Biden was obviously the main focus of the swearingin but it was Harris’ swearing-in which held more symbolic weight than any other US Vice President. Placing her hand on two well-worn Bibles during the swearing-in, she opted to address the nation in front of the Lincoln Memorial, a symbolic effort at reconciliation after four extremely divided years under Donald Trump that culminated in a predominately white mob storming the US Capitol. “Tomorrow she breaks the glass ceiling - and the country will never be the same again. We will always have her back. That is a huge historical moment that should also be uplifted,” said her ally and Mayor of Long Beach, California, Robert Garcia, a day before she was to be sworn in. “Black women in politics are no longer a ‘first’. lawmakers say Joe Trump impeachment: Republicans Indian-American Biden, Kamala Harris will heal America seek delay until February
HiIndia Newsdesk Republicans in the US Senate are asking Democrats to delay the start of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial until February. They argue this will give Mr Trump time to prepare a defence. He is accused of inciting insurrection after
supporters of his stormed the Capitol this month. House of Representatives' Democrats are ready to hand the charge to the Senate. Mr Trump flew to Florida as his term ended on Wednesday, skipping his successor Joe Biden's inauguration. On 6 January, the then president told protesters near the White House to "peacefully and patriotically" make their voices heard as they prepared to march towards the US Capitol building. He also told them to "fight like hell". The demonstration turned ugly as a mob forced its way into the congressional complex where lawmakers were certifying Mr Biden's election HiIndia Newsdesk victory. Covid-19 has spiraled out of control for months in the United States even with a massive vaccination campaign underway. The US death toll has exceeded 400,000. Kamala Harris speaks to Uneasy relief in Washington WHO chief Ghebreyesus after Inauguration Day over phone
HiIndia Newsdesk US Vice President Kamala Harris has spoken to World Health Organization (WHO) DirectorGeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus over phone to discuss the decision by the Biden administration to rejoin the UN health agency. In one of the first acts following his inauguration, President Joe Biden reversed a key foreign policy decision his predecessor Donald Trump took last year after accusing the WHO of incompetence and bowing to Chinese pressure over the coronavirus pandemic. During the call, Harris emphasised that she and Biden believe that the WHO is vital to controlling the spread of COVID-19 and building back better global health and pandemic preparedness, according to a readout of the call issued by the White House. In addition, she emphasised on the importance of making the US safer through global cooperation, the White House said.
HiIndia Newsdesk Quite a difference between two chilly Wednesdays in January: Under a crystalline Inauguration Day sky and a bunting-draped Capitol, the Marine Band welcomed the 46th President into office with a procession of fanfares — in the same spot that a mob answering the call of the 45th had ransacked the building two weeks earlier to try to stop this transfer of power There was no mention of Donald J. Trump, the departed and deplatformed commander in chief who flew out of town early in the morning as the first President in 152 years to refuse to attend the swearing-in of his successor. Whether or not related to the former President’s absence, a bipartisan lightness seemed to prevail across the stage. Snow flurries gave way to sun and an aura distinctly serene. Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, and now former Vice- President Mike Pence — both close allies of Trump who broke bitterly with him in his final days — were seen cracking grins, even chuckling with their counterparts in the opposing party.
Biden moves swiftly to combat Covid
HiIndia Newsdesk US President Joe Biden moved swiftly on his first full day in the White House on Thursday to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, his top priority as he turns the page on four years of Donald Trump’s tumultuous leadership. The Biden administration is aiming at a coordinated federal coronavirus response to the 10-month pandemic, focused on boosting vaccines, increasing testing, reopening schools and addressing inequalities thrown up by the disease. Trump, who frequently sought to play down the severity of the virus which has killed more than 405,000 Americans, left much of the pandemic planning to individual states, which has resulted in a patchwork of policies across the country..

"Government Silence Deafening": Sonia Gandhi On TV Anchor WhatsApp Chats
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: The government's silence over the leaked WhatsApp chats of TV anchor Arnab Goswami on the Balakot strikes is "deafening", Congress president Sonia Gandhi said today, alleging that national security had been "thoroughly compromised". In her opening remarks at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Sonia Gandhi also took on the government over the farmer protests, alleging "shocking insensitivity and arrogance" and what she called a charade of consultations between the centre and protesters. "Very recently there have been very disturbing reports on how national security has been so thoroughly compromised. I think just a few days back, Antony-ji (former Defence Minister AK Antony) had said that leaking of official secrets of military operations is treason.
India Starts Commercial Covid Vaccine Exports
HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: Urging the country's youth to draw inspiration from Team India's historic test cricket victory at Australia's Gabba, clinched with less experienced players, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India must fight back challenges with the same spirit. In a virtual address to the outgoing students of the Tezpur University, PM Modi drew parallels between the country's performance during the coronavirus pandemic and India's 2-1 series win, adding "our action-reaction instinct has changed". Soon after the historic win, the Prime Minister has tweeted a congratulatory message appreciating the team's "remarkable energy, passion and grit". "In the beginning of the pandemic, people were apprehensive about what will happen, but the country showed resilience. We fought Covid with Made in India solutions," he said talking about India's home-grown vaccines that have the potential to "stop the pandemic".

Six Days Into COVID-19 Vaccination Drive, India Crosses Million Mark HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Almost a week since it started the "world's largest" vaccination exercise with its homegrown inoculants, India crossed a major milestone on Friday -of administering jabs to at least 10.5 lakh, more than a million, beneficiaries, the health ministry has said. The number of people who have received a jab of the two-dose vaccine in India since January 16 is "more than many other countries", the Health Ministry said in a statement amid government's increased push to spread information on their safety. On the testing front too, India continues to register growing numbers... cumulative testing has crossed 19 crore. ‘Well-tolerated, no serious adverse events’ — Lancet publishes Covaxin’s phase 1 trial data A preprint of the results were released last month, which revealed that all three vaccine formulations in the trial resulted in ‘robust immune responses’. HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The results of the phase 1 trials of the indigenous Covid-19 vaccine,
Covaxin, was published in prominent medical journal The Lancet Thursday. A preprint of the paper, released last month, had indicated that all three vaccine formulations or dosages had resulted in “robust immune responses comparable to a panel of convalescent serum” in the 375 volunteers across 11 hospitals. According to The Lancet, “The vaccine was well tolerated in all dose groups with no vaccine-related serious adverse events,”.
It added: “The most common adverse event was pain at the injection site, followed by headache, fatigue, and fever.” Covaxin has been developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research. The vaccine received emergency use authorisation earlier this month, despite incomplete phase 3 trial data, which had sparked a controversy.
Farm talks hit roadblock as Health Worker Who Got Vaccine Last Week Dies, Autopsy Awaited Centre toughens stand
HiIndia Newsdesk The government’s negotiations with protesting farm unions hit a roadblock on Friday as the farmer leaders stuck to their demands for a complete repeal of three farm laws they find pro-corporate and a legal guarantee for MSP, even as the Centre asked them to reconsider its proposal for putting the Acts on hold for 12-18 months. Unlike the last 10 rounds of talks, the 11th round could not even reach a decision on the next date for the meeting as the government also hardened its position saying it is ready to meet again once the unions agree to discuss the suspension proposal. This followed a big climbdown made by the Centre during the last round when they offered to suspend the laws and form a joint committee to find solutions.

She did not have any reaction to the vaccine on the day it was administered, they said. “Only after the post-mortem report comes, the cause of Rajwanti’s death will be known. New Elected Congress President In June, Decision After Row At Meeting New Delhi: A new Congress president will be elected in June after five state elections, it was decided at a party meeting today after an argument between two groups, during which Rahul Gandhi reportedly said: “Once and for all, finish it and move on.” The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has decided that there will be a new elected Congress president in June 2021, KC Venugopal told reporters after a meeting of the party’s top decision-making body. At the CWC meeting, senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and P Chidambaram reportedly asked for immediate organisational polls. They are among the Congress leaders who
have raised uncomfortable questions over the party’s leadership and management in recent months after multiple election defeats. Ranged against them were the so-called
Gandhi loyalists -- Ashok Gehlot, Amarinder Singh, AK Antony, Tariq Anwar and Oommen Chandy, who said the Congress president’s election should be held after polls in five states including Bengal and Tamil Nadu. One leader commented: “Whose agenda are we working towards? The BJP doesn’t talk about internal elections like our party? The first priority is to fight the state elections then organisational elections.” Finally, the second group prevailed. The dates for the election of a Congress president and the CWC will be announced shortly and Sonia Gandhi will take the final decision, leaders said.

Don’t Let “Ego” Come In Way: Uma Bharti’s Advice Over Farmers’ Protest Bhopal: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti today said t he C ent re and protesting farmers should ensure that stubbornness and ego do not come in the way of resolving differences over the new agri-marketing laws. The former Union minister said it is after a gap of more than 30 years that farmers have gathered near Delhi to push for their demands. It is an opportunity for both the government and farmers. Stubbornness and ego from both sides should not come in the way (of finding a solution to impasse over new laws), she told reporters at her bungalow in Bhopal. Her comments came after journalists sought her views on the nearly two-month-long protest by farmers on Delhi borders. Multiple rounds of talks have failed to break the deadlock on the three new farm laws enacted by the Centre in September. The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister said farmers came together under the leadership of farm leaders Mahendra Singh Tikait and Sharad Joshi around 30 years ago.

Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday asked who had leaked “top secret” information about the Balakot air strike to Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami, underlining that this was a “criminal act” that had put Indian Air Force pilots conducting the raid inside Pakistan at risk. “This was top secret information. This was not provided to anybody else. There were four or five people who knew this,” the Congress leader said at a news conference in New Delhi, listing the Prime Minister, the defence minister, the home minister, the air chief and the national security adviser as those who would know about such an operation. “I want to know whether it was the Prime Minister of India who told Arnab Goswami. Or it was the defence minister or the home minister. Or it was the NSA. I want to know which one of those people told this man,” Rahul said.
Fortress Washington awaits Joe Biden
HiIndia Newsdesk Central Washington is an armed fortress, fenced off with razor wire and surrounded by 25,000 National Guard troops ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, a stark contrast to previous
inaugurations, when the US capital erupted in days of celebration. The Covid-19 pandemic had already cancelled the inaugural balls. Now the National Mall is closed to the public due to threats of violence from groups who attacked the US Capitol on January 6. Almost none of the public will witness firsthand the transition of power, souring the mood of Washingtonians. “It’s like a ghost town but with soldiers,” said Dana O’Connor, who walked with her husband past concrete barriers near the White House on Sunday.“It’s eerie. It feels super unnatural.” Presidential inaugurations are normally high-security events, with metal detectors at key entry points, restricted ID-only zones and National Guard supplementing local and federal law enforcement. But the level of precautions this year is unprecedented.

Kamala Harris breaks the glass ceiling
HiIndia Newsdesk The American polity had never witnessed the sight of a woman taking oath as the Vice President, much less a coloured woman. Kamala Harris, the new Vice President of the US, registered another first in keeping with her values when she was sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice. They are a force,” posted Martha Jones, Professor at Johns Hopkins University and the author of “Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All’’.

Ministers to consider £500 Covid payment to boost self-isolation rates Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 in England could be paid £500 to self-isolate under proposals to be discussed by ministers.
It is among the suggestions listed in a leaked document from the Department of Health (DoH) to encourage people with symptoms to get tested and stay home. There are fears the current financial support is not working because low paid workers cannot afford to self-isolate. The BBC has confirmed the gover nment is lo ok ing at overhauling the system. However, sources at the Treasury say a universal payment of £500 is
unlikely to happen. ntroducing a universal £500 payment could cost up to £453m per week - 12 times the cost of the current payouts. BBC Newsnight's Katie Razzall says ministers are aware selfisolation is crucial for stopping the spread of coronavirus and the "options paper" has been drawn up by civil servants at the DoH. She said it would be discussed soon by the Covid operations committee chaired by Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove adding the move suggested there was an admission in government that too many people were not staying at home and a decision needed to be made quickly.

Japanese car maker Nissan has told the BBC its Sunderland plant is secure for the long term as a result of the trade deal reached between the UK and the EU. It said it will move additional battery production close to the plant where it has 6,000 direct employees and supports nearly 70,000 jobs in the supply chain. Currently, the batteries in its Leaf electric cars are imported from Japan. Nissan would not confirm if this would mean additional jobs at Sunderland, which is the UK's largest car plant. Manufacturing the more powerful batteries in the UK will ensure its cars comply with trade rules agreed with the EU requiring at least 55% of the car's value to be derived from either the UK or the EU to qualify for zero tariffs when exported to the EU. Some 70% of the cars made in Sunderland are exported and the vast majority of them are sold in the EU. Nissan had issued stark warnings last year that if the UK left the EU without a trade deal, the resulting tariffs on cars and components would make the Sunderland plant "unsustainable". Nissan's chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta told the BBC: "The Brexit deal is positive for Nissan. Being the largest automaker in the UK we are taking this opportunity to redefine auto-making in the UK. It has created a competitive environment for Sunderland, not just inside the UK but outside as well. "We've decided to localise the manufacture of the 62kWh battery in Sunderland so that all our products qualify [for tariff-free export to the EU]. We are committed to Sunderland for the long term under the business conditions that have been agreed." It came as Nissan paused one of its two production lines in Sunderland on Friday as disruption at ports caused by the pandemic affected its supply chain.

Bond film No Time To Die UK suffers deadliest day, some hospitals ‘like a war zone’ delayed for third time HiIndia Newsdesk No Time To Die had already been pushed back twice, and will now debut globally on 8 October, an announcement on the film's website said. It had originally been due to hit screens in April 2020. T he f i l m is t he 2 5 t h instalment in the Bond franchise, and marks Daniel Craig's final appearance as British secret service agent 007. It also features Lea Seydoux and Rami Malek. The delay will come as a further blow to cinemas that have been forced to shut for months at a time because of lockdowns. bEarlier this week, leading film-makers including Danny Boyle and Sir Steve McQueen wrote to the UK government, calling for financial support for cinema chains because "UK cinema stands on the edge of an abyss". Cineworld said in October, when No Time To Die was pushed back for the second time, that delays to big budget releases meant the industry was "unviable". Bond's latest move sparked a flurry of other delays to major releases. Sony has pushed back Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Peter Rabbit 2, Jared Leto's Morbius, Tom Holland's Uncharted, and Cinderella, which will star singer Camila Cabello; while Universal has moved Tom Hanks' Bios from April to November.
HiIndia Newsdesk The UK suffered its worst day in the pandemic on Wednesday, with more than 1,800 deaths recorded in 24 hours, as Boris Johnson’s chief scientific adviser warned some hospitals now look “like a war zone.” The record daily toll takes the total number of people who have died within 28 days of a positive test in the U.K. to 93,290. Almost 40,000 patients are now receiving treatment in U.K. hospitals. England is in its third national lockdown and similar measures are in place across the U.K., but while the restrictions have started to bring infection rates down, officials say the death rates and pressures on the National Health Service will continue to grow. Vallance also said some restrictions may be needed next winter — including wearing masks, especially indoors.

Dear Fellow Citizens,
I
t is in the spirit of celebrating Asian-Indian culture and its influence in the mainstream community that the Village of Hoffman Estates congratulates and honors the Federal Indian Association during India’s 72nd Republic Day celebration. India’s Republic Day commemorates the historic events that began in 1947 when India gained her independence from British rule and, in 1950, formally established the Republic’s constitution. India’s Republic Day also offers a wonderful opportunity for Indian Americans in the northwest suburbs of Chicago to rejoice and celebrate their rich heritage. Thank you for providing all of us the opportunity to celebrate and embrace Indian culture and learn more about its history and traditions. We are honored to join with you in reflecting on the great sacrifices that were made during the struggle for India’s independence and offer our best wishes for a memorable commemoration of India’s 72nd Republic Day. Mayor William D. McLeod Hoffman Estates
Dear Fellow Indian Americans:
I
t gives me a great pleasure to join the legion of distinguished Indian American community figures in articulating a brief commemorative message as we celebrate India’s Republic Day – a message that exalts India and its enduring democratic ideals -- with my profound veneration for India and the United States of America. On this 72nd India’s Republic Day, we shall pause to honor the golden moments in the history of India when India attained a new freedom from colonial rule and that which culminated in a sovereign democratic Republic of India with the constitution to guide its destiny. India is truly a breathtaking idea that is indelibly enshrined in our lives. On this day, it silently evokes and rekindles the patriotic spirit of Indianness in me as we celebrate India’s Republic and its triumphant journey of over seven decades. On this Republic Day, let us take a moment to salute the vanguard of freedom fighters who have accorded the Indian Independence which subsequently gave birth to the majestic Republic of India on this day 72 years ago.As India continues its triumphant march, I am conscious of the beautiful story of India evolved through challenges, struggles and sacrifices and today India is a shining story of great triumph. Like the United States of America, India is a great majestic nation on the face of the earth and these two great countries are intertwined together profoundly consecrated forever to the Democratic principles. After its triumphant journey of 72 years, India should not be defined just by its growing global eminence alone; instead, it should also be defined by its vastly bustling intellectual capital, its culture, its ethos and its enduring philosophy. Jai Hind & Long Live USA Keerthi Kumar Ravoori President Indian American Business Council
“Where the mind is without fear and the head id held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action--Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake”. -- Rabindranath Tagore
P
M Modi is leading Mother India as Global Guru as India is getting ready to celebrate 72nd Republic day on 26th January. On this day, to commemorate the history of our nation, Republic Day is celebrated every year with ceremonial parades at Rajpath in New Delhi, as well as celebrations across the country. This day marks when the Constitution of India came into effect. It was the day when our country became a secular, democratic republic. Independence day is when India became free from British Rule on 15 Aug 1947. Today’s India can play a larger role on the world stage, as it restores its economic momentum and liberal credentials. Even before the coronavirus pandemic swept through the country, India was at a crossroads. It has sustained economic expansion, accelerated by path breaking reforms in 2020 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, the aspirations of international leadership that India has harbored since independence has become a hope for sustaining peaceful democracy. At a time when China’s actions have left many countries thirsting for alternative arrangements, India could again become the world’s fastest-growing free market democracy. As one of the largest democracies, India is executing a new approach to revive its hopes of developing a safer world by bringing the league of great powers together. Jitendra Diganvker

Indian Americans in Chicago/Naperville are All Set to Celebrate India’s 72nd Republic Day with Gaiety and Fervor
T
he Indian-Americans in Chicago/Naperville are all set to celebrate India’s 72nd Republic Day on January 26th with fervor considering the special significance that this day holds. India has made phenomenal strides in the 74 years since independence to not only become one of the fastest growing economies in the world but also through spectacular achievements in terms of all parameters of multifaceted development. While a number of other countries which got independence around the same time as India did, their socio-economic and educational achievements leave much to be desired. However, India’s growth trajectory continues unabated. India has become a source of inspiration for different countries across the globe and is all set to become one of the global super powers. The world leaders in the past had an apprehension and doubt about the survival of India as a nation on account of its huge diversity in terms of religions, languages, cultures, etc. However, India, with its impressive and consistent growth, has proved all of them wrong. The Constitution of India, which, among other things, establishes structures, powers, processes, and duties of different institutions, provides a strong foundation for the emergence of a resilient and vibrant India. The Republic Day celebrations is an opportunity to reflect on the foundations of the Indian Republic that are based on the ideals of justice, pluralism and democracy. Indians across the globe should promote the objectives stated by the Preamble to secure justice, liberty, equality to all citizens and promote fraternity to maintain unity and integrity of the nation so that the great nation of our birth, India may continue to flourish, prosper and lead in the years to come. “Constitution is the Strength behind India’s Impressive Growth Trajectory” -Ashfaq Syed Naperville, IL

IT IS VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA DEVI HARRIS NOW By Mayank Chhaya, Special to Hi India
B
arely four years after she first became a United States Senator, Kamala Devi Harris has now risen to be the first ever woman and that too of a mixed Indian Tamil and Jamaican heritages to become the country’s vice president. In her spectacular rise she resembles a similar trajectory of Barack Obama who went on from being a US Senator to President in a little over three years. Although she failed to win her Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 2020, a confluence of socio-cultural circumstances ensured that she was chosen by former Vice President Joe Biden to be his running mate. Helped in no small measure by a relentlessly toxic and destructive President Donald Trump the Biden-Harris combine is for now firmly ensconced in Washington. Four years of assault on every aspect of America’s society and its democratic institutions created a groundswell that handed the Biden-Harris ticket an astonishing 81,283,098 votes, or 51.3 percent of the votes cast. Biden is the first U.S. presidential candidate to have won more than 80 million votes which is where the presence of Kamala Harris played a significant role in bringing out a huge number of non-white votes to decisively give the mandate to them. Harris’s consequential life began in 1990, when joined the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Her mandate was to prosecute child sexual assault cases. It is an illustration of rise through the ranks that she served as a managing attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and also as chief of the Division on Children and Families for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. In 2002, there was already a buzz in the Bay Area about the emergence of this new face San Francisco’s legal and political firmament. Sure enough, in 2003 Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco. It was apparent to anyone who cared to see
that she was building up a substantive profile by doing things like creating, what her official biography calls “a ground-breaking program to provide first-time drug offenders with the opportunity to earn a high school degree and find employment. The program was designated as a national model of innovation for law enforcement by the United States Department of Justice.” Seven years later she became the state’s Attorney General giving her the impressive perch of presiding over the country’s largest state justice department. As her biography explains, “She established the state’s first Bureau of Children’s Justice and instituted several first-of-their-kind reforms that ensured greater transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system.” Harris distinguished herself in that top law enforcement position by winning a $20 billion settlement for Californians whose homes had been foreclosed on. Add to that a $1.1 billion settlement for students and veterans who were taken advantage of by a for-profit education company and her reputation as fierce fighter for ordinary Americans was cemented. To expand her brief, she went on to defend the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare in court, enforced environmental law, and was a national leader in the movement for marriage equality, as pointed out by her biography. There are sections within the Indian American community that have not just antipathy but even contempt towards Vice President Harris. Ironically, many of these voices are strongly aligned with the Hindu right and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even as someone at its helm, namely Prime Minister Modi, has taken a pragmatic and even an enthusiastic approach toward her. It was becoming clear by 2015 that Harris was perhaps destined for a much bigger national platform. In keeping with that in 2017 she was elected a US Senator, a job in which she emerged as a tough, non-sense figure who subjected much of the Trump administration policies to a sharp scrutiny and its top officials to some unsettling and searching
inquiry. Throughout her three years or so in the Senate Harris kept broadening her interests to cover issues immigrants, refugees and DREAMers or immigrant youths who qualify for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. Her official biography highlights some of other works thus: “On the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, she worked with members of both parties to keep the American people safe from foreign threats and crafted bipartisan legislation to assist in securing American elections. She visited Iraq, Jordan, and Afghanistan to meet with servicemembers and assess the situation on the ground. She also served on the Senate Judiciary Committee. During her tenure on the committee, she participated in hearings for two Supreme Court nominees. As Senator, Vice President Harris championed legislation to reform cash bail, combat hunger, provide rent relief, improve maternal health care, and address the climate crisis as a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Her bipartisan anti-lynching bill passed the Senate in 2018. Her legislation to preserve Historically Black Colleges and Universities was signed into law, as was her effort to infuse much-needed capital into low-income communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.” With that as the backdrop and Biden enlisting the now House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, the South Carolina Democrat as his chief outreach to the decisive African American vote, Harris’s profile became compelling as the running mate. Former President George W Bush told Congressman Clyburn “you know, you’re the savior, because if you had not nominated Joe Biden, we would not be having this transfer of power today.” Clyburn said Bush added that Biden was the only Democratic candidate who could have defeated President Trump. In that dynamic, Kamala Harris had every strength that Joe Biden was looking for at the time and notwithstanding their rough exchange during one of the Democratic presidential
debates where the former seemed to chide the latter over issues of racial justice the two eventually joined hands to create history. Harris accepted Biden’s invitation to be his nominee on August 11, 2020 and in a little over five months erased unpleasant memories of her having to drop out of the Democratic primaries for not garnering enough support to become its nominee. In a choice fraught with symbolism Harris chose Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, herself a trailblazing professional of Latin American origin, to administer her the oath of office on January 20, a crisp but somewhat wind-stirred winter morning in Washington. The 56-year-old former senator from California broke the glass ceiling that has kept women from rising to the country’s two highest offices of president and vice president. Congratulating Vice President Kamala Devi Harris India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet and I quote “It is a historic occasion. Looking forward to interacting with her to make India-USA relations more robust. The IndiaUSA partnership is beneficial for our planet.” Barely two weeks after the heart of America’s democracy, the Capitol Hill, came under a violent and shameful attack from hordes of angry misinformed mobs, the country retrieved some of its honor. President Joseph R Biden Jr. who was sworn in immediately after her used the occasion to make a firm but soothing speech to America that is dangerously divided and fractious in the aftermath of the presidential election which voted out President Trump. On day one, as promised, President Biden signed a flurry of 17 executive orders through which he moved aggressively to dismantle a significant portion of Trump’s often regressive policies. He unveiled a mammoth $1.9 trillion rescue package, released a 21-page national

Joe Biden THE PRESIDENT From Scranton to Wilmington to the White House — with thousands of train rides in between
FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2021

“America is an idea. An idea that is stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant. It gives hope to the most desperate people on earth, it guarantees that everyone is treated with dignity and gives hate no safe harbor. It instills in every person in this country the belief that no matter where you start in life, there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you work at it. That’s what we believe.” JOE BIDEN, APRIL 25, 2019
A
t age 29, President Biden became one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate. Just weeks after his Senate election, tragedy struck the Biden family when his wife Neilia and daughter Naomi were killed, and sons Hunter and Beau were critically injured, in an auto accident. Biden was sworn into the U.S. Senate at his sons’ hospital bedsides and began commuting from Wilmington to Washington every day, first by car, and then by train, in order to be with his family. He would continue to do so throughout his time in the Senate. Biden married Jill Jacobs in 1977, and in 1980, their family was complete with the birth of Ashley Blazer Biden. A lifelong educator, Jill earned her doctorate in education and returned to teaching as an English professor at a community college in Virginia. Beau Biden, Attorney General of Delaware and Joe Biden’s eldest son, passed away in 2015 after battling brain cancer with the same integrity, courage, and strength he demonstrated every day of his life.
strategy to combat the coronavirus, returned America to the World Health Organization, extended a federal moratorium on evictions and asked agencies to prolong a moratorium on foreclosures on federally guaranteed mortgages, returned America to the Paris climate accord and undo some of the harshest immigration policies of his predecessor. An important part of that dismantling was the preservation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA program, which has shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. Vice President Harris is intrinsic to the highly ambitious agenda that President Biden has set for himself. From all available indications it is clear that she will not be a ceremonial appendage to the president but truly consequential partner as he goes about delivering on his promises. In that context the fact that Harris’s will be the tie-breaking vote in the 100-member Senate divided evenly between the Democrats and the Republicans gives her an even greater profile as vice president. Legislation is going to be a crucial part of the new president’s job and within that the vice president as chair of the Senate will be a powerful tool for him. The
Democrats already have the control of the House of Representatives where Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be able to drive all of the Biden agenda without much difficulty even though her party has a thinner majority this time around. Tie breaking votes are quite common in the Senate but in Harris’s case they afford her perhaps an unprecedented opportunity to shape America’s long-term future. Her predecessor, former Vice President Mike Pence, broke 13 ties, many of which to clear Trump’s Cabinet picks. For Harris, the tie-breaking vote could mean, apart from pushing Cabinet picks, helping move big ticket items such as coronavirus-relief bills, and electoral reforms. While President Biden, at 78 which makes him the oldest first term president, generally remains fit, the 22 years that separate him from Harris works to her advantage when it comes to doing not just heavy legislative lifting but even some substantive foreign policy and domestic policy lifting as well. It is in this context that her diverse experience both in the senate and before that in California will come in handy. From India’s perspective and that of the Indian American community
Beau’s fight with cancer inspires the mission of President Biden’s life — ending cancer as we know it. A LEADER IN THE SENATE As a Senator from Delaware for 36 years, President Biden established himself as a leader in facing some of our nation’s most important domestic and international challenges. As Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 16 years, Biden is widely recognized for his work writing and spearheading the Violence Against Women Act — the landmark legislation that strengthens penalties for violence against women, creates unprecedented resources for survivors of assault, and changes the national dialogue on domestic and sexual assault. As Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years, Biden played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. He was at the forefront of issues and legislation related to terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, post-Cold War Europe, the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and ending apartheid.
her success, while a source of joy and pride, comes somewhat calibrated given her and her party’s views on human rights, particularly in the context of Kashmir. For instance, On August 5, 2019, Prime Minister Modi’s government revoked Article 370 that gave the state of Jammu and Kashmir a special protected status. The revocation upended decades of status quo on the country’s most troublesome, turbulent and violent part. Just a month late Harris was asked about that and she said, “We are all watching”. She has been known to hold a strong opinion on Kashmir even though her exposure to the highly complex issue is limited and remote at best. Another troubling feature from her recent past as far as relations with India go is the strong stand Harris took on the abortive meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and a Congressional delegation when he visited Washington in December, 2019. Jaishankar canceled the meeting because the delegation included Representative Pramila Jayapal who had introduced a resolution in Congress calling on India to end restrictions imposed on Kashmir in the wake of the abrogation of Article
370. Jaishankar did not want to meet if Jayapal was part of the delegation, a decision that Harris had strongly criticized. There are these angularities that the vice president bring when it comes to India-US relations. However, as Prime Minister Modi pointed out in his tweet his government is looking forward to working with Harris “to make India-USA relations more robust.” While there are sections within the Indian American community that have not just antipathy but even contempt towards Vice President Harris. Ironically, many of these voices are strongly aligned with the Hindu right and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even as someone at its helm, namely Prime Minister Modi, has taken a pragmatic and even an enthusiastic approach toward her. Perhaps there is a realization on Modi’s part that Kamala Harris now has a shot at the presidency in 2024 should Biden opt-out on grounds of age. It added, “The undertaking and the discrepancies in the distribution of the vaccine sounds very suspicious and the resident doctors are very guarded in getting vaccinated.

‘This Border-Gavaskar Test series will be talked about for generations to come’: CA’s open letter to BCCI
HiIndia Newsdesk A day after all the euphoria, CA chairman Earl Eddings and interim CEO Nick Hockley penned an open letter to their Indian counterpart, BCCI, after the two teams completed a successful series amid difficult times due to the ongoing pandemic. “Australian cricket will forever be grateful to the BCCI for their friendship, trust, and commitment in helping to deliver a series that has brought joy to many millions of people around the world at a time they needed it most. The unique challenges of international touring during a global pandemic are considerable and we thank India’s players, coaches and support staff for all they have given,” CA wrote in its letter. “Over the past nine weeks, the Indian and Australian men’s teams completed outstanding One-Day International and Twenty20 International series, followed by one of the greatest Border-Gavaskar Test series ever contested. Despite the many public health and logistical challenges, the BCCI engaged with a spirit of cooperation befitting their status as one of international sport’s greatest ambassadors.” “From the sublime fast bowling of Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins, to the wonderful batting of Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith, to the exciting debuts of Shubman Gilland Cameron Green – and much, much more – the past two months of cricket have been absolutely enthralling. We will never forget the sacrifices made by our friends at the BCCI that made all this possible, CA added.
The Ultimate Warrior A
fter India lost an early wicket of Rohit Sharma in the 328-run chase on the Day 5 of the final Test at Gabba in Brisbane, Cheteshwar Pujara walked-in to push the Australian bowling attack on the backfoot with his 211-ball stay at the crease where he contributed 56 runs. In what is being called a historic run-chase by the pundits of the sport, India broke the 32-year-long unbeaten streak at the Gabba and Pujara remained as one of the toughest nuts to crack for the Aussie bowling unit.
Despite having one of the most formidable bowling attacks in the world with the likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, Australia couldn’t stop Pujara’s 205 and 211-ball stand respectively in the second innings of the third and fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Even after being hit multiple times on the helmet by the lethal bouncers from Pat Cummins, and suffering a severe blow on the thumb on Hazlewood’s delivery at 135 kmph in the 49th over of the chase, Pujara stood strong at the center
to put a 100 plus runs partnership with the opener Shubman Gill to put India in a strong position. In the post-match dressing room speech to Team India, Coach Ravi Shastri said, “Pujji you will be known as Ultimate Warrior.” Shastri also applauded on the role of debutants in the epic historic victory for India. Despite missing several key players in the side, captain Ajinkya Rahane’s team managed to retain the BorderGavaskar Trophy.

suicide on June 14 last year, his former partner Rhea Chakraborty was accused by the late star’s family of pushing him to death. What followed was a much-public investigation into Sushant’s death that involved the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), which arrested Rhea in September for allegedly procuring drugs for Sushant and paying for the same. Nearly a
month later, Rhea was granted bail by the Bombay High Court. Earlier in the day, jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali criticised a known media figure for “destroying” Rhea Chakraborty’s reputation through his coverage of Sushant’s death. To which author Shunali Khullar Shroff replied showing concern about Rhea, “She went to jail and has possibly lost any chance at a career in Bollywood.”
Concerned about religious divide created in the country
Naseeruddin Shah
Veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah says he is concerned over the divide being created in the country between Hindus and Muslims in the name of love jihad. The actor said -"I am really furious with the way divisions are being created, like the love jihad tamasha in UP. Firstly, the people who coined this phrase don’t know the meaning of the word jihad. I don’t think that anyone would be so stupid to actually believe that Muslims will overtake the Hindu population, it is unimaginable. For that, Muslims will have to have so many babies. So, this whole notion is unreal,”. Last year in November, Uttar Pradesh became the first state in India to pass an ordinance against forcible or "dishonest" religious conversions. In the last few months, states like Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have also revealed plans to enact laws to counter alleged attempts to convert Hindu women to Islam in the guise of marriage, which political leaders often refer to as “love jihad”.
The "Bandish Bandits" actor believes the term "love jihad" stems from the idea of stigmatising inter-faith marriages and stop social interactions between Hindus and Muslims. “They not only want to discourage inter-faith marriages but also curtail social interactions between Hindus and Muslims,” he added. Shah, who is married to theatre-film actor Ratna Pathak Shah, said he always believed that his marriage to a Hindu woman would set a "healthy precedent". “We have taught our children about every religion. But we have never told them that they belong to any particular religion. I always believed that these differences would slowly fade away. I believed that my marriage to a Hindu woman would set a healthy precedent. I don’t think this is wrong,” he said. The actor said when he was about to tie the knot with the Ratna Pathak Shah, his mother had asked if he would want his would-be wife to convert to his religion and his answer was no. Shah said even though his mother was uneducated and was brought up in an orthodox household, she was completely against the idea of changing one's religion.

Two months after the government brought video-streaming platforms under the ambit of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, its effect can be felt. On Sunday, the I&B Ministry summoned Amazon Prime Video India officials after BJP leader Ram Kadam wrote a letter to Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, alleging that Tandav "hurts Hindu religious sentiments". BJP leader Manoj Kotak expressed similar concerns as he stated in his letter to Javadekar that the makers "have mocked Hindu gods", and urged for a ban on the series. Both leaders cited the scene where Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub can be seen holding a Trishul and a damru while acting in a college play. Taking cognisance of the grievances, the top brass of Amazon India had a preliminary discussion with the I&B Ministry on Monday. A source from the show's creative team revealed, "The team offered to tender an apology, which appeared to satisfy the ministry for the time being. Soon after, the head honchos of the platform had another meeting with the key players of Amazon US, and drafted the official statement in consultation with them and creative stakeholders, including director Ali Abbas Zafar and producer Himanshu Sharma." Amitabh Bachchan to host reality show to promote Uttarakhand tourism
Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan will soon host a reality show to promote Uttarakhand tourism. A decision in this regard was taken by the Uttarakhand Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat late on Friday night. The show named 100 Days in Heaven, to be hosted by the veteran Bollywood actor, will be telecast on several TV news and entertainment channels, Cabinet Minister and state government spokesperson Madan Kaushik said. “The programme will be a sort of an ad campaign to promote Uttarakhand tourism made on the lines of the one the Bollywood actor has been doing for Gujarat,” he said. Film production company Messers Jumping Tomato Marketing Private Limited would make the show for which the state government will pay it Rs 12.81 crore, Kaushik said.
Varun Dhawan to tie the Paul Bettany says his superhero avatar knot with Natasha Dalal Vision is part Ultron, part Tony Stark on January 24 in Alibaug Hollywood star Paul Bettany says his superhero avatar, Vision, has always been part Tony Stark, or Iron Man, and part Ultron. Bettany is reprising his superhero character in the series "WandaVision". "I was worried initially. I was like, ‘Wow, this feels so different' as I read the script and (thought) how do I keep him the same," Bettany said while talking about the series. "And then I realised he has always been becoming something else. He is part J.A.R.V.I.S.. He is part Ultron. He is part Tony Stark. He is omnipotent... Then I realised, I will just throw a little bit of Dick Van Dyke in there and a little bit of Hugh Laurie," he added.

69-year-old actor Rajini Chandy trolled for ‘sexy’ photoshoot: ‘This is your age to pray’ Housewife-turned-actor Rajini Chandy, 69, generally wears colourful saris. For her latest photoshoot, however, she ditched her regular look and opted for western attire. Little did she know that the now-viral pictures would invite the attention of trolls. Chandy was clicked by 29-year-old photographer Athira Joy, in a range of outfits–from jumpsuit, long dress, a pair of distressed jeans, and a short denim dress. She also sported a crown made of white flowers. Chandy talked about how she was “shocked” initially to see the photoshoot outfits as she “hadn’t dressed up in such a sexy way in a long time” but was later “okay”. Chandy said, “I was called a slut. Someone asked me, ‘Haven’t you died yet?’ Another suggested that I ‘sit at home and read the Bible. This is your age to pray, not show off your body’. Yet another person said I was an old auto-rickshaw and even if I got a new coat of paint, I’d still be old.” Chandy also confessed that the trolling was getting to her. “A lot of young men find sexiness in older women disturbing, they don’t want to think of them as an object of desire. But what I found surprising was that most of the negative comments were made by women,” she was quoted as saying in the interview.
Hoodie with built-in mask
Among other things, the ongoing pandemic has left its impact on fashion too. In the past few months, we have seen fashion labels come up with unique designer masks and shields. The last fashion trend is a mask attached to an outfit, instead of being an additional accessory. We are talking about fashion brand PrettyLittleThing’s “oversized masked hoodie”. The hoodie, as seen here, comes with a mask attached around the neck. Available in grey and black, it has already reportedly sold out in many sizes
Intermittent Fasting All you need to know about the eating pattern
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, intermittent fasting — going without food for long hours periodically every week, or avoiding food for fixed hours every day — could work wonders for those with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases
Warm up your Sunday with millet coconut rice
Ingredients (Serves 2)
½ cup Little Millet (You can use any positive grain like Kodo, Barnyard, Browntop, Foxtail, etc.) 1 cup water ½ cup freshly grated coconut Rock Salt to taste For tempering: 1 tbsp cold pressed Coconut oil 1 Green Cardamom 1 small stick Cinnamon 1-2 Bay Leaves 1 tsp Chana Dal (washed and sun dried) 1 tsp Mustard Seeds 15-20 Curry Leaves 2 Dried Red Chillies
Method
Thoroughly wash and soak millet for a good 6-8 hours. In a deep pan, allow 1.25 cups water to The basic principle of IF is to give the body time to digest food, and in the process, burn out excess body fat and hence, detox. It is considered more attuned to the body’s circadian rhythm, and therefore, beneficial. According to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), intermittent fasting — going without food for long hours periodically every week, or avoiding food for fixed hours every day — could work wonders for those with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. “…intermittent-fasting interventions ameliorate obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia (abnormal amount of lipids), hypertension, and inflammation. Intermittent fasting seems to confer health benefits to a greater extent than can be attributed just to a reduction in caloric intake,” researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine reported in NEJM. Beginners can embrace the 16:8 format where “you allow the body to fast for 16

Perfect for those who are used to hitting the snooze button in the morning, and skipping breakfast.
Coutinho’s tips for beginners
*During the fasting phase, drink only plain water without any additives (no tea, coffee, green tea, apple cider vinegar). *Break the fast with a lemon and water concoction, followed by a whole fruit. You can then eat nuts after 20 minutes and a light homemade meal (like dal, rice, cooked veggies) an hour after that. *Follow this with a snack and dinner during the eating period, and then begin your fast.
What to note?
*Please consult with a doctor if you have chronic health issues, before embarking on an IF diet, said Coutinho.

PROVED
The More You Exercise, The Better It Is For Heart Health
Exercise benefits for heart health: You must aim to do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise in a week, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
B
enefits of exercise for heart health are limitless, as it has now been proved by science. It has been found that when it comes to cardiovascular health, every move counts and helps in lowering the risk of heart disease in people who exercised the most. Results of the study prove that people must aim to do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise in a week, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
Published in the journal PLOS Medicine, the study was conducted on 90,000 people, over a period of five years. Participants used wrist-worn accelerometers. Results of the study were found to be similar for men and women, though the benefits of vigorous exercise appeared to be particularly strong for women, reports Reuters. So here's a legs workout that you can do at home without much hassle. The workout can be completed in just 15
minutes and requires no equipment at all. This workout can be done anytime, anywhere. You can do it as a standalone workout or in combination with your weight training or cardio workout routines. The workout is a challenging one as it targets you legs. Watch the video below to see how each exercise is done. This workout alone is of a short duration, so it makes for a perfect fit on a day you fall short of time
Cancer can be killed by body's own immune system
A new way to help the body's immune system get past that deception and destroy cancer, has been found by a University of Missouri researcher.
N
ormal cells put up a 'don't-eat-me' molecular flag that is recognized by immune cells, thereby preventing the destruction of normal tissues. But some cancers have also developed the ability to mimic normal cells and produce this 'don't eat me' signal. As a consequence, the immune system fails to recognise cancer as a defective tissue and leaves it alone, which is bad news for the patient. Immunotherapies are cancer drugs that essentially block the "don't-eat-me" signal coming from cancer and allow the immune-system to kill it. In a previous study, scientists at the Cancer Research Center and the University of Missouri developed a genetically distinct and non-toxic strain of salmonella called CRC2631 to select and kill cancer cells. CRC2631 was derived from another strain of salmonella that had been stored at room temperature for more than half a century. Now, scientists like Chabu are demonstrating the ability for CRC2631, which enthusiastically targets cancerous tumours, to be used to unleash the body's immune-system against prostate cancer. "Because CRC2631 preferentially colonises tumour cells, the effect is mainly localized to the tumour. The use of CRC2631 to design and deliver patienttailored therapeutics foretells potential in precision medicine, or the ability to tailor a treatment to a specific patient," Chabu said. Highlighting the promise of personalised health care and the impact of large-scale interdisciplinary collaboration, the University of Missouri System's NextGen Precision Health initiative is bringing together innovators from across the system's four research universities in pursuit of life-changing precision health advancements. It's a collaborative effort to leverage the strengths of Mizzou and entire UM System toward a better future for Missouri's health. An important part of the initiative is the construction of the new NextGen Precision Health building, which will expand collaboration between researchers, clinicians and industry leaders in a state-of-the-art research facility.
food choices A Key to Health
Food preferences will change this year, Health and nutrition are going to be the key drivers of food trends and strengthening immunity will be the primary consumer focus. * Safe and hygienic cooking processes and the safety of the food consumed. It would be advisable for people to consume cooked/ boiled food rather than uncooked/raw food. * Taste will increasingly be overruled by health. Food cooked in sanitary conditions will be a priority. We are going to witness an increased consumption of greens and vegetables, and grains such as millets, wheat and rice. * We are also going to see a spike in the consumption of foods like avocados, fruits and cereal-based options. * Consumption of food from roadside eateries
and unregulated food stalls within and around corporate hubs are going to see a significant dip because of safety concerns. * Eggs have the highest consumption risks. Most food service providers do not focus adequately on sanitisation of eggs and this is a cause for concern, especially in our country. * Vegetarianism is expected to become more popular given the concerns around consumption of chicken, which is not produced in a hygienic way in the country generally.

Meet Kyuta: The China Debuts 'Floating' Train That 10-Year-Old, 85-Kilo Can Travel At 620 Kmph Sumo In Training
Among the young sumo wrestlers lifting weights in the ring, 10-year-old Kyuta Kumagai stands out. At 85 kilograms (187 lb), Kyuta is twice the size of the other children his age and is so dominant that he wrestles, and beats, boys five or six years older. Last year, he was crowned the under-10 world champion, beating out competition from as far afield as the United Kingdom and Ukraine. His training regime, devised by his father Taisuke, is relentless. He trains six days a week, either at his local sumo club or lifting weights. He also swims and practices track and field to build up the flexibility and explosive quickness needed for sumo wrestling. Kyuta has been on the programme since his father entered him in a tournament while still in kindergarten. "I didn't teach him anything, he could do various things naturally," said Taisuke, a former amateur sumo. "There is a talent for sumo and he has that talent. He won the tournament. I thought he may have something special." A shy boy of few words, Kyuta's motivations are simple. "It is fun to beat people older than me." "I'M BETTING EVERYTHING ON THIS" When it became apparent the boy had talent, Taisuke moved the family to the Fukugawa area of Tokyo that is famous for producing sumo wrestlers. It has an abundance of clubs and Nominosukune Shrine, where the God of Sumo is said to reside, meaning there is a lot of local support for the Kumagais. Father and son use a local temple for intense one-on-one training. The sessions tend to finish with the pair wrestling up and down the carpet in front of the main shrine. Taisuke pushes Kyuta so hard that the child is often left breathless and crying. But he believes it is the only way to get the best out of his son.
China has unveiled a prototype for a new high-speed maglev train that is capable of hitting speeds of 620 kilometers per hour. Created by scientists at the Southwest Jiaotong University, the train has no wheels. Instead, the magnetic levitation train has been developed with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, which uses magnets that allow it to 'hover' above the track, according to The Independent. This makes it look like the train is floating along the magnetized tracks and allows for faster, frictionless travel. The 69-foot prototype was unveiled in Chengdu on Wednesday. At the launch ceremony, the train was seen floating slowly along the track. "The superconductor technology the train employs could make it faster and lighter than its peers," state-run Xinhua News said in a tweet while sharing footage of the prototype.
Man Drives Car Onto Airport Runway, Says He Took A "Wrong Turn"
A motorist drove his car right onto an active airport runway in Thailand, allegedly under the influence of drugs. In the bizarre incident which unfolded on Tuesday, shocked airport staff watched as the man drove his car towards a plane which had just landed at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Footage of the incident shows the man being escorted off the runway by airport officials. The video was filmed by an unnamed member of the ground staff, reports the Daily Mail, and has gone viral on social media. "I don't know how the car made it onto the runway," the person filming can be heard saying. "The airport is such a valuable company, but they haven't even managed to stop the car from getting into the airport. This is such a safety and security breach. It's so terrible." According to news website The Thaiger,
Airports of Thailand released a press statement saying the man was "quickly" apprehended. He was later identified as one Prathipat Masakul. Mr Masakul, when apprehended by airport police, claimed that he had "taken a wrong turn". However, officials say that was high on methamphetamine. The drug was also found inside his vehicle. Squadron Leader Suthirawat Suwanwat, Director of the airport, said that staff "immediately intercepted and detained the driver to be investigated and prosecuted." While Mr Masakul has been detained on suspicion of intruding into restricted areas, illegal possession of drugs and illegally consuming and driving while under the influence of methamphetamine, airport officials are also trying to figure out how he managed to breach security and enter the runway.

Man Accidentally Throws Away Hard Drive With Bitcoin Worth $280 Million
A British man who threw away a hard drive with bitcoin worth 230 million pounds in it is once again trying to convince local authorities to let him search for the device in a landfill site. James Howells, a 35-yearold IT engineer from Newport, Wales, began mining the cryptocurrency in 2009, according to Metro News. He was cleaning his office in 2013 when he accidentally threw away the hard drive with bitcoin that is now worth a small fortune. The price of bitcoin has soared in recent years, though it was practically worthless when Mr Howells began mining it . According to news agency AFP, the virtual currency barrelled to new highs to rise more than 400 percent over the past year, before sliding some 20 percent and then settling around $36,000. Mr Howells says that he had 7,500 bitcoins which, at today's prices, would be worth more than $280 million. He claims he had two identical hard drives and mistakenly threw away the one which has the cryptographic "private key" he needs to access his bitcoin, reports CNBC. He is confident that he can recover the bitcoin even after all these years - but so far the Newport City Council has refused to let him search the landfill site he believes contains his hard drive. "There is a good chance the platter inside the drive is still intact," Mr Howells told CNBC. "Data recovery experts could then rebuild the drive or read the data directly from the platter." The 35-year-old has even offered to donate 25% of the bitcoins - worth around $70.8 million - to the city, but so far to no avail. The Newport City Council has rejected repeated requests from Mr Howells to let him look through the garbage dump which could contain the hard drive he threw out eight years ago. "The council has told Mr Howells on a number of occasions that excavation is not possible under our licencing permit and excavation itself would have a huge environmental impact on the surrounding area," a council spokesperson said. "The cost of digging up the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds - without any guarantee of either finding it or it still being in working order." Mr Howells is still making a last-ditch effort to convince the council. He says he has found a hedge fund willing to fund the excavation so the council would not have to pay for it.

The rocket had failed to reach orbit last year during the first test launch
Virgin Orbit’s rocket reached orbit and the satellites were released, meaning Sunday’s mission was a success. The headline has been updated to reflect this. The original story is below. Virgin Orbit — the sister company of billionaire Richard Branson’s space tourism outfit Virgin Galactic — will try a second test of its small satellite-launching rocket later today, months after it failed to reach orbit during a first attempt. It will also be the first time that the company tries to launch working satellites into space on behalf of NASA. Sometime after 1PM ET, Virgin Orbit’s customized Boeing 747 will take off from Virgin Galactic’s spaceport in the Mojave desert and ascend to 35,000 feet with the satellite-launching rocket attached to its wing. Once it reaches a predetermined location, the rocket is supposed to drop and ignite, taking the small satellites on board the rest of the way into orbit around the Earth. Virgin Orbit says the window for launch will last until 5PM ET. There is no live stream of the test, though the company plans to tweet updates throughout the flight. It will make photos and video available sometime after the test is completed. Virgin Orbit has spent years developing this method of airborne rocket-launching, and it has performed increasingly complex flight tests since 2018. But the first full test of the company’s rocket-launching capabilities in May of last year did not go completely as planned. The plane ascended correctly, the rocket dropped, and the main engine ignited. But a problem in the liquid oxygen fuel line prevented the rocket from reaching orbit.
Facebook suspends ads for Apple reportedly planning weapon accessories until at big iMac redesign and halfleast January 22nd sized Mac Pro
Facebook has updated its Inauguration Day preparations to include a temporary ban on ads that promote weapon accessories and protective equipment at least through January 22nd “out of an abundance of caution,” the company said in a new blog post Saturday. “We already prohibit ads for weapons, ammunition and weapon enhancements like silencers. But we will now also prohibit ads for accessories such as gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the US,” the statement reads. The ban comes after Facebook was criticized for allowing posts across its platforms that promoted and organized the deadly January 6th attack on the Capitol building. The ads for military gear such as body armor and gun holsters ran next to Facebook and Instagram posts about the insurrection at the Capitol that included calls for violence, as first reported by BuzzFeed News, A group of US senators wrote a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday, urging the company to “develop and execute a Facebook policy permanently prohibiting advertisements of products... primarily designed for use in lethal tactical operations and armed combat.”
The company added the temporary ban to its Inauguration Day preparations
In addition to revamped MacBook Pros that ditch the Touch Bar and resurrect MagSafe, Apple is also said to be planning to announce its long-awaited iMac redesign this year — and a pair of Mac Pro refreshes are on the roadmap, too. This is all according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says the iMac will undergo its most significant overhaul since 2012: Apple will reportedly ditch the chin beneath the screen, cut down on display bezels, and move to a flat-back design. The overall appearance will likely resemble the Pro Display XDR. The new iMac will replace the Intel-powered 27inch and 21.5-inch versions currently available and move the all-in-one desktop to Apple silicon. It’ll be one of the most significant visual makeovers of any Apple product this year, according to the report. The existing iMac packs top-tier specs and a beautiful screen into a design that has felt particularly outdated these last couple of years, so this change will be welcome. The last revision focused on increased speed, an improved webcam, and also added an option for a matte / nano-texture display coating. As for the Mac Pro, Apple seems to have a two-prong plan: it’ll refresh the current upgradeable tower design — Gurman says the company is considering sticking with Intel processors for this machine. But that doesn’t mean Apple is stalling on a Mac Pro that runs on its own chips. The company is also apparently at work on a completely new form factor that Gurman says is less than half the total size of the current Mac Pro. “The design will feature a mostly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube,” he says.
