Nos últimos dois anos, o fotógrafo Araquém Alcântara, 64, dedicou-se a uma missão: retratar o sertão do Brasil. Para isso, não poupou a sola do sapato – nem os pneus do carro. Fez dez viagens, percorreu 100 mil quilômetros e bateu milhares de fotos. O resultado está em seu 47º livro, Veredas, e na exposição homônima, em cartaz na capital paulista até o fim deste mês. Obstinado, o “fotógrafo andarilho”, como gosta de ser chamado, caminhou pelas regiões mais recônditas, passando por lugares pouco ou nada conhecidos, como Serra das Confusões (PI), Buriti Cristalino (BA), Catimbau (PE) e Vão de Almas (GO). “Eu renego as estradas de asfalto. Naquele momento vivemos a felicidade”, conta.

Para escolher as 69 fotos que estão no livro, o autor e o curador Eder Chiodetto partiram de uma pré-seleção de 1,5 mil imagens. Feitas em preto e branco, foram impressas em quadritone – um tom terroso. “Eu quis retratar o sertão como o palco de uma grande tragédia, tal como fez Guimarães Rosa”, justifica Araquém. Já a exposição tem uma amostra ainda menor: são 15 registros, alguns com até dois metros de altura. “É lindo ver as coisas em alto estilo. Meu ego está pra lá de Marrakesh”, brinca ele, que não expunha no Brasil há dez anos. E, como interpretar o País é o seu ofício, não lhe faltam novos projetos. As paisagens, os pescadores, as águas, o programa Mais Médicos e a Mata Atlântica são alguns dos temas sobre os quais ele promete se debruçar nos próximos meses. In the last two years, photographer Araquém Alcântara, 64, has dedicated himself to one mission: portraying the backlands of Brazil. To do so, he didn’t spare the soles of his shoes – or the tires of his car. He made ten trips, traveled 100,000 kilometers, and took thousands of photos. The result is in his 47th book, Veredas, and in the exposition of the same name, open now in the São Paulo capital through the end of this month. The stubborn “wandering photographer”, as he likes to be called, walked through the most hidden recesses of the region, passing through little known or unknown places, such as Serra das Confusões (PI), Buriti Cristalino (BA), Catimbau (PE), and Vão de Almas (GO). “I reject the asphalt roads. I decided to get to know this country with my heart. My map of Brazil is made up of names of magical places,” he philosophizes. Araquém is considered one of the best nature photographers in the country. But Veredas, in addition to landscapes and animals, features portraits of those he met in his wanderings. Since he visits some places several times, he celebrates many reunions. “The other day, I went to visit Raimundo in Rio Grande do Norte. He prepared shrimp, I offered a whiskey. In that moment, we experienced happiness,” he says. To choose the 69 photos that are in the book, author and curator Eder Chiodetto started with the pre-selection of 1500 images. Taken in black and white, they were printed in quadritone – an earthy tone. “I wanted to portray the backlands as the stage of a great tragedy, like Guimarães Rosa did,” Araquem reasons. The expositions shows an even smaller sample: there are 15 frames, some up to 2 meters in height. “It’s beautiful to see the things in high style. My ego is miles high,” he jokes – he hasn’t exhibited in Brazil in ten years. And, as interpreting the country is his craft, there is no lack of new projects. The landscapes, the fishermen, the waters, the “Mais Médicos” program, and the Atlantic Forest are some of the topics he promises to address in the coming months. Everything indicates that the 48th book will be coming soon.

“You may even think you know me, but you’ll be astonished when you hear me sing,” says the voice of Malu Mader in the first minutes of Cássia, a biographical film by Paulo Henrique Fontenelle. The phrase, written in the recovered book of notes by the artist, explains what the director wanted to capture in the two hours of the documentary, which sheds light on the revolutionary Cássia Eller, who died in 2001 at 39. The film, which debuts on January 29 and has participation of artist as Nando Reis and Malu Mader, was conceived when Fontenelle noticed the lack of biographical material about the singer from Rio. “I was at home listening to Relicário and I started wanting to know more about her life,” he explains. Over the four years of production of the feature-length documentary, notebooks, personal videos, and recordings of television programs were consulted by the director. The first person who he contacted was Maria Eugênia, Cássia’s ex-partner, who stipulated only two requirements: that the singer not be deified, and that every be told very openly, including topics such as drugs, love affairs, and the fight for custody of the artist’s son after her death. The requests were honored. In the film, Cássia is fully examined, but in a delicate way and always with much respect. The result is accurate and gives a new chapter to the artist’s memory and the musical history of Brazil.

“Você pode até achar que me conhece, mas se espantará ao me ouvir cantar”, diz a voz de Malu Mader nos primeiros minutos de Cássia, cinebiografia de Paulo Henrique Fontenelle. A frase, escrita no livro de anotações recuperado da artista, explica o que o diretor quis capturar nas quase duas horas do documentário que lança luz sobre a revolucionária Cássia Eller, morta em 2001, aos 39 anos. O filme, que estreia em 29 de janeiro e tem participações de artistas como Nando Reis e a própria Malu Mader, nasceu quando Fontenelle percebeu a ausência de material biográfico sobre a cantora carioca. “Eu estava em casa ouvindo Relicário e fiquei com vontade de conhecer mais sobre sua vida”, explica. Cadernos, vídeos pessoais e gravações de programas de televisão foram consultados pelo diretor nos quatro anos de produção do longa. A primeira pessoa que contatou foi Maria Eugênia, ex-companheira de Cássia, que fez apenas duas exigências: que a cantora não fosse endeusada e que tudo fosse dito muito abertamente, inclusive temas como drogas, casos amorosos e a briga pela guarda do filho da artista após sua morte. Os pedidos foram atendidos. No filme, Cássia é escancarada, mas de forma delicada e sempre com muito respeito. O resultado é preciso e faz com que as memórias da artista e da história musical do Brasil ganhem um novo e precioso capítulo.

Tiradentes é definitivamente uma cidade cinematográfica. Suas ruas com calçadas pé de moleque, as igrejas e os casarões coloniais já serviram de locação para filmes, séries e novelas. E, pela 18a vez, tornam-se cenário da Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes, o primeiro grande evento do audiovisual brasileiro a ser realizado em 2015, de 23 a 31 de janeiro. Como de praxe, a Mostra homenageia uma personalidade da telona nacional. E a escolhida da vez foi a paraense Dira Paes. Em sua abertura será exibido o inédito Órfãos do Eldorado, adaptação do livro de Milton Hatoum em que ela atua sob direção de Guilherme Coelho. A programação conta ainda com uma minirretrospectiva com pelo menos cinco filmes da carreira da atriz. Além disso, a cidade vai ganhar três cinemas, instalados em pontos turísticos, que vão exibir gratuitamente mais de cem curtas, médias e longas-metragens nacionais. Oficinas, seminários, mesas-redondas e atividades voltadas para o público mirim completam os nove dias de programação.

Tiradentes is a definitively cinematographic city. It streets with cobblestone walkways, churches, and colonial manors have already served as a location for movies, series, and telenovelas. And, for the 18th time, they will be the setting of the Tiradentes Film Exhibition, the first big audiovisual event for Brazil in 2015, to be held from January 23rd to the 31st. As usual, the Exhibition pays tribute to a personality from the national big screen. And this time the one chosed was Dira Paes, from Pará. At its opening, the original Órfãos do Eldorado will be shown, an adaptation of the book by Milton Hatoum, in which she acts under the direction of Guilherme Coelho. The programming also includes a mini-retrospective with at least five films from the actress’ career. In addition, the city will receive three movie theaters, installed at its touristic points, which will show more than 100 short, medium, and feature-length Brazilian films, free of charge. Workshops, seminars, round tables, and activities aimed at junior audiences finish out the nine days of programming.

O disco é quase todo instrumental e homenageia o tecladista Rick Wright. The Endless River is the 15th and final album from British group Pink Floyd. For its production, David Gilmour and Nick Mason revisited the recordings of their previous work, 1993’s the Division Bell, and utilized passages that were removed at the time of its release. The disc is almost entirely instrumental and it is dedicated to keyboardist Rick Wright.

Five couples of the most varied styles will star in the ten episodes of Felizes Para Sempre, a miniseries which debuts on January 26 on Globo, with general direction by Fernando Meirelles. “A wife unsatisfied with her husband’s performance, a man who cheats, a jealous guy, a woman who doesn’t like sex, and even a couple who understand one another well. Something for all tastes,” says the director of the new production. Adriana Esteves, Enrique Diaz, Maria Fernanda Cândido, and Paolla Oliveira are in the cast of the drama written by Euclydes Marinho, a remake of Quem Ama Não Mata, by the same author, aired in 1982. But don’t worry about spoilers: the murderer and the victim are secrets well kept by the team. Initially, the miniseries was to be filmed in Niterói, but Meirelles convinced the broadcaster to move the location to the federal capital. “I am an architect by education, and Brasília fascinates me. The possibility of showing this city, so little used in television drama, motivated me even more.” He shared the direction of the episodes with Rodrigo Meirelles, Paulo Morelli, and Luciano Maura, and may also film scenes in a manor in São Paulo, which belonged to ex-banker Edemar Cid Ferreira. “This setting is decorated with Volpis, Portinaris, Krajcbergs, all original. Anyone who sees it will like it,” he guaranteed.

Em seu primeiro romance, Bilac Vê Estrelas, lançado em 2000, Ruy Castro confirmou sua incrível habilidade de retratar o Rio e seus personagens. Agora, acompanha a história por ele contada ganhar outras dimensões, na forma de uma comédia musical homônima, com estreia marcada para o dia 9 de janeiro. O cenário da peça é a capital fluminense do início do século 20, onde figuras marcantes como o poeta Olavo Bilac e o jornalista José do Patrocínio se envolvem em uma trama ficcional sobre o roubo do projeto de um dirigível. “É uma forma de apresentar essas personalidades de um jeito mais humano”, explica o diretor João Fonseca. Para embalar o espetáculo – que tem texto de Heloisa Seixas e Julia Romeu – Nei Lopes compôs 17 canções especialmente para o projeto. “As músicas carregam pitadas de humor na poesia, o que aproxima o público”, completa João, que considera o próprio Rio um importante personagem da história. Segundo ele, há uma relação entre o período retratado ali e os dias de hoje. “Na belle époque, o Rio também passava por muitas obras e transformações”, comenta. “Sou apaixonado pela cidade e por seu caráter sedutor. É uma responsabilidade retratá-la no musical.” In his first novel, Bilac Vê Estrelas, released in 2000, Ruy Castro confirmed his incredible ability to portray Rio and its characters. Now you can see the story he told take on other dimensions, in the form of a musical comedy of the same name, with its debut scheduled for January 9. The setting of the play is the capital city of Rio de Janeiro at the start of the 20th century, where remarkable figures such as poet Olavo Bilac and journalist José do Patrocínio were involved in a fictional plot about the theft of the design of a dirigible. “It is a way to present these personalities in a more human way,” explains director João Fonseca. To package the show – which has a script by Heloisa Seixas and Julia Romeu – Nei Lopes composed 17 original songs, especially for the project. “The songs carry bits of humor in the poetry, which draws the audience in,” concluded João, who considers Rio itself to be an important character in the story. According to him, there is a relationship between the era portrayed there and the modern day. “In the belle époque, Rio also underwent a lot of construction and transformations,” he comments. “I am in love with the city and its seductive nature. It is a responsibility to portray it in the musical.”

Situado no Lago Sul, o bairro mais luxuoso de Brasília, o Taypá atrai multidões desde sua abertura, em 2010. Primeiro, por conta dos ceviches e das inusitadas combinações de molhos que este tradicional prato peruano ali recebe. Segundo, graças aos saborosos coquetéis, vários a base de pisco, que animam dos happy hours aos fins de noite. Terceiro, mas não menos importante, pela experiência enriquecedora que um restaurante fiel às suas raízes pode proporcionar: ele permite que o cliente descubra que a culinária de um país não está restrita a seus clássicos. Apresentar os sabores do Peru mundo afora, aliás, é missão de Marco Espinoza há algum tempo. Chef à frente do Taypá, ele nasceu em Lima e estudou no Instituto Argentino de Gastronomia em Buenos Aires, onde atuou por quase dez anos. Em 2009, esteve em Brasília para um festival de comida peruana, a convite dos donos do restaurante Bier Fass. Foi quando se encantou com o sucesso que os sabores andinos faziam por aqui. Um ano mais tarde, decidiu fundar o Taypá – que na sua língua quer dizer fartura –, junto com quatro sócios brasileiros. "Minha ideia era abrir um restaurante que pudesse ser perene. Por isso, mudo partes do cardápio a cada seis meses e faço festivais ao lado de outros chefs. Tudo para não cansar o público", explica. Enquanto a decoração da casa tem elementos trazidos de sua terra natal, como esculturas e molduras de espelhos, sua cozinha está repleta de conterrâneos. Situated in Lago Sul, the most luxurious neighborhood of Brasília, Taypá has been attracting big crowds since its opening in 2010. First, on account of the ceviches and unusual combinations of sauces that this traditional Peruvian dish receive there. Second, thanks to the flavorful cocktails, many of them pisco-based, which liven things up from happy hour to the end of the night. Third, but no less important, for the enriching experience that a restaurant faithful to its roots can provide: it allows the customer to discover that a country's cuisine is not limited to its classic dishes. Presenting the flavors of Peru the world over, after all, has been Marco Espinoza's mission for some time. The chef behind Taypá, he was born in Lima and studies and Instituto Argentino de Gastonomia in Buenos Aires, where he worked for nearly ten years. In 2009, he was in Brasília for a Peruvian food festival, at the invitation of the owners of the restaurant Bier Fass. That was when he became fascinated by the success that the Andean flavors enjoyed here. A year later, he decided to found Taypá – which in his language means abundance – together with four Brazilian partners. "My idea was to open a restaurant which could be perennial. That is why I change parts of the menu every six months and I do festivals alongside other chefs. I do everything to keep the public from getting tired of it," he explains. Espinoza makes a point of having them in leadership positions, to maintain the authentic reproduction of the cuisine of Peru, so the bartender, the ceviche maker, and those who prepare the sauces and the deserts are all from there. On the menu, the so-called New Andean cuisine – a mixture of classic dishes with local and contemporary ingredients – is the highlight. For appetizers, sandwiches and croquettes share importance with the various ceviche options. In the house specialties, recipes such as arroz de pato, the pescado al azafán, and the lomo andino shed light on lesser-known flavors. If Taypá is not enough, Espinoza has through other restaurants in Rio de Janeiro and is working on opening three more. Trips to his home country occupy space on his schedule: "It's necessary to stay in contact with the culture, to know what is being done there, so I can incorporate it into my restaurants if I want." Entre budas esculpidos em pedra, cerâmicas coloridas e tapetes requintados, você poderia pensar que chegou a uma das ilhas do Sul do Pacífico. Mas é no litoral cearense, na escondida Praia de Guajiru, que o clima zen domina o ambiente e os bangalôs do Zorah Beach Hotel. Um oásis no meio das dunas fossilizadas, que insere sofisticados toques do Oriente na brasilidade da região. Inaugurado em 2013, no município de Trairi, a 2h30 de Fortaleza, a propriedade é exemplo de sossego e luxo. Cada um de seus cinco bangalôs – uma vila e 16 suítes completam as opções de acomodações – tem 90 metros quadrados, cama super king size com dossel e detalhes como pinturas nas paredes. A tranquilidade do local convida a aproveitar o fim de tarde em seu deck privativo com um bom livro, enquanto se espera a lua aparecer pertinho do mar. O céu estrelado ganha mais destaque ali, longe das luzes da cidade, onde se ouve apenas os murmúrios das ondas e do vento. Já durante o dia a areia branca e as piscinas naturais, formadas durante a maré baixa, são

atrações praticamente exclusivas. Para serem aproveitadas sem pressa. Depois, vale completar a experiência provando os sais de banho na hidromassagem do banheiro do bangalô, que conta ainda com amenities L'Occitane, duas pias de pedra vulcânica e um jardim. Toda a decoração do hotel, aliás, foi feita um pouco às avessas. Seu proprietário, o indiano Sumeet Dhillon, primeiro comprou o mobiliário de madeira em Bali e peças na Índia e no Oriente Médio. Só depois é que finalizou o projeto arquitetônico, pensado de forma a encaixar cada um dos objetos. O resultado é um ambiente com referências asiáticas, sem se tornar caricatural. Essa influência vai além e abraça também a gastronomia. Com o dedo de vários chefs, alguns deles indianos, o cardápio do restaurante mistura pratos orientais com ingredientes nordestinos. Difícil resistir aos naans, os divinos pães da Índia. Mais complicado ainda é escolher entre as opções de curry ou os clássicos regionais, como o risoto de abóbora com carne seca.

Among Buddhas sculpted in stone, colored ceramics and refined carpets, you might think you've arrived on an island in the South Pacific. But this is the coast of Ceará, on the hidden Guajiru Beach, where the Zen climate dominates the atmosphere and the bungalows of the Zorah Beach Hotel. An oasis in the middle of the fossilized dunes, which injects sophisticated touches of the Orient into the Brazilian-ness of the region. Inaugurated in 2013, in the municipality of Trairi, two and a half hours from Fortaleza, the property is the epitome of restfulness and luxury. Each of its five bungalows – a villa and 16 suites round out its accommodation options – has 90 square meters, a super king-size canopy bed, and details such as paintings on the walls. The tranquility of the location invites you to enjoy the afternoon on your private deck with a good book, while you wait for the moon to come close to the sea. The starry sky stands out more there, far from the city lights, where only the murmur of the waves and the wind can be heard. Then, during the day, the white sand and natural pools formed at low tide are practically exclusive attractions to be enjoyed without any hurry. Afterward, it's worth completing the experience by trying out the bath salts in the hydromassage tub in the bungalow's bathroom, which also features L´Occitane amenities, two sinks of volcanic rock, and a garden. The decor throughout the hotel, in fact, was done a little backwards. It owner, Sumeet Dhillon, from India, first bought the wooden furniture in Bali and other piece in India and the Middle East. Only afterward did he finalize the architectural project, planning it to fit each of the objects. The result is an environment with Asian references, without becoming a caricature. This influence goes beyond and encompasses the cuisine as well. With the help of various chefs, some of them Indian, the menu of the restaurant mixes oriental dishes with ingredients of Northeastern Brazilian cuisine. It is difficult to resist the naan, the divine bread from India. It's more complicated still to choose from among the curry options or the regional classics, such as the squash risotto with dried beef.

Was there any preparation before the filming? Yes, we receive the agendas at least a week in advance, which gives us time for a preparation. Em princípio, meu trabalho principal na TV ainda é atuando, mas, dependendo do projeto, posso até topar algo semelhante outra vez.

Given that it's something so different from what you usually do, what led you to agree to participate on the program? I got in on this because I though it could be a stimulating exercise. And it really has been. Initially, my main work in TV is still acting, but depending on the project, I might even go for something similar again.

Como você explica o sucesso da versão masculina do Saia Justa? Por estarmos em um canal voltado principalmente para o público feminino, acho que despertamos curiosidade sobre o ponto de vista de cada um de nós, homens, a respeito dos mais diversos temas. Basicamente, o que muda é o timbre das conversas: as mulheres tendem para o agudo e nós, para o grave. E, quanto ao ritmo, acho que somos naturalmente mais lentos. How do you explain the success of Saia Justa in its male version? Since we are a channel aimed primarily at female audiences, I think that we sparked their curiosity about the points of view of each of us, men, about a wide range of topics. Basically, what changes is the intonation of the conversations: the women tend to go sharp, while we tend to go flat. And with regard to the pace, I think we are naturally slower.

ave all the geniuses of art already been discovered? Could there be a Picasso, Shakespeare or Hemingway lost out there, still unknown to the public? I kept thinking on these questions as I watched Finding Vivian Maier, a documentary about American photographer Vivian Maier. She died in 2009, at 83, very poor and living off the charity of others. Nobody knew her past. Neighbors found the old eccentric funny, as she spent her days picking up trash in the street, with a camera hung around her neck. Now, Vivian Maier is a legend of photography. Her work is compared to great names such as Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt, and Weegee. Her images – always taken in the street and loaded with drama and black humor – are worth a lot of money on the art market. Relatives who had never met her fought in court over the rights to her work. And to think that Vivian Maier’s discovery was stroke of luck. In 2007, a youth of 26 names John Maloof bought a box of negatives at an antiques auction. It contained nearly 30,000 negatives of Maier’s photos. The young man magnified some of them and was shocked by the beauty and originality of the material. He posted some images on the internet, and the reaction was impressive: that was the work of an exceptional professional. Then began a detective story, with Maloof searching for clues about Vivian Maier’s past. After many coming and goings and false leads, he discovered that she had made a living for decades and a nanny. And it was during outings with the children that she took the opportunity to take her snapshots of life. A fascinating book about her has been released in Brazil: Vivian Maier: Uma Fotógrafa de Rua, published by Editora Autêntica. The story shows that there could be a forgotten Cartier-Bresson in some corner, just waiting to be discovered.

eruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, a giant of the literary world, was traveling in the plane bound for an archipelago of the Atlantic when another passenger addressed him with reverence: “You don’t know how important you and your books were in my life.” Without giving time for the author of Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter to thank him, the devoted reader added: “Onde Hundred Years of Solitude was very important.” Generous like many of his characters, the saved the fan of Gabriel García Márquez, the Colombian genius who left us his masterpiece in One Hundred Years..., from realizing he was speaking to the wrong man. This kind of confusion is not uncommon. At a Brazilian literary festival, journalist and writer Zuenir Ventura was hearing high praise from fans, until one of them called out to a friend: “Come see Saramago!” In another episode, they took him for artist and thinker Millôr Fernandes. “This year he can’t come,” said Zuenir, surely laughing inside – Millôr had died two years before. Sometimes, it goes poorly. On the airbridge, a welldressed lady approached chronicler and composer Antônio Maria. She thought she had found the writer she venerated, Carlos Heitor Cony. With the atmosphere heating up, the co-author of the sambacanção Ninguém Me Ama didn’t break the spell, and after disembarking, he embarked on a love affair with the reader. “And then?”, asked Cony, when his friend confided the story to him. “And then when that moment arrived, “you” malfunctioned,” said Maria. I witnessed a similar episode, two decades ago, in a distant country. A reporter was drinking in the bar of the hotel with a sports commentator. “I love your catchphrases,” she whispered, before reciting them one by one. Only it was another announcer, and he kept it to himself. Before taking the last sip of Kir Royal and leaving, I saw the two smiling, enchanted.

he use of technology in cooking has given the chef an extraordinary increase in the precision of the cooking points, in the preservation of the flavor, and in new ways to use the ingredients. The Roner, for example, a device used to cook at a low temperature, is on the rise. Vacuum-sealed foods are cooked at settings programmed for each type of food. With their flavors confined within a plastic bag, there is no evaporation or water dispersion. A chicken breast, the driest part of the bird, will keep its tenderness and moisture, a result difficult to obtain using conventional methods. Since man first mastered fire, inventions that facilitate the act of cooking have come to tell the history of human evolution. It imagined that the first barbecue was a great blaze kindled over game in the open air, and a lot of smoke clouded the eyes of humanity before it came to ancho steaks or the expertise of the Brazilian rodízio. However, this rudimentary form of burning wood to roast meat is still the same, and the ancestral taste for roasted meat has not slipped away from us. It is this primitive technique that make it possible for us to enjoy this ancient taste so familiar to us. It is not only food that feeds us. We eat history and meaning. Acarajé away from the Bahian woman’s tray, without the striking aroma of the dendê, would be no more than a ball of beans, in the same way that a moqueca outside the clay pot would be a simple cooked fish. The exaggerated use of technology can lead to redundancy of the flavor, and there are already clear signs of dissatisfaction with the enormous distance between our much-loved repertoire of food and what is offered in contemporary restaurants. Cooking has to have the clarity in the choice of certain resources for this preparation or that one. It seems reasonable to me that traditions and modernity could share burners on the wood-fired stove and the pushing of buttons, all for the good of delicious food that moves us.

Entretanto, essa forma rudimentar de queimar madeira para assar a carne ainda é a mesma, e o gosto ancestral do tostado não nos escapuliu. É essa técnica primitiva que nos possibilita desfrutar desse gosto antigo e tão familiar. Não é só a comida que nos alimenta. Comemos histórias e significados. O acarajé fora do tabuleiro da baiana, sem o aroma marcante do dendê, seria apenas um bolinho de feijão, assim como uma moqueca fora da panela de barro seria um frugal peixe cozido. O uso exagerado da tecnologia pode levar à redundância do gosto, e já há claros sinais de insatisfação com a descomunal distância entre o nosso repertório afetivo de comida e o que é oferecido nos restaurantes contemporâneos. Há que se ter na gastronomia a clareza na escolha dos recursos certos para este ou aquele preparo. Parece-me razoável que tradição e modernidade possam compartilhar bocas do fogão a lenha e o apertar de botões, tudo pelo bem de uma comida gostosa e que emocione.

akunaima estava furioso. Descobrira que seu irmão Acuri havia encontrado uma grandiosa árvore frutífera, cujo topo alcançava as nuvens, e dela andava se alimentando às escondidas. Indignado com tamanho egoísmo e a fim de dar-lhe uma lição, não hesitou em derrubá-la. Mas eis que a imponente árvore também mostrou sua força. Seus enormes troncos e ramos caídos tornaram toda uma área de savana em densa floresta. As águas que nela se acumulavam deram forma a abundantes rios e cachoeiras. Uma paisagem inóspita, que circundou e protegeu sua base, petrificada pelos poderes do índio. Essa formação rochosa Makunaima adotou como casa, prometendo ser seu eterno guardião. E mais tarde viu seus descendentes a batizarem de tepui Roraima, o gran verde-azulado – ou, para nós, o Monte Roraima. A lenda, contada até hoje pelo povo pemon, nativo da região, dá o primeiro indício de que

o cartão-postal do Estado de Roraima é um lugar místico, especial. Crendices à parte, não há quem não venere uma montanha de 2.723 metros de altura espichada bem diante dos olhos. Seu topo aplainado – tepui refere-se à formação ao estilo de mesa – tem 55 quilômetros quadrados de área, abraçando três países: Brasil (5% de seu território), Guiana (10%) e Venezuela (85%). Pisar ali é transportar-se para um universo particular. Ou melhor, ancestral. O Monte é uma das composições mais antigas da Terra, de 2 bilhões de anos atrás, época em que a América do Sul e a África compunham um só continente. Alcançar seu cume é factível graças ao botânico inglês Everard im Thurn, que lá chegou pela primeira vez (oficialmente) em 1884. Seus relatos da expedição possibilitaram, mais tarde, a demarcação da trilha e até inspiraram sir Arthur Conan Doyle a escrever O Mundo Perdido, em 1912. O turismo mesmo começou a se firmar por ali na década de 80 e atualmente a expedição é considerada um dos mais belos e emocionantes trekkings do País.

akunaima was furious. He had discovered that his brother Acuri had found a magnificent fruit tree whose top reached the clouds, and had been secretly feeding himself from it. Indignant at such egotism and determined to teach him a lesson, he didn’t hesitate to knock it down. But lo and behold, the imposing tree also showed its power. Its enormous fallen trunk and branches turned a whole area of savannah into dense forest. The water which had accumulated in it gave shape to abundant rivers and waterfalls. An inhospitable landscape surrounded and protected its base, petrified by the powers of the Indian. Makunaima adopted this rock formation as a home, promising to be its eternal guardian. And later he saw his descendants call it Roraima tepui, the “great bluish-green” – or to us, Mount Roraima. The legend, still told today by the pemon people, native to the region, give the first indication that the postcard of the State of Roraima is a mystical, special place. Superstitions aside, no one can fail to respect a 2723-meter-high mountain stretched out before their eyes. It flat top – tepui refers to the mesa-style formation – is 55 square kilometers in area, including parts of three countries: Brazil (5% of its territory), Guyana (10%), and Venezuela (85%). To set foot there is to be transported to a peculiar universe. Or better, an ancestral one. The mountain has one of the oldest make-ups on Earth, from 2 billion years ago, an era when South America and Africa formed a single continent. It is feasible to reach its top thanks to English botanist Everard im Thurn, who arrived there for the first time (officially) in 1884. His accounts of the expedition later made it possible to demarcate the trail, and even inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write The Lost World in 1912. Tourist itself began to be established there in the 80s and currently the expedition is considered one of the most beautiful and thrilling treks in the country. Truth be told, the Brazilian part of the mountain can be explored once on top, but the Venezuelan portion is the main focus of the adventure. First, you leave from Boa Vista and go to Santa Helena de Uairén, already in the neighboring country. From there, a 4x4 vehicle takes you to the community of Paraitepui, where the taurepang live, indigenous people of the same ethnicity as the pemon. This is the point of departure for the trek, which involves

Eis o ponto de partida para o trekking, que compreende três dias de andanças até o cume da montanha, dois ou três para explorá-lo e outros dois para a descida de retorno. Em média, caminha-se cinco horas diariamente, boa parte delas pela gran savana, onde o sol pode ser implacável. A paisagem que acompanha os andarilhos, porém, os faz esquecerem os sinais de cansaço. O trajeto até o Rio Tek, local do primeiro pernoite, é feito admirando o Monte Roraima e seu “tepui irmão”, o Matawi-Kukenán. O acesso ao segundo é complicado e pouco explorado turisticamente. Muitos taurepangs nem cogitam escalá-lo, consideram-no um local sagrado e perigoso – em seu dialeto, a etimologia de seu nome quer dizer um bom lugar para morrer. A dupla majestosa faz parte dos sete imensos tepuis da antiga cadeia que ocupa a região e que assistiu, ao longo dos anos, à Terra esculpir praias e planaltos. Contemplar este cenário é ter a certeza da força da natureza. Descampados e pequenos morros têm de ser vencidos na sequência, até o acampamento base, para uma noite de sono a poucos metros do pé do Roraima. No dia seguinte, os limites físicos e psicológicos dos visitantes são postos em xeque para vencer os 5km montanha acima. As pedras às vezes ajudam, compondo degraus medianos, mas também desafiam ao se exibirem como paredes de escalada, exigindo o auxílio das mãos. Trecho duro, para ser cumprido a seu tempo. Vale descansar, refrescar-se nas cachoeiras e nos mirantes, acompanhando o vaivém das nuvens.

MISCIGENAÇÃO AFLORADA

A MELTING POT “Damurida, nossa alma traduzida em comida”, canta Neuber Uchôa (foto), nativo de Roraima. O caldo de origem indígena – leva água, tucupi, jambu e peixe – é por ele oferecido àqueles que visitam a sua Casa do Neuber, em Boa Vista, nas noites de quinta-feira. Um dos artistas pioneiros do movimento roraimeira, dedica o espaço à celebração da música e da cultura do Estado, que exalta influências dos índios da região, dos povos do Caribe e do Nordeste que para ali migraram. “Nossa identidade está na mistura de culturas. Nós aprendemos a agregar”, explica o compositor.

three days of hiking up to the top of the mountain, two or three to explore it, and another two for the return descent. On average, you walk five hours each day, a good portion of which takes you through the grand savannah, where the sun can be relentless. The landscape that accompanies you wanderings, however, will make you forget the signs of tiredness. The stretch which reaches the Tek River, the location of the first night’s stay, covered while admiring Mount Roraima and it “brother tepui”, Matawi-Kukenán. Access to this second one is complicated and little explored touristically. Many taurepangs wouldn’t even think of climbing it; they consider it a sacred and dangerous place – in their dialect, the etymology of its name means a good place to die. The majestic pair is among the seven immense tepuis of the ancient chain which occupies the region and which were present over the years as the Earth sculpted beaches and plateaus. To contemplate this scenario is to be certain of the power of nature.

“Damurida, our soul expressed in food,” sings Neuber Uchôa (photo), native of Roraima. He offers the broth of indigenous origin – containing water, tucupi, jambu, and fish – to those who visit his Casa do Neuber, in Boa Vista, on Thursday evenings. One of the pioneering artists in the Roraimeira movement, he dedicates the space to the celebration of the music and culture of the state, which exalts influences from the indigenous people of the region, the people of the Caribbean and of the Northeast who have migrated there. “Our identity is in the mixture of cultures. We have learned to aggregate,” the composer explains.

Open fields and small hills have to be conquered next, until you reach the base camp, for a night of sleep only a few meters from the foot of Roraima. The next day, visitors’ physical and psychological limits are put to the test to conquer the 5-km trail up the mountain. The rocks sometimes help by forming ordinary-sized steps, but they also present challenges in the form of climbing walls, requiring the help of your hands. A tough stretch, it can be covered at your own pace. It is worth stopping to rest and get refreshed at the waterfalls and the lookouts, watching the comings and goings of the clouds.

Afinal, visitar sua casa é uma vitória, e uma alegria que enche os corações até dos mais céticos. A partir de então, há um novo velho mundo a ser explorado. Por conta de seu solo e seu clima particulares, o tepui exibe uma série de espécies endêmicas. As carnívoras Drosera roraimae e Utricularia humboldtii são algumas das plantas que conferem cor à paisagem dominada pelas rochas escuras e que se assemelham a cogumelos, a árvores e até a soldadinhos. Os animais são poucos: alguns insetos, aranhas, borboletas e o Oreophynella quelchii, sapinho negro com a barriga amarela, pouco maior que uma unha.

Úmida por natureza – há chuvas constantes durante oito meses do ano –, a montanha guarda lagos, piscinas naturais, chamadas de “jacuzzis”, além de cavernas, vales repletos de cristais e muitos, muitos mirantes. De um deles, o La Ventana, veem-se a outra ponta do Roraima e o Kukenán quase completo, com suas quedas d’água expostas ao longo de paredões de 600 metros de altura. Deparar-se com tal panorâmica exige sorte – ou a bênção de Makunaima –, pois o mais comum é encontrar o local completamente encoberto. Cena que contribui para a atmosfera mágica e misteriosa da montanha, também apelidada de “fábrica de nuvens”. O Maverick, curiosa pedra que se assemelha ao carro fabricado pela Ford, é o ponto mais alto do Monte, com quase 2.800 metros, e, por isso, outro mirante espetacular. E basta seguir pelas bordas para encontrar mais pontos privilegiados, nos quais a vista surpreende tanto quanto o silêncio absoluto. Durante as andanças é possível conhecer os “hotéis” da montanha, áreas que, por conta de suas coberturas naturais e da proximidade com a água, são as mais indicadas para servirem de acampamento.

Right near the top is Makunaima in stone form – there is a formation which shows the features of the local guardian – that receives the brave visitors. And he seems to repay them with extra doses of energy. After all, visiting his home is a victory, and a joy that fills the hearts of even the most skeptical. From there on out, there is a new old world to be explored. Because of its peculiar soil and climate, the tepui exhibits a series of endemic species. The carnivorous Drosera roraimae and Utricularia humboldtii are some of the plants the lend color to the landscape dominated by the dark rocks that look like mushrooms, trees, or even little soldiers. Animals are few. There are some insects, spiders, and the Oreophynella quelchii, a little black frog with a yellow belly, not much bigger than a fingernail. Humid by nature – there are constant rains for eight months out of the years – the mountain holds lakes, natural pools called jacuzzis, as well as caverns, valleys full of crystals, and many, many lookouts. From one of them, La Ventana, you can see the other end of Roraima and almost all of Kukenán, with its waterfalls exposed along 600-meter-high walls. Coming across such a panorama requires luck – or Makunaima’s blessing – since it’s more common to find the place completely clouded over. A scene which contributes to the magical and mysterious atmosphere of the mountain, it is also nicknamed the “cloud factory”. The Maverick, a curious rock which looks like the car made by Ford, is the highest point of the mountain, at almost 2800 meters, and is therefore a spectacular lookout point. And you only have to follow the edges to come across the most privileged points, where the view is as surprising as the absolute silence. During your wanderings, it is possible to find the “hotels” of the mountain, areas which, due to their natural shelters and proximity to water, are most recommended to serve as camps.

Two days on the top are definitely not enough to tame the immensity of Roraima, nor to decide which is more magnificent: the show of light and color of the sunset, of that of the sunrise. It takes time to process its peculiarities and to understand the power of its beauty. But feeling the tranquility that it transmits is something almost automatic. Anyone who sets foot there experiences the thrill of contact with a giant that refuses to simply follow its natural course. Hope Makunaima preserves it that way.

a Fazenda Palmeira, em Santa Mariana, a imensidão verde dos pés de café se encontra com o azul anil do céu em uma tarde quente de primavera. É uma dessas visões que, pela beleza, se fixam na memória sem grande esforço. Já o tom vermelho vivo da terra, típico do Norte do Paraná, funciona como um lembrete da fertilidade do solo e remete ao tempo em que o Estado foi um dos maiores produtores de café do País. A 90km de Londrina – na época, apelidada de “a capital mundial do café” –, a propriedade está inserida na região conhecida como Norte Pioneiro, que deu início ao cultivo do grão tardiamente, após a crise de 1929. A cafeicultura veio na bagagem dos imigrantes paulistas e mineiros que se estabeleceram por ali. t Fazenda Palmeira, in Santa Mariana, the green immensity of the coffee bushes meets the indigo blue of the sky on a hot spring afternoon. It is one of those visions that, for its beauty, lodges itself in the memory with no great effort. The bright red hue of the earth, typical of the North of Paraná, serves as a reminder of the fertility of the soil and recalls an era in which the state was one of the largest coffee producers in the country. 90 km from Londrina – nicknamed the “world coffee capital” at the time – the property is situated in the region known as the Pioneer North, which began cultivation of the beans late, after the crisis of 1929. Coffee growing arrived amongst the luggage of the immigrants from São Paulo and Minas Gerais who established themselves in the area. In the 60s, the area was already responsible for nearly 50% of all of national production, until a frost devastated the whole crop in 1975.

Naqueles tempos, a Fazenda Palmeira chegou a ter uma colônia com trinta famílias. Hoje, tocada por Nobert Gamerschlag, produz menos, mas grãos de alto padrão. Uma alternativa também adotada por propriedades vizinhas, que buscaram mudar o paradigma: a região, que ficou famosa pela quantidade, agora quer ser reconhecida pela qualidade. E caminha a passos firmes nessa direção. O café especial do Norte Pioneiro, com 7500 cafeicultores espalhados em 45 municípios, recebeu recentemente a certificação de Indicação Geográfica de Procedência (IGP), do Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Intelectual (INPI). No momento em que se constrói uma nova história local, o Sebrae-PR, em parceria com cafeicultores e empreendedores da região, criou a Rota do Café (rotadocafe.tur.br), um roteiro turístico que recupera a trajetória, a cultura e o modo de vida das antigas – e também das modernas – fazendas. A Rota engloba 30 atrações espalhadas por nove cidades próximas a Londrina, localizadas em um raio de 200 quilômetros. Por seu caráter intimista e acolhedor, é preciso contatar uma agência que organiza tours de uma tarde ou até sete dias. “Não é o tipo de turismo autoguiado. Ela foi pensada para oferecer uma experiência de vida aos visitantes, que conhecem as pessoas

envolvidas com o café, sua história, além de várias fases da cadeia produtiva”, explica Luciana Masson, uma das idealizadoras do projeto. Para começar a se aprofundar no contexto local, há o Museu Histórico de Londrina, instalado no prédio da antiga estação ferroviária. Nos fundos, uma pequena roça de café é mantida para explicar a importância do “ouro verde”, como ele era conhecido, que tanta fortuna e desenvolvimento trouxe para a cidade. O local guarda objetos pessoais dos tropeiros e reproduz um pouco do cotidiano das décadas de 40 e 50. Já no simpático café do Museu toda semana são realizadas oficinas de degustação de grãos especiais.

In those times, Fazenda Palmeira became home to a colony of thirty families. Today, tended by Nobert Gamerschlag, it produces less, but the beans it produces are of a high standard. An alternative also adopted by neighboring properties, which seek to overturn the paradigm: the region which became famous for its quantity now want to be recognized for it quality. And it is taking firm strides in that direction. The special coffee of the Pioneer North, with 7500 coffee growers spread across 45 municipalities, recently received the Geographic Indication of Origin (IGP) from the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). At a time when a new local history is being built, SEBRAE-PR, in partnership with coffee growers and entrepreneurs of the region, has created the Rota do Café (rotadocafe.tur.br), a touristic circuit which reclaims the history, the culture, and the lifestyle of the old farms, as well as the modern ones. The circuit encompasses 30 attractions spread across nine cities near Londrina, located within a 200-kilometer radius. Due to its intimate and welcoming character, it is necessary to contact an agency which organizes tours of one afternoon or up to seven days. “It is not the self-guided type of tourism. It was conceived to offer visitors a life experience, for them to get to know the people involved with the coffee, its history, as well as various phases of the production chain,” explains Luciana Masson, one of the creators of the project. To being delving into the local context, there is the History Museum of Londrina, installed in the building of the former train station. In the back, a small coffee farm is kept to explain the importance of “green gold”, as it was known, which brought both fortune and development to the city. The site houses personal objects of the muleteers and reproduces a little of the daily life of the 40s and 50s. Then, in the Museum’s friendly café, special workshops are held every week for tasting of special beans.

Pouco mais de 20 quilômetros adiante, já em Rolândia, a Pousada Rural Marabu não tem produção de café, mas é um dos parceiros da Rota. Em frente a ela, Adrian Saegesser mantém a propriedade construída por seu avô suíço, que migrou para o País na década de 30. Cercada de mata nativa, há dois chalés para hospedagem. São famosos na região os almoços vegetarianos e as delícias produzidas ali, como a geleia de uvaia e a compota de maçã, cebola e manjerona. “Meu avô chegou ao Brasil em 1937. Antes disso, desde 1925, ele já era vegano”, conta Adrian para explicar a opção por uma dieta sem carne. A refeição com salada de feijão-fradinho, batata com molho de café, lasanha de berinjela e charuto de folha de urtiga com farofa de cenoura, além dos pães e tortas caseiros, é muito saborosa. E, por vezes, surpreendente.

A little more than 20 km down the road, in Rolândia, the Pousada Rural Marabú has no coffee production, but it is one of the circuit’s partners. In charge of it, Adrian Saegesser keeps the property build by his Swiss grandfather who immigrated to the country in the early 20th century. Surrounded by native forest, there are two chalets for accommodation. The vegetarian lunches and delicacies produced there, such as the uvaia jelly and the compote of apply, onion, and marjoram, are famous throughout the region. “My grandfather arrived in Brazil in 1937. Before that, in 1925, he had already become vegan,” says Adrian, explaining the choice for a meatless diet. The meal with black-eyed pea salad, potato with coffee sauce, eggplant lasagna, and nettle leaf roll with carrot farofa, in addition

Na também centenária Fazenda Monte Bello, em Ribeirão Claro, os turistas são recebidos por Victor Suplicy Harbach, outro personagem cuja relação com a terra vem de longe: seu pai e seu avô foram, respectivamente, corretor e produtor de café. Na propriedade, as antigas instalações, onde o café é lavado, a tulha onde se seca a colheita e um pequeno vagão sobre trilhos para levar os grãos até o galpão de armazenamento seguem sendo usados. Nos últimos anos, porém, a produção diminuiu e os pés de café hoje dividem a terra com o cultivo de macadâmia e lichia. “A Fazenda nasceu para a cafeicultura. Nossa topografia, alta e acidentada, não comporta maquinário. Todo o trabalho é manual”, conta Harbach, para logo acrescentar: “Apesar de ter passado minha vida aqui, não sei nada sobre café. Mas estou aprendendo”, diz sorridente, do alto de seus 80 anos.

In recent years, however, the production has diminished and the coffee bushes now share the land with macadamia and lychee cultivation. “The farm was made for coffee growing. Our topography, high and rugged, is not conducive to machinery. So all the work is manual”, says Harbach, then adding: “Despite having spend a good part of my life here, I still don’t know anything about coffee. But I am learning,” the 80-yearold says, with a friendly smile.

Tive a oportunidade de conhecer Foz do Iguaçu no ano passado, quando recebi um convite da Record para gravar o especial O Manual Prático da Melhor Idade, exibido no final de 2014. Como ele foi gravado 90% na cidade, fiquei dez dias por lá trabalhando e aproveitei para conhecê-la melhor. As catataras me emocionaram muito. Aquele lugar é inexplicável! Todo o mundo já viu em fotos, mas observar as quedas d’água ao vivo é outra história. Só lá é possível sentir a força da natureza. No dia da minha visita, ainda presenciei a formação de um lindo arco-íris. Naquele momento, senti que Deus estava bem próximo de mim. Aproveitei também para fazer uma trilha no parque das cataratas. Nunca tinha visto tantas borboletas. O caminho termina no Rio Iguaçu e ali já é possível começar um percurso de canoagem. E, para coroar a viagem, observei diversas corujas no Parque das Aves. É o meu animal preferido e pude ver espécies que ainda não conhecia. Para quem gosta de aventura Foz é um lugar mágico.

I had the opportunity to visit Foz do Iguaçu last year, when I received an invitation from Record to film the special O Manual Prático da Melhor Idade, shown at the end of 2014. Since 90% of it was filmed in the city, I stayed there working for ten days, and I took the opportunity to get to know it better. The falls really thrilled me. That place can’t be put into words! Everyone has already seen pictures, but watching the waterfalls in person is another story. Only there can you feel the force of nature. On the day of my visit, I also witnessed the formation of a beautiful rainbow. At that moment, I felt that God was very near me. I also took the chance to hike a trail in the park of the falls. I had never seen so many butterflies. The path ends at the Iguaçu River, and there you can start a ride in a canoe. And, to top off the trip, I observed various owls in the Bird Park. It is my favorite animal, and I could see species I’d never seen before. For anyone who likes adventure, Foz is a magical place.

arrincha chamou de João cada zagueiro que entortou na Copa de 1962. Com um carro lento e sangue nos olhos, Senna apavorou, no GP de Mônaco de 1984, um francês que vivia na zona de conforto. Já Guga derrotou uma lenda espanhola em 1997, na primeira vez que venceu no saibro de Rolland Garros. À moda dos ídolos de seu país, Gabriel Medina, então com 16 anos, ignorou a fama de seus adversários em sua terceira prova na elite do surfe mundial, em 2011. O menino de Maresias, no litoral Norte de São Paulo, atropelou, com um inovador repertório de manobras aéreas, o maior surfista da história, Kelly Slater, para conquistar a primeira vitória da carreira na divisão máxima. Naquele dia, na areia, os donos da ASP World Tour, acostumados a campeões de língua saxã e gestos contidos, estranharam o barulho de um grupo. O fenômeno Gabriel, para surpresa deles, não fazia o tipo transgressor. Ao contrário, viajava com a animada família. Diante das câmeras do evento, a mãe, Simone Medina, deu o tom que predominaria no Circuito Mundial nos anos seguintes: "Isto é Brasil. É fé! É fé! É não desistir nunca!" O desabafo é a pista para conhecer o garoto que vem mudando as fronteiras do esporte. Na trilha do americano Slater, de 42 anos e 11 vezes campeão mundial, Gabriel é o avesso do estereótipo do surfista rebelde. A criação da mãe e do padrasto, Charles Saldanha, ajudou a fazer do

Gabriel passou longe da adolescência convencional. "Aos 12 anos eu treinava como hoje. Não tive a vida dos meus amigos, com diversão, balada... Ele era rígido e me fez ter desde cedo uma meta: ser campeão mundial", lembra. O pai sabia que o filho só teria chance se outros também acreditassem. At the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, with a slow car and blood in his eyes, Senna gave a fright to a Frenchman who had been living in his comfort zone. Guga defeated a Spanish legend in 1997, the first time he won on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Like the idols of his country, Gabriel Medina, 16 years old at the time, ignored the fame of his adversaries at his third round of the world surfing championship, in 2011. The boy from Maresias, on the North coast of São Paulo, used an innovative repertoire of aerial maneuvers to upset the greatest surfer in history, Kelly Slater, to win the first victory of his career in the highest division. That day, on the sand, the owners of the ASP World Tour, accustomed to English-speaking champions and restrained gestures, were surprised at the noise from a group. The phenomenal Gabriel, to their surprise, wasn't the outlaw type. On the contrary, he was traveling with his excited family. Before the cameras of the event, his mother, Simone Medina, set the tone that would predominate in the World Circuit in the following years: "This is Brazil. It's faith! It's faith! It's never giving up!" The outpouring is a starting point for understanding the boy who has been reshaping the frontiers of the sport. In the wake of the American Slater, 42 years old and 11-time world champion, Gabriel is the opposite of the stereotype of the rebel surfer. The upbringing by his mother and stepfather, Charles Saldanha helped to make the restless adolescent a young religious patriot with a determination that overwhelms the old legends. Charles, when he gave him a board at 9 years old, was decisive. He invested in his stepson – who he would end up declaring as his son – and with an almost military routine, with a balanced diet, training in and out of the water, and analysis of videos of the best athletes. Gabriel had a far-fromconventional adolescence. "At 12, I was training like I do today. I didn't have a life like my friends did, with fun and parties... He was very strict and he gave me a goal from and early age: to be world champion," he recalls. The father knew that his son would only have a chance if others also believed. After obtaining local sponsorships, he knocked on the door of Rip Curl and proposed that the boy would be the world champion. The brand took it up. The visionary was Felipe Silveira, now CEO of Rip Curl Brasil: "I've followed Gabriel's development since 2000, through

Evoluiu na personalidade vencedora, tem biotipo favorável, capacidade de improviso e frieza na decisão." Gabriel brinca: "Ele acredita mais em mim do que eu. E olha que isso é difícil". Já a mãe cuidou de sua formação moral. De Simone, o garoto herdou a paixão familiar e a inabalável fé. Eles frequentam a igreja evangélica Bola de Neve e as tatuagens do surfista celebram a religiosidade. Uma, vistosa, diz: Já não sou eu quem vive. É Cristo quem vive em mim. Surfo para dar alegria a ela, à minha família." A mãe completa: "Passamos dificuldades e ele sempre do meu lado, por mais criança que fosse. Temos orgulho de quem somos e do caminho que estamos trilhando". A família Medina, em peso, decidiu acompanhar Gabriel. Alguns australianos e americanos torceram o nariz. "Ele era novo e precisava se sentir seguro. Mas o diferente pode gerar críticas. Hoje, já vemos outros atletas com parentes”, conta Simone. Coruja, ela e o clã controlam o assédio feminino ao surfista.

Charles had merit, but he knew he was dealing with a pearl. "When he was small, he already had a different way of surfing. He evolved into a winning personality, he has a favorable body type, capacity to improvise, and a coolness in his decision-making." Gabriel jokes: "He believe in me more than I do. And that's pretty hard to do." His mother, in turn, took care of his moral upbringing. From Simone, the boy inherited the family passion and the unshakable faith. They attend the Bola de Neve evangelical church and the surfer's tattoos celebrate his religiosity. One eye-catching tattoo says: It is not me who lives. It is Christ who lives in me. Since he moved up to the world level, at a junior event in 2009 in France, Gabriel has mentioned Simone in his victory speeches - and he gets emotional. "My mother is everything to me. I surf to give joy to her, to my family." His mother continues: "We went through difficulties and he was always at my side, even when he was just a child. We are proud of who we are and the path we are following." The Medina family en masse decided to accompany Gabriel. Some Australians and American turned up their noses. "He was young and needed to feel safe. But someone who is different may generate criticism. Today, we see other athletes with family members," Simone says. Nos anos seguintes, sob holofotes, fez bons resultados, mas derrapou com a pressão do favoritismo, com contusões e com o endurecimento do critério dos juízes em relação a seu surfe progressivo. Em 2014, driblou as adversidades para vencer com um repertório clássico, que causa menos lesões. Liderou quase a temporada inteira. "Percebi que, do jeito que gosto de surfar, o risco aumenta. Passei a fazer mais o lip-base (convencional). Pô, se os caras estavam vencendo assim, por que não eu? Funciona!" Até a decisão, no Havaí, Gabriel, com 20 anos, tinha sido campeão em três etapas, todas em locações prime: Austrália, Fiji e Taiti. A última, em especial, assombrou o mundo. Na ocasião, bateu o rei Slater, dessa vez em seu reino, no mais épico evento da história do esporte. A derrota custou tanto ao americano que ele mandou um recado pela rede social. Muitos leram como um jogo psicológico: "Parabéns #gabrielmedina por sua performance nesta semana. Não se fala de outra coisa, senão desse garoto, com razão. É o cara mais perigoso do mundo do surfe. Farei o possível para tentar parar esse garoto. Sou um grande fã do surfe dele, é um cara muito legal”.

Aloof, Gabriel escapes the rumors. "When it happens, I take a walk." So much concentration yields results. In the first season, in 2011, he won two rounds. In the following years, under the spotlight, he achieved good results, but slipped under the pressure of favoritism, with injuries, and under the tightening of the judges' criteria in relation to his progressive surfing style. In 2014, he trounced his adversaries to win with a classic repertoire, which causes fewer injuries. He was in the lead for almost the entire season. "I realized that with the way I like to surf, there is increased risk. I started surfing more lip-to-base (conventional). Well, if those guys were winning that way, why not me? It works!" By that decision, in Hawaii, Gabriel, at 20 years old, has won three steps, all in prime locations: Australia, Fiji, and Tahiti. The last one, in particular, astonished the world. On that occasion, he beat the king, Slater, this time in his own kingdom, at the most epic event in the history of the sport. The defeat cost the American so much that he send a message on the social networks. Many read it as a psychological game: "Congrats are in order for Gabriel Medina and his performance this week. There are more conversations happening about this guy than anyone and for good reason. He's the most dangerous guy in the world of surfing. Even though I'm gonna do everything in my power to stop this guy this year, I'm a big fan of his surfing and he's a really good guy."

The big press, which had only timidly covered the sport, started sending full teams to the events. Samsung, sponsor of the circuit, signed a contract with the surfer, also bankrolled by brands such as Guaraná Antarctica, Oi, Mitsubishi Motors, Oakley, Gorilla, FCS, Vult Cosmética, and Coppertone Sport. The Australian magazine Tracks speculates that Gabriel's earnings come to US$7 million a year. Jaime Medina, o tio que cuida da agenda, blinda Gabriel para que nada lhe suba à cabeça. “Ele terá ao menos 15 anos de circuito mundial. Para resguardá-lo, a estratégia é falar em público apenas após os eventos. Antes, o foco é no treino", explica. Nem mesmo a demora das ondas a chegar em Pipeline, em dezembro, na última etapa do Mundial de 2014, tirou a concentração do atleta. Foi no arquipélago havaiano, diante de conterrâneos de todos os tipos – do clássico surfista amador aficionado, que arrumou umas folgas no escritório para ver a final de perto, ao jogador de futebol Alexandre Pato – que Gabriel tornou-se um novo orgulho de uma nação que adora ídolos do esporte. Não deu para Slater e nem para o australiano Mick Fanning, seu maior adversário na competição. Ainda nas quartas de final, Gabriel sagrou-se mais um brasileiro campeão do mundo. Jaime Medina, the uncle who takes care of the schedule, shields Gabriel so that nothing goes to his head. "He'll have at least 15 years on the world circuit. To protect him, the strategy is to speak in public only after the events. Beforehand, the focus in on the training," he explains. Not even the waves’ delay to arrive at Pipeline, on December, in the last step of the 2014 World Championship, has taken away the focus of the athlete. It was in the Hawaiian archipelagos that, in front of all kinds of fellow countrymen – from the classic fanatic amateur surfer, that arranged some vacation from the office to watch the final up close, to the soccer player Alexandre Pato –, Gabriel became the new pride of a nation that loves sports idols. It didn't work out for Slater and the Australian Mick Fanning, his biggest opponent in the competition. Even in the quarterfinals, Gabriel was crowned one more Brazilian world champion. Trophy in hand, between tears, he raised his voice to thank those who were decisive for the most beautiful history on national surf: his family. And promised: in 2015 there will be more.

erta vez, em uma festa junina, uma família reunida observando os fogos de artifício chamou a atenção de Miguel Del Castillo. Ele gostou da imagem e fez uma menção no bloco de notas do celular, assim como faz sempre que vê ou ouve algo que lhe interessa. A cena foi mais tarde por ele recuperada e hoje está retratada em Colônia, um dos textos de Restinga, seu primeiro livro, uma compilação de dez contos e uma novela escritos ao longo de cinco anos e que chega às livrarias no dia 20 de janeiro.

ne time, at a June festival, a family gathered watching the fireworks caught Miguel Del Castillo's attention. He liked the image and made note of it in his cell phone's notepad application, as he always does when he sees or hears something that sparks his interest. He later recalled the scene and now it is portrayed in Colônia, one of the texts of Restinga, his first book, a compilation of ten short stories and one novelette written over five years and which hits bookstores on January 20.

São quadros tão corriqueiros como esse que costumam desencadear o processo criativo do carioca de 27 anos, considerado um dos autores mais promissores da nova geração nacional – seu nome foi citado até pela revista britânica Granta, em 2012. Porém, a história de Miguel com as letras não é das mais convencionais. Apesar de ter lido muito na infância e na adolescência – da Série Vaga-lume a Clarice Lispector –, decidiu cursar arquitetura: "Mas no meio da faculdade acompanhei umas obras e saquei que não daria certo", explica. Foi aí então que começou a se interessar pela literatura. Já frequentando algumas disciplinas do curso de letras, inscreveu em um concurso seu primeiro conto, Carta para Ana, e foi o vencedor. "Eu era o único aluno de fora do curso. Foi bem surpreendente", lembra. Sua vida começou a tomar outro rumo quando conheceu a fotógrafa e designer paulistana Carolina Ribeiro, 35 anos. Após um namoro de seis meses na ponte aérea – na época ele vivia entre a Joatinga, onde mora seu pai, e a Barra da Tijuca, bairro escolhido pela mãe –, conseguiu um estágio em São Paulo e mudou-se definitivamente. A oportunidade, a propósito, fez com que o então estudante abandonasse de vez a arquitetura para assumir uma vaga de assistente editorial na Cosac Naify, onde trabalha até hoje editando livros de fotografia. Mas a decisão de virar escritor só aconteceu depois, em 2012. Foi naquele ano que mandou um conto escrito em 2009 para um concurso da Granta, publicação que já revelou nomes como Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie e Jonathan Safran Foer. Violeta fala de sua tia-avó uruguaia – o pai trocou Montevidéu pelo Rio aos 22 anos, fugindo da ditadura militar – e de seu primo, Miguel Angel, de quem herdou o nome. A empreitada deu certo e ele entrou para a lista dos 20 melhores escritores brasileiros com menos de 40 anos, ao lado de nomes como Daniel Galera, Michel Laub e Antonio Prata.

It is such commonplace pictures as this one which usually spark the creative process of the 27-year-old Rio de Janeiro native, considered one of the most promising authors of the new Brazilian generation – his name was even indicated by British magazine Granta in 2012. But Miguel's story with writing is not among the most conventional. Despite having read a lot in his childhood and adolescence – everything from the Firefly Series to Clarice Lispector – he decided to study architecture: "But in the middle of college, I was following one of the works and I realized that it wouldn't go well," he explains. That was when he started to become interested in literature. Already attending some courses of the writing program, he enrolled in a contest with his first story, Carta para Ana, and was the winner. "I was the only student from outside the program. It was really surprising," he recalls.

His life began to take a new direction when he met São Paulo photographer and designer Carolina Ribeiro, 35. After an "airbridge courtship" of six months – at the time he was living between Joatinga, where his father lives, and Barra da Tijuca, the neighborhood chosen by his mother – he managed to get an internship in São Paulo and moved there definitively. The internship, incidentally, meant that the then-student would abandon architecture for good to take a editorial assistant opening at Cosac Naify, where he still works, editing photography books. But the decision to become a writer came only later, in 2012. It was in that year that he sent a short story written in 2009 to a contest sponsored by Granta, a publication which has brought to light names such as Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie, and Jonathan Safran Foer. Violeta is about his great-aunt from Uruguay – his father moved from Montevideo to Rio at 22, fleeing the military dictatorship – and his cousin, Miguel Angel, whom he was named after. The gambit paid off, and he earned a place on the list of the 20 best Brazilian authors under 40, next to names such as Daniel Galera, Michel Laub, and Antonio Prata.

Na descrição dos eleitos, o editor Marcelo Ferroni mencionou que Violeta fazia parte do primeiro livro de Miguel, no qual ele estaria trabalhando. "Mas não tinha livro nenhum! Ele escreveu para me dar uma força e acabou dando certo”, explica. Decidido a seguir este caminho, Miguel apresentou seus escritos para o editor André Conti, da Companhia das Letras, e, depois de muito burilar, lapidar e reescrever, os dois chegaram à versão final, que agora é lançada. "O Miguel tem um projeto literário riquíssimo. Basta ver como os contos se aproximam e se afastam num movimento deliberado e extremamente sofisticado", elogia André. Restinga é também o nome da primeira narrativa da obra, em que uma mulher resolve levar a mãe doente para realizar um sonho: conhecer a Restinga da Marambaia, no Rio. “Gosto dessa imagem, uma coisa muito fina que entra no mar. Parece frágil, mas ao mesmo tempo é muito forte”, diz ele, sobre a escolha do título. Em comum, seus textos têm alguns temas: relações familiares, o estar em trânsito, a falta de comunicação entre as pessoas e o mar. Este último aparece sempre, mesmo que em detalhes, como no biquíni de uma personagem. “Eu era zero praieiro quando morava no Rio. Mas em São Paulo sinto falta do mar como ponto de referência, de ver onde a cidade termina.” O livro é dedicado a Carolina, sua primeira leitora. “É por ela que eu vejo se o negócio está funcionando ou não”, conta. Hoje o casal vive num apartamento em Higienópolis, bairro nobre da capital paulista. É lá que Miguel escreve, principalmente nas madrugadas e nos fins de semana.

In the description of those selected, editor Marcelo Ferroni mentioned that Violeta was part of Miguel's first book, which he would be working on. "But I didn't have any book! He wrote that to give me some strength, and it ended up working out," he explains. Having decided to follow this path, Miguel presented his writings to editor André Conti at Companhia das Letras, and after much honing, polishing, and rewriting, the two reached the final version, which is now released. "Miguel has a very rich literary skill. You can just see how the stories zoom in and out in a deliberate and extremely sophisticated movement," André praises. Restinga is also the name of the first narrative of the work, in which a woman decides to take her sick mother to realize a dream: to see the salt marsh of Marambaia, in Rio. "I like this image, something very delicate that enters the sea. It looks fragile, but at the same time it's very strong," he says of the choice of title. His texts have a few themes in common: family relations, being in transit, the lack of communication between people, and the sea. The sea always appears, even in details, such as in one character's bikini. "I wasn't a beachgoer at all when I lived in Rio. But in São Paulo, I miss the sea as a point of reference to see where the city ends." The book is dedicated to Carolina, his first reader. "It is through her that I see whether the deal is working or not," he says. Today, the couple lives in an apartment in Higienópolis, an upscale neighborhood of the São Paulo capital. That is where Miguel writes,

No mês passado, no entanto, sua rotina foi interrompida, pois os dois tiveram de se mudar temporariamente para a casa dos pais de Carol, no Morumbi – onde foram feitas as fotos desta matéria –, por conta de uma reforma. Como esperam um bebê para março, estão adaptando o lar para a chegada do novo integrante da família. Mas as inspirações cotidianas de Miguel não param. Ele já tem uma ideia (que prefere não revelar) para uma próxima história, dessa vez mais longa. Quem sabe um romance. “Primeiro livro é como disco de banda. Você fica dez anos fazendo, e depois tem que entregar o próximo logo”, brinca, enquanto observa duas mulheres conversando animadamente em um banco do condomínio, talvez o próximo registro de seu bloco de notas.

Since they are expecting a baby in March, they are adapting their home for the little boy's arrival. But Miguel's daily inspirations haven't stopped. He already has an idea (which he prefers not to reveal) for his next story, a longer on this time. Maybe a novel, who knows? "A first book is like a band's album. You spend ten years making it and afterward you have to deliver the next one right away," he jokes, while observing two women in animated conversation on a bench in the gated neighborhood, perhaps the next note in his notepad.

Foi nas salas de aula do Colégio Santa Cruz, na Zona Oeste de São Paulo, que três amigos apaixonados por esportes começaram a maquinar o que mais tarde se tornaria a Track&Field. Fred Wagner, Roberto Azevedo e Ricardo Rosseti sequer haviam concluído o Ensino Médio, nos anos 1980, quando despertou o seu tino empreendedor. Bolavam desenhos, compravam tecidos, estampavam camisetas e as vendiam para aqueles que foram seus primeiros clientes, os colegas de classe. O empenho dos jovens logo deu fruto: em 1988, o trio abriu uma pequena confecção e passou a fornecer roupas para marcas de surfe. Até que, em 1990, inauguraram, no Shopping Jardim Sul, na capital paulista, a primeira unidade de sua grife especializada em roupas e artigos esportivos – e 100% nacional. Hoje, 25 anos depois, a Track&Field é uma das grandes marcas brasileiras a competir igualmente com as internacionais. O segredo, segundo Wagner, é que a empresa aposta em suas próprias ideias. “Nós não nos pautamos na concorrência. Olhamos sempre para o consumidor. Queremos oferecer o que ele precisa e da melhor forma possível", diz. Atualmente, além da linha esportiva, com roupas e acessórios, ela também possui uma coleção de moda praia. Suas estratégias baseiam-se em três pilares básicos. O primeiro é a tecnologia: a marca aposta em tecidos exclusivos para melhorar o desempenho dos atletas – como o thermodry, que tem acabamento antimicrobiano e elimina o suor do corpo rapidamente. O segundo é o investimento em moda, seguindo as tendência das passarelas. E o terceiro é a experiência de varejo, com foco total no atendimento. O complemento, de acordo com Wagner, surgiu com a T&F Run Series, corrida criada em 2004 e realizada hoje em 60 pontos do País, com mais de 130 mil participantes. A marca começou 2015 com 123 lojas, sendo 80 delas de franqueados, e só não chegou fisicamente ainda a Aracaju e Amapá. Apesar de brasileira de corpo e alma, não se faz de rogada quando o assunto é a expansão internacional. Nova York conta com uma Track&Field desde 2010 e a previsão é a inauguração de outra unidade em agosto. Já Los Angeles deve receber a primeira loja da grife ainda neste semestre.

It was in the classroons of Santa Cruz school, in the West Zone of São Paulo, that three sports-loving friends began to devise what would later become Track&Field. Fred Wagner, Roberto Azevedo, and Ricardo Rosseti hadn't even finished high school, in the 1980s, when their entrepreneurial acumen began. They dreamed up designs, bought fabrics, printed t-shirts, and sold them to people who were their first customers, their classmates. The young men's efforts soon paid off: in 1988, the trio opened a small production facility and began supplying clothing to surfing brands. Then, in 1990, in the Jardim Sul shopping mall in the São Paulo capital, they inaugurated the first unit of their brand, specialized in sports clothing and articles – all 100% Brazilian. Today, 25 years later, Track&Field is one of the big Brazilian brands to compete on equal footing with the international brands. The secret, according to Wagner, is that the company relies on its own ideas. "We don't take guidance from the competition; we always look to the consumer. We want to offer what the consumer needs, and in the best way possible," he says. Currently, in addition to the sports line, with clothes and accessories, it also has a beach fashion collection. It strategies are based on three basic pillars. The first is the technology: the brand relies on exclusive fabrics to improve athletes' performance – such as Thermodry, which has an anti-microbial finish and cuts off the sweat from the body quickly. The second is the investment in fashion, following the trends of the catwalks. And the third is the retail experience, with a total focus on service. The complement, according to Wagner, came with the T&F Run Series, a race created in 2004 and now held at 60 locations, with more than 130,000 participants across the country. The brand began 2015 with 123 stores, with 80 of them being franchises, and the only areas it has not yet physically reached are Aracaju and Amapá. No dia 1º de dezembro, pontualmente às 23h27, o Airbus A330-200 batizado de América Azul percorreu a pista do Aeroporto de Viracopos, em Campinas, para ganhar os céus em direção a Fort Lauderdade/Miami, na Flórida, e marcar o início de mais um capítulo na trajetória da Azul. O primeiro voo internacional da mais nova companhia de bandeira brasileira a operar rotas no exterior teve como principais espectadores os 272 Clientes que ocupavam todos os assentos do jato. Quatorze dias depois, em 15 de dezembro – data em que a Azul celebrou seis anos de história –, o sentimento de estreia se repetiu: às 11h04 partiu do Aeroporto de Viracopos a primeira aeronave A330-200 rumo à cidade de Orlando, também na Flórida, o segundo destino norte-americano atendido pela empresa. Agora, ambas as rotas são diárias e diretas. Mais uma conquista a ser comemorada. "Estamos felizes e emocionados por termos vivenciado este momento único na história da companhia. Trabalhamos de forma intensa para consolidar o serviço internacional em tempo recorde e conseguimos. Agora, vamos levar ainda mais brasileiros a dois dos destinos mais procurados fora do País. Mas, além de transportar os Clientes, queremos que a Experiência Azul internacional seja inesquecível", afirma Antonoaldo Neves, presidente da Azul. Foram apenas sete meses de preparação. Desde o anúncio do início das frequências para os Estados Unidos, no fim de abril de 2014, a empresa recebeu cinco A330-200, solicitou e teve aprovação de autoridades brasileiras e norte-americanas para as rotas, iniciou a venda de passagens, desenvolveu o serviço de bordo e treinou Tripulantes. Concentradas em Campinas, o maior hub da companhia, as operações internacionais permitem que Clientes de Norte a Sul do Brasil possam chegar aos Estados Unidos com apenas uma conexão. Isso se deve à abrangência de sua malha aérea – mais de 100 destinos atendidos no País.

On December 1, at 11:27 PM sharp, the Airbus A330-200 christened as the América Azul sped across the runway at Viracopos Airport, in Campinas, to take to the skies bound for Fort Lauderdale/Miami, in Florida, and to mark the start of yet another chapter in Azul's history. The first international flight of yet another new company under the Brazilian flag to operate routes abroad had, as its main spectators, the 272 customers who occupied all the seats of the jet. Fifteen days later, on December 16 - the date on which Azul celebrated its 6th year of history – the debut feeling was repeated: at 11:04 AM, the first A330-200 aircraft bound for Orlando, also in Florida, the second American destination served by the company, took off from Viracopos Airport. Now, both routes are daily and direct. Another victory to be commemorated. "We are happy and thrilled to have experienced this unique moment in the history of the company. We worked intensely to consolidate the international service in record time, and we succeeded. Now, we will bring even more Brazilian to two of the most popular destinations outside the country. But, in addition to transporting customers, we want for the international Azul Experience to be unforgettable," affirms Antonoaldo Neves, president of Azul. There were only seven months of preparation. Since the announcement of the start of the regular flights to the United States, at the end of April 2014, the company has received five A330-200, requested and obtained the approval of Brazilian and American authorities for the routes, started the ticket sales, developed the on-board service, and trained crew members. Concentrated in Campinas, the company's major hub, the international operations allow for customers from the North to the South of Brazil to reach the United States with only one connection. To do so, it is investing tens of millions of dollars to improve the interiors of Airbus A330-200 aircraft which are already serving the new regular flights to Fort Lauderdale/Miami and Orlando. Each of them will undergo, until mid-year, a complete program of revitalization which encompass all cabin. Customers will be able to enjoy, for example, Business Xtra class, with new, comfortable seats with ergonomically designed details, reclining 180o and ensuring the maximum in comfort for reading, sleeping, or enjoying the entertainment programming. Com apenas seis meses de existência, o ReciclAzul soma números expressivos: 1,5 tonelada de alumínio reciclada – o material provém das latinhas coletadas em voos com destino ao Aeroporto de Viracopos, em Campinas. Com a iniciativa, a companhia gera ganho social, ambiental e econômico. Este ano, o projeto deve ser ampliado para que a coleta também seja feita nas rotas para Guarulhos (SP) e Confins (MG). With only six months of existence, ReciclAzul has some significant totals: 1.5 tons of aluminum recycled – the material comes from cans collected on flights bound for Viracopos Airport, in Campinas. With the initiative, the company generates social, environmental, and economic advantages. This year, the project should be expanded so that the collection is also done on routes to Guarulhos (SP) and Confins (MG).

Dia a dia baiano Bahian routine

O paulistano Raphael Briest largou o terno e a gravata em 2004 para se aventurar na fotografia. Hoje, aos 37 anos, faz trabalhos editoriais, publicitários e pessoais, registrando de arquitetura a gastronomia, passando por retratos e cenas do cotidiano. Esta imagem foi feita em Salvador, quando ele clicava um hotel butique. Em frente à hospedagem havia esta janela de mercearia, numa ladeira bem íngreme, que lhe chamou a atenção. “Em um determinado momento, virei a lente e fiz o registro”, lembra Briest. São Paulo native Raphael Briest cast off his suit and tie in 2004 to embark on an adventure in photography. Now, at 37, he does work in publishing and advertising and personal clients, snapping everything from architecture to cuisine, portraits, and scenes of everyday life. This image was taken in Salvador, when he has photographing a boutique hotel. In front of it, there was this grocer’s shop window on a very steep side street, that caught his attention. “At a certain moment, I turned the lens and took the shot,” Briest remembers.
