US ends Iran oil waiver for India US President Donald Trump has ended the waiver allowed to India to buy Iranian oil and threatened sanctions if New Delhi did not comply with the embargo IANS, NEW YORK
Prepared to deal with impact of US decision
U
S President Donald Trump has ended the waiver allowed to India to buy Iranian oil and threatened sanctions if New Delhi did not comply with the embargo. Announcing the end of waivers in Washington, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: “Trump has decided not to reissue significant reduction exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May.” “This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” she said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later told reporters the countries that did not abide by the embargo will face sanctions. “Any nation or entity interacting with Iran should do its due dili-

Israel to name Golan town after Donald Trump JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he intends to name a new settlement in the Golan Heights after US President Donald Trump to honor his recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the strategic plateau. Netanyahu said that there was a “need to express our appreciation” to the US President, the BBC reported. “All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

NEW DELHI: India has said it is “adequately prepared” to deal with the impact of the US decision to end waiver for importing oil from Iran and that it will continue to work with Washington to find “all possible ways” to protect its energy and economic security interests. “Government has noted the announcement by the US government to discontinue the Significant Reduction Exemption to all purchasers of crude oil from Iran,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said. “We are adequately prepared to deal with the impact of this decision. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has already issued a statement in this regard,” he said.
tinue buying oil to China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Italy and Greece too. Asked if there would be a winddown period for the countries to complete pending transactions after the waiver ends next week, neither Pompeo nor other US officials addressed it directly only repeating the waivers end on May 2. India was reportedly importing about 1.25 million tonnes of oil per month from Iran, about half of what it had been importing before the restrictions. Nearly 10 per cent of the 220 million tonnes crude oil India imported in 2017-18 came from Iran. Besides India, China has forthrightly criticized the US. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told reporters in Beijing: “China opposes the unilateral sanctions and so-called ‘long-arm jurisdictions’ imposed by the US.”
Harris supportive of Trump’s impeachment IANS, WASHINGTON
D
emocratic presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, has said that she supports Congress moving towards President Donald Trump’s impeachment. Harris’ comment at a CNN town hall in New Hampshire comes amid a growing debate among Democrats over whether the House should move to impeach the President in the wake of Special Counsel Robert Mueller releasing his report on Russian intervention in the 2016 election and Trump’s efforts to obstruct the investigation. “I think we have very good reason

to believe that there is an investigation that has been conducted which has produced evidence that tells us that this President and his adminis-
tration engaged in obstruction of justice,” Harris said. “I believe Congress should take the steps towards impeachment.” “I believe that we need to get rid of this President. That’s why I’m running to become president of the United States. That is part of the premise, obviously, of my plan.” For months, Democrats have not made impeachment a premier issue in their pitch to voters. But Mueller’s report has upped the ante on the issue, causing other candidates like Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro to call for impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Trump sues to block congressional subpoena of his financial records IANS, WASHINGTON
Nobody disobeys my orders: Trump
U
S President Donald Trump has sued his own accounting firm and the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee at the same time in a bid to block the committee from obtaining his financial records through a subpoena. The lawsuit, filed this week in a federal court in the District of Columbia, seeks a court order to quash a subpoena issued last week by the committee. Trump’s lawyers also are asking a federal judge to temporarily block the subpoena until the court has

had a chance to review their request, reports The Washington Post.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has contended that none of his underlings routinely defy his commands, despite numerous examples contained in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report showing aides ignoring or refusing his dictates. “Nobody disobeys my orders,” Trump said on Monday during a walkabout on the South Lawn for the annual Easter egg roll. —IANS
“There is no possible legislation at the end of this tunnel,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in their brief, talking about the Oversight Committee’s inquiry into whether the President misled his lenders by inflating his net worth. “The Oversight Committee is instead assuming the powers of the Department of Justice, investigating (dubious and partisan) allegations of illegal conduct by private individuals.” Trump’s private attorney, Jay Sekulow, issued a statement saying: “We will not allow Congressional Presidential harassment to go unanswered.”
The suit came as House Democrats issued another subpoena. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee ordered former White House counsel Donald McGahn to testify before the panel next month and hand over documents and records pertaining to federal investigations of Trump, his finances, his campaign and allegations he sought to obstruct justice. He is the first former White House employee to receive a subpoena for congressional testimony in the wake of Special Counsel Robert Mueller redacted report on the Russian interference being released to the public.

SC judge Ramana recuses from inquiry panel
An advocate has alleged a conspiracy against the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi after a former Supreme Court staffer alleged sexual harassment. (Photo: IANS)
CJI faces sexual harassment charge Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been accused of sexual harassment by a former staffer of the top court IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a major development, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a probe by a former judge of the apex court Justice A K Patnaik into allegations about conspiracy against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi who has been accused of sexual harassment by a woman. The top court also directed the Directors of the CBI and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) besides the Delhi Police Commissioner to cooperate with Justice Patnaik as and when required.
The court gave the directions during a hearing on an affidavit filed by advocate Utsav Bains, who has alleged a conspiracy against the Chief Justice after a former Supreme Court staffer alleged sexual harassment. Justice Patnaik, after completing his probe, shall file the report before the bench in a sealed cover, the top court said. It said the case will be listed after J. Patnaik files his report. The bench also said that the inquiry by Justice Patnaik shall not affect the proceedings of the Supreme Court.
The court also clarified that the probe would not prejudice the complaint made by the woman against the Chief Justice While ordering the Justice Patnaik inquiry, the court said Bains would be bound to disclose all documents. Earlier, Bains had claimed that he had sensitive information that cannot be disclosed. Senior advocate Indira Jaising,
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court judge Justice N.V. Ramana has recused from a three-judge inquiry panel constituted to probe the allegations of sexual harassment made against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi by a former staffer of the top court. The development came after the complainant wrote to the inquiry panel, objecting to Justice Ramana’s presence on the Committee. She alleged that Justice Ramana apparently shared a close friendship with the Chief Justice and that she apprehended that eventually she may not get a fair hearing. The panel is headed by Supreme Court judge Justice S.A. Bobde and includes Justice Indira Banerjee besides Justice Ramana. In her letter, the complainant said that Justice Ramana was apparently a frequent visitor to the residence of
while speaking to reporters after the order, said the Chief justice cannot be the master of the roster anymore and that his administrative and judicial work should be suspended till the sexual harassment allegations against him are looked into. She added that all the former staffers of the SC are witnesses in the case and questioned how the Chief Justice, being their ex-boss, could continue in this scenario. Earlier, during the hearing by a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, Jaising asked the court to probe the credentials of Utsav Bains, saying people who come to court, must come with clean hands. She said the bench is heavily consumed in probing the defense of the Chief Justice who is facing allegations of sexual harassment. She contended that such influence on the investigation would
the Chief Justice and it appeared to her that the bond between the two is extremely strong and apparently the Justice Gogoi treats him like a family member. She pointed out that on April 20, the day her affidavit was sent to the Supreme Court judges, Justice Ramana had dismissed her allegations while speaking in Hyderabad. According to sources familiar with the matter, a new panel will be formed by the evening by drafting in a new Supreme Court judge into the Committee to inquire into the sexual harassment complaint against the Chief Justice. The inquiry process will begin on Friday, the sources said, adding that the sudden recusal of Justice Ramana will not prejudice the process. —IANS
prejudice the complaint by the former staffer of the top court against the Chief Justice. The bench assured her that the investigation would be independent. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta intervened by recommending the formation of an SIT, but Jaising protested and requested the court to conduct a judicial inquiry. As per the Solicitor General’s suggestion regarding the formation of SIT into the matter, the bench said “we can look into this aspect of investigation.” The court also clarified that this probe would not prejudice the complaint made by the woman against the Chief Justice. The bench told Mehta that this is a very serious matter, and “we want to get to the root of this bench fixing issue, and the issue is so serious that we cannot divulge the details.”
Wife of N.D. Tiwari’s son Rohit held for murder IANS, NEW DELHI
D
elhi Police on Wednesday said that a “turbulent marriage” led to the murder of Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, the biological son of late veteran politician N.D. Tiwari, by his wife Apoorva Tiwari who was arrested earlier in the day. “Turbulent marriage was the motive for the murder,” the Additional Commissioner of the Crime Branch, Rajiv Ranjan, told reporters here. “Apoorva smothered Rohit to death... He was in an inebriated state and not in a position to resist.” The officer’s remarks came hours

after the police arrested Apoorva Tiwari from her south Delhi flat. Earlier, Ranjan told IANS: “Apoorva was arrested with the help of scientific evidence and FSL report. She confessed that she murdered her husband.” “She entered Rohit’s room on April 16 and executed the crime. She later destroyed the evidence. All this happened within one-andhalf hours,” said the officer, adding she initially tried to mislead the Crime Branch team. A resident of Defense Colony in south Delhi, Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, 40, was taken by his mother to Max Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The case was taken up by the
Crime Branch after the postmortem report suggested that Shekhar died due to smothering at around 1 a.m. Born out of wedlock, Rohit fought a six-year-long paternity battle with his late father, veteran politician N.D. Tiwari, after the latter refused to accept him as his biological son. On April 24, 2014, the Delhi High Court declared Rohit Tiwari as N.D. Tiwari’s biological son. While passing the order, the court took note of the report of N.D. Tiwari’s DNA test which proved that Rohit was indeed his son. He reportedly wanted to build a big political career for himself in Uttarakhand.

What if it’s a hung Parliament?
The general assumption is that the NDA may barely cross the finishing line or just fall short while the BJP will not get a majority of its own although it is likely to emerge as the largest party AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
C
onventional wisdom has it that the current polls will not produce a clearcut result as in 2014. The reason is that there is no definite trend for or against any party at the national level although such tendencies are there in some states such as Tamil Nadu. However, in the absence of an all-India “wave”, neither of the two main groups of protagonists - the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the parties in the “secular” camp - is expected easily to cross the half-way mark of 272 seats in the Lok Sabha. The general assumption is that the NDA may barely cross the finishing line or just fall short while the BJP will not get a majority of its own although it is likely to emerge as the largest party. In that event, there is every possibility of the BJP being given the first chance by the President to form a government. Furthermore, there will be no difficulty for it if the NDA has a majority. However, the thinness of the NDA’s lead over the other parties can pose a problem. For instance, the critics are bound to interpret the NDA’s slender majority as a virtual rejection by the voters of its

legitimacy in view of the fall in its seats from the present 336. There is a political need, therefore, for the BJP to repeat its 2014 performance if the party wants to persist with its current dominance. The scene will obviously be even worse for the BJP if the NDA is unable to get a majority and there is a hung parliament. It has been suggested that it will then have to look for potential allies to cross the magical figure of 272.
In this context, several names are already in the air, such as those of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and the rising Andhra Pradesh leader Jagan Mohan Reddy. Rao, for instance, had once taken the initiative to constitute a non-BJP, non-Congress federal front in Mamata Banerjee’s company, but the project went nowhere. Reddy is at present too focussed on his battles with Andhra Pradesh
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to pay much attention to national politics. Another party whose name has figured in the speculation is that of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a one-time ally of the BJP which is now engaged in trying to maintain its dominance in Odisha against a combative BJP which has replaced the Congress as the BJD’s main opponent in the state. At the all-India level, the BJD’s position is for maintaining
equidistance from both the BJP and the Congress. However, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is of the view that he will go with that party at the center which will show special consideration for the state. Given such possibilities, it is obvious that the BJP is bound to be far more subdued, a posture it adopted recently when concluding pre-poll seat arrangements with the Shiv Sena, the Janata Dal (United) and the Lok Janshakti Party. How will the national opposition fare in these circumstances? For a start, it will have to accept the inconvenient truth about itself that an inability to get its act together to stand united against the BJP made it lose the race. Moreover, the ego hassles among its senior leaders which scuttled the earlier talks about forming a mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) with a single opposition candidate against the BJP in every constituency will continue to help the BJP retain its hold on power. The only card which the opposition can play even in its fractured state is to assert that the 2014 outcome was an aberration caused up by two factors - the unexpected rise of Narendra Modi as a popular leader and the equally unexpected collapse of the Congress because of corruption - an old malady - and policy paralysis, a new affliction.
Hyderabad man using tech to change farmers’ lives Kumar’s mobile app provides all farming-related info and communication in Telugu on a single platform IANS, HYDERABAD
A
t a time of widespread agricultural distress caused by successive droughts, unremunerative farming and debttrapped rural economies, a young man with his mobile app is showing how change can be brought in the life of farmers at the grassroot level. In 2016, V. Naveen Kumar, who had no personal knowledge of agriculture, was so moved by the suicide of a farmer in a village in his native Warangal district of Telangana that for the next three months he ran around like a man possessed, meeting farmers to understand their problems. He interacted with agri-entrepreneurs and other stake-
holders to find if there is a way he can bring some change in the lives of the financially besieged farmers. Today, over 1.24 lakh farmers in Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh use his mobile app NaPanta to avail a host of services, all free of cost. And this MBA degree holder is satisfied that he is contributing his mite to bring some change in the way they practise agriculture. NaPanta, which was started in June 2017, saw, surprisingly, thousands of farmers download the app. The launch of the pocket-friendly Reliance Jio and the boom in use of WhatsApp brought more people on the platform. The app, which provides all farming-related information and communication in Telugu
on a single platform, is significantly reducing the time and cost of cultivation for a farmer in real time. “I am confident that if farmers follow my platform, they will be able to save 20 per cent on expenditure and get 10 per cent extra yield. We can make 30 per cent difference,” V. Naveen Kumar, Founder and Managing Director, NaPanta, told IANS. While the country has many apps to help farmers, there is no single app covering the entire gamut of agriculture activity ranging from selection of crops to locate the market offering highest price for their produce. From advisory services and weather information to market prices and e-commerce, the digital platform offers the compre-

hensive agri eco-system. The app has tools like crop expenditure (which helps farmers track their expenses in an organized manner), crop protection, weekly agro advisory, agri forum, market price, agri e-commerce, crop insurance, weather, food processing technologies, and soil testing information. A farmer can also buy or rent an agri-equipment as per the requirements of his crop cycle and can also
sell his produce for the highest price without any middleman. The app also allows farmers to access real-time and dynamic information pertaining to daily market prices of 300 agri-commodities across over 3,500 markets. Currently available in Telugu and English, NaPanta App provides complete pest and disease management details, covering 90 crops and with suggestions about 3,000 pesticide products.

The summit at the Far Eastern Federal University is the first highlevel meeting between the two countries since 2011, when Kim’s late father, Kim Jong-il, met then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in eastern Siberia, reports CNN. Speaking before the North Korean and Russian delegations, Putin said that he believed Kim’s visit would help “our bilateral relations and will help us to understand the ways we can help to settle the situation on the Korean Peninsula, what can be done together, what Russia can do to support the posi-

tive processes that are taking their place now. “We welcome your efforts on developing inter-Korean dialogue and your efforts on normalising
the US-North Korean relations... In terms of bilateral agenda, we need to achieve a lot to develop trade and economic ties and humanitarian ties.”
Putin said he had “thorough one-on-one talks about the history of relations between our countries, about today and perspectives of development of our bilateral rela-
tions”. In response, Kim Jong-un described his visit to Russia as “a great joy”. “I would like to offer again a sincere gratitude to Mr. President for making time in his busy schedule and come thousands of miles from the capital city of Moscow to here to give us time for a great conversation.” He said this visit was not only to meet Putin in person, but also “to exchange our mutual views on the Korean Peninsula”. Kim Jong-un said that it was “to exchange opinions on the issues like growing and developing our two nation’s traditional relationship into one that is more solid and constructive according to the demand of the new century”. The summit comes at a time when talks between Washington and Pyongyang have been stalled following the failure of a summit in Hanoi in February between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump. Putin is the sixth world leader to meet Kim Jong-un since he took control of North Korea in 2011.
US-China trade talks on India to skip China’s B&R forum

WASHINGTON: Negotiators from the US and China will meet in Beijing on April 30 for the next round of trade talks, the White House has said. The White House in a statement this week said the US delegation led by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will hold parleys with the Chinese next week. The leader of the Chinese delegation, Vice Premier Liu He, will then travel to Washington for more discussions starting on May 8, according to the statement cited by Efe news. “The subjects of next week’s discussions will cover trade issues including intellectual property, forced technology transfer, non-tariff barriers, agriculture, services, purchases, and enforcement,” it said. The two sides are seeking to end
a bitter trade war that began last year as a result of US President Donald Trump’s protectionist agenda and his criticism of China’s trade policies. The negotiators have held several rounds of talks since December in a bid to reach an agreement as the dispute has heavily cost the two largest economies in the world and jolted financial markets. As the trade war protracted, Trump, after a round of parleys in February, said Washington was “doing very well in trade talks with China”. He has demanded that a new trade agreement with China “must include real, structural change to end unfair trade practices, reduce our chronic trade deficit and protect American jobs”. The US President warned late last year that, if no agreement was reached before March 1 he would raise the current tariff rate of 10 per cent to 25 per cent on Chinese imports amounting to $200 billion. The deadline was eventually extended and the talks have become more frequent. Since December, Beijing has taken goodwill measures, such as the lowering of tariffs on imported US vehicles, the resumption of the purchase of soybeans and the approval of a bill to prohibit forced transfer of technology. —IANS

A
total of 37 countries minus India on Thursday gathered at China’s second edition of the Belt and Road forum on Thursday, a three-day grand event on the world’s largest connectivity project. The Belt and Road Initiative -- a trillion-dollar project floated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 -- aims to connect Asia, Africa and Europe through a network of highways, rail lines, ports and sea-lanes. The sheer vastness of the project and the money involved in it have caused much awe among many as well as consternation in some countries that see the initiative as China’s tool to increase its geopolitical influence. Under the project, China has poured billions of dollars in over 60 partner countries where it’s building vast infrastructure that range from seaports to railway lines. The reports about many partner countries like Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Pakistan being under the burden of onerous Chinese loans under the projects have raised concerns about Beijing’s intent to create “debt traps”. China will seek to dispel this narrative at the three-day event of the year where heads of 37 countries - up from 29 from at the

launch of the summit in 2017 and representatives of over 100 international organisations will be present. While Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan will be among the heads of states, India will give a miss to the forum like the last time in 2017. India opposes the multi-billion dollar artery of the Belt and Road - China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) -- that cuts through Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. The corridor connects the Chinese city of Kashgar with Pakistan’s Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea. New Delhi says it cannot be the part of a project that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and
territorial integrity. India’s non approval of the corridor has become a sticky point in its relations with China. Beijing maintains that the project is purely economic in nature and won’t impact its neutral stance on the Kashmir issue. Last week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sought to allay New Delhi’s concerns again and said the differences over the project should not become a dispute. The US and its allies have long seen China’s Belt and Road project as a strategy to spread its political influence in the world. They have questioned about the “lack of transparency” in Chinese funding in the projects and usurious loans to countries.

ulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu US Congresswoman and Democratic 2020 presidential candidate, has vastly outraised Senator Kamala Harris of Indian and Jamaican descent among IndianAmerican donors in the 2020 presidential fundraising derby so far. Gabbard, who is a Hindu American but not Indian-American, has raised more than $237,000, from the community. In comparison, Harris, daughter of an Indian American mother and Jamaican American father, has so far raised only $72,606

Neurologist Anil Prasad, 62, of Mandeville, Louisiana, was charged with one count of prescribing controlled substances outside the course of professional practice for no legitimate purpose and one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, according to US Attorney Peter G. Strasser.
Indian sentenced in US for call centre fraud NEW YORK: A federal judge in Florida has sentenced an Indian citizen to eight years and six months in prison for his involvement in an India-based call centre scam, according to the US Justice Department. At his sentencing, Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington also ordered Hemalkumar Shah, 27, to pay $80,000. He had been convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft relating to his participation in the Indian call center scam after he admitted his guilt in January. from the community, according to AAPI Data, which publishes data and policy research on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In a clear sign that Harris, one of the strongest contenders in the crowded 2020 Democratic field, has not been fully embraced by the community, the Senator even trails New Jersey’s Corey Booker among Indian-Americans, the American Bazaar reported. Booker has raised more than $131,000 from Indian Americans. A big reason for that is New Jersey is home to nearly 370,000 Indian Americans. But Harris’ home state of California has the largest Indian American
population in the country - more than 712,000. Yet, her campaign hasn’t received traction among Indian American campaign donors, the AAPI Data research reveals. The Senator, however, received an important endorsement when the influential Indian-American Impact Fund announced that it is backing her earlier this week. Harris, unlike Gabbard, has not made any attempts to reach out to the Indian-American community so far, even though she has repeatedly cited her Indian identity and her mother’s influence on her. On the other hand, Gabbard, an Iraq war veteran and the first Hindu

We’ve balanced team for World Cup: Dravid World Cup will probably be a much high scoring one and India is well equipped for that, says former player IANS, NEW DELHI
F
ormer skipper Rahul Dravid reckons India’s recent 2-3 loss to Australia in a home ODI series will not have much impact in the men in blue’s 2019 World Cup campaign and their good show in the past few years has made them the strong title contenders. After taking a 2-0 lead in a fivematch ODI rubber last month, India faltered and were defeated in the rest three matches and lost the series. “In the last 30 months, India has been playing really well, and the loss, much to the credit of the way Australia played, came at the

back end of a very busy series,” Dravid was quoted as saying by The Times of India. “We have the right combination for the World Cup. If India wins the World Cup, we will not be worrying about who won 2-3 or 32. There will be an odd series that India will lose. But the (ICC) rankings prove that India is there and should win the World Cup to become No. 1,” he said. When asked what he thinks of the Indian squad for the showpiece event as stumper Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu were not included in the team, Dravid termed the side as ‘well-balanced’. “India has a very good, balanced
team for this World Cup. They have a lot of combinations, lot of options. It is a question of them performing in the tournament. You can always argue one or two cases, one or two names,” the 46year-old opined. Dravid also felt that unlike the previous times, the wickets have changed in England and the upcoming tournament will witness high-scoring games. “This World Cup will probably be a much high scoring one, and India is well equipped for that. English conditions have actually changed, especially for ODIs. We were there last year for an ‘A’ series, and the scores were really high,

While the senior campaigners were named in the squad, Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine were the notable absentees. Jason Holder has been expectedly named the skipper of the team which has the perfect mix of youth and experience. Mamata gifts me ‘kurtas’ In a candid conversation with actor Akshay Kumar, Narendra Modi says Mamata herself selects kurtas and gifts them to him every year
Might send gifts but won’t give vote, replies Mamata Sreerampore/ Krishnanagar (West Bengal): In an apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s revelation that Mamata Banerjee sends him kurtas and sweets every year, the West Bengal Chief Minister on Wednesday said that she might send gifts and sweets to people on occasions but will not give them her vote. “I send rosogollas to people. I do send them gifts during pujas and offer tea, but will not give (them) a single vote,” Banerjee said without naming the Prime Minister, during an election rally, here in the Hoogly district. In her rally, Banerjee accused Modi of converting huge amount of black money into white through demonetisation and spending it to purchase votes.

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi revealed on Wednesday that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, otherwise a vocal Modi critic, herself selects kurtas and gifts them to him every year. In a candid conversation with actor Akshay Kumar, Modi added that the revelation might harm him in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. He said that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina used to send him special sweets every year from Dhaka. “When Mamata Didi came to know about it, she also started sending me Bengali sweets
on one or two occasions every year.” The Prime Minister said that he had a good relations with his political opponents like senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. The “candid and completely non-political” interview was telecast a day after the third phase of the staggered Lok Sabha elections. Hours before its telecast, Akshay Kumar announced on Twitter that he would soon be engaging in a chat to help viewers “discover” some interesting facts about Prime Minister Modi. To Kumar’s question whether he had donated the entire amount he got as salary during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister before he
moved to Delhi, Modi said: “This is not the complete truth. I wanted to do so, but on the advice of some officials under me, I only contributed Rs 21 lakh. I asked the officials to spend the money on the education of the children of junior employees in the Secretariat.” Asked if he ever felt angry, Modi said: “If I said that I don’t get angry, people would be surprised. “Anger is a part of life of every human being. When I was about 18-20 years old, I was told that bad habits are hurdles in personal growth. My anger was one such
bad habit. I was a Chief Minister for a long time. Now I am the Prime Minister, but there was not single occasion when I got angry on anyone. “I am strict, but I don’t believe in humiliating others. I encourage people. I lend them a helping hand... I learn and also teach. I make a team. There may be anger inside me but I don’t express it,” the Prime Minister told the actor at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence in New Delhi.
“Modi babu, you forcibly imposed demonetisation on people in order to convert black money into white and now spend them during elections to purchase votes. But your efforts will go in vain in Bengal,” she said. Later, in a rally at Krishnanagar in Nadia, she alleged the BJP was trying to buy votes by distributing gifts. You (Modi) will be thrown out after the elections. Our government will prove what a big scam demonetisation was,” she said. Banerjee also said the BJP “goons have been trying” to create disturbances and unleash terror in the state though Trinamool Congress activists and supporters and her government are “committed to maintain peace and harmony”. —IANS
Asked if he does not want to live with his family, Modi said he left his home at a very young age and so his life totally detached with his family. Modi also rubbished his “strict image”. “If anybody says that I force people to work, he hasn’t fully understood me. It is true that people connected with me have to work more, but I never force anyone. I develop a work culture because I also work very hard,” he said.

amajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said that people have coined a new name for the BJP as the ‘Bhagti Janata Party’ as Prime Minister Narendra Modi refuses to hold a press conference. “Have you heard anything new? The people have heard that the BJP’s new name is ‘Bhagti Janata Party’ because the Prime Minister avoids to hold a press conference while his leaders run away from the questions of the media journalists and their workers run away after seeing the people as they question them about the Rs 15 lakh and employment,” Yadav said in a tweet. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s remarks comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party
clarified that Modi was not going to hold any press conference in Varanasi. On Wednesday, the BJP described a letter that was doing the rounds on social media about Modi holding a press conference in the temple town as fake. The fresh attack comes the same day when Modiwill hold a road show in the Varanasi, ahead of filing his nomination papers on Friday. Modi, who is re-contesting from the Varanasi parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, had won the 2014 elections from the seat by defeating Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Ajay Rai of the Congress. The high-profile seat will go to the polls on May 19 in the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

AHMEDABAD: Over 62 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah’s home state Gujarat, clocking only one per cent less than the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when the ruling party walked away with all 26 seats. As polling, which was peaceful across all the constituencies, drew to a close with both major political parties in Gujarat expressing confidence of a good performance. There were 4.5 crore eligible voters in the state, including 11 lakh first-time voters. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said: “Voting has been on expected lines comparable to 2014 and this reflects the BJP will bag all 26 seats again in
Gujarat.” Congress spokesperson Himanshu Thakkar said, “The polling clearly shows the big talk of nationalism and development by the BJP has not worked. You can see it, there has been good percentage of voting in rural and tribal areas, while the urban areas remained apathetic.” The highest turnout of 74.09 per cent was reported from the tribal seat of Valsad in South Gujarat and lowest of 55.73 per cent was from the Amreli constituency. Gandhinagar, where BJP President Amit Shah was contesting, the turnout was 64.87 per cent, nearly one per cent less than in 2014 when BJP patriarch L.K. Advani had won with a margin of 4.82 lakh votes.
The BJP leader’s popularity had peaked in the first week of March crossing the 60 per cent mark and he continues to dominate the approval rating charts. Rahul
Gandhi’s numbers have remained almost static as he has maintained his position of being a distant second. No other leader received any sig-
nificant traction from the voters. In states like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, Modi was the first choice of over 70 per cent respondents. Narendra Modi’s popularity peaked on March 6 when 62.3 per cent respondents named him as the first choice to become PM. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi’s best number was 26.04 per cent on January 1. Since then it has been on a constant decline as his approval ratings have shown no signs of improving till the third phase.

et in the pre-Independence era, in Husnabad in undivided India, director Abhishek Verman’s Kalank is a saga of love, where all the six pivotal characters crave for love and yet, have to let go of it. Roop (Alia Bhatt) agrees to marry Dev Chowdhary (Aditya Roy Kapur) whose wife, Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) is terminally ill and wants to see her husband settled before she dies. While in a loveless marriage which is a mere compromise, to ensure the wellbeing of her poor family, Roop falls in love with Ironsmith Zafar (Varun Dhawan), an illegitimate Muslim boy, whom she encounters daily in Hira Mandi, a notorious area, where she goes to learn music from a courtesan named Bahaar Begum (Madhuri Dixit). viewing experience. There is sufficient drama but the scenes appear perfect in silos, almost insular with no connection with the next. The film, except for the climax, fails to engage and involve you. The pathos in the climax with each one losing their love is palpable.
The first half establishes the characters and their lives and how those are intertwined, it drags and there are abundant uncalled for scenes like the lengthy bull-fight with Zafar or Bahaar Begum’s dance. The second half makes a greater emotional impact, but the unnecessary length of the film wears you off. The film is a visual treat with metaphorical edits and picture-perfect frames.

National Film Awards after LS elections NEW DELHI: The winners of the 66th National Film Awards will be declared after the 2019 general elections. The awards have been pushed back this year as “elections to the 17th Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies of four states are underway and the awards also include one for the most film friendly state”. “Since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force, which facilitates level playing field to all political parties and the candidates and inter alia seeks to ensure that the power of media is not used in such a manner which affects the general conduct and level playing field during the election process, it has been decided to declare awards after the election process is over and the MCC concludes,” PIB stated.

Violent relationship ups mental disorder risk WASHINGTON: Women, please take note. If you are in a violent relationship you may be at an increased risk of suffering from mental disorders, suggests a new study. The study, published in Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders journal, indicates that the unpredictable violence not only causes physical injuries to women but also leaves the victims at a higher risk of suffering from mental disorders. “We expect severity and frequency to be the major driver to patient outcomes, but in some cases it isn’t,” said David Katerndahl, Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, US. “The nonlinearity, or unpredictability, of the violence is much more of a

University of South Florida (USF) researchers, in a paper published in the journal Sleep Health, noted that workers are more likely to have poor judgment and fall “off-task” the next day if they lose even minimal on sleep. “Findings from this study provide empirical evidence for why workplaces need to make more efforts to promote their employees’ sleep,” said lead author Soomi Lee, assistant professor from the School of Aging Studies at the university. minor explosion occurred on Thursday in the Sri Lankan capital’s outskirts even as security forces continued a search for accomplices of suicide bombers who on Easter Sunday killed and injured hundreds. The government also banned the use of all drones and unmanned aircraft within the Sri Lankan airspace with effect from Thursday and also kept its new visa-on-arrival programme, which was to be implemented from May 1, on hold due to the security situation in the island nation. “Investigations have revealed foreign links to the attacks and we do not want this visa-on-arrival
facility to be abused,” Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga said. Tourism was one of the worst hit industries following the deadly blasts on Sunday in three Sri Lankan cities, primarily in and around Colombo. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deaths of 359 people and injuries to over 500 but Colombo has blamed a local Muslim group, the National Thowheed Jamath (NJT). At least 40 foreign nationals, including 10 Indians, were among those killed in the bombings. The Thursday explosion took place at around 9 a.m. in a garbage dump behind the Magistrate’s Court in Pugoda, 36 km from
Colombo, reported Xinhua news agency. After the blast, police have advised the general public not to panic, saying the security forces were conducting search operations in the area and also across the island nation, said the Daily Mirror. In an indication that all was not well in Sri Lanka, Israel’s CounterTerrorism Bureau raised the threat level to indicate a “high concrete” mark and advised travellers to leave the island and avoid visiting it in the near future. The elevated alert level came after consultations with security and Foreign Ministry officers, CNN quoted the Counter-Terrorism Bureau as saying. Although four days have passed
since the bloodbath, Sri Lanka remains on the edge. Schools and colleges remain shut and a general sense of insecurity prevails. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told CNN that some attackers responsible for the Easter Sunday bombings were being monitored by the intelligence services but there was not “sufficient” evidence to put them in custody before the attacks. He reiterated that the attackers were middle- and upper-middle class and had been educated abroad. He added that the profile of the suspected bombers was “surprising”. Police are holding the wealthy father of two of the suicide bombers on suspicion of aiding and abetting his sons to carry out
Easter Sunday attacks. Mohamed Yusuf Ibrahim, a spice moghul, was arrested on Sunday following attacks at hotels and churches. His adult sons, Imsath Ahmed Ibrahim and Ilham Ahmed Ibrahim, blew themselves up in two different attacks earlier that day, reported CNN. Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said that officers Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) had raided five safe houses in the country. More than 70 suspects have been taken into custody on a range of charges. Of those arrested, four suspects were female, and all are Muslims. None of them is a foreigner.

Sri Lanka bomber had visa in Australia: Aussie PM CANBERRA: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison (in Picture) has confirmed that one of the suicide bombers involved in the Sri Lankan bombings spent time in Australia, Nine News Australia said on Thursday. The Prime Minister has said the man was not granted another visa after leaving Australia more than six years ago, the Daily Mirror reported. “I can confirm that the suicide bomber had been in Australia. They departed in early 2013. That individual had been here on a student and a graduate skilled visa,” Morrison told reporters in Townsville.
