The planning of the new Dealership started when Sandal took over Almondbury in 2008 and we’ve worked incredibly hard to achieve the wonderful facility. Introducing the new BMW 3 Series Touring
The opening of the new Huddersfield Dealership coincided with the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games of which the BMW Group were the official automotive partner. The games were a tremendous success and it has shown how ‘great’ Great Britain is. Now we have the Paralympics to look forward to, please look out for our sponsored Paralympian, Hannah Cockroft who is a strong candidate for a medal. Hannah is someone who has so much passion for her sport and we are really delighted to be able to support her. She was the first athlete to break a world record in the London 2012 stadium and has made the into Team GB.

To embrace the success of the games BMW has brought out a range of offers and as always Sandal have enhanced these further. We have highlighted some of these within this edition. These offers do make very attractive reading, especially when you consider you can drive a new BMW 116d Sport for only £280 deposit and £280 per month, just in time for the new '62' plate registration. MINI was also very heavily involved with the games under the Team GB banner. It was great to see a MINI in the opening ceremony, a real crowd pleaser. In addition the electric radio controlled MINI’s transporting some of the equipment around the arena were a great feature. As the games have closed, MINI have also introduced some finance plans with APR’s as low as 3.9%, please see later in this edition for full details. The opening of Sandal Huddersfield brings an additional advantage in terms of BMW and MINI Approved Used Cars. A drive and stay to West Tanfield, North Yorkshire with Greg Stainton
Since our last 'Drive to' proved so popular with Sandal Living readers, Sandal's Marketing Manager thought it would be great to extend the 'drive to' feature and include his families first ever camping experience. Greg was invited to 'go camping' with some friends of the family, a daunting experience that provided the start of an interesting adventure. Let's face it, camping isn't for everyone but you never know what may happen when you keep an open mind! Camping in the UK is a little bit of a gamble, especially when the jet stream isn't doing what it should, bringing the wettest July on record. This trip had been booked since April, and in April it sounded like a great idea. After careful research into tents and equipment Greg made the purchase of a four man (or in this case, one man, one woman, two children and a Dalmatian), four sleeping bags, two double airbeds.....you get the idea, a lot of equipment, so much, that a large car would be needed. Fortunately for Greg, Sandal have a superb range of demonstrator vehicles and Sandal agreed to loan him a stunning 520d M Sport Touring. Not only would this provide lots of space but would also provide lots of style, comfort and some
lovely thought out features which became apparent over the weekend in the middle of July. Car packed and ready? Check.... family ready? Check.... beautiful weather? Check... of course not, heavy rain all morning. Not a problem, at least everyone had a 'dry' run setting the tent up the week before and of course loads and loads of clothes, towels and rainproof's. All that was left was to put the postcode into the inbuilt satellite navigation and set off. The automatic windscreen wipers were put to the test on the journey up via the A1, but wait, was that some brighter sky ahead, the weather forecasters were quoting the 'start' of the summer, down south, but could it happen in North Yorkshire? The automatic windscreen wipers stopped, they worked perfectly and didn't come again for the whole weekend, someone was looking after the Stainton Family. Arrival at the campsite and all passengers were fully relaxed. The mix of motorway and twisting, turning B-roads put the load-eating BMW through its paces. The 520d's engine is responsive and power is fed to the rear wheels smoothly when needed. This is a big car but feels extremely confident with little roll around the corners, a joy to experience. Cruising on the A1 at 70 miles per hour the rev clock was a fair way under 2000 revs
incredible eight speed automatic gearbox fitted to this demonstrator. Revs this low mean excellent efficiency, so much so, for the first time ever, an automatic gearbox can be more efficient than a manual. Another triumph for the BMW engineers. So everyone's arrived relaxed, the tent is next but where to park? First thought was next to the River Ure, a little noisy after all the rain, but at least the rain had stopped. Put it over there, (slightly away from the noise) was suggested, job done, tent up, and fortunately as easy as the practice run. Next, the air beds, the family needed to be comfy. The tent pack came with its own electric air pump running from the 12v power sockets and the great thing, there's a socket in the boot of this Touring model, it was as if someone put it there for moments just like these! Beds up in a matter of minutes and not a drop of sweat to be seen, this camping lark was starting to look good, even the sun started to make a bit of an appearance. The other campers started to arrive just as the Stainton Family were tucking into true camping food, hot dogs! The BMW got

a lot of admiring looks from the other campers (whose cars were full to bursting). They couldn't believe we have got four people, a dog and all the necessary equipment in. To be honest that bit wasn't hard, the under floor storage certainly helped. A great design feature. Everyone was settled in and the exploring of the campsite began. All facilities were on offer, toilets (a little walk away) washing up area, showers, laundrette, a small shop. The site (Sleningford Watermill Caravan & Camping Park, North Stainley) is a David Bellamy Conservation Gold Award and a AA Four Pennants site, which in terms of camp sites counts for a lot. A perfect introduction as a first time camp site. Beautiful scenery, friendly staff, the River Ure flowing right through it, a sandy beach, a beach, yes a beach, one part with pebbles and another with lovely soft sand, the children were really happy with the thought of building sand castles, swimming in the river and spending time with some of their friends. In fact as everyone retired to bed under a stunning star infested night sky all was looking rosy. The first night was cold, really cold. The cold was only felt from the head as this was the only part showing from the 'Mummy' style sleeping bags. Woolley hats and hoodies fixed that problem and a reasonable night's sleep was had by all. Clear blue sky, bacon sandwiches and pots of coffee from the portable stove started the morning off. Now the kids wanted to do something, blow up next doors dingy and head to river. Getting real value from the tent set, the electric pump was used again. The engine was left running as everyone thought the boat would take ages to inflate. Not so, it was quick. The campsite was very quiet, just like the 520d's engine, in fact it was that quiet that it took some time after the dingy was blown up to remember it was still running. A trip into West Tanfield and their extremely well stocked Post Office was needed to get some extra stocks. The village is like stepping back in time. There is a monument called the Marmion Tower. This impressive gatehouse formed the principal entrance to a lost manor house, described in the 1530's by Leland as possessing 'a fair tourid gate and a haule of squarid stone'.

grandmother of Queen Karerine Parr, last wife of Henry VIII. The tower is now in the care of English Heritage and is free to enter and explore. West Tanfield has two lovely 'British' pubs, The Bruce Arms and the Bull Inn. It was the latter, with it's wonderful river side Pub garden that the Stainton's lunched at. The menu, a very traditional 'Pub Food' affair with favourites like Scampi, Lasagne and Gammon. Some of the dishes were served 'in the basket' a dying trend but great to see here. The village is on the edge of both the Yorkshire Dales and the Vale of York. There are plenty of enjoyable walks, The Sanctuary Cross walk in Ripon and the Mosaic Walk starting at Kirkby Malzeard moor are just two. If the camping trip was longer, a trip to Lightwater Valley would have been on the cards as it is only 2 miles from the camp site, but time had caught up and it was time to pack the car up again. The split tail gate makes loading a doddle. Lift the full boot for the larger items and then just the glass section for quick access. Another item that proved useful was how much cooler the interior of the car was with the sun protection glass. The car had been sitting in the sun for a few hours when the youngest of the party wanted a nap and climbed into the back seat, it was noticeably cooler than the front of the car. Some people think it's only for style but without doubt sun protection glass has a practical benefit too. The journey home was quiet, the children fell asleep from all the fresh air, probably dreaming of their next camping trip.

HISTORY WAS WITHIN REACH AT SANDAL. What a day Saturday 23 June turned out to be! Just a day before the Olympic Torch Relay passed within a few miles of Huddersfield and two days before it hit the streets in Wakefield, Sandal celebrated the momentous occasion in our dealerships with our own Olympic Torch Relay event. We were absolutely thrilled to see so many of our customers bringing the London 2012 Games to life. We were lucky enough to have a London 2012 Olympic Torch in the dealership for just a few hours and over 800 customers at the Dealerships were able to have their photograph taken holding the Torch. Everyone was in great spirits and particularly enjoyed meeting our local athletes, Emily Freeman and Hannah Cockroft. We were able to secure a pair of tickets to a London 2012 event inside the Olympic Park and our winning customers secured tickets that included the 100m women’s final on Saturday 4th August, one of the highlights of the Games. A live draw every half hour to win four pairs of Men's Group C London 2012 Football Tickets to see Brazil v New Zealand were also up for grabs. Seven sets were given away on the day. Colouring competitions, face painter and Wii Mario and Sonic at London 2012 games challenge were all set up for our younger guests, we even had our own Ice Cream Van with complimentary refreshments. One of our customers attending brought in her very own torch from the 1992 Barcelona Torch Relay to proudly show off next to the golden torch of this year’s games. Jason Carter told Sandal Living “We introduced a ticketing system so customers could enjoy our facilities and not have to queue. The atmosphere was fabulous, it was great to see so many customers and their families in our showrooms enjoying the event. INTRODUCING THE NEW BMW 3 SERIES TOURING. There's plenty to discover in the new BMW 3 Series Touring, with its range of efficient yet powerful petrol and diesel engines, class-leading luggage space and innovative new features, such as an automatic opening and closing tailgate. From the tip of the nose to the B-pillar, the 3 Series Touring is exactly the same as its Saloon sibling, an expressive front end, accentuated by the 37mm wider track over the previous generation model, creates the perfect foundation for the front styling. Twin headlamps, with LED accent lights, combine with the gently forward sloping BMW kidney grille to generate a purposeful face, further highlighted by the additional outer air intakes below the headlamps and the sweeping lines of the bonnet that converge on the grille. From the side, the new 3 Series Touring is defined by the sweeping silhouette, with its smoothly sloping roofline and glasshouse that extends to the rear of the vehicle. The new car is 97mm longer overall and 50mm longer in the wheelbase
than before and that, together with the steeply raked D-pillars, angle of the rear window and the traditional ‘Hofmeister kink’, adds a real sense of forward motion to the profile. At the rear, the spoiler ‘peak’ that accentuates the long roofline, together with the horizontal lines and L-shaped lights set far out to the edges, combine with the 48mm wider track to plant the design on the road. The interior design of the new BMW 3 Series Touring is identical to that of the recently introduced 3 Series Saloon. It’s a cockpit with a traditional BMW driver focus creating a sporty interior ambience that is conducive to driving enjoyment. The clear, circular dials and the flatscreen monitor for the iDrive system integrated into the dashboard structure, define the instrument panel. The iDrive controller is mounted within easy reach of the driver down on the centre console. ALL STAND PLEASE FOR THE MINI HORN SECTION In support of Team GB, MINI teamed up with the Lo n d o n P h i l h a r m o n i c Orchestra ahead of the London 2012 Games to create a rousing rendition of God Save the Queen using just MINI horns. The MINI Orchestra was made up of nine musicians from the London Philharmonic horn section, who usually play wind and brass instruments including the clarinet, trumpet and trombone. In the MINI Orchestra they played the horns of nine red, white and blue MINI London 2012 spe cial editions. The MINI Orchestra was conducted by Gareth Newman, who said ‘It’s the first time that we’ve attempted to play a piece using just car horns, and it was a fun and unique experience.” Jochen Goller, Director, MINI UK said, “MINI is best known for highly tuned, sweet sounding engines,
so we are delighted to discover that a patriotic harmony can be created with the car’s horn. Sandal's Annual Golf Day was yet another Tee'rrific day. Record numbers of customers played in the 2012 Sandal Annual Golf Days. Huddersfield was held at the wonderful course at Meltham on Thursday 28 June 2012 and Wakefield customers played at the Normanton Golf course on Thursday 5 July 2012. Both days' weather forecast was for torrential rain all day, but somehow it managed to stay reasonably dry with only a couple of showers. That's the only thing that Sandal cannot arrange, so how lucky we all were! What Sandal do arrange for our customers is a day that provides great golf with fantastic hospitality all courtesy of Sandal BMW and MINI. Players also receive some wonderful complimentary golf gifts on the day. During registration, bacon sandwiches and refreshments were served and a shotgun start of 18 holes started at 1pm. One particular shot, landed only inches from a hole in one, if only it went in it would have earned the player a brand new BMW 1 Series, but that's golf! Stories of 'good' and 'bad' golf were banded around whilst having drinks on the club's patio areas before presentations and an exquisite three course meal. The top six players from the day went through to the first round of the BMW Golf Cup International at Royal Birkdale. With around 100,000 amateur golfers, the BMW Golf Cup is the most renowned and largest international tournament series for amateurs. Congratulations to Paul Chambers who came 3rd and qualifies for the next round, held at Turnberry. We will bring you news on how Paul gets on in the next issue of Sandal Living and of course via sandalbmw.co.uk. Sandal Sales Manager, Mathew Crowhurst trains for the Marathon Des Sables What does our Wakefield BMW Sales Manager like to do when away from running a busy sales department and ensuring the satisfaction of our customers? Well you might be surprised to learn that he is preparing to compete in what is often described as the hardest footrace in the world. Ever fancied running 250km across the Moroccon Sahara desert, across barren desert plains, mountains and huge sand dune fields whilst carrying everything from food to something to sleep on for over 6 days and over 6 marathons in temperatures often exceeding 100°F!? So why should anyone want to put themselves through such a challenge and commit to the thousands of hours of training and sacrifices such an event requires? We were similarly confused and in between his commitments to Sandal BMW and his training we caught up with Mathew to ask him quite why he's doing this (and secretly to see if he's a little bit mad!!).
“How do you arrive to be an official entrant of the 2014 Marathon Des Sables?” I guess I reached a point around 4 years ago when I thought, I'm in my late-thirties, I've not done much in the way of exercise for ages, I'm joining a Gym! I guess it was one of those “New Year's Resolution” type intentions for which I was secretly convinced would fade away after a few visits. The opposite transpired and soon I was running some decent distances and enjoyed pushing myself just that bit further to see where my limits were. I continued this steady training for 2 years, juggling my desire to train with the usual commitments of a career and a family with 2 young children, when one night I watched a documentary about Eddie Izzard when he ran all around the UK in aid of Comic Relief. I thought, “if he can do that, how 36 Sandal Living
hard can it be?” So in June 2010 I set off from Hornsea on the East Coast with the final destination of Liverpool. I ran across the North of England, over the Pennines, (where I added 5 miles to my journey by getting lost) I finished four days later, exhausted but with a huge sense of achievement having covered 155 miles, the equivalent of 6 Marathons. In doing so I raised nearly £1,000 for the local hospice. Ever since that run I've read numerous books on ultradistance running and been drawn-in by the odd documentary, and again and again one race kept being mentioned as the ultimate challenge, that was the Marathon des Sables.
“How easy is it to gain a place on the Marathon Des Sables considering the difficulty of the race and do you need to prove you're fit enough for the challenge?” Places for the race are filled some 2 years in advance and within 90 minutes of the applications opening. I am quite fortunate to secure a place as the UK only receives around 200 places out of 800 worldwide places. In theory anybody may enter the race, but you are required to supply ECG tests and medical records to the race organisers prior to the race. Of course, a place on the start line is no guarantee that you will reach the end, so most competitors ensure they are of sufficient fitness themselves to tackle the race!
“You raised funds for a local hospice when you ran from coast to coast, are you intending on raising any money for charity this time?” Other than my personal desire to compete in the race, I have always intended to do this to raise as much funds as possible for Yorkshire Cancer Research, a charity who tirelessly work towards finding a cure for Cancer, a disease which has touched all our lives. I have committed to YCR that I will raise at least £10,000 in participating in the race. This commitment makes getting up at 5am to run around the streets of West Yorkshire in the pouring rain, slightly more bearable!
“You mention there that you are often out and about training at 5am, what training are you undertaking to ensure you can compete the race?” As the race is still well over a year away, I'm not yet doing any specific training geared towards the conditions I will endure during the race, (in fact this will be the most difficult part of the training. How can I replicate running in temperatures over 100°F in Yorkshire? I'm not sure the local Gym will be too happy if I take a treadmill into the Sauna!). For the last few months I have gradually increased the running distances to around 40-50 miles per week, and supplemented this with Spinning (Cycle Fit) classes, weight training and recently swimming to keep my fitness levels high. When the race is around 12 months away I will embark on a more specific training plan to prepare me for the fitness I will need during the race, including running somewhere between 80-100 miles per week.
“Well, that's some commitment! We wish you every success in your training over the coming months. FACTS MdS (Marathon of the Sands) Competitors must carry all personal belongings and food for the entire event in their backpack. Water and tents are supplied by the organizers. In 1994, Mauro Prosperi, a police officer from Rome, got lost in a sandstorm and wandered several hundred kilometres off course. He managed to live for the next nine days on a diet of boiled urine and dead bats. He lost over 13kg (30lbs) during his ordeal but returned to Morocco to race twice more. Three competitors have died during the race. As of 2009, Lahcen Ahansal from Morocco had won 10 titles, and his brother Mohammed Ahansal 3 titles.

YORKSHIRE CANCER RESEARCH Working in Yorkshire to beat cancer. Yorkshire Cancer Research is one of many cancer charities in the UK that work every day towards finding cures for different forms of the disease. They are the UK's largest regional medical research charity, funding cancer research that is carried out by world-class scientists and clinicians across Yorkshire and providing cancer information to help local people beat cancer.
In the 2009 race, there was heavy rain in the two days before the start of the race, causing the first and last day's stages to be cancelled due to flooding. This had never before occurred during the history of the MdS. To compensate, the 'long stage' was the longest in the race's history at 66 miles.
Together with their partner charities fighting cancer in the UK they have made many breakthroughs which have greatly improved the way they prevent, diagnose, treat and deal with the after-effects of the disease. Their work has been part of this vital progress and has saved the lives of many people in Yorkshire and around the world.

In this edition of Sandal Living our restaurant review took Marketing Manager Greg Stainton to Halifax and the award winning 'Design House' to sample their delights on a very wet Friday lunchtime. We will all remember this summer as the wettest in history and on the journey to Halifax the weather lived up to it's promise. We needed the quickest dash into the restaurant, any 100 metre athlete would have been proud. At least the welcome was warm. The restaurant has a very modern design with a long bar and comfy seating areas. As we passed the bar area, one diner had just had a steak sandwich delivered (from the bar menu). Looking very tasty, instantly it made the mouth water. I felt that good things were to come. We were seated in the restaurant area which had a wonderful menu. Two important things to note. One - The menu is changed every couple of months, not just a small change but as our waiter told us, virtually everything, which must keep the chefs busy and on their toes.

Two - The price of the set menus. Lunch £8.95 / Dinner £13.95 for two courses (starter and main). On the menu you have the option of paying an upgrade on certain dishes, but it was the £8.50 lunch I stuck with. You can nearly spend that at a fast food restaurant but here you are provided with quality food from not a one, but a two AA Rosette restaurant. Sticking with the set menu didn't disappoint. I had a duo of freshly prepared soups followed by chicken sausage, leek bread and butter pudding, whipped potato with a jus. Remember this was for £8.95. My colleague went for de constructed smoked haddock chowder with a £3.45 supplement and a very interesting sounding roulade of rabbit, lightly spiced potato and cauliflower and curry bubbles for an additional £4.45. Big spender I know, but that meal was just £16.65. Incredible value. The menu is worth a look at and is available online to view. Booking is advisable due the incredible value this restaurant offers. The bar offers a great selection of drinks to accompany your meal.
