Trump condemns white supremacy

P

resident Donald Trump has said that the US must condemn bigotry, racism and white supremacy, following two mass shootings over the weekend that killed 29 people. Last week, a gunman killed 20 people at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, in what officials said appeared to be a racially-motivated hate crime. Later, another gunman in Dayton, Ohio, killed nine people. Dozens were also wounded in both shootings. Addressing the nation on Monday, Trump called the El Paso gunman a “wicked man” and urged the country to condemn white supremacy. “The shooter in El Paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, big-

otry and white supremacy.” The President, however, stopped short of acknowledging his own divisive and racist rhetoric. Officials said the El Paso shooter may face hate crime charges after the police found a racist, anti-

immigrant document they believe was written by the 21-year-old white male suspect. The four-page document posted online espoused white nationalist and racist views. It railed against immigrants and Hispanics, blam-

ing immigrants and first-generation Americans for taking away jobs and for the blending of cultures in the US. Trump called the weekend shooting attacks “domestic terrorism,” adding that he had called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation to devote further resources to preventing further attacks. He said the Internet “provided a dangerous avenue to radicalize disturbed minds and perform demented acts”. “We must shine a light on the dark recesses of the internet and stop mass murderers before they start,” he added. Trump said during his White House statement that he was “directing the Department of Justice to propose legislation ensuring that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty.”

BRIEFS Reject leaders who fuel hatred: Obama WASHINGTON: Former US President Barack Obama has called on Americans to reject language from any of their leaders that feeds hatred Barack Obama or normalizes racism. Obama said in a statement on Monday: “We should soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments; leaders who demonise those who don’t look like us, or suggest that other people, including immigrants, threaten our way of life, or refer to other people as sub-human, or imply that America belongs to just one certain type of people,” the BBC reported.

Economic embargo on Venezuela WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration has imposed a total economic embargo on Venezuela, in an effort to step up pressure against the South American country. Trump said that he would issue an executive order freezing all assets of the Venezuelan government and linked entities and banning most economic transactions with them, allowing exemptions only for the provision of humanitarian aid and for official business conducted by the federal government, reports Efe news. “I have determined that it is necessary to block the property of the Government of Venezuela in light of the continued usurpation of power by the illegitimate Nicolas Maduro regime. —IANS

Yuan’s plunge: US accuses China of currency manipulation IANS, WASHINGTON

China halts purchases of US agricultural products

U

S President Donald Trump has accused China of engaging in “currency manipulation” after the yuan broke below the level of seven yuan per dollar, a situation that has not occurred since 2008, and he urged the Federal Reserve to take measures to counter Beijing’s move. “China dropped the price of their currency to an almost a historic low. It’s called ‘currency manipulation.’ Are you listening Federal Reserve? This is a major violation which will greatly weaken China over time,” Trump said a series of Twitter posts. my with significant interest rate cuts and called the announcement last week by the American central bank to cut interest rates by 0.25 per cent inadequate. A spokesman with the People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank.

BEIJING: China has announced that its state-owned companies have halted their purchases of agricultural goods from the US in response to Washington’s ramping up of tariffs on Chinese imports, a move that will further escalate the ongoing trade war between the two economic giants. In a statement posted on its website earlier this week, China’s Commerce Minister said that the US’ decision to slap an additional 10 pe

rcent of tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese products, effective September 1, was a “grave violation” of the agreements reached at the June 29 meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, reports Efe news. China is one of the largest buyers of American agriculture, making this decision a serious blow to US farmers and traders. —IANS

Gold hits life-time high of Rs 38,070 per 10 gram MUMBAI: Gold prices on Wednesday surpassed the Rs 38,000 per 10 gram mark for the first time ever, amid heightened trade tension between US and China and marked slowdown in global economic activity. Gold has seen a sharp surge in demand as a safe haven asset, ever since the US Federal Reserve’s statement that the first rate cut since 2008 was not the beginning of a rate cut cycle. At the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), the October contract of gold

was trading at Rs 37,956 per 10 gram before it hit a life time high of Rs 38,070. Prices of the precious metal surged after the US last week announced fresh tariffs on Chinese products. Later, China decided not to buy US agricultural products as a response to this escalation. On Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) lowered the economy’s projection of real GDP growth to 6.9 per cent for 2019-20 from 7 per cent earlier.

Dream of Sardar fulfilled: Modi

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that the dream of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B.R. Ambedkar, Syama Prasad Mookerjee and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapyee has been fulfilled by abrogating the Constitution’s Article 370, giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir. In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister said: “Like one family, one nation - we have taken a historic decision on Jammu and Kashmir. Such a system, due to which the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were deprived of many rights, which was a major obstacle in their development, have now gone away. “The dream of Sardar Patel, Baba Ambedkar, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and Atal Bihari Vajpayee and crores of patriots have been

Sitharaman assures industry of steps to revive economy NEW DELHI: Following a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, India Inc is hopeful of receiving a stimulus from the Finance Ministry aimed at helping revive demand and consumption. The government is holding a series of consultations with industry to ascertain the key causes of the current slowdown and understand ways to fix the problem. The meeting took place amidst core sector growth slowing down to a 0.2 per cent in June. The eight core industries - coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity - had grown 7.8 per cent in June 2018. Experts say, this performance clearly points to stagnation having set in Indian industry. Industry has unanimously told the Finance Minister that credit availability is currently the key constraint and banks should be pressurized for better transmission of the central bank’s interest rate cuts to make available funds to industry at lower cost. The liquidity crunch has been exacerbated by funds drying up for the non-banking finance company (NBFC) sector, while policy intervention in the form of a package is a must to revive industry, leading corporates told media persons here follow-

ing the meeting with Sitharaman. Tata Steel Chief Executive T.V. Narendran said the Finance Minister heard out the corporate honchos about a revival package being the need of the hour. JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said NBFCs, the steel and finance sectors were discussed with the Finance Minister. “We discussed issues in NBFCs, steel and finance sectors with the Finance Minister. Government will announced the steps to revive the industry very soon”, he said. Jindal also said there were discussions on credit availability. According to him, Sitharaman assured that a process would be put in place for transmitting the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) rate cuts to industry, which was a key point of Thursday’s discussion. —IANS

he Nirmohi Akhara, one of the main parties in the Ayodhya dispute, told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that they had lost the documents establishing their possession of the Ram Janmabhoomi site in a dacoity in 1982. The submission by the Akhara came on the second day of day-today hearing in Ayodhya dispute as the constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked its counsel: “Do you have oral or documentary proof or revenue records of the possession of the Ram Janmabhoomi before the attachment?” In response, counsel Sushil Jain informed the bench that a dacoity took place in 1982 and they lost all the records, proving their ownership, in this incident. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Gogoi, started daily hearing of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case from Tuesday and on the very first day, the Akhara laid full claim to the disputed 2.77 acre core area, saying

The constitution bench had sought to know what were the grounds on which the Akhara’s claims had been opposed. “We have been fighting for this for so long because it is an issue of emotions for us,” the counsel had submitted.

few hours before she collapsed and died, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted her thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for revoking Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir. “Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.” That was her last communication on the social media platform on which she had over 13 million followers. She was active on tweeting about major happenings, though she decided against contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections or on joining the Narendra Modi 2.0 government due to health reasons. Sushma, who died aged 67, tweeted her condolences on Congress leader Sheila Dikshit’s death on July 20, writing that though they were opponents in politics, but were friends in personal life. Sushma, who brought her innate grace and charm into her work, was not cowed by twitter trolls either. Though she was overshadowed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who undertook the major trips and diplomatic dealings during her tenure as External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj did not retire into the shadows. She made her mark in her own way – connecting with the diaspora far and wide, and reaching out to help them. She would respond to every appeal for assistance, and make

In this way she gave the human touch to the Ministry of External Affairs, and won millions of admirers across the world, including many in Pakistan. As Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha, Sushma was a formidable and compelling speaker. She would attack the ruling Congress-led UPA government without pulling any punches. Sushma, who was always attired in wide-bordered saris and donned a trademark big red bindi and sindoor, had carved a niche in the BJP through effective presentation of her views both inside and outside Parliament. Married to Swaraj Kaushal, a

former Mizoram Governor, Sushma had contested against Sonia in Bellary (Karnataka) during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. While Gandhi polled 51.7 per cent of the vote, Sushma was not too far behind with 44.7 per cent. Though she lost the polls, Sushma moved up the party ladder. Born on February 14, 1952 at Ambala Cantonment, Sushma earned a B.A. degree in political science. She studied LL.B. in Panjab University, Chandigarh.

She married Swaraj Kaushal on July 13, 1975, during the time of the Emergency. An advocate by profession, she began her political career as a student leader in the 1970s, organizing protests against Indira Gandhi’s government. She twice became MLA from Haryana during 1977-1982 and 1987-1990, and once from Delhi in 1998. Sushma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980.

Sushma Swaraj, 67, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest earlier this week. Sushma Swaraj became the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998, albeit for a short period. Sushma Swaraj (BJP) and Dikshit (Congress) were the only two women to rule the national capital.

NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday condoled the death of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, saying she was a great parliamentarian and an exceptionally talented Minister. “I was shocked to hear about the sudden demise of Sushma Swaraj. I have fond memories of my association with her when she was Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,” the former Prime Minister said in a statement here. “She was a leader of high esteem who was highly respected by everybody irrespective of party lines. She was a great parliamentarian and exceptionally talented Minister of the Union Government,” he said.

NEW DELHI: The demise of former External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is not only being mourned by political leaders in India but also by the diplomats of other countries. Several envoys visited her residence to pay her their tributes. Russian envoy Nikolay Kudashev said: “Sushma Swaraj was well known in Russia as a steadfast defender and promoter of the international interests of India. “She was a sincere and true friend of Russia. She will always dwell in our hearts and memories. May her soul rest in peace”. Israeli Ambassador Ron Malka called Swaraj a great friend of Israel. —IANS

Dabholkar to head global physics centre Dabholkar is the nephew of the well-known rationalist Narendra Dabholkar IANS, PUNE

R

enowned Indian scientist Atish Shripad Dabholkar will take over as the new Director of the prestigious Abdul Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy’s Trieste, his cousin Hamid Dabholkar said here on August 8. The Kolhapur-born Dabholkar, 55, is the nephew of the well-known rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune on August 20, 2013. “We all, including his family members in Satara, are extremely proud that Atish has made it to this important position,” Hamid Dabholkar told IANS from Pune. “The ICTP is pleased to announce the appointment of Atish Dabholkar, a theoretical physicist from India, as its next Director! US activist remembers Sushma Swaraj for Sherin Mathews case WASHINGTON: A US child abuse activist has fondly remembered the late Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who died earlier this week, as a woman with an “iron will” and also for her help and being very proactive in the case involving the 2017 death of three-year-old Indian girl Sherin Mathews. Sherin Mathews was a 3-year-old adopted girl from India who was found dead in a culvert near her home in Richardson, Texas in 2017, the American Bazaar reported. Her father Wesley Mathews has been charged in the case and is currently serving a life sentence in the US. Shanna Poteet, a Texas-based child abuse activist, said on Wednesday: “It was Sushma Swaraj who defended Sherin (Mathews) and began an investigation in India into her death. Sushma Swaraj was also the one who was involved in revoking Wesley and Sini Mathews NRI cards...” The activist who has been

involved in the case since the first day, terms Sushma Swaraj’s role in the case as important and inestimable. “Sherin’s death attracted the attention of the Indian government and then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took keen interest in the case and also instructed the Indian mission in Houston to make sure that the Indian toddler received justice.” She added that back in 2017, it was Sushma Swaraj who requested the Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi to probe Sherin’s adoption process. holkar will take over his new assignment in November. “It’s a great honor and responsibility to be chosen as ICTP’s next Director. It is a dynamic organisation with a very high level of

research and a unique global mission for international cooperation through science,” Dabholkar said in his initial reaction to his appointment. The ICTP, founded in 1964 by Pakistani Nobel Prize laureate Abdus Salam, is an international research institute for physical and mathematical sciences operating under an agreement with the Italian government, the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It was envisioned as an international hub for excellence in science and as an anchor for building scientific capacity and a scientific culture around the globe. “This vision remains valid today, more than 55 years since its founding, but requires flexibility to meet changing realities and priorities,” said Dabholkar.

Born in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, Dabholkar is a graduate of IIT-Kanpur and later earned his doctorate in Theoretical Physics from Princeton University, besides other post-doctoral and research positions at Rutgers University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology.Till 2010, he served as Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai besides being a Visiting Scientist at CERN and a Visiting Professor at Stanford University. Earning fame for his research on String Theory and Quantum Black Holes, including investigations that built on Salam’s 1979 Nobel Prizewinning work on Electroweak Unification, Dabholkar joined the ICTP in 2014 on secondment from Sorbonne University and the National Centre for Scientific Research where he was a research director since 2007.

Two friends from India win big in UAE raffle IANS, DUBAI

T

wo Indian friends, one a former Dubai resident who left the country for good and the other currently based in Abu Dhabi, has won big in a raffle in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Both Vilas Rikkala and Ravi Masipeddi hail from the Nizamabad district in India's Telangana state. They have been purchasing tickets for a long time and finally got lucky with the one bought on July 29, the Khaleej Times reported on

Sunday. The prize amount of the Big Ticket Abu Dhabi raffle was 15 million dirhams ($4 million). Rikkala, who is back in India, is finding it difficult to come to terms with this unexpected windfall. "I don't have words to describe it. This is like a dream. I worked in a Dubai firm for 4-5 years and then left. And now I have this jackpot. This will take some time to sink in," Rikkala told the Khaleej Times over the phone. Masipeddi, who works in Abu Dhabi, said: "I cannot remember how many years have been buying

this... Finally we have won. We have pooled 50 per cent of money into the ticket..." The list of winners also included five other Indians. Big Ticket is the largest and longest running monthly raffle draw for cash prizes and luxury cars in Abu Dhabi.

“My pageant career all started to happen while I was in the middle of studying at medical school - it took a lot of convincing for me to do it But eventually I decided to do it to balance out my studying and give me a break.” Mukherjee was born in India. Her family relocated to the UK when she was nine. She went onto complete two bachelor degrees: one in medical sciences and one in medicine and surgery from the University of Nottingham. As winner of Miss England, she will be entered into the Miss World contest and will also bag a holiday to Mauritius.

Bombing in Kabul kills 18

The attack coincides with the eighth round of ongoing peace talks between the US and representatives of the Taliban insurgency in Qatar IANS, KABUL

A

t least 18 people were killed and over 100 others wounded, including women and children, in a deadly car bombing outside a police station in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for what it said was a “suicide attack”. The bombing occurred at 9 a.m. (local time) when a militant rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the front gate of the police station in Police District 6, Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. Dozens of houses, shops and buildings were destroyed or badly damaged due to the massive explosion, TOLO News reported. The area also houses a military academy.

F

ormer Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter and PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz was detained by Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog on August 8. Maryam Nawaz was arrested while she was on her way back after visiting her father in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. Her cousin Yousaf Abbas was also arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Dawn newspaper reported. In a press release, the NAB stat-

ed that Maryam Nawaz and Abbas were arrested in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability, Shahzad Akbar, on Wednesday said the Sharif family had used Chaudhry Sugar Mills for moneylaundering and illegal transfer of its shares. Akbar said that the mill’s shares were transferred in 2008 to Maryam Nawaz, who later transferred some seven million of them to Abbas in 2010, according to reports. Mujahid claimed the incident in a tweet, saying it was a “suicide attack targeting an enemy recruitment center” near the police station. Mujahid claimed that “tens of police and soldiers were killed”. The incident came after five police officers were killed on Tuesday when an explosive placed on a bicycle was detonated as a vehicle of the Counter Narcotics Department was passing by in northwestern Kabul. These attacks coincided with the eighth round of ongoing peace talks between the US and representatives of the Taliban insurgency in Qatar, where both sides are negotiating an agreement to bring an end to two decades of war. Despite the talks, violence has continued to grip the country with repeated attacks, including in the Afghan capital, resulting in dozens of deaths. into custody after she was shown an arrest warrant issued due to her non-appearance before the bureau. According to the NAB press release, Maryam Nawaz and Abbas will be presented before an accountability court in Lahore for remand on Friday. PML-N leaders and supporters protested the development outside the National Assembly. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari strongly condemned the arrest and slammed the government for its “politics of vengeance”. In a charged address before he walked out of the joint Parliament session, Bilawal criticized the government for “pursuing its agenda of political victimization” and said similar cases were taken up against women during military dictator Zia-ul Haq’s regime.

Hong Kong strike leads to travel chaos HONG KONG: Chaos descended over Hong Kong and emotions ran high on Monday, hours after the launch of a citywide strike that disrupted train services, forced airport authorities to cancel flights, with protesters occupying roads and the police using teargas to disperse stubborn crowds, often to little avail. A total of 82 people were arrested, the police said, hours after the launch of the city’s first general strike in 52 years aimed at pressuring the government to “properly” deal with an escalating political crisis that has rocked Hong Kong since June.

N.Korea fires 2 short range ballistic missiles SEOUL: North Korea fired two projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea on Tuesday, South Korea’s military said, in an apparent show of force against the ongoing joint military exercise between Seoul and Washington that began a day before. The projectiles were fired at 5.24 a.m. and 5.36 a.m. from North Korea’s Kwail county in South Hwanghae province, and both flew around 450 km across the peninsula before splashing into the East Sea, Yonhap News Agency quoted the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying. Their maximum altitude was about 37 km, and the top speed was around Mach 6.9, according to the JCS. “South Korean and US intelligence authorities believe that these short-range missiles bear similar flight features to the ballistic missiles North Korea test-fired on July 25,” the JCS said, adding that analysis was underway to determine their exact type. —IANS

Pentagon chief accuses China of military aggression IANS, TOKYO

U

S Defense Secretary Mark Esper accused China on Wednesday of “pursuing a strategy of military aggression” and “predatory economics” that is destabilizing the Asia-Pacific region. Esper, who is on an official visit to Japan, made these remarks at the start of a meeting in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he discussed the escalation of tensions between Beijing and Washington, the US-Japan bilateral alliance and the latest missile tests by North Korea. “China continues to destabilize the region. sion and calculated strategy of predatory economics violates the international rules-based order

that we are trying to uphold,” Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted Esper as saying.

The Pentagon chief once again lashed out at China after the US decided on Monday to designate the Asian country as a currency manipulator, thereby extending the trade conflict between the world’s top two economies into the realm of currency and making the possibility of an agreement seem more remote than ever. He also expressed concern over the recent missile tests by North Korea and said that Washington remains committed to the “complete, irreversible and verifiable denuclearization of North Korea”, Efe news reported. Esper’s visit to Japan and South Korea, where he will travel on Friday, comes after Pyongyang conducted four missile launches in

two weeks, tests that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un described as a “warning” to the allied countries. He is also scheduled to meet his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya, on Wednesday to discuss bilateral security ties as well as the alliance the two countries have with South Korea at a time when relations between Seoul and Tokyo have fallen to their lowest level in recent decades owing to a historical dispute. The US and Japanese Defense Ministers are also expected to discuss the possibility of Japan joining the US-led initiative to form a naval mission to escort tankers in the Persian Gulf, in the current context of tensions with Iran.

ndia strolled to a seven-wicket over West Indies to complete a series whitewash earlier this week. Captain Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant scored fifties as India chased down a target of 147. Kohli and Pant’s 106-run stand for the third wicket negated any chance of West Indies pulling off an unlikely win. This was Kohli’s 21st T20I fifty, thus helping him draw level with Rohit Sharma for most fifties in T20 internationals. Pant, who got out for a duck and four in the series thus far, scored his second T20 international fifty of his career. Kohli was eventually

GEORGETOWN: India skipper Virat Kohli has insisted that young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant -who is seen as the successor to Rishabh Pant M.S. Pant, who had attracted criticism for his shot selection in the first two T20Is, on Tuesday showed some spark in the final match which India won by seven wickets to clean sweep the three-match series. Earlier, debutant Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini took three and two wickets to restrict the West Indies to 146/6. Kieron Pollard was their highest scorer with 58 off 45 balls. ustralia beat England by 251 runs in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on Monday to take a 1-0 lead in the fiveTest series. This is the first time since 2001 that Australia have won a match at Edgbaston in any format of the game. In a match in which the momentum see-sawed both ways on a number of occasions, Australia finally managed to consolidate their position on Day 4 thanks to centuries by Steve Smith and Matthew Wade. England started Day 5 chasing a daunting target of 398 with 10 wickets in hand, but Pat Cummins made the early incision by dismiss-

England top order, picking up the wickets of Jason Roy, captain Joe Root and Joe Denly to reduce the hosts to 85/4 at Lunch.

Australia never took the foot off the peddle, with Cummins dismissing Jos Buttler shortly after the restart. He then dismissed Jonny Bairstow before Lyon accounted for Ben Stokes in the next over. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes

then held on to stitch together a stand of 39 runs with Woakes doing the bulk of the scoring. The partnership was broken when Lyon managed to get an edge off Ali which flew straight into the hands of David Warner at gully. Lyon's sixth wicket came off the very next ball when Stuart Broad edged him to Smith at slip. James Anderson come out to give Woakes company. While the pair held on for some time, the inevitable was completed when Cummins dismissed Woakes to hand Australia a 1-0 lead as they look to defend their Ashes crown. Interestingly, the last time Australia started an Ashes in England with a win at Edgbaston was in 2001. It was the last time they won the Ashes away from home.

P

resident Ram Nath Kovind has declared abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, after Parliament passed a resolution in this regard. "All provisions of Indian Constitution as amended from time to time without any modifications or exceptions, shall apply to the state of Jammu and Kashmir notwithstanding anything contrary contained in Article 152 or Article 308 or any other article of this Constitution or any other provision of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir or any law, document, judgement, ordinance, order, by-law, rule, regulation, notification, custom or usage having the force of law in the territory of India, or any other instrument, treaty or agreement as envisaged under article 363 or otherwise," the notification issued on Tuesday said. Article 370 had given special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Congress split out in the Modi & Shah achieve BJP’s ideological goal open over Article 370 IANS, NEW DELHI

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday was split down the middle over the scrapping of Article 370 as a large number of leaders, mainly the young brigade, supported the government's move while the old guard, backed by Rahul Gandhi, opposed it. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora, Jaiveer Shergill, and Deepender Hooda favoured withdrawal of the special status to Jammu and Kashmir even as the seniors such as Ghulam Nabi Azad, P. Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal were putting up a fight against the government's move. Azad, a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, said that those who did not know about the history of the party and Article 370 should study it.

B

On the other hand, senior leaders like Anil K Shastri, Kuldeep Bishnoi, cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad and Shatrughan Sinha also hailed the government's decision of revoking Article 370. Shastri even urged his party to sense the mood of people on the Modi government's decision to revoke Article 370, recalling the party opposed the Mandal Commission recommendations and lost ground in north India and should not risk now of losing India. —IANS

y scrapping Article 370, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled Bharatiya Jan Sangh (BJS) founder Syama Prasad Mukherjees dream who had fought against special status to Jammu and Kashmir stressing one nation, one symbol and one Prime Minister". It had been a constant struggle since then for the BJS and its reincarnation the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as removal of Article 370 was at its ideological core. Mukherjee was against J&K having its own "sadr-e-riasat” (head of state) and flag. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have achieved what Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first BJP leader to form the government at the Centre, could not.

Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. (Photo: IANS)

The Modi government used the first term to lay the foundation for the move. A strong ground policy was adopted to crush separatist movement in the state. The militancy was dealt with firm hand. All the resistance points were softened through a crackdown by security

forces and intelligence agencies. By carrying out aggressive military operations -- surgical strike by ground troops after the Uri attack, and the air strike at a terrorist camp in Balakot after the Pulwama attack -- helped in sending Pakistan a strong message that it was up against a different regime in New Delhi, which was not afraid to cross the lines of self-restraint. With the situation firmly under control, the Modi government did not waste much time after returning to power. Shah became Home Minister and he had J&K as the item number one on the agenda, right from the word go. A series of meetings were conducted and the Mission Kashmir was launched under utmost secrecy. All the gaps were plugged before the government took the proposals to Parliament for approval.

Qureshi spoke on the developments as the government released a statement following the NSC meeting, declaring that Pakistan will suspend trade with India in a “downgrading of diplomatic ties”, review bilateral arrangements, take the matter to the UN and observe Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14 in solidarity with Kashmiris. NEW DELHI: The UAE said it has taken note of the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and added that it was an internal matter of India aimed at improving efficiency. Ahmad Al Banna, the UAE ambassador to India, said he has taken note of the Indian govt’s “decision of non-operationalisation of some sections of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution related to the state of Jammu and Kashmir”.

Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe backed the creation of a new Union Territory of Ladakh, noting it would be the first Indian state with a Buddhist majority. Wickremesinghe, in a tweet, also said that the creation of Ladakh and the restructuring of Jammu and Kashmir were India’s internal matters. The UAE Ambassador Ahmad Al Banna said his country has taken note of the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and added that it was India’s internal matter aimed at improving efficiency. “We also took note of the intro-

He added that from his understanding “the reorganisation of states is not a unique incident in the history of independent India and that it was mainly aimed at reducing regional disparity and improving efficiency”. He said the latest decision related to the state of Jammu and Kashmir as “an internal matter as stipulated by the Indian Constitution”.

ctor Varun Sharma, who is fondly known from his character Choocha in the Fukrey series of films, says he wants to work in a movie like Jolly LLB”. Ever since his debut in 2013, Varun has only featured in multicast films such as Fukrey, Dolly Ki Doli, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, “Dilwale”, Arjun Patiala and “Khandaani Shafakhana”. “There have been scripts that have offered solo roles but I want to do something that has a quirk about it. Nowadays if you talk of

comedy as a film genre, you cannot create a simple comedy film, because there are so many other platforms where you can watch

comedy free of cost. There is so much competition and content floating around right now, so comedy has to have a lot quirk and heart,” Varun told IANS. “If you are not giving anything different they (the audience) will not spend money (on your film) the next time. I will do a solo (film) only if it is something crazy. I want to do a film like ‘Jolly LLB’ or something in that space,” the 29-year-old actor. However, he does not mind starring in two-actor projects.

‘Khandaani Shafakhana’: Not quite well-executed S ex is not a dirty word. “Khandaani Shafakhana” opens with that intrepid assertion. A little over a couple of hours later, as a largely average script meanders to its closure, the film is still telling you just that, long after you have got the point. You cannot deny this is a wellintentioned effort. In Bollywood, sadly, well-intentioned does not always spell well-executed. “Khandaani Shafakhana” beats around the same bush without much of a story to tell, through a runtime that would seem at least half an hour too long. At a time when various taboo aspects pertaining to sex have already been explored in delightful comic dramas such as “Vicky

Donor”, “Shubh Mangal Saavdhan” and “Badhaai Ho”, you do look forward to any new film that seeks to open up further discussion to dispel taboos pertaining to the topic. “Khandaani Shafakhana” did promise such vibes in the trailers.

You went in expecting an experience that would be funny, at the same time subtle in its comment. The words ‘sex clinic’ added onto the film’s title in posters and promos also gave you a gist of what to expect. Gautam Mehra’s script,

however, remains just a gist, failing to expand its core idea into a winner. The setting imparts a quaint small town impact as Baby Bedi (Sonakshi Sinha) of Hoshiarpur struggles to find her feet as a medical representative. The script cannot quite decide if Baby should share a proper romantic track with her juicewala hero, to justify his existence. From their very first frame together, the equation seems forced, fraught with an absolute lack of chemistry. Credibly, the film avoids resorting

to cheap gimmicks or double entendre as most Bollywood fare habitually does while dealing with the subject of sex even today - especially if the genre is comedy. The trouble with “Khandaani Shafakhana” is, although billed as a comedy, the film is at best a lighthearted drama with stray shots at humour. Most attempts at garnering laughs are weighed down by the film’s overenthusiasm to deliver its message of the need to open avenues of healthy dialogue on sex in society. Humour apart, the film also falls short on dramatic moments that might engage. The storyline essentially revolves around just one idea all through -Baby’s struggles to keep the clinic running against societal pressure. —Vinayak Chakravorty

I need to figure out this new room, and this new club that I’ve entered. Even though I’ve been here for 15-16 years, it’s not my comfort zone, I need to get my head around it. I can’t (afford to) feel like I know exactly what’s going on, and exactly what I need to do next. So, I’m trying to keep it simple, and eventually I’ll go with my instinct and my gut,” he said.

Varun shuts troll over ‘masala movies’

uperstar Aamir Khan has praised the trailer of his Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore. He says he is keen to watch the forthcoming film. Aamir on Sunday shared the link of the film’s trailer on his Twitter handle and wrote: “Nitesh Tiwariji, really liked your trailer which you showed to me. Wishing you all the very best for the film. May it receive all the love of our audience, and may it bring joy to all of us. Very keen to see it myself.” The film stars Shraddha Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and Varun Sharma. Meanwhile, Aamir will be next seen in Laal Singh Chaddha, inspired by the Tom Hanks-starrer “Forrest Gump”. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the US in the 20th century.

S

tudent of the Year” actor Varun Dhawan gave a piece of advice to a troll who criticised him for doing masala movies. It all started with Varun praising Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. “Watched #HobbsAndShaw. It’s great fun in the cinema. @TheRock really brings its... Loved the homage paid to the Samoan culture. The London chase sequence has to be the best,” Varun tweeted. Soon, a Twitter user commented: “Instead of promoting #Hollywood movies and giving Americans money, please raise our movie quality instead of masala movies that you do. Make some content driven films. “Mahalo brother and glad you loved it. You’re the best,” he tweeted.

Shameful to put a price on a girl: Pari

E

ven though dowry is illegal in India since 1961, it is still prevalent, and actress Parineeti Chopra is shocked at how Indian families consider it a “gift”. “Everyone knows that dowry is illegal and immoral but they practice it. What makes me angry is that people have renamed it ‘gift’ so that it sounds good. Dowry simply means that you are putting a price on the girl and buying her. “We call ourselves modern but then what are we doing? To look superior, we are asking the girls’ families for money and luxurious things. It is the unfortunate scenario of our country,” Parineeti told IANS, while promoting her forthcoming film Jabariya Jodi. — All stories from IANS

Sperm production may be possible in transgenders: Study The study found that one transgender woman was able to produce viable sperm IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers have reported two cases in which young transgender women attempted to recover their fertility after stopping genderaffirming medications. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that one transgender woman was able to produce viable sperm after a few months of discontinuing her puberty-halting medication whereas a different patient on hormone therapy could not produce sperm during the time she could psychologically tolerate being off her medication. “We were interested in examining the timeline for getting viable sperm after stopping masculinitysuppressing medication,” said lead author Hanna Valli-Pulaski, Assistant Professor at Magee-Womens Research Institute. “Going on and off genderaffirming medications can cause psychological distress in this popu-

lation and it’s important patients have a discussion with their health care provider before starting or stopping any treatment,” Valli-

Pulaski added. For the study, the research team examined medical records of two transgender women who tried to

preserve their sperm after stopping hormone therapy and compared their semen quality against eight other transgender women who

elected to preserve their sperm before beginning therapy. All of the participants came through the Fertility Preservation Program in Pittsburgh between 2015 and 2018 as young adults. One of the patients who elected to preserve their sperm after beginning therapy had been taking the drug Lupron — a sex hormone blocker that halts puberty when taken in adolescence — for six months. She elected to stop taking Lupron to attempt sperm cryopreservation. Five months later, she was able to produce a sperm sample comparable to those collected from the eight transgender women who saved their sperm prior to undergoing treatment. According to the researchers, for male-to-female transgender individuals, facial hair can start to sprout and the voice begin to deepen after just a few months of stopping medication. It’s possible to reverse these effects, but it would take time.

Quarter of global population AI identifies new breast cancer types at tuberculosis risk: Study IANS, LONDON

LONDON: A quarter of the world’s population is at high risk of developing tuberculosis, reveals a new study. The study, published in European Respiratory Journal, shows that one in four people in the world carries tuberculosis bacterium in the body. Tuberculosis, which is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, affects more than 10

million people every year and kills up to 2 million, making it the most deadly of the infectious diseases. Besides, several people are infected with the tuberculosis bacterium without having active disease called latent tuberculosis. The study emphasizes that it will be extremely difficult to reach the WHO’s goal of eliminating tuberculosis by 2035.

Being socially active linked to lower dementia risk LONDON: Being more socially active in 50s and 60s is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia later on, a new research has found. “People who are socially engaged are exercising cognitive skills such as memory and language, which may help them to develop cognitive reserve - while it may not stop their brains from changing, cognitive

reserve could help people cope better with the effects of age and delay any symptoms of dementia,” said senior author Gill Livingston, Professor at University College London. The research team focused on the relationships between social contact at age 50, 60 and 70, and subsequent incidence of dementia, and whether social contact was linked to cognitive decline, after accounting for other factors such as education, employment and marital status.

U

sing artificial intelligence (AI), researchers have distinguished five types of breast cancer, which were earlier lumped into one. Published in the NPJ Breast Cancer journal, researchers, including one of Indian-origin, applied AI and machine learning (ML) to gene sequences and molecular data from breast tumors, to reveal crucial differences among these cancer types. According to researchers, two of them are more likely to respond to immunotherapy, one was more likely to relapse on tamoxifen. “We are at the cusp of a revolution in healthcare as we get to grips with the possibilities AI and ML can open up,” said study leader author Anguraj Sadanandam from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London. “Our study has shown that AI can recognize patterns in breast cancer that are beyond the limit of the human eye, and to point us to new avenues of treatment among those who have stopped responding to standard hormone therapies,” Sadanandam said. The majority of breast cancers develop in the inner cells that line the mammary ducts and are “fed”

by oestrogen or progesterone. These are classed as ‘luminal A’ tumors and often have the best cure rates. However, patients within the group respond differently to standard treatments, like tamoxifen, or new treatments -- needed if patients relapse — such as immunotherapy. The researchers applied the AItrained computer software to a vast array of data available on the genetics, molecular and cellular make-up of primary ‘luminal A’ breast tumors, along with data on patient survival. Once trained, the AI was able to identify five different types of disease with particular patterns of response to treatment.

Women with a cancer type labelled ‘inflammatory’ had immune cells present in their tumors and high levels of a protein called PD-L1, suggesting they were likely to respond to immunotherapies. Another group of patients had ‘triple negative’ tumors, which don’t respond to standard hormone treatments but various indicators suggest they might also respond to immunotherapy. The markers identified in the study don't challenge the overall classification of the breast cancer, but find additional differences within the current sub-divisions of the disease.

Spicy diet linked with dementia, says study

Chili intake included both fresh and dried chili peppers but not sweet capsicum or black pepper IANS, NEW DELHI

T

hink twice before adding that extra kick of chili sauce or chopped jalapeno to your meal as researchers have found that a spicy diet could be linked to dementia. According to the research involving 4,582 Chinese adults aged over 55, evidence of faster cognitive decline was found in those who consistently ate more than 50 grams of chili per day. Memory decline was even more significant if the chili lovers were slim. The study, published in the journal Nutrients, showed that those who consumed in excess of 50 grams of chili a day had almost double the risk of memory decline and poor cognition. “Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among

older adults,” said the lead author of the study, Zumin Shi from Qatar University. Chili intake included both fresh and dried chili peppers but not sweet capsicum or black pepper. According to the researchers, capsaicin is the active component in

chili which reportedly speeds up metabolism, fat loss and inhibits vascular disorders but this is the first longitudinal study to investigate the association between chili intake and cognitive function. Those who ate a lot of chili had a lower income and body mass index

(BMI) and were more physically active compared to non-consumers. People of normal body weight may be more sensitive to chili intake than overweight people, hence the impact on memory and weight, said the researchers. “Chili consumption has been linked previously to weight and blood pressure control. Capsaicin is the active ingredient which helps in energy expenditure and fat oxidation However, a new Chinese study says long term consumption of Chili more than 50 grams per day may have a significant impact on the memory,” Sahil Kohli, Consultant -Neurology, Narayana Superspecialize Hospital in Gurugram, told IANS. “So if you like chilies keep their quantity less than 50 grams per day till the time further studies are conducted to validate the new research,” he added.

5 hours daily on phone ups risk of obesity

NEW DELHI: Researchers have found that students who use their smartphones five or more hours a day are prone to higher risk of obesity and likely to have other lifestyle habits that increases the risk of heart disease. According to a study, the researchers analysed 1,060 students with 700 girls and 360 boys of Colombia with an average age of 19 years and 20 years, respectively. “It is important for the general population to know and be aware that, despite being undoubtedly attractive for its multiple purposes, portability, comfort, access to countless services, information and entertainment sources, mobile technology should also be used to improve habits and healthy behaviors,” said study lead Author Mirary Mantilla-Morron from the Simon Bolivar University in Colombia. —IANS

‘An apple carries 100mn bacteria’ Red wine can treat depression, anxiety: Study IANS, LONDON

NEW YORK: In a good news for wine lovers, researchers have found a compound present in red wine which can treat depression and anxiety. The plant compound resveratrol displays anti-stress effects by blocking the expression of an enzyme which controls stress in the brain. “Resveratrol may be an effective alternative to drugs for treating patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders,” said Ying Xu, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo in the US. The findings, published in the journal Neuropharmacolog, shed light onto how neurological processes are

impacted by resveratrol — a compound having numerous health benefits and found in the skin and seeds of grapes and berries. While research has identified resveratrol to have antidepressant effects, the compound’s relationship to phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme influenced by the stress hormone corticosterone, was unknown. Corticosterone regulates the body’s response to stress. Too much stress, however, can lead to excessive amounts of the hormone circulating in the brain and, ultimately, to depression or other mental disorders. N

ext time when you eat an apple for extra fibre, flavonoids and flavor, remember that you are also gulping down about 100 million bacteria, and whether these are good or bad microbes may depend on how the apples were grown. Most microbes are inside the apple but the strains depend on which bits you eat, and whether you go organic, say researchers, adding that organically-grown apples harbour more diverse and balanced bacteria which make them healthier and tastier than conventional apples. “The bacteria, fungi and viruses in our food transiently colonize our gut. Cooking kills most of these, so raw fruit and vegetable are particularly important sources of gut microbes,” said Professor Gabriele Berg from Graz University of Technology in Austria. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, compared the bacteria in conventional store-bought apples with those in visually-matched fresh organic ones. Stem, peel, flesh, seeds and calyx — the straggly bit at the bottom where the flower used to be — were analyzed separately. Overall,

The majority of the bacteria are in the seeds, with the flesh accounting for most of the remainder. (Photo: IANS)

the organic and conventional apples were occupied by similar numbers of bacteria. “Putting together the average for each apple component, we estimate a typical 240-gram apple contains roughly 100 million bacteria,” Berg informed. The majority of the bacteria are in the seeds, with the flesh accounting for most of the remainder. So, if you discard the core, your intake falls to nearer 10 million. The question is: Are these bacteria good for you? “Freshly harvested, organicallymanaged apples harbour a significantly more diverse, more even and distinct bacterial community, compared to conventional ones,”

explained Berg. Specific groups of bacteria known for health-affecting potential also weighed in favor of organic apples. “Escherichia-Shigella — a group of bacteria that includes known pathogens — was found in most of the conventional apple samples, but none from organic apples. For beneficial Lactobacilli — of probiotic fame — the reverse was true,” said the researchers. Methylobacterium, known to enhance the biosynthesis of strawberry flavour compounds, was significantly more abundant in organic apples, “especially on peel and flesh samples, which in general had a more diverse microbiota than seeds, stem or calyx”, said the researchers.

ullying bosses are not just bad for the morale and well-being of employees —they can also be bad for workplace safety, reveals a study. According to the study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, the researchers surveyed 589 airline pilots and 468 manufacturing technicians and found that employees’ safety behaviour can get worse when they are treated in ways that detract from their bonds to a work group. “Bosses’ behavior can strengthen or weaken employees’ sense of belonging to the work group by supporting or undermining their status within the group. Poor treat-

Yang, Associate Professor at Portland State University. This makes them more self-cen-

tered, leading them to occasionally forget to comply with safety rules or overlook opportunities to promote a safer work environment. According to the researchers, this was especially true among employees who were more uncertain about their social standing within the group. “When people are less sure about their strengths, weaknesses and their status within the group, they become more sensitive. They are more likely to respond negatively to their boss’ bullying behaviors,” she said. Workplace safety is a critical issue — and more so in an environment where one employee’s failure to behave safely can create circumstances where other people

are likely to be injured, said the researchers. The study recommends implementing training programmes that can improve leadership skills while interacting with their employees so as to provide feedback in a way that are neither offensive nor threatening. The study also suggested promoting a more civil and engaged work environment that strengthens social bonds between employees and creates a buffer against the negative consequences of their boss’ bad behaviors. According to researchers, implementing transparent performance evaluation processes are required so that employees have less uncertainty about their social status in the workplace.

Hotter weather linked to higher suicide IANS, NEW YORK

otter weather increases both suicide rates and the use of depressive language on social media, says a new study that analysed half a billion tweets. The research published in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests that the effects of climate change could be as devastating as the influence of economic recessions when it comes to increasing suicide rates. Projected temperature rise through 2050 could lead to an additional 21,000 suicides in the US and Mexico, the findings showed. “Surprisingly, these effects differ very little based on how rich populations are or if they are used to warm weather,” said lead researcher

Temperature rise by 2050 could increase suicide rates. (Photo: Pexels/IANS)

Marshall Burke, Assistant Professor at Stanford University. Researchers have recognized for centuries that suicides tend to peak during warmer months. But, many

factors beyond temperature also vary seasonally —such as unemployment rates or the amount of daylight — and up to this point it has been difficult to disentangle

the role of temperature from other risk factors. To tease out the role of temperature from other factors, the researchers compared historical temperature and suicide data across thousands of US counties and Mexican municipalities over several decades. The team also analysed the language in over half a billion Twitter updates or tweets to further determine whether hotter temperatures affect mental well-being. They analyzed, for example, whether tweets contain language such as “lonely”, “trapped” or “suicidal” more often during hot spells. The researchers found strong evidence linking warmer temperature with higher suicide rates. Temperature rise by 2050 could increase suicide rates by 1.4 per cent in the US.

New technology to improve restaurant services IANS, NEW YORK

W

e’ve all been there...you’re out to eat and in need of a refill or the check and the wait staff is nowhere to be found. Now, a recent study shows that adding a tabletop device can improve restaurant services and increase revenues. Published in the journal Management Science, the findings reveal that restaurants should introduce tabletop technology in a demonstrated way to improve service and satisfaction. Tabletop technology allows cus-

tomers to view menu items, reorder beverages, pay for the meal, play games and browse news content. The technology is meant to assist waiters, not replace them. “We estimate one per cent sales lift per check which translates into $2 million extra sales or $1 million profit per month in the shortrun, and that’s a conservative estimate,” said Tom Fangyun Tan, Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University in the US. The research reveals tabletop technology is likely to improve sales by 1 per cent per check and reduce meal duration by 10 per cent. The combination of these two effects

increase the sales per minute or sales productivity by 11 per cent. The data was collected from a restaurant chain here in the US that owns 66 establishments. It looked at transaction data from 2012 to 2014 or 2.6 million transactions. “A good, attentive waiter already does what the tabletop device does...a less attentive or forgetful waiter does not, but relies more on the device, which makes up for the lacking ability resulting in faster service,” Tan said. The data suggest that restaurants re-evaluate their operations to fully reap the benefits of tabletop technology.

Tanmaya (Tan) Kabra

U.S.DEPT.OF JUSTICE NEWS RELEASE BOSTON, TX – The owner of several Boston-based investment companies was arrested yesterday at Logan Airport on charges of operating a Ponzi-like fraud scheme. Tanmaya Kabra, 25, who resided most recently in Weehawken, N.J., was charged in a criminal complaint unsealed today with wire fraud and bank fraud. According to the criminal complaint, Kabra conducted business through a company called LaunchByte.IO LLC and several affiliated companies. He held himself out to investors as a successful serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and angel investor in start-up companies. Offering lucrative and low or no-risk returns on investments, Kabra allegedly lured investors with representations that their funds would be used to foster the growth and development of start-up companies, to prepare those companies for sale, or for other legitimate business opportunities. In reality, Kabra used the money that he received from investors to pay off existing debts to prior investors in his scheme and to fund his lavish personal expenses. The charge of wire fraud provides for a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. The Securities & Exchange Commission provided valuable assistance in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney of Lelling’s Criminal Division Chris Looney is prosecuting the case. S.C.A.R.F Hosted Rhythm Chicago Community Meeting of Life 2nd Annual Gala for Welcoming “Howdy Modi “ BY A STAFF WRITER SCHAUMBURG, IL: More than 530 guests attended the 2nd Rhythm of Life Gala hosted by The Sudden Cardiac-death Awareness Research Foundation (S.C.A.R.F.), an annual fundraising event which aims to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest on July 27 at the Chicago Marriott in Schaumburg Illinois. “While S.C.A.R.F. has accomplished so much over the years, we still have a long way to go. Sudden cardiac arrest remains the number one cause of death in the United States and is responsible for more than 550,000 lives lost each year. Awareness surrounding the issue is vital because this number continues to rise,” said Rubina Nguyen, co-founder of S.C.A.R.F. “We have nearly doubled in size in the past year and are grateful for the tremendous support we received from individuals, community groups, local and national organizations,” Nguyen added. The event highlights the achievements of S.C.A.R.F.’s automated external defibrillators (AEDs) donation program which provides free AEDs for nonprofit organizations, including schools, park districts, places of worship, and charitable organizations. Through its AED donation program, S.C.A.R.F has approved 16 Chicago area facilities to receive an AED free of cost, thus far this year. “AEDs, when applied before the arrival of emergency medical services, can nearly triple a person’s chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. By increasing the number of AEDs in the community and increasing the number of citizens trained in their use, we can significantly impact cardiac arrest survival rates,” said Dr. Sarah Alfano Director of Clinical Information

Dr. Paul Nguyen, founder of S.C.A.R.F.

at S.C.A.R.F. The evening represented the culmination of the 2019 S.C.A.R.F. Mentorship and Career Guidance Program which hosted 50 high school and college-age interns, their largest mentorship class to date. Each year student ambassadors present their research via poster presentation to a team of judges. This year’s winning project, R.E.S.T. was on the topic of sleep apnea was created by Shalin Kadakia, Shravi Kothari, and Ananya Sehgal. “The most common hours of sudden cardiac arrest are between midnight and 6:00 AM” says Dr. Paul Nguyen, founder of S.C.A.R.F. “This is why having a foundational knowledge of sleep apnea is critical towards our mission.” Co-founders Rubina and Paul Nguyen awarded the Dr. Harvinder Sareen Scholarship to student ambassador Morish Shah for her outstanding achievements and contribution to the mentorship class. Dr. Sowmya Anjur of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy was the recipient of the S.C.A.R.F. educational grant.

Indian Student Shot Dead During Armed Robbery in Alabama

Neil Kumar

BY A STAFF WRITER BRUNDIDGE, AL- After a 30-year-old Indian student was shot to death at point-blank range in Alabama last week, police have now nabbed one suspect. Neil Kumar, who was pursuing his Master’s in Computer Science at the University of Troy in Brundidge, Alabama was shot to death by an unknown assailant in an apparent robbery. The 30-year-old was a student at the Sharjah Indian School and a native of Thrissur in Kerala. Neil was working as a part time cashier at a Gulf Gas station convenience store on the busy Highway 10 when the robbery and shooting took place last Wednesday morning. Senior police personnel of Pike county in Alabama promised to reveal the identity of the suspect in a press conference, according to reports. Three CCTV visuals of the attack were released by the police personnel on Thursday. The visuals, carried by local newspapers, showed the assailant who is dressed in all black with white gloves and was carrying a gun. The time code on the CCTV visuals indicate that the suspect had been lurking around the area of the convenience store prior to

the shooting. This suspicion was even raised by the Sheriff of Pike County who is investigating the homicide. One of the visuals shows the assailant walking into the premises of the general store from behind a wooden fence. The time code in this visual shows 5.55 am, which was 5 minutes before Neil opened the shop at 6 am. At 6.07 am, another visual shows the assailant entering the shop and immediately targeting the cashier’s desk where Neil was standing. The visuals suggest that the suspect was inside the shop for only about a minute. He can be seen leaving the shop at 6.08 am, after shooting Neil and taking the money. According to reports, sources say that the suspect has a criminal background. Born to parents Purushothaman Kumar and Seema, who are based in the UAE, Neil had been studying in the United States for a year after graduating from a Chennai college. His parents and sisters Neema and Natasha flew in to Alabama on hearing the news. Neil’s funeral will be held on Monday afternoon in Alabama, in the presence of friends and family. Apart from computers, Neil also nurtured a passion for photography.

community news Salvation Army Presents Life Time Service Award to Sikh Religious Society 4

FRIDAY,02 AUGUST, 2019

BY A STAFF WRITER PALATINE, IL: Sikh Religious Society, Palatine, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago was honored by Salvation Army with a “Life Time Service Award” on Sunday July 14, 2019. Sarwan Singh Raju was also honored with “Making the Difference Award” by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army International is a major Christian missionary organization serving worldwide for more than 150 years in more than 130 countries, working towards social justice, helping the elderly, homeless young people and more. Sarwan Singh has been mobilizing Sikh community of greater Chicago area for over two decades to participate in the events organized by Salvation Army for feeding the poor on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day celebrations. Major Nancy Powers of The Salvation Army, Chicago visited the Sikh Religious Society (SRS) Gurdwara in Palatine, Illinois on July 14, 2019, and presented plaques of honor to SRS and to Sarwan Singh for coordinating the Sikh Community in donating and serving food to the needy families on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day celebration events at Salvation Army in Chicago since 1992. Sarwan Singh and Hardial Singh Deol have spear headed these activities continuing the tradition of “Langar” started by Guru Nanak Dev the founder of Sikh faith. Gurdwara in Palatine is the first ever Sikh Organization at least in the Midwest America to receive a “Lifetime Service Award” from a non-Sikh worldwide organization like Salvation Army. “What could be a better tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji when a highly reputed Christian Missionary organization, Salvation Army,

Major Nancy Power of Salvation Army Chicago presenting Making the Difference Award to Sarwan Singh

appreciates Sikh community for their generosity, in the year of 550thAnniversary,” said Dr. Pardeep Singh Gill the SRS President. SRS President Dr Pardeep Singh Gill and Trustees Prempal Singh, Gurmit Singh Bains, Irwinpreet Singh, Amardev Singh Badesha, Jairam Singh Kahlon, Dr Balwant Singh Hansra and Gurdip Singh Sangha, received the plaque from Major Nancy Powers. of Salvation Army. Chicago This stems from the values Sikhs imbibe from their faith. Helping and serving the needy is one of the core principles of Sikhism. The founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, postulated three cardinal principles for the humanity: 4Japana); There is only one God, Creator of the Universe. Always remember him. All of us are his children. No one is superior than the other. 4Earn your living by honest means and hard work. (Kirt Karani): Sikh believes in dignity of labor, lives as a house holder, engaging in physical and mental activities and accepting the earnings as God’s blessing.

Sahara Homecare Opens New Location in Elgin BY A STAFF WRITER ELGIN, IL---Sahara Homecare is now officially offering services in Elgin with the opening of its ninth location. Sahara Homecare’s Community Care Program (CCP), which receives funding through the Illinois Department on Aging and Department of Human Services, gives extra assistance to the elderly free of cost if they meet certain qualifications. Homecare providers assist clients with everyday tasks that can become difficult due to old age and deteriorating health. Services include laundry, light housekeeping, meal preparation, grocery shopping, as well as help with feeding, grooming, bathing and dressing among others. To qualify, potential clients must: Be 60 years or older. Be a U.S. Citizen or legal alien, Be a resident of Illinois, Have nonexempt asset value of less than $17,500 Have an assessed need for care “We’re hoping we’re going to have great success. There’s a lot of potential in this area,” said President Armaghan Rana in a statement. He also said that the Elgin area has a significant population of seniors from various backgrounds including South Asian and Hispanic that could benefit from CCP Homecare services. “We’re hoping we will have a very good mixture of clientele over here.” The brand-new Elgin office is located

at 1837 Larkin Ave. Besides the main headquarters in Lombard and the newest addition in Elgin, Sahara has several offices throughout the area including Skokie, Melrose Park, Hanover Park, Bolingbrook, Justice and Devon Avenue and Albany Park in Chicago. Sahara is always hiring caregivers in all locations. Starting wage is $12.00/hour and caregivers are eligible to receive health benefits if working at least 20 hours per week.

4 Share your earning with the needy (Vand Chakana): Sikh Gurus ordained that every Sikh should donate one tenth of earnings to charity. Irrespective of the race, religion, gender, color etc. Guru Nanak demonstrated this thru his own life, while he did agricultural farming by his own hands at Kartarpur and said: “Work hard and share your earnings with others; That is the only way to find The Right way leading to God “ (Page 1245 Shri Guru Granth Sahib) Guru Nanak Dev Ji always stood beside the needy and exhorted blessed one’s to share one tenth of their earning for upliftment of underprivileged. “Aap gavaaye sevaa kare taa kichh paaye mann” _ _ _ GGSJ Pg. 474 A person develops sense of humility while doing service. Service is surrendering one’s ego and giving oneself to the Guru. “By doing service one loses his egoistic nature and thereby gets respect from the society.” Giving donations from one’s earnings is another form of Sewa. One must share his earnings with the poor and

the needy (Wand Chhaknaa). This is one of the “Three Golden Rules” of Sikhism. “Nanak agai so milai je khate ghaale deye” . . . . . . . . GGSJ Pg. 472 Guru Nanak says, “You get in future the reward of charity given out of your earnings, earned by honest means and hard labor.” The community members who regularly supported these events included Sarwan Singh, Hardial Singh Deol, Iqbal Singh Chopra and his wife, Thakar Singh Basati, Jasbir Singh Bhalla, Shiva Singh Khalsa and his wife Shabad Kaur, Dr Jasvir Kaur, Amardev Singh Badesha, Kuldeep Singh Makker, Kamaljit Singh Virdi, Khushpal Singh Sodhi, Kuldip Singh Sibbal), Laddi K. Singh, Sukhmel Singh Atwal, Gur Singh, Surinderpal Singh Kalra, Jairam Singh Kahlon, Lakhbir Singh, Onkar Singh Lal, Kuldip Singh Sra, Lal Singh, Geeta Singh and many more. Amardeep Singh Chawla and his wife Timki Kaur, and family have been contributing vans full of canned food and distributing food to the visitors at Salvation Army during these events. The right way of paying tributes to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, when we are celebrating his 550thAnniversary, would be to spread his message to masses, to serve the needy in all communities. “To practice the ideals of Guru Nanka, we must carry out some of our service activities out of Gurdwaras, participating in the American mainstream community events like Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and in national parades (like Memorial Day parade), inter-faith activities and get civically engaged,“ said Sarwan Singh, “such events could serve as an example and inspiration for other Gurdwaras in US to follow suit. It will greatly help in creating awareness in American public and dispel the misconceptions about the Sikhs,” he added

Shri Jagannatha Rath Yatra Celebrated in Aurora BY A STAFF WRITER AURORA, IL- Shri Jagannath Temple of Greater Chicago in Aurora, IL, celebrated Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath of Shrikhetra, Puri, one of the four most holiest places in India (Chaturdham), on July 6th, Saturday. Hundreds of Jagannath devotees from various communities attended the annual event with great enthusiasm and excitement. Local Alderman Mr. Emmanuel Llamas joined the event. He was welcomed by the board members Mr. Pradip Nayak and Neel Nanda, who explained the culture and process to him. In the morning traditional rituals of Surya Pooja, Dwarapal Pooja, Lord Jagannath Pooja, Naibedya, Arati and Chariot Pooja were performed by the temple priest. All the deities were taken to the Chariot in a row with Chakraraj Sudarshan leading followed by elder brother Lord Balabhadra, Sister Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath at the end. This process is called as “Dhadi Pahandi”, it has a significant cultural importance symbolizing respect to elders, and protecting the youngest or woman in the family during public journey. The four deities were placed on the beautifully decorated chariot. Mr.Akhil Mohapatra did the “Chera Panhara”, the sweeping / cleaning around the chariot and the road. This work is done by the Gajapati Maharaj (King) in Puri symbolizing that the king is the first servitor of Lord, there is no difference between ruler and ruled in front of Lord Jagannath. After all rituals completed, the ecstatic devotees pulled the chariot with great joy, playing various traditional instruments such as Counch, brass Ghanta, Gini, and Mrudang (Drum). The chariot was pulled for a mile, Lord were offered

various cakes and sweet mango water on the way. The chariot was puled back to the Temple, Maha Arati was offered before all deities were carried over to Gundicha temple for a sojourn at his Aunt’s house. After a week on July 14th, Lord Jagannath returned to the main temple on a return journey known as “Bahuda Yatra”. There was a brief squabble between MahaLakshmi and Lord Jagannath as he went with his brother and sister leaving his consort Maa Lakshmi in the temple. MahaLakhmi did not open the door of main temple for Lord Jagannath. After argument and requests, Mahalakhmi agreed and welcomed Lord Jagannath to the temple, Lord had presented “Rasagola” the famous sweet to MahaLakshmi to please her. It is an old tradition showing the usual relationship between husband and wife in a family. All the deities were decorated with a Gold like costume known as “Suna Besha”. It was a magnificent view of the deities in that costume. Many devotees came to see the deities in golden costume.
