Total Re-Do coming to Eisenhauer Road There’s good news and bad about plans to redo Eisenhauer Road from N. New Braunfels to nearly Austin Highway. The good news is, as anyone who drives on Eisenhauer knows, the road truly needs to be totally overhauled. And plans call for a total rebuild of the street. The bad news is Eisenhauer may be closed to all through traffic for months while the work is done, according to a spokesperson for District 10 councilman Marc Whyte. The current estimate is for work to begin in late 2024.

Cooper’s Meat Market

- BUSINESS PROFILE -

A Cut Above the Competition; Cooper’s Meat Market Continues to Focus on Quality By Bruce X. Forey | Photography by Al Rendon

It’s the beef boutique of 78209. Cooper’s Meat Market is celebrating more than a quarter century in business. Their premium selections of Certified Angus Beef, choice aged grainfed beef, and exotic meat attract customers from around the United States.

Cooper’s offers a lot more than meat for home grilling. Their extensive menu includes foods like casseroles and chicken salad, which are prepared fresh in the store and in constant demand. “We’re making chicken salad practically every day because people just love it,” Mike added.

The store was originally founded by Cooper Boddy in 1997. Mike and Tricia Johnson acquired the business from Boddy in 2007, turning it into a ‘09 institution. It’s one of the longerrunning retail operations in Alamo Heights.

Space is limited in the Broadway store, so Mike is selective about adding new food and merchandise. Wagyu beef from Japanese cattle, considered one of the most flavorful and more expensive meats is a hit. Wild game is also a customer favorite.

Cooper’s is truly a family business. Mike and Tricia share managing all aspects of the store’s operations. Son in Law, Pablo Pacheco, has been with the company longer than the Johnson’s owned the store. He oversees many of the cooking duties for Copper’s. In 2018, Cooper’s Meat Market opened a Dallas location with a steakhouse managed by Mike’s son, Michael Johnson. With family being very important to the Johnson’s, Tricia recently scaled back day-to-day involvement to spend more time with grandchildren.

“Customers want healthier meat options such as bison and elk, so we carry quite a bit of that,” said Mike.

“Tricia and I have three children each, and from that, she has nine grandchildren, and I have five,” said Mike. “She really enjoys being part of their lives, so I’m here on a full-time basis.” Mike brings a lot of experience as an entrepreneur. He’s owned retail businesses, including a frame shop and Mexican restaurant. Mike also had a career in commercial real estate. He still holds his license but rarely does transactions these days. Mike has a ranching background but says that doesn’t factor much into the meat sold at Cooper’s. Two different animals, so to speak – he raised cattle, which he says is different from selling meat at a store. But certainly, understanding how quality beef is nurtured is beneficial for running a meat market. He knows what his customers want, and he delivers. “The local grocery stores don’t sell our lines of Certified Angus Beef and grain-fed premium beef,” Mike said. “We have our local regulars, along with many out-of-town customers who stop by and stock up when they visit San Antonio. We also ship our food to clients across the country.”

Cooper’s partnered with New Braunfels Smokehouse and Ultimate Cheesecake Bakery to sell a wide assortment of their products. Cooper’s was one of the first retailers to carry Yeti and still stocks a selection of items in the store. You’ll also find a curated assortment of sides, appetizers, spices, rubs, wine, and beer. The holiday season is a busy time at Cooper’s. The diverse holiday menu is full of mouthwatering selections for gatherings small and large. Many patrons buy extra for a quick meal to feed family and guests. A Cooper’s gift box makes a unique and delicious present for someone during the holiday season. When asked where Mike sees Cooper’s five years from now, he doesn’t plan large-scale changes to the operation, mostly due to space limitations. He’ll instead, “build up” the business model in place. The secret to Cooper’s enduring success is straightforward. “First, customers appreciate the personalized service when shopping at our store,” Mike said. “Plus, we sell among the best, certified beef in the San Antonio area. The selection you find here is just different from any of our local competitors.” Cooper’s Meat Market specializes in party trays and catering yearround. Call (210) 820-3838 or visit the store at 6002 Broadway, Alamo Heights, TX 78209. www.coopersmeatmarket.com. OCTOBER 2023 13

A Caring Personality and Balloons Helps East Coast Native Settle Into 78209 By Bruce X. Forey Photography by Al Rendon

It’s a familiar story – a member of the armed forces gets stationed in San Antonio, is impressed with the Alamo City, and moves here after their service is complete. However, not all establish roots in 78209. But for Michelle Rowe, the people and attractions within the zip code offered everything she wanted to call home. “I’m from the East Coast, and after my military service, I moved to New England. During COVID, I decided to relocate to San Antonio and live in 78209,” Michelle said. “The sense of community reminds me of New England, there are a lot of things to do nearby, and I wanted my two children to attend Alamo Heights schools.”

Alamo Balloons continues to expand. Michelle has a growing list of small business and corporate customers and stays busy doing events with Alamo Heights I.S.D. schools. Her two children think it’s cool their mom owns a balloon design operation. Her kids enjoy hanging out at the store, watching mom create something that makes people happy. “We’re popular with the younger kids. For their little friends, if we know it’s their birthday, we’ll take them a balloon bouquet or will deliver some balloons. I love being able to offer that,” said Michelle. “I also enjoy sharing the joy of balloons with friends

Part of Michelle’s 22-year military career was spent at Kelly Air Force Base serving as an Aeromedical Evacuation Nurse. She traveled all over the globe providing hospital-level care for military personnel and civilians as they were flown to a hospital for specialized medical attention. “We took patients that were typically stabilized but, in the air, it’s way more intense care than what you provide on a rotary winged transport,” said Michelle. “We carried up to 72 patients, with a crew up to seven, usually two flight nurses and three techs.” After an exciting military career, Michelle turned to something completely different for her next chapter in life – she bought a balloon decoration business 17 years ago in New England. After moving to San Antonio two years ago, she renamed it Alamo Balloons and worked to build a customer base. A storefront was part of the plan, but she waited for the right location to come about. Michelle ran the business out of her home and then got a game-changing opportunity doing an event for a local school. “I was doing balloons for Woodridge Elementary School and realized I’m in, I’ve got some name recognition! That’s when I opened my store in Arcadia Grove Shopping Center, in the heart of Alamo Heights,” Michelle said. “I found the right spot, the right size, the right location.” Soon after opening her Arcadia Grove location, she was welcomed by the tight-knit 78209 small business community. “Most of the store owners in the shopping center came over to say hello and wanted me to do events for them,” Michelle added. “We really try to help each other. It’s been fantastic.”

and small businesses colleagues at no charge, just to support what they’re doing.” There’s something about a balloon creation that brings a smile to children and adults. It’s Michelle’s favorite part of the profession. Quite the contrast from the serious business of Aeromedical Evacuation Nurse. “I don’t know of any other job that gives you this much satisfaction and immediate gratification,” Michelle said. “We don’t run into many cranky people. People are celebrating an event, and you get to be a part of that special day.” When the balloons are at rest, Michelle and her children take advantage of what the immediate area offers. There are frequent visits to The DoSeum, Hemifair Park and other popular attractions. During soccer season, spare time is spent time is spent with practice and at the games. To keep up with Michelle and her balloon and her balloon ideas visit her Facebook Page at Alamo Balloons.

Leading by Example by LifeCoachAngel

With insight from Professor Nuno Martins, owner of Atos Jiu-Jitsu Alamo Heights

24

78209Magazine.com

- LEADERSHIP -

Leading by Example “As you become more present in your own life, you will begin to enlighten others by your example.” ― Germany Kent “Do as I say, not as I do” is a phrase that has been around for a long time, and many of us even heard it a lot as children, meaning don’t imitate my behavior but obey my instructions. How hypocritical it is to ask someone to do something you’re not willing to do yourself. It’s very important for leaders to set good examples and be good role models. People who look up to them will be watching everything they say and do, so it’s important always to be aware of that. This is something that Professor Nuno Martins, owner of Atos Jiu-Jitsu Alamo Heights, understands all too well. He says, “Great leaders don’t set out to be leaders; they just are. They’re aware of themselves, have goals, are disciplined, and take action. They’re in constant control over their mind and body; they are on top of themselves. They simply give a good example, are an inspiration, and others choose to follow them.” Leading by example involves conscious decisions that reflect your goals, morals, and ethics, and that you behave and respond in ways that add value and empower others to succeed and grow. “As humans, we are hardwired for connection, to serve each other, serve a purpose, contribute, help, support and be supported, be valued and add value to others. That’s what drives us.” Nuno added. One of my favorite leadership gurus, John C. Maxwell, says that to add value to others, you must first value others. And that’s true, but in order to value others, you must first value yourself. Easier said than done, right? Well, it may surprise you to know that it may be easier done than thought. But where does it come from, and how do we do it? When we talk about valuing ourselves, we’re really talking about self-worth. I’m all too familiar with what it’s like not to value myself. I used to put value in everything else but myself. My career, my hobbies, and the life I had created. I painfully realized that my value - my sense of self - couldn’t come from anything outside of me. It comes from deep within me.

The dictionary defines self-worth as the sense of one’s own value or worth as a person. Notice that it doesn’t say anything about your title, career, relationships, social status, or roles you play – just as a person. Self-worth and valuing yourself go hand in hand with self-respect. This is so important because it gives you the confidence and strength you need to succeed; without it, you are simply placing limitations on yourself. Think about it, how can you expect others to appreciate, value, and respect you if you don’t? This is part of being on top of yourself, so you can be a leader others would want to follow. Here are some ways you can lead by example: • Take extreme ownership. Leaders must own everything in their world. There is no one else to blame. • Live with integrity, even when it’s tough. • Be courageous. Courage is not the absence of fear, it is doing something even though you’re scared. • Failure is an option. Failure is not the opposite of success, it is an integral step toward it. • Have an unwavering purpose. Be relentless, resilient, and persistent; keep taking action. • Be solution-oriented. Search for the opportunity in every problem. • Listen; listening is more powerful than talking, and it creates dialogue and understanding. • Delegate; not just tasks, but trust - this empowers people. • Take care of yourself in every aspect of your life. Your well-being matters. Model it, encourage it. • Be a 360° leader. Be in it, show up, get your hands dirty, lead from within the organization and you will inspire greatness.

Leading by example is contagious. The question is, is yours worth catching? Blessings, LifeCoachAngel
