Trump, Sanders emerge top fundraisers Trump’s war chest is about $30 million, while Senator Sanders, vying for the Democratic Party nomination, has collected $18 million. Harris is behind them with $12 million ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
T
he two aspirants for the party nominations for the 2020 presidential elections from the two extreme ends of the electoral spectrum, US President Donald Trump and self-described socialist Bernie Sanders, are leading the race in poll fund-raising. According to their campaign finance filings for the first quarter, Trump's war chest is about $30 million, while Senator Sanders, vying for the Democratic Party nomination, has collected $18 million. Senator Kamala Harris is behind them with $12 million, followed by Beto O'Rourke with $9.4 million, Pete Buttigieg with $7.1 million and Senator Elizabeth Warren with $6 million. O'Rourke, a former Representative, was defeated in his Senate run from Texas last year, while Buttigieg is Mayor of a small university town in Indiana state. But they have received a lot of positive publicity in the media. Fund-raising is considered a sign of popularity and is one of the markers for selecting participants

for the Democratic Party's televised debate among candidates starting in June. Former Vice-President Joe Biden, leading the opinion polls for the Democratic nomination, is
yet to officially announce his candidature and has not raised funds. The 16 Democratic Party candidates, for whom the filings are available, have together collected about $80 million, which is far
higher than Trump's election haul. But they suffer a serious handicap against Trump. The Democratic candidates will be using most of their funds till the middle of next year to fight each other during pri-
Don’t release tax returns: Trump lawyer to Treasury IANS, WASHINGTON
D
onald Trumps personal lawyer urged the Treasury Department not to hand over the US President’s tax returns to House Democrats, warning that releasing the documents to lawmakers he accused of having a “radical view of unchecked congressional power” would turn the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) into a political weapon.
The letter this week by lawyer William S. Consovoy, was the second written on behalf of Trump since Representative Richard E. Neal, the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, formally requested six years of the President’s personal and business tax returns earlier this month, The New York Times reported. On April 13, Neal gave the IRS a “hard deadline” until April 23 to provide him with the tax returns

Muslim Congresswoman experiences death threats IANS, WASHINGTON
M
uslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has said that in the days since President Donald Trump tweeted about a speech she gave last month, she has experienced an increase in death threats. "Since the President's tweet Friday evening (April 12), I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life -- many directly referencing or replying to the Presi-
dent's video. I thank the Capitol Police, the FBI, the House Sergeant at Arms, and the Speaker of the House for their attention to these threats," Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, said in a statement released last week. She also alleged that President Trump is encouraging right-wing extremist violence, CNN reported. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders denied earlier Sunday the President was trying to incite violence.
In the April 12 tweet, Trump wrote: "We will never forget!" and included video of a speech Omar gave last month in which she said: "For far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a secondclass citizen and, frankly, I'm tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it. "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to civil liberties."
maries to be anointed the party candidate at the convention in July 2020, rather than Trump. About 20 candidates are vying for the Democratic Party nomination. Trump has a huge advantage because he does not have a serious challenger for the Republican nomination — and, if none emerge, he will not have to spend funds on the primary, leaving him with a larger pool for re-election campaign. Whatever he spends during primaries will, in effect, also contribute to building his image for re-election. His fundraising also displayed his continuing attraction among middle class and working class Americans. Although Trump is perceived to be aligned with big business, he got nearly 99 per cent of his funds from individuals contributing $200 or less, with the average being under $35. Like Trump, Sanders had a strong showing with his base that is almost similar if politically polar opposite. He has received 84 per cent of his funds from people sending less than $200, with the average being $20. reason he cannot release the documents, despite no rule or law that prevents him from doing so. Neal used an obscure provision of the tax code to request the returns, which he said his committee needs in order to evaluate the policy of automatic audits of presidential tax returns. Trump and his defenders argue that the request is being driven by politics and represents presidential harassment. Consovoy said that the legal rationale behind Neal’s dismissal of the Treasury Department’s concerns was wrong. He noted that House Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee concluded that a request for Trump’s tax returns was not a legitimate use of their oversight powers.
Weld announces Presidential bid WASHINGTON: Bill Weld, the former Governor of the US state of Massachusetts, has announced that he was officially entering the 2020 presidential race, becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump who he thinks “mocks the law”. “Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence. In these times of great political strife...,” CNN quoted Weld as saying this week. —IANS

JET AIRWAYS GROUNDED India’s civil aviation regulator asked the debt-laden airline to submit a concrete and credible revival plan to restart operations
Jet staff blame government, lenders for crisis

A
round 20,000 employees and passengers were hit hard as Jet Airways announced temporary suspension of all flight services from Wednesday night as it failed to secure interim funding for maintaining even bare minimum operations. At present, the airline has over 15,000 direct and 5,000 indirect employees. It operated five aircraft with over 25 flights on Wednesday. Late Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Civil Aviation tweeted
India suspends LoC trade, says being used for fuel terror NEW DELHI: India on Thursday suspended, with immediate effect, trade across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, saying it was being used by unscrupulous and anti-national elements for sneaking in hawala money and weapons from the territory under Pakistani occupation to fuel terrorism and separatism in the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs said a probe conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had revealed that some individuals, who have crossed over to Pakistan and joined militant organizations, have opened trading firms there and these were under the control of militant organizations and were engaged in the LoC trade. —IANS
that: “DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and other regulators are monitoring the situation carefully to ensure that all existing rules regarding refunds, cancellations, and alternate bookings are followed strictly”. “Our overriding priority remains the safety, convenience, and affordability of our aviation system. We are assisting airlines and airports to bring in capacity rapidly to ensure that fares remain stable and competitive.” On Thursday, India’s civil aviation regulator asked Jet Airways to submit a “concrete and credible
revival plan” to restart operations suspended by the debt-laden airline. “DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) would endeavour to do its best to help the company revive its operations within the set regulatory framework,” the regulator said. The Civil Aviation Secretary will convene a meeting with airports and airlines on Thursday to coordinate and address any emerging issues on capacity, slots and passenger convenience. On its part, Jet in a regulatory filing said late on Tuesday night
NEW DELHI: Faced with delay in payments of salaries and prospect of joblessness, employees of nowgrounded Jet Airways on Thursday blamed the Narendra Modi government and lenders for the collapse of the airline. Hundreds of airline staff from across departments gathered at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital to appeal the government to do ‘something’ to revive the carrier. “Government should have handled it better. Timely intervention by providing emergency funding could have saved the airline,” said Sonal Gupta, who works as security supervisor in the airline. Gupta has not received salaries for the last two months and is finding it tough to pay for her children’s school fees.
that State Bank of India (SBI), on behalf of the consortium of Indian lenders, told the airline that they are unable to consider its request for critical interim funding. “Since no emergency funding from the lenders or any other source is forthcoming, the airline will not be able to pay for fuel or other critical services to keep the operations going,” the airline said
Most of the agitating staff said they were asked to take leave without pay. Another employee, who works in the engineering department claimed that lenders are to be largely blamed for the crisis. “First they promised to provide Rs 1,500 crore. Then they said they would give interim funding of Rs 1,000 crore. In the end they refused to give any interim support,” he said, wishing not to be named. Most employees said their seniors have asked them to take leave without pay to pursue hobbies and spend quality time with family. “We have nothing to do now. Security and engineering departments have third parties to serve. We have nothing to do until flight starts,” an executive said. —IANS
in the filing. “Consequently, with immediate effect, Jet Airways is compelled to cancel all its international and domestic flights. The last flight will operate today (Wednesday).” As per the filing, essential services needed to support guest services and the re-commencement of the flight operations will be kept on board until further notice.

Redacted Russia probe adds to collusion controversy Democrats questions the authenticity of the summary of the report issued by Attorney-General William Barr ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
T

he release of the report of the investigation into allegations that Russia colluded with President Donald Trump’s campaign in the 2016 election that is scheduled for Thursday with some redactions will only amp the volume of debate, rather than set the controversy at rest. Acceding partially to demands by Democrats, who control the House of Representatives, Attorney-General William Barr will submit the report prepared by Special Counsel Robert Mueller after cuts to it, the Justice Department announced on Monday. Democrats have questioned the authenticity of the summary of the report issued by Barr last month and have said that they will not be convinced by the redacted version. Barr wrote that Mueller had
cleared Trump of the allegations of Russian collusion. Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said that the redactions will “only fuel suspicions” about the matter. Trump, who was convinced that the report gave him “total exoneration”, has said that he had no objection to the report’s release. He prepared for the release of the report with his own offensive on Monday. He tweeted: “The Mueller Report, which was written by 18 Angry Democrats who also happen to be Trump Haters (and Clinton Supporters), should have focused on the people who spied on my 2016 Campaign, and others who fabricated the whole Russia hoax.” The report’s release is timed for the middle of the Congressional recess this week and next and comes out on the eve of Good Friday and the Jewish observance of Passover, when legislators will be
away from Washington. It will also delay any Congressional action or concerted reaction. Legislators, politicians and the media will go through the version of the report with a fine-tooth comb on Thursday looking for anything that will show wrongdoing by Trump: If not collaboration with Moscow, the obstruction of justice allegations that the report left with no conclusive evidence. Barr has said that he will be redacting parts of the 400-page report dealing with intelligence matters, testimonies covered by secrecy laws, ongoing investigations and third parties not directly involved. Republicans have joined Democrats in demanding the a fuller version of the report. The House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee last week authorized its chairman Jerry Nadler to issue Barr a subpoena to handover the entire report.
Why India needs a strong leader Modi has his own unique way of taking inputs from the feedback from the ground; a team, a set-up that isn't just restricted to social media. He seeks opinion from the chaupals of villages JAYANTA GHOSAL, NEW DELHI
T
he great Indian political circus has had several Prime Ministers. From Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi. Each Prime Minister is unique The modus operandi is different. In 2014 when Modi entered Lutyen’s Delhi, the popular perception was that a strong man has arrived. Like the arrival of James Bond, after the World War II to dispel the darkness of the depressed British masses. Plato had preached that for a philosopher king who would also be the representative of God - that he will bring justice to mankind. Today in a democracy, we chose our leader through the process of election. There is no monarch. Nor do we have a philosopher leader like S. Radhakrishnan. We have Modi and the popular perception persists that he is a ‘strong leader’. As the Lok Sabha elections begin, the discourse on strong leadership has started again. But we need to understand that strong leader does-

n’t mean an undemocratic leader. After getting 282 seats, was Modi reluctant to listen any other opinion? I think this belief is absolutely wrong. I know his style of functioning and I can say, bluntly, that each and every day he spoke to several people on different subjects. In Lutyen’s Delhi, there is a
wrong perception that he takes his own decision - this isn’t correct. In Delhi, he begins his daily routine with briefing meetings. Principal Secretary Nripendra Mishra meets him first. Then P.K. Mishra and other PMO officials. He talks to his PS and APSs daily. Then, the PM conducts video conferences with his department
secretaries. He would also hold such conferences with state government officials. He also has his own unique way of taking inputs from the feedback from the ground; a team, a set-up that isn’t just restricted to social media like Twitter or Facebook. He seeks opinion from the chaupals of different villages. Before the declaration of the election, he conducted a review meeting. The PMO wanted to know the status of implementation of different Government of India schemes in the country’s 29 states and 7 union territories. It is true that Modi didn’t encourage the Dalal Raj of the political system. In Maharashtra, what is the reason for the deteriorating relationship between Uddhav and Modi took in the past 5 years? Was it ideological? Was it the just the BJP’s single party mindset? An arrogance of big brotherhood? The informed political circle know that the actual reason is because Shiv Sena couldn’t get the malai of Delhi’s
power. It started with the Mumbai corporation and ended in a cabinet birth for Shiv Sena. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister, Balasaheb quarreled on several issues. But the supply line for Shiv Sena was never disturbed. Vajpayee was the first NDA PM in 1998. The Vajpayee era could easily be said as the beginning of the ‘swarna yug’ of Indian economy. It was under his leadership that India went for Pokhran 2, but was he a strong leader? The Indian mythology of strong leadership would dictate that he wasn’t. In Congress, there is a working committee but only one Gandhi will take the final call. Nobody can object. Sharad Pawar and Purno Sangma raised issues and they had to leave the party. Only once Vajpayee did not disclose the decision to Advani also -- and that was the Pokhran blast and that event made Indian leadership strong! See, Advani pressurized Vajpayee to hold general election six months early. And Vajpayee accepted. He lost the election.

aintaining that its position on Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar “remains unchanged”, China this week said it is “having communication with relevant parties” on the issue of listing him as an international terrorist by the UN and that the matter is “moving in the direction of settlement”. Chinese Foreign Ministry asked the US not to force through its own resolution on the matter and rejected the report that the US, the UK and France had asked Beijing to lift the technical hold on Azhar by April 23, failing which they will
move a formal resolution for discussion, vote and passage at the UN Security Council (UNSC). “On the issue of the listing of Masood Azhar, China’s position remains unchanged. We are also having communication with relevant parties and the matter is moving towards the direction of settlement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said. Asked to elaborate further, Lu did not answer clearly. “The matter is now moving in the direction of settlement. As to the specifics for the discussion in the 1267 Committee (of the UNSC), there are clear procedures and regulations regarding UNSC and its subsidiary bodies. We think

rance will launch an international architectural competition to renovate the roofline of iconic Notre Dame cathedral after a fire gutted the oakbeamed structure and sent its 300-foot spire crashing into the nave, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said, this week. The international competition will allow us to ask the question of whether we should even recreate the spire as it was conceived by Viollet-le-Duc. Or, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, whether we should endow Notre Dame with a new spire. This is obviously a huge challenge, a historic responsibility,” Philippe said after a cabinet meeting.
Philippe said they hoped for “a new spire that is adapted to the techniques and the challenges of our era”. No estimation of the cost of rebuilding the cathedral, for which French billionaires, multi-nationals and private citizens had raised 880 million euros, had been done, he said. The government would present a bill next week to ensure “transparency and good management” during the mammoth reconstruction project, including measures to make sure all donations actually end up going to Notre Dame, he added. Ordinary French citizens will benefit from a tax break of 75 per cent on donations up to 1,000 euros. The spire was destroyed in the flames that tore through the 850-year-old Gothic building's roof.
UN owes India $38mn for peacekeeping operations ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
T
he UN owes India $30 million for its contributions to the peacekeeping operations, according to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Peacekeeping operations “face frequent cash constraints that force the organization to postpone the settlement of its obligations to troop- and police-contributing countries”, he said in a report released on Monday to the General Assembly on UN’s financial situation. He blamed the failure of member nations to pay their budget
dues on time, in particular the US, for the arrears to India and other countries that send personnel to the peacekeeping operations. At the end of the last budget year for peacekeeping 2017-18, there were arrears of almost $2 billion, he said. Without mentioning the US by name, he said: “The overall level of unpaid peacekeeping contributions is also affected by the decision of one member state to contribute at a level approximately 3 per cent below its applicable rate of assessment.” Under President Donald Trump’s budget belt-tightening,

the US, which is the largest financial contributor to the UN, has said that it would cap its dues to the peacekeeping budget at 25 per cent instead of the 28.47 per cent assessed by the UN. In January, India’s Permanent Representative
Syed Akbaruddin told the Security Council that the arrears were an “enormous burden for a TCC (Troop-Contributing Country) to bear, in addition to what they are doing in terms of providing people and personnel, equipment, etc”.

Tax filing: Indian-American Congressman offers help Ami Bera announced on his Twitter handle that his office was eager to help in whichever way it can IANS, SAN FRANCISCO
I
ndian-American Congressman Ami Bera has offered to help the residents of California’s Sacramento County who might be having issues with filing of taxes. Bera, the US Representative for California’s 7th Congressional District, has been representing the Sacramento County since 2013. He announced on his Twitter handle that his office was eager to help in whichever way it can, the American Bazaar reported.
April 15 marks the Tax Day in the US. The new federal tax law might make it more challenging for many families to figure out tax filings this year, Bera said. His office has also been educating the people about the taxpayers’ rights. Everyone that disagrees with an Internal Revenue Service decision is entitled to appeal the decision before an independent board. According to Bera’s office, even though the tax filing day is April 15, the IRS does provide a few ways in which one can apply for an extension.

Several Indian expatriates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have complained that social media platforms have been rife with misleading posts that suggest NRIs can vote online for the 2019 polls, reports The Khaleej Times.
While some believed the posts, others checked the Election Commission of India website and social media handles to only find that these were ‘fake news’.

Indian-American PAC endorses Kamala Harris for President DUBAI: An Indian-American political action committee (PAC) has endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris of Kamala Harris Indian and Jamaican descent for the US presidential race. "In such a critically important election, one that will shape policy and politics for generations to come, Indian Americans can't afford to stay on the sidelines," the Indian American Impact Fund's cofounder Raj Goyle said in a statement this week. Goyle, also a former Kansas state lawmaker, said it was for that reason that the organization chose to be "the first Indian-American or Asian-American political organization to endorse" Harris, whose mother was from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, reports the American Bazaar. "In the coming months, we look forward to mobilizing our network of resources to ensure Senator Harris secures the Democratic nomination and is elected the next President of the US," Goyle said. Harris thanked the Impact Fund for the endorsement. "This endorsement and the support of the Indian American Impact Fund and its members means so much to me," she said in a statement on Wednesday. "Together, we will fight for an America that restores the values of truth and justice and works for working people, from raising incomes to expanding health care." The Impact Fund Executive Director and former Maryland state delegate Aruna Miller said her group was "proud to endorse" Harris. —IANS
Young Indian sailor goes missing in Dubai waters IANS, ABU DHABI
A
23-year-old Indian sailor aboard a ship stranded off the coast of Dubai has been reported missing since March 9, the media reported. Jagadeeswara Rao disappeared from a vessel that was anchored 3.5 miles off Port Rashid in Dubai, said D. Ramu, the health and safety manager at a Dubai company where the sailor’s father Srinivasa Rao works as a welder. Ramu who helped the family report the matter to the authorities told Gulf News this week Jagadeeswara Rao came to the UAE as a seaman in September through Oasis Maritime Shipping Agency in Ajman on a visa sponsored by Emirates Shipping Company LLC.
“On March 9, his (the sailor’s) friend Dileep Kumar called up Srinivasa’s home in Andhra Pradesh and informed that Jagadeeswara is missing from the ship, where they worked together,”
Ramu was quoted as saying by Gulf News. Citing Dileep Kumar, Ramu said Jagadeeswara Rao was on duty on the day he disappeared. “When his reliever went to take
over the shift, he (Dileep Kumar) didn’t find Jagadeeswara on the ship’s deck where he was supposed to be working. He immediately informed ship authorities and Coast Guards.” “We only came to know about this on March 10. We collected the details from his hometown and found that the shipping agency in Ajman had received Jagadeeswara on a 96 hours’ visa and sent him to a private owner’s ship. They said they don’t know what happened later,” Ramu said. He told Gulf News that after talking with other sailors, he got to know that all of them were unpaid for several months and had to depend on nearby ships at times for food. “That day also they had visited another ship and shared the dinner. It was after dinner that
Jagadeeswara went to the deck while others slept near the captain’s cabin.” Ramu said after pursuing the issue with the agency and the ships’ owner, a complaint was registered with the Ports Police. The police said they searched for five days in the water underneath the vessel’s location but didn’t find anything about Jagadeeswara Rao. Ramu has been following the case through the Indian Consulate in Dubai as well, according to the report. The mission said it had taken up the matter with the local authorities and was pursuing it. “We had taken it up with the foreign office, the police and the Federal Transport Authority. We have been pursuing the matter. However, they have not been able to find him,” the Consulate said.

Karthik pips Pant as 2nd wicketkeeper Vijay Shankar goes to the showpiece event as No 4 batsman and Ravindra Jadeja picked as third spinner ahead of a fourth pacer in India World Cup squad IANS, NEW DELHI
D
inesh Karthik has beaten Rishabh Pant in the race to become the second wicket-keeper in the Indian team for the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales. The five wise men of Indian cricket, led by M.S.K. Prasad, met in Mumbai earlier this week and picked the 15-member squad. Vijay Shankar goes to the showpiece event as the number four batsman and Ravindra Jadeja has been picked as the third spinner ahead of a fourth pacer. KL Rahul joins in as the back-up opener. While skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, M.S. Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah picked themselves on the back of some consistent show in
Coach’s profile counts: Bhutia
recent times, there were three main areas of concern that the selectors needed to take a call on. The much-debated number four slot, whether Pant or Karthik go as the second wicket-keeper behind MS Dhoni and finally, if the team will pick a fourth pacer or an additional third spinner considering that the wickets will be on the slower side at this time of the year in England has been answered. Karthik has eclipsed Pant to the second wicket-keeper’s spot. Even though Karthik failed to do much in the 12th edition of the cash-rich league, the team management had already said they aren’t looking at it. In the bowling department too, it was a case of backing an in-form Jadeja because not only has he done well for CSK in IPL, but also, wickets are expected to be on the slower side during WC. Also, Jadeja fits in as the all-rounder who will also be looked at as the finisher.
Ishant biggest surprise in 5-man stand-by list IANS, NEW DELHI
E NEW DELHI: Everyone has had an opinion on the next person who should take over as the head coach of the Indian football team. While some have spoken about the need to have foreign coaches, others have questioned the need to look at other countries when there are enough experienced people in India. Speaking to IANS, former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has put all debates to rest and said that the profile of the coach is what matters and not the nationality. “It depends on the kind of profile the person has. Indian or foreigner isn’t the question here. It is about the kind of work he has done,” he explained, adding, “It is very difficult to say whether I prefer a foreigner or I prefer an Indian. The decision needs to be taken keeping only the experience and the caliber and nothing else.” AIFF has already expressed its inability to hire a high-profile coach owing to the financial constraints that comes with it and now, with Bhaichung focusing on the profile of the next coach, it will be interesting to see if the AIFF pays heed to one of World’s best footballers.
ven as everyone has spoken about how both Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu have been gifted a fresh lease of life by being named in Indias stand-by list for the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales, the one name that has missed all is pacer Ishant Sharma. Just like PantRayudu-Navdeep Saini, Ishant and Axar Patel are also part of the reserves named by the Indian selectors for the showpiece event. Speaking to IANS, a BCCI functionary said that the five players have been informed that they

are in the stand-by list and they should be ready to take the flight if and when needed. Interestingly, Saini will already be in England
with the team to help the batsmen prepare for the tournament. “Ishant, Axar, Pant, Rayudu and Saini are aware that they have been
named stand-by. The board has informed them about this and while four of them won’t be travelling with the team like Saini, they have been asked to be ready to jump onto the plane whenever needed. The board functionary said that his evolving as a bowler over the last year is one of the major reasons why the team believes that he can be the answer if one from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami gets injured during the World Cup. Ishant said playing county cricket last season while other Indian players were busy in IPL helped him understand the game better.

onny Bairstow and David Warner struck blistering halfcenturies to help Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) break their losing streak in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as they defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, here on Wednesday. SRH reached the 133-run target with 19 balls to spare to move to the fifth spot in the points table. Chasing the target, SRH got off to a flying start as both Warner and

Bairstow continued with their rampage and collected 66 runs in 5.4 overs before the Australian got out after scoring an explosive 25ball fifty which included 10 fours. Bairstow continued to stay at the other end and remained unbeaten

at 61. The 44-ball inning was studded with three fours and three sixes. The visitors surely missed the experience of M.S. Dhoni -- who had to sit out because of a back injury -- especially while defending the target. In Dhoni’s absence,
Suresh Raina captained the side. Earlier electing to bat, CSK openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis added 79 runs for the first wicket. Thereafter, the Chennai innings fell apart and they lost wickets in a heap. The visitors could post 132-5 in their 20 overs.

‘You have finally woken up’ The Election Commission barred Mayawati and Maneka Gandhi for 48 hours, and Adityanath and Azam Khan for 72 hours from addressing any public meeting
Poll panel bans Congress’ ‘Chowkidaar Chor Hai’ ad BHOPAL: The Election Commission in Madhya Pradesh has banned the ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ advertisement of the Congress party and ordered an end to its broadcast. The Joint Chief Election Officer on Wednesday issued a notice to all the state district officers saying that the media certification and inspection committee has cancelled the ad
certification and it should be discontinued. The Bharatiya Janata Party had earlier complained to the Chief Election Officer saying that the ad was offensive and defamatory in nature. Chief Election Officer V.L. Kantarao has directed action against the Congress, besides issuing a notice to the party.

T
he Supreme Court this week said it was content with the Election Commission (EC) action against Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan for their controversial statements violating the model code of conduct. This week, the EC barred Mayawati and Maneka Gandhi for 48 hours, and Adityanath and Azam Khan for 72 hours from
addressing any public meeting. When senior advocate C.A. Sundaram, appearing for the EC, told the court that it had acted against leaders violating the model code of conduct, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi quipped: “So, you have woken up to take action. It seems the EC has got its power back.” The CJI’s repartee came on the poll panel’s admission before the top court this week that it was almost “powerless” when it came to taking punitive measures against political leaders. The apex court also refused to consider Mayawati’s plea against the
EC gag order on her. The BSP chief’s counsel Dushyant Dave contended that she was unable to conduct important election meetings because of the order and that she had been deprived of any remedy in the matter in view of the top court’s observation on the EC order. The Bench replied if she was not happy, she could challenge the EC order with an appropriate petition before the court. The court was hearing a plea by Sharjah-based NRI Harpreet Mansukhani highlighting the rise in hate and divisive speeches in the name of religion in this year’s election campaign. The plea said such
speeches were against the spirit of the Constitution. Earlier, after Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Election Commission (EC) barred Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Mohammed Azam Khan from campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections for 48 houres and 72 hours, respectively. While Gandhi was barred for asking Muslims in Pilibhit, her constituency, to vote for her if they wanted jobs, Khan was banned for making objectionable remarks against actor-turned-politician
Jaya Prada, his BJP opponent in Rampur. Khan reportedly told a rally in Rampur on Sunday: “It took you 17 years to identify the real face of these people, but I got to know it in 17 days that they wear khaki underwear.” The EC reprimanded Khan saying his “indecent”, “derogatory and totally uncalled for” statement violated the model code of conduct and banned him from holding any public meetings, processions, rallies, road shows and interviews or public utterances in media in connection with the ongoing elections for 72 hours from 6 a.m. on April 16.

Advani, Sumitra Mahajan, Kamal Nath and Yogi Adityanath — who were elected to the Lok Sabha on five or more successive occasions since 1998 will not be seen in the next Lok Sabha. Thirteen political leaders who were MPs in 2014 had never lost a single Lok Sabha election since 1998. Now, seven of them are out of the fray while former Parliamentary Affairs Minister S. Ananth Kumar is dead. Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda, Samajwadi Party (SP) veteran Mulayam Singh, K.H. Muniyappa, Bhartruhari Mahatab and Anant Geete are the remaining five who are in the race to enter the Lok Sabha this time. 85 in the Lok Sabha in 1989, has been denied a ticket from his seat Gandhinagar in Gujarat. He represented the Gujarat capital in the Lok Sabha since 1989 except when he chose not to contest the 1996 elections over the Jain hawala diary controversy. Congress leader and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has represented the Chhindwara constituency nine times from
1980, except in 1996-98 (11th Lok Sabha) when his wife Alka Nath was elected. As he was sworn in as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister in December, his son Nakul Nath has filed his nomination from the Congress bastion. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged the Indore seat for the first time after Sumitra Mahajan was elected from there in 1989 — and remained undefeated.
However, the longest serving woman MP is not contesting this time, miffed over the delay in the announcement of her candidature. Arjun Charan Sethi, eight-time Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP from Bhadrak in Odisha who defected to the BJP recently, will not contest this time. The BJP has fielded his son Abhimanyu Sethi instead. Former Minister and seventime BJP MP from Chhattisgarh Ramesh Bais has been shown the door by the party this time — on the age factor. Ananth Kumar, who was credited with the growth of the BJP in Karnataka, passed
away in November last year. He was a six-time Lok Sabha lawmaker from Bengaluru South since 1996. The BJP has fielded Young Turk Tejasvi Surya. Another big name in the list of record-holders is Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The firebrand Hindutva leader was elected from Gorakhapur in 1998 and kept winning from there. He resigned from the Lok Sabha after the BJP took power in the state in 2017 to become the Chief Minister. The BJD has replaced five-time MP Prasanna Kumar Patasani with former Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik from the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha constituency. There are five members in the lower house with five consecutive wins who will contest this time as well. Deve Gowda is contesting from Tumakuru, hoping to enter the Lok Sabha for the sixth time. He gave up his traditional Hassan seat to his grandson Prajwal Revanna.

It was 69.62 per cent for the second phase of polling in 2014,” Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha told reporters. The two constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir — Srinagar and Udhampur — saw voting percentage of 43.4 per cent but the turn out was quite low in Srinagar at 13.43 per cent, which was below 25.7 per cent registered in 2014. However, it was higher than the by-poll figures of 2017 when the constituency registered 7.12 per cent polling. Nearly 70% polling in TN Lok Sabha polls CHENNAI: Polling concluded in 38 of 39 Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies, where by-elections were held on April 18, in Tamil Nadu. About 69.55 per cent of about 5.8 crore voters cast their vote pressing the button in the electronic voting machine (EVM) at the last count. The final poll percentage is expected to go up by about five per cent. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, 73 per cent polling was registered. A total of 822 candidates are in the fray to enter the Lok Sabha. In some places voting began a bit late owing to faulty EVMs/ Control Units/ Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. Speaking to reporters here, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said as many as 375 EVMs, 228 Control Units and 766 VVPAT machines were replaced across the state. The by-elections for the remaining four Assembly seats will be held on May 19. The results of both Parliamentary and by-elections for 22 Assembly seats will be declared on May 23, deciding the fate of the BJPled Central government and also that of the Tamil Nadu government. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the ruling AIADMK has 114 members (including the Speaker), DMK 88, Congress 8, and the IUML and Independents one each.
The Union Territory witnessed 82.1 per cent polling in 2014. The three constituencies of West Bengal that went to the polls on April 18 saw a polling percentage of 76.07 per cent. The polling percentage in the 14 constituencies in Karnataka was 61.84 per cent till 5 p.m. It was
68.68 per cent in 2014. The three constituencies of Bengaluru recorded the lowest voting percentage among the 14 seats. It was 49.75 per cent in Bangalore Central, followed by Bangalore North (50.51 per cent) and Bangalore South (54.12 per cent). In the 10 seats in Maharashtra,
the second phase voter turn was 62 per cent as compared to 62.64 per cent in 2014. The eight constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that went to the polls in the second phase recorded a poll percentage of 62.3 per cent, which is likely to increase as all the votes cast have not been taken into account. In 2014, the voting percentage was 61.87 per cent. In the five constituencies in Bihar, the voting percentage was 62.52 per cent, higher than 61.93 per cent recorded in 2014. The three constituencies in Chhattisgarh registered a voting percentage of 71 per cent. It was 74.16 per cent 2014. In Assam, where five constituencies went to the polls, the voting percentage was 73.32 per cent. In Manipur, where one seat went to the polls, the polling percentage was 74.3 per. The state witnessed 75.16 per cent voting in the corresponding phase in 2014. In Odisha, where five Lok Sabha and 35 Assembly seats went to the polls, the polling percentage was 64 per cent. It was 73.75 per cent in 2014.

Last week, the EC issued an order barring the screening of political films during the polls. Don’t give up, keep going: RDJ to Avengers fan NATALIA NINGTHOUJAM, SEOUL
I
t was back in 2008 that Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr. starred in the Iron Man — the movie that got the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) rolling. He might not return to MCU after their forthcoming film Avengers: Endgame, but all he has to say is “don’t give up, keep going”. Sporting a black suit with chic boots, RDJ hit the stage here on Monday along with his “Avengers: Endgame” co-stars Brie Larson and Jeremy Renner as well as directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige
amidst thousands of young fans dressed up as Marvel superheroes like Iron Man and Captain America. “This is nuts,” Downey Jr. said looking at his admirers. Ahead of the event, fans in Seoul were asked to write down what they would like to hear from the Avengers team. The three actors picked one message each and read out. RDJ picked: “Don’t give up. Keep going.” This made many people emotional as it comes amidst rumors about his exit from MCU. On being a team, Feige said: “Everyday feels like a team. There are moments in ‘...Endgame where

‘GOT’ fever reaches Indian politics NEW DELHI: The 2019 election season in India got a ‘Game of Thrones’ twist with the Election Commission, Press Information Bureau and Congress picking popular references from the fantasy series to connect with the people and express their views. The Press Information Bureau (PIB), the publicity arm of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, picked three major elements of the show — Tyrion Lannister, Hodor and Dragon — to create a montage and urged people to vote. It features an image of Tyrion with message “A very small man can cast a very large one” among others.
we are all together led by Robert Downey Jr. who has been the leader of the team for 10 years. Whenever he is on set, we feel like the Avengers.” Downey Jr. also joked about going around various Korean theatres in disguise after the film hits the screens later this month. “You will see me out there. I’ll be trying to steal your popcorn,” he said. But after the fans thanked the team by putting up “A” glow sticks together, he and the others got emotional. Larson, who looked no less than a Barbie in a sleeveless figurehugging blue gown with pink ruffle at the hem, got all teary-eyed. For a thank you video, thousands of fans had even submitted videos of them in the superheroes’ costumes. “Avengers: Endgame”, the 22nd film of MCU, will be the end of an era that revolved around Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America, among others.

Work on getting the perfect skin for D-Day NEW DELHI: The bridal glow is every bride’s dream. Don’t let the harsh summer come in your way, and work your way towards it by keeping yourself hydrated and moisturized, say experts. Here are some easy tips by Hardhad Malve, Head Medical, Nestle Skin Health (Cetaphil) and Satish Bhatia (M.D.), dermatologist and cutaneous surgeon, to make you glow on your big day: Hydrating is important: Hydrate plenty in summer to combat the heat. The best solution for brides is to use a hydrating lotion. dents at NTNU. The survey included questions like when they last met with a potential sexual partner, and whether they eventu-
ally ended up having sex. Researchers found women were much more likely to have sex if they thought the potential partner
was attractive. The most important factor in whether men had sex was how many sexual partners they have had previously. This could contribute to their being perceived as sexually attractive and available. “It’s really the same reason for both men and women -- the man’s sex appeal -- that decides whether they end up having sex,” Kennair said. Men who reported being the most interested in having sex reduced their signals of interest more. Women, on the other hand, might pretend to be a little more interested than they actually are. “We think this may be to keep the man’s attention a little longer,” Kennair said.

arents, take note. If your child is being bullied in secondary school, it may dramatically increase his/her chances of mental health problems and unemployment later in life, researchers have warned. The study, presented at the Royal Economic Society’s annual conference at the University of Warwick, found that being bullied in school increases the extent of mental health problems at age 25 by 40 per cent. “Our research shows that being bullied has negative impact on important long-term outcomes, especially unemployment, income and ill-health,” said co-author Emma Gorman from Britain’s Lancaster University.
“Bullying is widespread in schools and many studies document a negative relationship between bullying and educational outcomes,” Gorman added. For the study, the team analysed data on more than 7,000 students
aged 14-16. About half of the pupils involved, who were interviewed at regular intervals until they were 21, and once again at age 25, reported experiencing some type of bullying between the ages of 14 and 16.
Don’t let this summer wreak havoc to your skin & hair IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith the switch in season from a colder to a warmer climate, it is crucial to change your hair care and skincare routine. Gunjan Jain, National Educational Manager, Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals, on skincare tips: Hydration is the key: It is essential to drink plenty of water and keep hydrating ourselves as water flushes out the toxins and keeps our skin glowing. It’s wise to carry a moisturizer and home-made flavored water in your bag and keep hydrating your skin and body throughout the day. Sunblock is a must: Never step out
of the house without applying a good sunblock with the right SPF value. While most of us are aware
of the importance of sunblock, it is equally important to use the right amount of the product. Apply sun-
block at least 15-20 minutes before you step outside, and if needed keep reapplying the product. In-salon treatments: You can also go an extra mile by getting an antidullness or a de-tanning facial done once in a month to help your skin fight the summer heat in a better way. Exfoliation: It helps in removing the dead skin cells that can damage your skin texture and give you an even skin tone. Cleaning the skin regularly with a hydrating face wash and exfoliator is a must. Haircare tips by Melroy Dickson, General Manager, Education, MATRIX India. Avoid using heat tools: The summer heat tends to make your hair
sweaty and the humidity makes it frizzy. Thus, you should avoid using heat styling products like hair iron or the blow dryer in summer as they add to the heat. Instead use styling products like gels, waxes or sprays to style your hair. Use hair hydrating and frizzy controlling products: Summer also makes your hair very dry and frizzy. Using the right products with ingredients that can help nourish the dry and frizzy hair by providing it with moisture is important. Also use serums and leave-ins that further help in dealing with the frizz, protect from humidity and provide that extra boost of nourishment.

raffic pollution caused asthma among 350,000 children in India, the second largest after China, in 2015, finds a Lancet study that analysed 194 countries. The study, published in the Lancet Planetary Health, found that the largest number of cases (760,000) of traffic pollutionrelated asthma were in China. It could be because China has the second largest population of children and the third highest concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is an indicator of traffic pollution. “Our findings suggest millions of new cases of paediatric asthma could be prevented in cities around the world by reducing air pollution,” said Susan C. Anenberg, Associate Professor at the George Washington University in the US.
Globally, the study suggests there are 170 new cases of traffic pollution-related asthma per 100,000 children every year, and 13 per cent of childhood asthma cases diagnosed each year are linked to traffic pollution.
Whitening products linked to tooth decay
NEW YORK: While using teethwhitening products can make your smile brighter, they might also lead to tooth damage, warn researchers. The study, led by researchers from the Stockton University in the US, found that hydrogen peroxide -the active ingredient in whitening strips -- can damage the proteinrich dentin tissue found beneath the tooth’s protective enamel. Human teeth is made up of three layers -- the outer tooth enamel, an underlying dentin layer and connective tissue. Unlike most studies which have focused on tooth enamel, the new study focused on dentin, which makes up most of the tooth and has high levels of protein -- most of which is collagen. The study’s findings were presented during the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting held in Orlando, Florida. —IANS

A
scientist at the National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) in Mumbai — an institute under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) — says a new type of stem cell identified by her team can help restore fertility in men and women who have undergone treatment for cancer. Cancer treatment, or “oncotherapy”, that involves use of radiation and chemicals, renders patients infertile as an unwanted side effect and, while cured of cancer, they cannot beget children. Though women are born with a lifetime reserve of “oocytes” ( immature eggs), these are wiped out by oncotherapy. In males, the testes responsible for the production of sperms, stop making them following cancer treatment. Currently accepted approaches for fertility preservation require male patients to deposit their sperm in “cryo-banks” before beginning cancer treatment for later use. Similarly women, wanting to have children, must have their eggs or embryos “cryopreserved” for use after oncotherapy. “Such approaches are invasive, expensive, technically challenging and depend on assisted reproductive technologies,” reports NIRRH
“These stem cells can offer young cancer survivors options to have children without having to bank their sperms or embryos prior to oncotherapy.” (Photo: IANS)
cell biologist Deepa Bhartiya in the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Medical Research, the flagship journal of ICMR. According to the report, there is now a way out. Bhartiya says research by her team over the years led to identification of a novel population of “Very Small Embryonic-Like stem cells (VSELs)”, in testis (in males) and ovaries (in females). Being “quiescent” by nature, these primitive stem cells (VSELs) survive cancer therapy and therefore can offer young cancer survivors options to have children without having to bank their sperms or embryos prior to oncotherapy, says the report. “The VSELs have remained elusive over decades due to their small
size and presence in very few numbers,” says Bhartiya. The discovery of these unique VSELs (in testes and ovaries) that do not succumb to oncotherapy “opens up an alternative strategy to regenerate non-functional gonads and ovaries in cancer survivors”, says Bhartiya. While VSELs survive cancer treatment, their original “habitat” (or niche) however gets destroyed by oncotherapy. To make the VSELs functional, their “niche” should be re-created by transplanting “mesenchymal cells” — another type of stem cells taken from the bone marrow — into the testes, says the report. In the light of these findings, oncofertility field may undergo a sea-change, she says.

community news 13th Anuual Women’s Conference Hosted by BAPS Chicago 2
MIDWEST / EASTCOAST
FRIDAY,19 APRIL, 2019
BY STAFF WRITER BARTLETT, IL- BAPS Shri Swaminaryan Mandir, in Bartlett Illinois, hosted its 13th annual Women’s Conference. This year, the conference was themed on “Sadhana: The Purpose and the Pursuit”, which encouraged women from all over the Midwest region to lead purposeful lives and empower and inspire each other to reach their professional and spiritual goals. The conference presented an insightful look at our efforts to reach such goals, mental and circumstantial challenges we may face, and ways to overcome difficulties along the way. The conference focused on one’s endeavors while on the path of spiritual sadhana. The conference began with the first speech by Dr. Sima Patel (resident physician at University of Minnesota). Speaker Dr. Sima Patel reflected on her own sadhana and highlighted her journey through her goals and ambitions. She revealed the three crucial concepts that drive success: passion, purpose and perseverance. “Success does not rely in results, but in efforts. Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out” said Dr. Patel. Dr. Patel encouraged the audience to have self-awareness because “self-awareness gives us a moment to reflect on who we are, or where we want to be. It keeps us from going down a path that we would rather not take and allows for our progress in the right direction” she said. Furthermore, Dr. Patel touched on how growth and comfort do not co-exist. “Growth is uncomfortable, because we have never been there before. We cannot become what we want, by remaining what we are” she said. Dr. Patel gave the example of her guru, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who was appointed the president of BAPS at the age of 28. He humbly accepted this appointment, despite being unaccustomed to such status. By accepting this appointment, he grew and changed the lives of millions for the better. The conference’s second speaker, Dr. Leena Patel (PharmD, University of Illinois), focused her speech on spiritual sadhna. She said, “Spiritual sadhana makes us more prepared for all other efforts we undertake and brings inner calm to our chaotic lives.”
Fund Raising Gala Organized for Asha for Education in St. Louis
Jasmin Huda
Dr. Sangita Rangala
She revealed four practical tips to help the audience imbibe spiritual sadhana into their daily lives: practice dharma, listen to kirtans or devotional hymns, listen to katha or religious discourses, and study scriptures. Religious implementation of these tips into daily life results in one feeling calm, centered and blissful for each hour of the day. All in all, “a spiritual sadhana makes us more prepared for all other sadhanas we undertake and brings inner calm to our chaotic lives” said Dr. Patel. The conference concluded with the keynote speech given by Dr. Sangita Rangala (emergency medicine physician). Dr. Rangala shared her experience in the emergency room, which requires individuals to be still enough and control their inner energies. “When we are still, we are able to appreciate the hard work of everyone in the room. We have to meet patients mentally, emotionally and spiritually” she said. Dr. Rangala focused her speech on recognizing the self as divine. If we are committed to see the divinity in everyone and everything, we have to see it in ourselves. She emphasized, “women are the pillars of families, societies and civilization. We have no reason to apologize and no reason to feel less than, when it is just the opposite.” In this
way, Dr. Rangala invited each individual to commit to seeing the divinity in themselves. After the conference many attendees reflected on their personal and spiritual sadhanas. Attendees recognized the importance of sadhana in daily life, while others introspected on their own sadhanas and how they wished to grow in their sadhanas. This year’s conference was the first for Dr. Monali Desai. She attended this conference because, “I wanted to be open minded. I had been in a spiritual journey, but this was new. I wanted to hear what other women had to say”. Shree Gurusamy noted, “It was a fantastic effort to put together by the team. It is a good way to get youngsters involved.” The BAPS Women’s Conference was inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj, the current spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. The conference highlights the influential role of women in today’s society and empowers the younger generations by promoting a healthy dialogue. Before and after the conference, attendees seized the opportunity to network with each other and share their perspectives on the theme. Many women in the audience were inspired by the conference’s messages.
BY A STAFF WRITER ST LOUIS, MO- It was an evening to remember... we met in St. Louis on April 6th, 2019 at Spazio Westport Plaza to raise funds for projects in India supported by the St. Louis chapter of Asha for Education. Not only did we serve a great cause, but we also had fun along the way, Event started at 6.30. This led our emcee Jasmine Huda of Fox News to quip “This party is unlike the other Indian parties I have been to because this one started on time!” Jasmine Huda gave a short overview on all of the six projects supported by the St. Louis chapter whether it was working with street children in Varanasi or kids with special needs in Chennai. Spazio Restaurant provided a fine meal which was appreciated by our guests...the okra and the tiramisu especially were a big hit! Everybody enjoyed dancing to the tunes of Neeta Shahapeti and Manoj Khatod and then to the beats of DJ Rishabh as he lit up the dance floor! At the end of the night, according to Nisha Rajagopal, the St. Louis Chapter Coordinator, “We had close to 160 attendees, made $25,000, and gained even more volunteers. This is a good thing because our goal is to raise awareness and gain long term donors.” The money came from sponsorships, donations, ticket sales as well as the silent auction and 100% of our proceeds will go to Asha for Education. In the words of Tejal Patel one of the main event organizers “we worked as one team towards a single goal” Even if you missed April 6th, find us on our website to donate! Our web address is: ashanet.org.
