Seasons 52, a fresh grill and wine bar, opened in San Antonio on Saturday, May 20.

Seasons 52 is a seasonal fresh grill and wine bar that specializes in oak-fire grilling and brick-oven roasting with all dishes fewer than 595 calories. Menu items are handcrafted using 100 percent fresh, never frozen, whole produce and thoughtfully sourced meats and seafood. These dishes encourage guests to feel good about their choices at every course without having to sacrifice flavor, with options including an assortment of flatbreads, such as Pesto Chicken and Fresh Mozzarella, as well as freshly prepared entrées, like Cedar Plank-Roasted Salmon, Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops and Wood-Grilled Filet Mignon. Eight Mini Indulgence desserts are offered in small portions served in a miniature glass and offer the perfect amount to satisfy a sweet tooth, with selections including Cookies ‘N’ Cream, Belgian Chocolate S’mores, and Raspberry Chocolate Chip Cannoli.

The restaurant’s menu changes four times a year to offer ingredients sourced at peak freshness and flavor. Upon opening, Seasons 52 in San Antonio will feature its summer menu, with seasonally inspired offerings such as Watermelon and Tomato Salad, Summer Corn Soup and Wood-Grilled Corn, Aged Cheddar, and Spiced Bacon Flatbread.

The vibrant Wine Bar pours from an award-winning list designed to complement the menu. Guests have the freedom to explore new styles with “Drink Them Before They’re Famous” – a collection of wines from up-and-coming producers. In addition, guests can enjoy seasonal rotating wine flights, currently highlighting Prisoner wines. The Wine Bar also serves cocktails made with fresh ingredients. Signature cocktails include Hawaiian Pineapple

Cosmopolitan, Cucumber Basil Smash, and Rosé Lemonade, as well as the summer menu exclusives Watermelon Margarita and Bourbon Sour featuring Brother’s Bond Bourbon. A lively Happy Hour offered Monday through Thursday from 3 – 6 p.m., features $6 glasses of wine, $7 cocktails and $12 wine and flatbread pairings.

Seasons 52 in San Antonio is located at 255 E. Basse Road in the Alamo Quarry Market. The new restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Sundays, Monday through Saturday 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. Reservations are recommended but not required. Private dining space is available for both seated and reception-style events. In addition, Seasons 52 offers a Green Box at-home dining experience that serves four to six in a convenient takeout box.

The restaurant will bring 100 new jobs to the area. Roles to be filled include servers, bartenders, and hosts, among others.

The Lawton Family of Restaurants Celebrates 50 Years

Fifty years ago, Cappy Lawton opened The Quarter House, near San Antonio College. Since then, the Lawton family has opened 33 restaurants, including Cappy’s and Cappyccino’s on Broadway, La Fonda on Main, Mama’s Café, and now Jingu House at the Japanese Tea Garden. Dr. Kirsten Smith

The Doctor is Back in ‘09

Born at Wilford Hall while her father was stationed in San Antonio, Dr. Kirsten Smith is a third-generation resident of Alamo Heights. Her grandmother lived on College Blvd., and although Kirsten spent her early childhood in Helotes, her family moved back to Alamo Heights, where she graduated from Alamo Heights High School.

Dr. Smith attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia, earning her undergraduate degree in Biology, Natural Sciences & Mathematics. Her path then led her to medical school back home in San Antonio at the U.T. Health Science Center and she pursued her residency in general surgery in Portland before returning, once again, to begin her career in the community she loves.

She recently left her position as the Hyperbaric and Wound Director at Methodist Hospital after 16 years to begin a new chapter in her career to partner with Dr. Ryan O’Quinn at the South Texas Skin Cancer Center. Dr. Smith specializes in wound care, and her passion is helping those patients with the most severe wound issues that have been resistant to traditional treatments. She brings her expertise to her new venture, South Texas Skin & Wound, and practices the most modern and cutting-edge treatments and technologies to help patients with a variety of wound conditions and issues. Her clinic manages wound care for patients from pediatrics to geriatrics and specializes in wounds such as those caused by diabetic ulcers and surgical wounds that won’t heal. Her office is located in The Courtyard at Brackenridge Park, and she loves working in the same neighborhood that she also calls home.

Kirsten has lived in her current home on Brightwood Place for 15 years now and says that there was a certain nostalgia in choosing to move back to the area after returning from Portland. She is an avid art collector, and her townhome feels like a cozy and intimate modern art gallery. The space is full of bright, eclectic, and funky pieces that pop from every wall, and she loves living in a community where everyone seems to know one another.

She says, “Everyone I love lives in Alamo Heights. My close friends have become my family, and there is nowhere else I’d rather live and work.”

Her previous position with Methodist Hospital gave her the opportunity to really dive deep into the specialty of wound care, but she worked very long hours building her career, so she didn’t have much time for herself. With her new endeavor, Dr. Smith plans to put all of her professional energy into bringing the most advanced wound care treatments to her patients and has recently been recognized for her success in using Icelandic cod skin to treat the most difficult open wounds. She has even had the opportunity to speak at conferences in Iceland and,

most recently, at the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care in Maryland, outlining her process and success in utilizing this breakthrough treatment.

Personally, Kirsten plans to spend more time traveling and enjoying her free time with friends. She is a wine and champagne connoisseur, and she is looking forward to her trip to France this fall to go wine tasting and explore the Champagne region. She is excited for this new professional chapter in her life and the opportunity to spend more time discovering new local businesses and patronizing her favorite iconic Alamo Heights area restaurants, and basically living life to its fullest in ‘09.

A CELEBRATION OF LEARNING IN AHISD

The annual Alamo Heights Festival of Learning and Culture Night was held earlier this Spring at Alamo Heights High School.

The event is a hands-on celebration of what AHISD students are learning in K-12 classrooms, clubs, groups, fine arts programs, and sports teams and how that learning puts into practice the AHISD Profile of a Learner.

Culture Night is an opportunity for families from across Alamo Heights ISD to come together to share and celebrate the cultural variety that makes our community unique and strong.

NATIONAL AND STATE CHAMPION CHEER

Alamo Heights High School cheer won two national championships at the UCA National Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida.

Varsity earned their second consecutive national championship in the Super Varsity DI Non-Tumbling Game Day Division.

Junior Varsity earned their first national title in the Large JV Game Day Division.

AHHS cheer also won a state championship in January at the 2023 UIL State Spirit Championships in Fort Worth.

BEN KEENAN HAS A CAR-4-ALL-SEASONS!

Ben Keenan, English Language Arts teacher and Department Chair at Alamo Heights HS, will be driving in style this coming year thanks to Principle Auto Group.

He was surprised with four vehicles by the local auto dealer, which believes in the importance of celebrating teachers. Annually they elevate the driving experience for the AHISD District Teacher of the Year, providing them with a vehicle to use each season.

Keenan is the AHISD 2023 District Teacher of the Year and the AHISD nominee for the Region 20 ESC Secondary Educator of the Year and Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

We can never know when a disaster may happen. Proper planning is the first step in handling an emergency situation and keeping your pets safe during a disaster is no exception. If you live in a disaster prone area, it’s especially important to have a plan ready and a place to house your pets once a crisis hits.

Keep In Mind

Here’s a list of things you should keep in mind when putting together your family’s pet disaster plan:

• Remember, unless your pet is a certified service animal, like a dog for the visually impaired, you will NOT be able to take your pet to a Red Cross Shelter. Prepare a list of vet clinics and boarding kennels that may be able to take your pet(s) in case of a disaster.

• Some hotels and motels have “pet friendly” policies. If you get advance warning of a disaster, make reservation immediately.

• Friends and family outside the affected disaster area might also be a good resource for safe pet boarding in an emergency.

• If you’ve been placed under a disaster warning, don’t waste precious time looking for your pets. Make sure your animals are inside and wearing collars with current ID tags.

• Prepare a pet emergency supply kit and make sure each family member knows where it is.

• A supply of pet food and treats

• Drinkable water in plastic bottles

• Can opener (for canned food)

• Pet medications & medical records. Store them in a waterproof container.

• Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers

• Pet beds and toys (if you have room)

• Current photos of your pet in case they get lost

• The name and contact information for your veterinarian

Our Shelter Paws program lets you take a dog for the dayor even a few hours - in the hopes of making that dog more friendly and adoptable, and giving the dog a break from the shelter! Take a walk in the park, go for a hike or a run, watch a movie at home, or get a puppuccino!

The Cottage Bringing Irish Charm to ‘09

There’s just something so cozy and welcoming about an Irish pub. No matter where in the world it might be located, if the pub holds true to the soul of Irish hospitality, then you’re bound to feel at home. Luckily, that Irish spirit can be found right here in the Alamo Heights area at The Cottage Irish Pub & Eatery.

Located on Broadway near Pershing, The Cottage has transformed the space previously occupied by Picante Grill. The pub is owned by Gina Capinelli and Phil Bentley. Gina grew up in Passage East, a small fishing village situated on Waterford Harbour in southwest Ireland, and she moved to San Antonio in 2006. Phil is from Manchester, England, and he owned a popular cocktail bar in Austin before moving to San Antonio when the pandemic hit. The couple had the concept for The Cottage, and the closed-down restaurant space gave them the inspiration to bring their idea to life. The duo worked closely with a local carpenter while leaning on Gina’s background in art and design. In fact, Gina painted all of the murals and the signage throughout the pub, and she continues to add little Irish touches here and there to create an authentic and cozy atmosphere where everyone is welcome and the staff treats you like an old friend.

The Cottage opened its doors in late September of last year and welcomed the community with a huge grand opening Halloween party. The pub features a beautiful, Irish-inspired, solid wood bar in the main room, along with cozy seating in the “living room,” where you can enjoy live music several nights a week, including a Celtic Jam Session that takes place every Wednesday, and traditional Irish music on Fridays. There is also a back bar in the garden room that can be closed off and rented out for events and special occasions, or you can relax on the open-air patio and enjoy a pint of Guinness in the perfect South Texas weather.

Gina and Phil have truly captured the spirit of a quaint Irish pub here in San Antonio, and they also feature some of the best food in the area. Working closely with their executive chef, Danny Ansualda, the team has created a scratch menu comprised of Irish standards and tried and true pub favorites. Bring the besties, or the family, in and sit down to a feast of Cottage Pie, Bangers & Mash, Guinness Beef Stew, Fish ‘n Chips, or Corned Beef & Cabbage Boxty. The menu has several sandwiches, burgers, and salads to choose from also, and they even have a special menu for the little leprechauns.

Gina loves the ‘09 community and says, “We have been welcomed with open arms. Our regulars are like family, and it seems like everyone knows everyone else, and that’s what Irish hospitality is all about.”

The history of the Irish pub, short for public house, dates back to when people fed their neighbors in their own homes, and local musicians would come in for impromptu jam sessions. The concept grew to be more than just a bar and more than just a restaurant. A true pub is where people can come together to share social communion and community with friends and neighbors. In fact, when researching her family’s genealogy, Gina discovered that her great, great-grandmother had owned a pub in County Cork in the early 1900s, so it has been in her blood for generations.

The Cottage always has something going on, which keeps things interesting. You can show off your trivia skills on Monday nights for their Pub Quiz, participate in Games Night on Tuesdays with darts tournaments and billiards challenges, or come hungry for Steak & Pint night on Thursdays. The pub also features a weekend brunch, and on Sundays you can come dressed in your Sunday best and join them for Afternoon Tea from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

You’ll find a place in every major city that labels itself an “Irish Pub,” but at The Cottage Irish Pub & Eatery, you can be sure that the beer will be cold, the food will be fresh, and the hospitality will be authentically Irish.
