US NEWS

Trump wants immigrants to come Come in ‘largest ever numbers’ but legally, says Trump as he declared to build the controversial border wall to deter illegal immigrants and smugglers ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

P

resident Donald Trump has said that he wants immigrants to come to the US in “largest ever numbers” legally, as he declared during his State of the Union address his determination to build the controversial border wall to deter illegal immigrants and smugglers. Delivering the address to the joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, he said: “Legal immigrants enrich our nation and strengthen our society in countless ways. I want people to come into our country, but they have to come in legally. I want people to come into our country in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally.” His showdown with Speaker

BRIEFS Ivanka hits back at lookalike art piece WASHINGTON: Ivanka Trump has blasted a performance art piece that features a lookalike of her vacuuming up crumbs that spectators toss Ivanka Trump at her. “Women can choose to knock each other down or build each other up,” the first daughter tweeted, alongside a link to a story on the exhibit. “I choose the latter.” The piece by artist Jennifer Rubell, titled “Ivanka Vacuuming”, invites visitors at Flashpoint Gallery to “throw crumbs on the carpet, watching as Ivanka elegantly vacuums up the mess.

Bernhardt to be named Interior Secy WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said that he will nominate David Bernhardt, acting secretary of the Department of Interior, to lead the agency. “David has done a fantastic job from the day he arrived,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday afternoon. “We look forward to having his nomination officially confirmed!” he added. Bernhardt, 49, would replace Ryan Zinke, who resigned in December amid ethics investigations, if Senate approves his nomination, Xinhua reported. —IANS

US President Donald Trump’s showdown with Speaker Nancy Pelosi delayed his speech by a week after she withdrew her initial invitation. (Photo: pbs.org)

Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, over funding for the border wall resulting in a 35-day government shutdown, delayed his speech by a

week after she withdrew her initial invitation to speak. Trump ultimately backed down with a truce to allow the govern-

ment to reopen temporarily to negotiate a deal with a February 15 deadline. He threatened to declare a State of Emergency if he did not get $5.7 billion funding for the barrier along the Mexico border and would use defense funds and the military to erect it. He did not announce an emergency in his speech, but without elaborating declared: “I’ll get it built.” Trump devoted a significant part of his 82-minute speech to illegal immigration and border security, pressing his demand for a wall and mocking “wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders, while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards”. Democrats immediately turned down his demand, steadfastly standing by their rejection of the wall. Stacy Abrams, who gave the

Democratic Party response to Trump’s address, said: “America is made stronger by the presence of immigrants — not walls.” Calling for “compassionate treatment at the border”, she said: “Democrats stand ready to effectively secure our ports and borders” but her party leaders were against a wall. An African American, Abrams narrowly lost the Governor’s election in Georgia last year and her unusual choice was to reinforce the gulf between Trump and the Democrats. Speaking before a polarized chamber, the President made a plea for bipartisanship saying: “Together, we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions and forge new solutions.”

Judge rejects defamation case against Cohen IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US judge earlier this week dismissed porn star Stormy Daniels’ defamation claim against Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, filed as part of her ongoing legal battle with the President. The defamation claim brought by Daniels against Cohen was dismissed by District Judge S. James Otero “with prejudice” — meaning it cannot be brought again against him. It is just one of the lawsuits that Daniels filed that involve Cohen, CNN reported on Tuesday. In the case, Daniels had asserted that Cohen insinuated she was a liar in a public statement denying

that she and Trump had an affair. Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti said the defamation case was resolved after the legal teams for Daniels and Cohen asked for the

claim to be dismissed. “The court already stated we received everything we asked for because Cohen and Trump were forced to admit we were right all

along,” Avenatti said in a statement. But Cohen’s lawyer Brent Blakely called the ruling a “clear win” for his client. “Rather than fighting in court, Daniels and her attorney instead chose to abandon the case — the legal equivalent of running away,” Blakely said. Daniels had previously filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump that was dismissed by the same judge. The case in question was separate from the initial lawsuit Daniels filed against Cohen and Trump. She was also suing Cohen and Trump over the $130,000 payment made to her to keep silent about the alleged affair in the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

US set to deploy more forces at Mexico border IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he Pentagon has announced that it will deploy 3,750 additional US forces at the country’s border with Mexico for 90 days to provide support to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials. The Department of Defense said in a statement on Sunday that the additional forces will raise the total number of active duty troops supporting the CBP at the border to about 4,350, reports NBC News. The support they will provide

includes “mobile surveillance capability” and the placement of “approximately 150 miles of concertina wire between ports of entry”, the statement said. The additional forces were approved by Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan on January 11. On January 29, Shanahan said the US would be sending “several thousand” more troops to the Mexico border. The move comes as another caravan of asylum seekers from Central America has been making its way to the US border.

Last week, the Trump administration also began its new policy of sending some migrants seeking asylum back to Mexico while they await court hearings that are set to take place in San Diego.

The Pentagon had announced last October that it would deploy an additional 5,600 troops to the border in the wake of a caravan making its way to the US that month from Central America.

Robert Vadra quizzed by ED over ‘links’ to absconding arms dealer The case relates to the ownership of assets abroad, allegedly belonging to Vadra IANS, NEW DELHI

R

obert Vadra, brother-inlaw of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who appeared for the second round of questioning before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday, was confronted with his mails that were exchanged with Sumit Chadha, a relative of absconding arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari, sources said. Vadra, who was questioned for over two hours before he stepped out for lunch, was asked about the mails he exchanged with Chadha in reference to a London property, the ED sources said. The case relates to the ownership of 1.9 million pounds of undisclosed assets abroad, allegedly belonging to Vadra. A money laundering case was registered against Vadra’s close aide Manoj Arora after his role surfaced during a probe by the Income Tax Department into another case under the new Black Money Act and tax laws against Bhandari. The London property was allegedly bought by Bhandari and sold in 2010 for the same amount despite incurring additional expenses on its renovation. Vadra left the ED’s Jamnagar office around 1.30 p.m. He had

joined the session almost an hour late at 11.20 a.m., although he was asked to appear at 10.30 a.m. On Wednesday, Vadra was questioned for the first time by any of the investigating agencies for over six hours. Unlike the first day, the businessman was not accompanied by his wife Priyanka Gandhi, who had dropped him off at the office on Wednesday.

Mamata ends sit-in, SC asks Kumar to appear before CBI KOLKATA: Close to 45 hours after starting her ‘save Constitution’ dharna in the heart of the city, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday ended the sitin to protest CBI’s attempt to question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in a probe into the ponzi scheme scam. While calling off the demonstration, she announced a meeting of opposition leaders next week in the national capital, where the Supreme Court during the day directed Kumar to appear before the federal probe agency in Shillong. The Trinamool Congress supremo, who recently played a pivotal role in knitting an anti-BJP alliance across the country, was joined by a host of senior opposition leaders during the course of her demonstration. These included Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and

Hearing a case filed by the CBI, the Supreme Court directed Kumar to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Saradha cheat fund case in Shillong “on such date(s) as may be fixed and to “fruitfully cooperate with the investigating agency at all times”. —IANS

On December 7, 2018, as part of the investigation, the ED conducted searches at a number of premises in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru. The ED told a city court earlier that the London property was part of the kickbacks received in a petroleum deal. The money was transferred by Santech International, FZC, a UAE-based company controlled by Bhandari.

Arora, who is an employee of Vadra’s Skylight Hospitality LLP, is a key suspect in the case as he is aware of the overseas investments and purchases made by his employer. The questioning came in the wake of an order by a Delhi court on February 2 directing Vadra to appear before the ED for questioning while hearing the anticipatory bail plea filed by him.

NEW DELHI: Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday made a strong political statement of openly backing her controversial husband Robert Vadra by dropping him at the Enforcement Directorate office when he came to face questioning in connection with a money laundering case filed against him. “I stand by my family,” she later told reporters at the AICC headquarters where Congress workers shouted slogans hailing her. “Priyanka you fight on, we are with you!” Priyanka Gandhi, who was appointed the Congress General Secretary (East) a fortnight ago made her first public appearance on Wednesday when she accompanied her husband in a SUV. Both hugged each other and planted a kiss on each other’s cheek before Vadra came out of the car outside the ED office in Jamnagar House at the mouth of the India Gate circle. The BJP has been attacking Vadra, Priyanka, the fifth generation member of the Nehru-Gandhi family, and the Congress over the cases allegedly involving him.

Brexit: Should India worry?

The EU leaders have made it clear they are not prepared to reopen negotiations on a deal they have already agreed to. So, India needs to prepare for a probable no-deal Brexit NARESH KAUSHIK, LONDON

T

he clock is ticking. Britain is set to leave the European Union on March 29, less than two months from now. Itll crash out without a deal if the two sides fail to reach a fresh agreement following a new vote in the British parliament earlier this week. A no deal Brexit, which is now more likely than ever, will have catastrophic consequences for the British economy as many business leaders have warned. It will also hurt the European Union particularly its largest economy, Germany, which has a significant market for its products in Britain. India is closely watching what is increasingly becoming a messy divorce between the UK and the EU. Many Indian companies which have invested heavily in Britain over the past few years are worried. The UK has been seen by Indian firms as a gateway to the EU. A common market has so far ensured these companies barrierfree access to the EU countries. There are more than 800 Indian companies in the UK which employ over 110,000 people. More than half of them work in just five companies from the Tata group, one of the largest foreign investors in Britain. A no-deal Brexit will directly hit these com-

panies forcing thousands out of jobs. In the past few years, many Indian companies have flourished in Britain like Rolta, Bharti Airtel and Aegis Outsourcing. These firms operating in the UK have up to 13% exposure to revenues earned in the British currency, although from EU the number is as high as 30%. Brexit is obviously bad news for them. Their revenues will be hit because of the likely weakening of the pound sterling.

Many Indians are also worried of the socio-political consequences of Brexit. A sizable number of Indians and other South Asians voted in favor of Brexit because politicians from the Leave side promised them easy migration of talent from ex-Commonwealth nations. For example, Indian restaurant owners were promised they would be able to bring in more chefs after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. But, in fact, die-hard Brexit sup-

porters are right-wing groups who hate any immigration. If the British economy suffers and more people are thrown out of jobs, as is predicted, such groups are likely to turn their anger towards non-white people. But not all Indians are worried. Many will see Brexit as an opportunity for India to be able to negotiate a favorable trade deal with Britain. India is seen as a priority for such a deal by British politicians.

India will also see an opportunity in finalizing a trade deal with the European Union. India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks were suspended in 2013 after the two sides failed to reach a deal even after six years of talks. Since then the two sides have had summitlevel discussions but no real progress has been made. Brexit will give the EU an impetus to reopen the FTA talks. But despite the lack of an FTA, trade between the EU and India has been growing steadily and has doubled in the past decade. The EU is India’s largest trading partner at 85 billion euros or Rs 8,500 crore in 2017. However, from the EU’s perspective, India is only the ninth biggest trading partner, much behind China. So India has a lot of potential to fill this gap after Brexit. European leaders, particularly from Germany and France, have been wooing the Indian government in recent months. It would of course, be more in India’s interest if there is an orderly exit of Britain from the EU, an exit with an agreement to explore a trade agreement. That would help Indian firms to continue to benefit from a common market. The EU leaders have already made it clear they are not prepared to reopen negotiations on a deal they have already agreed to. So India needs to prepare for a probable no-deal Brexit.

India needs a Well-Being Index A well-being study, at the end of 2018, revealed that life satisfaction in India dropped by 10% from 2006-17 FRANK F ISLAM, WASHINGTON

L

ast year was not a bad year in general for India. GDP growth has been relatively good, the Modi administration has launched several new initiatives, and India’s status and world image has strengthened. The problem is that these are all topline measures and do not get down to how the Indian people are feeling. Recent research on this, unfortunately, indicates they are not feeling very happy. India ranked as 133 out of 156 countries on the UN 2018 World Happiness Report (Happiness Report). This was 11 spots lower than India’s 2017 ranking. India’s dismal 2018 ranking placed it far below most developing nations around the world and near the very bottom for the South Asian countries surveyed.

A well-being study released by social science researchers at the end of 2018 revealed that life satisfaction in India dropped by 10 percent from 2006-17. What accounts for India’s poor performance on these assessments? There is no simple explanation. It is instructive, however, to consider the factors that have the greatest impact on achieving good scores on them. As noted in the Executive Summary of the Happiness Report, “All the top countries tend to have high values for all six of the key variables that have been found to support well-being: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity.” The well-being study disclosed that “The life satisfaction of individuals worldwide correlates with income, health, jobs, education as well as with positive moods, freedom and

beliefs about work benefits.” India obviously does not score well on most of those factors. There are various studies that have highlighted major deficiencies in areas such as income, health, education and employment. India, as do most other countries, puts considerable emphasis on measuring GDP growth and tracking other economic indicators regularly. The assumption is that moving the needle positively on those metrics will cause benefits to flow through to citizens. There are two old proverbs. One states: “What is measured matters.” The other says: “What gets measured gets managed.” By putting a well-being measurement system in place, India would demonstrate that the happiness of its citizens matter and provide the platform for developing and implementing policies for enhanc-

ing their life satisfaction. Given that, I recommend the development of monthly WellBeing Index. Such an Index could be the definitive source for information on the well-being of the Indian citizenry. Social scientists, economists and statisticians can decide what goes into the Index and its metrics. The important thing is that the Index be developed and put into place as quickly as possible.

The reason for this is that the available data shows that India is moving backward rather than forward in terms of enhancing the happiness and life satisfaction of its people. A Well-Being Index would be a starting point for focusing attention on a happier India and bringing Indians together to work in unison on being the change that will be necessary to achieve that end.

Trump-Kim summit 2.0 in Feb Trump and Kim had met in Singapore in June generating significant coverage and optimism, but concrete developments were still awaited IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump announced the time and date for his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam. Addressing the Congress and the nation in his much awaited State of the Union on Tuesday, Trump said: “Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in 15 months. If I had not been elected President of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea. Much work remains to be done, but my rela-

tionship with Kim Jong-un is a good one.” However, a US official said the Trump administration still have to

finalize last points with the North Koreans. Stephen Biegun, the American envoy for North Korea talks, was in Pyongyang on

Wednesday to hold talks ahead of the Vietnam summit. Biegun aimed to establish a roadmap for denuclearization with North Korea. His visit comes as a UN report warned that North Korea was committing “massive” breaches of sanctions and continuing its weapons programme, the BBC said. Trump and Kim had met in Singapore in June generating significant coverage and optimism, but concrete developments were still awaited. Plans for the second summit have been in the works since the two leaders’ historic talks last year. The June 2018 summit was the first ever meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Russia to exit INF Treaty in six months IANS, MOSCOW

R

ussia on Wednesday said that it will mirror the US’ withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty between the countries, formally exiting the agreement in six months. The INF Treaty was signed in December 1987 between the then Soviet Union and the US on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. Moscow and Washington have been accusing each other of violating the agreement in recent years

amid increasing tensions. The latest move by Russia was announced by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to state news agency RIA-Novosti. It came after the Donald Trump administration last week said it would be pulling out of the nuclear missile treaty, accusing Moscow of violating its terms since 2014. Lavrov called Washington’s accusations “unfounded” and said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position was to “respond in a mirrored fashion” to the US. “The Americans suspended their participation in this treaty -- we did

the same. After a six-month period, according to the results of the official note of the US on withdrawal from this treaty, it will cease to function,” he added. The US’ withdrawal has raised concerns about a renewed arms race with Moscow and put European allies on edge, CNN reported.

“We are heading into a direction we have not been in 40 years. No arms control limits or rules that we are both following, and that is very dangerous,” said Lynn Rusten, a senior Director for Arms Control and Non-proliferation at the National Security Council during the Obama administration.

Gilani stopped from going abroad LAHORE: Former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was stopped from leaving Pakistan after his name was found to be on a no-fly list, the media reported. According to officials, Gilani reached the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore on Tuesday to catch a flight to South Korea where he was scheduled to attend a conference. But he was at the immigration counter that his name was on the Exit Control List and he could not leave the country, Dawn online reported on Wednesday. Pakistan’s anti-graft body, the National Accountability Bureau, had in September filed a corruption reference against Gilani and several others for allegedly misusing their authority in an illegal publicity campaign which caused a huge loss to the national exchequer.

Shehbaz Sharif to be indicted on Feb 18 LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif will be indicted in the multi-billion Ashiana Housing Scheme case on February 18, the media reported. Pakistan anti-corruption body, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), had arrested the leader of the opposition on October 5 in connection with the case. The watchdog had said that Sharif was involved in corruption in the Ashiana Iqbal Housing Scheme case during his tenure as Punjab province’s Chief Minister from 2013 to May 2018. It said that he had “misused his powers” and granted contracts to unqualified companies of his friends, causing “losses of millions of rupees to the national exchequer”. —IANS

enezuela’s National Assembly (AN) — or Parliament —with its overwhelming opposition majority, on Tuesday approved a law that will govern an eventual political transition in the country and will enter into force once elected President Nicolas Maduro, whom the AN does not recognize, leaves power. CARACAS: The self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, on Wednesday ordered the country’s armed forces to allow the entry of international humanitarian aid. “Once again, a direct order to the armed forces at this time: Allow the necessary humanitarian aid to enter to take care of your families, your sister, your mother, your wife, who surely need supplies and some of whom, unfortunately, surely also have certain health conditions,” said Guaido at a meeting with agricultural producers.

Thus, the anti-Chavista forces contend that the duties and responsibilities of the executive devolve onto the head of the AN, Juan Guaido, until new elections can be held. On January 23, Guaido proclaimed himself the country’s interim president, and since then he has established a roadmap whereby the opposition — backed by a large portion of the regional and international community who, likewise, do not recognize the Chavista leader — can remove Maduro from power.

Trump nominee Rao faces scrutiny Neomi Rao is in trouble for the commentary that women should change behaviour to avoid date rape IANS, WASHINGTON

he judicial wars returned to Washington this week as the Senate Judiciary Committee met to consider Neomi Rao, President Donald Trump’s nominee for newest Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s now-vacant seat on a powerful appellate court in Washington. Indian-American woman, Rao, who serves as Trump’s “czar” overseeing regulatory rollbacks, faced fierce questioning from Democrats not just for her work in the Trump administration but for commentary she wrote decades ago as a Yale

Tolerance is UAE’s soul: Hindu priest ABU DHABI: A Hindu priest said here at an event that “tolerance is the soul” of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and that an upcoming temple in the city represented unique diversity and fraternity. “A foreign journalist once asked me whether tolerance in the UAE was only cosmetic? Not at all. It is not skin deep, tolerance is the soul of the UAE,” Sadhu Brahma Viharidas, who is in charge of the Middle East at BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha that will build and manage the temple, said. Viharidas said the UAE is a unique example of tolerance.

As most every Democratic senator on the dais mentioned her early writings, Rao stressed that they occurred nearly “two decades” ago at a “time of exploration” in college. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who recently publicly disclosed she had been a victim of sexual assault, said Rao’s columns gave her “pause”, CNN reported. In one piece for the Yale Herald written in 1994 titled “Shades of

Gray,” Rao responded to an alleged date rape incident on campus by writing: “It has always seemed selfevident to me that even if I drank a lot, I would still be responsible for my actions.” She added: “A man who rapes a drunk girl should be prosecuted. At the same time, a good way to avoid a potential date rape is to stay reasonably sober.” On Tuesday, Rao said that when she was writing about the incident she emphasised that rape is a crime and no one should “blame the victim” but that she had attempted to make a “common-sense observation” that there were some actions a woman could take so it would be

less likely she would become a victim. Rao said she hoped she has “matured” as a writer and a person. Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont seized on her com-

ments and said that as a former prosecutor, he had dealt with rape cases. He said he feared her sentiments might lead some women to be too ashamed to report rape.

Indian students stuck in visa row in US IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US has accused the students arrested in connection with a fake university visa scam of being “aware they were committing a crime” for visas when they enrolled at the institution while lawyers for those charged accused the government of tricking them. The State Department said on Monday in a statement: “All participants in this scheme knew that the University of Farmington had no instructors or classes (neither online nor in-person) and were aware they were committing a

crime in an attempt to fraudulently remain in the US.” The US reaction came after India’s External Affairs Ministry issued a demarche to the US embassy in New Delhi asserting

that the students “have been duped into enrolling in the ‘university’ (and) should be treated differently from those recruiters who have duped them”. Lawyers for the accused recruiters

in the scam on Monday accused the government of tricking the students into enrolling at the University of Farmington, a fake institution set up by US law enforcement officials in a sting operation to crackdown on visa fraud, according to the Detroit Free Press. Last week, US immigration officials arrested 129 Indian students and eight alleged recruiters involved with the university. John Brusstar, a lawyer for one of the accused recruiters, criticized the sting operation saying “it is unfair for the government to set up something like this to entrap people”, the Free Press reported.

US Senator registered for Swedish PMO has a Maharashtra connection bar as ‘American Indian’ IANS, PUNE (MAHARASHTRA)

WASHINGTON: US Senator and prospective Democratic candidate for President Elizabeth Warren listed her race as “American Indian” on a State Bar of Texas registration card in 1986, the media reported. The yellow registration card, which is dated April 1986, was filled out in blue ink and signed by Warren, the Washington Post reported. The card listed Warren’s alma maters the University of Houston and Rutgers Law School but no other racial identifiers. A Warren aide did not dispute the

card’s authenticity and declined to comment on whether there might be other unreported examples of her having Elizabeth claimed American Warren Indian heritage. The Senator has been trying to get past the lingering controversy over her past assertion that she is a Native American. We comprehensively beat Thailand in the opening game but missed out on close chances to the UAE and Bahrain. I can say that’s a far superior performance for the side,” Das remarked.

Actress Esha Gupta wishes footballer Alexander Iwobi forgives her for her "careless action". (Photo: IANS)

Esha Gupta pens apology letter to Nigerian footballer MUMBAI: Bollywood actress and Arsenal supporter Esha Gupta, who faced anger on social media for making racist remarks against Alexander Iwobi, has penned an apology letter to the Nigerian footballer. Esha wrote: “I am extremely sorry for my ignorant action last Friday. Being an ardent fan of many years, I was deeply engrossed and caught up in the game.” She said she “clearly did not realize the racial undertone” from her friend’s message, which she had shared on Instagram last week. “For this, I am deeply regretful. I cannot begin to imagine how much I have hurt your sentiments. Racism has absolutely no place in my heart, and I promise you, for whatever it’s worth, going forward this will never happen again,” she said. Esha wished Iwobi forgives her for her “careless action”.

She even wrote a letter to the Arsenal Football Club, wherein she wrote: “I hope the club can accept my humblest apology and give me the opportunity to make amends. I promise to be very responsible from here on.” On January 28, social media was abuzz over a snapshot of a Whatsapp conversation that Esha shared on her Instagram stories. The conversation criticized Iwobi for his performance. In the conversation, Esha’s friend called Iwobi a “gorilla” and said that “evolution stopped for him”. He even said that the footballer did not change from “neanderthal to man”. To that, Esha laughed and replied: “Haha... I don’t know why they don’t bench him more.” She quickly deleted the image from her profile when she realized her mistake, but the screenshot had already gone viral. —IANS

‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha...’: A love story well told

D

ebutant director Shelly Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is an interesting romance tale with a social message, where love blossoms at a wedding and culminates on the stage of a theatrical performance. The story pivots around Sweety (Sonam K. Ahuja) the daughter of prominent business man and garmanufacturer Balbir ment Chaudhry (Anil Kapoor). In fact he is described as, “The Mukesh Ambani of Moga, Punjab”. At a wedding, Kuhu (Regina Cassandra) one of the girls attending the wedding briefly introduces her brother Raza (Akshay Oberoi) to Sweety. She tells her that Raza is settled in London and interested in her. Next we learn that Sweety travels to Delhi with the intention of making enquiries about further studies in London. Here, by hap-

penstance, she bumps into Sahil Mirza (Rajkummar Rao) a writerdirector, during his play rehearsals, where she criticises his work by telling him, “True love ke raaste mein kuch na kuch syappa hona chaiye nahin to woh feel nahin aati”. Every character is well-defined

and etched, the actors do complete justice to their roles. Rajkummar Rao steals the show with his passionate rendering of Sahil. Equally impressive is Abhishek Duhan as Balbir. Anil Kapoor with his indigenous style, is charming and a delight to watch. He is effortless in bringing out the father-daughter relationship to the fore and at the same time, brings up enough chuckles

when he shows his interest in Chattro. Juhi Chawla as Chattro appears contrived. She delivers a stereotypical performance, emulating Upasna Singh the original diva of Punjabi films and she comes out as fake. Sonam K. Ahuja though sincere, appears pretentious. She hams in most of her scenes and more so especially in the one before the interval. She is not a bad actress, but her performance definitely shows that she has not put her heart and soul into the character she plays. Regina Cassandra as Kuhu and Akshay Oberoi are both cute and likeable, but are limited due to their short on-screen presence. Overall, this is not the usual, runof-the mill love story. It is a progressive one and definitely the forerunner of myriad blossoming love stories to come. —Troy Ribeiro

Daughters are special: Amitabh Bachchan

Harshita talks about ‘PuncchBeat’

A

ctress Harshita Gaur feels good that PuncchBeat is being compared to filmmaker Karan Johar’s Student of the Year, but says her upcoming show is not similar to the 2012 movie. Some have compared the promo of the show to Student of the Year, which revolved around high school students played by actors Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Harshita simply takes it as a compliment. “The film is so good and it is good to be compared to it but it is not similar to the movie. It is peripheral to the film,” Harshita said in a statement. She feels that any story of a project with a similar storyline of a big hit film will be compared.

Fall Risk: Ways to Prevent Falls BY STAFF WRITER CHICGO, IL- Risk Increases with Age :- Many people have a friend or relative who has fallen. The person may have slipped while walking or felt dizzy when standing up from a chair and fallen. Maybe you’ve fallen yourself. If you or an older person you know has fallen, you’re not alone. More than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year. The risk of falling -- and fall-related problems -- rises with age. Falls Lead to Fractures, Trauma:- Each year, more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults go to emergency departments for fall-related injuries. Among older adults, falls are the number one cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma, loss of independence, and injury deaths. Fractures caused by falls can lead to hospital stays and disability. Most often, fall-related fractures are in the person’s hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand, or ankle. Hip fractures are one of the most serious types of fall injury. They are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence, among older adults. Most healthy, independent older adults who are hospitalized for a broken hip are able to return home or live on their own after treatment and rehabilitation. Most of those who cannot return to independent living after such injuries had physical or mental disabilities before the fracture. Many of them will need long-term care. Tell Your Doctor If You Fall:- If you fall, be sure to discuss the fall with your doctor, even if you aren’t hurt. Many underlying causes of falls can be treated or corrected. For example, falls can be a sign of a new medical problem that needs attention, such as diabetes or changes in blood pressure, particularly drops in blood pressure on standing up. They can also be a sign of problems with your medications or eyesight that can be corrected. After a fall, your

doctor may suggest changes in your medication or your eyewear prescription. He or she may also suggest physical therapy, use of a walking aid, or other steps to help prevent future falls. These steps can also make you more confident in your abilities. Ways to Prevent Falls:- Exercise to improve your balance and strengthen your muscles helps to prevent falls. Not wearing bifocal or multifocal glasses when you walk, especially on stairs, will make you less likely to fall. You can also make your home safer by removing loose rugs, adding handrails to stairs and hallways, and making sure you have adequate lighting in dark areas. Fear of Falling:- Many older adults are afraid of falling. This fear becomes more common as people age, even among those who haven’t fallen. It may lead older people to avoid activities such as walking, shopping, or taking part in social activities. If you’re worried about falling, talk with your doctor or another health care provider. Your doctor may refer you to a physical therapist. Physical therapy can help you improve your balance and walking and help build your walking confidence. Getting rid of your fear of falling can help you to stay active, maintain your physical health, and

prevent future falls. About us: Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. BY A STAFF WRITER ROCHESTER, NY- Three men charged with planning an attack on a Muslim community in Islamberg, New York, will appear in court Wednesday. Police say the men and one 16-yearold had access to 23 firearms and three explosive devices when they were arrested. They are all from the Rochester area, and three of the suspects were once Boy Scouts together. Thanks to some students at an upstate school who saw something and said something, a plot to attack an upstate Muslim community called Islamberg with homemade bombs was broken up by cops, authorities said. The scheme was uncovered when one of the alleged plotters — a 16-year-old student at Greece Odyssey Academy — was overheard making comments at the school about someone being “the next school shooter,” police said. Officials investigated the comments when another student reported them — and found that there was no school shooting being planned. But they did find out that the teen and three other young men were allegedly scheming to attack Islamberg. The community near Binghamton was founded in the 1980s by a group of AfricanAmerican Muslims from New York City. Authorities arrested 20-year-old Brian Colaneri of Rochester, 18-year-old Andrew Crysel of East Rochester, 19-year-old Vincent Vetromile of Greece and the 16-year-old on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and conspiracy.

Poetry from various other prominent poets presented a selection of verses from various ghazals and nazms. The verses had glimpses of melancholy and spoke of beauty, peace, struggle and purpose of life. 100 Indian Students Arrested in Sting Operation at Fake University BY A STAFF WRITER FARMINGTON, MI — Several hundred Indian students face arrest following the arrest of eight recruiters and some students over an alleged immigration fraud detected by a fake university sting operation set up by government agencies to crack down on visa scams. The American Telugu Association reported that 100 students were arrested in morning raids Jan. 31. The Indian Consulate General in Chicago reported receiving the names of 29 Indians arrested in the case. The charges against the eight people who allegedly ran the scheme were made public in a federal court in Detroit in Michigan State. The Department of Homeland Security said in court documents that it set up Farmington University with undercover agents as staff in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to target foreign students who were staying in the U.S. without proper authorization. ATA said on its website that it contacted several attorneys and confirmed that arrest warrants for 600 students had been issued and 100 students arrested. Indian diplomats in Chicago contacted U.S. government officials to get information about the case, P.K. Mishra, the head of Chancery at the Consulate General, told IANS Jan. 31. The DHS had so far provided the consulate with the names of 29 arrested

persons, he said. The ATA has set up an emergency help team to aid those affected. It is conducting a webinar with immigration lawyers on Jan. 31 evening on the Farmington case and student visas. The ATA urged the “students to be wary of fake agents who promise illegal ways to stay in the US through admissions in unaccredited colleges and universities.” The eight student recruiters were charged with participating in a conspiracy to help at least 600 “foreign citizens to illegally remain, re-enter and work in the

U.S. and actively recruited them to enroll in a fraudulent school as part of a “pay to stay” scheme, according to the court documents. Six of them were reported arrested in Detroit and one each in Florida and Virginia. They collectively received $250,000 in cash and kickbacks to find students to attend the university, according to prosecutors, the Detroit News reported. It said that according to a prosecutor, the arrested students face deportation. Under the U.S. judicial system, their

cases had been presented before a panel of jurors comprised of citizens known as the grand jury that first determines if there is sufficient grounds to bring them to trial. The grand jury had issued an indictment with the charges for a trial, which is to take place later. The so-called university offered student visas without requiring them to attend classes, enabling them to work illegally. This is at least the second fake university run by government agencies. The U.S. law enforcement frequently uses elaborate sting operations by undercover agents to deter crimes of all types. The ATA said that the news was brought to its attention by the affected students and their friends and that the association’s legal and local teams in various cities swung into action for guidance and help. The recruiters were identified as Bharath Kakireddy from Florida, Aswanth Nune from Atlanta, Suresh Reddy Kandala from Virginia, Phanideep Karnati from Kentucky, Prem Kumar Rampeesa from North Carolina, Santosh Reddy Sama from California, Avinash Thakkallapally from Pennsylvania, and Naveen Prathipati from Dallas. Rahul Reddy, an Indian American immigration attorney in Houston, Texas, said in a live-stream on YouTube that students who may have been enrolled at the university were detained in Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte and St. Louis.
