imaging – artificial intelligence. AI technology is being used to assist breast radiologists in reading 3D mammograms and provide even earlier detection of breast cancer by identifying areas of concern that might not be discernable to the human eye.
“Three-D mammography was the most recent step forward,” describes Dr. Boatsman. “AI is the next step. We started using a state-of-the-art version of AI in our practice earlier this year, and it’s proven its effectiveness.
“When you talk about artificial intelligence in mammography, you’re really talking about a complementary tool. As far as we’ve come in detecting breast cancer, there are still areas that are challenging for us. AI helps us in those challenging areas, allowing us to be more confident when we're looking at mammograms and empowering us to find cancers earlier and smaller. Ultimately, that's going to lead to the best outcomes for our patients. In many cases, that includes the ability to utilize less invasive treatments and the realization of improved survival rates.”
Dr. Boatsman says he’s so glad that STRIC is using artificial intelligence to build on the power of 3D mammography. Screening mammography has been proven to save lives, he states, but it only works for the women who are going to STRIC and getting those crucial breast images taken.
“It’s getting close to October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” he concludes. “If you’ve never had a mammogram and you’re over age forty, or if you haven't had one in a long time, this is the time to get it done. So many of the women in our lives take care of others but don't take care of themselves. Today is the right time to schedule an appointment for a mammogram and start taking care of yourself.”

Breast Cancer Diagnosis Leads Bronte Price to ThriveWell's Supportive Diva Community
By Kristina G. Aderhold
Bronte Price's world was upended in November 2019 with a stage II breast cancer diagnosis. While the physical toll of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and a clinical trial were grueling, the emotional effect of feeling like a burden on her husband and daughter weighed even heavier.
Bronte yearned for normalcy and was looking for connection. A flyer from her oncologist's office about ThriveWell Cancer Foundation's Diva&Dude program sparked hope. This free program offers exercise and nutrition specifically designed for cancer patients and survivors. Research shows exercise and proper nutrition can significantly reduce the risk of recurrence.
Becoming a "Diva" in the program was a turning point. Yoga, aqua fit, and group therapy weren't just ordinary activities - they were a lifeline to a supportive community. "We understand each other," Bronte says. "It's a chance to be there for one another, a true brotherhood and sisterhood. The classes and the support group leader, who was also battling breast cancer, helped me confront my depression and anxieties related to doctor's appointments and scans. Talking to others who understood was crucial. If you have to be part of a club because of your cancer diagnosis you’re in the best club to be in.” Sharing experiences with fellow survivors replaced isolation with a sense of belonging.
ThriveWell's impact extends far beyond Bronte's story. Since its inception, they've provided over $11.5 million in financial assistance, alleviating a significant burden for countless patients. Additionally, their Research Program has provided over $850,000 in cancer research funding, fueling the hope for a future free from the disease.
"Our mission," says Erin Ercoline, ThriveWell's Executive Director, "is to ease the burden on adult cancer patients and their families in San Antonio." By addressing financial anxieties and providing vital resources like Diva&Dude, they empower patients like Brontë to focus on recovery, not just survival.
ThriveWell's dedication to research fuels hope for a future free from cancer. Their commitment to patient well-being creates a network of support, reminding individuals like Bronte that they are not alone. Celebrating four years breast cancer-free this year, Bronte embodies what it means to be a true THRIVER.

Mobile Mammography Unit Provides Access to Breast Cancer Screenings
By Gloria Madera, Public Relations Manager for CHRISTUS Health
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about a cancer affecting millions of women in the United States.
One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, and it is the second-deadliest cancer among American women, according to BreastCancer.org.
“Early detection and a healthy lifestyle are the most effective ways to combat the disease,” said Lisa Lopez, mammography program coordinator for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills.
For early detection, new mammogram guidelines set by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends women start getting mammogram screenings at age 40 and every two years until age 74.
“A mammogram is an X-ray image of your breasts,” Lopez said. “During the screening, the breast is pressed in the X-ray machine, and pressure is applied for a few seconds to spread the breast tissue. It may feel uncomfortable, but it’s the best way to get a clear picture of the breast tissue.”
She said one issue some women have when getting their mammograms is access to health care.
Lopez said that CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System aims to provide this service with its state-of-the-art Mobile Mammography Unit (MMU).
“This was a vision we’ve been working on for many years,” Lopez said. “Early detection is so important to help with a patient’s outcome. The ability we now have to offer these life-saving mammograms to people who may not have received one otherwise is incredible.”
The MMU provides screening services using innovative, top-notch technology and access to CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System’s integrated care if further diagnostics or treatment are needed.
“If someone’s mammogram comes back abnormal, that’s when we would send them to our hospital,” Lopez said. “Our team would then go over the next steps and work with our patient to receive their best outcome.”
Some signs and symptoms of breast cancer are:
• A lump in the breast or armpit
• Swelling or thickness in part of the breast
• Irritated and dimpled breast skin
• Flaky or redness of skin in the nipple or breast area
• Excessive pain in the nipple area
• Size or shape of the breast changed
Lopez said about a third of the mammograms provided on the MMU are free to uninsured and underinsured women.
“We are bringing these life-saving services to people right where they are,” she said. “Our goal is to reach as many areas of this region as possible to screen as many people as possible.”
The MMU is outfitted with technology to provide 3D mammograms.
3D mammogram machines create 3D images and standard 2D images for experts to get a thorough look at a patient’s breast tissue.
“Using this technology helps us to get better imaging for our patients,” Lopez said. “It offers many benefits like reducing the need for follow-up imaging, detecting slightly more cancers, and improving cancer detection in dense breast tissue.”
She said the MMU provides about 3,000 mammograms each year. Since it began operating in the fall of 2022, the MMU has made 226 site visits throughout the south Texas region, with more on the schedule for the rest of the year.
Currently, the MMU serves Bexar, Comal, and surrounding counties.
“With the MMU, we’re able to bring the same great care you would receive at our hospital right into the community,” she said. “We continue to enhance the health and wellness of our community.”

25 Years of WINGS Milagros: Celebrating a Legacy of Life-Saving Miracles
By Lustrous Public Relations | Photography by Luis Vazquez Photography
The WINGS legacy began in 1999 when a breast cancer patient, Terri Jones, and her surgeon, Dr. Catherine Safford, came together with a vision: to create a lifeline for uninsured and underinsured women facing Breast Cancer in Central and South Texas. What began as a hopeful idea blossomed into WINGS - Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving, Sharing, Inc., the first and only Texas non-profit providing no-cost, comprehensive Breast Cancer treatment to individuals who must choose between life-saving treatment, or feeding their families.
The anniversary campaign, "25 Years of WINGS Milagros: Miracles for Uninsured Individuals with Breast Cancer," embodies the heart of our mission. WINGS, located in the heart of San Antonio, Texas, celebrates its 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century, WINGS has assisted 18,000+ women living at or below poverty to bridge the gap between detection and access no-cost comprehensive breast cancer care, breaking all financial barriers, providing access to critical lifesaving treatment, educational, transportation, referral, and adjunct resources services.
These miracles are made possible by their dedicated team, a network of physicians, treatment centers, donors, volunteers, and community partners who work relentlessly to ensure everyone receives first-class quality care.

Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness at La Cantera Resort & Spa Offers Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Breast Cancer Patients
By Jennifer Badger
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness Center at La Cantera Resort & Spa is highlighting its WINGS Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM), specifically designed for those with breast cancer whose lymph nodes have been damaged or removed. During October, a percentage of the cost for each massage will be donated to WINGS, a local nonprofit whose mission is to bridge the gap between diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, providing comprehensive breast health services to uninsured women in Central and South Texas.
The protocol was created by Ashley Cameron, a licensed Medical Massage Therapist (MMT) and Certified Decongestion Therapist (CDT) at Loma de Vida. She explains that LDM is often misunderstood as a “light touch massage.” Compared to traditional massages, it employs lighter pressure but has a purpose behind it.
Cameron explains that, like the body’s circulatory system, the lymphatic system has its own vast network of pumps in its own vessels, which lie just underneath the skin's surface. A traditional massage typically goes too deep to benefit the lymphatic system. Lymphatic vessels carry everything from water, cellular waste, and nutrients broken down from ingested food to white blood cells and toxins, collectively called “lymph.” Lymph nodes are considered dump sites for the lymph, and hundreds of nodes exist throughout the body, including clusters in the armpits, sternum, groin, and gut. The goal of lymphatic drainage is to push the lymphatic fluid in a direction that leads to a dump site. Once the lymph is moved to a dump site, it is collected, filtered, and sent for elimination or reabsorption into the body via the spleen, thymus, and other organs that aid in detoxification.
Patients with breast cancer and other cancers may have lymph nodes removed to prevent the cancer’s
spread. Removing those nodes can affect the specific dump site from which they were taken, leading to localized swelling called lymphedema. LDM aims to alleviate that uncomfortable, sometimes painful swelling.
Cameron advises that the lymphatic system releases one and a half liters of fluid from the body daily through sweat and urination – slow processes that occur throughout the day. However, because LDM is considered a decongestant therapy, that process is sped up. “It is like having a stuffy nose, then taking a decongestant, and suddenly you're blowing your nose every five seconds,” she says. “We’re pushing all that lymph to dump sites, and your body is flushing that one and a half liters at a faster rate than your body is used to.”
As a result, massage recipients should be sure to hydrate sufficiently before getting their massage. Cameron says if their bodies don’t have enough water in their system already, they might start to feel their mouth or skin getting dry even during the massage. Cameron recommends drinking half your body weight in ounces daily, especially before LDM.
Besides the lighter touch, Cameron says the difference between LDM and traditional massage is the detailed intake before administering the service. “The first things we ask are which lymph nodes were removed and which are impaired. From there, we get into more detailed information, can start to look at the body as a map and direct lymph flow to the healthy areas.”
Anne Melby, director of spa and recreation at Loma de Vida, emphasizes, “Adequately trained massage therapists understand the higher level of accountability that comes with understanding the body and its triggers, especially for those who have had a port or lymph nodes removed. Six of the 40 massage therapists employed at Loma de Vida have ad-
vanced training in correctly performing the WINGS Lymphatic Drainage Massage.”
While the WINGS LDM was created specifically for breast cancer patients, Melby says other persons who have dealt with cancer and have been cleared by their doctor can benefit from the service, as well as those who have uncomfortable swelling for other reasons. “A lot of people just have problems with lymphatic flow, and they are retaining fluids. Even bloating indicates a body in distress and a lymphatic system that might need some assistance,” she says. “One of the most enjoyable ways to get your whole body to work more efficiently for you, is to have LDM.”
The WINGS LDM is being highlighted during October when 10 percent of the cost goes back to WINGS, but it is available year-round upon request at Loma de Vida for $205. A typical lymphatic drainage massage at Loma de Vida takes approximately 60 minutes.
“We're here to help take care of people across the board, including those with medical challenges,” says Melby. “And we will support them in this beautiful, comforting space.”

Producer of the Ranch Chic Fashion Show
Benefitting the American Cancer Society
By Blithe Wiley | Photography by Anna Monette Photography
This October 5th, 65 men, women, and children cancer survivors will “strut their stuff” at the 2024 Ranch Chic Fashion Show. Coordinating the myriad details that go into this annual fundraiser benefitting the American Cancer Society takes an army of volunteers who tirelessly dedicate their time and talents to the event. The Ranch Chic Fashion Show is part of the annual Cattle Baron Gala festivities, and the proceeds raised by both events fund the Society’s cancer research and patient assistance programs.
For Julie Poppoon, the show's Producer, the Ranch Chic Fashion Show is both a passion and a labor of love. Having worked as a model since her college days at the University of Texas at Austin, Poppoon knows all about the attention to detail that a successful fashion show and fundraiser require. Plus, her father is a cancer survivor and volunteers each year as a cancer survivor model.
“We have cancer survivors who model in the show year after year,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to see these folks returning to participate year after year.”
Poppoon personally selects the outfits, boots, and accessories for each model, meeting with them in advance to get a sense of what outfits will best suit them. Cavender’s and Elegant Furs loan the clothes, boots, and accessories.
“I love to ‘bling it up’ for the models with stylish accessories and blingy boots,” Poppoon explained. “My motto is ‘More is More’ when it comes to the runway outfits.”
Poppoon helps with the fittings for the models and groups the models together to create a good flow for the show. She’s also in charge of putting the music together for the show.
“I take the music very seriously,” she said. “It’s really important to keep it so high energy to keep the models pumped up and the audience excited.”
When asked why people should support the Ranch Chic Fashion Show, Poppoon emphasized that cancer affects everybody. “This fundraiser raises money for life-saving cancer research and critical patient assistance programs.
“Also, the event is so special because it celebrates the survivors’ strength, courage, perseverance, and hope,” she continued. “It provides a night where they can forget about how scary and painful cancer can be. It celebrates these survivors so they feel beautiful, important, and successful.”
The event’s volunteers recruit sponsorships, head up the decorations, and handle countless other de-
tails. Two volunteers Poppoon is particularly grateful for are Registered Nurse Julie Hudson and Photographer Anna Monette.
“Julie volunteers her services each year to help with organizing the volunteers. She is indispensable in all the coordination and help she provides. And Anna donates her services to take the models’ headshots for the program. Also, we could not make this event a success without the leadership of Michal Waechter, the longtime Chairperson of the Ranch Chic Fashion Show.”
Outside her role as the Fashion Show’s producer, Poppoon wears many hats. She serves as a housing consultant and financial consultant for affordable multifamily housing. She is also a new bride, having married Christopher Jeffers this past June.

How To Avoid Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Scams
In August 2022, the FDA approved the sale of Over-thecounter (OTC) hearing aids. Since then, the marketing for hearing devices has been out of control. I have met with several people who have purchased unsuitable amplifiers for the user and risk damaging what hearing they have left. With so many “hearing aid” options, choosing a reputable and trustworthy option can be challenging. To aid in your search, here are seven common hearing aid scams to watch out for:
1. Unknown Brand Names: Beware of companies that only appear on a single website with no reviews or descriptions elsewhere. Reputable OTC hearing aid companies are usually reviewed and advertised on multiple sites.
2. Vague or Misleading Labels: Ensure the device is clearly marked as a hearing aid. Some companies use ambiguous terms like "hearing enhancement" to avoid admitting their products aren't actual hearing aids.
3. Fake FDA “Registration Certificates”: The FDA does not issue registration certificates to medical device companies. Any company displaying such a certificate is misleading.
4. Rock-Bottom Prices: Extremely low prices can indicate the product is an amplifier rather than a hearing aid. While cost is an important factor to most, this is very important to avoid because an amplifier could cause further damage to your hearing.
5. No Trial Period or Warranty: Texas requires a trial period of at least 30 days for hearing aids. Be cautious of companies that don’t offer this; new users need time to adjust and seek support if necessary.
6. Lack of Customer Support: Reliable companies provide accessible customer support. If contact information is hard to find, it's best to look elsewhere.
7. Unsubstantiated Claims: Avoid products claiming to "cure" hearing loss or offering advanced technology at a suspiciously low price. Hearing aids can improve hearing but won't completely restore it or cure hearing loss.
The best option to treat your hearing loss is prescription hearing aids fit by an audiologist you trust who adheres to Best Practices. You deserve the best.
Empowering Women With the Science of Egg Freezing
By Dr. Aimee Browne, Reproductive Endocrinologist at Aspire Fertility San Antonio
As more women seek to preserve their fertility for future family planning, egg freezing has grown in popularity. And it couldn’t come at a better time, as societal norms have shifted and more women are delaying parenthood for justifiable reasons, like career, relationships, and financial stability. Fortunately, advancements in reproductive medicine, like fertility preservation, are providing women with more options to have a baby on their clock and not Mother Nature’s.
Egg freezing is one form of fertility preservation that has proven to be a viable option, where a woman’s eggs are retrieved and frozen to be used later. My colleagues at NYU Langone Fertility Center released the first-of-its-kind,15-year longitudinal study on egg freezing, and data from that study found that over 74% of eggs survived the freezing process, and nearly 70% of those surviving eggs were successfully fertilized.
Arming yourself with as much information about egg freezing is pertinent to understanding if it is the right course of action to help you safeguard your fertility.
Who Does Egg Freezing Benefit
A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. As she ages, the number and quality of eggs decline, with a significant decrease in fertility by age 35. Not only does the number of eggs diminish, but the quality of those eggs also declines, making it harder to conceive. The late 20s to early 30s are considered the ideal age range for egg freezing because women have a higher ovarian reserve (a strong number of eggs) and higher egg quality, which is why many doctors recommend egg freezing by age 35.
But the great news is that if you are over 35 and considering freezing your eggs, you still have a high chance of achieving pregnancy later on. NYU Langone Fertility Center’s follow-up study on egg freezing found that 70% of women who froze eggs when they were younger than 38 – and thawed at least 20 eggs at a later date – had a baby.
The other benefit of egg freezing is that it preserves the age of the oocyte, or egg. For example, if a woman freezes her eggs at 32, and uses them at 42, she will have the same chances of becoming pregnant as she did at 32.
How Egg Freezing Works
In a standard monthly cycle, a woman will generally ovulate one egg. In egg freezing, a patient is given medications to stimulate the ovaries to mature multiple eggs at once.
Throughout the stimulation phase, patients are closely monitored through ultrasounds and blood work.
Once the eggs are ready to be retrieved, or harvested, a fertility specialist will remove the eggs while the patient is under mild sedation. It’s a fairly quick procedure – generally no more than 30 minutes –and patients usually experience very mild discomfort for a day or two following.
After eggs are retrieved, they are transferred to the embryology laboratory, where they are evaluated and determined to be mature enough to be frozen for later use through cryopreservation technology.
It’s important to speak with a reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) specialist to understand all your options, undergo a full reproductive health evaluation, and understand the costs associated with egg freezing. This insight will help you determine if egg freezing is the best path for your future family building.

The Search for Meaning
By Sunita Punjabi, PhD
In approximately December 2021, I remember approaching the next year with feelings of uncertainty I had never experienced when approaching the hope of a new year. My thoughts and hopes for 2022 were tainted with uncertainty and futility. I had experienced the second round of shortages at the grocery store. Once again, toilet paper, basic food, and staples were in short supply. Even today, as I walked through the grocery store, I noticed that people were wearing masks again. Some people were not, perhaps as a form of resignation, but now the conversation is widespread about new strains of the virus being caught.
Does life seem “Sisyphus to you?” The story is from Greek mythology. Even though it is not based on fact, it can teach us a lesson about humanity and the human spirit.
So, what can we learn from the story? The Greek gods wanted to punish King Ephyra. The worst punishment that the gods could conceive for a mortal was that he would have to push a boulder up a hill for the rest of his life. He lived with the awareness that he would have to do it all again the next day for the rest of his life. His daily existence and effort seemed to have no meaning or reason to continue, yet he had no choice.
This might explain the recent studies that have found 75% of the American workforce is disengaged. Fifteen percent of that total are actively sabotaging their work environment.
Since the events of the pandemic, most of us now are safe, employed, and have shelter. But so many are walking into my office searching for purpose, a reason for their existence. Many discuss with me that they sense something is wrong and mistake it for depression, anxiety, or something else. They seem to not have the words to explain this feeling that seems to be lying below the surface of being truly happy. Others have no clue they might be sensing what is being called “global PTSD” a globally felt feeling of anxiety or for some a feeling of futility, which is being exacerbated by rapid societal changes, technological advancements, and global uncertainties, such as global warming, random acts of violence, new strains of covid that seem to be occurring but not discussed. Mask on one day and mask off the next. Now we face a presidential election that is stressful for both parties, and most of the American people are upset by feelings of powerlessness.
Research on resilience shows that in times of unpredictability, people can create certainty and stability by having purpose and meaning because, underlying the futility, our daily existence is purposeful. A sense of direction can have a profound benefit on
our mental health, especially in the face of uncertainty or no direction.
The biggest gift in this entire process is missed by many, and that is knowing that purpose is not something “out there” that’s going to bite you in the butt. Most people still do not realize that if we are intentional and mindful, we might inherit the understanding that purpose is actually a created construct. It involves choice. We get to choose the meaning that we attach to everyday events. This understanding allows us to create meaning around what matters to us, and our values, and with that we can give meaning to the suffering we witness in the world. It does not make the suffering acceptable; it just makes it precious.
This idea is not new. It dates back to the work of Dr. Viktor Frankel a famous neurologist and psychiatrist. In his 1946 book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankel concluded that those who survived the holocaust atrocities were able to create meaning out
of their suffering. He identified the famous formula: d = s – m, despair is suffering that has no meaning. What does this have to do with us in 2024? We are living in times where we are aware of human suffering daily. Media has made people more aware of human suffering, global warming, ongoing war, and political life both local and international. Much of this was surfacing before the pandemic, but the events before and since have led to a second pandemic - the mental health crisis. Is it real? Clinicians witness rates of anxiety and depression that are unprecedented.
The good news is that we know what we need to do, and we have the brain to do it. Create meaning and purpose for your life. Live intentionally. Surround yourself with your community and find faith, knowing that life is happening for you and not to you.

Los Barrios: A San Antonio Legacy
By Janis Turk | Photos courtesy of Los Barrios
If San Antonio had a living room, it would be located at Los Barrios. This beloved family eatery on Blanco Road feels that familiar — that much like home.
In the heart of San Antonio, where the city’s vibrant culture and rich history intertwine, lies Los Barrios, a culinary institution synonymous with authentic Mexican and traditional Tex-Mex cuisine. For almost half a century, this family-owned restaurant has been serving dishes as heartwarming as the story behind them.
The tale begins in 1972 when Spanish radio and television journalist Jose Barrios purchased a small restaurant on West Avenue for his wife, Viola, and they called it La Casa Dora. “My dad adored my mother. He wanted her dream to come true, so he bought her a restaurant. Then three years later he was killed in a traffic accident, and it became our livelihood,” says Diana Trevino Barrios, one of Jose and Viola’s three children and a co-owner of Los Barrios with Louis and Teresa Barrios.
Viola grew up in Bustamante, Mexico, with a lot of love, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering faith in God. A former stay-at-home mom, she was an entrepreneur who always had side businesses going, importing Mexican jewelry and other goods, and making cakes for weddings and quinceaneras. Most of all, she possessed an innate culinary talent that would soon become the foundation of a beloved San Antonio culinary institution.
With no formal training and limited English, she relied on recipes passed down from her mother, aunts, and godmothers, infusing each dish with her unique touch. “These are Mom’s recipes, made just the way her family has cooked for their own families for generations,” says Trevino Barrios.
Los Barrios quickly gained a reputation for its authentic Mexican recipes and beloved San Antonio Tex-Mex flavors. Customers loved Viola, who greeted everyone, mixing her Spanish and English expressions with words of thanks to God and warm smiles. By 1979, she established Los Barrios on Ave B, and by 1980, the family purchased the current location, which originally was an old Dairy Queen building that now has attractive stucco walls, arched doorways, wrap-around dining rooms, and bright patio seating. Today, serving as San Antonio’s friendliest living room, or favorite dining room at least, Los Barrios celebrates its 45th anniversary this month.
Viola passed away in 2008, but her commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients, and her unwavering passion for cooking, lives on in every dish at Los Barrios. From classic enchiladas to tasty cabrito, the restaurant offers a culinary experience transporting diners to fond memories of family and home.
“Our cabrito is so delicious that I’ve seen older men crying because they haven’t had anything like this for more than 50 years back in Mexico,” Trevino Barrios says.
Other menu favorites include the enchiladas Mexicanas, the shrimp cocktail, the pollito en mole, the Milanese con papas, and the El Mofofo Grill. Regulars also love the authentic empanadas de carne, enchiladas en mole, and chile rellenos. But the most popular dish is their signature “S.A. Favorite puffy tacos” that the Barrios family was honored to serve to President Obama at the White House.
“We’re known for our mouthwatering Tex-Mex dishes and beautiful patio dining experience,” says Louis Barrios. “Most of all, though, we’re known for being a place for families.”
Los Barrios has won numerous awards and has been featured on national and international television networks and shows, including “Good Morning America,” and The Today Show.”
Los Barrios has grown and expanded over the years. In 2004, the family opened a second restaurant, La Hacienda de los Barrios. They also have a third restaurant, Viola’s Ventanas, run by Louis’ daughter, Lindsey Barrios. Diana’s son Jordan is a manager at Los Barrios, and Louis’ son Ian Barrios also manages and works all areas of the restaurant, too. Brother-inlaw Roland Trevino and sister Teresa Barrios Ogden
(a retired podiatrist) are also part of the dynamic family business.
Viola's Ventanas, ("Viola's Windows"), located in Westover Hills, offers upscale traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine in an old-world haciendastyle setting, perfect for enjoying delicious food with family and friends. The restaurant patio rests beneath handsome shade trees, providing a delightful outdoor dining experience.
A new painting by local artist Kathy Sosa honors Viola's loving life and legacy of delectable cuisine. The Barrios’ restaurants remain a testament to the enduring power of family and Viola’s culinary journey, which lives on in the Los Barrios’ cookbook. “In this way, our mother passes her recipes on to her San Antonio family, too,” says Louis.
Los Barrios is more than just a restaurant; It is a love story between Jose and Viola Barrios, their children, grandchildren, and this community.
“When you walk through our doors, you’re walking into our home,” says Louis Barrios. Diana agrees. “Everybody becomes an extension of our family. It’s just a San Antonio thing.”

Comfort
As the fall season arrives, the small-town charm of Comfort, a Hill Country jewel, really shines. A short drive from San Antonio, Comfort offers a relaxing, fun getaway complete with great shopping, wineries and restaurants, vintage accommodations, and special events.
The town is rich in architectural heritage, and nearly the entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of these structures are home to antique stores, specialty shops, restaurants, and lodging.
One of Comfort’s most popular autumn activities is the 12th Annual Comfort Art Festival, planned for September 21. A select group of Hill Country artists will demonstrate, display, and sell their works, representing a variety of media from oils to photography. These original pieces complement the many antiques available at stores throughout Comfort, including the Comfort Antiques Mall, 8th Street Market, Shopping with Siobhain’s Downright Comfort, America Reclaimed, and many more.
Shopping opportunities continue with Diva Day on November 9 and Girls Night Out on November 12. The town and its merchants dress up for Christmas to give visitors a head start on their holiday shopping.
The town’s signature event is Christmas in Comfort, one of the most popular holiday events in the Texas Hill Country. Always held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the daylong event includes shopping, entertainment, food, and family fun on November 30.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Weinachten Lichter (Christmas Lights Parade), which marks the end of the event. The parade features more than 100 entries from throughout Texas and has great small-town flavor. The parade starts with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus (parade organizers Garry and Janis Schwab) and ends with a wonderful fireworks display.
Comfort also has accommodations to meet the needs of almost any traveler, from cabins in the country to lavishly decorated Victorian-era mansions and picturesque creekside and river-side lodging.

"September"
Artist Taylor Jo Lane
Oil & gold leaf on gallery canvas | 24” x 30”
The cactus is a shining example of how something can thrive despite existing in some of the harshest conditions. An entity so vital to its ecosystem, the cactus knows its value and protects itself against anything keen on destroying it. A picture of beauty and life triumphing through hardship and trial.
This piece is shining and warm to welcome the celebration that is the month of September when both my daughter and I were brought into this world. The birth of my daughter marked the beginning of a new season of triumph after surviving the trial that came before. Love and light!
Taylor is a mixed media artist who favors acrylic, oil, and spray paint. She is inspired by Texan imagery and vibrant colors like the fiery pink and orange hues that light the sunset. Her painting style might be described as controlled chaos. With wild and striking elements conveyed as a balanced and intentional final piece, her art is representative of her story. Although her personal journey to the "final piece" is one that is constantly evolving, the chaos and hardship of her past have pushed her to finding the peaceful joy that is “blossoming” today- in life and in her art.
Taylor’s art can be found at taylorjolane.com and @taylorlaneart. Select pieces can be found at AnArte Gallery and Casa AnArte, 7959 Broadway St, San Antonio, TX 78209
