Our fantastic, new state of the art Huddersfield dealership is under construction on Leeds Road. We have a full feature on pages eight and nine which will give Jason Carter, Operations Director you an insight into the wonderful facilities that will be coming soon. This facility will represent the BMW and MINI brands in a manner that reflects our business and we look forward to representing the most youthful brand model line up, with the finest Motor Dealer premises in the area. This Dealership will be headed up by Richard Avery, Dealer Principal and a big thank you must go to Tim Simons our Finance Director who has burnt the midnight oil to bring this project to conclusion. This development represents a significant multi million pound long term investment in Huddersfield which will also provide a wonderful working environment and a facility of which Sandal and Huddersfield will be proud. This facility, in addition to our Wakefield dealership, will then result in Sandal having the finest representation of the brands not only in West Yorkshire but in the UK. 2012 is also the year of the Olympic games to be held in the UK (of which BMW Group is the Official Automotive Partner) and we will ensure we are maximising our links with our local athletes to bring the spirit of the biggest event in 2012 to the local community and our dealerships. Since the last edition of Sandal Living back in 2009, the country has seen some very challenging times but I am pleased to report that we have had a great start to the year in BMW New Car sales. A large part of this success is attributable to the extremely competitive finance packages that are available throughout the range, offering incredible value. You will be able to see more detail later on in the magazine, but one example is a BMW 116i Sport for £299 per month, with only a £299 deposit! The latest face of the ‘ultimate sports saloon’ launched in February 2012. Here Sandal Living takes a look at what’s on offer. Now in its sixth-generation, the new BMW 3 Series Saloon is a winning combination of both ‘lean and mean’. BMW EfficientDynamics technologies bring class-leading fuel economy and low emissions while the athletic appearance and outstanding performance knocks the competition for six. The BMW 3 Series has dominated its segment for over 30 years so BMW has concentrated on enhancing features that will make the biggest difference. For example, the sporty new design incorporates energy-saving air inlets and the larger windows and low shoulder line make for a brighter interior. The dimensions of the car have been increased, yet the overall weight remains the same. Rear passengers now benefit from increased head and leg room, the boot offers 480 litres of storage space, that’s an additional 20 litres over the outgoing model, plus the front door pockets are large enough to hold a 1-litre bottle of water. The generosity continues across the range with an exceptionally high standard specification that includes Bluetooth, Cruise Control, USB, iDrive Controller and a 6.5” colour screen. Following three successful years BMW UK has renewed its partnership with MotorSport Vision (MSV), and will continue to offer high octane ‘M’ car thrills on some of Europe’s best circuits for the next three years. BMW’s class-leading M3 Coupé features as part of the everpopular RaceMaster driving experience at Brands Hatch in Kent and Oulton Park in Cheshire. Spring heralds the dawning of a new era for both Sandal and Huddersfield, with work now well underway on the stunning new, BMW and MINI dealership. Clues to the unique styling of the building are already evident, as illustrated in the pictures, but some innovative customer facilities still wait to be unveiled. Occupying a prime location on Leeds Road, the state of the art facility will create an outstanding gateway into Huddersfield. Situated within easy access to the M62 motorway, town centre and adjacent to the Great Northern retail park, the dealership also sits proudly near to the Galpharm Stadium, home of Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants, which can be seen from the site. Due for completion in June 2012 the opening will close one chapter in the progress and development of Sandal BMW and MINI in Huddersfield and will open a new and exciting story for customers and staff alike. 8 Sandal Living
Since Sandal acquired the BMW and MINI business for Huddersfield and the surrounding areas from JCT 600, back in September 2008, it was the explicit objective of the Directors to relocate to new premises. Keen to provide customer focussed and friendly facilities in keeping with the Sandal culture and the BMW and MINI brands, careful attention has been paid not only to location but, as importantly, on how to serve and accommodate the needs of our customers. Building on the success of the impressive dealership at Wakefield and drawing upon customer feedback and comments regarding the old site, significant time and attention to detail has been invested, striving to provide outstanding facilities that BMW and MINI customers will enjoy for years to come. Managing Director, David Bosomworth and Finance Director Tim Simons managed to secure the former 'Jewsons' site, which extends to over three acres, at the end of 2009. Tim commented “We spent several months looking for the ideal location which would provide sufficient, appropriate space for all areas of the business. Whilst location, visibility and presence

Further regeneration is proposed in the future with leisure and retail facilities situated behind Sandal and the Galpharm Stadium. The new dealership will sit perfectly with the 'new' surroundings, bringing a much needed boost to the area of Huddersfield. Sandal are very keen to work with local companies, suppliers and workforce and have encouraged the main contractor to do so.

Dirk Werner completes BMW driver line-up for the DTM. All seats are now taken for BMW’s return to the DTM: Dirk Werner (DE) has been confirmed as the sixth BMW Motorsport driver and will contest the 2012 DTM season at the wheel of a BMW M3 DTM. The 30 year old is switching from GT racing to the DTM project. Last season, Werner successfully raced in the colours of BMW Team RLL in the American Le Mans Series, finishing third in the GT Drivers’ Championship. Werner joins Andy Priaulx (GB), Augusto Farfus (BR), Bruno Spengler (CA), reigning DTM champion Martin Tomczyk (DE), and Joey Hand (US) at BMW. “As the sixth driver, Dirk Werner is the ideal way to complete our driving line-up,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Dirk convinced us he was the right man during the tests. The result of our efforts over the past few months is a line-up that we believe will achieve great things in the DTM. It boasts speed, experience and a host of international titles. I am pleased that our line-up has such an international feel to it. Two drivers from North America, a South American, a Brit, and two German drivers: our team also offers fans a lot of variety. Over the coming weeks we will be deciding exactly how the six drivers will be divided between our three teams.” Werner, who won the GT class in the American GRAND-AM series in 2007 and 2009, said: “I really enjoyed the last two seasons as a BMW works driver and have continued to develop as a racing driver. To take the step into DTM with BMW is fantastic. The immense strength in depth makes this series a big challenge for any driver, but it is precisely this kind of competition that I love. I instantly felt at home in the BMW M3 DTM at the first test, and obviously can’t wait for the first race with this car. We have a lot of work ahead of us before then, however, and I am highly motivated to get started.”
We play an individual based competition rather than a team event and the six best scoring players from each day will be invited to compete in one of a series of Regional Qualifiers at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Merseyside on Wednesday 25 July 2012 for the BMW Golf Cup International. Bar Biccari takes its name from a town and commune in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. The decor with this stunning building in Horbury’s towns centre creates an extremely warm and ‘real’ Italian authentic feel, which welcomes everyone from romantic couples, friends and families with children of all ages to that ‘special occasion’ evening out. It’s as a family we called to try the delights that were on offer. The four of us, Tracey (my wife), Lana and Mason (my lovely children) and myself booked in for a late Sunday Afternoon Lunch and headed to a restaurant that we had never stumbled upon before. Thoughts were running through my head of the last, and only time, I did a review of a restaurant for a magazine which was a paid for review, but ‘had’ to be written in a positive light, something that proved incredibly hard as it wasn’t at all inspiring. Fortunately, I can write this honestly. So, on with the review. As mentioned the building had a very ‘rustic’ and pleasant feel. The welcome from the staff was genuine, warm and sincere. As a family we all like eating out together, the children are lucky and regularly go to different restaurants with us. When the children’s menu arrived it was nice to see that a lot of care had been taken with the menu. A Starter, Main Course and Dessert followed by a Bambino-Cino (a warm milk with a dusting of chocolate) all for £5.50. What was more impressive was the ‘Grown-up’ feel of the dishes, no frozen potato smiles but a wonderful choice of starters, including freshly made Chicken Liver Pate served with Mustard Fruits and Toast, slowly cooked homemade Meatballs in a Tomato 'Ragu' along with Tuna Bean Salad. Main course choices included Steamed Fish of the Day served with Vegetables. Children being children they probably wouldn’t think twice about the names of the dishes and unlike the adults in this party, chose very quickly. Bar Biccari’s choice of drinks is, as you would expect, extensive. I chose a Peroni, a lager that was introduced to me by Sandal’s Operation Director, Jason Carter before it became available in ‘mainstream’ pubs. In my mind it did taste better in these surroundings and slipped down nicely. A nice fresh glass of Chardonnay and two Tangos were also delivered in a timely fashion to the table. After much to and fro with the extensive menu, Tracey picked Involtini Di Salmone Affumicato, a starter of
Smoked Salmon slices filled with Prawns on a Cucumber Carpaccio for £6.95. I chose to have the Roast Pork on Garlic and Chilli Kale with Crispy Pancetta and a Brandy and Cream reduction from the set Sunday Lunch Menu (two courses for £14.95 with a choice of three starters and three main courses). My choice was decided by the Pork. It can be hard to choose from the set menu and usually I just ‘pick one’ - this was my dilemma, the Tuscan Bean Crostini wouldn’t be my usual choice but hey ho. They say you first eat with your eyes. The beans looked great but my first bite was a surprise, it was cold! Then the flavours came through and all was well, in fact, very well and an empty plate followed. Tracey’s starter was also beautifully presented, tasting as good as it looked. Lana chose the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms which were without fault and again very well presented in a modern sloping bowl. Mason chose to save himself for his “Create your own Special Pizza”. Main courses arrived and once again all were presented superbly. My pork was so soft, nearly melting on the tongue and went so well with the strips of crispy Pancetta. The Supreme of Chicken with Paprika Onions, Chorizo and Tomato ordered from the Speciali menu was succulent and tender. The Chorizo complimented the dish which was well balanced with flavours. A couple of side dishes of perfectly cooked vegetables made it a filling and enjoyable meal. All was going so well here at this little piece of ‘Italy’ in Horbury that dessert couldn’t be fitted in, or could it? With a Speciali’s dessert menu that had delights of Sicilian Oranges seeped in Brandy and Caramel served with Vanilla Ice Cream or Almond and Cherry Panna Cotta Served with Cinnamon Shortbread, how could we refuse? I had the Pear and Ricotta Tart from the board (£4.50) and Tracey picked the Tiramisu (£4.45) from the main menu. Both were delicious and fortunately for us, incredibly light. The children’s ice cream was in Lana’s words “the best vanilla ice cream I have tasted”.
After we got shown to our table, we were given a variety of menu's, including the children's menu, adults and special menu. The waiter brought us a complimentary dish, which was bread that could be dipped in oil, also with some olives on the side. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. It was hard choosing what to eat, I liked how there was a starter on the children’s meal, which I do not usually have. For my starter I choose creamy mushrooms, when it came it was in a fancy bowl, the presentation of the dish was very good. For my main meal I ordered Creamy Ham and Mushroom Pasta, I thought it was very nice. It was very filling. For the pudding I ordered Vanilla Ice cream which was the best vanilla ice cream I have tasted, I don’t know how they did it. The staff were extremely nice. The toilets were clean, as I was to expect. Lana Stainton (Aged 12)
Reading this review back I have to say it all sounds too good, but is was. Will we be going back? You bet. It’s an hour’s round drive from home, but for us it was all worth it. So if you decide to venture to this stylish restaurant, please mention that you have read this review in Sandal Living.

MINI COUNTRYMAN GETS THE JOHN COOPER WORKS TREATMENT MINI’s exciting new model launch programme continues apace – literally – with the arrival of the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman. The performance oriented flagship four-door Countryman is now the sixth member of the JCW family. But it’s the first to combine the brand’s motorsport pedigree with the critically acclaimed ALL4 all-wheel drive system. The debut of MINI’s six speed automatic transmission as an optional extra is another unique feature on this car. Standard features include an advanced aerodynamic kit, lowered sport suspension, 18inch light alloy wheels, sports stripes and exclusive design features. It will go on sale in the autumn priced at £27,800. It takes the current MINI range beyond 40 variants for the first time, with still more to come. The MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is powered by a newly developed 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. It boasts a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and variable valve control based on Group’s VALVETRONIC technology. The power plant reaches its maximum output of 218 hp at 6,100 rpm and generates peak torque of 280 Nm between 2,000 and 5,600 rpm. The Overboost function briefly pushes this up to 300 Nm. Performance will not disappoint JCW fans. The Countryman accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds with either the manual or automatic transmission. Top speed is 140mph, or 139mph on the auto. The MINI JCW Countryman is the most powerful MINI production model ever. The ALL4 all-wheel-drive system uses an electromagnetic centre differential to distribute drive seamlessly between the front and rear axles. In normal conditions ALL4 allows 50 per cent of power to the rear wheels, rising to anything up to 100 per cent when the going gets tough. The chassis has been developed on the back of MINI and JCW’s motorsport expertise. It includes a front axle with MacPherson
struts, central-arm rear axle, electric power steering and a model specific, high performance braking system. John Cooper Works sports suspension is standard, with stiffened spring and damper settings, strengthened anti-roll bars and a 10-millimetre drop in ride height over the standard Countryman. DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) with DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) is also on every car. It means the Countryman provides outstanding agility and driving fun on any terrain. A Sport Button is also fitted, sharpening the engine’s responses, retuning the exhaust note and adjusting the steering’s power assistance. MINIMALISM technology – including Brake Energy Regeneration, Shift Point Display and Auto Start/Stop for models with a manual gearbox – means maximum efficiency. The result is fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures of 39.2mpg and 167g/km respectively (35.3mpg and 187g/km on the auto). A drive to Cawthorne, South Yorkshire with Greg Stainton
Cawthorne is a rural parish in South Yorkshire, three miles to the west of Barnsley, which is the local district council. Our trip, in the new model 3 Series on a glorious cold but sunny March day provided some wonderful scenery and some country smells! This was my first opportunity to drive the new BMW 3 Series since its launch in February. I have been lucky enough to run a previous 318d Performance Edition model for the last six months (this was a 318d ES with the full M Sport Body Kit and Sports Seats. It was badged with London 2012 emblems as a Special Edition) so I was keen to find out how much better the new model is. Don't get me wrong the 'old' model still ticks all the boxes but the BMW engineers have to keep making strides forward to keep BMW at the forefront. The question is, have they managed to do this? Let's start with the key. Keyless start - no need to insert the key into the car? This isn't brand new, introduced in the latest BMW 5 Series but it is my first experience of this new technology. So what do you do with the key? It felt strange to start off with, but I quickly found that keeping the key in my pocket worked for me, then simply press the button to unlock the doors. All you need to do then is put your foot on the brake (automatic) or clutch (manual) and press the start button. With the option of comfort access you don't even have to use the key to unlock the doors, just walk up with the key in your pocket and the car knows to unlock when you get close. It also locks when you walk away. Another advantage with comfort access is the ability to open the boot without touching the key or pressing the boot release. If you walk up with both hands full of shopping all you need to do is move your foot under a sensor at the back of the car and hey presto! The boot opens. Such a simple idea, but then it's the simple ones that can be the most useful. OK, so now we know how to unlock the car, upon opening the door I noticed that it feels lighter, quite a lot lighter. That will be the clever use of lightweight materials which retains all the
strength. When closing the door with the wonderfully sculptured door handle I couldn't help but notice the quality, the back felt smooth but with a soft quality rubber feel and the front, a smooth metallic feel. My goodness, should a door handle feel this good? I haven't started the car yet, so much to talk about and so different to the previous model. BMW certainly have upped the game of quality inside and out. They have designed some wonderful detailed lines that give the car a real sense of quality. The dial and new iDrive controller are all very easy on the eye and as always very functional. The iDrive can be programmed in a number of ways and each driver can save their preferred profiles for the next time they use the car, that is, if you let anyone else use it. Very clever! This particular flavour of 3 Series was the 328i which is powered by a four cylinder TwinPower turbo producing 245bhp and 44mpg on the combined cycle. It's truly astonishing that a car that can sprint from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds can be so frugal, so much so, I decided to put it to the test by monitoring the mpg throughout the journey, but more about that later. Fuel economy on hold for a second, I'd like to briefly discuss the other side of the 328i's charms, its pace. You can extract what seems like every horsepower from a ridiculously low amount of revs. With pretty much no lag you plough through the rev band with ease, whilst looking in amazement as the speedometer needle escapes to the other side of the dial. The accompanying soundtrack is quiet enough as to not distract or annoy you but just the right level as to remind you that this engine is one that can pack a punch. With the engine set in Sport mode and a mixture of motorway and country road driving the 328i on its first outing achieved 41mpg. Considering the tank was full and there was a lot of uturns (I didn't setup the sat nav) and traffic along the way the result is nothing less than remarkable. The drive up to Cawthorne was noticeably better than in the previous 3 Series that I had got used to, the car has evolved, everything feels slightly better, the suspension with its
'Comfort' and 'Sport' setting was great to play with. I preferred the Sport mode as I have become more used to a firmer ride. Driving through Cawthorne our first port of call was Cannon Hall Farm, a very popular working farm which must be one of the best farm attractions in the country. There are animals in abundance and always something new and exciting around the next corner. At the farm they are expecting around 750 lambs this year and various baby animals are born every week. They keep several breeds of cattle including Highland cattle with their huge horns and shaggy coats along with all sorts of other animals including New Shetland Foals, Llamas, Rex Rabbits and rare Kunekune Pigs from New Zealand. As I am definitely a 'City Boy' I need to warn those of you who have a sensitive nose that this is a working farm, and with that comes the 'countryside smell'. You have been warned! Children can have a blast in the climbing forest, an innovative new tube maze and pyramid towers that add another dimension to their already impressive playground areas. They also have a Tea Room so you can easily spend a full morning or afternoon here. Admission prices are £4.95 for adults and children and £3.95 for senior citizens. Children under 3 go free and car parking is £3.00 including a voucher worth £3 that can be redeemed in the Tea Room when you spend £10 or more. A stone's throw from Cannon Hall Farm is Cannon Hall itself. A country house museum set in 70 acres of beautiful historic parkland. For almost 300 years Cannon Hall was home to the Spencer-Stanhope family who made their fortune in the local iron industry.
In the 1790's the architect John Carr of York enlarged the hall and redesigned the interior. In 1957 the Hall opened as a museum, and is home to a collection of art including ceramics, glass, furniture and Old Master paintings, displayed in the Hall's Georgian and Victorian rooms. Highlights include Mrs Tuder by John Constable, Wheelback Chairs by George Hepplewhite and stunning ceramics by William de Morgan and Moorcroft. The Hall also houses 'Charge', the Regimental Museum of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) and the Light Dragoons which is a must for anyone interested in military history. Refurbished with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, it illustrates the part played by the Regiment in many major battles such as the Charge of the Light Brigade and includes memorabilia dedicated to Lord Baden Powell.

The Munich based global brand is launching its new BMW Athletics Collection for ambitious amateur athletes. BMW Athletics features running shoes, performance clothing and accessories. The new range will join the ranks of BMW’s other collections: Golfsport, Yachtsport and Motorsport. The running shoes by BMW Athletics are designed for any kind of wear. They provide optimal comfort and support whether you’re working out in the gym or running in one of the many city races sponsored by BMW. Their features include breathable sandwich mesh, duoCell shock absorbers and comfortlast technology for a perfect fit. The collection also includes retro lifestyle sneakers, which convey a love of sport away from the training ground too. PUMA and OGIO – high-performance partners for BMW Athletics. BMW Athletics’ sport shoes were created in partnership with PUMA. The same goes for the performance clothing, which includes shirts, hoodies, jackets and trousers that wearers can combine and team with fashionable accessories to reflect their individual style. The ladies V-neck T-shirt in berry paired with a cap in the same colour is just one of the many outfits that can’t fail to impress. Every item in the collection also features silver reflectors to provide greater safety when training at dusk.

When the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé launches in the UK on 2 June 2012, people will be amazed. Not just because it is a thing of beauty but because the first ever four door BMW coupé successfully blends the elegance and driving dynamics of the new 6 Series Coupé with a superior level of standard specification and a host of optional class leading driver assistance technologies. Inherent sportiness From the first glimpse, there is no denying the car’s sporting performance with its wide, athletic stance; low, prominent kidney grille, LED foglights and its 18” alloy wheels as standard (19” for 650i models). What’s more it delivers BMW’s trademark exhilarating driving dynamics thanks to a responsive and agile chassis, and signature BMW rear wheel drive with near perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Power and performance From launch two enviable 640i and 640d engines will be available, in both SE and M Sport variants. All models feature a host of EfficientDynamics technologies as standard, including an eight speed Sport automatic transmission and Auto Start-Stop, ensuring both power and efficiency. To put this into perspective, the 640d delivers 313hp and 630Nm torque, yet still achieves 50.4mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of just 148g/km. From July 2012 a brand new 650i engine will be available, taking the new Gran Coupé into performance car territory and delivering 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds.
Luxurious interior Inside, the lavishly-appointed and spacious cabin is totally orientated around the driver, with the sweeping dashboard angled towards the driver. The standard specification has been carefully matched to customers’ needs with desirable features, including Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth telephone preparation, Xenon headlights, 18” alloy wheels (19” for 650i models) and Professional Multimedia Navigation with high-resolution 10.2” display screen.
