Spring is here, and Mother’s Day is right around the corner (hint, hint). We’re making the most of the season with bright colors and beautiful flowers! For many San Antonians, the early-April days filled with excitement, parades, cascarones, and festivities were followed by post-Fiesta blues. While many businesses “shut down” to make way for Fiesta, the team at Alamo Plants and Petals stayed busy filling orders for a long list of customers, celebrations, and official Fiesta events, including the Royalty Coronation and Battle of Flowers Parade. After the Fiesta dust settled, it was time to capture our cover photo. Although it was a slow day, the shop was buzzing with phone calls, scheduled deliveries, walk-in customers, and a design team hard at work. The stunning display featured on this month’s cover was designed and arranged by Alamo Plants and Petals’ head designer, Manuel Heredia.

M AY 2 0 2 2 Has your family started counting down the days until the school year ends? I know I’m not the only one who can’t believe it’s already MAY! Time seems to be passing faster these days, so an opportunity to slow down and find joy in the little things is always welcome. Recently, I sat down for a leisurely lunch with my family at Mama’s Cafe, and it felt like stepping back in time! As our dining feature this edition, Mama’s Cafe has been a longtime San Antonio favorite and recently opened its doors once again. We are so glad to have Mama’s back and better than ever! Our business feature shares the story of William and Amber Hargrove, owners of Hargrove’s Fine Wine & Spirits. William and Amber bring exceptional customer service to their store every day and love to help each customer who walks through the door find exactly what they’re looking for or recommend something new. The store is inviting with a comfortable seating area, friendly conversation, and a story behind every piece of decor. After meeting the family of four, it was easy to see why customers feel at home at Hargrove’s. Robbie and Amory Felder prefer to spend their time at home, enjoying the backyard with their daughter and creating a space inside that reflects their charming personalities. Much like Felder Gallery, a family business that Robbie took over and brought to San Antonio, their home is filled with artwork. Their latest renovation project can be spotted as you pass by - now in full bloom, the Felders have added an outdoor living space that features the first “green roof” in Alamo Heights! I hope you take the opportunity to slow down and enjoy reading the May edition of 78209 Magazine!

HANDS OFF THOSE OUTDOOR HOSE BIBBS All area municipalities - Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, and Terrell Hills - recently ordered water restrictions after San Antonio entered Stage 2 watering rules. The decision comes in the wake of La Niña, which has delivered hot, dry conditions to Texas. The three communities follow San Antonio’s decisions on outdoor watering. Stage 2 water rules are triggered when the 10-day average at the Edwards Aquifer J-17 monitoring well drops below 650 feet. As a reminder, the watering restrictions include: - Landscape watering with an irrigation system, sprinkler, or soaker hose is permitted only on your designated day, once a week, from 7–11 a.m. and 7–11 p.m. - The last digit of your address determines your watering day. Addresses ending in 0 or 1 are Monday, 2 or 3 are Tuesday, 4 or 5 are Wednesday, 6 or 7 are Thursday, and 8 or 9 are Friday. Areas without a street address, such as medians and neighborhood entryways, water on Wednesday. 12 78209magazine.com
- Hand watering with a hand-held hose is allowed any day, any time. - Watering with drip irrigation or a 5-gallon bucket is permitted any day, but only between 7–11 a.m. and 7–11 p.m. - Washing impervious cover (i.e., parking lots, driveways, streets, etc.) is prohibited. - Water waste is prohibited at all times. Allowing water to run off into a gutter, ditch, drain, or failing to repair a controllable leak is considered water waste. - Residential car washing is allowed on Saturday or Sunday as long as there is no water waste. - Variances will be needed for new landscape installations, water fountains, athletic fields, large properties, and power washing. Residents who observe watering violations can report them at saws.org/conservation/water-waste/report-water-wasteform/ or by calling the SAWS water saver number (210) 704-7283 (SAVE). Each jurisdiction favors education over fining water abusers, but fines can approach $500-$2,000 per day for repeat offenders.

PET SPA OPENS ON BROADWAY IN ’09
When Marc and Debra Hildebrand’s dog groomer moved to New Braunfels, they faced finding a new groomer for Bowie, their Maltipoo. After failing to locate one they liked, the two decided to open their own doggie spa as franchisees for PetBar. The new spa is located at 5231 Broadway, 78209, and offers services for dogs and cats. Hildebrand told 78209 Magazine, “We offer self-service washing, providing everything you’d need to wash your fur baby. We also have a full-service option and do ear cleaning and nail trimming.” 14 78209magazine.com
He added, “We have membership plans for a monthly fee that entitles members to up to four washes a month or unlimited self-service bathing. Our shop is completely open – customers can see the entire facility. Each groomer has their own room, so we keep the pets separate from one another. We can also put dogs together who get along to play in our ‘Party Rooms.’” Prices for grooming and washing vary by the size of the dog. The spa is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. They are closed on Sundays. petbar 5231 Broadway Suite 121 | (210) 845-0209 | petbarAH.com

arrival. We hope she loves her new home. We encourage the community to visit and give her a personal welcome to San Antonio and the zoo. Fingers crossed that we have little jaguar cubs in our future.”
She was transferred from Memphis Zoo to San Antonio Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) in hopes she will eventually breed with the zoo’s male jaguar, B’alam.
The zoo notes that Jaguars are native to the tropical forests of Mexico, Central, and South America. They are considered near threatened due to habitat loss. There are currently more than 100 jaguars in North American-accredited AZA zoos, while it is estimated that 10,000 jaguars currently reside in the wild. The historical range of jaguars used to be much broader and included the Southwestern United States, including Texas and even the San Antonio area.
Memphis Zoos Animal Care staff say Frida has a sweet demeanor and loves enrichment, especially if it involves water or scents like cinnamon and nutmeg. Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo, is quoted in the zoo’s news release, “We are thrilled about Frida’s 18 78209magazine.com

William and Amber Hargrove are proud of their often unique and hard-to-find selections of wine and highend and affordable liquors. They are always eager to help customers discover something new.
Phyllis taught her early in her career that has stuck with her, and she carries the philosophy into her customer service at Hargrove’s. “We’re not just selling wine here. We are selling a service. We want to be the go-to expert on wine and spirits in the community. We pride ourselves on unsurpassed customer service. It’s what sets us apart from the big box stores, and we love to build relationships with our customers.”

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS -
The Art of Raising a Family in ‘09 By Meredith Kay Photography by Al Rendon
Oscar Wilde once wrote that “life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” There has been debate throughout the years as to exactly what he meant by this famous line. Each of us has a unique story, and often the events that shape our lives will guide our views of the world around us. We all strive to create spaces for ourselves that reflect our character and make us feel comfortable and peaceful. Robby and Amory Felder’s desire to create a unique space to match their personalities has helped them create a modern yet natural oasis within their home and into the backyard. Both Robby and Amory are native San Antonians who knew each other in high school at Alamo Heights. After they both graduated from college and moved around, their paths crossed, and they started dating. Robby studied at The Art Institute in Houston before moving to Southern California. When his parents retired, he moved to South Texas to take over their art gallery in Rockport. After successfully running The Felder Gallery for eight years, he still exudes a laid-back, friendly, beachy vibe. Amory studied marketing at Texas Tech and spent time in Denver and Austin. In 2012, Amory moved back to San Antonio. Closer to the beach again, Amory and her friends loved to take trips to the coast. While in town, Amory often spent time with Robby. It was then that their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. Robby and Amory commuted back and forth to see one another. Eventually, Amory convinced Robby to move the gallery to San Antonio in 2017 so that they could be together and start a family near Amory’s family. The Felder Gallery is located on North Main Street, near Woodlawn, and features many different artists and mediums. The couple lives in Alamo Heights on Lamont Avenue in a beautiful home filled with art, and they’ve spent the past several years creating a home that reflects their interests and unique character. Their home has recently seen a remodel of the outdoor living space and features the only “green” roof in Alamo Heights. Robby’s vision was to create a modern and natural setting for
their outdoor space. Robby did the research needed to design a living rooftop on their detached garage. The family spends a lot of time together in the garden, where their cherubic three-year-old daughter, Tillie, loves to twirl and play with her toys on the artificial turf lawn surrounded by exquisitely designed xeriscape landscaping. The Felders love living in Alamo Heights, and when asked what they love about the neighborhood, Robby says, “We love walking the dog along the greenbelt on La Jara Boulevard, where we can hear the crowds cheering at the baseball games in Olmos Basin Park.” Robby and Amory are expecting their second child in June. Soon, Tillie will have a little brother named Forbes to play with in her backyard oasis. MAY 2022

Designing the Perfect Kids’ Spaces By Jana Valdez, Allied ASID Photography by Matthew Niemann
Designing a kids’ space doesn’t have to be a daunting task! These little balls of energy deserve a space to call their own. I’d like to share a few designer tips with you for creating unique and amazing kids’ spaces for your little ones.
perfect opportunity to express your child’s personality and playfulness. Take the opportunity to use bright colors in artwork, bedding, and furniture pieces. Make it fun!
Tip 1: Design for Longevity
What are your child’s interests? Do they love dinosaurs, or space exploration, or maybe butterflies? Build a room around specific interests that your child has to give them a sense of ownership of the room. Think outside of the box… such as a campsite or a painter’s studio. Allow the room to highlight what’s unique about your child’s interests.
Although we would love for our kiddos to stay young forever, they grow up on us! When planning a children’s space, think long-term. The more expensive elements of the room should be able to grow with your child through their teenage years. So, avoid the fairy and cartoon wallpaper and opt for something with long-term appeal, such as a painted wood accent wall or a functional reading nook. You can always incorporate fairies and cartoon characters into your bedding or artwork—items that are easy to update and replace over time. Tip 2: Encourage Creativity When designing for a child’s space, give them room to express their creativity and to create their own “adventures” in their space. A chalkboard wall and built-in bookshelves provide for hours of creative play and learning through reading. What about incorporating a map of the world on the wall and pinning places that you have traveled together? Little minds love to create and learn. Tip 3: Incorporate Color Bright colors stimulate little minds and keep the room from becoming too stuffy and grown-up. Color is the 24 78209magazine.com
Tip 4: Make it Personal
Tip 5: Make it Functional OK, so cute and cozy is great, but don’t forget function! In a nursery, incorporate blackout window treatments to help baby sleep at naptime and include a comfortable chair in the corner for midnight feedings. In a playroom, add storage for toys and books. Having a functional and organized room can go a long way in easing the mind and the workload of a busy parent. So, don’t be afraid to go for it! Design a special place for your child that they can grow with and have fun in. After all, they are not little for long!

Frank Stanage By Ron Aaron Eisenberg
It would be difficult to tell just by looking at Frank Stanage, but he can tell you anything you may want to know about the M60 machine gun. It was the workhorse weapon used by the military for decades. Stanage is now Human Resources Director for the Alamo Heights Independent School District. But he was a combat weapons expert in the Air Force for 10 years before he transferred into recruiting. George Franklin Stanage IV, who goes by “Frank,” grew up in New Buffalo, a tiny town in Michigan, population 2,500. He graduated from high school in 1983, at a time when a recession made finding a job difficult. That’s why he decided to enlist in the Army. Both his dad and grandfather were retired Army vets. But he was only 17-years old and needed a parent’s signature to enlist. His dad said no to the Army, but agreed to let his son join the Air Force. “That,” says Strange, “is something I thank him for every day.” After basic training, he was stationed at Camp Bullis, a nearly 28,000-acre training facility in northern Bexar County. “I was an expert in weapons and taught people how to use them.” He later moved into recruiting, which he loved. 28 78209magazine.com
About his military career, Stanage says, “To this day I am proud and happy to have served. There are a couple of things I took from the military – focus on hard work and not achievement – if the work is done the achievement will be there. And, the military taught me to focus on the process and not the outcome.” He adds that experience in recruiting prepared him for his move into education and human resources. He graduated from Concordia University Texas with a Master’s Degree in Education, having earlier earned a B.S. in Organizational Leadership from Southern Nazarene University. And, prior to that, he attended the Community College of the Air Force, where he received an Associate of Science Degree in Human Resources Management. Stanage retired from the Air Force in 2009 as a Senior Master Sargent. He was associate dean of school at San Antonio Academy, for 10 years. When he learned AHISD was looking for an HR director, he applied for the position and was selected. “That was an ideal fit for me.” He and his wife, Kim, a science teacher at Alamo Heights High School, live in 78209. Their son attends the Alamo Heights Junior School. He says, “We love living in Alamo Heights because it has a small-town feel. In his spare time, he’s a leader for Boy Scout Troop 809.

SMH Student Selected as Teen of Impact by Go Red for Women Campaign

-
In April 2021, the American Heart Association announced their Teen of Impact nominee, Ferzine Sanjana ’23, for their yearly fundraising opportunity: Go Red for Women. This cause is something Ferzine is deeply passionate about, as heart disease is the #1 killer of women in America. Many women prioritize their family needs and ignore their own health issues, making it vital to create awareness of women’s heart risks. “Starting February 4th, 2022, for nine weeks, I competed against five other teens from different schools in San Antonio to raise the maximum funds for the Go Red for Women campaign and spread awareness in our community about cardiovascular diseases and preventative measures. “My team included F11 students Anna Albrecht, Luz Elena Chapa, Helena Hanor, Sofia El Hajj Moussa, Maria Medina Grace Phillips, and Hannah Storrie. We held several fundraising events for the campaign, including silent auctions, Walk for a Healthy Heart at Saint Mary’s Hall with our students, parents, and faculty, collaborations with Kendra Scott and KWJ Jewelers, and organizing a dance class. All the proceeds went towards this cause, and after nine weeks of hard work and perseverance, my team and I won the campaign raising a grand total of $51,166! It was an absolute pleasure to run the campaign, bring awareness to heart health, and give others the opportunity to take charge of their health through education and a healthy lifestyle. It has also helped me reach out and participate more in my community, realizing the people’s generosity and benevolence towards such a pivotal cause.” MAY 2022

Senior Spotlight: MacArthur High School’s Luis Lozano Luis Lozano is a busy guy. When he’s not working on assignments for his classes at MacArthur High School, he is the captain of the boys’ varsity soccer team, participates in the AVID program, tutors fellow students, and works parttime at H-E-B. He admits he has a lot on his plate but credits these experiences over the past four years for getting him where he is today. After applying to five colleges, receiving five acceptances, and being offered more than $250,000 in scholarships, Luis will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall on a full scholarship. “I think being a student-athlete over the years helped me work on discipline and communication skills,” said Lozano. “And being a part of the AVID program has been very helpful because it helps you work on skills like note-taking and public speaking. That has helped me a lot because I went from someone who is very shy to someone who is really vocal.” AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, was introduced to him in middle school. 32 78209magazine.com
It’s a college readiness program that checked all the boxes for Luis. Its three focuses are academic instruction, tutorial support, and college readiness. Not only did Luis get the support he needed, but he’s also now giving that support to other students as a tutor throughout the week. “I specifically help the freshman AVID class in their core classes. I help them in science and biology. I also help them with their English and math. “ His experience as a tutor has even piqued his interest in a career in education. But regardless of the path he ultimately chooses, he’s grateful for what North East ISD has provided him. “The opportunities that NEISD gives you really help when you take advantage of them. Because in the long run, it helps you become a better person, not just a better student. You can be a better son, a better big brother. NEISD did that for me.” Congratulations Luis! Good luck to you and the rest of the class of 2022.
Good News Brings Happy Tears #theNEISDway Montserrat Rodriguez and Melanie Sandoval received life-changing news. Both MacArthur High School seniors were surprised by the news that they had earned the Impact Scholarship from the University of Texas in Austin worth $48,000. They celebrated with their families and MacArthur staff with happy tears and hugs of joy. Montserrat is also a Minnie Stevens Piper Scholarship winner. This four-year grant essentially covers any additional educational expenses not covered by financial aid. “I can’t believe this,” said Montserrat. “It doesn’t feel real. I guess once I’m there, it’ll hit me. I was pretty worried about how I was going to pay for school, so this has changed my life.”

Melanie is soon to be a first-generation college student. She and her family were overcome with emotion when they learned the news. “I wasn’t sure I would make it this far,” said Melanie. “Now, I can go to school and study, and I don’t have to worry about money so much. As much as this means to Melanie and Montserrat, it means even more to their parents. “I was ready to get another job to help her go to college, so this helps so much,” said Melanie’s mother, Lorena Perez. “She’s the first one in my whole family to get a scholarship for a university. She’s a hard-working girl. We are so happy for her.” Melanie and Montserrat are both one step closer to their dream of going to college. Montserrat wants to study International Relations and Global Studies. Melanie plans to study Social Work so she can one day work in rehabilitation centers. MAY 2022

FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS
-
The Animal Defense League of Texas “We take them in. You take them home,” is the motto at The Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL). Chartered as a non-profit in 1934, ADL continues to exist as a true no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats in South Texas. At ADL, rescued pets are provided medical treatment, nutrition, and shelter in a safe, live-release facility until they are matched with their forever families. Through community education and empowerment, ADL advocates for truly responsible pet ownership. An astonishing 7,072 pets’ lives were saved by ADL in the San Antonio area in 2021! Each pet receives accommodations and services, which ADL provides once the pet arrives. ADL operates three San Antonio-based shelter facilities: A 12-acre campus and medical facility on Nacogdoches Road, The Paul Jolly center across from the San Antonio Zoo, and their newest location in Windcrest inside the PetSmart on Fourwinds Drive. The Nacogdoches facility also houses a state-of-the-art animal hospital and a dog park. Naturally, an operation of this size and scope requires funding, and lots of it! ADL is supported through adoption fees, donations, grants, bequests from individuals, and special events to support their facilities and the pets in their care. 36 78209magazine.com
Under the leadership of a strong board of directors, Executive Director Joel McLellan and the team operate ADL 365 days a year. The team consists of development and fundraising, finance and business, operations, lifesaving initiatives, and medical. “We rely heavily on volunteer support for all areas from dog walking, to interacting with the cats and kittens, to kennel cleaning, and fundraising,” says McLellan. “While we continue to receive an outpour of love and support from our community members, it’s important to know that the best way we can continue to fulfill our mission is to receive help getting more pets adopted or assistance in our foster program!” declares McLellan. Volunteer opportunities are available on the ADL website and are ideal for those needing service hours. Programs and services at ADL include adoption, pet intake from sources such as the municipal shelter and surrender/ drop off, spay/neuter, mobile wellness clinics dispatched to high-need areas, no-cost pet services for eligible zip codes, Seniors for Seniors, education, donor events, and fostering. Fostering provides a loving temporary home with a volunteer that has basic knowledge of animal care and will provide food, water, shelter, loving attention, and trips to the ADL clinic for rechecks and medical treatment when necessary. ADL supplies everything needed to care for a foster (food,

Mama’s Cafe Come Home to Mama’s

Sometimes we all need some good old-fashioned comfort food, something hearty and familiar that fills us up and makes us happy. Luckily, one local, beloved restaurant is back in business after a complete renovation of the building and the menu. Mama’s Cafe, on Nacogdoches, reopened last May under new ownership, and the entire building underwent a complete remodel, but the original Americana charm of Mama’s remains. Cappy Lawton was the original owner of Mama’s Cafe when it opened in 1981 but sold his interest in the restaurant in 1987, although he continued to own the building. When Mama’s closed its doors in 2019, he decided to refurbish the building with a vision of bringing the restaurant back to life while maintaining all of the charms that customers have loved throughout the years. Lawton says, “The building was very worn out, so everything had to be redone, but we wanted to redesign it to keep that old-fashioned look while incorporating our Texas theme throughout the restaurant.” During the remodel, Lawton and his team doubled the size of the kitchen, installing state-of-the-art appliances and building a 1,000 square foot beer garden patio to add outdoor seating. “I like that people walk in and say that it hasn’t changed,” Lawton states. He’s very proud of the unique design features and decorations that make the cafe unique. One wall features implement seats from the 1800s, and some of the tractor seats were sourced from out-of-state collectors. The cowboy room is also an exciting space featuring actual branding irons from area ranchers, along with cowboy boots and hats. The menu at Mama’s Cafe underwent some changes but stays true to the South Texas comfort food that made it a local favorite. Breakfast and lunch are served every day, and dinner is served Tuesdays through Sundays. Breakfast features some homestyle favorites and a few dishes that put Mama’s special spin on the classics. Executive Chef, Gabe Ibarra, has been serving up great food for the Lawton Restaurant Group for over 18 years and turns out delicious creations like the Huevos Hofbrau, which is essentially migas with hash browns, refried beans, and queso. For the adventurous breakfast connoisseur, Papa’s Breakfast checks all breakfast boxes with chicken fried steak, pancakes, eggs over easy, and hash browns. It’s a hearty way to start the day, and Cappy claims to have the best pancakes and waffles in town. The cafe is also open for lunch and dinner, and you’ll find something for everyone. Mama’s is committed to ensuring that every guest can experience their delicious homestyle Texas comfort food, and most of the dishes can be made gluten-free. Mama’s Cafe feels like a small-town cafe before highways changed the landscape. Lawton says, “Mama’s pays homage to the small-town community.” There is a lot of nostalgia in the restaurant. Still, the quality of the food speaks volumes about Lawton’s dedication to keeping the Mama’s tradition alive while striving to consistently turn out great food that keeps customers coming home to Mama’s.
