Introducing CHRISTUS Children’s.

Same hope. Same healing. New name. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is now CHRISTUS Children’s. Why? Because we’re the first and only San Antonio hospital built just for kids and expectant moms, but we’re so much more than a hospital. Our care extends far past the city limits and we are part of a world-class healthcare network. Our new name better represents who we are and the purpose we pursue every day. CHRISTUSchildrens.org

- BUSINESS PROFILE -

WOOF GANG BAKERY & GROOMING ALAMO HEIGHTS Finding Success Serving Dogs and Humans By Bruce X. Forey | Photography by Al Rendon

What does one mom do when looking for a new challenge? She buys a dog grooming business. It didn’t matter she had never groomed a dog. She had pros to expertly do that. Emily Bodine Conrad knows how customers, both dogs and humans, want and should be treated. She saw Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming Alamo Heights as an ideal outlet to implement her vision of superior customer service. She became the official owner of the Lincoln Heights location on October 1, 2022. During the past year, Emily succeeded in taking an established operation to another level. “My kids are now at school during the day, and I was ready for a new opportunity,” Emily said. “I knew I’d be guided in the right direction. After walking into the store, I had this feeling this is where I was supposed to be.” After purchasing Woof Gang, Emily focused on streamlining operations and building relationships with customers. She identified ways to shorten the time for an appointment. She hired more employees. Trained all employees on Emily’s brand of customer service. She worked with her groomers on how to engage with clients to make them feel special.

Woof Gang also sells irresistible stuffed toys and a collection of designer dog collars. Emily is the mom of four doodles. Before Woof Gang, her doodles never used to wear collars. Now, all four sport the latest fashionable collars and regularly get other perks such as sampling freshly baked treats or playing with new toys.

“This is much more about the customer service side than grooming or dog food. I was committed to putting the culture in the place I thought the business needed,” Emily said. “I spend a lot of time training my team on the importance of building relationships. As our sign says, “your neighborhood pet store.” We want Woof Gang to be the kind of place where a customer is more of a friend.”

Emily grew up in Dallas. After attending college in Memphis, Tennessee, she moved to New York City to work for a publishing company. There, she learned the importance of how strong relationships create loyal customers. She moved back to Dallas and implemented her Big Apple experience in a successful real estate career. Emily wanted to be closer to her parents, so she moved with her husband and children to San Antonio. With her daughter now 12 and her son 9 years old, Emily felt the time was right for a new challenge.

To create that kind of culture, Emily places a lot of emphasis on making Woof Gang a positive and fun place to work. “A happy place is important. We laugh all the time,” said Emily. “If we’re happy, our clients, the dogs and their owners, will be happy too.”

Even while working up to 12 hours days, Emily finds balance with career, mom, and wife. The work ethic, vision, and business strategy are paying off. Emily says business has increased significantly since she purchased Woof Gang.

Dog grooming is an important service, but Woof Gang is a true pet store. It offers a variety of high-quality dog food and treats. A specialty is the baked treats that look good enough for people to eat.

“In real estate, I fixed houses and then sold them for a profit. I’ve always liked to take on projects I could improve with my ideas,” Emily added. “With Woof Gang, I wasn’t exactly sure how I was going to do it. Every day, I get up and reset. It isn’t a house, it’s a pet store. It’s basically the same thing, just a different version.”

“Our focus really is on what the customer needs. A lot of people don’t even know we offer grooming. Not everybody has a dog. They come in, look around, and purchase treats for the dogs of their friends.”

Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Alamo Heights is located at 999 E. Basse Rd, in the Lincoln Heights Shopping Center. For a grooming appointment or to learn about other services, call (210) 822-9663. SEPTEMBER 2023 13

- MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS -

Former TV Anchor and Emerging Real Estate Pro Writes About Life for 78209 Magazine By Bruce X. Forey Photography by Al Rendon

My name is Bruce X. Forey and I’m a new contributing writer for 78209 Magazine. My family’s journey to the 78209 community began 11 years ago when we moved here for our children to attend Alamo Heights ISD schools. We found a wonderful home in Oak Park. Niche.com now rates Oak Park/Northwood as the best neighborhood in San Antonio and Top 10 in Texas. Oak Park neighbors are very friendly, and we always see familiar faces on walks and runs. I’m a business supporter of the Oak Park/ Northwood Neighborhood Association, which does impressive work advocating to keep our community an excellent place to live.

love for college sports, especially rooting for her alma mater, the Texas Tech Raiders. We are a college house divided and have a house flag that says so. Games between our two schools were sometimes uneasy situations. We aren’t as serious now, but the house divided took a new turn. Our son, Jake, is a graduating senior at Texas A&M University. So, college sports will always be competitive and fun at the Forey household. Our youngest son, Zane, is a sophomore at Alamo Heights High School and plays on the Junior Varsity football team. It remains to be seen where he’ll attend college. If he becomes an Oklahoma Sooner, we’ll need family counseling for our house divided.

As many have said, 78209 is like a small town in a big city. You experience a high-quality lifestyle with shops, restaurants, and employers nearby without having to get on busy highways like Loop 410 or Hwy 281. My primary occupation is real estate agent with Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper REALTORS. My favorite part of this business is helping people. Real estate is about building relationships and trust and solving problems. Whether buying or selling, everyone has a unique situation. I listen to their needs and collaborate to find a solution. I take pride in providing excellent customer service. Career development is important, and, thus far, I’ve completed training as a Luxury Home Specialist and Military Relocation Professional. I invite you to sign up for my lifestyle real estate newsletter at bruceX.forey.com. Prior to real estate, I led communications and marketing departments for two utility companies. I managed teams to develop strategies to drive brand and promote product awareness. I worked with peers to implement the plans and reported results to executives and board members. Through this experience, I’m comfortable working with clients from different socio-economic backgrounds. I transitioned into the corporate world after a 10year career as a broadcast journalist, where I was a news anchor, reporter, and producer. Writing was a big part of my skill set in TV news or business communications. From that experience, I’ve explored freelance writing opportunities, including now for 78209 Magazine. For education, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and earned an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America. My lovely wife, Mary Hitt Forey, is a successful executive at USAA. She does an amazing job balancing a demanding career while being an attentive and caring mother to our two sons and two dogs. One thing that makes our marriage interesting is Mary’s

Our two dogs are Paisley, a 14-year-old West Highland Terrier, and Brutus, our rescue Golden/Lab mix that a dog therapist diagnosed as “not comfortable in his own skin.” We love them both and their unique personalities. For leisure, we enjoy watching sports and dining out, mostly at ‘09 restaurants. I volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul at St. Peter Prince of the Apostle Catholic Church. As a family, we look for opportunities to volunteer at Haven for Hope. I like to fly fish but wish I had more time. For exercise, I cycle and play tennis at the Alamo Heights tennis league. Listening to my stereo system is my favorite way to relax. With this hobby, I’m a member of the River City Audio Club, a group of audiophile aficionados who like talking music and stereo gear. And, of course, I enjoy writing and am very thankful to 78209 Magazine Publisher, Cathleen Lane, for giving me the opportunity to meet interesting people in our community and tell their stories. Dear Friends, Anniversaries are celebrations of a journey. This year marks an important milestone for The Village at Incarnate Word as we celebrate our 35th anniversary! It is a momentous occasion, and we are grateful for the trust and support of everyone who has contributed to our success over the past three and half decades, especially our founders, The Congregation of Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The original convent, or Motherhouse, for the Congregation was built in 1899. Years later, in 1986, the leadership of the Congregation assiduously planned for better ministering to the growing number of retired Sisters and the people of San Antonio. The Sisters demolished their Motherhouse and built their retirement community. On September 8, 1988, The Village at Incarnate Word welcomed its first residents. Since its founding, The Village at Incarnate Word has been a community dedicated to its mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all those we serve. This dedication to our mission has created a journey filled with joy, growth, and meaningful connections. Certainly, we have faced many challenges, like the pandemic, changing market trends, and global economic turbulence. However, these challenges have not deterred our dedication to one another. Together, as residents, families, staff, and partners, we learned, innovated, and moved forward, always seeking to provide an environment where our residents flourish. As we look to the future, our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents remains as strong as ever, and we look forward to continuing the legacy of our founders for years to come. We will build upon that legacy by investing in our people, services, technology, building renovations, and processes to ensure we deliver the best possible retirement living for the people of San Antonio. The Village at Incarnate Word is the only Catholic 501(c)(3) nonprofit retirement community that offers a full continuum of care in San Antonio and South Texas. Our services include independent living, two levels of assisted living, long-term and short-term skilled nursing, memory care, and personal assistance care through our nonprofit ministry, Sisters Care In-Home Care. Although the faces within The Village at Incarnate Word have changed through the years, the legacy of each resident lives on beyond their years. Their lives inspire us to do better. Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been a part of our journey. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with you and look forward to many more years of growth and success together. We welcome you to tour The Village at Incarnate Word. Please call (210) 829-7561 to schedule a tour. Interested in volunteering with us? Contact us at giving@thevillageiw.org to inquire about volunteer opportunities. Kindest Regards,
