Photographed by Al Rendon, this month’s curious cover is hard to miss! Nestled in the McNay gardens, Deer is a 12-foot tall sculpture by Cincinnati-born artist Tony Tasset, made of fiberglass, epoxy, and paint. Tasset has focused many of his recent public art endeavors on American vernacular visual culture. For Deer, Tasset has taken the common white-tailed deer and made it larger than life. The surreal juxtaposition of the supersized deer and the viewer dramatizes our relationship to nature and what it means to be human. This clever work explores how we collectively dwell in the landscape but also celebrates the unique environment created when art frames nature. Take a peaceful stroll through the sculpture-filled grounds of the McNay and be sure to say “hi” to our new friend, Deer!

For Ana Montoya, a life fueled by her passion for art, fashion, and beauty are evident when you step into AnArte Gallery. This welcoming and exciting art experience brings a smile to everyone who steps inside - from art educators, collectors, and enthusiasts alike.

“We are excited to welcome these significant births to our community,” said Tim Morrow, President and CEO of San Antonio Zoo. “This baby boom is a testament to the dedication of our incredible animal care staff and a celebration of wildlife diversity from around the world.”

Morrow noted the zoo celebrates all new births; but, some are even more meaningful to securing a future for wildlife due to their conservation status in the wild.

An innovative, 380-seat, 11,000 square-foot restaurant named Carriqui is now open on the site of the old Liberty Bar, at 239 E. Grayson Street. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. It is named after a bird -- the green jay of South Texas. The venue’s owners say the flight path of the carriqui is the inspiration for the menu. Potluck Hospitality owns and operates the eatery. It showcases South Texas foodways—from the Rio Grande Valley to the Texas coast and north to San Antonio. Menu items include fresh seafood from the Gulf, Rio Grandeinspired botana platters, pit-cooked barbacoa and brisket, a masa program, and a robust cocktail and beverage program.

For those who may not know, according to author Cyndy Bartelli, Botana platters begin with a layer of tortilla chips or quesadillas with added layers of refried beans, cheddar cheese, grilled vegetables, a hearty helping of tender beef or chicken fajitas, and random globs of guacamole and sour cream. Salsa is essential. Tortillas, beans, and rice are always present. Some say a botana platter is like nachos on steroids.

According to its website, CNG Engineering is a professional mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design firm that provides master planning, design, and building commissioning services for public and private sector projects across the State of Texas. The gallery hosts a monthly exhibition with rotating artists, specialty cocktails inspired by the artist, along with small bites and music, creating a unique event for art lovers regardless of experience.

AnArte Gallery strives to be accessible to every art lover and offers pieces to fit any taste or budget. So, if you are just beginning your journey and your education as an art collector, you will feel comfortable as you are guided through collections and introduced to diverse artists and unique pieces.

Ana Montoya was working as a successful professional in the cosmetics industry for 20 years when she started to take her dream of owning an art gallery seriously. Ana was born in Nuevo Laredo and moved across the border with her family at the age of four. She grew up inspired by her hard-working grandmother who made a living as a beauty stylist and a seamstress, and her interest in beauty, fashion, and art only grew as she became a young adult, moving to San Antonio to pursue her education and a career in her mid-20’s. It was only in her late-30’s that Ana began to seriously contemplate her desire to open an art gallery to feature local artists. Her first gallery was a small space on Hildebrand, and she began AnArte 21 years with a handful of artists and zero experience. Luckily, Ana’s energy and enthusiasm moved her forward as she made a name for herself within the art community while introducing and promoting local artists.

Most of us have dreamt about starting a business that caters to our passion, but very few get the opportunity to pursue that dream, or just never take the leap of faith. It is a daunting idea, and only the bravest of souls will dare to step out of their security and venture into the unknown. This is the story of one dynamic lady who dared to follow her dream to bring art to the people of ’09 and beyond.

Ana says, “When you walk into AnArte, you will encounter some of the most beautiful art pieces you’ll ever see. The art is happy and colorful, and I guarantee that you will walk out smiling.”

We treat all of our clients equally. I wanted to create a gallery that is warm and inviting so that everyone feels welcome regardless of their socio-economic background.”

On top of running her small business Gail also serves the community by volunteering for the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL), the oldest no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats. “Fostering is so much fun with lots of love as your reward. When you foster, the ADL provides all necessary supplies such as toys, litter, food, and Gail’smedicine.”passionfor fostering kittens has a sweet beginning. “When my nieces and nephew were younger, we would visit the ADL on Saturdays as an adventure and play with the kittens and puppies. The kittens loved to play nonstop, and I thought having this sweet playground in my home would be fun; after I took home my first litter of kittens, I was hooked!

“To foster an animal is a great gift of kindness.” -Unknown.

Fostering Love & Paws in ’09

When asked what her favorite part of planning the event is, Gail said, “I have so much fun working with my friends, neighbors, and local businesses procuring unique items for the Fur Ball silent auction. She adds, “I love the wine and whiskey pull; for $50, you get to pull a surprise bottle of wine or spirits, and some of the bags have surprises!”

“The Foster club meets for lunch quarterly, and we discuss our babies. (Puppies & Kittens). It’s a wonderful new community where we support each other. We share advice, discuss concerns, and learn so much from one another. We babysit for one another, and if there is an emergency, we help each other out.”

By Alexis James Photography by David Teran

Gail wants the ‘09 community to know that there are a lot of opportunities to foster, including fostering bottle babies.

Gail saw a need in the ADL for those who foster and recently started a new organization that helps meet the needs of volunteers.

Gail fostered an inspiring amount of 97 kittens during her first year of volunteering. “Kittens are very easy as they find their litter box almost immediately and rarely have accidents.” Says Gail. “Usually, foster kittens are weaned from their mother and give all their love to you as their caregiver. I love watching them play together; they run, jump, wrestle, and tumble nonstop for 30-45 minutes, then everyone gets in my lap to get love and take a long nap.”

For the last 20 years, Gail Gilliam has fostered kittens in the community and given the gift of love and kindness to hundreds of animals in need. Gail has lived in Alamo Heights since 1979 and is the proud owner of Condominiums Unlimited, where she specializes in condominium association management in 78209 and 78212.

“There’s an urgent need for fosters who can bottle feed kittens and puppies who have lost their mother and are still nursing.”

For over 20 years, Gail has played a vital role in the Animal Defense League of Texas’s most significant fundraising event, the “Fur Ball.” She currently serves as the Silent Auction Chair. “This year, the proceeds from the Fur Ball Gala will help support the Medical Program serving marginalized and underserved sections of San Antonio. This initiative dramatically reduces the roaming per population in these areas.” States Gail.

Gail loves the amazing community and friendships she has built by being a part of the Animal Defense League. When William “Bill” Scanlan, Jr. enlisted in the Army after graduating from Law School in 1966, he joined millions of American men who would be drafted into the military. It was at the height of America’s involvement in what was a very unpopular war. Scanlan was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1942. His family moved to Venezuela when he was three years old. They lived there for about five years, while his dad worked for the U.S. State Department. And then, it was back to Brownsville. While he grew up in that Texas border community, he went to boarding school at Sewanee Military Academy in Tennessee, following in his brother’s footsteps. From there Scanlan went to undergraduate school at the University of Virginia (UVa). When I told him that was a very prestigious university, he laughed and said, “Back then it was known as a party school.”

Scanlan practiced law for decades in San Antonio. He specializes in taxation and trusts and estate planning. Shortly after we talked, he texted me a note, “I joined two lawyers at UT Law School and we represented 3 detainees at GTMO. They didn’t do anything, and were sent home.” He added, “That is an important part of my legal career.”

His wife, Cecil, passed away on February 11, 2021. She had suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. They had been married for 54 years. The couple had two children, William Scanlan, III, and Marguerite Scanlan Ogata.

William “Bill” Scanlan, Jr. Retired Army Captain (right)

He was tasked with traveling throughout South Viet Nam to give lectures to American troops on the Geneva Conventions, the series of treaties on the humane treatment of civilians, prisoners of war (POWs), and soldiers who are otherwise rendered incapable of fighting. His message was simple, yet powerful, don’t shoot innocent civilians.

I Did My Duty, But I’m No Hero.

The Scanlans settled in San Antonio in 78209. As for his military service, Scanlan said, “I did my duty. And here we are. My service made me realize the value of serving your country. You mature very quickly.” But, he emphasized, “I am not a hero.”

After UVa, Scanlan enrolled in law school at the University of Texas, in Austin. “After I graduated from law school, I got married. I had met my wife, Cecil, in Virginia.”

In 1997, Scanlan and Cecil took a trip to Southeast Asia. They visited Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam. “It helped close the circle for Cecil and me. The people were so warm, welcoming, and friendly,” he recalls.

Shortly after his marriage, Scanlan enlisted in the Army. His plan was to go on to officer candidate school He thought his law degree would help. And it did. Following basic and advanced infantry training, his commanding officer, who had learned Scanlon had a law degree, asked if he would be interested in becoming a JAG officer (Judge Advocate General’s Corps). Scanlan said yes. In late 1969, Scanlan was sent to Viet Nam. His posting there followed the exposé by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh about the My Lai massacre. More than 300 unarmed Vietnamese civilians had been slaughtered by U.S. troops in that small village. Only six people survived. The story triggered outrage in the U.S.

He spent a year in Viet Nam. When he returned home, his four-year commitment to the Army was fulfilled, and he left the service. About that time, he told me, he’d read a book by Marian F Novak entitled “Lonely Girls with Burning Eyes.” It was about the struggles wives of soldiers who were fighting in Viet Nam faced back home. “I realized that as challenging as my tour was, it was so much tougher on my wife. She wouldn’t even tell people I was in Viet Nam. Instead, when people asked about me, she would tell them I was on a business trip.”

Anxiety and Fear:

It’s also no secret this past school year ended in horrifying tragedy for Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, and it has been difficult for parents to shield their children from those headlines as well as others across the country.

A new school year can spark many emotions for both parents and students. Unfortunately, those may also include anxiety and fear.

Some of this could be typical anxiety related to the start of a new school year as anxiety often accompanies changes: new school, new teacher or classroom, making new friends, etc.

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has pediatric psychologists trained to treat anxiety. If you feel as if your child’s anxiety or fear is becoming overwhelming or it is taking them away from things they enjoy, seek help.

I also want to encourage parents to trust their judgment. If you are feeling uncertain about what your child is experiencing, know there is support available.

So, as parents get their back-to-school shopping done, ensuring their children are equipped with all of the essential supplies and new clothes, it’s equally, if not more important, for parents to ensure they are able to spot and help with any difficult emotions their child may be expressing ahead of a new school year. One of the best ways to do this – talk to your children and pay Parentsattention.know their children best. If your child is dealing with some emotions they may not be able to express, look for changes.

For children, anxious cognitions (thoughts) tend to be about the future. They may ask a lot of “what if” questions, seem a bit more on edge or tense, they may complain about stomachaches or headaches, or you may notice changes in their Anotherbehavior.wayto

Parents can help prepare their children by talking through these anxious feelings and normalizing this experience for Therechildren.isalso room to reduce this anxiety through practice. Practice getting to bed earlier, waking up, and ‘getting ready’ for school with your child. Routines and familiarity can calm worried children by providing a sense of predictability in a world full of change.

In addition to the typical anxiety that a new school year brings, children now face another challenge, feeling safe at school. Unfortunately, this has become a very real fear for many kids. So, parents will want to be able to ensure their safety. Check with your child’s school or district and ask them what their protocols are and what plans they have in place to keep students and teachers safe. Parents can use that information to talk with their children. Make a plan with them, so they know who and how they can go to a trusted adult at school if feeling unsure or unsafe. Create practical steps to take these actions.

Eyeball (or Nose) Test Does your carpet look (or smell) like it needs to be cleaned?

Dirt and grime act like sandpaper, eating away at carpet fiber every time you walk on it. But just how often should you get your carpets and rugs professionally cleaned? There are a few factors to consider.

Pets who travel between outside and inside track dirt and allergens that your carpet and rugs will absorb. The heavier traffic your carpets and rugs receive, the dirtier they will get.

Not only do dirty carpets and rugs look bad, but not getting them cleaned consistently enough can shorten their lifespan.

And as most pet owners know, the occasional accident is not always avoidable.

Who Uses Your Carpets?

Kids have a lot of spills and messes that can affect the cleanliness of your rugs and carpet. Additionally, babies and

Carpet Warranty If you have a newer carpet, it might have come with a manufacturer warranty. Be sure to read all the terms and conditions to ensure you are in compliance and can take advantage of that warranty if the need arises. Most require annual cleanings by a professional cleaning company as a warranty condition.

Dirt begins accumulating at the base of your carpet long before it becomes visible, which will be much sooner for lighter carpets and rugs. As a rule of thumb, you want to clean your carpets before they get to this stage. Your carpet absorbs and clings to smells from spills and accidents over time, which tend to be more noticeable to your guests when entering your home. Regular cleanings can keep your carpet and rugs looking and smelling fresh.

How Often Should You Have Your Carpets Cleaned

Seasonal Needs Whether your carpet is due for cleaning can also depend on seasonal and environmental factors. If your area has received a lot of rain or snow lately, it’s more likely that mud or other dirt has been tracked into your home. Additionally, if you suffer from seasonal allergies having your carpet cleaned could be a source of relief. Carpet and rugs act like giant filters that absorb pollen from the air, but once it gets full, it releases them back with every step. A good rule of thumb is to have your carpet and rugs cleaned annually to maintain warranties and keep your home looking and smelling fresh. If any of the above factors apply, you may want to consider more frequent cleanings every 6-8 months.

young children spend a lot of time on the carpet, and you want to keep it fresh and clean for them. Homes with children are also recommended to have more frequent cleanings.

It’s often dangerous to use the word “authentic” when describing a restaurant and its cuisine. People may interpret authenticity differently depending on their experiences and backgrounds, but one local Mexican restaurant has stayed true to its roots throughout the years, serving up family recipes with consistency and earning rave reviews from diners for nearly 20 years.

Soluna Authentic Mexican Food Day or Night in ‘09

| solunasa.com - EAT IN ‘09SEPTEMBER 2022 39

Also outstanding was the Lump Crab and Avocado Ensalada with sweet lump crab meat blended with crema and fine herbs and flanked on one side with sliced tomatoes dressed in a basil mayo aioli and sliced avocado drizzled with a tomato mayo dressing on the other. The flavors were so fresh and delicious that you’ll want to use every last bite of the accompanying toasted bread to mop up the remaining dressing as you devour this salad. The highlight was most definitely the Huachinango Soluna al ajillo. This decadent dish featured a generous filet of red snapper lightly dusted in flour and sautéed in butter, garlic, and white wine. The intense aroma of the sautéed garlic assaulted the senses as soon as it hit the table, and it is served with sautéed vegetables, white rice, and plantains as well. It was truly one of the most wonderful and crave-worthy seafood dishes that I’ve ever had.

It was Gerardo’s grandmother who passed down the delicious recipes for the signature dishes featured on the menu at Soluna. She operated a catering company in Mexico City, and taught Jerry’s mother, Maria del Carmen, how to cook. When Jesse and Maria del Carmen came to San Antonio, they decided to bring the flavors of Mexico to their American neighbors, and the Calvillo restaurant legacy began. Today, Gerardo and his energetic Soluna restaurant team continue to bring his grandmother’s recipes to life. The restaurant is a welcoming and colorful tribute to the Mexican culture, and it is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and also serves weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Everyone has a favorite dish at Soluna, and although it is hard to deviate from what you love, the detours of flavor that you can experience at Soluna are worth the wander.

7959 Broadway #204 (@ Sunset)

One recent visit featured the incredibly fresh Ceviche Soluna with tender chunks of red snapper marinated with onions, serrano peppers, fresh herbs, and lime juice, topped with a delicate fan of thinly sliced avocado and drizzled with crema.

Soluna has become an Alamo Heights icon for its vivacious atmosphere and its outstanding Mexican cuisine. Gerardo Calvillo is one of the sons carrying on the family restaurant legacy that his father, Jesse Calvillo, began in 1978 when he opened La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Soluna opened in 2003 on the corner of Broadway and Sunset, and it quickly became a neighborhood favorite introducing locals to the nuanced and elevated flavors of traditional and authentic Mexican dishes that go beyond the boundaries of Tex-Mex.

Soluna has a beautiful bar serving some of the best margaritas in town, but the Calvillo family’s claim to fame is by far their chispas. The chispa was created by Gerardo’s father, Jesse, at their sister restaurant, El Mirasol, one day while hanging out with friends. It is an incredibly simple, but powerful, cocktail that features high-end tequila, fresh lime and orange juice, and organic agave syrup. A chispa, which translates to “spark” in Spanish, is not as sweet as a traditional margarita that uses Triple Sec or sweet and sour syrup, so it is light and refreshing while packing a proverbial spark to the tastebuds.

Soluna’s menu is expansive and eclectic, and you’ll find a few familiar Mexican dishes along with their outstanding interior and coastal Mexican fare. Gerardo Calvillo is proud of this team and strives to provide his guests with the ultimate Mexican dining experience. He says, “Our quality and our presentation are superior, and we value our guests and treat them like family, the way that our neighbors have welcomed our family business for years.”

Elizabeth Chambers, Founder & CEO of Bird Bakery, knows all about the importance of what it takes to show up for your team. She understands that you can’t ask people to do something that you are not willing to do.

Lack of Strategic Thinking

Poor Communication

Is your leadership building up others or tearing them down?

You’ve stepped into a leadership role, as such, it is important to recognize your own actions first. Being a good leader requires a certain type of mindset, it requires you to value yourself. When you truly value yourself, you can then truly value others because now you can translate that type of value and worth to every person and every team member as you work together towards a common goal.

I invite you to take this 5-minute leadership quiz to understand your personal leadership style. Scan the QR code to take your next step in developing your leadership skills and becoming a more effective leader.

“My team is my most valuable asset. Of course, we have our recipes, we have our brand, and we have over a decade of success, but at the end of the day, without our customers and our team, we have nothing. So really, to me, when you fail to recognize the value in your team and fail to make them feel valued, you fail at leading. Five years ago, generally speaking, the majority of restaurant staff came to work for the paycheck, but now, more than ever, they’re showing up for the company culture and because they care. They’re showing up for camaraderie. They’re showing up because it might be the only thing that gives them a sense of connection. I think that selfleadership is more imperative than ever and I truly believe that no one’s going to commit to a company or a leader who doesn’t care or doesn’t listen.”

If you don’t, you may find yourself exhibiting some of the following behaviors:

Leading in a Vacuum

- I AM A LEADER -

Leadership is a choice, not a title or a position. Leadership is not to be confused with authority. According to Simon Sinek, “there are individuals that have no authority but are great leaders because they have chosen to look after the person to the left and the right of them.” Good leadership requires the respect of those you serve. Your business and your team are counting on you.

My name is Angel Santiago, and I’m a teacher of transformation, a mindset coach, and a leadership facilitator. Feel free to connect with me via social media under the hashtag #LifeCoachAngel, or you can email me at angsanti@icloud.com

SEPTEMBER 2022 41

Poor Time Management and Delegation Poor Conflict Resolution Skills Lack of Leadership Development Who’s going to show up for that leader? A leader that isn’t showing up for themselves can’t really show up for others.

Great leadership is self-leadership. You cannot give anything to others that you don’t give to yourself first.

In my previous article, I discussed the impact self-awareness and presence of mind have on a leader. Because when the mind is aware and prepared, you are able to put aside all distractions and pay careful attention to whatever you are doing in the present moment. For you to be successful at it and see results, you must make time for it - you must practice.
