About The Cover
March 2023
It’s always a party at AnArte Gallery in the Collection on Broadway, and we can’t get enough of the colorful, contemporary artwork on display there. One of our favorite artists, Analy Diego, created the bold piece on this month’s cover, entitled “Green Pricks.”
Analy Diego’s “Pricks and Petals” series is inspired by the flora and fauna of our beautiful Texas; the almost untouchable beauty of a cactus, and the juxtaposition of its dangerous surface, the pricks, to the softness of its blooms are the main focus for the collection. Careful consideration was given to color to further highlight this contrast of surfaces, thus resulting in a series of dynamic, colorful, and balanced compositions.
Analy’s work is represented by AnArte Gallery. For inquiries about her artwork, contact: anartegallery@me.com

Work is well underway to convert a former Sonic Drive-In Restaurant location at 3521 Broadway St. into a FiiZ Drinks. Sonic closed in 2018. The Utah-based company recently announced plans to open several locations in Texas.
FiiZ describes itself as the largest specialty soda shop chain in the nation. On its website, the company writes, “The FiiZ vision was born when the Morgan and Anderson families, the original mixologists, came together over a love of creating specialty sodas.
“Today, the company is 51 locations strong and has come a long way since its humble beginning as a single store in Bountiful, Utah, in 2014.”
FiiZ Drinks serves up specialty carbonated and non-carbonated beverages such as sodas, energy drinks, smoothies, and frozen drinks. The company claims it offers tens of thousands of different drink combinations. Each location also offers a variety of snacks, including pretzels, churros, and nachos.
FiiZ did not respond to my request for information on when the Broadway St. location will open.
SODA SHOP CHAIN OPENING ON BROADWAY ST., SITE OF LONG SHUTTERED SONIC SHOPS AT LINCOLN HEIGHTS H-E-B EXPANSION TO INCLUDE BBQ RESTAURANT
The $5 million-dollar expansion of the H-E-B store at the Shops at Lincoln Heights (999 E. Basse Road) is well underway. The work includes a complete makeover of the building’s entrances plus a new structure of an estimated 42,000 square feet on the east side of the property.
H-E-B told 78209 Magazine, “The store will feature new and upgraded departments, a larger product assortment, an expanded Curbside area with more dedicated parking, and new Pharmacy Drive-Thru.” The expansion will also include an H-E-B True Texas BBQ restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
H-E-B demolished Twin Liquors and several adjacent stores to accommodate the new space.
As we reported in the April 2022 78209 Magazine, new construction will result in a building totaling an estimated 117,285 square feet. A store manager told me construction is expected to be completed in 2024. The store will remain operational during the renovations.

SA ZOO EARNS TOP HONOR
American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization and the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare practices, recently announced that San Antonio Zoo has once again earned an American Humane Certified™ seal. The certification confirms excellence in animal health, housing, positive social interactions with animal groups and handlers, as well as stimulating living environments.
This third-party audit of San Antonio Zoo’s animal welfare practices extends its certification term until February 2026. San Antonio Zoo was the first zoological facility in the world to be accredited and certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Zoological Association of America, and American Humane.
“We are pleased that American Humane has recognized San Antonio Zoo once again for our efforts to provide worldclass animal care and focus on animal welfare,” said Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo.
Morrow continued, “This year, that focus has reached newer heights with the addition of our Director of Animal Welfare,
Dr. Charles Ritzler, as well as being awarded #2 in the nation for animal welfare by Blooloop to be a leader in excellence in animal care, animal welfare, education, and conservation.”
Best known for their work in the film industry to ensure “no animals were harmed in making this film,” American Humane is the country’s first national humane organization and the world’s largest certifier of the welfare and humane treatment of animals in working, entertainment, and other environments. American Humane was founded in 1877.
Hi-Speed Google Fiber Rolling Out in Oak Park Northwood
As we reported in February 2022, Google Fiber began tiptoeing its way back into 78209 with a small project to make Google Fiber available to the Urban Crest Apartments near Harry Wurzbach Rd.
John-Michael Cortez, Google’s Government and Community affairs executive, had told me there were no plans at the time to expand Google Fiber any further into 78209 unless requested to do so by area residents. But that has changed. And, what began as tip-toeing, has turned into a stampede, as area residents saw arrows and other markers on their streets in recent weeks. Google Fiber is rolling out service throughout 78209 and the Oak Park Northwood neighborhood.
AT&T has already blanketed much of the area with its fiber optic service. Some residents tell me they welcome the
competition from Google. Both companies say they provide very high-speed internet service.
Google Fiber has had a rocky relationship with Oak Park Northwood. When the company first tried to introduce the service in the area, it originated from so-called Fiber Huts built in area parks. Neighbors strongly objected to the hut placed in Haskin Park, off Eisenhauer Road.
The company backed down. It removed the hut (See Oct 2017 78209 Magazine). Google also modified the methods it used to bring fiber optic cables into neighborhoods, no longer relying on Fiber Huts as a distribution point.

SECURE YOUR WEALTH
For those interested in beginning their precious metals collection as a safeguard against the decrease in fiat currency value, call or come by Alamo City Gold & Silver. It is wise to have in your portfolio since it’s not a matter of “if” fiat money will eventually fail, but a matter of “when.” Google hyperinflation in Argentina and Venezuela and see how much fiat paper money it takes to buy a chicken.
Three primary benefits precious metals have over fiat currency:
1. Precious metals have always held value.
2. Precious metals as a hedge against inflation.
3. Precious metals are accepted worldwide.

Treating Others Like Family Starts With a Passion to Help
By Meredith Kay | Photography by Al Rendon
Choosing someone to handle your family’s financial plan is not something that most of us take lightly. It’s important to know who you trust and to ensure that the financial advisor has your family’s best interests at heart. It can take years to build this trust, and the best advisors understand this and dedicate their careers to earning their clients’ trust and respect.
Christian Rivera is a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Alamo Heights, and he has a passion for helping individuals in the community protect and grow their hard-earned money. Christian was born and raised in San Antonio. He graduated from O’Connor High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Texas Tech University.
He loves being a part of the business community in Alamo Heights and working with local residents to help them manage their money, plan for retirement, and protect their investments. Christian says, “I really take the time to get to know someone on a personal level. It’s important to establish that trust with my clients and to ask the big questions that will allow us to focus on what is important to them, what they want their family’s lifestyle to be, and what retirement looks like for them personally.”
Christian recently married Tatiana Ramirez in December, and although they haven’t started their own family just yet, he considers family to be very important. They met at Texas Tech, even though Tatiana also attended O’Connor High School. She is currently teaching third grade at Potranco Elementary but is interested in possibly pursuing a second career in the events planning industry.
Rivera’s interest in finance was ignited when his father introduced him to the teachings and educational programs of Dave Ramsey while attending college. In fact, by following his own aggressive plan, inspired by Ramsey’s program, Christian was able to pay off his $36,000 student loan debt in just 18 months.
Edward Jones advisors are well-known for their community involvement, and Christian was drawn to the company by
their non-competitive culture and volunteer programs that allow advisors to help out in the communities that they serve. He says, “Everyone with Edward Jones wants everyone else to succeed. We all help each other, and that’s how life should be.”
A self-proclaimed “foodie,” Christian enjoys spending his free time with his family and his dog, Moochie, a Shih Tzu. He and Tatiana are enjoying life as newlyweds, and are excited about their honeymoon trip this summer, a 10day European cruise. On the weekends, the couple like to go hiking around San Antonio and the Hill Country, and they are avid comedy fans and love to catch the shows at
local comedy clubs. Christian has even made it a goal to eventually do a stand-up comedy open mic event.
Christian has a friendly and welcoming demeanor that immediately puts you at ease, and enjoys what he does because it allows him to really connect with his clients. He strives to serve his clients as a partner, helping people to reach their financial goals and life milestones successfully. He says, “When someone chooses me to work with them, it’s like becoming a part of their family, and I will work very hard to make sure that their hard work pays off and that their family is taken care of.”

Thad, Anna, T.R. & Elaine Ziegler
14 78209magazine.com
Seeing the Ziegler Family Clearly
By Meredith Kay Photography by Al Rendon
There are several family names known throughout San Antonio due to their legacy businesses within the city, and the Zieglers are proud of their history. Thad Ziegler is a fifthgeneration Ziegler, and he is the third generation of Zieglers to live in Alamo Heights.
Thad Ziegler Glass is not only the oldest family-owned and operated glass company in San Antonio, dating back to 1893, it is also the oldest family glass company in the U.S.A. The company was established by William Ziegler and his nephew, Carl. The original company was located on Houston Street, and today they have six locations in San Antonio, Boerne, Kerrville, and San Marcos.
Thad is married to Anna Ziegler. Anna grew up in Conroe and graduated from Texas A&M College Station with a degree in International Business and a minor in French in 2004. Thad graduated from U.T. Austin in 1998 with a degree in Finance, and the couple met at a Halloween party in San Antonio in 2004.
Anna says, “I was working in Houston after I graduated from college, and I went to a Halloween party, dressed as a witch, with some friends. I met Thad at that party. He was dressed as Peter Pan, so we like to say that it was ‘Love at first tights.’ I went home and told everyone that I’d just met the man that I’m going to marry, and we were married in January 2007.”
Together, they have two children. Thad, or T.R. as he’s called, is 12 and enjoys football and playing the violin, and he is an active member of his Boy Scouts patrol. Their daughter, Elaine, is nine and loves to play basketball and volleyball. She also loves to dance and explore her inner fashionista, and she is the social butterfly of the family, according to her mom. Both of them are in the Spanish Immersion program at their schools.
Thad works as the C.O.O. of Thad Ziegler Glass, and he runs the company with his brother, Will, and his father, T.W. Their patriarch, Max Zieler, passed away in 2021, but they are proud to adhere to the family values handed down from their father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather for the past 130 years. In his spare time, Thad loves to play guitar and sing with his band, The Z.G.s. He also serves on the Alamo Heights School Foundation Board, and he’s active with the Rotary Club, The German Club, and the Texas Cavaliers.
Anna said that she learned all about Fiesta from Thad’s family, who has a long history with The Texas Cavaliers. In 2019, Anna left a position at Rackspace to become an independent risk management consultant. Her company, A.R.Z. Risk Consulting, helps companies assess their risk and analyze their insurance programs, identifying gaps to mitigate risk.
She is an avid reader, loves to exercise, and utilize her interior design skills. She is the current P.T.O. President at Cambridge Elementary, and also serves on the boards for The DoSeum, and is an active member of The Battle of Flowers Association.
The family loves to travel, spend time outside hiking and waterskiing, and hang out with family and friends. Anna loves living in Alamo Heights because the sense of community is so strong. She says, “Everyone is so supportive, and the community is so cohesive. We all look out for one another, and it gives me comfort to know that my neighbors are looking out for everyone else too. We are happy and grateful that we get to raise our family in such a great community.”

“A HOME IS ONLY AS GOOD AS IT’S FOUNDATION”
Born to Fly
USAF Lt. Col (ret) Paul “PK” Krause
By Ron Aaron Eisenberg
For 78209 resident Paul “PK” Krause, flying was just something he wanted to do. As he explains it, he was bitten by the flying bug early on, and he never recovered. He still has the itch today!
Krause was born in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1962, and ended up in San Antonio not long after. That’s no surprise since his mom was a native Texan. Mom and dad, a Chicagoan, met at the Naval Air Station in Kingsville. And everyone knows if you marry a Texan, you will end up living in Texas sooner rather than later.
He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1980 and attended SMU in Dallas, where he graduated in 1984. He was a Business Major, but flying was his goal. “My dad had introduced me to flying, and I really enjoyed it. Flying really gives me a feeling of freedom. You see the world from a different perspective.”
Krause told me, “When I graduated from SMU, I’d already obtained a pilot’s spot in the Air Force.” He began his career at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. After basic training, he went to pilot training in Del Rio at Laughlin AFB, where he flew T-37s and the supersonic T-38 jet trainer.
Krause finished high enough in the class to have a choice about aircraft he could fly. He chose the F-16. His career included F-16 Division Chief as a test pilot at Nellis AFB, in Nevada, from 1994-1997. Prior to that assignment, he was a Weapons Officer and Instructor Pilot at Spangdahlem Air Base, in Germany, from 1989-1994. He was also an F-16
pilot and Plans Officer, at Torrejón AB, in Spain, prior to his assignment in Germany.
In 1991, Krause was deployed to Turkey and flew combat missions into northern Iraq in support of Desert Storm, a military operation to expel occupying Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which Iraq had invaded and annexed months earlier.
As his 3-year tour at Nellis AFB neared an end, a friend pushed him to join the Thunderbirds. The squadron was based about 200 yards from his office. The Thunderbirds are the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, created 70 years ago in 1953. Krause told 78209 Magazine, “I figured I’d give it a shot.” He put in his application for the show team and was selected as slot pilot #4. That was in 1997, the same year the Air Force was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Krause told me he flew two or three times the hours in the F-16 than what someone would ordinarily get to do. He loved it.
Speaking of love, he met his wife, Anne, in the squadron, where she served as executive officer. (Read about her in the March 2022 78209 Magazine.) They married in November 2003. She calls him PK, his call sign.
Following his tour with the Thunderbirds, Krause returned to San Antonio and flew for the Texas National Guard. He retired as a Lt. Col. in 2005. Of note, Krause is the 6th pilot in the world to fly for over 4000 hours in F-16.
He was happy to tell me, “The only thing I didn’t do is crash or eject.” And that’s a very good thing.

2023 ALAMO HEIGHTS ISD TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Benjamin Keenan, English Language Arts teacher and department chair at Alamo Heights HS, is the 2023 Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year.
Keenan has been teaching in AHISD since 2008 and started his teaching career in 2006.
“My contribution is that I do my best to steer us away from pitfalls of numbers, weight, GPA, rank, etc., and towards purpose, mastery, rubric language and above all a separation of the product of the student and the student themselves,” Keenan said. “I continue to love my job and love the opportunity to work with students to achieve their goals. I am grateful for the day of small things and the day of immense hope. And, of course, I am grateful to those outstanding colleagues that continue to show up to serve in a truly vital capacity.”
Keenan will represent AHISD as the district’s nominee for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Education and Region 20 Teacher of the Year.
“He prioritizes creating a learner-centered classroom environment, empowering his students to take ownership of their learning and collaborate with each other, promoting a strong sense of community and a global perspective,” said Cory Smith, AHHS Principal. “His students often comment that there is never a bad day in his class and how they enjoy interactive and high levels of discussion and thinking, they
appreciate his quick-wittedness and the climate of high expectations he sets for all students.”
In November, each campus hosted a Teacher of the Year nomination process and selected one teacher who exemplifies the Profile of a Learner to represent their campus this year. A Selection Committee of AHISD teachers and staff met in January to select the District Teacher of the Year.
All five campus teachers of the year were recognized at the January 19 Board Meeting, where the District Teacher of the Year was announced.
The 2023 Campus Teachers of the Year are:
Alamo Heights HS - Ben Keenan, ELAR teacher and department chair
Junior School - John “Charley” Gilbert, Student Support Team (SST) Teacher and Coach
Cambridge - Courtney Crane, 4th-grade teacher

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL & FAB FRESHMAN SHINE IN CALIFORNIA
During the Holiday, Baron Women’s Basketball made the trip to San Francisco, California, to compete in the Bay Area West Coast Jamboree tournament. The prestigious event consisted of over 100 teams competing in 14 different brackets and also included the #4 ranked team in the nation.
The Barons competed valiantly against California public schools with enrollments of over 2,500. They went 1-2 on the weekend, including falling in a double-overtime instant classic to Alhambra. The game would also prove to be a historic one as freshman phenom point-guard, Beya Chase, scored 43 points in the losing effort. Chase was also recognized as one of 10 finalists across the State of Texas for the Dave Campbell’s “Miss Texas Basketball” for week eight.
West Coast Jamboree was also a special experience for the Barons as they met Sabrina Ionescu. The former WNBA first-round draft pick and current star was a guest speaker at the event. Well done, Barons…SHIELDS UP!
CONGRATULATIONS TO SAINT MARY’S HALL STUDENT, JONATHAN TUBB
Congratulations to Jonathan Tubb ‘23 for an outstanding showing at the TwentyFifth Annual National Extemporaneous Speaking Round Robin on the campus of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. THE BENEFITS OF OUTPATIENT CATARACT SURGERY
Most cataract surgery procedures in the United States today are performed in an outpatient setting. Outpatient cataract surgery at dedicated eye surgery centers is designed to maximize patient safety, comfort, and convenience. Having your cataract procedure in an outpatient surgery center is also the most affordable method of cataract surgery.
Cataract surgery is now one of the most common and successful surgical procedures performed, and it only takes 1015 minutes for the actual procedure to be performed. The good news about cataract surgery is that many patients experience vision that is actually better than what they had before they developed cataracts.
In addition to saving you out-of-pocket expenses, outpatient cataract surgery reduces the costs of health care to Medicare and the insurance industry when compared to hospital-based cataract care. Be sure to ask your surgeon whether or not your cataract surgery is being performed in a private outpatient setting or in a hospital-based ASC.

THE ANIMAL DEFENSE LEAGUE AND MADDIE’S FUND: “2023 OPEN ARMS CHALLENGE”
By Nadia De La Garza
As ADL continues to grow and serve the San Antonio community, we are always looking into new ways we can aid our supporters, adopters, and families, whether they are looking to adopt a new pet or provide more assistance to our organization.
In January, ADL applied to be part of the 2023 Open Arms Challenge by Maddie’s Fund! Maddie’s Fund provides resources and grant funding to honor their commitment to keeping pets and people together. Their Open Arms Challenge is about opening our hearts and minds to more accessible and inclusive practices. For the month of April 2023, the team at Maddie’s Fund is encouraging animal shelters, foster-based organizations, and public charities focused on keeping pets and people together to pilot new approaches that open doors to new adopters and volunteers, and are welcoming of our entire community.
Our practices at ADL have always been focused on keeping our pets happy, loved, and, most importantly, adopted into loving homes. Additionally, ADL values care, compassion, trust, and integrity.
During the month of April, ADL will put extra emphasis on continuing our efforts to:
1. Uphold processes that are equitable and inclusive,
2. Ensure customer success through customer service,
3. Continue marketing efforts that are inclusive of all areas of our community,
4. Embrace an open and welcoming culture, and
5. Create partnerships with other organizations.
We hope that the 78209 community will join us in our continuous work to provide crucial care for pets in crisis while also being intentional about how we connect with all areas of San Antonio.
To learn more about Maddie’s Fund, visit their website at www.adltexas.org to learn more about ADL, or we invite you to visit us at one of our 3 locations.

El Catrin Restaurant & Bar
The Well-Dressed Flavors of El Catrin
34 78209magazine.com
By Meredith Kay | Photography by Al Rendon
When you walk through the doors at El Catrin, it’s the simplicity of the interior that hits you first. There are only a few pictures on display, but they each make a statement against the white walls and black accents. The clean lines of the restaurant seem to say, “In this place, the food takes center stage,” and with one bite, you will agree completely.
El Catrin is a Spanish term for a dandy, or well-dressed gentleman. The restaurant’s owner, Federico Guillen, is from the Mexican state of Michoacán, which lies west of Mexico City and spreads out to the Pacific coast. The name was inspired by the Lotería card, El Catrin, and Guillen wanted to bring the authentic flavors of his homeland to San Antonio. The menu features the unique flavors and family recipes that he grew up with, and along with head chef Raul Flores, they have created an outstanding culinary experience that will have you returning again and again.
Federico immigrated to San Antonio with his family nearly 30 years ago, and he spent 20 years working at Rosario’s, learning the restaurant business and fine-tuning his unparalleled customer service. His wife, Cendy, is a native of Alamo Heights and grew up attending the same local schools that their two children, Mateo (8) and Sofia (6), will attend. Federico also has an older son named Federico (28), who lives in San Antonio and works closely with his father at the restaurant.
Guillen says, “My wife grew up in Alamo Heights and attended school here, and we wanted to bring authentic flavors from my homeland to the hometown community that she grew up in.”
The neon sign on the back wall of the restaurant reads, “I Love Chilaquiles,” and one bite of El Catrin’s chilaquiles will make you a believer. The overthe-top flavor embodied by both the verde and rojo sauces featured in this dish pairs perfectly with the crispy tortilla chips, fresh queso, red onions, and perfectly cooked egg that tops off the dish. Their extensive menu features brunch items all day long, and the restaurant maintains a full bar with some of the best margaritas, mangonadas, and mimosas in town.
The restaurant, which occupies the space of the former Adelante, has been well-received by the community, and the interior remodel is classic and understated in order to let the food take the spotlight. The menu is very large and features everything from coastal favorites like ceviche and several regional and authentic fish and shrimp dishes to flavorful caldos and specialty enchiladas. Everything on the menu is prepared from fresh ingredients, so expect to relax, soak up the atmosphere, and let yourself be transported south of the border for a memorable meal that will leave you craving to explore every item on the menu. And, really, order the chilaquiles. They are THAT good. El
